South Jordan’s Commitment to Water Conservation

South Jordan has long prioritized water conservation, implementing measures to ensure sustainable water use as the City grows. One of the earliest steps in this direction was the appointment of a dedicated water conservation coordinator, a move that positioned South Jordan as a leader in water conservation. This dedication was recognized when the city received the State of Utah’s Water Efficiency Award.

2023 Achievements

In 2023, South Jordan residents took advantage of the following City programs:

• Parkstrip Conversions: The City has facilitated the conversion of 161 parkstrips to more water-efficient landscaping.

• Rebates and Incentives: Residents have benefited from 294 rebates, supporting the removal of over 205,000 square feet of grass.

• Leak Checks and Water Audits: The city conducted 360 leak checks with residents and businesses, which, together with grass removal efforts, are expected to save an estimated 202,168,203 gallons of water annually.

• HOA Grass Removal Assistance: A new section in the Conservation Plan assists a certain number of Homeowners Associations (HOAs)

each year with grass removal projects.

So far in 2024, even more residents are taking advantage of the program. More than double (171) residents have utilized leak checks compared to this point in 2023 (78).

Reducing Water Use Amidst Growth

Even as the City grows, South Jordan has successfully reduced its Gallons Per Capita per Day (GPCD) water use by an average of 4% annually over the past three years. This reduction underscores the effectiveness of the City’s conservation efforts and the community’s commitment to sustainable water use.

Citywide Conservation Measures

South Jordan is also focusing on reducing water use within the City’s own operations. This includes converting landscaping at public locations such as the Public Works/City Hall areas and parkstrips along major roads, guided by a Parkstrip Master Plan aimed at converting grass along key roads in the near future.

Water Efficiency Standards

In 2021, South Jordan passed comprehensive Water Efficiency

Standards (WES) ordinances for new construction, which include:

• Prohibiting grass in parkstrips or areas less than 8 feet wide.

• Prohibiting grass on slopes greater than 25%.

• Requiring “WaterSense” smart irrigation controllers for all landscaped areas.

• Limiting lawn area in commercial, industrial, institutional, and multifamily developments to no more than 20% of the total landscaped area

Resources and Tools for Residents

South Jordan provides several resources to help residents conserve water:

• Grass-Removal Rebates: These rebates are available for any area of the yard with living and watered turf grass, supporting entire-yard conversions.

• Toilet and Fixture Rebates: These rebates help homeowners replace high-flow toilets and fixtures with low-flow alternatives.

• Free Leak Checks and Water Audits: These services help ensure no water is wasted in homes and businesses.

• Customer Portal: This tool allows residents to monitor their water use, detect leaks early, and receive notifications about their watering habits.

South Jordan takes water conservation seriously and continues to implement effective measures to promote sustainable water use. Through comprehensive programs and community involvement, the City is committed to ensuring a sustainable future for all residents. South Jordan encourages residents to utilize the available resources and contribute to the City’s ongoing water conservation efforts.

SUPPORTING PUBLIC ART IN SOUTH JORDAN

The City of South Jordan is proud to offer the “Round it Up for the Arts” program, a simple yet impactful way for residents to support local arts initiatives. Launched in 2016, this program allows utility customers to round up their bills to the nearest dollar, with the extra cents donated to fund various public art projects throughout the city.

What Your Donations Support

Funds raised through the “Round it Up for the Arts” program go directly to the South Jordan Arts Council, a dedicated group of residents appointed by the City Council. This council is responsible for deciding how the funds are used to enrich our community through art. The donations help finance several key projects, including:

SUMMERTIME AMENITIES

Happy Independence Day! Thank you to everyone who came to our SoJo Summerfest, our South Jordan Puzzle Unveiling, and our production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. June was an incredible month filled with amazing art, great entertainment, family fun for all ages, and our awesome parade. It is my honor to be part of these spectacular events as your Mayor, and I appreciate all of the staff and volunteers who help make them happen. South Jordan is truly the BEST place to kick-off summer! And now that it’s July, the fun doesn’t stop. Our City has much more to offer, and I want to encourage you to take advantage of it.

We were thrilled to open a new splash pad last summer, giving us two in the City—the Oquirrh Shadows Park Splash Pad at 10400 South and 4000 West and the Heritage Park Splash Pad at 10800 South Redwood Road. Each has multiple water features, shade structures, and warm-weather fun to help your family beat the summer heat.

If you are trying to stay out of the sun but still want to get out, I highly recommend our Movies in the Moonlight series, every Friday night at dusk between June 21 and August 9. Our fabulous events team brings in food trucks and has fun activities that are on theme with the shows. Movies in the Moonlight is a popular summer favorite!

Beginning in August, our South Jordan

Farmer’s Market, hosted in collaboration with the Utah Farm Bureau, is a great way to buy fresh fruits and vegetables for your whole family and to support our local farmers!

Finally, don’t forget to check out our beautiful parks. Have you had a chance to visit our All-Abilities Park, the new playground at Jordan Ridge Park, or the new Bingham Creek Regional Park yet? Phase one of that generational regional park opened last summer and is quickly becoming a community favorite. It has a large playground, beautiful pavilion, a disk golf course, a bike course, and wide open spaces to play in.

Take the Jordan River Parkway Trail, golf at Mulligans, pack a picnic and head to your favorite park- South Jordan offers something for everyone. We live in a beautiful community with exceptional amenities and I encourage you to enjoy them all this summer!
