MONTHLY VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:

GUY BOWDEN

Howdy!

I’m Guy Bowden, a volunteer woodcarving instructor at the South Jordan Senior Center for the past 9 months I’ve been woodcarving here for many years I grew up in Magna, Utah, the oldest of 5 children. We lived on 5 acres next to my grandparents. Playing in the orchard, riding horses, and sleeping under the stars were some highlights of my childhood In the town I grew up in, I was related to someone on every street, and there were 40 streets! I built our house and we raised our children here for 27 years.

After graduating from Cyprus High, I went to the University of Utah and then served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints to Los Angeles, California. It was known as a 4-year mission. Two years to the mission and two years to the smog. I worked in construction for 50 years, starting when I was 8 years old with my dad I cut my finger off in the cement mixer watching him on the jobsite I had reached for the belt and it sucked my finger in and cut the tip off. When I was 3, my dad took me fishing and I’ve fished ever since During summer, Friday is the day I take my kayak and go fishing at Jordanelle or Strawberry Reservoir with a good success rate We enjoy fresh caught fish for dinner.

I received a bow at the age of 4. Many years of practice and shooting in competitions ttend the Olympic Trials I placed 23 out of 180 competitors I enjoy bowhunting as well as competition target shooting. I have shot in Senior Games in St. George and placed in the top three several times.

I met my sweetheart, Karen, almost 50 years ago. Our first date lasted for one year from 1975-1976 (at New Year’s Eve dance) We have been blessed with 4 children, 17 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren Our children and their families now live from coast to coast in 3 different time zones. We have lived in Riverton for twenty plus years. When my wife retired, she started a flower business called Blackberry Gardens and I am her partner in crime with matching green thumbs I help create and build whatever we need including flower boxes, irrigation systems, an arbor, and more, When she asked if we could have a flower garden, I told her, “if I build you a garden, I will always have a bouquet for you.”

Woodcarving has been a lifetime hobby It started when I carved my first Pinewood Derby car with a pocket knife All the cowboys I knew had a pocket knife on their belt I wanted to be just like them and have one too After a while, I found that always having a knife proved to be a necessity.

My life changed in 2006, when colitis took control I had 22 surgical procedures I couldn’t work and my activities were limited Woodcarving was an outlet that I needed and the motivation to get me up and out of the house. I had always wanted to learn how to carve figures, but never had the time.

An article in the South Jordan Valley Journal about Salt Lake Valley Carving Club caught my eye. From there, I have become an active member in Senior Centers around the valley, teaching at 3 of them. My carvings have received many awards with the most recent taking first place in the Mayor’s division at the South Jordan Senior Art Show.

I’ve made many friends at the centers I attend I would encourage anyone seeking to learn wood carving to come and check it out

We furnish the supplies and Band-Aids.
