THE MAREX 440 GOURMET CRUISER Marex Boats continues to be a trendsetter in the family boat industry, unveiling its new flagship, the Marex 440. It is a new generation of cruisers with contemporary design lines and several innovations. With a length of 13.70 metres and a maximum beam of 4.27 metres, the Norwegian shipyard continues implementing innovative, practical onboard solutions, focusing on ergonomics, comfort and safety for the whole family.
The Marex 440 Gourmet Cruiser results from the collaboration between the Marex in-house design team and Slovenian studio VOM Creations Yacht Design. Naval architecture was provided by Nikl Design and Engineering by Alpha Creations. The new Marex has two modifications: the 440 Gourmet Cruiser with an enormous U-shaped kitchen layout and the 440 Scandinavia version with a second dining in the enclosed salon. “Our new 440 GC is the natural evolution of a Marex range”, comments Espen Aalrud, CEO of Marex. “The exterior of the Marex 440 has a dynamic and modern look, but we wanted to keep our shipyard DNA very carefully”. “The fundamental idea is to create a family boat focusing on easy living and have the cruise experience of a much larger vessel. The biggest kitchen in its class, beach club next to the water, two bathrooms, and a washer machine are examples of this idea”, - adds Aalrud.
Cockpit
The Marex 440 GC provides clever onboard spaces while creating a relaxed social atmosphere. The cockpit features a huge U-shaped sofa with generous storage under it and a table for up to 8 persons. When the table is folded out, it is possible to accommodate with the second sofa up to 12 people around the table. Also, the table can be lowered, converting this space into a large sunpad or a sleeping bed. The significant highlight is the bar counter, which connects the salon and cockpit into one open social area for guests to enjoy. The Gourmet Cruiser version can optionally get a sliding salon door and an electrically retractable window.
Canopy solution
The Marex 440 GC has the fastest and easiest way to close the open cockpit deck existing in the market. The curtains are hidden in the targa arch and slide around like a curtain. The canopy can be fastened with just ONE single grip. No buttons or rubber bands. From an open cruiser to a closed boat in less than a minute! This solution allows airconditioning (or heating) throughout the deck, making the 440 Gourmet Cruiser suitable for every climate.
Scuttlebutt Southeast // WINTER // January/February 2025
Kitchen
One of the 440 Gourmet Cruiser’s innovations is its kitchen. Marex created a chef’s dream with an enormous U-shaped kitchen layout – the largest in its class. It features an oven/ microwave, double sink, induction cooker and a dishwasher. It also has an opening on the countertop to store four beer/ drink cases of 24 boxes each. The number of drawers and cupboards for kitchen tools and provisions is overwhelming. The 440 Scandinavia version can have an additional dining area with a big sofa and two retractable stools instead of a portside kitchen. The solar panels provide enough capacity to keep the 220-litre refrigerator and 100-litre freezer running permanently without shore power.
Helm and co-pilot seating
The 440’s helm station is fitted with three 12-inch screens that monitor engines, navigation and even the anchoring process, with an additional surveillance camera. The anchoring typically requires a family member to monitor, but the captain can do it alone in this boat. Helm seats are adjustable, allowing plenty of flexibility, thanks to a sliding function. A sofa opposite the helm lets the whole family enjoy the cruising view. A foldable table creates a portable office or breakfast area. The 440 has two side doors. This allows freedom of movement for the captain and passengers, also letting in a fresh breeze. Together with an open sunroof, this increases cruising enjoyment enormously.
Lower deck
The Marex 440 Gourmet Cruiser is available with two, or threecabin layouts. The two-cabin solution has a forward Master Cabin with a large 1,70 x 2,00 m bed and a generous bathroom with a separate shower. The second guest cabin comes with an en-suite bathroom, a 1,80 x 2,00 m bed, a comfortable sofa along the window line, a changing room area at the entrance and can be delivered with a laundry machine (washer/dryer). The three-cabin layout includes a Master Cabin with its bathroom and two twin cabins with shared bathroom/head. Both layouts have many storage solutions, with the forward cabin featuring hanging cabinets and drawers on each side of the 1.70 x 2.00 metre bed, plus additional space under the mattress. Large hull windows and three skylights provide beautiful views and let in plenty of natural light.
Foredeck and swim platform
Marex has brought the beach club idea to the family boats. The platform has a large sitting area for enjoying the closeness to the sea. A hydraulically operated swim platform features optional steps when submerged, making getting in and out of the water safe. That makes 440 a perfect boat for extended family holidays on the water. Marex 440 has a lot of practicality, such as generous storage space for fenders, gas bottles and mooring equipment under the benches at the stern. Also, the platform has an integrated
davits system, which allows one to lift and carry a tender during cruising. The 440’s bow area features a large sunbed with cupholders and “chaise-longue mode” thanks to the lift-up seat back. The waterproof mattress can be unzipped and float on water, serving as a water toy and carrying several people on the water.
Propulsion and technology
The 440 can be equipped with a pair of Volvo Penta engines: 2 x Volvo Penta D6-440HP DPI Sterndrive, 2 x Volvo Penta D6-480HP IPS-650 or 2 x Volvo Penta D6-480HP V-Drive. An optional large generator and gyroscopic stabiliser maximise cruising comfort. The fuel tanks (2 x 595 L), water tank of 780 L, battery capacities (8 x AGM 100 Ah + EXIDE 60Ah for generator) and optional solar panels make a boat perfect for extended family holidays on the water. MAREX BOATS ANNOUNCES NORTH AMERICAN OPERATIONS
Oslo, Norway / Greenwich, CT, December 2024: Marex Boats, a Norwegian boat builder with production facilities in Lithuania, is proud to announce the establishment of operations and sales in North America. The new office is located in Greenwich, Connecticut, and will be led by Christopher Hughes, President of Marex Boats USA, Inc. With over two decades in the luxury yachting industry as a builder, consultant, and sales and marketing strategist for world-famous brands, Chris is a natural fit for this crucial role. With his extensive knowledge of the US boat-building industry and comprehensive understanding of the Norwegian luxury brand, he will oversee all US operations and Marex’s expansion into this new market. “Marex Boats was established as a family production by my father, and after 50 years of constant development, we are ready to bring the Marex brand to the US. Our mission is to build the world’s best family cruisers, and we are committed to solutions that provide a luxurious yet safe and enjoyable feeling for each family member. This is our core value! And those family values are reflected in how we build long-term relationships with our partners and owners. We are excited that Christopher has joined our Marex family to build a trusted and customer-focused team in the US,” says Espen Aalrud, CEO of Marex Boats. Marex has partnered with Sandy Hook Yacht Sales, headquartered in Sea Bright, NJ, and Brewer Yacht Sales, headquartered in Westbrook, CT, to lead the first phase of the entry into the US market. “With multiple offices covering eight states, these partners will allow us to support the customers we
sell to with the highest level of service expected by discerning boaters,” said Hughes. “We spent a lot of time identifying the right partners in the US who are not only the experts in the industry but share a common passion for boat quality, focus on long-lasting relationships, and creating a platform for mutual success,” adds Aalrud. Marex Boats is one of the most awarded boat builders in the world, capturing praise and accolades for ergonomics, innovations, quality, sea handling, and many other categories. The current fleet consists of the 310 Sun Cruiser, considered the “biggest 31-foot yacht,” the 330 Scandinavia, hailed for her performance and use of space, the 360 Cabriolet Cruiser, considered the best-in-class family cruising boat, the 375 Marex, renowned for her fantastic versatile and clever design, and the 440 Gourmet Cruiser, the flagship of the fleet, with the biggest galley in its class and numerous cutting-edge solutions. Among many distinguishing features, every Marex is a unique three-season boat with two sliding sunroofs and the ingenious Smart Enclosure system that allows owners to close off the aft cockpit in less than a minute with no hooks, snaps, or buttons. The enclosure stores neatly in a dedicated hideaway compartment when it’s time to open back up. The first boats will arrive in winter 2025 and be available for onboard visits and sea trials in Florida at the St. Petersburg Boat Show, Naples Boat Show, and Palm Beach Boat Show. Marex is currently accepting dealer inquiries.

AQUILA: POWER CATAMARAN HERITAGE ANCIENT ENGINEERING The recorded history of catamarans goes back to the Austronesian peoples who migrated from Taiwan to the islands of the India and Pacific Oceans circa 3000 to 1500 BCE. Their expansion continued for centuries, stretching from Easter Island to the east, Madagascar to the west, and New Zealand to the south. They may have even reached the west coast of the Americas. Fast forward a few thousand years, and power catamarans have become the fastest-growing segment of the yachting industry, offering diverse sizes and styles for both monohull boaters and catamaran enthusiasts. Power cats have several distinct advantages over mono-hull boats: STABILITY & COMFORT The dual-hull design of catamarans minimizes rolling and pitching motions, resulting in a smoother, safer ride, especially in rough seas. Air pressure between the hulls provide lift and cushioning so catamarans tend to ride over the water more than knife through it. The wide footprint also provides greater stability. SPACE Boats are often categorized by length which can be misleading. Monohull boats taper to a point, which means space on and below deck gets narrower towards the stern. On a catamaran, this space constriction does not happen. The wide beam allows for multiple cabins, spacious lounging areas, and ample storage. To achieve a similar amount of interior space, a monohull typically needs to be about 20% longer to achieve similar ‘size’ in terms of livable space. MANEUVERABILITY Twin hull configuration and shallow draft makes catamarans easier to handle in tight situations, such as docking or navigating channels and inlets. The engines are placed further apart from each other, allowing for easier maneuverability than monohulls. And the shallow draft helps catamarans reach idyllic shallowwater locations monohulls cannot, allowing you to anchor closer to shore. FUEL EFFICIENCY Catamarans experience less water resistance and improved hydrodynamics, reducing fuel consumption. At low to moderate speeds, a lightweight catamaran hull experiences resistance to passage through water that is approximately proportional to its
20
speed. A displacement monohull, by comparison, experiences resistance that is at least the square of its speed. This means that a catamaran would require four times the power to double its speed, whereas a monohull would require eight times the power to double its speed. INSPIRED BY THE ISLANDS. DESIGNED & BUILT BY THE WORLD. Aquila Power Catamarans has more than 40 years of manufacturing experience behind its brand, and more than 100 years of boating experience across both sail and power boats. Aquila’s founding visionary Lex Raas has been sailing since he was four (4) years old, and the leadership team — including two of Lex’s sons — has extensive experience in the industry. Sophisticated tooling and ventilation systems, extensive process and quality controls, substantial use of solar power, and a dedicated workforce of more than 500 employees combine to create the Aquila brand. This international expertise and global perspective combine to make Aquila one of the world leaders in power catamarans. WHAT DOCUMENTS DO BOATERS NEED TO CARRY ONBOARD? By Carolyn Shearlock
Having the right documents onboard can save time and stress, whether you’re checking into a marina, arranging repairs, or interacting with the Coast Guard or local authorities. Keeping these documents organized and easy to access ensures a smoother experience on the water.
ALL-IN-ONE BOAT
DOCUMENTS ORGANIZER
Here’s a list of essential documents every boater should carry: 1. Boat Title and Registration Every boat must have proof of ownership, and for most states, this means carrying the title or a current registration document. If your boat is documented with the U.S. Coast Guard, you’ll need to carry your Certificate of Documentation (COD) instead. Don’t forget your dinghy—most states also require title and registration for it, especially if it’s motorized. 2. Insurance Policies Whether required by marinas or boatyards or simply for peace of mind, having a copy of your boat’s insurance policy onboard is essential. Be sure to include contact information for your insurer in case of an incident.
Boat documents: Secure, organized, instantly accessible
3. Licenses and Certifications Depending on your location, you may need a boater safety card, state-issued boating license, or even a captain’s license if you’re carrying paying passengers. If you’re required to have one, be sure it’s on board in case you’re stopped!
products.theboatgalley.com
32
Scuttlebutt Southeast // WINTER // January/February 2025
4. Hurricane Plan If you’re cruising in hurricane-prone regions, some marinas require a copy of your hurricane plan as part of their dockage agreements. Even if it’s not mandatory, having a copy onboard can be critical for reference during storm preparations. Remember: in case of a storm, your insurance company expects you to follow your plan and may deny coverage if you don’t. 5. Inspection Papers If your boat has passed a Coast Guard (or Auxiliary) inspection in the past year, keep the report onboard. Presenting this document during a stop can prevent additional inspections, saving you time and hassle.
By staying organized, you’ll not only simplify your boat life but also boat with confidence, knowing you’re prepared for anything that comes your way. About the Author Carolyn Shearlock and her team at The Boat Galley are all longtime boaters, dedicated to making boat life simpler, easier, and just plain better. Their handy guides and organizers are available at products.theboatgalley.com and on Amazon.
Stay Organized and Prepared Keeping all your essential documents in one place helps you stay prepared for any situation. Using a sturdy organizer protects your paperwork from damage and makes retrieval easy when you need it most. While an envelope or binder might work in a pinch, a dedicated accordion folder with labeled tabs keeps everything neatly arranged and accessible. For thicker stacks of paperwork, consider the The Boat Galley’s Boat Documents Organizer. It holds over 400 pages, features clearly labeled compartments, and comes with a checklist of must-have documents to ensure you’re always ready.

KROPF INDUSTRIAL DELIVERS FIRST ALLELECTRIC TRAVEL LIFT Kropf Industrial, manufacturer of the industry-leading Conolift line of boat handling equipment, is excited to announce that its first all-electric travel lift is now in service at a Yacht Club in Ontario. The advanced design has eliminated both the diesel power unit and the hydraulic system, yielding a simplified machine that is quiet, and free from emissions and the risk of spills. A first for North America, this all-electric lift with a capacity of 40 tons has already been through a rigorous testing program at Kropf’s facility. It is now being utilized by a Toronto-area marine facility for their haulout and launch operations, providing opportunities for final refinements and demonstrating the performance of the unit in a range of conditions. To date, the lift has exceeded expectations for ease of use, reliability, battery life, and low charging times. The all-electric design of this lift has completely eliminated both the internal-combustion engine, and the hydraulic system, which eliminates both emissions and the need for fluids and oils. Reliable, proven technologies were utilized throughout the design, ensuring safe, long-term operations and ease of maintenance and service. The low-voltage battery packs are safe, proven, and easy to maintain. The lift is a fully-featured machine with all of the options available on a diesel-powered unit, including proportional controls, two-speed winches, sling positioners, and fully radio-remote operation. Diagnostics, machine status updates, and service are simplified through use of a large external touchscreen, and the machine can be remotely diagnosed and serviced through connection to a wifi network. The advanced all-electric design is paired with Conolift’s proven fabrication methods, robust design, and high-quality finishes. The machine offers quiet and safe operation without emissions, without the risk of spills, and with lower service requirements than a traditional diesel/hydraulic unit. BEYOND THE WAVES:
How boating shapes our character, community, and careers by Kathryn Bakinowski, sterling associates The southeast coast of Florida is a region lined with beautiful beaches and waterways. It is almost impossible to escape the calming sea breeze. The warm sun sparkles on the water yearround. In a land with a seemingly endless summer, boaters have found paradise. The impact boating has on us goes well beyond the joy we feel during a recreational weekend trip to a crystalclear sandbar. So how has boating moved beyond the waves and impacted our characters, communities, and careers? Boating Builds character: Life lessons from the water “Sorry for what I said while I was docking,” is a phrase well known by boaters, whether they like to admit it or not. There are few things more enjoyable than a calm day on the water, but boaters know better than anyone that unpredictable water conditions can turn a perfect day into a learning lesson in the blink of an eye. It only makes sense that an activity that evokes such strong emotions from us shapes our character as individuals. You might not realize it while you’re cruising into the sunset, but boating teaches us responsibility, resilience, teamwork, and selflessness. Captaining a boat means taking your safety, and the safety of your passengers, into consideration. Growing up in Stuart, Florida, boating was a large part of my upbringing. I can remember attempting to dock my 15-foot Boston Whaler Montauk at the local boat ramp with my dad watching over my shoulder. “Only approach the dock as fast as you want to hit it,” he would say, as the 17-knot wind and outgoing current worked together to blow me past the slip, forcing me to circle around for the 6th time. I vividly remember my frustration. I wanted to give up, but I knew that it was my responsibility to get myself and the boat safely home. In
this moment I learned resilience. It may have taken 7 tries, but finally docking the boat taught me how to work through difficult circumstances. I did not know it at the time, but the lesson that I learned on the deck of my childhood boat would stick with me for years to come. A captain is nothing without his first mate. Whether your one person on a six-person sailing team trying to get from point A to point B, or throwing your lines to a stranger on a dock; boating isn’t always a one-man job. Learning to work with others to accomplish a common goal is an essential lesson in boating and in life. If you think collaborating on a work project over zoom is difficult, try going to Miami’s Haulover sandbar on a Sunday afternoon. You will quickly learn how valuable teamwork is, and how quickly boating can cultivate this skill. Spending time on the water teaches people selflessness. It forces us to appreciate something bigger than ourselves. On the boat the elements encompass you. From the open sky above to the abyss below. Self-importance seems to melt away as we enjoy being at the mercy of the elements. The vastness and beauty of the ocean puts our place in the world into perspective. As you run your boat, dolphins effortlessly breach in your wake swimming at a speed that humans could only dream of. Florida’s waterways are a resource that we all enjoy, and it is all our responsibility to protect this resource. Boaters understand this better than anyone. For decades boaters have been inspired to selflessly donate their time to conservation efforts. Cont'd on page 36

// F E A T U R E // Bridging the gap: How boating helps us build stronger communities Finding common ground can be hard, but finding common deck might not be as difficult as you think. Boating can be used as a tool for different generations to connect. This beloved pastime also creates long lasting traditions that become staples within communities.
The best part about being a boater with a career in the marine industry is that you get to wake up every day and work in a field that you are passionate about. At Sterling Associates I help customers through the process of taking out a boat loan so they can get the keys to their dream vessel and get on the water quickly and easily. My story is just one example of how a love for boating can go beyond recreation and impact our lives and careers.
Boating helps people from all different walks of life bond over their shared passion. A day on the water gives us the opportunity to “hang up and hangout” with our family and friends. Without technology distracting we can truly tune into conversations with those around us and connect on a deeper level. Passing boating knowledge down to the next generation is a great way for families to bond while also instilling a passion that will last a lifetime and create lots of joy throughout the years.
My boating experience recently came full circle when I helped a customer receive funding for their 17-foot Boston Whaler Montauk. Upon closing fondly remembered the boat I grew up with. I took a moment to reflect on all the ways boating has impacted my life beyond the enjoyment I get from the occasional recreational weekend trip to a crystal-clear sandbar. Boating has built my character, strengthened my community, and even helped guide my career. If you take a minute to reflect on your boating experience, I have a feeling you will also find that the impact this hobby has made on your life runs deeper than the surface.
Boating bonds more than just individuals, it strengthens whole communities. Every year dozens of boats covered bow to stern in twinkling lights line up to parade through the canals of Stuart, Florida. Passing restaurants filled with waving onlookers, these boats are participating in a beloved community tradition. The joy spread by this event extends beyond the confines of a fiberglass deck. Community members big and small, young and old, salty and green all come together for this event. Whether attendees participate from the water or dry land, the whole community shares in the holiday spirit. The Christmas boat parade in Stuart, Florida is the perfect example of how doing what we love as boaters brings us together with who we love to celebrate as a community. Careers on the Horizon: The business of boating They say, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” No one lives up to this life motto better than boaters. The size of the marine industry in Florida is daunting. From boat brokers to documentation companies, to engine servicers, to naval architects, to surveyors, to storage facilities, boating has a massive economic footprint in Florida. The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) reports that Florida’s marine industry has an annual economic impact of over $31 billion dollars across around 7,000 businesses that employ approximately 109,000 people (1). As an avid boater I found a passion for the marine industry at a young age. I knew I wanted to incorporate this passion into my career in some way. I quickly realized that the scope of jobs that the boating industry encompasses is vast. At the University of Florida, I fostered an interest in business, specifically sales and finance. Upon graduation I went to work for a marine lending company called Sterling Associates. As a sales representative with Sterling Associates, I consider myself incredibly lucky to be a part on the Florida marine industry. Although a day in the office might not be quite as relaxing as a glassy day on the water, helping customers get into their dream boats makes me feel like I’ve never worked a day in my life.

DiTEC Marine Products has been a leader in the marine industry for over 20 years. This alone saves time when it comes to cleaning your boat, something that the developers at DiTEC fully understand. REGULATOR 30 XO UPGRADES FOR 2025 by Jeff Dennis “New for 2025 we are offering Garmin trolling motors, for a seamless interface with the Garmin technology that comes standard at the helm,” said Halford. “Other inshore accessories for the 30 XO include a twin Power Pole option for anchoring quickly in shallow water, and optional jack plates for each engine. There is a boarding ladder mounted aft that makes it easy to get in and out of the water if desired. Also new for 2025 is the Sandbar upholstery for the helm station, adding tan to our lineup of color options.”
I joined Regulator for an in-water demo of the 30 XO at St. John’s Yacht Harbor in Charleston, managed by Stan Jones. Drew Halford is the Mid-Atlantic Sales Manager for Regulator Marine and he showed me the features found on the 30 XO before we left the dock for a boat ride. The version we tested had twin Yamaha 300 engines, which can provide a cruising speed of 33 mph and a top speed of 56, which is great when heading offshore to go fishing. The length of the 30 XO is 30-feet 7-inches and the beam is 10-feet two-inches, with a 222-gallon fuel capacity.
“When it comes to power, new for 2025 we are offering motor upgrades to 350 engines,” said Halford. “Also new for 2025 are the latest gyro stabilization technology and trim tabs from Seakeeper. There is a head located in the console, and that area also offers access to the helm electronics. In the aft there are three fold-down forwardfacings seats, and the center seat folds up to offer access to the bilge controls. The 30 XO has a good reputation with boat dealers and customers for lots of access regarding any maintenance. A livewell and several insulated boxes are all LED-lit and drain overboard.”
“The 30 XO is the biggest, baddest hybrid out there on the water,” said Halford. “The beam makes this boat feel spacious even when underway offshore, and all Regulator boats come with a fishingcentric design. But things like the seating area in front that can accommodate lots of folks, is very family friendly when staying inshore. The technology on the 30XO is top-tier with twin Garmin displays in the helm, digital control screens, joystick controls and simple push button controls too. The T-top over the console comes with ten rocket launchers on the backside, and a moonroof and half-tower station is an option for diehard anglers who value sightfishing.”
“The tackle center behind the helm seats comes with a washdown hose, and multiple tackle drawers,” said Halford. “But the design to store a cutting board in the bottom drawer when not in use, allows this station to double for recreational use. The cutting board locks into the top of the tackle center securely to provide a solid surface when cutting bait. Under the gunnel rod storage keeps fishing tackle out of sight and additional rod holders are available along the gunnels. The 30 XO is extremely versatile and is the swiss army knife of the Regulator Line.”

After building two hybrid XO boats in the 20-foot range, Regulator Marine debuted the 30 XO in 2024 as a step up in size and accessories. Regulator boats are known for saltwater fishability and the XO series delivers a crossover platform that can accommodate any fishing plans, but also a day at the local sandbar with family and friends. New for 2025 are some exciting upgrades for the 30 XO including Seakeeper features, Garmin tech upgrades, a new upholstery color choice and an increase in engine power.

ARE YOU DEEP ENOUGH?
THIS IS NOT A JUDGMENT ON YOU, JUST YOUR DOCK OR SLIP! All vessels require a certain amount of water to float and avoid touching the bottom; the larger the boat, the greater the draft. When considering or completing the purchase of a new boat, one of the most important factors to examine is the draft. Does your current slip or dock provide the necessary depth clearance for you to maneuver in and out easily? If you are upgrading to a larger boat, you may need to increase the size of your slip or dock and ensure adequate depth. Over time, tidal movements can lead to sediment buildup, which decreases water depth—resulting in too much mud! Proper depth is essential for safely navigating in and out of your slip or dock, which may indicate that it’s time to dredge. If you are part of a boating community, your homeowners' association (HOA) will typically dredge the main channel for safe entrance and exit. However, maintaining depth at your slip or dock often falls on you. How do I know if I need to dredge? You must have at least three to six feet of water below your boat at low tide. If this is not the case, damage can occur to your hull or propeller(s). The last thing you want is your new boat sitting in mud at low tide. What does dredging involve? The area to be dredged is SOUNDED. This involves using a depth finder or sounding rod to determine the depth, which can vary within a relatively small area. The fee to sound an area is typically $1000 and should be waived if you contract to dredge. Next, an estimate is provided for the amount to be removed.
How much will this cost? You can expect dredging to cost anywhere from $35 to $65 per cubic yard. The volume of the silt and the type of dredging and equipment used will also determine the costs. For most docks and slips, at least 100 cubic yards of sediment or silt should be removed to impact depth significantly.
54
Scuttlebutt Southeast // WINTER // January/February 2025
What needs to happen before work can begin? Once the contract is signed, your project's Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) permit must be obtained. According to the State of North Carolina, these are the following conditions for projects requiring permits: - in one of the 20 counties covered by CAMA. - considered "development" under CAMA. - in or affecting an Area of Environmental Concern (AEC) - doesn't qualify for an exemption. A Minor or General application can be filled out for maintenance dredging of channels, canals, boat basins, and ditches in estuarine waters, public trust areas and estuarine shorelines, as long as the maintenance doesn't remove more than 1,000 cubic yards of material. The permit cost will be about $100 to $400, depending on specific conditions and scope of work.* How often must I dredge? Dredging might be required once every few years to maintain your slip or dock to avoid sediment (mud) building up and the problems it causes. Occasionally, the dredging might need to be done several times a year. Dredging is vital for maintaining navigable waterways, but it can disrupt ecosystems or cause other unintended harm if done improperly. Using a licensed and insured Marine Contractor is essential to ensure the safety of the ecosystem, your dock, seawall, or surrounding land. You should expect your contractor to understand and comply with all permits and laws and carry proper insurance. * source: NC State CAMA Handbook for Coastal Development, 2014: complete information and contacts can be found at files. nc.gov. SIX TIPS
FOR BETTER ICE RETENTION What good is a cooler if it doesn't keep your drinks cold on those hot summer days?
1. Start Cold to Stay Cold The colder your cooler starts, the longer it will retain ice and keep the contents cold. If possible, store your cooler in a cold place hours before you plan to use it. Also, consider precooling the interior of your cooler by filling it with a bag of ice the night before you plan to use it. 2. Air Is The Enemy Large air pockets within your cooler will only accelerate the rate at which the ice will melt. Reduce air space by adding ice or using a towel to fill the space. 3. Keep Openings To A Minimum Every time you open your cooler, you let cold air out and warm air in, which will cause the ice to melt faster. Try to minimize how often you open the cooler. 4. Avoid Direct Sunlight Do your best to keep your cooler out of direct sunlight. If there is no shade available, consider covering the cooler with a blanket or towel. 5. Don't Drain The Water Once your ice begins to melt, the remaining water will be very cold and will help to keep the contents chilled. However, food such as meat can and will grow bacteria if it becomes wet. Be sure to keep food safety in mind when using your cooler. Use your Snack Rack to keep your dry goods... dry!. 6. Use Cold Ice It sounds silly, but trust us, not all ice is created equal. Cube and shaved ice melt quickly while block ice or dry ice will last longer. Also, buy ice that is obviously cold (hard and dry) as opposed to warm ice which will be wet and won't last as long.

Spring Into Action:
Essential Boat Prep for the Upcoming Season by AAA - The Auto Club Group
As winter fades and the days grow longer, boaters everywhere eagerly anticipate the arrival of spring. This season brings the promise of new adventures on the water, but before setting sail, it's crucial to ensure your boat is in tip-top shape. Proper preparation not only enhances your boating experience but also ensures safety and longevity for your vessel. Here are some essential steps to get your boat ready for the spring season. Inspect and Clean Your Boat Start with a thorough inspection of your boat. Look for any signs of damage, wear, or corrosion. Pay special attention to the hull, deck, and fittings. Clean the exterior and interior of your boat, removing any accumulated dirt, grime, and salt residues. A clean boat not only looks great but also makes it easier to spot potential issues. Check the Engine, Hull, and Propeller Your boat's engine is its heart, and proper maintenance is crucial. Check the oil and fuel levels, and replace any old fuel with fresh, stabilized fuel. Inspect the fuel lines, filters, and pumps for any signs of wear or leaks. Change the oil and oil filter, and make sure the cooling system is functioning correctly. Regular engine maintenance can prevent breakdowns and extend the life of your boat. Inspect the hull for any cracks, blisters, or other damage that might have occurred during the winter. Repair any issues promptly to prevent further damage. Also, inspect the propeller for any dents or bends. A damaged propeller can affect your boat's performance and fuel efficiency. Battery Care and Maintenance Marine batteries are vital for powering your boat's electronics and starting the engine. Over the winter, batteries can lose their charge or develop issues. Test your batteries to ensure they are holding a charge. Clean the battery terminals and connections if needed. If your battery is a few years old, consider replacing it to avoid unexpected failures on the water. You trust AAA on the road with your car batteries. Did you know you can trust us on the water too? AAA Marine/RV Batteries continue the AAA commitment to quality products and dependable service. Whether you're a weekend warrior or a full-time boater, rely on AAA for all your marine/RV battery needs. For more tips on marine battery care and to find the battery for your boat, visit www.acg.aaa.com/automotive/ marine-battery.html Inspect Safety Equipment Safety should always be a priority. Check all your safety equipment, including life jackets, flares, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits. Ensure everything is in good condition and within the expiration dates. Test your navigation lights and other electronic devices to ensure they work correctly. Update Documentation and Licenses Ensure that your boat's registration, insurance, and any necessary permits are current. Having all your documentation in order helps avoid any legal issues and ensures a smooth boating experience. By following these essential steps, you'll be well-prepared for a safe and enjoyable spring boating season. Regular maintenance and inspections not only protect your investment but also contribute to a more pleasurable and worry-free time on the water. Happy boating!
