A Note From Your Publisher

I am excited to announce the inaugural issue of Scuttlebutt Southeast, an expansion magazine from our long-time running publication, Great Lakes Scuttlebutt.

Great Lakes Scuttlebutt magazine was founded in 1992 by Jerry Kyle. He quickly established a “free” magazine model with distribution at marinas, yacht clubs, boat shows, marine stores and businesses. After working the western basin of Lake Erie and western Lake St. Clair for nine years with great success, Jerry retired and passed the magazine along to his son, Erik Kyle.

Erik expanded the publication's reach to the coasts of every Great Lake. In the mid 2000’s, the magazine went fully glossy and started to use multiple digital platforms like a website, e-newsletter (Scuttlebitts), social media outlets, and a very powerful digital version of each issue.

I came on board this year to help with the expansion of the Scuttlebutt brand and to launch my first publication, which is currently serving the Carolinas and Georgia regions. I have

plans to expand to Southeast Florida in 2025, to create a fully regional “Southeast” magazine, designed exclusively for boaters.

Scuttlebutt Southeast offers six issues every year, and they can be found at over 500 marine locations throughout the Southeast region, in addition to 20+ boat shows per year.

We’re looking forward to joining you in the 2024 boating season in the Southeast, and we hope you all enjoy this first issue. A huge thank you to our first partners of Scuttlebutt Southeast. We certainly could not have launched this magazine without you, and we are excited for what the future holds.

Here’s to a fantastic boating season in 2024!

THE SHRINKING BOAT ENCLOSURE CONUNDRUM!

EZ-Xtend Zippers Help?

As a boater, you may have found your boat canvas and enclosures have shrunken over time, and you can no longer zip or snap them in place.

Would relaxing the fit by 1 inch in a few key places help you get snapped and zipped again?

Introducing EZ-Xtend Boat Zipper, a novel patented zipper invention that relaxes the fit instantly by 1 inch with no sewing required.

Zip EZ-Xtend zipper in place on your boat, patio enclosure, jeep, or golf cart, and you will be warm and dry again. The only tools required are a pair of scissors to cut your zipper to the desired length and pliers to squeeze on the zipper stop.

This handy zipper was invented by Tammy Hampton of Cover Girl Marine Canvas & Upholstery in 2011. Tammy was once a live-aboard sailor who learned the marine canvas and upholstery trade by working at a little shop in Port Salerno, Florida in the early 80s. In 1988, Tammy started her own shop called Cover Girl Canvas & Upholstery in Buford, Georgia. Located on Lake Lanier, she has access to a lake community which boasts of having the largest inland marina in the world.

As Tammy began to connect with boaters around the country about the EZ-Xtend Zipper, she began to see that her wonderful extended community of boaters needed her 40 years of expertise to solve other boat canvas problems as well.

Out of desire to help fellow boaters with their needs, she eventually opened her own online store which is now known as Boat Cover Repair Advisor, a full-service online boat canvas and sewing supply store that sells marine fabrics, snaps, tools, threads, zippers and so much more. She and her team lovingly manufacture in-house, providing the highest quality boat cover and Bimini straps made anywhere. Guaranteed!

Tammy still works behind the scenes, connecting with boaters all over the world.

GREAT VHF COMMUNICATIONS

The VHF radio is the primary way boaters communicate with one another (particularly if they don’t know each other), bridges and often marinas, not to mention call for help. What does it take for crisp, clear communication that gets the job done?

Wind Noise

Wind hitting your radio mic makes a lot of noise in your transmission—rumbly, freight-train like noise that drowns you out no matter how strong your signal might be. It’s funny but usually if someone complains that they can’t hear you over the engine noise, it’s actually wind noise that they’re hearing.

You might be able to turn your back to the wind, but it’s even better to try to get into protected space such as behind the windshield or dodger. Throttling back so that your boat speed is causing less “wind” can also help.

How To Speak

If someone is having a hard time hearing you, don’t try to talk louder or yell. Slowing down your speech will help far more. We’ve all heard the high-speed Coast Guard announcements where you can only catch every other word . . . or less. Don’t emulate them! Leaving a tiny pause between each word helps immeasurably.

To be well understood you have to speak clearly and directly into the mic, but you also need to try to retain natural speech patterns. Most attempts to hyper-enunciate words don’t lead to better understanding. If you’re saying “foggy” and they’re hearing it as “doggy,” spell it phonetically: foxtrot-oscar-golf-golf-yankee.

If you have trouble remembering the phonetic alphabet, keep a cheat sheet next to the radio.

Scuttlebutt Southeast // SUMMER // July/August 2024
USE THE VHF MAKE SURE EVERYONE CAN Check Out Our Handy VHF Reference Guide IN AN EMERGENCY products.theboatgalley.com 20 // SAFETY //

Push To Talk (PTT)

To transmit on a VHF radio, you must push the “talk” button in. It’s not activated until fully pushed in. So be sure to fully press the mic key in before you start to speak. That is push it, wait a beat, then start talking. Far too many people start talking as they are starting to push the button in, and thus cut off the first word or two of their transmission.

Using the Right Power

If there is more than one transmission on a given channel, the strongest one will be heard. Usually, one will overpower the other; sometimes you may hear a mutilated mess of both.

VHF radios all have a hi/low power option. So, theoretically, you could just always leave your radio on high power and hope to always be the strongest radio so that your message gets through.

High power on a good radio with a tall antenna can give you a range of 25 miles or more. The thing is, many times we don’t need to contact someone anywhere near that far away. But if we use high power on a base station radio, we’ll tie up that channel for hundreds or maybe even thousands of boats within that radius. It’s especially a problem in areas with lots of boats all calling each other and various bridges, as can happen on the ICW.

Instead, choosing low power is the better choice when calling anyone that you think is less than a mile away: the marina office or fuel dock from your slip, the bridge that you can see in the distance, or another boat in the anchorage, for example. They’ll be able to hear you just fine but boats further away won’t, and you won’t tie up the airwaves for important or even emergency calls.

The Bottom Line

Your boat’s VHF radio is an important bit of gear out on the water, both for fun and as your safety lifeline. Clear communications are key and these four items will ensure great results for you – and the other boaters around you.

Buy Marine Safety Graphics™ Products?

Safe-Fill™ Graphics was created after a 2019 unfortunate and very expensive miss-filling event of a friend’s 40 foot aft-cabin cruiser. This resulted in the complete loss of his boating season and the necessary purging of the fuel system along with the removal and rebuilding of both big–block inboard gas engines.

This event reminded us of similar events in the general aviation industry from the late1980’s. Resulting in the FAA ‘s to mandate identification standardization to eliminate this miss-filling problem in GA aircraft.

From these previous aviation experiences Safe-Fill™ Graphic was created in 2019 to fit large to small recreational boats to enhance safety and minimize costly mistakes of cross filling your boat or missfilling your water, waste, rod holders with gas or diesel. To fit these multiple designed boats and fillers each Safe-Fill™ Graphic comes in 3 sizes and series of large, mid-size, and limited space graphic. Each graphic is self- adhesive, UV and Fuel resistant and defined by color and corresponding script.

An article in Boat U.S. Magazine (February/March 2021) stated, “Make sure you’re putting fuel into the correct tank. GEICO/BoatU.S. Marine Insurance receives claims each year from someone pumping fuel into a Rod Holder or Water Tank”.

In 2021, the average cost of pumping out just 1 gallon of contaminated fluids from your boat was $5.00. Pumping an average 40-gallon tank can cost $200.00 or more! The fore mentioned average pumping fee DOES NOT include labor or additional disposal fees. Not only do you have to deal with these disposal cost now you have to deal with the costs of a fuel system flush out, filter replacement, and, if you ran the boat, your engines may be facing a potential total engine rebuild due to cylinder scoring.

CAUTION: Know what you are doing!

As published in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Boating Skills & Seamanship, Core Course Section 4-2; When fueling, it pays to know what you are doing. For example, people have pumped gasoline into water tanks. Gasoline has even been pumped into Rod Holders. Both of these errors, on occasion, have resulted in explosions and serious injuries. Be certain that you are pumping the gas into your gas tank and not your bilge. – U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary

ON BOARD, ON GUARD!®

INSPECT YOUR FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS AND CO ALARMS

Before you put your boat in the water this season you need to inspect two of the most important safety systems on the vessel:

1. Fire suppression system

2. Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms Fire Suppression System

Many boats with inboard engines and/or generator compartments are fitted with an automatic fixed fire extinguishing system. If not, they should be!

These systems automatically discharge at 175°F and put the fire out without intervention. A pull cable is often included for manual actuation as well.

These systems should be inspected annually to make sure they will operate properly:

1. Inspect the extinguisher and verify there are no signs of rust.

2. Make sure the gauge is up to pressure.

3. Remove the extinguisher and verify the weight is correct, indicating the clean agent has not leaked out (the correct weight is listed on the extinguisher label)

4. Verify the operation of the pull cable

5. Verify the operation of the helm display and/or Engine Shutdown Module, including the “Override” switch

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms

All boats should be equipped with a CO Alarm because carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can kill you! Carbon monoxide is created any time fossil fuels are burned, i.e. gasoline, propane and diesel fuel. And CO can come from another boat even if yours is not running!

All enclosed spaces like a cabin, bunk or salon should be fitted with one. Even areas closed in by flexible curtains or eisenglass can fill with CO and create a deadly situation.

ABYC requires them on all new boats, and some states like Minnesota require them on all boats operating in the state’s waters.

They should be tested every time you operate the boat to make sure they are working properly. All you need to do is press the “Test” button and wait for the beep.

Keeping these systems operating properly will help you have safe and fun days on the water!

Oriental, NC

They say that they are pleasantly aware of the four seasons, but their fall is long and warm, and their winter is only occasionally dusted with snow and mild enough to allow year-round jogging, tennis, golfing, and boating on miles and miles of meandering waterways. Apparently, their traffic flows freely, nobody waits in line for anything, and so their people are relaxed and happy. I would say they are describing a tiny corner of heaven. Think about it, how can it not be with all those qualities plus… are you ready? It’s called the “Sailing Capitol of the Carolinas.”

// DESTINATION //

Oriental, North Carolina, on the shores of the Neuse River, is located at 35°1'52"N 76°41'16"W. It has 880 residents according to the latest census and is home for 2,000 boats. It’s also a common stop-over spot for transient boaters (snowbirds) traveling on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) down to Florida. They serve the boaters with their many marinas in and near the village,

While I was looking at the nautical maps, I had an “aha” moment. I just realized why they say residents of Oriental end up having three kinds of boats. They’d have a kayak or canoe for enjoying the shallow rivers around them, a sailboat for enjoying the open waters, and lastly, a boat for good coastal game fishing. That helps to explain how a town with 880 residents ends up with 2,000 boats, by the time you add in the transient boats of ICW travelers. If you are a resident, I bet it would be hard to hold back from becoming a member of the several sailing clubs in the village. The preeminent racing club is the Oriental Dinghy Club (ODC). They have races every year and are the organizing authority for other high-profile

My above description of Oriental may give you the impression that this quaint village of 880 residents is only a huge resort marina. Well, the town also has a sizable fresh fishing and seafood industry large enough to feed the entire region. Speaking of seafood, It seems that things have changed a lot since the 1958 National Geographic article titled “Slow Boat to Florida” of Dorothea and Stuart E. Jones, where the primary business in town was wholesale fish houses.

Our source of inspiration, the Jones, back in 1958, could not buy any seafood even though, as they put it, “The town’s livelihood comes wholly from the sea, in tons of shrimp, fish, crab, and oysters. Yet, strolling the quiet streets, we couldn’t buy any seafood. We asked for shrimp or crab at several places; there was none. Every bit was shipped out in refrigerated trucks immediately after it was landed.” Talk about disappointment. If we were there, any one of us would be equally disappointed, indeed. I’m not sure how many there were back in 1958, but today the town is home to two major fish and seafood wholesale houses in the region. However, if you want to eat seafood, it seems it is available in Oriental’s restaurants and perhaps in some stores. Also, a friendly real estate agent, Chuck Hill, says that there are “tons of good seafood restaurants in Oriental.”

However, when we get there, we have to crank up our virtual Way-Back-ThenMachine, the time capsule generator. We need to observe the changes ourselves between the village of Oriental of 1958 and now, and let you know the status.

Why would you think of an airport when you’re on a sailing journey?

I know it sounds random. Believe it or not, we may not think or plan for it, but many of us who do long-distance destination cruising or sailing do appreciate the idea of having an airport nearby to our destinations, just in case. Think of a situation where you may need to pause your trip for a short while to attend important birthdays, anniversaries, or very special occasions that may be oncein-a-lifetime. Having an airport near your destination points allows you not to be forced to choose between your journey or attending an exceptional event you need to attend. You can do both. The town of Oriental is one of those well-placed destination spots on the Atlantic ICW. It is conveniently located 45 minutes away from the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport (EWN) outside of New Bern, with its 4,000 ft runway. An airport expansion project will soon be underway to extend it to 6,800 ft. Besides private jets and airplanes, currently American Airlines flights connect you to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT).

Navigating the Intracoastal Waterways to Oriental, NC

Sitting along the wonderful Neuse River and providing access to a network of creeks and stunning scenery, Oriental is a year-round destination for anyone who loves life on the water. With regattas held throughout the year, and onshore entertainment including cycling, tennis and the wonderful art galleries, museums and restaurants, whether you are looking for a relaxing time or something more active, you can find it all at Oriental.

North Carolina’s Sailing Capital

There is so much to see and do here that it goes beyond your time on the water, but there is a reason why this region is known as the sailing capital of the state. There are high quality marinas throughout the region, and of course, ‘The Ditch’, or the intracoastal waterways that connect everything in the region.

In Oriental itself, River Dunes is the perfect destination. While the protected waters of the Intracoastal waterway (ICW) take you part of the journey, you also follow the Neuse River itself and its open waters. The marina is a state-of-the-art facility, recently built with everything you need. Cycle hire, a heated swimming pool and hot tub access are all within the marina, along with a convenient store and really helpful site team.

Getting Around

Oriental offers an alternative option for those sailing the ICW, the trip up the Neuse River cuts around 17 miles off the traditional closed water route, so we can begin to see how Oriental established itself as a sailing hub. But more than that, the open waters from Albermarle and Pamlico Sounds are also much less

restricted, and sailboats can operate under wind power rather than be stuck on engines. Not only that, but with just a single bridge that offers 65 feet clearance at high water, it opens up the area to boats that may not manage the journey any other way.

The ICW has huge numbers of bridges, 160 in total along its 1000-mile length, and not all manage that 65 feet clearance. Going under can be a cause for concern, and a few scrapes on tall masts is often the lasting memory of the journey.

An Abundance of Traffic

But for most sailors heading to Oriental or the ICW itself for the first time, the thing that you need to prepare for is the sheer amount of traffic. Things can get busy, and not always with competently captained vessels. That doesn’t mean it is somewhere to avoid though, far from it. But you and your crew should discuss dealing with sometimes unpredictable traffic beforehand and be vigilant and prepared as you navigate around the area.

With so much to do, wonderful waters and beautiful scenery, Oriental really is the capital of sailing in North Carolina. Be prepared for the busy times, though, and you can enjoy it all without a problem, relax and let the magical waterways remind you how good life on the water can really be.

Navigation –Using savvy navvy to explore new waters safely

Explore your local boating area or find new ones

savvy navvy licenses up-to-date and reliable chart information from NOAA and other official hydrographic offices worldwide. As you would with Google Maps, simply open the app and type your desired location into the search bar to find your end destination before slipping lines. Alternatively explore the digital charts to find new and exciting marinas, bays and anchorages.

Plan your route from home

Tap the screen to indicate your start and end destinations and savvy navvy will plot a smart route that accounts for your boat specifications, chart, weather, tidal data and any local restrictions and regulations. You can then use the handy departure schedule feature to find the optimal time to leave for better sailing, fuel consumption and fun!

Smart course corrections

Once you’ve set off on your planned route, savvy navvy’s dynamic navigation mode will adapt for variations in your position, automatically replotting the route and updating your ETA to account for deviations in your journey. Your route will give you essential information such as course over ground, course to steer, speed and distance as well as the time left on your journey. You can even choose between a 3D view with the heading up or stick to the classic 2D view with north up.

If you love boating then you probably know more than most that the sea can be your best friend, and at times, your greatest challenge. Navigation apps like savvy navvy can help you plan your journey, ensuring you stay safe and confident while out on the water.

Every boater should know how to navigate properly; once you do there are ways to make the process quicker and easier. Advances in technology now mean there are apps and websites dedicated to providing you with vital information at the tap of a screen.

Apps, such as savvy navvy, provide an all-in-one sailing navigation solution, combining real-time weather, chart and tidal data for a comprehensive passage plan tailored to your boat specifications. After launching in 2017, savvy navvy has grown rapidly in the US market. The innovative boating app, often referred to as the ‘Google Maps for boats’, stands out for its simplicity, safety and easy-to-use features.

Here are some simple steps on how to make navigation easy with savvy navvy, which is available on any personal device.

View vessel movements with Over the Horizon AIS (OHA)

With 30 percent of boaters, and in some cases even as much as 75 percent, not owning AIS transceivers, this latest savvy navvy feature is hugely popular. See vessels directly on the chart with small and large vessel crafts clearly defined by different colours. Users can also check how crowded the anchorage might be - either from onboard or while planning routes at home. For navigational safety, the savvy navvy app also highlights when no position has been received for more than 30 seconds. Marking the positional variance area around each vessel allows users to be extra vigilant in their navigation.

View conservation areas and safety zones:

Last year, savvy navvy added several types of sustainability data to its platform. This includes clearly marked speedlimit zones to protect marine mammals, designated areas for seagrass protection, and fisheries management zones. The app is one of the first to integrate multiple sustainable data sources from different conservation agencies and bodies. Using US-based ProtectedSeas Navigator data enables boaters to stay safer and make better decisions to protect the marine environment.

TIPS FOR SAFE PASSAGE PLANNING WHEN NAVIGATING COASTAL WATERS

Boating through coastal waters is an extremely enjoyable pastime. Whether you’re taking a day trip along the East Coast or you’re on a longer journey, there is plenty of beauty to find in coastal waters. However, there are potential hazards even in the most picturesque coastal settings, whether it’s a sudden weather change or an unidentified sandbar.

Careful trip planning is essential to ensure your safety in coastal waters, and many boaters are turning to advanced weather apps for help. One of those is PredictWind, a comprehensive marine and weather forecasting tool that helps you plan safe passage anywhere in the world. In this article, we’ll explore how you can use weather apps like PredictWind to stay safe in coastal waters.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT DAY TO TRAVEL

Marine and weather conditions can change quickly, meaning every day can present different challenges. But with the right forecasting tools, you can turn those challenges into opportunities.

PredictWind’s departure planning feature analyses a range of global and local weather models to determine the best day to give you the ideal departure date. You can analyse four days, and the system gives you an overview of all the conditions you could encounter each day. For a day trip along the coast, you can also use departure spacings from 1 hour to 1 day, giving you the best departure time down to the hour.

SELECTING THE SAFEST ROUTE

You need to be flexible with the routes you travel in coastal waters because there are often a lot of hazards. From shallow areas to obscured rocks, there is plenty to avoid. But, while physical hazards can be identified easily, tides, currents and waves aren’t so easy to predict.

That’s why people turn to marine forecasting apps that provide weather routing data. PredictWind, for example, uses weather routing to help you find the safest and most fuelefficient route every time.

PLAN ACCORDING TO YOUR VESSEL’S SPECIFICATIONS

Analysing marine forecasts yourself is time-consuming and doesn’t allow you to identify how your specific vessel might cope with certain conditions. When planning your next East Coast sailing getaway, try using a marine forecasting tool’s wave modelling feature. By entering your boat’s specifications, the system can give you valuable information about the conditions ahead.

Importantly, the information is tailored for your boat. You can see things like the expected roll, vertical acceleration and slamming incidence. Compare the data with different travel times and routes to ensure a more comfortable journey.

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE CURRENTS

Understanding the currents ahead can help you reach your destination faster, save fuel, and avoid dangerous conditions. The PredictCurrent modelling is also part of PredictWind, which you can access through the Weather Routing and Departure Planning functions. With over 90% of the world’s coastlines covered, PredictCurrent gives you more detail than ever before. It features a 400m resolution within 90 km of the coast, which gives you unmatched detail and accuracy.

When you can clearly see the currents in your intended travel area, it’s so much easier to navigate safely. Best of all, you can take advantage of currents to conserve fuel!

MONITOR CONDITIONS CLOSELY

As all experienced boaters will know, all the planning in the world means nothing if you don’t take appropriate safety precautions while out on the water. You must monitor weather and water conditions throughout your trip, and be ready to make adjustments accordingly. In that sense, trip planning remains a constant while you travel.

Another great feature of weather tools like PredictWind is the ability to set up alerts for changing conditions. You can use a range of parameters for these alerts, such as wind speed and direction, rainfall, tides and many more. If your system doesn’t allow alerts, you should still monitor your graphs and displays for changing weather conditions.

SUMMING UP

Basically, careful monitoring ensures you’re never met with any nasty surprises. Sudden changes in conditions are responsible for many boating accidents, but using advanced weather tools like PredictWind and its new PredictCurrent reduces your risk. Prior warning of weather changes allows you to re-plot your course accordingly to avoid dangerous conditions. So, when travelling along the East Coast, always plan your trip carefully and stay ahead of the weather.

The summer provides the best times ever. It is a golden opportunity to take your boat and enjoy the waters' beauty in the Carolinas and Georgia. However, the most important thing is to get your boat ready for the coming season to sail safely and with pleasure. Explore essential boat maintenance tips for a safe and enjoyable summer in the sea.

Whether you're a seasoned sailor or a casual cruiser, sticking to an established maintenance schedule will ensure that your ship remains trustworthy and seaworthy for your many adventures of the coastlines to the rich marine life of the Southeast. This guide provides straightforward tips on boat maintenance that every owner should follow.

Regular Cleaning

Frequency and Techniques: Routine cleaning is not only about aesthetics, it’s also about the preservation of the equipment's lifetime. If you have fresh water available, make use of it to rinse your boat once in a while after every outing, as this helps reduce salt and debris buildup to prevent corrosion. Every two weeks, apply a quality boat wash with a soft brush to keep the surface looking new.

Protective Coatings: Invest in a good wax with a sealant to prevent UV rays and salty water from damaging your boat exterior. Every six months, and by simply applying the wax barrier on your boat, the coating will protect your boat from a bad appearance and, ostensibly, poor performance.

Engine Maintenance

Check Fluid Levels: Before any long outing, always check your engine's oil and coolant levels. Low fluids can lead to engine damage or failure, which could ruin your summer plans. If unsure how to do this, refer to your owner’s manual or seek professional help.

Propeller Inspection: Always check the propeller for indentations, scratches, or any other defects. Even minor defects in the machinery can cause substantial deterioration of performance and an increase in fuel consumption. Ensure it is securely attached and replace the propeller if damages seem extensive.

Scuttlebutt Southeast // SUMMER // July/August 2024

Electrical System Checks

Battery Care: Ensure the battery is well-charged, and examine the terminal condition to see whether it is damaged or corroded. This will impact the capacity of the battery. Sweep the terminals if a sprinkle is needed. As for a longer trip, always harbor a spare battery to be safe.

Lighting and Electrical Connections: Check all lighting before setting out, especially if you plan to be out at dusk or dawn. Ensure all navigation and cabin lights are functioning correctly to avoid any safety issues while on water.

Safety Equipment

Life Jackets and Fire Extinguishers: Be certain you have enough life jackets for all passengers, and inspect their condition to double-check that everything is in order. Fire extinguishers are better kept visible and should not be expired. This measure will make sure that they will be ready to use when needed.

Emergency Procedures: Keep emergency telephone numbers as well as a basic first aid kit somewhere you

can easily access them. Before departures, inform and reinforce the emergency procedures of yourself and all guests or family members aboard the boat. Precaution is an important factor in handling unexpected conditions well.

Conclusion

Ensuring the boat is functioning properly at all times and your safety while on the water will require you to dedicate a specific amount of time to its maintenance. These will be the tricks and tips that will help you to have only the best memories, while summer gets into full swing. A boat, like any other piece of equipment, should be routinely maintained to significantly monitor its life and bring out the best of your boating journeys. Maintenance alone would suffice. When needed, however, do not hesitate to get professional advice. The time of the year has come to go for a swim and happy boating!

Remember, a well-maintained boat means more time on the water and less time in the shop. Stay proactive and enjoy every boating opportunity this season.

BEYOND THE SHINE

UNIQUE WAYS ANGLERS ARE USING SRD20 PRODUCTS TO KEEP THEIR BOATS IN TIP-TOP SHAPE

Lafayette, LA (March 25, 2025) – Another very exciting Bassmaster Classic is behind us, hopefully pulling anglers off the couch and onto the water for springtime bass bites. Farther south—and along both coasts—inshore and blue water anglers are doing what they do the entire calendar year, whether that means reds and seatrout or pelagics offshore.

No matter where or what you fish for, boating anglers all have one thing in common: How best to keep their investment looking good for the long haul.

There are countless cleaning products on store shelves, but only a handful specifically designed for marine use. That’s where SRD20 comes in – a complete “system” of cleaning and protective formulas designed to meet the boat care needs of anglers wherever they fish.

Besides use as a complete system to clean and protect your boat stem-to-stern, some anglers have found unique applications for SRD20 products that the innovators didn’t even intend.

With several top finishes under his belt, collegiate bass angler, Evan Waggener, will be fishing the MLF Toyota Series this summer with plans to pursue professional bass fishing.

“I run an older 2008 Nitro Z9, which I’ve taken care of to make it neat, tidy, and looking new,” says Waggener. “Before every tournament I’ll do a deep clean with SRD20 Pink Soap followed by treating SRD20 Graphene on the exterior to protect it while I’m on the road. Then, when I get off the water after a practice or tournament day, I’ll use their Waterless Wash & Wax to remove any grime from the day.”

Besides treating Graphene on his boat exterior, he also uses it on his outboard to get rid of and prevent water spots.

“A lot of times when you’re tournament fishing and you set the boat down quickly, you get splashes on the back of the outboard. The Graphene keeps those water spots from showing up at the end of the day.”

Waggener adds: “But for my trolling motor, I use SRD20’s Vinyl Protectant. I run a Minn Kota Ultrex and I like to treat the side plates, foot pedal, and motor head to keep everything looking brand new. I’ve also started treating the motor shaft with it, which makes it nice and slick and keeps it from fading in the sun, especially the area around my forward-facing sonar. I also use the Vinyl Protectant on my boat seats and the plastic trim pieces that you’ll find on most bass boats, which will fade over time.”

Inshore & Offshore Use

Destin, Florida Fishing Captain of the Year 2020, Capt. Mark Hotze, runs both near shore and offshore trips via 30A Light Tackle Fishing Charters.

Prior to settling down in Florida, Hotze fished around the world— from Japan to Puerto Rico—amassing a vast angling skillset that focuses on fishing saltwater with light tackle.

“Seems like the fishing changes every six weeks or so, and we concentrate on whatever the best bite is. I’m out every day in my Everglades 243 center console, and the water down here is very tannic, so most boats develop a solid brown line on them at the water level. Me, I like to pull up to the gas station with a big, shiny white boat.”

Prior to discovering SRD20, Capt. Hotze said he used “a lot of other waxes and a big rotary buffer and really went at it to the point it was hard holding on to the buffer.”

“With SRD20 Graphene, you just spray it on and wipe it off. In a matter of minutes, I was impressed how even the rough, beat-up

spots came out looking good. Then I'll follow up with the Waterless Wash & Wax. It might take a month for it to get really dirty now, so it protects, too. Like a lot of anglers, I used to stand at the boat ramp every day with a big bucket of soap and really brush the whole boat down. I hardly ever give it a freshwater rinse now.”

“And if I'm really lazy,” adds Hotze, “when I’m waiting to fill the boat up with 50 to 60 gallons of gas, I'll go around looking for that little brown line and clean it with the Waterless Wash & Wax as I’m filling up.”

Besides the Graphene and Waterless Wash & Wax, Hotze’s also a fan of the Vinyl Protectant—not only for his cushions—but to keep his Minn Kota Riptide trolling motor looking and deploying at its best.

“Besides treating every square inch of the trolling motor, the application to the shaft keeps it looking new and makes it much easier to deploy, it really shoots out after application”

Capt. Hotze concludes: “The Vinyl Protectant is great for cleaning stuff around the boat like where the vinyl and rubber meet the glass of my console, which can get squeaky and fade over time. I coat the track of the windshield with the Vinyl Protectant and I’m good.”

ABOUT SRD20

Our decision to create products to clean and protect the surfaces of boats started years ago, tinkering with our boats, testing endless formulas. After years of discussions with boat owners about cleaning and protecting their boats, it was apparent that most were unhappy. It’s either too much work or the products just don’t perform. SRD20 products work, are easy to apply, and incorporate the newest technologies. Plus, all our products are made in the U.S.A.

The Clean Power Backbone

Connect-Ease® GRAPH POWER® kits offer anglers plug & play solutions for rigging today’s advanced fishing electronics and the brightest, cleanest imaging possible

Prior Lake, MN (April 17, 2024) – We’ve all been there—either standing at the boat dealer wondering if we should have a professional rigger install all the new fishing electronics we purchased—do it ourselves in the garage—or convince friends to help who might know a lot more about rigging than we do.

No matter what category you fall into, there’s a boat rigging system that reduces labor costs with dealer services or professional riggers, on our own in the shop, or with buddies who’ve rigged more boats than maybe we have. And no more trips to the hardware store to find components they probably don’t have in the first place.

Connect-Ease® GRAPH POWER® kits were designed specifically to reduce hours spent rigging into minutes. The three GRAPH POWER kits available provide systems that work with any 19- to 22-foot console fishing boat; 14- to 18-foot console fishing boat; and tiller fishing boats.

Not only does GRAPH POWER provide hassle-free rigging, the systems were designed to ensure today’s graphs and other fish-finding technologies works exactly as they should, providing the brightest and most crisp imaging possible, especially with the latest in Forward-Facing Sonar. Whether you use Garmin LiveScope, Humminbird MEGA Live and/or MEGA 360, or Lowrance Active Target 1 or 2—or a combination of brands—GRAPH POWER is designed to get optimal performance out of all, maximizing your investment and helping you see your bait and fish better, resulting in a better fishing experience altogether.

Wisconsin-based pro walleye angler and Connect-Ease pro staffer, Brett King, has been fishing tournaments for over 25 years and relies on Connect-Ease GRAPH POWER PRO to ensure his electronics work just as they should during the mission-critical hours and minutes of professional tournaments—and to keep his Lowrance units as bright and crisp as possible from dusk ‘til dawn (with the help of quality lithium batteries, of course).

Connect-Ease Founder, Cal Munkvold, remarks: “I’ve been a big-water angler my entire life, so I knew there had to be a better way to rig electronics for everyone from the weekend warrior to the serious tournament angler. So we sat down and designed the trouble-free solution we would want to buy and install. Along the way, we’ve addressed issues that anglers have had maintaining bright and clear graph imaging,

YANMAR Marine International (YMI) has announced the launch of the YANMAR E-Key system, a cutting-edge solution designed for wireless unlocking of the YANMAR VC20 Vessel Control system, seamlessly integrating with electronically controlled YANMAR Marine engines. This optional feature is poised to offer ease and simplicity for owners worldwide.

The YANMAR E-Key system comprises a sleek, lightweight tag, elegantly designed to sit within users’ personal key sets. Benefiting from a unique ID, this tag communicates wirelessly with the YANMAR Vessel Control System, activating it by simply pressing against the switch panel. Crafted for ease of use, this optional feature elevates boating experiences to new heights, ensuring every journey is as smooth as it is enjoyable.

Floris Lettinga, Director of Sales and Marketing at YANMAR, commented: “We are proud to introduce our new E-Key system, a testament to our commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions. With seamless integration and unparalleled convenience, this offering reaffirms our dedication to enhancing the boating experience for enthusiasts worldwide.”

Compatible with the latest versions of the VC20 Single or Dual Switch Panel, VC20 Helm ECU, and VC20 Display, the YANMAR E-Key system is versatile enough to accommodate multiple engine and station installations. With the capability to connect up to 10 different tags to each installation, users enjoy unparalleled flexibility tailored to their needs.

The VC20 system was completely developed by YANMAR to meet the company’s high standards of quality and dependability. It controls all YANMAR common rail engine and transmission functions and presents engine alarms and diagnostic codes in the display.
