2018 GRADUATION AT COUNTY BOWL The Class of 2018 made graduation history this past June when they distinguished themselves as the only class to graduated from the SB County Bowl. It was a lovely ceremony in a beautiful setting, however students lamented not having their traditional walk “down the hill”. In response to their lament, the alumni association has promised the graduates that they will be welcome to walk down the hill ahead of the Class of 2019 into the new Peabody Stadium. It was also the last graduation for Dr. John Becchio, Principal of SBHS for seven years. Seating was limited in the Bowl and students were assigned a set number of tickets, therefore the ceremony was live streamed and was shown in the auditorium on campus. Peabody Stadium is expected to be completed in time for graduation, 2019.

Principal’s Letter - Elsie Simmons

Hi Alumni and Friends,

Hello Alumni,

Peabody Stadium is well on its way to completion by 2019 graduation and the construction is very impressive as you can see by the photo I took in early September in the newsletter.

Welcome to a new school year! I am excited to be the new principal of Santa Barbara High School. Although I was not born and raised in Santa Barbara, I have lived in this wonderful community for my entire adult life- over 24 years! And, I am happily married to a Don, Andy Vazquez, class of 1992. The traditions of SBHS are historic and long -standing and I look forward to continuing the spirit and message of “Once a Don, Always a Don!”

I want to welcome Dr. Elise Simmons our new principal at Santa Barbara High School. She has many years in the district. Dr. John Becchio has accepted a position at our district office. Our annual meeting and awards BBQ were an overwhelming success. Almost 60 seniors received scholarships as well as many alumni who received the new “Always a Don” Scholarship. This brought the total monies awarded for that day to over $230,000.00 and over 1.4 million to date.

Over the summer, the Peabody Stadium project was very active and the project is still on track towards the anticipated completion date of Spring 2019. What was once a large space with a lot of dirt is now surrounded by concrete walls and walkways. Most importantly, the Dons walk is nearly completed and the beginnings of the grandstand are being seen. Thank you once again for all who participated with us in the fundraising campaign.

Our alumni membership now stands close to 4200 worldwide. If you know of any classmates who are not members, get them to join. The cost is only $40 for a lifetime membership and $60 for an alumni couple.

This school year we welcome 567 new 9th graders and their families. We began the year with our 9th grade orientation that is run entirely by our ASB students. In addition, we are welcoming 11 new teachers members. The new members are in the areas of Culinary Arts, Music/Band, English, Physics, Physical Education, and Special Education. Over the summer, teachers worked over 900 hours preparing for the new school year! This work was supported by the Foundation for Santa Barbara High School.

You are now able to order your Dons attire and everything from license plate frames to shirts and hats at our online store. We are posting up-todate information on our association and school activities at www.sbdonsalumni.com On Saturday, October 5, 2019 from 11 to 4. the alumni association and student body will be hosting our first ever “all class reunion” weekend for all classes. This is a first, modeled after college reunion weekends. Stay tuned for updates.

Santa Barbara High School is ready for the new school year, our 143rd year being the most excellent high school in town. And, we want to thank you for all of your support of students and our programs. Go Dons!

In closing, I would like to encourage all alumni to consider gifting in your class’ name any amount for our fabulous seniors and scholarships. All of the alumni scholarships are funded by our great alumni.

Sincerely, Elise Simmons, Ed.D Principal

outstanding quarterback is a Don...and led the Dons to the 2018 win over San Marcos (48-0). We also applaud his sensitive appreciation of our campus which he expressed to his Dad as they walked to the JR Richards Gymnasium at sunset one evening several years ago: “Dad, if I had a chance to decide where I was going to go...it would be Santa Barbara High . . . . . Look at it here, the architecture, the old buildings...There's the football stadium, the gym, the baseball field—it's all together, and it's downtown.” Thank you, Frankie (and Paul)...glad you became a Don! Inspired by his young cousin who struggled in school before she was diagnosed with near-sightedness, senior Mason Lender ‘19, has written the self-published book, Eyes for Success: A Story About the Importance of Early Vision Screening. Under the guidance of a local ophthalmologist, Mason wrote the illustrated, bilingual book designed for children 4 through 8 which has been distributed to area schools and libraries and is available on Amazon.com. We would love a copy of your book, Mason! Thank you to recent authors added to our Alumni Authors’ Shelf: Rebecca Cole-Turner ’68 and Mary Zurbuchen ’68, who hand delivered their works during their homecoming to SBHS for their 50th year reunion. Please visit our extensive and continually growing shelf of alumni authors in the school library. If you are a published author, we would love to have a copy of your works for our shelf. Book Feature: Mystery of the Marie The book, Mystery of the Marie, is a memoir of a childhood tragedy that surfaced a Cold War mystery that includes directly and indirectly Santa Barbara High School alumni who were impacted by the events. In Mystery of the Marie, Teresa Newton-Terres delves into the true story of the disappearance of her father, Diego “Jim” Santos Terres Jr. ‘48, from the vessel Marie when she was two years old. When the Marie vanished, her crew was conducting a covert underwater communications experiment for a Raytheon-related project in the waters off Santa Barbara in 1960, which left a lot of questions unanswered. Among the seven men lost, four victims were found and three bodies were never located, including Teresa’s father and an eminent scientist. In addition to Jim Terres, the group of victims included three other SBHS alumni: Hugh James McCaffrey ‘49; Harold Herbert Mackie, Jr. ‘44; and Loren Dale Howell ‘46. After the Marie’s disappearance, Teresa and the other fatherless children grew up and the details about the story were buried.

Teresa first began her journey into uncovering the truth about the Marie while living near Pearl Harbor, when she received a dusty scrapbook of her grandmother’s filled with coast-to-coast news articles of the shipwreck. Teresa’s research into her father’s loss began by asking what she believed was a simple question. What happened? Yet, she failed to realize the Goliath she stood before – giant issues that threatened to overwhelm her many times. Through an abundance of relationships, collective memories, and a crumbling wall of secrecy, part of the story began to surface. And this book guides you through her journey of discovery. In 1982 the Marie tragedy was recognized as one of the one hundred most newsworthy stories of the 20th century in the Santa Barbara News-Press. Teresa’s efforts resulted in the recognition of The Marie Tragedy as a Cold War timeline event by the Cold War Museum in 2010. Teresa credits the book to an array of people from coast to coast, stating, “people’s hearts, hands and the USS Razorback made the difference.” Mystery of the Marie is available anywhere where books are sold, including Amazon. Teresa has donated a copy of the book, which will be part of the Alumni Author Shelf collection housed in the SBHS Library. Teresa is the niece of Al Terres ’53 and past SBHSAA president, Lynda Reed Williams Terres ’53. Bud Bottoms, former SBHS Art teacher and father of Timothy ‘69, Joseph ’72, Samuel ’73 and Benjamin ‘79, recently passed away. He is remembered as sculptor of the dolphin fountain at the entry to the wharf, co-founder of GOO (Get Oil Out) the environmental organization that formed after the 1969 SB oil spill and as a strong supporter of the arts in the schools. Please submit your nominations for Wall of Fame and/or Distinguished Alumni candidates. Every class has someone worthy of one of these distinct honors. Please get your nominations in ASAP. Thank you to Cindy Arbelbide ’67 for her extensive research and writing of this article. Senior Morgan LeMelle Becomes First SBHS Student PTSA President

Whatever decade your Santa Barbara High School graduation fell in, forget the Marvel Comics’ “Superheroes” as you knew them. There’s a real-life superhero in the Class of 2019. Called a “History Maker” in a News-Press story last August, Morgan LeMelle ’19 is not only the first student elected President of the school’s Parent Teacher Student Association, but his next-to-last semester schedule also bears little if any resemblance to anything most alumni have ever seen. LeMelle (last "e" silent) delayed responding to an interview request, but his explanation was totally-acceptable. “You reached out,” he said, “during … probably my busiest week of the entire year (first PTSA meeting, Back To School Night)… also taking 5 Advanced Placement classes (with a zero period) and a night class at Santa Barbara City College.” Even if one doesn’t know that “zero period” is one held before the regular school day starts, imagine the time and effort LeMelle needs; it’s a marvel (no pun intended) he agreed to the interview. Son of Daniel and Tammy LeMelle, both long employed in the entertainment industry, Morgan presided over his first PTSA meeting on Sept. 10 and faced a “larger-than-expected audience of 60 or so.” It included only two other students, one of them the new Associated Student Body President. His initial agenda, with the next meeting not until mid-January, covered such diverse items as the ongoing fall fundraiser; the student store with its new parent supervisor; sale of Axxess coupon books with their myriad local discounts; and the Reflections Art Contest. Also included on the agenda were five speakers, three from school staff and two from outside agencies. Even prior to the meeting, Morgan dealt with the renaming of the “Future Wish List” to “Learning Enrichment Program.” Its budget this year? $14,000, a significant portion of the organization’s budget total of $41,000. “We want the newly-named LEP to consider field trip funding applications and even requests for new programs,” Morgan explained. Overall, it was quite a beginning for this young man who aspires one day to become our country’s Secretary of State. Don’t bet against him. Thank you to Bob Wakefield ’48 for this interview and submission.
