2018 WALL OF FAME RECIPIENTS

Lawrence C. Lane ‘30, (awarded posthumously and accepted by his sons John and Lawrence Lane ‘60), Martha Grace Duncan ‘63, Victor Bartolome ‘66, Rose Marie Cruz ‘56 and Payne Green ‘51

Wall of Fame Honorees Address Students Every year for the past 18 years, students from the Leadership Class and the SBHS Alumni Association Board have come together to elect five exemplary alumni to be inducted on the Wall of Fame. They are recognized for their outstanding contributions in the arts, athletics, business, education, sciences, or community service. This year’s Dons spoke to students, family, friends, and classmates at an afternoon assembly. Their messages to our students were heartfelt, attributing their success to SBHS, naming specific teachers, and sharing special moments from their careers. This year’s honorees are Lawrence C. Lane ‘30, Payne Green ’51, Rose Marie Cruz ’56, Martha Grace Duncan ’63 and Victor Bartolome ’66. Lawrence Lane’s ’30 award was presented posthumously to his two sons. Lawrence was a trailblazer in the farming community of Goleta, starting with his family’s Lane Farms. Active in the Goleta Union School Board, Goleta Water District and Goleta Sanitary District, he was named Goleta Man of the year in 1960. An alumnus of UCLA, Lawrence’s whirlwind of community service started at SBHS as Senior Class President and a member of the first football team known as the Golden Tornado. Payne Green ’51 was a 3-sport varsity athlete, holding a still unbroken record in the decathlon. At Ventura Junior College he continued with football, basketball and track, breaking track records there as well. Payne was a familiar face in Santa Barbara while serving as a SB Police Officer for 28 years, working on the SWAT Team and returning to SBHS as a Resource Officer. In 2010 he was inducted into the SBHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

Rose Marie Cruz ’56 Synonymous with Old Spanish Days Fiesta, Rose Marie has dedicated her life’s passion to the joy of Spanish dance. Starting with famous Jose’ Manero, became professional in the 1960’s, studied in Mexico and Spain and is the founder and director of Cruz Dance and Entertainment, voted Santa Barbara’s Best Dance Studio by the SB Independent. She has mentored many of our SBHS students, been a USA Pageant judge and is known in the dance community as a phenomenal choreographer and master teacher. At SBHS, she was in theater productions, drill team and a majorette. Martha Grace Duncan ’63 The Valedictorian of her SBHS class, Martha won an Occidental International Fellowship to do research on an opposition political party in Bogota’, Colombia. She later won a fellowship from the Latin American Institute of Columbia University to research peasant movements in Northeast Brazil, after having written about this same region in high school! She earned her Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia and her law degree from Yale Law School. At Emory University School of Law where she is a professor, she specializes in criminal law and has been awarded Distinguished Teaching Award and Professor of the Year. Victor Bartolome’ ’66 At 6’11”, Victor was the tallest Don to have competed for SBHS, setting a SBHS single-game scoring record of 44 points. He was selected for the San Francisco Golden State Warriors in the 1970 NBA draft, played in Italy for Libertas Livorno and then joined the Warriors for their ’71-’72 season. In 1978 he played the leading role in his Netherlands Parker Leiden team’s victory at the first Dutch National Championship.

Principal’s Letter - John Becchio

President’s Letter - Tim Putz ‘63, President Hi Alumni and Friends,

Hello SBHS Alumni,

Spring is here in beautiful Santa Barbara. December brought the largest most disastrous fire in California history, followed up in January by the Montecito debris event for that small community. Many of our students and alumni were affected by this devastating event. Thank you to all alumni who donated to our gift card fund for affected students and alumni (see article). As of this writing, our area has entered another year of drought, but we are looking forward to our upcoming annual spring meeting and BBQ on May 19th at lower Manning Park. This year there will be another record amount of scholarships awarded to our deserving students. Our website team is constantly updating the site with information, photos and the all-important reunions and dates.

We have been through some very trying times as a school since early December, with the Thomas Fire and Montecito Mudslides impacting a large portion of our school community. I want to thank all of you who supported our gift card drive effort to help our SBHS families who were displaced and out of work due to these disasters. It is times like this that I value so much the support that we receive from those of you who love our school so much. Things are slowly getting back to normal as we work through the lingering issues our families are experiencing in the aftermath of such a tough two months. I wanted to report to all of you that I have accepted a new position in the Santa Barbara Unified School District. I will begin July 1, 2018 as the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. I have spent the last seven years at SBHS and have such a profound love for this school. However, one of my deep professional interests is in the work of human resources and it was an opportunity that I could not pass up. No doubt, I will miss Santa Barbara High School, but I will only be working a few blocks away. I am thankful that I had the great fortune of serving as the principal of such a historic institution, and what I realize through my time here is that it is the people through the years that make it such an historic place. I am grateful to have had a spot on that timeline.

Our continuing Classroom Assistance Program (CAP) helps our teachers procure supplies, products, or other items for their classroom which the district is unable to supply for the instruction of students. Your association has started a “Walk Down the Hill Fund” for seniors in need of assistance, sponsored several early morning continental breakfasts for teachers and staff in our alumni room. In closing, I would like to encourage all alumni to consider gifting your class any amount for our fabulous seniors and scholarships. You can view our active scholarships on the website http:// www.sbdonsalumni.com/scholarships/active-scholarships-available/

Once again, I thank you for your continued interest and commitment you show for our great school. I remain grateful to lead our school community for a few more months and appreciate your participation in the SBHS Alumni Association.

“Once a Don, always a Don”.

Go Dons!

Tim Putz ’63, SBHSAA President

Your Principal, John Becchio

The SBHS Alumni Association Board wants to thank Dr. John Becchio for the past 7 years of collaboration and support. We wish him all the best as he transitions to a new path in his career in education. We will miss him and his enthusiastic leadership tremendously, but we look forward to having him back on campus as a parent. Although John is not an alum, he hails from an extended family of alumni and he upheld his SBHS “family’s” traditions as a true Don. Thank you, John.

2018 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI—JOHN D. KAY ‘53 Dr. John Kay ‘53, a first generation American of Scottish parents was born in Rhode Island and moved to Santa Barbara at the age of seven. He attended Roosevelt Elementary School and La Cumbre Junior High School and graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1953 where he was involved in basketball, track and Jr. Statesmen of America. He attended UCSB where he earned a B.A., M.A. and PH.D. A member of the political science faculty at Santa Barbara City College for 42 years, Dr. Kay was also an adjunct political science lecturer at UC Santa Barbara. In 1983 he received a Fulbright Scholarship to study and travel in India and was selected as SBCC’s Annual Faculty Lecturer for 1983-84. In 2007, Dr. Kay received the Hayward Award for “excellence in education”, the highest California Community College faculty honor. He is past president of SBCC’s Academic Senate and Instructors’ Association. He has directed or co-directed nine SBCC Semester Abroad programs in England, China and Vietnam. Dr. Kay’s broader service includes a mayoral appointment to chair a City of Santa Barbara Task Force on Electoral Reform, a gubernatorial appointment to a commission investigating the feasibility of splitting SB County on the SB County Schools Personnel Commission. He is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was attached to the 425th Civil Affairs Company in Santa Barbara from 1965 to 1985. Dr. Kay lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Edith, a retired teacher. Their daughters, Helen and Mary, were born in Santa Barbara and are SBHS alumnae. John is currently president of the UCSB Affiliates and was appointed to the UC Santa Barbara Foundation in 2015. The SBHS Alumni Association is proud and honored to award Dr. John Kay this Distinguished Alumnus award. Annual Meeting and Scholarship BBQ-May 19th

SANTA BARBARA DONS ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME 2017-2018

It is that time of year again when we come together to honor our student scholarship recipients and Distinguished Alumnus. It is also the annual meeting of the SBHS Alumni Association when we present our slate of board members who are up for election or reelection. This is your chance to affirm your ties to SBHS, socialize with alumni of all ages and celebrate our scholarship winners and Dr. Kay ’53.

Renowned for its athletic excellence, successful teams, outstanding players, exemplary coaches, steeped in longstanding traditions, unabashed school spirit, deep-rooted pride, and admirable sportsmanship, it is only fitting the Santa Barbara Athletics Hall of Fame was created to recognize and honor Santa Barbra High’s athletic legacy of achievements.

Tickets to the BBQ are $20 and are available for purchase by mail or on campus in the Principal’s Office. Make checks payable to SBHS Alumni Association and mail to PO Box 6121, SB, CA 93160-6121. Your ticket(s) will be held at the check-in table at lower Manning Park starting at 11am. Lunch will be served at noon.

The establishment of the Hall of Fame was years in the making and the culmination of a dream for the 43-year old group, Ye Ole Gang. Established in 1974, the Ye Ole Gang began as a backyard barbecue with six people and now has 600 attendees who come together each year to honor those worthy of Dons Hall of Fame status.

If you wish to pay for the lunch of one of our student recipients, it is very much appreciated. Please make a note of the number of student tickets you wish to underwrite. Students are always made aware that an alum has purchased their meal. Thank you from the association. New Scholarship Named for Past Association President The Lynn T. Hammock Alderman Burtness ‘56 Scholarship has been formed in memory of one of our illustrious past SBHS Alumni Association presidents. Lynn was very active with her class reunions and in her memory, the Class of 1956 initiated this scholarship. Her husband and fellow classmate, Bob Burtness ’56 will annually underwrite this scholarship. Lynn’s daughters, Janet Alderman Zahuta ‘81 and Laurie Alderman Bunnell ‘84 are both alums, as was their late father, Robert W. Alderman ’52. Photo by Priscilla

PEABODY STADIUM TAKES SHAPE Photos below show the slow but steady progress of Peabody Stadium. It is the future field of the “Dons”. Completion is for the late spring of 2019.

The 2018 Graduation will be held in the Santa Barbara Bowl. The 2018 grads will be invited to walk down the hill with the Class of 2019 as alums.

Walk Down the Hill Fund A new permanent fund has been established by your Alumni Association Board, which we believe and hope you will wholeheartedly support. It was brought to our attention by Principal Becchio and Assistant Principal Carson that a sizeable number of graduating Dons cannot afford the cost of graduation activities which are so much a part of the high school experience. Most striking is that some of our students need help purchasing their graduation gown. The request from administration for us to help with the purchase of up to 150 gowns (students will purchase their cap and then may keep it) was heard by the board. The gowns will be maintained, stored and available for loan to graduating seniors. We intend for this to be a permanent fund for alums so that the SBHS Administration may request monies from it to defray the costs of graduation, prom, and eventually O & Gs for students in need of assistance. We all remember the thrill of our walk down the hill and want all Dons to have that same experience. We are asking for you to think back your graduation day and support this very worthy cause. Donations may be sent to SBHS Alumni Association, PO Box 6121, SB, CA 93160-6121 with memo note of Walk Down the Hill Fund. Olive and Gold Express to Benefit CAP

Would you like a piece of Peabody Stadium?

Please join fellow Dons from all classes to ride the historic SILVER SPLENDOR 1956 Vista-Dome private rail car from SB to SLO on May 26th. Due to the Thomas Fire and subsequent Montecito mud slide which covered and disabled the train tracks, our December ride was changed to this spring. Entertainment by fellow Dons, lunch, dessert, wine, and beverages are included along the way.

You asked, we listened! Half of Peabody Stadium lives on in various board members’garages and in our alumni room. If you would like to have a piece of the stadium, please contact us at sbhsalumniassoc@gmail.com and we will arrange for pick up or shipping. We hand selected each piece with olive and gold paint from the cheering section. They come with an olive and gold bow and tag. Any generous donation for your piece of Peabody will.be accepted! The rock pictured here is one we mounted for display in the alumni room.

There will also be time for a short visit to the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum before we return to Santa Barbara. All this fun awaits you for $130, of which a portion will benefit the SBHS Classroom Assistance Program which funds classroom materials. There are a few seats left. SBHS Family Hit Hard by Fire and Montecito Mudslide Students, staff, faculty, and alumni of Santa Barbara High School comprise one big extended Olive and Gold family. Over two hundred members of our SBHS family were impacted by the recent Thomas fire and Montecito mudslide, suffering painful loses and devastating hardships in a diversity of ways including loss of lives, property, jobs, businesses, and possessions. In the aftermath of this disastrous event, our Don family and campus community have come together in the true spirit of Once a Don, Always a Don, demonstrating strength and resiliency and offering financial assistance and emotional support. Thank you for your kind donations to our fund for students and alumni. With your generous donations, we were able to purchase gift cards to local restaurants and stores and they have been disseminated to alumni who have lost so much. We will keep the fund open if you still wish to donate. The deaths of a current student and two alumni saddened our Don family. Jack Cantin was a junior in the Multi-Media Arts & Design (MAD) Academy. He was active in the Boy Scouts, having earned its highest rank, the Eagle Scout Award and co-founded Teens on the Scene, a teen-led community service and leadership group in Santa Barbara. Jack will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, genuineness, intellectual curiosity, and his ability to inspire others. The Old Mission was brimming with students, family and community members who fondly memorialized this young Don. Pinit “Oom” Sutthithepa, who immigrated to the United States from Thailand at 15 years old, graduated from SBHS in 2008. He was a devoted family man who was full of life and loved his family. A dedicated three-year employee at Toyota of Santa Barbara he was described as genuine, respectful, honest, and hardworking with an unforgettable smile. Richard Loring Taylor graduated from Santa Barbara High in 1955 before attending UCSB where he eventually obtained his PhD in English literature. After a long and successful teaching career which included stints overseas and extensive world travels and adventures, Loring retired to his property in Montecito reading books, caring for his family, telling stories, and making friends wherever he went. He will be remembered for being an unconventional, adventurous, inquisitive, and generous man. The SBHS Alumni Association sends our heartfelt condolences to the families of these Dons and to our other alumni who lost a parent and a child. One of the many moving stories of how Santa Barbarans swiftly came to the aide of our Montecito community, is that of one of our alumni, Abe Powell ’87. When Abe awoke to flood destruction and the mud debris flow, he knew he had to do something. In short order he had 70 people who reacted to his Facebook post and showed up with shovels and buckets to help our community dig out. The now well-known Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade was born, and every weekend since January 28th, Bucket Brigade volunteers have continued to give back to our Montecito community. It was recently announced that talk show host and Montecito resident, Ellen DeGeneres, selected Abe’s Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade to receive $20,000.00 to help fund shovels, buckets, masks, goggles, gloves, and hazmat coveralls. Thank you, Abe, you are a true Don.

World War I Alumni to be Remembered This November we will observe the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, which ended World War I. We have six Dons on our memorial rock near the JR Richards Gymnasium and we have discovered one more alumnus whose name should be included. David Barry ’10, William D. Compton ’16, George E. Sangster ’20, Howard Shoaf ’17, Albert E. Stafford ’07, and Herold J. Webster ’16 are listed on the memorial. Merlyn Duffey ’17 should have been included and we intend to formally add his name. The Class of 1923 gifted SBHS with a photo of these 7 men who gave their lives. The photograph hangs in the Principal’s office. Thank you to John Campilio ‘53 who is planning a special anniversary ceremony for our alumni who lost their lives in the various wars. The ceremony is planned for November.

ALUMNI AUTHOR SHELF GROWS Recent additions to our library collection and list of Alumni Authors are many. Please check the Alumni Author list on our website, www.sbhsdonsalumni.com. If you are an author, please let us know. We would love to add your book, script etc. to our collection in the library so that the works of our Dons will inspire students. In addition, our author researcher extraordinaire, Bob Wakefield ’48, offers the following story of interest to SBHS alumni. With the success that our alumni association has had in building its author’s list and its collection of books written by Don graduates, works by other authors shouldn’t be overlooked. For that reason, two “growing-up” books should be of interest to many alums. Between them, they cover young people’s lives in Santa Barbara from the 1930s into the 1970s. That means a lot of Dons and their families should find the narratives full of familiar names, places and events. A look at the first book, Home of the Wilson Wildcats, will produce a locally-revered name in author Frank Van Schaick. The longtime teacher, then principal at Wilson Elementary School chronicles his life in his adopted city and with thousands of “adopted” children. Those kids included not just those in the now-defunct Wilson School, but also those who engaged nature in Camp Conestoga, an outdoor activity that Van Schaick developed. Andy Bisaccia, author of the other book, Hannibal by the Sea, also emphasized the outdoors as he grew up from the 1930s until he graduated from Santa Barbara Catholic High School in the mid-1940s. “Hannibal,” of course, is the Missouri city along the Mississippi River that Mark Twain made famous in his stories about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Bisaccia felt that SB bestowed the same type of childhood on him and his friends. Like Van Schaick, Bisaccia was a teacher. His career evolved in the Ojai area. Both books were published in the 1990s, run well over 350 pages and are in paperback editions.

June Lane Christensen, Beloved Dance Teacher Passes—6/26/26-9/5/17 June Lane Christensen was known to thousands of students over her 59-year teaching career in Santa Barbara. In 1954 she started teaching modern dance at SBHS. She was choreographer for many school musicals and summer programs through Youth Theatre Productions and inspired many future professional performers and teachers. Alonzo King ’69 of Lines Ballet San Francisco gave her credit for introducing him to dance and his future as a dancer, choreographer and artistic director and June Lane returned the favor when Alonzo went up on the Wall of Fame in 2014 by speaking about her former student. Her career at SBHS ran from 1954-1981 and during her last three years at SBHS, June created an alternative Learning Center for students at risk. June was born in Oakland, California and remembered seeing Isadora Duncan perform on the streets of Oakland which ignited her desire to become a dancer. She fulfilled her goal by studying at Black Mountain College in North Carolina with Merce Cunningham and then continued her career in New York City where she danced with Martha Graham’ 13 -- also a SBHS Don! Her 27-year career at SBHS inspired many young members of her dance classes to continue in dance. They became teachers, dancers, and, most especially, audience members and enthusiasts of Modern Dance! June did her best (and it was very good) to build dance audiences by exposing her students to dance companies at The Lobero Theatre. "I'd be lucky if 100 people showed up. Now I attend the extraordinary line up of UCSB Arts & Lectures Dance Companies.... It brings tears to my eyes to see auditoriums packed full...!" Her impact on her students is best described by Alonzo King: "The first time I looked in on her dance class I was struck by her gargantuan enthusiasm. She was loving what she was doing. She was steadily teaching but zoomed right into my eyes and her face smiled welcome.... In ancient cultures teachers and farmers were lauded as high positions in the community. Teachers nurtured souls and revealed life's meanings." All of us who were instructed and welcomed into the rigor and joy of modern dance by June Lane Christensen are grateful and honor her as one Santa Barbara High School's great teachers! June is survived by her children Katherine ‘71 and Nathan ‘74.

Wall of Famer, John Floyd Gilbert ‘61, Passes—12/16/1942-10/28/2017 John Floyd Gilbert, aka, "The Gil", was active in sports and spent much of his free time at the Eastside Boys Club. His stellar career in sports at SBHS included leading the 1960 SB Dons, Golden Tornadoes, football team to the CIF Championship. He also ran track and in both 1960 and 1961, John Gilbert was MVP in track and in 1960 received the Sam Cathcart Outstanding Athletic Performance award for the 100 Yard Dash 9.6 - 3rd in the State Meet. He went on to play college football at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM. After hanging up his football cleats, he put his track spikes back on and didn't stop running until he reached the world stage. He was invited to join the National Striders Track Club and represented team USA all over the world. Small in stature, (5'5"), John was loaded with talent. Bob Hayes was clocked as the fastest man in the world, running the 100-yard dash in 9.1 seconds with John on his heels at 9.2 seconds! His contributions to the Santa Barbara and Santa Maria communities were many and he pursued them with vigor. He became a barber (Johnny's Barbershop on Anacapa Street), continued his education at UCSB, worked at InDyne, Inc. and retired in 2008. He was active in his church and continued to coach students. His honors include Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame, a spot on the Dons Wall of Fame (2017), and Ye Olde Gang Inductee.

Gilbert Ramirez ‘43 Condolences to the family of Gilbert Ramirez’43 who was fatally hit by a car on State Street. Gil entered WWII before graduation and 68 years later walked down the hill with other veterans and the class of 2013. As a loyal Don, he was thrilled with donning a cap and gown and leading the graduates into Peabody Stadium.

George Rempe George Rempe, who volunteered for 30 years as the hitting coach for the SBHS baseball team passed away in January. A retired attorney, George stopped coaching for the Dons when Fred Warrecker retired in 2015. George was known for organizing and supervising the team’s Saturday batting practices at Eddie Mathews Field. The batting cages at the field are named in his honor. He was fondly remembered for often using stories, sayings, and nuggets of wisdom that he had picked up along the way and weaved them into teachable moments for the players.

ALL-CLASS REUNION WEEKEND

Can you imagine Dons of all ages coming together in one place? What a party that would be! We are looking for alums to help us plan such a party for around the time of the opening of new Peabody Stadium in 2019.

For fourteen years he was a four-medium exhibitor in the Arts & Craft show. Owen has researched and published three books on his family genealogy and is the webmaster of the family website. His world travels have taken him to 14 countries, 96 Islands and all but two of the states. On the 2nd of his 9 visits to the Fiji Islands he was made an adopted Fijian by a village chief.

Please join us for a preliminary planning meeting scheduled for Saturday, June 2 at 3:00 in the Olive and Gold Alumni Room in the main hall at SBHS. Bring your ideas and Dons spirit. Please RSVP to Sharon Henning at SBHSalumniassoc@gmail.com

Now at 92 he is like the Energizer Bunny, “he is still going”.
