亲爱的学⽣及家⻓们， 在本期的 Jubli Times, 让我分享本校的愿景 - 透过全⼈教育，影 响并丰富更多⼈的未来。亚⾥⼠多德（古希腊哲学家，科学家和 教育家）说：“仅给头脑注⼊知识却不教育⼈⼼，这并不是教 育。” ⾝为⼀名教育⼯作者，我个⼈对此的理解是，教育不仅 限于传授学术⽅⾯的知识。培养个⼈品格和领导能⼒、情商、社 交技能、社会意识与教育其他⽅⾯的发展同等重要，这才是真正 的全⼈教育。 容许我⽤我本⾝的教育历程来引述教育。我⽣⻓在⼀个⾮常注重 教育的家庭。但是，我不是⼀位成绩优异的学⽣，也并不是在考 试⼀直考不及格的学⽣。我只不过是⼀位成绩中等的学⽣。尽管 如此，我的⽗⺟不停教导并灌输我这重要的价值观 - 全⼒以赴， 除此之外，他们让我在这11年接受教育的过程中有机会探索不同 的活动，当中包括游泳、珠⼼算、⽻⽑球、钢琴、绘画、⼩提 琴、露营、社区服务到担任巡查员、学⽣会副主席等等。有了这 些学习机会和平台，让我在接受教育的过程中受益匪浅。这不单 是为了让我有杰出的简历，更是教导我⼈⽣中重要的课程，亦让 我受⽤⾄今。 我的第⼀堂课是愿意尝试并以追求卓越的态度对待被交咐的事情 上，从⽽去发掘学习的热忱。第⼆，在学习的探索之旅的路上选 择合适的对象和社区来建⽴强和稳健的社交关系和情商。现今的 我想传授这两堂课给我的学⽣们。这也是为什么我们在致理国际 学校倡导透过全⼈教育，影响并丰富更多⼈的未来。让我们携⼿ 前⾏，巩固教育的重要性，以使得我们的学⽣在各⽅⾯全⼒以赴 地发挥他们的潜能。

介绍

Introduction

谭维保硕⼠⽬前为居銮益⼈ 社会服务中⼼之青少年发展 总监，亦为致理国际学校董 事之⼀。⾝为⼀名教育、辅 导及咨询硕⼠，他有着超过 20 年与学校、家⻓和学⽣们 辅导与培训的经验。此外， 他也经常被邀到各地主讲亲 ⼦婚姻及青少年⽣涯规划与 升学讲座。

Besides his more well-known role as the director of Eden Community Services Centre, Mr. Paul Tam is also one of the directors here in Seri Jubli.

He has a Master's degree in Education, Counselling & Guidance and has had many years of experience working with schools, parents and students. He also conducts parenting and marriage seminars regularly.

比IQ 更重要的事 在疫情肆虐、⼈⼈⾃危的氛围中，传来了这时期居銮县有超 过 900 名学⽣辍学的消息，其中⼤部分是中学⽣。辍学学⽣ 占柔佛学⽣总⼈数的 0.16%。 世界卫⽣组织在 9⽉10⽇刚过去的世界预防⾃杀⽇前⼣表 ⽰，⾃杀是年龄介于 15 - 29 岁年轻⼈的第⼆⼤死亡原因。 此外，⼀项研究显⽰，⼤专⽣的⼼理健康问题越发严峻，⼼ 理疾病患病率更是呈现逐年上升的趋势。 我与内⼈投⾝⼉少事⼯近⼆⼗年，不断关注⼉童及⻘少年成 ⻓的状况，近年来的社会现象让我们察觉我们的下⼀代的抗 逆能⼒似乎有下降的现象。亲爱的爸妈，孩⼦的成功真的不 再是 IQ ⾄上啊！ ⾸先，缺乏情绪智能（EQ）能⼒，让孩⼦们在压⼒⼤的学习 环境中，没有健康的⼼理素质来⾯对较⾼期待带来的压⼒； ⼀旦遭受失败和挫折，就⼀蹶不振，此时⾼智商（IQ）反⽽ 成了束缚。 时间不会让孩⼦⾃⼰成熟，因此，⽗⺟要把握⻩⾦教养期成 为孩⼦们的“EQ守⻔⼈”。有⽗⺟扮演情绪教练的孩⼦，挫折 容忍度较⾼、社交能⼒表现较出⾊，也⽐较有能⼒处理⾃⼰ 的情绪。 当然，唯有情绪平稳的⽗⺟，才能带出情绪平稳的⼩孩。注 重教育的⽗⺟都知道，我们要先处理情绪再处理问题。⼼理 学家阿德勒指出，⼀个⼈的⼈格养成多在 5 岁之前，所以， 要培养孩⼦的⾼ EQ，越早越好。

此外，针对先前提到的要提⾼孩⼦的逆境智能或 AQ（Adversity Quotient），就是指孩⼦愿意⾯对问题、解 决问题的忍耐⼒、坚韧⼒、意愿⼒、⺫标达成⼒及⾃信⼒；有 三点： 第⼀，家⻓们要明⽩培养孩⼦的⾃律能⼒及忍耐⼒的过程急不 来。这是因为负责“⾃制忍耐⼒”功能的⼤脑前额叶会到25岁才 发展完全，所以在给予孩童这⽅⾯的锻炼时必须要有耐⼼。 没有订下规矩的爸爸妈妈，会让孩⼦⻓⼤以后，对团体⽣活， 或整体社会的规范与要求难以适从。⽽从来没有匮乏的孩⼦很 难学会知⾜，⼤⼈轻易妥协让步反⽽造成孩⼦习惯被⽴即满 ⾜，导致挫折容忍度低。 第⼆，要培养让孩⼦重新振作、转换⼼情的复原⼒或坚韧 ⼒。很多⽗⺟都为孩⼦们安排好⼀切，结果孩⼦还以为“⾃⼰ 会、⾃⼰⾏！”结果外出遇到失败，就很难振作起来。除了让 孩⼦体验成功的滋味，也让孩⼦知道“失败也没关系”、“答案 不只是⼀个”、“还有很多⽅法可以尝试看看”。 第三，达成⺫标或展现学习意愿时，清楚传达称赞，才能提升 孩⼦⾃信⼼。对孩⼦的称赞要着重过程（“你知道要上课，所 以早早上床，很有节制⼒呢！”“你为了解题，尝试了很久，我 喜欢你这种有耐⼼的努⼒⽅式”）⽽不是结果 （有没有拿 100 分）。 孩⼦年幼时对着世界还是“不明所以”，⽗⺟该抓紧原则和规 范，成为他们的教练（有时兼当玩伴），确实地要求他们做到 所订下的界线。等到孩⼦逐渐⻓⼤，能够了解⼈我界线，⽗⺟ 这才放⼿给予孩⼦尊重与空间，这是培养⽐ IQ 还重要的 EQ 和 AQ 的关键。

SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT THAN IQ The COVID-19 pandemic has caused much fear in the lives of many. Nevertheless, at this time, we hear equally alarming news! More than 900 students in the Kluang district have dropped out of school during this period; most of them being secondary school students. This number accounts for 0.16% of the total number of students in Johor.

On 10 September 2020, on the eve of the World Suicide Prevention Day, the World Health Organisation (WHO) stated that suicide is now the second leading cause of death among young people aged 15-29. In addition, a study showed that mental health problems of tertiary students have become more severe, and the prevalence of mental illnesses has been showing an upward trend year after year.

My wife and I have been involved in children and youth work for nearly two decades, and we have been constantly paying attention to the growth of children and young

people. In recent years, social phenomena have made us aware that the level of resilience among the next generation seems to be declining. Dear parents, do you see now, that the success of your child can no longer be determined solely on their level of IQ? First of all, children who lack emotional intelligence (EQ) do not have the ability to cope with the pressures and expectations when learning in a stressful environment; when faced with failures or setbacks, they crumble under pressure and their IQ now becomes a stumbling block rather than a source of help.

The reality, however, is that time itself will not guarantee a child’s maturity. Therefore, parents need to grasp hold of this crucial period in the upbringing of their child to become their "EQ Gatekeepers". Children with parents as their emotional coaches, have higher tolerance for failure, better social skills, and deal with their emotions better.

Regardless to say, parents themselves will need to have good EQ in order to bring up children with good EQ. Parents should also know that emotions need to be dealt with before dealing with other issues. Psychologist Alfred Adler pointed out that a big part of a person's personality is actually developed before the age of 5. So, the sooner a child's EQ is developed, the better.

In addition, it is necessary to develop Adversity Intelligence or AQ (Adversity Quotient) in a child.

This refers to their willingness to face problems, their e n d u r a n c e , perseverance, ability to achieve goals, and self-confidence. Here are three points: First, parents s h o u l d understand that the process of cultivating a child's self-

discipline and endurance is not something that can be rushed. This is because the prefrontal lobe of our brain, which is responsible for the function of self-control and

endurance, does not fully develop until the age of 25. Thus, it is necessary for parents to be patient in this area.

When parents do not set rules for their children, it makes it difficult for them to fit in to the norms of society as a whole when they grow up. It is also difficult for children to learn contentment if they have never been deprived of anything.

Moreover, parents who easily compromise and give in to their children’s whims and fancies cause them to be accustomed to instant gratification, which results in a lack of tolerance for failure.

Second, we must cultivate resilience and the ability to limit the influence of difficult situations in a child. Many parents plan and arrange everything for their children. As a result, children end up thinking, "I can do this by myself, I can succeed on my own!"

And thus, when they fail, they are unable to accept failure and pick themselves up again. That is why it is important to let children experience, not only success, but also help them see things like "it’s okay to fail”, "there can be more than one right answer", and "there are many more ways to try again."

Third, when children achieve their goals or demonstrate a willingness to learn, compliments should be clearly conveyed to boost your child's self-confidence. Compliments should focus on the process ("You showed good self-control by going to bed early because you know you have to wake up early for class!" or "I can see that you have tried again and again to solve the problem. I really like your diligence") rather than the results (“Did you score 100 marks?”).

When children are young, it is only natural for them to be "unsure” about the world.

So, parents have the responsibility to teach them important life principles, to become their coaches (and sometimes playmates), and set boundaries for them to follow. When they grow up and can finally understand these boundaries, parents can then let go and give their children the respect and space they need.

This is the key to cultivating EQ and AQ, which are far more important than IQ.

STUDENT’S CORNER Part of nurturing global citizens includes exposing students to the world and the beauty, variety and diversity that comes with it. Thus, we make every effort to provide opportunities for our students to engage with others on an international level.

As part of this effort, our school has a standing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Handong Global University (HGU) in South Korea, offering various opportunities for collaboration through exchange programs, and Annual Summer Leadership Camps.

In the next two issues of Jubli Times, we will be featuring our collaboration with HGU, starting with one of Seri Jubli’s alumni, Ethan Raj (class of 2017), who is currently studying there. Let us hear from him as he shares his experiences studying abroad!

Q1. What course are you studying now and why did you choose this course?

I currently have 2 majors, like all the other students here in Handong. My first major is called “Education and Adolescent Counselling”, where I learn the theories of education and also the methods of counselling. My second major is “English”, where I learn about the English language and specialise in literature. I chose these two majors because I want to be an English teacher in the future who also knows how to counsel students. I am currently in my 3rd year and expect to graduate in the year 2022 after my internship program.

Q2. Tell us about HGU. HGU stands for Handong Global University and global it really is. Our student body is made up of mostly Koreans, but we also have students from about 50 other countries as well. This makes it easy to learn about other countries’ cultures, languages and traditions. The international community here is really diverse and helps broaden our worldview. This is also true for our professors as there are international staff who come from places such as the US, South America and Germany. Our professors here are kind, understanding and passionate about teaching. Many of them take the time to get to know each student in class so that everyone feels comfortable. Here in HGU, we also have a team system where a mentor professor

is assigned to every 40 students, and the team meets once a week to fellowship and to learn from one another. This is an experience that you cannot get in other universities.

The campus is located in Pohang, South Korea, on a hill where it is quiet and peaceful. We have a lot of nature around us and there is even a lake behind the university where students can hang out. The campus is not too big. It only takes 20 minutes to walk around it by foot, so it is really convenient. The facilities here include football fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, gyms and study rooms that students are free to use.

Also, most classrooms are equipped with the latest technology that supports our learning.

Q3. What is it like studying in HGU?

Q4. Did you experience any sort of culture shock?

A typical weekday for me in HGU is waking up around 9am and getting ready for classes. The number of classes I have each day varies each semester, but it is usually around 3 a day. At 12pm, I have lunch with my classmates or friends and then finish up with classes. After that is done, I usually rest or hang out with my friends till the evening and have dinner with them. At night, I attend club meetings or do my assignments until I go to sleep! On the weekends, I usually go downtown to a nice cafĂŠ or watch movies at the cinema.

Sometimes, if the weather is good, we go to a nearby beach for picnics.

In Korea, we are not allowed to throw toilet paper into the toilet bowl! Instead, you usually throw it into a bin that is next to the toilet bowl. I was so shocked when I saw this because it was not something I was used to, and the smell was really bad! Another interesting story is regarding my roommate. He brought a jar of pickles from his country and the pickles had a very pungent smell and it would stink up the whole room when he opened it. Yikes!

Our living space is very fun too! We have 4 people to a room and most of the time, we all come from different countries.

Though sometimes it is hard to get along because of cultural differences, most of the time it is a fun experience to get to know other people and their countries. One of the highlights of living together is that we usually order Yashik (midnight snacks) like fried chicken or tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) to share and eat together!

Q5. What are some of your best memories on campus?

Some of my best memories are definitely hanging out with my friends who come from different parts of the world. We usually cook some famous dishes from our own countries for each other to try and also play board games together.

Another good memory I had was when my freshmen team had a picnic during spring in my freshmen year. The weather was really nice, and the cherry blossoms had just bloomed so the trees were a beautiful colour of pink. We ended up taking many pictures together.

Q6. What are some pros and cons of studying overseas?

Some of the pros would be that you get to experience a different culture and learn more about it. You also get to meet people from different countries that all have different life stories. It really helps you grow as a person and broadens your perspective, making you a person with a global mindset. You also get to tell others that you studied abroad!

One of the cons would be the language barrier. Since people here don’t really speak English, it is hard to communicate and express yourself sometimes. It is also hard to be away from your family for such a long period of time. Sometimes you just wish you can go home and eat the food prepared by your mom!

7. Do you have any advice for your juniors who are interested to study in HGU? Make sure you are ready to leave your country! Being far away is hard sometimes, but overall, it is a good and fun experience. Also, start learning Korean! It is a big help when you come here if you can speak the language.
