When we decided to build our HCO line of hybrid boats in 2013, we had one simple goal: Design a great fishing boat the family will enjoy. That meant style and comfort were just as important as fishing necessities. So, we asked boat owners what they wanted in a hybrid boat, and then we designed the Crevalle HCO series to deliver on that expectation.

The Crevalle 26 HCO takes hybrid boats to another level. It truly fits all aspects of boating making this one of the few boats that can do everything you want. For the inshore and offshore fisherman, this boat will allow you to run in 12-14 inches of water while having a dry deep V style ride. This 26 foot center console boat performs flawlessly whether it’s on the river, lake, inshore or offshore fishing trips.

We keep the family in mind by including:

• custom fiberglass leaning post w/backrest

• two removable coolers

• forward seating package with removable/reversible backrest

And, when it comes to fishing, we added features you wanted most:

• two aft 28 gallon bait/release wells

• one forward 12 gallon bait well

• lockable forward port/starboard rod storage for 10 rods or 5

• rods starboard side and a portside fishbox

• dedicated anchor storage

• in-deck, cast-net storage

AQUILA: POWER CATAMARAN HERITAGE

ANCIENT ENGINEERING

The recorded history of catamarans goes back to the Austronesian peoples who migrated from Taiwan to the islands of the India and Pacific Oceans circa 3000 to 1500 BCE. Their expansion continued for centuries, stretching from Easter Island to the east, Madagascar to the west, and New Zealand to the south. They may have even reached the west coast of the Americas.

Fast forward a few thousand years, and power catamarans have become the fastest-growing segment of the yachting industry, offering diverse sizes and styles for both monohull boaters and catamaran enthusiasts.

Power cats have several distinct advantages over mono-hull boats:

STABILITY & COMFORT

The dual-hull design of catamarans minimizes rolling and pitching motions, resulting in a smoother, safer ride, especially in rough seas. Air pressure between the hulls provide lift and cushioning so catamarans tend to ride over the water more than knife through it. The wide footprint also provides greater stability.

SPACE

Boats are often categorized by length which can be misleading. Monohull boats taper to a point, which means space on and below deck gets narrower towards the bow. On a catamaran, this space constriction does not happen. The wide beam allows for multiple cabins, spacious lounging areas, and ample storage. To achieve a similar amount of interior space, a monohull typically needs to be about 20% longer to achieve similar ‘size’ in terms of livable space.

MANEUVERABILITY

Twin hull configuration and shallow draft makes catamarans easier to handle in tight situations, such as docking or navigating channels and inlets. The engines are placed further apart from each other, allowing for easier maneuverability than monohulls. And the shallow draft helps catamarans reach idyllic shallowwater locations monohulls cannot, allowing you to anchor closer to shore.

FUEL EFFICIENCY

Catamarans experience less water resistance and improved hydrodynamics, reducing fuel consumption. The twin hulls allow the boat to glide more easily through the water. Displacement

(how much of the boat is submerged) also plays a role. A catamaran with a shallow draft and a more optimized hull design will generally be more fuel-efficient than one with a deeper draft.

THIS CAT CAN FISH

Designed for avid anglers who demand performance and style, the Aquila 47 Molokai combines real offshore fishing chops with a spacious, air-conditioned stateroom and en-suite head and shower.

Powered by twin 600 hp or quad 400 hp Mercury Verado outboards, the Aquila 47 Molokai delivers thrilling performance and a smooth ride, thanks to her twin-step hull design and strong, lightweight vacuum-infused construction. Joystick piloting makes close-quarters maneuvering a breeze, while a 1,048-gallon (3,967 Liter) fuel capacity brings any horizon within reach.

Underway, seven protected helm seats in two air-conditioned rows keep your crew safe and comfortable, while state-of-the-art Raymarine electronics, C-Zone digital switching and a custom-tuned Fusion audio system put information and entertainment at your fingertips.

Pressurized livewells fed by a Hooker sea chest keep your bait lively, while cavernous fish boxes accommodate the largest fish and longest trips. Electric reel outlets provide power for deep-dropping, and the carbon fiber hardtop is factory reinforced for outriggers and custom towers.

When you aren’t fishing or diving, break out the water toys for more fun with friends and family. Or just relax onboard while visiting a favorite dockside restaurant, sand bar, or island. This cat can fish alright... and then some.

Where will you go with your Aquila 47 Molokai?

NEW BOAT CHECKLIST

Getting a new (or new-to-you) boat is exciting! But before you dive into the fun, let’s make sure you’ve covered all the essentials. Whether it’s brand-new or previously loved, there are a few key legal and practical steps to handle before hitting the water. Use this checklist to get your boat ready for its first adventure!

1. Title

At closing, make sure the seller has signed the title over to you. For U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) documented boats, ensure you have the proper forms. Submit everything to the appropriate office to have the title or documentation issued in your name. Until the paperwork is finalized, keep a copy of the bill of sale onboard. If the boat includes a dinghy or trailer, transfer their titles too. Most states require titles for motorized dinghies and trailers.

2. State Registration

State registration laws vary, but most states require boats used within their borders for a certain number of days to be registered there, even if titled or documented elsewhere. This often applies to dinghies and trailers as well.

3.

Sales Tax

If you didn’t pay sales tax at purchase, you’ll likely owe it when registering the boat. Some states provide credit for tax paid in another state, but timing matters. Research the tax requirements of the state where you’ll register the boat, as sales tax can significantly increase the overall cost.

4. Insurance

Once the sale closes, the risk of loss shifts to you. Arrange insurance ahead of time to ensure coverage starts immediately. Speak with an insurance broker about any requirements, such as a recent survey, and understand what you need to do to secure coverage.

5. Towing Insurance

Towing insurance is invaluable in case of breakdowns or running aground. BoatUS and SeaTow are popular providers, but coverage quality can vary by region. Talk to local boaters to see which service works best in your area.

6. Where to Keep Your Boat

Decide where your boat will be stored or moored. Whether it’s a slip, a mooring, or dry storage, secure a spot before the sale closes. Availability can be tight in popular boating areas, so plan ahead.

7. Life Jackets and Throwables

Make sure you have enough life jackets for everyone on board, including basic ones for the dinghy, and a throwable device on deck. Consider more comfortable or specialized life jackets over time, but basic compliance is key initially.

8. Fire Extinguishers

Ensure you have enough fire extinguishers on board and that they’re in working order (gauges in the green zone or within their certification period). Fire blankets are also great for handling small fires with minimal mess.

9. Flares

Verify you have the required U.S. Coast Guard-approved flares for your boat. Electronic flares, like Sirius Signal models, are a fantastic option as they don’t expire or require you to handle burning materials.

10. Keys

Don’t forget to get all the keys from the previous owner, including those for the engine, storage areas, padlocks, and companionway. Make a checklist ahead of time to avoid overlooking any locks or access points.

11. Final Preparations

While this checklist covers the essentials, don’t forget about navigation tools before heading out. Invest in updated charts, a reliable navigation program, and cruising guides for your planned routes. If you're cruising the ICW, we highly recommend Aqua Map for navigation and our ICW Quick Reference Cruising Guide to simplify bridge openings, anchorages, and other critical details.

By addressing these key areas, you’ll be ready to hit the water with confidence and enjoy your new boat to the fullest!

Spring Adventure is Calling, Captain!

With the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Cape Fear River to the west, a variety of intracoastal waterways and passageslike Bradley Creek in Wilmington and Snow’s Cut in Carolina Beach - it’s no surprise Wilmington and its Island Beaches were recently ranked #3 on BoatBooker.com’s 2025 list of “Best Boating Cities in the U.S.”

From dining waterside to garden parties and food festivals, it’s easy to embrace spring as you traverse from water to land, conveniently docking at one of the many marinas in Carolina Beach, Wrightsville Beach or Wilmington.

Photos from VisitNC.com

Dock and Dine

Mooring then dining al fresco is a quintessential experience in Wilmington and its Island Beaches. Downtown Wilmington is home to a number of riverfront restaurants where you can easily dock and dine, including River 128 Restaurant, The Pilot House, Elijah’s Oyster & Fish Camp, and Anne Bonny’s Bar and Grill. Next to Port City Marina, Marina Grill serves American fare and Tequila’s Waterfront offers a variety of elevated Mexican cuisine with a rivaled selection of tequila. Even if not traversing by boat, a seafood tower at Seabird is a must, or unique, artful cocktails at AAA Four Diamond, Manna Ave. 123.

Want to taste everything Wilmington has to offer? FEAST Wilmington, March 24-30, offers three signature food events at Riverfront Park along the Cape Fear River: Craft + Cuisine, Brunch Elevated, and a Pier Party.

In Wrightsville Beach, cruise up to The Bridge Tender or keep it casual at Dockside, enjoying a cold beverage and peel-andeat shrimp from the double deck as you watch boats glide up and down the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.

Near the Carolina Beach Municipal Docks, a number of restaurants including Stoked Restaurant, Havana’s and SeaWitch Café & Tiki Bar offer a laid-back experience. Want to stay on the water? The BARge CB (you guessed it, a floating barge) offers drinks and live music.

Gardens, Parties & Festivals

The North Carolina Azalea Festival, April 2- 6, is a signifier that spring has sprung in Wilmington, with a weekend of packed events including a street fair, parades and concerts from Justin Moore and Flo Rida.

For the history (and garden) buff, the Cape Fear Garden Club’s Azalea Garden Tour allows you to experience the gorgeous gardens of historic Wilmington homes including Kenan House and the Wise Alumni House, as well as the 67-acre Airlie Gardens abloom with hundreds of heritage plants and thousands of azaleas.

From water to land, in Carolina Beach State Park the 0.4-mile loop Flytrap Trail gives a glimpse of the native, carnivorous Venus Flytrap in its natural habitat, you can also experience this in Wilmington at Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden. Nature lovers can also embrace the magic of spring blooms at the New Hanover County Arboretum or Wrightsville Beach’s Harbor Way Gardens.

Historic Downtown Wilmington

From Revolutionary War history to iconic film sites, a number of guided tours lets you see firsthand how pivotal Wilmington is as both a monument to the past and the backdrop of your favorite movies and TV shows.

Film buffs can see locations from Blue Velvet, Dawson’s Creek, The Crow and more on the Wilmywood Movie & TV Location Walk. Prefer scary history over scary movies? The Ghost Walk of Old Wilmington reinterprets Wilmington’s storied past into spooky legends, it’s also a unique activity for a cool spring evening.

If you’d rather experience history during the day, there’s a number of guided tours via foot or horse drawn carriage. Make sure to visit the Bellamy Mansion Museum of History and Design Arts (c. 1861) Burgwin-Wright House Museum (c. 1770) and the Battleship North Carolina – three of Wilmington’s most iconic attractions.

Sun & Sand Island Beaches

Even if you spend your days on the water, it’s still nice to dock or soak in the sun from the sandy shore of one of three island beaches.

While exploring Wrightsville Beach, walk to the North End to leave a letter in the storied Wrightsville Beach Mailbox.

In Carolina Beach, a bicycle ride around town allows you to experience 20 murals by North Carolina artists. Come April, make sure to stop by the Boardwalk to grab a delicious Britt’s Donut.

In Kure Beach, Fort Fisher State Historic Site - the site of the Civil War’s largest land and water battle - showcases earthworks and a new visitor center with museum exhibits.

See You this Spring—And Fall

Although there’s no better time than spring to plan your visit, the Wilmington Boat Show, October 10-12, is a perfect excuse to visit again in the fall. To plan your itinerary, visit WilmingtonAndBeaches.com

7 Coastal Lighthouses to Explore in North Carolina

Bodie Island Lighthouse Nags Head

Currituck Beach Lighthouse

Corolla

Currituck Beach Light Station on the northern Outer Banks has protected North Carolina's shores since 1875. Made of roughly 1 million red bricks, this active lighthouse’s exterior differs from a more common black-and-white color scheme to the south.

Climb it: mid-March through December

Continuing southbound on NC Highway 12 through Kitty Hawk and Nags Head, you'll reach Cape Hatteras National Seashore. At the entrance of this protected area is Bodie Island Lighthouse (pronounced “body”). Today’s structure is the third lighthouse to stand on this site, and you can take the 214-step trip to the top.

Climb it: mid-April through mid-October

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Buxton

Moving farther south through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, you'll come to Buxton, home of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. As the nation’s tallest and most recognizable lighthouse, it's commonly referred to as “America’s Lighthouse” and was completed in 1870.

Please note: The lighthouse is currently closed for climbing due to ongoing restoration efforts.

Cape Lookout Lighthouse

Harkers Island

Ocracoke Lighthouse

Ocracoke

To reach the oldest still-operating lighthouse in North Carolina, you can take a free ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke Island. The whitewashed lighthouse is the nation’s second oldest still-active facility. The village is steeped in history, only accessible by water or air and was once a safe haven for the infamous pirate Blackbeard.

The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is most recognized for its large black-and-white diamond design. Originally rejected by 19th-century mariners, the structure was later used as the model for future Outer Banks lighthouses. It's the southernmost lighthouse on the Crystal Coast along the Outer Banks and is only accessible by private boat or ferry. Though the lighthouse is undergoing extensive renovations through 2025 and is currently closed to climbers, you can still admire it from the base.

Old Baldy Lighthouse

Bald Head Island

Oak Island Lighthouse

Caswell Beach

If you travel south of the Outer Banks to the Brunswick Islands beaches, you can cross onto Oak Island to see the Oak Island Lighthouse. With a light that can be seen for 16 miles, this lighthouse is one of the world’s most powerful. The area is open to the public, but it's best to call ahead to arrange your 131-step ascent up a series of ships ladders to the gallery level.

Climb it: all year on select days by appointment

North Carolina's southernmost lighthouse is visible from Oak Island. Return to the mainland and head to Southport where you can take the ferry to Bald Head Island. Similar to Ocracoke, Bald Head is only accessible by water or air. Old Baldy’s appearance is a result of decades of patchwork repair and its 200-plus years of existence. Climb to the top of its 108 steps to take in the view and explore the restored keeper’s cottage on the property.

The Lighthouses of South Carolina

The historic lighthouses of South Carolina come in different shapes, colors and sizes. Running from North to South, they are located in Georgetown, on Sullivan’s Island, right off Folly Beach and at Hunting Island near Beaufort. Only two of them are still in operation, and are now solar-powered. Each of these S.C. gems is a notch on the belt for those who love the sight of a lighthouse keeping quiet watch over a coastline.

Georgetown Lighthouse

The Georgetown Lighthouse is the oldest continuous operating light in the state, going back to 1811. While the state of South Carolina owns the lighthouse and the land it sits on, the U.S. Coast Guard operates and maintains the light, which runs off solar panels. The lighthouse is on North Island which is a

complex of barrier islands known as the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center, administered by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. A swing-bridge from the mainland to South Island, directly across the Winyah Bay channel from North Island, allows public tours, but there is no public access to North Island or the Georgetown lighthouse.

Charleston Light

The Sullivan’s Island lighthouse, also known as the Charleston light, is maintained by the National Park Service, which also maintains nearby Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter. The lighthouse is still operating under the direction of the U.S. Coast Guard. A more modern lighthouse, built in 1962, features both an elevator and air-conditioning. It features a unique triangular design and is 140-feet tall, with

a stark black and white design that is a favorite of visiting photographers, but there is no public access. The lighthouse was automated in 1975, eliminating the need for a lighthouse keeper.

Morris Island Lighthouse

The Morris Island lighthouse is by far the most precarious of the remaining lighthouses in S.C. since it now resides in the ocean, but within sight of land, after decades of erosion have chewed away at the shore. A non-profit group of citizens called Save The Light came together in 1999 to ensure that the lighthouse had a fighting chance to survive. Their fundraising efforts and funds from the S.C. state legislature have gone towards projects such as building a coffer dam around the base of the structure to counter abrasion from wave action. While

the light was first lit in 1876, Dominion Energy has now installed solar cells that are only used for special occasions to briefly power the light. The public can view the lighthouse from the beach of the Lighthouse Inlet county park, which used to be a Coast Guard base.

Hunting Island Lighthouse

The Hunting Island Lighthouse is a part of the S.C. State Parks system as of 1940, and is open to the public visiting Hunting Island State Park. Originally constructed in 1859, it was rebuilt in 1875 after being destroyed in the Civil War. A unique feature of the lighthouse is that it was constructed of interchangeable castiron sections so it could be dismantled should it ever need to be moved, and in 1889 the lighthouse was moved 1.3-miles inland due to erosion. It is over 130-feet tall and has an 167-step spiral staircase to the top for the adventurer looking for the best possible view of the beach and the Atlantic Ocean.

BEACONS OF THE GEORGIA COAST: A BOATER’S GUIDE TO THE STATE’S HISTORIC LIGHTHOUSES

Stretching across Georgia’s 100-mile coastline, five surviving lighthouses stand as timeless sentinels, their light cutting through sea mist and storied history alike. For boaters, these beacons have long served as trusted guides, marking treacherous channels, shifting sandbars, and deep-water ports. Today, they remain not only vital navigation aids but also living monuments to the region’s maritime heritage.

Tybee Island Lighthouse

At the mouth of the Savannah River, the Tybee Island Lighthouse has stood in various forms since 1736, making it Georgia’s oldest and tallest beacon at 145 feet. Its current structure, completed in 1867, incorporates the surviving base of the 1773 lighthouse—an unshakable foundation built of brick. Mariners once relied on the brilliance of its second-order Fresnel lens, which casts light 18 miles out to sea, a crucial guide for those threading their way toward the Port of Savannah.

For boaters, Tybee remains a crucial point of reference. Its range light system—originally installed in 1822—helped sailors align their approach to the river channel. Today, visitors can ascend its 178 steps for panoramic coastline views, while its original keeper’s cottages and museum offer a glimpse into centuries of maritime tradition.

St. Simons Island Light

Standing at 104 feet, the St. Simons Island Lighthouse has seen its share of upheaval. Built in 1810, it was razed by retreating Confederate forces in 1862 to prevent its use by Union troops. Rebuilt in 1872, the current tower—designed by Irish architect Charles Cluskey—features a third-order Fresnel lens that continues to flash steady signals across St. Simons Sound. Beyond its role as a navigational aid, the lighthouse anchors a rich maritime legacy. The former keeper’s house now encases the Lighthouse Museum, where visitors can trace the stories of those who once kept the flame burning. The nearby A.W. Jones Heritage Center expands the narrative, with archives, a research library, and rotating exhibits.

Sapelo Island Light

Tucked away on the remote shores of Sapelo Island, this 100-foot-tall lighthouse is the second-oldest brick tower in the U.S., first illuminated in 1820. Retreating Confederate troops abandoned the station in 1862, but the lighthouse was restored and reactivated in 1868, its fourth-order Fresnel lens beaming across the sound.

Deactivated in 1934, Sapelo’s station saw a renaissance in 1998 with a full restoration, including its signature red-and-white striped exterior. Accessible only by a 30-minute ferry ride, it remains a rare treasure for those seeking history and seclusion. Tours, operated by Georgia State Parks, provide a closer look at this enduring sentinel.

Cockspur Island Light

Perched on a marshy outcrop near Fort Pulaski, Cockspur Island Light may be Georgia’s smallest at 46 feet, but its presence is significant. Built in 1857 and largely undamaged during the Civil War, the tower marks the entrance to the south channel of the Savannah River. Though decommissioned in 1909, it remains preserved within Fort Pulaski National Monument, visible from the park’s scenic overlook trail.

Little Cumberland Island Light

Few lighthouses in Georgia are as elusive as the one on Little Cumberland Island, standing at 60 feet tall. Built in 1838 to guide vessels into St. Andrews Sound, it operated until 1915 before deactivation. Now under the care of the Little Cumberland Island Association, access is restricted to residents and their guests. However, boaters can glimpse its timeworn profile from the waters or spot its top half from Jekyll Island’s southern shores.

For those sailing Southeastern waters, these lighthouses are more than just historical landmarks—they are steadfast companions, their beams echoing the voices of generations past. Whether marking safe passage or standing as testaments to resilience, Georgia’s coastal beacons continue to guide, inspire, and remind us of the seafarers who once looked to their light in the dark.

EXPLORE LIGHTHOUSES IN FLORIDA

Want a different way to explore Florida history? Follow Florida's Lighthouse Trail.

Florida has more than 1,800 miles of coastline, more than any other state in the continental United States. To ensure safe marine navigation along that vast stretch of waterfront, there is an impressive collection of lighthouses in Florida, including some of the nation's oldest and tallest. There are thirty lighthouses still standing proud in Florida. Most of these have been lovingly preserved and several have undergone complete restoration. Some lighthouses in Florida invite visitors to climb their spiraling staircases and take in the dazzling view from their lofty lanterns. Many others, although their towers aren't open to the public, are located in public parks and can be easily viewed at close range. Even the spider-legged reef lighthouses offshore can be conveniently viewed by boat. But in every case, these venerable beacons continue to illuminate the pages of history. Be sure to have your camera handy.

This tour of lighthouses in Florida explores the entire state, from the Northeast Coast down along the Atlantic Ocean to the Florida Keys, and back up the West Coast along the Gulf of Mexico.

Because days and hours of operation vary greatly, and some Florida lighthouses have minimum age and/or height requirements for climbing their towers, we strongly recommend calling the contact number provided before traveling to visit the lighthouses.

Northeast Coast

The journey begins at the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, (904) 829-0745. To get there from I-95, exit at S.R. 16 (Exit 318, about 30 miles south of Jacksonville) and drive east for about six miles until you reach U.S. 1. Turn right and proceed south for a mile and a half, then turn left on King St. Cross the Bridge of Lions and you'll be on Anastasia Island. Continuing on U.S. 1, you will appear to go past the Lighthouse on your left. You will pass RB Hunt Elementary also on the left. Get into the turn lane and make a left turn onto Red Cox Road, which becomes Lighthouse Avenue. The lighthouse parking lot will be on the right. This lighthouse holds the distinction of being the first in Florida officially authorized by the U.S. Congress. It was lit in May of 1824 on the site of an old Spainish watchtower that dated to 1589. The old lighthouse washed into the sea in the 1880s. The present 165-foot tall tower was constructed in between 1871 and 1874. It’s day mark is a black and white spiral with a red lantern. It is only lighthouse in the nation with this particular combination and the 10th tallest in the U.S.

All photos courtesy of VISIT FLORIDA

It also retains its original first-order Fresnel (pronounced "frenɪ'-el") lens. The lens was hand-blown in Paris, France, for the St. Augustine Lighthouse in 1874, and is 9-feet-tall. It uses one 1,000-watt bulb, and has six bulls-eye panels which cast a single "flash" of white light every 30 seconds. 119 stairs with eight landings make the tower climb relatively easy and well worth the sweeping view it affords of "America's Oldest City."

The beautifully restored keeper's house has galleries for viewing artifacts from shipwrecks located by underwater archaeologists. The history of the U.S. Coast Guard and the shrimping industry of St. Augustine in the 1940s and 1950s, are also shared. The nearby visitors center is both the entrance and exit, and houses a small exhibition gallery and a gift shop. An audio tour is offered free with admission. The admission fee helps with preservation and research about our nation’s earliest maritime history.

Since you will already be on A1A, the easiest and most scenic route to reach the next lighthouse is to simply stay on that road and drive south about 50 miles to Daytona Beach. A1A is also called Atlantic Ave. once you reach Daytona Beach. At the Dunlawton Bridge in Port Orange, A1A turns inland. Stay on South Atlantic Ave. until it ends (about five miles) and follow signs to reach the lighthouse. The Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse and Museum, (386) 761-1821, a 175-foot tall tower and one of the tallest masonry towers in the U.S., was completed in 1887 to guide mariners as they navigated one of the nation's most treacherous inlets. A National Historic Landmark, this is one of only a handful of early light stations that has retained all of its original buildings. Here you'll see a variety of exhibits in the restored keeper's dwellings, plus a modern exhibit hall devoted to the museum’s collection of magnificent Fresnel lenses. A 203-step climb brings you to the lighthouse tower's main gallery and a panoramic view of the Atlantic coast. The museum is open seven days a week.

To find the next lighthouse at Jupiter Inlet, head back north on A1A approximately five miles and turn left on Dunlawton Blvd. Follow Dunlawton five miles west to I-95. Head south on I-95 for 130 miles to the S.R. 70/Okeechobee Rd. exit (Exit 129). Bear right on Okeechobee Rd., then turn left on S. Kings Hwy. to get to the entrance ramp for Florida's Turnpike. Take the turnpike to the Indiantown Rd./Jupiter east exit (Exit 116) to U.S. Highway 1 and turn left. Turn Right on Alt. A1A/Beach Road, then take the first right into Lighthouse Park at Captain Armour’s Way. Designed by Lieutenant George Gordon Meade, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum's, (561) 747-8380, distinctive red tower was first illuminated in 1860. Meade was famous, not only as a Union general, but also as the engineer of several revolutionary screw-pile lighthouses. The 108-foot tower sits on a 48-foot tall ancient Indian shell mound and is topped with its original first-order Fresnel lens, possibly the oldest in the state. A small museum in the tower's former oil storage building showcases the station's long career. Extensive renovation of the lighthouse was completed in 2000.

Southeast Coast

To reach today's first lighthouse, return to I-95 and drive south 80 miles to Miami. Take the Rickenbacker Causeway exit (Exit 1A), continue east on the Causeway (S.R 913) across Biscayne Bay, past the Miami Seaquarium onto Key Biscayne itself. The road will end at the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, home of the Cape Florida Lighthouse, (305) 361-5811, Dade County's oldest structure. The original Cape Florida lighthouse was built at the southern tip of Key Biscayne and was heavily damaged in 1836 during a Seminole attack. The present tower, dating from 1847, was raised and improved by George G. Meade in 1855 to extend its visibility from the sea. An extensive restoration project spearheaded by The Dade Heritage Trust and the Florida Park Service was completed in 1996, so the lighthouse and keeper's quarters today faithfully reflect their 1855 appearance, minus the large second order Fresnel lens that was removed in 1878 when the tower was decommissioned.

The drive to Key West is a delightful experience. Drive west on Rickenbacker Causeway to U.S. 1 and turn south to Key West for the 154 mile drive surrounded by clear skies, sparkling waters and charming vistas. Follow U.S. 1 (Truman St.) through the city to Whitehead St. and the Key West Lighthouse and Museum, (305) 294-0012, will be on your left. The original lighthouse, activated in 1826, was replaced further inland, the first lighthouse built within the limits of a city, in 1848. The attractive white tower with its black lantern became a beacon to land travelers as well as to those traveling by sea. Today, beautifully restored and maintained by the Key West Art and Historical Society, a climb to the top of its 88 steps rewards the visitor with a spectacular view of the island and harbor. Visitors are also welcome in the museum, housed in the restored keeper's dwelling.

Southwest Coast

Depart Key West on U.S. 1 North, driving 129 miles to the southern entrance of Florida's Turnpike. Follow the turnpike north 39 miles to the I-75 North exit toward Naples (Exit 39), then travel I-75 north approximately 164 miles to the Kings Hwy. exit (Exit 170). After only about a block on King's Hwy., turn right on Veteran's Hwy. which will become S.R. 776. After approximately 10 miles, turn left on Gasparilla Rd. (also S.R. 771). Travel S.R. 771 to the Boca Grande Causeway and turn left, be prepared to stop and pay toll. At the four-way stop sign once you're on Gasparilla Island, turn right. The road makes a quick jog back to the left and you will be on Gulf Blvd. Stay on Gulf Blvd. for nine miles and at the stop sign at Belcher Rd., go straight ahead into the park; be prepared to pay a nominal fee. Here at the southern end of Gasparilla Island you will find the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse, (941) 964-0060. There are three buildings on the island. The first of the structures to be erected, the white Boca Grande Lighthouse is in the "cottage style" with a matching keeper's house. Built in 1927 and lit in 1931, the light was supplemented by a newer, skeletal steel tower, the Gasparilla Island Lighthouse, (941) 964-0375, designed to provide rear range guidance to ships entering the harbor. This structure is located one mile north. Both of these Florida lighthouses are operational today and although the steel tower is not open to the public, the clapboard lighthouse is, as well as the museum and gift shop.

Head further north to view the sunset and the lighthouse at Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge and State Park, (727) 893-2627, that marks the entrance to the Ports of Tampa and St. Petersburg. From Gasparilla Island, return to I-75, then drive north about 50 miles to I-275 and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. After crossing the bridge to St. Petersburg, take Exit 4 and travel west on the Pinellas Bayway S.R. 682, then south on Pinellas Bayway S.R. 679 to Fort DeSoto Park. Built in 1848, Egmont Key Lighthouse, was at the time the only lighthouse on the west coast situated between Key West and St. Marks. The present building was relocated inland upon its reconstruction in 1858. The Northern navy used the island as a post for its blockade of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Estimated to be the oldest structure in the Tampa Bay Area, the lighthouse is only accessible by private boat or excursion boats which operate from marinas throughout the St. Petersburg area.

North Central Coast

A pleasant day's drive northwest along the Gulf of Mexico leads to the St. Marks Lighthouse, located at the mouth of the St. Marks River, 20 miles south of Tallahassee. To get there from St. Petersburg, drive north on U.S. 19 approximately 70 miles. When U.S. 19 North joins U.S. 98 West in Crystal River, continue north 90 miles to Perry. Follow U.S. 98 west in Perry and drive 41 miles to C.R. 59 and turn left into the entrance to St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, (850) 925-6121. This brilliant white lighthouse sits east of the harbor entrance at the foot of C.R. 59, looking out over the blue-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The tower was erected in 1842 after efforts to provide a safe foundation for the original failed in the 1830s. Viewing of the lighthouse is permitted, and the surrounding habitat provides spectacular bird-watching opportunities. Dolphins can frequently be seen from the point.

Northwest Coast

Begin the day with an early morning drive along northwest Florida's coast. Follow scenic U.S. 98 west through the towns of Apalachicola, Panama City and Destin to Pensacola. After crossing the Pensacola Bay Bridge, veer left onto Bayfront Parkway, which turns into Main Street. Take a left onto Barrancas Avenue. Turn left onto South Navy Boulevard and drive through the east gate of Pensacola Naval Air Station. After passing through the guard station, turn right onto Taylor Road and then take another right on Radford Boulevard. Pensacola Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, (850) 393-1561, will be on your left, directly across from the National Naval Aviation Museum. First lit Jan. 1, 1859, the current Pensacola Lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation. Throughout its lifetime, this lighthouse withstood attacks by Union forces during the Civil War, lightning strikes, hurricanes, tornados and even an earthquake, but the structure held fast. Today, lighthouse is maintained jointly by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Pensacola Lighthouse Association. The tower is open to the public and the renovated 1869 keeper’s quarters displays artifacts from many eras of northwest Florida’s history, including the early Spanish settlements and the Civil War.

A NOTE FROM YOUR GRAPHIC DESIGNER

It all began when I visited St. Augustine, FL, for the first time. The history, the sights, and the St. Augustine Lighthouse. I became captivated by its size and uniqueness of the Lighthouse, as a landscape/ photographer, it made for a timeless and serene subject, that I knew I needed to photograph.

Since then, my mission was clear, I wanted to visit and photograph as many lighthouses as possible. While I didn’t always have my DSLR Canon camera handy, my cell phone was the next option.

Beautiful places such as Tybee Island Light Station in Georgia and Harbor Town Lighthouse in Hilton Head, SC were a great beginning.

Next was Ship Island Lighthouse in Gulfport, MS then out to The Harbor Lighthouse in Rockwall, TX.

Even the El Morro Lighthouse in San Juan, PR unexpectedly made the list.

Each lighthouse has its own uniqueness about it. Big, small, round, and square… striped, solid, swirled, even plaid, I’ve pretty much seen it all.

The Great Lakes naturally has numerous lighthouses that I’ve even begun a check o list.

I started with the Grand Haven Pier Lighthouse. What a beautiful and amazing place to see. I then back tracked a little to “Big Red” the Holland Michigan Lighthouse, wishing there was more time in Holland to find creative spots. Big Red is a cool lighthouse.

Next, I headed north to St. Ignace to see the Wawatam Lighthouse, Old Mackinac Point in Mackinac City, then Round Island Lighthouse at Mackinac Island.

My next adventure brought me to Bu alo, NY to see none other than the Bu alo Lighthouse A cute, smaller light station which I had the opportunity to climb, a little less than half of the size of the St. Augustine Lighthouse, the quirky ladders near the top certainly kicked my ass.

Lastly, while back in Michigan, I headed to Port Huron to visit The Fort Gratiot Lighthouse. Unfortunately, due to the weather, I was not able to climb. I did however enjoy a brief but fulfilling photographic day capturing the scenery around Lake Huron.

There are many lighthouses still in which I must see, my adventures have only begun. Big & Little Sable Point, Manistee North Lighthouse, Frankfort North Light, Tawas Point and more up and down the Erie coast are in my spring 2025 plans.

A future goal of mine is to capture Cape Hatteras and the remaining lighthouses in the Outer Banks as well.

Are there other exciting adventures you think I’d enjoy, please message me at design@ kylemediainc.com and be sure to follow my journey on social media @ SoListo Designs and @ SoListo Photography

Report From a US Sailing Accredited Community Sailing Program

US SAILING recently announced their new tiered pathway to the US SAILING team with the Olympic development programs. We welcome the pathway to the podium, but let’s not forget the impact community sailing programs have on introducing learn-to-sail programs within their communities, such as Team Paradise Sailing located in Miami, Florida.

The resources I’m looking at are impressive! Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) is the largest district in Florida and the 4th largest in the U.S. It serves over 330,000 students across more than 350 schools including traditional public schools, magnet programs, and charter schools. It’s extremely diverse, reflecting Miami-Dade’s multicultural population.

Throughout the years, we’ve welcomed youth from the foster care system, from transitional housing communities, from charter elementary schools and local community not-for-profit organizations; however, in September of 2024 Team Paradise embarked on the inaugural season of the Team Paradise ‘SYSTEM’ program. ‘SYSTEM’ is an acronym for Sailing+Youth+STEM. We are utilizing US Sailing’s Reach STEM Education Series with sailing as a medium to provide hands-on learning opportunities that inspire interest in fields of study like physics, marine biology, robotics, technology and more.

If the mission of your youth sailing program is similar to ours, consider taking the following steps: Research the schools in your area and connect with them to gauge interest in collaboration. Concentrate on charter schools and schools with magnet programs.

• Identify schools with STEM-based curriculum focusing on campuses closest to your venue.

• Utilize US Sailing’s Reach STEM Education Series as your lesson plan.

• If you don’t already have a classroom STEM teacher in mind, ask the school for recommendations. Having a great teacher in the classroom is just as important as having a skilled coach on the water!

To sustain the success of our youth sailing program, we focus on schools or groups within proximity to our sailing center and are partnering with groups most likely to enjoy being in and on the water and have a desire to learn to sail. As of this writing, we are half-way through the winter session of the ‘SYSTEM” sailing program. 94% of the kids returned from the fall session and we expect them to continue through the spring program. Not only are they learning basic sailing, but they are also applying the Reach STEM modules in the natural learning environment of Biscayne Bay.

It is our hope that this unique introduction to the sport will inspire young athletes to continue their sailing careers. It may not be the traditional pathway, but who knows? The next Olympic gold medalist could be right around the proverbial corner.

Team Paradise Sailing is a 501(c)(3) not for profit. For more information about us and how to donate, please visit www. teamparadise.org

MAPTECH® UNVEILS HARBOR DRONE VIDEO PROGRAM

Marine Navigation Product Leader Increases Boater Confidence While Allowing Marinas To Better Service Customers With New Tools

New Bedford, Mass. - Maptech®, an industry-leading provider of marine navigation chartbooks, digital navigation charts and many other marine navigation tools, announced today it has further expanded its offerings by unveiling its Harbor Drone Video Program. The new videos display coastal details that are not available from satellite or highaltitude aerial imagery for an easier and more approachable understanding of new harbors and facilities. Maptech currently has over 100 videos and are adding more all the time.

Satellite images and charts often fail to provide details that can be seen from the helm. The Maptech videos help the boater “see what they will see” when visiting a harbor or marina such as buoys and landmarks and important locations like fuel docks. The videos are easily accessible through QR codes in the Maptech Embassy Cruising Guides and online through MoreMaptech.com – a free site that provides comprehensive marine facility information to complement the videos.

Both marinas and boaters can benefit from the harbor drone videos. Marinas can showcase their facility and

harbor and provide a convenient way to explain to boaters how to approach the marina and fuel dock by following the aerial view of the property. For boaters, it is an effective way to visualize landmarks when visiting a new marina and harbor and view the approach and channels leading into the harbor. The expansion of Maptech’s Harbor Drone Video Program will bring even more easy-to-use videos to harbors along the East Coast.

“Maptech’s harbor drone videos are the answer to what both boaters and marinas have been asking for,” said Lee Estes, Owner and President, Maptech. “We’re proud to offer our customers this new technological resource through our mission to help boaters feel more confident, explore new places and operate more safely. This is truly a win-win for boaters and marinas.”

Maptech’s product line ranging from digital navigation to paper charts to 500+ page cruising guides and now the harbor drone video allows boaters to feel safe they are in good hands with Maptech. For more information on Maptech and its navigational tools, visit www.maptech.com

EVER WONDER WHY SOME PEOPLE GET MORE DONE?

Some people make boat maintenance look effortless—gleaming decks, tools on hand, and fast results. Their secret? The right system.

The System is the Solution

The Shurhold One Bucket System is designed to help you clean smarter, not harder. Unlike standard wash buckets, this all-in-one system streamlines washing and storage. It’s designed for maximum convenience, including everything needed for an efficient, thorough clean. Here’s what sets it apart:

The 5-Gallon Rope Handle Bucket

The heart of the system is a durable 5-gallon bucket with a comfortable rope handle for easy transport. The rope handle provides a secure grip, reducing hand fatigue and making it easier to carry, even when full of water or supplies. Rusty metal handles are uncomfortable and drip stains.

The Bucket Grate

Dirty water is the enemy of a scratch-free finish. The Bucket Grate sits at the bottom, trapping dirt and debris away from your brush or mitt. This means cleaner water, less risk of swirl marks, and a safer wash for your boat’s finish. The raised grid platform design allows dirt to settle below the washing area, keeping your tools cleaner for longer. That’s how professionals keep their surfaces spotless—by making sure their water stays clean.

The Bucket Seat / Lid

Dual-purpose functionality is key. The Bucket Seat / Lid transforms the bucket into a comfortable seat, making detailing jobs less of a backbreaker. It also doubles as a storage cover, keeping your supplies secure when not in use.

The Bucket Caddy

No more digging around for misplaced tools! The removable Bucket Caddy provides organized compartments for brushes, soap, and other essentials, ensuring everything is within reach. With a quick lift, you can access the bucket below without disrupting your workflow. The caddy’s ergonomic design includes built-in drainage holes, preventing water buildup and keeping your supplies dry between uses. When your tools are organized, your job gets done faster.

The Smarter Way to Clean

The Shurhold One Bucket System is the efficiency boost you need. It saves time, keeps tools clean, and organizes supplies. With a gritguard, caddy, and seat lid, it makes boat detailing easier. Clean like a pro—visit Shurhold.com!

Safe boaters all know the threat of lightning on the water is nothing to be taken lightly. And while there are plenty of portable lightning detectors and lightning tracker apps, the SFD-1000-N2K Talos Lightning Detector is the first engineered to be installed on the boat and integrated with the onboard NMEA 2000 network so warnings appear on all multifunctional display screens.

This Talos Lightning Detector utilizes stateof-the-art weather technologies, like those integrated into major weather station reporting systems. The system enhances situational awareness by alerting users to the proximity of a lightning strike with warnings posted directly to the vessel’s multifunction displays (MFDs) via industry standard Parameter Group Numbers (PGNs). The TALOS SFD-1000-N2K detects lightning strikes up to 25 nautical miles away and enables boaters to monitor the approach or departure of storms. Real-time alerts provide boaters with sufficient time to implement precautionary measures, thereby protecting themselves, their passengers, their equipment and their vessel from potential lightning damage.

The six-inch waterproof module is easily embedded on the boat and connects seamlessly to a NMEA 2000 network, providing a self-contained warning system that doesn’t need Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. With no maintenance or batteries to replace, this is truly plug-and-play, set-it-and-forget-it boat component.

TALOS LIGHTNING DETECTORS

Each year, more than 25 million cloud-to-ground lightning strikes occur, with nearly 300 individuals struck annually, leading to fatalities and life-altering consequences. The fact that lightning can strike from as far as 22 nautical miles means you can be at risk even when the skies appear clear.

This is particularly important when boating:

A lightning strike directly hitting a boat can cause severe damage, such as burning, or destruction of the boat’s electrical systems.

Even if a boat isn’t directly struck, nearby lightning can induce electrical surges that damage navigation, communication, and engine systems. This can leave the boater stranded, especially in areas with poor access to emergency help.

Lightning often comes with severe storms, including high winds, heavy rain, and rough seas. If a boat’s electrical system is compromised, it could be difficult or impossible to navigate or even survive in such conditions.

“This real-time lightning alert system enhances safety for both boaters and vessels, with the potential to save lives.” – Dan Gibson, Channel Manager for Talos Lightning Detectors.

Talos affirms the SFD-1000-N can accurately detect cloud-to-cloud and cloudto-surface lightning up to 25 nautical miles away, providing critical early warning time to act. Alerts are relayed directly to the boat's multifunction display screens, are accompanied by an audible signal and report the lightning strike distance

The SFD-1000-N2K was nominated for NMEA Best New Product Award and the 2024 IBEX 365 Innovation Awards.

AVIKUS PARTNERS WITH SAVVY NAVVY

Avikus, HD Hyundai's autonomous navigation technology developer, announced today that it has joined forces with cartography innovator Savvy Navvy to add powerful functionality to its recently released NeuBoat Dock II.

Designed for yachts over 40-feet such as sportfishing vessels, power catamarans, center consoles and sailing vessels, NeuBoat Dock II gives boaters a bird’s eye view for easy docking, single or multiple camera views, object detection and a docking assist path. As part of the partnership, Savvy Navvy has provided the base map cartography for NeuBoat Dock II.

“While the brilliance of NeuBoat Dock II resides in its intuitive approach to enhancing situational awareness, adding powerful functionality to the product relies on drawing from the existing innovation of our partners,” said Lim Do-hyeong, CEO of Avikus. “Savvy Navvy offers an incredible suite of cartography that provides exceptional resolution in a clutter-free presentation. Savvy Navvy has been a supportive partner in the recent expansion of our product and their maps are the perfect canvas for our navigation information to be displayed. We are looking forward to building upon this partnership to provide an even more refined platform for our users.”

“We have had a great experience working side-by-side with the Avikus team to create a simpler docking experience for boaters,” said Jelte Liebrand, CEO and Founder of Savvy Navvy. “We are aligned in the singular goal of making boating more accessible, more intuitive and ultimately safer through the use of cuttingedge technology. We are confident that users will enjoy the seamless integration of our two disciplines into one cohesive product that is easy to use and provides exceptional value to the boater in a reduced stress boating experience.”

NeuBoat Dock II consists of a six-camera system based on Avikus’ advanced autonomous vessel technology. It offers a comprehensive 3D surround view, along with individual camera perspectives, to ensure safe and precise maneuvers during docking and navigation in confined spaces. Users can seamlessly pan around the 360-degree view, enhancing situational awareness and facilitating confident navigation in tight environments. It includes a dynamic virtual bumper, which is activated on the sections of the vessel that are closest to non-water objects for collision avoidance, as well as Docking Assist Guidance and a Home Point for intuitive return to a selected docking location and preferred docking position.

Savvy Navvy, often referred to as ‘Google maps for boats’, is a revolutionary, easy-to-use app that brings everything leisure boaters and anglers need for a seamless boating experience. Unlike any other boating navigation solution, Savvy Navvy provides smart routing — giving users the optimal route and dynamic ETAs based on real-time data: departure time, chart information, weather conditions, tide, boat specifications and local regulations. Points of interest, including marina information, marine services and local businesses are also shown in the app helping users plan their journeys both online and offline. Available on Android, IOS, PC and Mac, Savvy Navvy and can be used on multiple devices and is available in both free and “premium” options with enhanced access and functionalities.
