President’s Letter - By Tim Putz‘63

Principal’s Letter - Elise Simmons

Hello Alumni and Friends,

Hello Alumni,

For those of you living on the west coast, rain has come to California. After years of drought we are now able to enjoy looking at green mountains and adequate water supplies for several years to come. This past February board members and I interviewed seniors for college scholarships. I have been doing this for over 8 years and each year I am amazed at the caliber of students seeking our alumni association’s scholarships, which are all funded by you, our generous alumni. The students come from all backgrounds and find time to do community service, work, sports, clubs, assist at home, go to school and still have amazing grade point averages. Over the past few years, the alumni board has been discussing moving our annual meeting and scholarship awards ceremony from a BBQ event to the Santa Barbara High School Theater with reception following. More details are in this issue. May 19th at 3 pm on campus is this year’s date and venue and of course, alumni are always invited to attend. The alumni association each year receives about a dozen requests for classroom assistance (CAP). These requests are reviewed by the board monthly. There is a $500 limit on these requests and must be used on classes that benefit everyone. Many departments have limited budgets from the district and many teachers spend their own money on classroom necessities, ie: books, field trips and other special needs. Alumni members are welcome to contribute to our CAP fund. Mark your calendars for the first “All Class Reunion”. Saturday October 5th from 11 am to 4 pm. There will be tours of the school and the beautiful, new Peabody Stadium. There will be booths set up for classes by decade and several food trucks for your enjoyment. More details in this issue. “Once a Don, always a Don”

We are more than halfway through the school year and so much has happened since the fall. In December, alongside the Ye Olde Gang and the Alumni Association, we recognized our Alumni athletes with the reveal of the Hall of Fame plaque in the entrance of the JR Richards Gymnasium. It’s a beautiful plaque that celebrates the spirit of our Don Athletic community. During the fall and winter sport season, we witnessed our current athletes excel on the football field, golf course, basketball court, and in the pool. We are proud of their accomplishments in the Channel League, California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), and the State playoffs. Homecoming and the Winter Formal were well attended and fun was had by all. Homecoming had the largest turnout EVER with over 1200 students dancing the night away in Dodson’s Meadow. There have been a variety of school wide events held in the Quad. At the end of the semester, therapy dogs helped students destress and recently a Career Fair took place with over 24 tables, each one representing a different career or job. Our 500+ seniors have just wrapped up the Alumni Association scholarship interviews, and are gearing up for Prom (will be held at the Moxi Museum!), graduation, and grad night. As many of the local Alumni know, we have had a very wet winter. Over 25 days of rain! The good news is that Lake Cachuma is now 75% full. The not so good news, the Peabody Stadium project has been delayed due to the weather. We are looking at a new completion date of August 2019. This means that the Class of 2019 will be graduating in the beautiful Santa Barbara Bowl. We are lucky to have such an awesome ‘plan B’ for our graduation. Thank you once again for all who participated with us in the fundraising campaign. We will be able to enjoy athletic events and graduation in the new stadium next year! Santa Barbara High School continues to be a thriving school, full of hardworking students and staff. We want to thank you for your continued support of students, our staff, and our programs. Go Dons! Sincerely, Elise Simmons, E.D., Principal

43rd ANNUAL MEETNG, DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AND SCHOLARSHIPS TO BE AWARDED ON SBHS CAMPUS Over the years, we have enjoyed alumni gatherings at dinner dances and barbeques. Please join us for this afternoon reception for our honored guests: our Distinguished Don, John Suzuki ’46, our scholarship recipients and you, our loyal alumni. Our meeting and ceremony will be in the auditorium on Sunday, May19th at 3:00pm and will be followed by an outdoor reception with food and drink. YE OLE GANG PRESENTS PERMANENT PLAQUE TO SCHOOL

2017 Distinguished DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI 2019

Alumni JOHN SUZUKI ‘46

This fall members of Ye Ole Gang presented SBHS with a beautiful perpetual plaque with the names of all of the athletes honored by them in the past. Seeing the names on the plaque bring back memories of the SBHS athletic greats from all eras. Several past recipients were in attendance for the unveiling. Names of new inductees will be added. ASB students participated in the event and Dave Bolton ’81, Ye Ole Gang president, presided over the presentation in front of J.R. Richards Gym. The plaque now resides in the foyer of the gym. Please stop by and reminisce.

John Suzuki ’46 has been selected as this year’s Distinguished Alumnus. A true Santa Barbara native, John was born at Cottage Hospital to Japanese immigrant parents in June 1928. He and his wife, Fumi Inouye Suzuki ‘40 raised their family of four alumnae daughters, Patti Suzuki Boucher 74, Cindy Suzuki Hernandez ’76, Susan Suzuki Walters ’77 and Kim Suzuki Penman ’80 in the same house on Santa Barbara’s eastside where he was raised with an older sister, Kiyo ’40 and brother, Tadeo. He attended Franklin Elementary, Santa Barbara Junior High School, SBHS and Santa Barbara City College where he majored in business/accounting. John entered SBHS in 1942 but shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt ordered all Americans of Japanese ancestry (127,000 living in the continental US at the time) to leave their homes and enter internment/concentration camps. John and his family were given less than 24 hours to pack their possessions, travel and enter a temporary Japanese interment camp in Tulare, California. They were transferred to Gila Bend, Arizona where the family spent 3 years. (Sixty-two percent of the 112,000 Japanese from the west coast interned were United States citizens). When World War II was coming to a close, John, then 15, and his brother had the opportunity to go to Chicago to work. After a time in Chicago they returned to the camp. Thereafter, Japanese Americans were allowed to return home and the family traveled back to Santa Barbara and to their eastside home.

Past honorees attended the presentation of perpetual plaque.

BY-LAW PROPOSAL TO BE VOTED UPON AT GENERAL MEETING 5/19

The following proposal to our Constitution and By-Laws is up for a vote of the membership at our General Meeting May 19,2019 in the SBHS Auditorium. Please review. Article 5 – Officers and Board of Directors

John re-entered SBHS and played on the varsity football team. He also played baseball and graduated in in 1946. After graduating from SBCC, he decided to join his father with his landscape gardening business.

Section 2,

John was drafted to serve in the Army in 1950, serving in the Korean War. He was offered a position as an interpreter, but became a Sergeant Tank Commander. Despite the past governmental injustice to the Japanese community, John loyally served his country. Upon his return to Santa Barbara, he married Fumi Inouye.

The position of Director Emeritus shall be offered to an officer or Director who has served 25 accumulated years on the Board. They shall have the same rights and privileges as an elected member of the Board. They shall not have a limited term of office. This does not apply to past Presidents as they are members for life. REMINDERS FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP

Please take a few minutes and check the Lost List on our website (https://www.sbdonsalumni.com/). Is there anyone on the list you know? If so, please have them contact us at SBHSDonsAlumni@gmail.com or you can let us know about them.

John was a semi-professional bowler with sponsors in place to enter the professional circuit, but decided the traveling would take him away too much from his young family. He holds several high average bowling records in Santa Barbara and was honored by the Athletic Round Table for his achievements.

Once in a while we will send out an email with important or interesting information that can’t wait for the next newsletter. We will try to keep them to a minimum, but there is a lot going on with your association, and you would not want to mass anything!

He is active in veterans groups and he has volunteered for several organizations, including local gardeners’ associations, the Japanese American League and is a past president of the American Legion. John is still in contact with his SBHS classmates and can never says no to anyone who might ask him for help of any kind. He is very much a giving and a "behind the scene” kind of person, never wanting to draw attention to himself. The Santa Barbara High School Alumni Association is proud to honor John as our 2019 Distinguished Alumnus and a very proud Don.

DON DOINGS Three beautiful 12-foot Cedar Deodora evergreen trees were purchased with donations made in memory of Vincent Cavallero ’40. They replace three trees at the front of the school, which had died after a long life shading students. At SBHS, Vince was a member of the Horticultural Classes, who with his classmates would walk up the Riviera to Franceschi Park every afternoon for classes with Mr. Franceschi and his protégé.

Pauline left SBHS in her sophomore year to care for her mother and completed her graduation requirements in 1959. Recently, her family presented her with her diploma to the traditional alma mater music played when seniors walk down the hill. Peggy Sands Orchowski ’59, Congressional journalist and Washington Bureau Chief of the Hispanic Outlook magazine, gave a “Book Talk” for students in the SBHS Library while in Santa Barbara for her induction onto the Wall of Fame. Her two books, Immigration and the American Dream: Battling the Political Hype and Hysteria (2008, Roman and Littlefield) and The Law that Changed the Face of America: The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 (2015, R & L) are considered pivotal works in understanding our nation’s immigration laws. We like to think that her career in journalism began at SBHS as The Forge Editor in 1959.

His wife, who keeps score for the Dons and his son, Joe Bregante ‘06, Dave’s assistant coach, support him on the court.

Shannon Decker ’02 recently experienced the thrill and grueling challenges as a contestant on “The Titan Games,” a new NBC series. The TV show pits contestants of the same gender in a difficult challenge that tests endurance, agility, strength and speed before a studio audience with the ultimate male and female champions of the 10 episode-show winning $100,000 each. Shannon, who was the captain of the SBHS girls’ basketball team, went on to become a fitness model and personal trainer after attending SBBC and earning a bachelor’s in childhood education at CSU Channel Islands.

Former SBHS instrumental music teacher, Ike Jenkins, passed away this past December. Student musicians of all ages shared their remembrances and tributes to their former musician mentor. The beautiful main entrance to SBHS was used at the beginning and end of a Saturday Night Live skit on March 30. The skit was “Test Prep” and can be viewed on YouTube.

Former SBHS water polo standout and all-time leading scorer, Sawyer Rhodes ‘17, was selected to play for the U.S. Men’s National Team in its three-game series against Italy at the end of December in Orange County. It was Sawyer’s debut with the senior national team. He had recently won a NCAA water polo national championship with USC where he is currently majoring in real estate development.

DAVE BOLTON ‘81: FROM DON TO COMMANDER Reflecting on the company he founded three decades ago, David Bolton ‘81, noted that its current name, Cultural Global Media (CGM), “evolved as I evolved.” That was said as he prepared this spring for an honor seldom bestowed on an American, being decorated by King Felipe VI of Spain as a Commander in the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic.* It could be the latest stage of his evolution. From the names of his company, one can trace how Bolton’s evolution took place. The cultural part, his focus on Spanish history and language, began in fourth grade at Montecito Union School. “I remember my teacher, Mrs. Pacuños (spelling approximate), introduced me to the Spanish language.” His interest in things Hispanic took off from there. “Later, my best friend in high school, John Diaz, introduced me to other members of his family, and I was immersed in the language and culture through them.” (It should also be noted, although maybe a coincidence, that the two colleges he attended have athletic team nicknames of Vaqueros and Aztecs.) Following two years at SB City College, he attended San Diego State University and graduated with a dual major in History of Latin America and Journalism. That brings us back to the global media part of his company’s name. Although he was The Forge Editor in his senior year, he got his first formal journalistic experience writing for the News Press in spring of 1979, before joining The Forge that fall. “Actually, I’ve never not been a journalist,” he declared, and that goes beyond print media into radio and television. For example, just four years after leaving the Home of the Dons, he created “Friday Football Focus” on KEYT. His company has produced documentaries on varied subjects, but is perhaps better known for sports coverage via Fox Deportes, Telemundo and CBS. Most recently, CGM was hired by the National Football League to produce and coordinate live coverage of Super Bowl LIII for Fox Sports Latin America. Coming back to culture again, Bolton is in his seventh year as Executive Director of the California Missions Foundation, traveling extensively up and down our state, preserving and enhancing Spanish missions. It’s a full-time job in itself. Bolton presently serves on the boards of Old Spanish Days Fiesta (Secretary), the United States-Spain Council in Washington, D.C., SB Maritime Museum and SB Boys and Girls Club. Oh, one more, Ye Ole Gang (President since 2001). “Once a Don, Always a Don.” And now a Commander. *(This title has been bestowed over two centuries on only a few dozen U.S. citizens, but Bolton is now the second Santa Barbaran. Dr. Jarrell Jackman, former head of the SB Trust for Historic Preservation, was decorated in 2016.) Interview written by Bob Wakefield ‘48 WORLD DEBUT OF ALUMNA’S SYMPHONY AT SBHS

Gracie Fisher ’15 and third generation Don, debuted her symphony, Waltz of the Waves to a packed, standing room only audience at our SBHS Auditorium this past December. A Winter Music Showcase was envisioned and organized by Gracie and her family to benefit The Gracie Fisher Foundation, established in 2016 to spread adaptive art and music education to the special needs community in Santa Barbara. The Showcase was a fabulous coming together of musical groups in which Gracie had been an active participant. Singing together, present SBHS and San Marcos Madrigal groups started the show. Gracie’s classmate, William Belfiore ’15, emceed the event and introduced SB Strings, a K-12 group of string musicians and SB Youth Music Academy, which provides an outlet for performance to young musicians of all styles of music. In addition, Gracie’s former fellow SBHS Madrigal singers, home from college for the holidays came together for a reprise in Gracie’s honor as did the male singing group of Bradley Devine ’16, Andrew Gutierrez ’15, Aaron Linker ‘15, Alessio Morello ‘15, Ben Zevallos ‘17, David Zevallos ’15 and William Belfiore ’15. The Grande Finale was the debut of Gracie’s Waltz of the Waves by the SB Youth Symphony (12-18 year old performers), to an awed and appreciative audience, which responded with an extended standing ovation. In Gracie’s senior year at SBHS, she was paralyzed with Acute Flaccid Myelitis and within a very short period her life changed. However, there was no stopping Gracie from doing what she loves: music and art, and in doing so she found the power of healing through the arts. She now shares that power with others through her foundation and its hands-on approach. This amazing young woman was recently interviewed by National Public Radio (NPR) and has been featured and followed by the Santa Barbara NewsPress and KEYT. www.graciefisherfoundation.org

OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS CORNER

SBHS MAIN ENTRANCE PERFECT WEDDING VENUE FOR 2 DONS

Our featured Board Member is Motome Kay Van Horn ’54 who was born in 1936, in Arroyo Grande, CA, to Akira and Masako Fukamaki Saruwatari ’32. During World War II, her family was relocated first to Tulare Relocation Center where they were housed in horse stalls. The family was then taken to Gila River Concentration Camp in Arizona for three years. The Japanese were not welcomed back to the west coast, and fortunately, her father was offered work in Chicago, IL. Santa Barbara became their home in 1946, where she attended Franklin Elementary School, Santa Barbara Junior High School and graduated from SBHS in 1954. She earned an AA degree from Santa Barbara City College. Kay married SBHS graduates. In 2001 she married William P. Van Horn ’54. Her first marriage was to Robert Yamada ’48, and they had four daughters, Linda, Adele, Denise and Marie. All four graduated from Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta. Kay was married to Dennis Oliver Brown ’54 for five years. Both Yamada and Brown are deceased. In 1983 Kay was diagnosed with breast cancer and now has Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a complication of radiation. She has lectured at schools, churches, colleges and businesses for the American Cancer Society and received the Volunteer Service Award in 1990 and featured in the SB News Press. Christine Cavallero’38, first SBHSAA president, asked Kay to consider joining the board and she joined the board in 1990. Kay has served as Executive Secretary, Recording Secretary and on many committees: Distinguished Alumni, Always a Don scholarship review and the All Dons Reunion Committee. In 1986 she retired after working for 18 years as the business manager for the SB County Treasurer-Tax Collector. For the past 10 years she has volunteered at the SB Trust for Historic Preservation (Presidio State Park) as a member and photo exhibit guide serving on the Asian American History Advisory Committee. This committee hosts the annual Asian American Film Series in July and the annual Asian American Festival in October. Her service is in memory of her grandparents, Inokichi and Ai Fukamaki and her Mother, Masako, who once lived on the Presidio property known as Nihonmachi (Japan Town) prior to World War II. Kay has established a SBHS Perpetual Scholarship in memory of her mother, Masako Fukamaki Saruwatari. Kay’s six Fukamaki aunts are SBHS alumni, and her uncle, Dale Fukamaki ’48, was named a Distinguished Alumnus in 1991. Her sisters, Aiko ‘51, Dianne ‘56, Peggy ’64, and her son-inlaw, Clint Weisman ’75 are graduates as well as three of her six grandchildren: Gio ’13 and Siena Goggia ‘15 and Andrew Weisman ’15 who was awarded a SBHSAA and Hardesty Scholarships. A grand nephew, Ryder, now in kindergarten, is a future Don (2031). Kay has been a very dedicated, committed and valued member of our board. Thank you Kay for your many years of service to the SBHSAA.

Maradee Turnbull Kyriaco ’72 and Robert Flex Gusman ’71 were married this past November where it all began— SBHS! Maradee’s son, James Kyriaco Jr. ’91 walked her down the main walkway aisle among family and friends-many from junior high and high school. Sally Hammel ’71 officiated and before the ceremony began the assembled guests were invited to remember SBHS classmates who had passed on. The late fall sun shone upon the bride and groom and a golden glow reflected on the school where it all began. We wish these loyal Dons well.

NEW SCHOLARSHIP TO HONOR JOBY NUÑEZ’ ’66 The family of Joby Nuñez ’66 has established a new scholarship in his name. Joby passed away this winter after a courageous battle with cancer. Joby was an outstanding football, basketball and baseball athlete while at SBHS. Always upbeat and a true Don, he went on to play football at Oregon State and was on the team which upset No. 1ranked USC in 1967. After returning to Santa Barbara and graduating from UCSB, he earned his teaching credential and taught at all three high schools, 10 years at SBHS where he took the Dons soccer team to CIF finals in 1989. His last years as an educator were in administration. He was involved in Ye Ole Gang and with the alumni association. He was the go-to guy for all information about SBHS athletics and would occasionally pop into the alumni room on Fridays for a quick look at the archives. Joby’s parents were both alumni of SBHS and his mother, Beatrice Terres Nuñez Rosales ’40, was a longtime SBHS faculty member.

REUNIONS

REMEMBER THE BARBARETTES? Hey Fellow Dons! Test your memory! From 1956 through 1973 the Santa Barbara Barbarettes served as the city’s ambassadors to the state and the nation. The group, formed of high school girls but not affiliated with any school, was famed for their precision performances of sophisticated drill routines. Many of these girls were students at Santa Barbara High School. Performing in parades from California to Washington, D.C. the girls were honored by declarations of “Barbarette Day”, “Barbarette Week” and were written into the Congressional Record through a resolution commending their outstanding achievements. They appeared in national magazines such as Time, Life, and U.S. News & World Report. The Barbarettes represented the state of California in President Johnson’s inaugural parade, were featured performers at the first Super Bowl and appeared in various television shows, including Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color among many other prestigious events.

Each year the Associated Student Body and your Alumni Association strive to honor former alumni who have left their mark on the world. We attempt to acknowledge the efforts and accomplishments by adding their names to the Wall of Fame or adding them to our list of Distinguished Alumni. While there are probably many who deserve this honor, we never hear of them until we read their obituary. Unfortunately they are gone and the opportunity to give them the recognition they so rightly deserve has been lost.

One never knows, you may become of those nominated. We thank those nominated. We thank those of you who respond. Send the information to: SBHS Alumni Association – P.O. Box 6121, Santa Barbara, CA 93160-6121.
