FIRE SAFETY SEASON

Summer is a time for outdoor activities and enjoying the warm weather, but it’s also when we must be extra cautious about fire safety. Your South Jordan City Fire Department wants to ensure you and your loved ones stay safe while having fun this summer.

It is important to remember that fireworks are restricted in many high-fire-risk areas in South Jordan and can be incredibly dangerous if not handled properly. If you choose to use fireworks, make sure they are purchased locally and are legal to discharge in your area. Be sure to keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby, never light them near dry grass, trees, bushes, or other flammable materials, and ensure aerial fireworks are secure from tipping over by using heavy objects like cinderblocks placed on each side of the aerial cake. Children under the age of 16 may not handle or operate aerial fireworks. Remember all children should be closely supervised when in an area where fireworks are being used, as even sparklers operate at more than

1000 degrees, which can cause serious burn injuries or light clothes on fire.

Another potential fire hazard during the summer months is smoking outdoors. Cigarettes should always be disposed of properly in an ashtray or other fire-safe container. Never toss a cigarette butt on the ground, around decks, close to your home, or out your car’s window where it can ignite dry grass or leaves. Improperly disposed of smoking materials result in significant property losses, injuries, and deaths from fires every year.

If you’re planning on spending time camping or hiking this summer, it’s important to remember that campfires can quickly get out of control if not managed carefully. Make sure campfires are allowed in your area before starting one, keep them small, and never leave them unattended. When you finish your campfire, extinguish it completely by pouring water over the embers until they are cool to the touch. Be sure to use plenty of water

and stir up the ash and embers to ensure the fire is fully out. Even a modest breeze can reignite hot embers and carry them away from a fire pit.

Finally, having a plan in an emergency is always a good idea. Make sure everyone knows what to do if there is a fire, and practice your escape plan regularly. Remember to call 911 immediately if you see smoke or flames, and remember to test and replace batteries in your smoke

detectors each year. Also keep an operating carbon monoxide (CO) detector on every floor of your home. Both smoke detectors and CO detectors should be replaced every ten years.

By following these simple tips and being mindful of fire safety during the summer months, you can help ensure that everyone has a safe and happy summer season!

Sustainable Energy Usage in South Jordan

It’s no secret that South Jordan is growing, but did you know that businesses and residents in our community actually used less electricity per account in 2022? Sustainable growth is a key priority for the City. That’s why the City partnered with Rocky Mountain Power to implement a Wattsmart Energy Plan. Our vision is to promote clean and efficient energy use to help build a healthy and sustainable community. The City is committed to keeping utility costs affordable, improving air quality, and supporting sustainable economic development.

Here’s how South Jordan is doing with electricity conservation so far. Since 2018, residents and businesses have completed 9,087 Wattsmart projects and saved over $3 million dollars. In 2022, members of our community saved a collective $660,000 on energy costs, far surpassing the Wattsmart Energy Plan goal of $193,000. Electricity usage per account was less in 2022 than in 2021 and 2020, indicating a return to prepandemic levels of energy use.

Businesses (both large and small) and residents can see these same savings by signing up for a Wattsmart project. Wattsmart projects include rebates on appliances, heating and cooling units, smart thermostats, lighting, and weatherization. The Wattsmart New Homes program helps builders raise the efficiency of South Jordan homes from the ground up. Cash rebates are available for multifamily properties as well. Check out sjc.utah.gov/wattsmart to see all the available options and get started saving today.

In order to keep electricity usage sustainable, Rocky Mountain Power offers customers easy, low-cost ways to access renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar. Residents and businesses can purchase renewable energy credits for as low as $1.95 a month; those extra funds go into local projects that reduce emissions and diversify the community’s energy portfolio. In 2022, 4% of the energy used citywide came from renewable sources. To find out more about these programs, search for Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky Program.

MAYOR'S CORNER

Itis with great excitement that the city council and I invite you to join us on June 22nd for the grand opening of Bingham Creek Regional Park! Phase one is nearly complete, and once all three phases are finished this new park is set to be the largest park in Salt Lake County, serving as a hub for recreation and leisure in our community.

We have worked tirelessly in partnership with Salt Lake County to ensure that this park is one of the most spectacular outdoor spaces in the region. It boasts amenities such as a rentable pavilion, restrooms, a bike course, a playground, and space for future sports programming. Future phases are also expected to include a destination splash pad, tennis courts, pickleball courts, additional multi-purpose sport fields (including a championship field), a bike skills course, volleyball courts, basketball courts, open lawn space, a disc golf course, and additional trails. The possibilities for outdoor activities are endless!

As we continue to develop Bingham Creek Regional

Park, I am confident that it will become a unique generational gathering place and recreational center for our community. I cannot wait to see this area transform into a beautiful park where families and friends can come together to create new memories.

I am also thrilled to announce the opening of our new splash pad at Heritage Park this summer. With 17 different water spray features, including a large oldfashioned water tower and a lazy creek, this splash pad is guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment for the whole family. Plus, with several pavilions, picnic tables, and other shaded structures, you can take a break and relax under or out of the sun. This new splash pad also incorporates water conservation efforts by recirculating and treating the water (like a swimming pool), thus requiring less water overall during the summer season.

I encourage all of our residents to take advantage of the many outdoor amenities South Jordan has to offer. Whether you’re taking a leisurely walk on one of our scenic trails, having a picnic at one of our parks, or enjoying a game of basketball with friends, there’s no better way to spend a beautiful day in our community.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for June 22nd and join us for the grand opening of Bingham Creek Regional Park. It’s an event you won’t want to miss! Let’s come together and celebrate this incredible addition to our community.

WHO YIELDS AT ROUNDABOUTS?

Remember that drivers that are entering a roundabout must yield to the vehicles that are already in the roundabout. When approaching a roundabout be sure and look to the left and yield to the vehicles coming around the roundabout.
