Eagles and their feathers are highly revered and considered sacred in Native American traditions. They represent honesty, truth, majesty, strength, courage, wisdom, power, and freedom.
(American Eagle Foundation)
Don Worthington is originally from Nephi Utah. He attended Juab High School, graduating in 1957 and has always been a fan of the Statler Brothers and their song “The Class of 57”. He next attended Utah State University, graduating with both bachelor’s degrees in Elementary Education, and Biological Science in secondary Education and master’s degrees in Speech Pathology and Audiology. At graduation he was commissioned an officer in the United States Army. The Army then granted him a fellowship to pursue his doctoral degree in Audiology from Northwestern University. Upon completing his doctoral degree, he entered the Army on active duty, going first to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio Texas, and then to Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington DC. When the commanding officer learned that he had a doctoral degree in Audiology, he was assigned to the position of Director of the Army Audiology and Speech Center. Later, his expertise was recognized, and he was appointed as Consultant to the Army Surgeon General. After 8 years in the Army, he accepted a position as Director of Clinical Services at Boys Town National Research Hospital for children with communication disorders, in Omaha, Nebraska. He worked there for 22 years. He then in 1993 accepted a position as Director of the Hearing and Balance Center at Intermountain Health Center. Upon retirement, he and his wife served a mission for the Church in Connecticut and Rhode Island. When they returned in 2010, Mary Lou had a desire to once again work in ceramics, something she had done for about 10 years while in Omaha. She looked around and found that they had a ceramics class at the South Jordan Senior Center. Don would take her to the center and get her set up and then go out in the hall to read his book. She would come out and ask him to come in and help her pick out colors. After a while he decided to pick a chair next to her and read the book there. That only lasted two classes, and he decided to try to pick out a project for himself. He became hooked and has participated ever since. After just completing his own projects, he was asked to become a volunteer to help out where needed. Unfortunately, two days before Christmas last year, Mary Lou fell and struck her head, causing severe internal bleeding. She died just 6 hours later. After 60+ years of marriage, Don debated whether to quit coming to ceramics, but decided that’s where some of his best friends are! Don and Mary Lou love their family, consisting of seven children (plus spouses), thirty three grandkids and 10 great grandkids.
