MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

DearStudentsandParents,

TheSeriJubliAnnualCampisback!Iamextremelyexcited aboutitscomebackafterour2-yearhiatus.Thecamp playssuchabigpartinourschool,notjustasaprogram, butasourCULTUREandIDENTITY.Wehaverunitfor6 consecutiveyearsawayfromhome:Stayingbythesea,on amountainoreveninthewoods.Itisatimeforus,asa schoolcommunity,tohavefun,chill,livetogetherand spendtimewithoneanother.Butmostimportantly,it providesuswiththeopportunitytobringeachyeartoa closebyreflectingonthelearningjourneywetook togetherasaschool.Ourschoolcampalwaysconsistsof threemajorelementsthatcanbesummedupin3T’s:

1.Team-spirit: Likeanyothercamp,gamesandactivities areamajorpartofourAnnualCampscheduleto fosterteamworkandteam-spirit.Asweknow,the HouseSystemispartoftheDNAoftheschoolwhere eachstudentisamemberofahouse.Atthecamp,the bulkofthetimewillbespentintheirHouseswhere theyarerequiredtoworktogether,helponeanother, learntogether,resolveconflictswithoneanother,and ultimately,winorlosetogether.Asmuchaswinningis

important,thekeycomponentinallthisistostay unitedasateamandfaceeverythingtogether.A housethatstaystogetherwins!Andthatisour definitionofteam-spirit.

2.Treasuredmemories: Astudent’sjourneyinSeriJubli isnotforever.Atmost,eachstudentspends11years intheschool.Memoriesareatreasurenomoneycan buy.Theycontributetoouridentityandgrowthasa person.Throughoutanyyear,studentsaccumulate differentexperiencesinschoolthatbecome memories.Interestingly,wehavefoundthatour campsusuallycapturethesememoriesinavery uniqueandpowerfulway.Weseeourcampsasa “space”tostoreuptreasuredmemoriesduringour learningjourneythatwecanreminisceandthatwill lastalifetime.

3.Thanksgiving: Rightatthecentreofourschool’score values(VIRTUE)isthewordThankfulness.Asthe sayinggoes,“Whenlifeissweet,sayThankYouand Celebrate;whenlifeisbitter,sayThankYouand Grow.”HereinSeriJubli,weemphasisethe importanceofgratitudeandthankfulness,toponder ontheblessingswehaveandexpressittothepeople aroundus.

TyingupalltheT’stogether,thecampisatimeforusto appreciate,expressandrememberourgratitudetowards oneanotherasateam;tocherishallthememorieswe acquiredtogether,whichhavemadeourlearningjourney fruitfulandrich,andtoendtheyearwithaheartof Thanksgiving.Althoughwewillbeconductingtwoseparate campsthisyear,theethosremains.

时隔两年,致理国际学校年度生活营终于再次回归!如此举 足轻重的年度生活营不仅仅是学校的年度盛典活动之一,也 代表着本校的文化及特殊象征。本校已经连续6年走出家乡, 我们到过海边,上过高山,甚至到森林里,举办了我们的年 度生活营。在这个特别的日子里,大家能一起玩乐、放松心 情、共同度过这个欢乐又难忘的时刻。更重要的是,此生活 营赋予我们一个机会,让大家去反思这一年间共同经历过的 学习旅程来为这一学年划下句点。致理年度生活营可以用3T 元素来概括:

1.团队精神:

正如其他生活营般,各种游戏活动将会是我 们年度生活营的重要环节,以培养合作和团队精神。众 所周知,学院系统制度是本校的重要元素之一,每一位 学生都是学院的一员。在生活营里的大部分时间,学生 们都会与同一学院的其他学生们一起度过,他们需要一 起搭档,互相帮助,一起学习,解决彼此间的纠纷,这 最终将决定他们的输赢。虽说团队胜利很重要,但归根 究底的是想让大家认知到作为一个团队要保持团结,共 同面对所有情况。唯有一心团结的学院方能获胜。这也 是我们对团队精神的定义。

2.珍贵的回忆:学生们在致理国际学校的学习旅程总是会 结束。每位学生仅能在学校里度过11年的学习生活。回 忆的珍贵是任何金钱都买不到的,而回忆更有助于我们 在过往经历中学习成长及建立人格。在这学习生涯中, 学生们会在每个时间段里积累各种不同的经历,而这些 经历将会成为他们的校园回忆。然而,我们意识到这样 的年度生活营更能以一种独树一格和强而有力的方式去 捕捉这些回忆。因此我们将年度生活营视为另一个特殊 的“空间”,让学生们保存这段学习旅途中珍贵的回 忆,并且毕生难忘。

3.感恩:本校的核心价值观(Virtue)中间的T便是感恩这 个词Thankfulness(感恩)。有言道:“当生活很甜 美,对它道谢并且庆祝;而当生活苦涩时,仍然对它道 谢并且成长。”在致理国际学校,我们着重于感恩的重 要性,让我们珍惜自已拥有的祝福并将其传达给我们周 围的人。

若所有T的元素结合在一起,生活营是一个让我们相互传达欣 赏、抒发和牢记作为团队之间的互相感谢的机会。让我们珍 惜彼此间所拥有的共同回忆,使学生们收获硕果累累的学习

经验,并且怀着一颗感恩的心结束这一学年。虽然·我们今 年首次分别在两个地方举办生活营,但精神依旧不变。

亲爱的学生及家长们,

专访林金泉先生

这一期,我们特别采访了本校的家长林金泉先 生。他是居銮探索导览协会的创办人,刚为我

们办了两期中小学家庭教育协助计划亲子活动 <探索南峇山,体验大自然>。林先生本身是个 商人,学生时代由于是童军一员,经常在南峇山 一代活动。7-8年前,他再次返回南峇山,发现

了莫大的变化,南峇山成为了个很多人来休闲,

登山的热点,这也让他再次燃起了爬山探索的兴 趣。那是什么促使他走上生态教育,导览探索的 这条路呢?让我们来看看与他的对话。

「请问您是怎么开始生态导览这条路的?」

几年前,我们的国会议员引进了外地的生态观察专家进来,开始 在南峇山做生态导览。从他们的生态导览中,我发现了我对于南 峇山的生态认知其实很少,从而引发了我更大的兴趣。我就逐渐 的从一个参与者,变成了导师们的助理。由于熟悉路线,我就开 始帮忙规划路线,一起带团做助理,从中获取了很多不一样的知 识。我也自己花时间进去山里多观察,多拍照,遇到不懂的就问 导师,自己上网查询更多资料。我也从当时的一些旅游导览老师 身上学了如何设计导览的内容,如何呈现。这些也就帮我打下了 基础,到后来我就开始自己设立了居銮探索导览协会,做起了在 地南峇山的生态导览。

「您带的导览团,通常是什么群体较多?」

主要是亲子团,学生团,一些外地的城市白领也蛮多的。

候,能够通过导览做深度的旅游,不止是打卡拍照。通过这些活 动,希望能够普及有关生态保护的知识,让大家爱护森林、爱护 大自然。

「您做南峇山的生态导览,最终的目标是什么?」

南峇山是个很靠近市区的景点,我很希望这里能够成为学校作为 户外教学的据点。现代孩子很多都害怕森林野外,觉得脏不舒 服,但实际上大自然是个学习自然环境、动物、生态的最佳教 室,也是个很好的亲子活动地点。也因如此,在设计我的导览的 时候,会穿插知识教育部分,也会有玩乐的部分,尝试让孩子不 会觉得太枯燥。我希望通过我的导览,能够影响更多学校走出教 室,到户外来教学。与此同时,也希望外地的游客来到居銮的时

「听说你也有做南峇山的野生动物调查,可以分享一下你的历程 吗?」

一开始是导师问我,是否知道南峇山有什么野生动物,我没法回 答。导师就建议我观察山里的脚印,我就开始注意起来,但是由 于始终没法确定是什么动物的脚印,就让我更好奇要怎么去确 认。过后我就买了2台便宜的动物红外线摄像机放在森林里拍 摄,结果被我拍到了马来貘和很多其他动物,我便有了信心。过 后更向国会议员申请了预算,添购了12台比较高清的摄像机,装 置在森林里,做长期的野生动物调查。之前很多人觉得南峇山很 小,是个封闭的小山,跟外界森林没什么连接,很难有什么野生 动物。但经我这样装置摄像机拍摄后,真是发现了好多不同的动 物,尤其是马来貘。我或许跟马来貘比较有缘,经常拍到他们, 我就开始更加深入地去了解马来貘的习性,也开始辨认不同特征 的马来貘来计算他们的数量。通过我粗略的计算,我估计南峇山 现在估计有15-20只的马来貘。

「请问您通过拍摄来调查这些野生动物的初衷是什么?」

我的拍摄,其实有些人不认同,他们觉得我会引起一些不 法分子的注意,引诱他们来盗猎。但是我的想法不同, 我觉得通过这种调查,会让更多人对我们的南峇山野生 动物有更多的认识与意识,通过教育能够让大家更加了解

这些动物的生存状况与森林的生态环境,从而促使大家更加 爱护我们的环境,一起来保护这些动物。又或者,哪天有开发 商要开发我们的山林的时候,我也可以及时提出野生动物存在 的证据,为申请保护森林尽一份力。

大自然本身是个很 棒的宝库,里面很神 奇,可以吸引孩子的

好奇心。孩子们进到森林里面,五感全开:他们需要用耳朵 听,培养听觉听森林里的声音;用眼睛看,培养视觉寻找不 同动植物;培养触觉,触碰他们看到的东西;用鼻子嗅,培 养嗅觉探索森林里的各种气味并辨别;培养感觉,感受森林 里的温度,环境的变化。这些都可以从而加强孩子的观察、 探索、研究和思考能力。

在森林行走的时候,孩子可以加强肢体动作的协调,培养他们 不怕困难、不怕肮脏、不怕危险的精神。我们一直说现代的 孩子是“草莓族”-不敢尝试、不够吃苦耐劳,其实很多时 候是我们不让孩子有这个机会。大自然,是我们让他们有这 个机会的最佳场所,您会发现孩子进到森林里无所不能,他们 不会害怕也会找到信心。

很庆幸,我们身在居銮,有个这么靠近和方便我们到访的南 峇山。家长们应该善加利用我们这个便利,多带孩子们走进大 自然体会,对孩子的身心发展非常有益。也希望学校能够多 举办这类型的户外教学 给我们的孩子。谢谢!

InthisissueofJubliTime,weconductedaspecialinterviewwithoneofour parents,Mr.LimKimChuan,whoisthefounderofPertubuhanSahabatAlam SekitarKluang.Aspartofourschool’sParentingSupportProgram,Mr.Lim ledusontwoeco-toursforourparent-childactivity<Experiencethe EcosystemofGunungLambak>,whichwasopenedtobothourprimaryand secondarystudentsaswellastheirparents.EventhoughMr.Limisactuallya businessman,whenhewasastudent,hewasamemberoftheboyscouts, andhaddonemanyactivitiesaroundGunungLambak.7-8yearsago,when hereturnedtoGunungLambakagain,hediscoveredmanychanges.Gunung Lambakhadbecomeahotspotformanypeopletorelaxandhike,whichalso rekindledhisinterestinhikingandexploration.So,whatpromptedhimto embarkonthispathofecologicaleducationandexploration?Checkour interviewwithhimbelow:

1.Howdidyoustartdoingecotours?

Afewyearsago,ourMPsbroughtin ecologicalexpertsandstarteddoing ecologicaltoursatGunungLambak. Fromtheirtours,Irealisedthatmy knowledgeofGunungLambakwas actuallyverylimited.This,inturn, arousedmyinteresttoknowmore.I graduallyprogressedfrombeingjusta participanttoanassistant.SinceIwas familiarwithGunungLambak,Ibegan tohelpplantherouteandleadthe groupasanassistant.Fromthis,I gainedalotofadditionalknowledge.I alsotookthetimetogointothe mountainstoobservemore,takemore photos,askifIdidnotunderstand anything,andsearchformore informationontheInternet.Ialso learnedhowtodesignthecontentof thetourfromsomeofthetourguides andhowtopresentit.Thesealso helpedtolaymyfoundation.Afterthat, IdecidedtosetupthePertubuhan

SahabatAlamSekitarKluangand startedtoorganiseecologicaltoursat theGunungLambakbymyself.

2.Whatgroupsdoyouusuallytake onyourguidedtour?

Mainlyparent-child(ren)groups, studentgroups,orworkingadultsfrom outsideKluang.

3.Whatisyourultimategoalfor theGunungLambakeco-tours?

AsGunungLambakisveryclosetothe city,Ihopeitcanbecomeanoutdoor teachingbasefortheschools.Many childrennowadaysareafraidofnature andtheoutdoors,theyareworried aboutgettingdirtyandfeeling uncomfortable.Butinreality,natureis thebestclassroomtolearnaboutthe environment,animalsandecology.Itis alsoagoodplaceforparent-child activities.Becauseofthis,when designingmytours,Imakesurethere isabalanceoflearningnewknowledge andhavingfunsothatit isnottooboringforthe children.Ihopethat throughmytours,Ican influencemoreschools togooutofthe classroomandteach outdoors.Atthesame time,Ialsohopethat whentouristsfrom

otherplacescometoKluang,theycan reallyexperiencenaturethroughthe guidedtours,andnotjusttake pictures.Throughtheseactivities,I hopethatknowledgeaboutprotecting theenvironmentbecomescommon knowledgeandhelpspeoplelearnto lovenature.

4.Iheardthatyouhavealsodone wildlifesurveysatGunung Lambak,canyoushareabout that?

Atthebeginning,myinstructorasked meifIknewaboutanywildanimalsat GunungLambak,butIcouldn'tanswer him.Theinstructorthensuggested thatIobservetheanimalfootprints whilehiking.Istartedtopaymore attention,butIstillcouldnot determinewhatanimalfootprintsthey weresoIbecamemorecurious.After that,Ibought2cheapanimalinfrared camerastouseintheforest.Asa result,Iwasabletophotograph Malayantapirsandmanyother animals.Thisgavemeconfidence. Afterthat,Iappliedforabudgetfrom theMPtopurchase12 high-definitioncameras, whichwereinstalledin theforestforlong-term wildlifesurveillance.

Beforethis,manypeople thoughtthatGunung

Lambakwasaverysmallhillwithnoconnectiontothe outsideforests,soitwasdifficulttospotanywildanimals. ButafterIsetupthesecameras,Ifoundalotofdifferent animals,especiallytheMalayantapir.PerhapsIamlucky whenitcomestoMalayantapirsasImanagedtophotograph themonmanyoccasions.Ibegantounderstandthehabitsof Malayantapirsmoredeeplyandtriedtoidentifythedifferent MalayantapirsIhavephotographedinordertocountthem accurately.Throughmyroughcalculation,Iestimatethat therearecurrently15-20MalayantapirsinGunungLambak.

Actually,somepeopledidnotagreewithwhatIdid.They feltthatIwouldattractpoachers.Butmythoughtsare different.Throughthiskindofsurvey,morepeoplewill havetheknowledgeandawarenessofthewildlifein GunungLambak.Wecanalsoeducatemorepeople aboutthehabitatoftheseanimalsandtheecologyofthe forest.Throughthis,wecan urgeeveryonetocaremore aboutourenvironmentand protecttheseanimalstogether. Perhapsoneday,ifadeveloperwants toclearourforestfordevelopment,I

canalsoprovideevidenceoftheexistenceofwildlifeinGunung Lambakanddomyparttoapplyforforestprotection.

7.Finally,isthereanythingelseyouwouldliketo saytoourstudents,parentsorreadersofthis article?

Natureitselfisawonderfultreasuretrovethatismagicaland canappealtoachild'scuriosity.Childrenentertheforest usingallfivesenses:astheylistenwiththeirears,they learntolistentothesoundsintheforest;astheyseewith theireyes,theylearntofinddifferentanimalsandplants; theydeveloptheirsenseoftouchastheytouchwhatthey see;astheysmellwiththeirnose,theycultivatetheirsense ofsmelltoexploreandidentifythevarioussmellsinthe forest;astheycultivatetheirsenses,theycanfeelthe temperaturechangesoftheenvironmentintheforest.These canenhanceourchildren'sobservation,exploration, researchandthinkingskills.

Whenwalkingintheforest,childrencanimprovethe coordinationoftheirbodymovementsandlearnnottobe afraidofdifficulties,dirtanddanger.Manytimes,wefeel thatthisgenerationofchildrenareweak–theydonotdare totryandarenothard-workingenough.Inreality,many timeswedonotletourchildrenhaveopportunitiestotry. Natureisthebestplaceforustogivethemthis opportunity.Youwillfindthatchildrenwhohavebeen closetonaturearenotafraidandtheywillfindconfidence.

WeareveryfortunatethatweareinKluangandhave GunungLambaksocloseandconvenientforustovisit. Inmyopinion,theM.A.DFundraisingProjectwasthebiggest challengewehavefacedthisyear.Somememberswerequite uncooperativeandwealsofacedsomeissueswithourbudget, butwemanagedto"survive"andraisedagreatamountof moneyforourfundraisingevent.

4.Shareyourexperienceaboutthefundraiser.

Asaleader,Ilearnedhowtocoordinateandleadmyhouse membersbetter.Andasahouse,wealllearnedtoworkwith eachother.Mostimportantly,welearnedhowtobekindand helpotherswhoareinneed.

5.Isthereanythingyou’dliketoadd?

Inaddition,wehadtheM.A.DFundraisingProjectsin conjunctionwithOpenDay.Wehad3carnivalgames:Roller Pong,GetintheGoalandCatchtheFish.Wealsosetupsome boothstosellEden’sbooklets,vegetables,foodanddrinks madebyuslikemoistchocolatecake,cookiesandsodadrinks. Alsospecialthanksabunchofoursponsors–RealBread (donated50organicredbeanbuns),Yomie’sRiceXYogurt (sponsored50cupsofyogurtdrinks)andTheAlley(gaveusa discountforthedrinkswepurchased).

3.Didyoufaceanychallengeswhilepreparingforthis fundraiser?

Duringthepreparationstage,weencounteredalotof challenges.Forexample,onoursecondlastdayofpreparation, werealisedthatoneofthegamesweplannedwasthesameas anotherhouse’sbuttheirsetupanddecorationweremuch betterthanours.Thatforcedustochangeourgamelast minute.Butitwasnotallbad.Weactuallyhadalotoffun

duringthedayitself.Everyonewassoactiveandenergetic! Someofuskeptgoingaroundtopromoteoursnacks,somuch sothattheyevenmadenewfriends!

4.Shareyourexperiencefromthisfundraiser.

WechoseanOldFolksHome(MiriamHome).Ithasbeena shelterhomefortheelderlyforthelast30years.Itisnotonlya shelterbutahomeoflove,care,integrityandresponsibility.We choseMiriamHomebecausewewantedtohelpthem financiallyandalsovisitthepeoplethere.

2.Whatdidyourhousedotoraisefundsforyour charityorganisation?

Wesetupthreeboothsandalsoahauntedhousetoraise funds.WehadArchery,CoconutBowlingandHoopsforthe threebooths.WealsocameupwithanideaofanEscapeRoom withaHauntedHousetheme.

encountersomefunnymoments.Wewereworriedthatour HauntedHousewasverynotrealorscaryenough,butinthe end,somechildrenwhocametoplayendedupcryingand refusedtocontinueplayingbecausetheyweretooscared!We feltbadforthem,butatthesametime,itfeltgoodthatour HauntedHousewasdonewell!Infact,theHauntedHousewas sopopularthatitwasfullybookedevenbeforenoon.

Itwastiringbutweenjoyedthisfundraisingproject.Wehave cometounderstandhowharditistohandleourownbooths andHauntedHouse.IbelievetheIgnismembershavelearntto bemoreresponsiblefortheirownprojectsandIfeelwehave improvedinourteamworkthroughthisfundraisingproject.

IwouldliketothanktheIgnishouseteachersandalsoTr.Zul. Withoutthem,ourboothsandHauntedHousewouldnothave beenreadyforthisevent.Iwouldalsoliketothanktheleaders ofthethreeboothswhodidagreatjobdecoratingtheirbooths! I’dalsoliketoappreciatethememberswhoactedastheghosts astheyhadtobeintheirlongandstuffycostumesforhours duringthegame.Lastly,Iwouldliketothankallthemembers forbeingcooperativeandhelpful.

3.Didyoufaceanychallengeswhilepreparingforthis fundraiser?

TheHauntedHousewasthemostchallengingforus.Although wespentafewmonthstoprepareforit,itwasdifficultbecause weranoutofideasabouthowtofillinallthespaceinthe HauntedHouse.Wedidnothaveenoughpropsandwealso ranoutoftimetofinishthepreparation.However,wedid

Withinthesefewmonths,welearnedalotofnewskillsand gainednewexperiences,suchashowtoorganiseanevent,how tocommunicatewithyourteammembers,howtocreatea budget,etc.Mostimportantly,thesemomentsthatwespent togetherwilldefinitelybeapreciousmemoryforalloftheTerra members.

2.Whatdidyourhousedotoraisefundsforyour charityorganisation?

Ourhouse,Terra,setupthreeboothsduringtheOpenDay.We soldplants,whichmatchesthethemeofourhouse.Wealso hadasnacksboothsellingcranberriescookies,cupcakesand sparklingdrinks.Weweresohappythatwemanagedtofinish sellingeverything!ThethirdwasaseriesofGameBooths:we had“dart-balloons”whichattractedmostofthecustomers,the “amazingballtoss”(throwingpingpongballsintoholes)and “hitmewithyourbestshot”.Besidesthat,wehadateamof buskersperformingthroughouttheday.

Weactuallyfacedalotofchallengesduringthepreparation stagesaswehadinsufficienttimetoprepareafterfinalising

WewouldliketotakethisopportunitytoappreciateHorti Plantsforsupplyinguswiththeplantsataveryaffordable price.WealsoreallyappreciatealloftheteachersandTerra members,thankyouforyourcontribution! Duringthesefewmonths,wehavegrowninourhousespirit andteamworkamongTerramembers.Welearnedtogether, laughedtogetherandgrewclosertoeachother.Iguessthisis thepurposeofhavingahousesystem–Afterall,wearefamily!
