DIRECTOR’S LETTER

2026: Creating Community, Building Fun, Growing Together

Santa Cruz has a lot to celebrate in 2026, our history, our parks, and the people who bring them to life.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum and 141 years since the first documented mainland surf session by three Hawaiian princes at the San Lorenzo Rivermouth. Their spirit of adventure and connection lives on in our community, and the He’e Nalu Santa Cruz exhibit at the MAH is a perfect reminder of this incredible story.

Behind the scenes, our Parks & Recreation team has been busy planning for the future. In 2025, we completed the San Lorenzo Park and Harvey West Park redesign plans and advanced the Wharf Master Plan. We also conducted our first-ever facility condition assessment, giving us a clear picture of our parks, facilities, and infrastructure, including deferred maintenance to guide our parks and facilities priorities moving forward.

CITY ADMINISTRATION

Matt Huffaker | City Manager

Our parks aren’t just about space. They’re about programs, events, and activities for all ages that spark joy, foster connection, and create lasting memories. Looking ahead, 2026 promises new spaces, revitalized parks, and opportunities for everyone to explore, play, and try something new.

Of course, we couldn’t resist highlighting this amazing photo from Native Santa Cruz, capturing the natural beauty and unique lifestyle of our city. Families laughing, enjoying our coast, and making memories at Lighthouse Point Park and the Santa Cruz Lighthouse and Surf Museum is proof that Santa Cruz parks are alive with the spirit of fun, connection, and unforgettable memories!

Here’s to another year of creating community, building fun, and growing together. We can’t wait to see you at a recreation program, a community event, out in the parks, on the trails, or maybe even riding a wave or two!

DEPARTMENT LEADERSHIP

Tony Elliot | Director of Parks & Recreation

Michelle Templeton | Assistant City Manager

Erika Smart | Communications Manager

Bonnie Lipscomb | Deputy City Manager

Tremain Hedden-Jones | Superintendent of Recreation

The Original Surf City

Santa Cruz is the birthplace of surfing in North America, and the original “Surf City.” Although historical evidence clearly documents its 1885 arrival and local adoption by 1896. In the summer of 1885 three Hawaiian Princes, David Kawananakoa, Edward Keli’iahonui and Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole introduced surfing to the world beyond Hawaii. They rode Santa Cruz waves. Crafted surfboards from our redwood lumber. The impact of their stay rippled from coast to coast and shaped the cultural identity of Santa Cruz County

World Surfing Reserve, Est. 2012

The World Surfing Reserve (WSR) identifies, designates, and preserves outstanding waves, surf zones and their surrounding environments, around the world.
