This year SheepMaster Stud has not tailed any lambs. Our Elders National Invitational Ram Sale in 2022 will have rams with tails on and they are looking great. We have seen a big improvement in weaning weight, vigour and general well being. At Sheepmaster Stud we are extremely happy with this important step forward in animal welfare policy. It now means the lambs are not handled until weaning, when vaccination, drenching, tagging and ear marking is carried out…huge time saving practice and less pressure on young lambs. Having taken the plunge, we know we could never take the tail off a lamb again.

T

he National Elders Ram Sale on 5th November We would like to thank our bidders and underbidders, Elders and all supporters. We achieved the highest priced ram sold in Western Australia in 30 years and the all time record average for a team of rams for all breeds (Farm Weekly, Thurs 11th Nov) Other shedding sheep breeds have had similar success. This is an enormously exciting time for the shedding sheep industry. Still in the sunrise phase, this year’s sale results re ect the huge potential of the shedding sheep market.

enotyping SheepMaster Stud will this year genotype all breeding ewes and sires and provide Genomic data for all breeding stock within the stud, both for sale and retention. Genotyping is the process of finding differences in the genetic makeup of individual sheep in their DNA sequences. This process will underpin the Garnett Scoring/Classing System (GSCS) which is currently producing such outstanding results, further delivering meaningful, easily understood and commercially focussed information to our clients.

T

he entire SheepMaster breeding ock is to be re-evaluated in the next few weeks, using the GSCS. Our policy of cross-weaning lambs at an average age of 10 weeks is an old tradition which reduces much stress at weaning, allowing the breeding ewes to recover quickly for re-mating. This program achieves 3 drops of lambs every 2 years, with near 200% average lambs weaned every 12 months.

It is our aim to class and select for those commercial and profit-driving attributes that our clients look for in their own sheep. If a ram can’t eat, walk or reproduce, we won’t sell him! Equally, his offspring must exhibit all the required maternal and market focussed characteristics that will put more profit into your business. admin@sheepmaster.com.au
