President’s Letter

By Tim Putz ‘63, President

Hi Alumni and Friends, Spring has arrived in Santa Barbara and with our record rainfall this year, everything is looking green at the school. The last few months have been active for the association and its members. November our alumni veterans were honored at a ceremony in front of J. R. Richards Gym and the commemorative rock. Students and alumni attended and the Main Hall was lined with posters for these Don alumni. Your association has retained the services of a professional web site designer who is now completely updating our site. There is a possibility it could be up and running by the time you read this www.sbdonsalumni.com. It will offer new links which will enable alumni to pledge donations to their classes and purchase memorabilia. In February, we started our interviews of senior scholarship applicants. Each year I have interviewed many of these students, I am amazed at the caliber of the applicants, the colleges they wish to attend and their goals for the future. This is another reason to be a proud Don. March 17th was our SBHS Wall of Fame induction ceremony and we were proud to honor, Lee Wardlaw ’73, Roger Aceves ’73, Al Geiberger, ‘55. The Peabody Stadium project was moved back to this June after the class of 2017 graduates. Principal John Becchio has more in his column. Our newsletter is constantly evolving with each issue. I urge each alumni member who can do so, to receive it via email in a PDF format. This will save us money and make us more green---olive green, of course. Please sign up for the digital version by contacting Sharon Keinath Henning ‘74: sbhsAlumniAssoc@gmail.com You can keep up with our activities and those at school by visiting our website: www.sbdonsalumni.com. Tim Putz ’63, SBHSAA President

Principal’s Letter - John Becchio Hello Alumni, A happy Spring hello to all of you from all of us here at Santa Barbara High School. I am excited to bring you the news that we finally hired a construction management firm that is putting the bid contracts together in preparation for the start of the Peabody Stadium renovation project. It has been a complex project to this point, but I believe we finally have a solid construction start date that will be in mid-June. That means that graduation for the Class of 2017 will be held in Peabody Stadium, and construction will begin shortly after. Thank you once again for all who participated with us in that fundraising campaign. Shortly, you will see those dollars put into action. Last Spring I brought you the news of a new building in the garden area that would be completed, and indeed was completed this past summer. If you get a chance to stop by and see the outdoor Green Lab I believe you will be very impressed by that new work space for our students. We produce honey, have chickens that not only do the weeding of the rows of crops but also produce delicious eggs, small scale food production, and an aquaponics project where fish fertilize our seeds. All is well here at Santa Barbara High and we hope that you will continue to stay in touch with what is happening at our school. Thank you for supporting the programs and people that make SBHS great. Go Dons! Your Principal, John Becchio

Santa Barbara Dons Athletics Hall of Fame

2017 Distinguished OUR DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI Alumni2017 This year’s Distinguished Alumnus is David L. Ortiz. David has served in the Santa Barbara County for 39 years as a teacher and administrator. He has helped educate over 30, 000 students and has mentored numerous teachers, counselors, administrators, and staff.

Renowned for its athletic excellence - successful teams, outstanding players, exemplar coaches - steeped in longstanding traditions, unabashed school spirit, deep-rooted pride, and admirable sportsmanship, it is only fitting the Santa Barbara Athletics Hall of Fame was created to recognize and honor Santa Barbra High’s athletic legacy of achievements.

As a native of Santa Barbara, David attended local schools including McKinley Elementary School, La Cumbre Junior High School, and Santa Barbara High School. He is a proud member of the class of 1972. Memorable to his high school experience was playing basketball with his life long friends under the leadership of Coach Jack Triguero. Coach was instrumental in developing character traits that promoted hard work, perseverance, and determination that is foundational to David’s leadership.

The establishment of the Hall of Fame was years in the making and the culmination of a dream for the 43-year old group, Ye Ole Gang. Established in 1974, the Ye Ole Gang began as a backyard barbecue with six people and now has 600 attendees who come together each year to honor those worthy of Dons Hall of Fame status. The SBHS Hall for Fame inaugural induction for Dons athletics took place on January 26. The evening kicked off with a notable recognition. All previous honorees from the annual Ye Ole Gang gathering, spanning the past 43 years, were assembled and this distinguished group was officially inducted into the newly created SBHS Dons Athletics Hall of Fame. The 2017 inductees included Peter ’52 and Gerd Jordano ‘57 (special achievement), Alison Hardey ’80 (tennis), Randall Cunningham’81 (football), and Ryan Spilborghs ’98 (baseball).

After attending Santa Barbara City College, he transferred to San Diego State University where he completed his Bachelor’s Degree and earned his teaching credential. He returned to Santa Barbara to begin his career in education. He taught for two years at La Colina Junior High School while also coaching baseball and basketball. Due to declining enrollment, David transitioned to Santa Barbara County Education Office. For ten years he was assigned to Los Robles High School that serves the Los Prietos Boy’s Camp. During this invaluable experience, he became interested in leadership responsibilities. Through the encouragement and guidance of three deeply valued mentors including SBHS co-principals, Bill Jackson and Gene Snyder, and La Colina principal, Bob Bowen, David then continued his education at the University of California at Santa Barbara to earn his Masters Degree and Preliminary Administrative Credential in Education Administration.

THE ART OF MAKING DONATIONS

IN SEARCH OF DISTINCTION Each year the Associated Student Body and your Alumni Association strive to honor former alumni who have left their mark on the world. We attempt to acknowledge the efforts and accomplishments by adding their names to the Wall of Fame or adding them to our list of Distinguished Alumni. While there are probably many who deserve this honor, we never hear of them until we read their obituary. Unfortunately they are gone and the opportunity to give them the recognition they so rightly deserve has been lost.

Many times over the years, we have been asked how one makes a donation to the Alumni Association or how one might create a scholarship. The donation can be accomplished in two ways – either a gift of funds or as a gift of and investment. If the gift is of funds already in cash form, it can be made by check, cash or money order. When it is an investment, it can be made as a transfer from your brokerage account to our account. This procedure has benefits in two ways depending on whether you have a gain or loss in the investment. If you have a Capital Gain in the investment it is best to transfer the investment itself and assume the full current value as a charitable contribution. However, if you have a Capital Loss it is be to sell the investment and assume the full loss on your taxes.

We would like to acquire your assistance in identifying those “Dons” who have become outstanding in their field of endeavor, have contributed to the well-being of their fellowman or who have developed or discovered things that we all have enjoyed. Perhaps on of your classmates has become someone we admire for their gift to society. Please help us by submitting their name/s, a possible source of contact and a brief description of why you feel they should be honored. One never knows, you may become of those nominated. We thank those nominated. We thank those of you who respond. Send the information to: SBHS Alumni Association – P.O. Box 6121, Santa Barbara, CA 93160-6121.

Our scholarships are held in two types, either as a Perpetual or as a Non-Perpetual scholarship. Scholarships may be in honor of a relative, a teacher, a friend or a class. Quite a few of our Classes have established Perpetual Scholarships. A Perpetual Scholarship must have sufficient funds to earn at least a $500.00 scholarship each year and will be combined with another to make the total of the $1000.00 scholarship. A Non-Perpetual scholarship may be in any amount and is given in the calendar year after the donation is received. Those scholarships may be set up to provide a scholarship for more than one year depending on the amount donated. Should you have other questions, our Treasurer Norma Marquez, would be more than happy to assist you. Her email is: normam60@cox.net

Or Email us at sbhsalumniassoc@gmail.com FIRST ONCE A DON SCHOLARSHIPS TO BE AWARDED Fifteen Once a Don, Always a Don Scholarship recipients have been selected and are to be awarded to our alumni. Three of these scholarship recipients are students who will be pursuing graduate degrees in various parts of the country. Twelve scholarships to be awarded to alumni Dons are going to students who are continuing their undergraduate education at their chosen colleges. This is the first year this scholarship has been awarded and was made possible through Claud Hardesty’s generous bequest from which not only seniors could benefit, but any Don alumnus. He was principal from 1957 to 1970.

In 1976, the first year we awarded scholarships, we gave two $150.00 scholarships. This May, we will be awarding over $100,000.00. That will bring our totals to well over $1,000,000.00 and 900 seniors and alumni.
