We recently held our first annual State of the City event to reflect on South Jordan’s remarkable progress over the past year. Strong relationships are critical to ensuring our continued success. One of our most important relationships is with our education partners. We appreciate Superintendent Dr. Anthony Godfrey for joining us as we highlighted our valued partnership with Jordan School District. In addition to the strength of our existing schools, Dr. Godfrey

presented information about the construction of a new elementary school set to begin this year. We are grateful for our shared commitment to education and our children’s future.

Economic development is another key priority our City Council and staff are working hard on, as evidenced by our collaboration with the Larry H. Miller Company. Steve Starks, CEO of LHM, gave an update on the construction of the new baseball stadium and the surrounding amenities. This urban center project, known as Downtown Daybreak in South Jordan, is a key element of our dynamic growth and is slated to include a family entertainment center, dining, shopping, employment centers, access to transit, and housing. We are working to finalize plans for a third TRAX stop, additional entrance and exit points for Mountain View Corridor, and an incredible new performing arts center. The first phase of this project symbolizes our community’s passion for family entertainment, cultural arts, sports and recreation,

and the City Council’s commitment to bringing additional amenities, high-paying jobs, shopping and dining, closer to home. We are committed to enhancing quality of life for generations to come, and this project promises to provide exciting opportunities for all of our residents.

Developing strong partnerships with many stakeholders and bringing our city together through service is another critical element of South Jordan’s strength. Because of our deliberate efforts in this area, we are proud to receive the first-ever JustServe Global Cities Award, recognizing our dedication to community partnerships and volunteerism, and our efforts to make South Jordan a city that prospers and gives back. Heath Bradley, Global Director of JustServe, came to highlight the award and thank South Jordan for leading out by helping to establish this program in cities across America. The award was originally presented in November by Mr. Bradley and Mayor Victoria Woodards of Tacoma, WA, President

of the National League of Cities, at their annual conference. It was an honor to accept the award and speak at the event. Other recipients of this inaugural award include Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, California; Chandler, Arizona; Franklin, Tennessee; and Louisville, Kentucky.

The final priority to receive a spotlight was infrastructure. We are working very hard to plan for and design infrastructure that will accommodate our city’s growth and secure funding to ensure it becomes a reality. Congressman Burgess Owens joined us to discuss the work we are doing together as we strive to make South Jordan’s needs a top priority at every level. A few of the infrastructure projects currently underway in our city include new water lines along 1300 West, the 9800 South interchange on Bangerter Highway, our Pure SoJo project to sustain our water supply far into the future, and the extension of Grandville Avenue, which when completed will connect over to 5600 West, giving us another north/south route from I-80 to South Jordan.

Collaborating with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), we’re designing new access points for Mountain View Corridor which will enhance traffic flow, especially to the new stadium. We also continue planning with Rio Tinto, the Larry H. Miller Company, UDOT, Utah

Transit Authority (UTA), Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, South Valley Sewer, Salt Lake County, and Jordan School District. South Jordan City is committed to enhancing sustainability and strengthening connectivity, while saving millions of gallons of water by removing unnecessary grass turf and replacing it with water-wise landscape at even more city-owned facilities this year. Our partnership with UTA for a third TRAX stop on the Red Line was also recently approved, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to enhancing transit service and providing additional transportation options. These projects and so many others represent our commitment to collaboration, innovation, and

a strong, vibrant community with unparalleled quality of life.

South Jordan is one of the best cities in America, and it is an honor to serve as your mayor. Thank you to everyone who serves their neighbor or volunteers time and talents in any way to make our community the wonderful place it is. Thank you to our City Council and staff for your continued commitment to excellence. Let’s all keep working to preserve and enhance what we have here. The State of the City is outstanding. It is strong, fiscally sound, safe, and well maintained. I am proud to report that the future continues to be bright for South Jordan.

GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK AND BRAKE AT STOP SIGNS

If you run a stop sign, you are risking one of the most dangerous types of accidents: a T-bone crash. T-bone accidents rank among the most deadly types of accidents and can be avoided by coming to a complete stop at stop signs and looking both ways before proceeding.

If you have ever attended South Jordan City-sponsored events like SoJo Summerfest, Light the Night, Pumpkin Promenade, or Spring Spectacular (be sure to attend on March 30!), then you have witnessed the work of the City’s Special Events Coordinator, Natalie Domino. Natalie is responsible for planning, organizing, and executing a variety of events throughout the year that are designed to engage the community and enhance quality of life. Learn more about how she makes events unique and fun for residents in this quick Q&A.

What does it take to put on something as large as a City-wide event? It depends on the size of the event and how long it lasts. The biggest events take many staff members to prep and run the event, a lot of permits, Diet Dr. Pepper, and even more glitter.

How do you come up with new event ideas? I’m inspired by life and random thoughts. I wish there

was a better way to explain it, but inspiration hits me all the time and I’m lucky enough to have people who are willing to go with my ideas.

How much do you do yourself and how much do other City staff members do? I usually plan the event and the event layout. I work with all the performers and hired companies including bands, petting zoos, portable toilets, signage, staging, and lighting etc. My staff members help with permits and prepping items for crafts, getting signs ready, prepping items to be sent out at the event, setting up and taking down events, and whatever else needs to be done. Staff members from other departments help with set up and execution of the events, and for larger events they help with planning logistics as well. I work with our Communications Division on communications and marketing for the events. SoJo Summerfest takes almost every department in the city to make the event successful. This includes departments like Fire, Police, Parks, Recreation, Public Works, Facilities, and Communications. We have an amazing staff at the City of South Jordan and without them the events could not happen.

How do you make each event special every time? I work to pay attention to the event attendees for each type of event and note their needs and wants. I make sure to find a way to make it special for them. I also like to add extra details, almost like little Easter Eggs that people can find, and it gives the event a little something extra for people to enjoy. Nothing makes me happier than when someone comes up to me at an event and says something like “it’s so cool that you guys did…”

How many pounds of glitter do you use in a year? It isn’t as much the amount of glitter that I use, but the number of different kinds of glitter. I use a lot of sequin fabric, sheets of adhesive rhinestones, and heat press glitter vinyl. I can always find new things to glitter, and my goal is to make the whole place shimmer.
