LEADING OUR OFFERTORY PRAYER Gary Branch first joined Second-Ponce as a child in the 1950’s, returning again in 2009. He has served as a Deacon, on the personnel committee and as a substitute Sunday School teacher. He enjoys working for Chick-fil-A as a franchisee. Gary and his wife, Debbie, are often busy visiting their five children and nine grandchildren who are scattered across the country.

WELCOME, REV. ELLEN SECHREST Rev. Ellen Sechrest joined the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship staff on February 18, 2019 as Manager of Global Missions Engagement. She brings 29 years of local church experience as a youth minister and minister of missions and spiritual formation. Nearly 27 of these years were spent at Boulevard Baptist Church, a CBF partner church in Anderson, S.C. A North Carolina native, Ellen is a graduate of Mars Hill College (B.S.) and Southern Seminary (MDiv). Her work with CBF is to engage churches into deeper relationships with CBF through missions, engagement with our field personnel, the Encourager Church program, and CBF life in general. We're excited to have Ellen join us today as an integral part of formalizing our Encourager Church partnership with Janée Angel. Welcome, Ellen!

We meet for Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. and offer two worship opportunities: A traditional service in our Sanctuary at 11 a.m. and a contemporary service called All Together in our SPdL Theater at 4 p.m. We share Fellowship Supper Wednesdays at 5 p.m. followed by activities for children, youth & adults. During the week there are Bible studies, special events, guest speakers and more.

OPPORTUNITY TO PRAY FOR OUR WOMEN'S RETREAT February 9–16 | During church hours of operation | Prayer Room As Christians, one of the most powerful things we can do is to pray for one another, and the coordinators of this year's women's retreat have created a simple and meaningful way you can pray for their upcoming gathering.

Beginning today through February 16, the Prayer Room (across from the Chapel) will be set up with crosses marked with the names of each woman attending the Be Still retreat. We ask that you hold each cross and pray for the person whose name is shared. These prayer crosses will be given to the women during the retreat as a reminder of the love and support of their church family.

MERCER SINGERS AT SPdL MARCH 1 Sunday, March 1 | 11 a.m. | Sanctuary The Mercer University Singers, under the direction of Mercer alum Dr. Stanley Roberts, will be leading our 11 a.m. worship service through music on Sunday, March 1. WELCOMING JANÉE ANGEL TO SECOND-PONCE Janée Angel is a Cooperative Baptist Fellowship field personnel living and serving in Antwerp, Belgium, working particularly among the Arabic speaking community, which is ever growing in the midst of the world refugee crisis.

After working among Arabic speakers in an Arabic/French church in Brussels for 6 years, Janée and her family moved to Antwerp in a church planting effort to establish the first evangelical Arabic church outside the Brussels area. Today, the church holds weekly services and Bible studies, has a music ministry and children’s program, and Janée hosts women’s events and a prayer group.

Janée and Hary seek to meet the needs of the rapidly growing refugee community.

Confronted with the global refugee crisis, Belgium has greeted many Iraqi and Syrian refugees. Hary leads the efforts in meeting these newcomers and showing them the love of Christ. Together, they host refugee dinners and open their home to those with nothing.

Janée and Hary also collect food and clothing to distribute and have filled backpacks with winter clothes and Middle Eastern snacks to give to refugees in harsh winter months.

Hello Second-Ponce de Leon! As Hary, the girls, Phoebe and Maria-Grace, and I serve the Lord among Arabic speakers in Belgium, we know what a privilege it is to have partners who support us and minister with us. Thank you for this new partnership through CBF! We are grateful for the opportunity to learn more about one another and see where God leads us together. We look forward to meeting you face to face, either through mission trips to Antwerp, Belgium or a visit to your church in Georgia. We cherish the partnership in prayer and knowing that others are lifting up our pressing needs with us. We love the encouragement of knowing we are not in this work alone. Thank you for the blessing and gift you are to our family as we walk into this covenant together.

OPPORTUNITIES TO PRAY Earlier this week, Janée shared the following prayer requests: Antwerp has 30 churches who are unable to get a permit to gather as a legally recognized body, and we are one of those churches. We are working toward meeting the requirements to get this permit but the city workers who are no longer friendly with Christians are trying to discourage us from completing the paperwork. Our next appointment with the city is Tuesday morning, February 11. Please pray for us and the city worker we will be meeting with, Bert de Wilde.

Our local non-profit is called “Christ for All Nations.” In the last two years, we have started three churches and two new Bible studies. One of our local pastors of the Lier Church, George, who is also a refugee from Syria, has cancer and the doctors have told him there is nothing more they can do. Please pray for George, his wife Natasha and their 3 teenage children.

Pray for our family and our protection as we work all over the country with Arabic speakers.

We are often exhausted and Hary is on the road a lot working as a part-time welder.

LET’S TALK ABOUT BEING AN ENCOURAGER CHURCH CBF Encourager Churches are a crucial component to the work of CBF field personnel around the world. A congregation becomes an Encourager Church when it formalizes its relationship with specific field personnel. There is flexibility in this program where churches can shape the details of the partnership to best fit their needs and the needs of the field personnel with whom they partner. CBF suggests that Encourager Churches include four encouragement areas: prayer support, program support, short-term engagement and financial support. OUR FOUR AREAS OF ENCOURAGEMENT PRAYER SUPPORT Second-Ponce covenants to integrate prayer requests from Janée into the prayer life of our congregation. Janée will bring our joys and concerns before the global church.

PROGRAM SUPPORT Second-Ponce covenants to develop and maintain this partnership at the local level by becoming an advocate for Janée in our community and supporting her ministry needs when she is stateside.

SHORT-TERM ENGAGEMENT Second-Ponce covenants to work alongside Janée and support a model for CBF missions that is relational, sustainable and values mutuality. These onsite experiences will bless Janée, those she serves and our congregation.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT Second-Ponce covenants to financially support Janée’s ministry in a variety of ways including recurring gifts from individuals, love offerings from groups, funds from our missions budget and through “in honor of” gifts to the CBF Offering for Global Missions.

ENCOURAGER CHURCH AS A CORE VALUE Becoming an Encourager Church is both a privilege and a responsibility. Our partnership with Janée allows us to live more fully into our church’s four core values. Here’s how we connect the dots: Worship: A commitment to support those God has called to loving and compassionate service is an act of worship. Today, we honor that act by signing this covenant during a worship service. God has empowered Second-Ponce and Janée to bear witness to the Gospel together as members of a global church body.

Community: We believe God wants us to genuinely care for one another, and Janée’s direct ministry to Arabic speakers and refugees in Belgium is an extension of our desire to “welcome the stranger.” Janée demonstrates, on our behalf, the kingdom of God on earth.

Mission: Second-Ponce has committed to offering hope and modeling love through deep and long-term connections to missions organizations. Our covenant with Janée allows us to participate both directly and indirectly in transforming the lives of those she serves. In this way, there is both joy and meaning in our mission work.

Discipleship: As followers of Christ, the Second-Ponce family is intentional to support the individual calls God places on our lives. Our covenant with Janée not only celebrates her God-given gifts but uses her work with refugees to deepen our own prayer lives, strengthen our stewardship and propel us toward fulfilling the Great Commission.
