CLASS OF 2019 GRADUATION

The class of 2019 was the 144th to graduate from Santa Barbara High School. They made graduation history this past June when they distinguished themselves as the second class to graduate from the SB County Bowl. It was a lovely ceremony in a beautiful setting, however students lamented not having their traditional walk “down the hill.” Seating was limited in the Bowl and students were assigned a set number of tickets. Peabody Stadium will be ready for the class of 2020.

President’s Letter - By Tim Putz‘63

Hello Alumni,

Hi Alumni and Friends, Our annual meeting and scholarship awards were held this year on May 19. The venue changed from the BBQ at Manning Park to our theater at SBHS, thus saving family members the cost of the BBQ. It was an overwhelming success. The theater had several hundred parents, family members and alumni in attendance. Over 50 graduating seniors received scholarships this year, and graduate and continuing college students received scholarships as well. We will probably continue to hold this event at the school. The class of 2019 was the 144th to graduate in our school’s history. For the second year, graduation was held at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. Peabody Stadium’s construction schedule is behind as a result of our wet spring weather. The latest news is that Peabody Stadium should be ready by November of this year. Mark your calendar for the first ever “ALL DONS REUNION” on October 5 from 11 am to 4 pm. This is for all classes! There will be student-led school tours, a homecoming parade on Milpas Street, memorabilia tables, a silent auction, and Dons and Alumni items for purchase. Please join us and find fellow Dons, teachers and friends with whom to reminisce about your days at one of America’s most beautiful high schools. There will also be some of the finest food trucks in the county serving hot dogs, burgers, tacos, churros and more… This event promises to be a big success. (See below for more information.) “Once a Don, Always a Don” Tim Putz ’63 SBHSAA President

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year. As I reflect back on my first year as the ever proud principal of Santa Barbara High School, I am grateful for the care and support that we receive from the thousands of Alumni, both local and distant. Frequently, often daily, I meet a proud Don, eager to share their high school experiences and memories. Being an Alumni of SBHS is much more than the wonderful four years spent together, it is the decades of friendships and connections that continue after graduation. Over the summer, the Peabody Stadium renovation project has been active and moving forward towards completion. It is easy to become disheartened by the constant moving of the completion date. However, when you get the chance to see it in person, you can’t deny the complexity of the project and can begin to see how impressive and grand the finished Peabody Stadium will be for our community. With that being said, I hope you join us at the first ever ALL Don Reunion on Saturday, October 5th. You will get to see the project in person, the view from above is awesome. Did you know that over the past 8 months another construction project was underway? As a student, did you ever hear about the Boiler Room in the basement? Well, SBHS is now in the 21st century with an updated heating system for the main building, the 20/30s wings, and JR Richards Gym. Many of the students and staff are looking forward to having a proper heating system this upcoming winter. This school year we welcome 581 new 9th graders and their families. And, we are proud to say that we are again the largest high school in town with over 2250 students. Santa Barbara High School is ready for the new school year, our 145th year being the most excellent high school. We want to thank you for all of your support of students and our programs. Go Dons! Elise Simmons , E.D., Principal
