Friends of Parks and Recreation (FOPAR) provides partial scholarships for youth from limited-income families residing within the City of Santa Cruz. Scholarship applicants must be below the average median income for Santa Cruz County ($102,032). Interested Santa Cruz City residents (proof of residency is required) may pick up scholarship applications at the Parks and Recreation Office, 323 Church Street or obtain them online at cityofsantacruz.com/ scholarships
If your child receives a scholarship, a credit will be applied to your Parks and Recreation account for the amount awarded. You will be responsible for registering your child in the program(s) online, in person or by phone at 831-420 -5270.

Camp Cruz is our largest and most versatile camp. With all day to spend together, Camp Cruz provides a wide variety of session-themed games, arts, crafts, and field trips (both local and out of county). This camp continues to evolve! Days at The Spot are full of creativity, fun and adventure with an excellent mix of high energy atmosphere and mellow activities to satisfy everyone. Captain Corp volunteers function as role models for Junior and Little Guards participants and assist instructors with marine safety through participation, education and creating a positive learning environment.
Applicants MUST register and pay in their appropriate age group for Junior Guards (A’s or AA’s). Successful candidates will receive a refund if selected as a Captain Corps I.

Santa Cruz City Lifeguards are on duty Memorial Day through Labor Day, from 10am–6pm, as well as pre/post season weekend service depending on local weather conditions.
Santa Cruz City Lifeguards provide coverage from Cowell Beach to the San Lorenzo River, as well as city-wide for aquatic emergencies.
The City of Santa Cruz provides an accessibility ramp on Cowell Beach for persons with limited mobility, wheelchairs and strollers. There is one beach wheelchair available for use on a first come first served basis during business hours. It is kept at Lifeguard Headquarters or on Cowell Beach at Lifeguard Tower #1.

Young Artists will visit artists in their studios, sketch and learn about the San Lorenzo River and plant habitat, learn to make paint from natural sources, create large sidewalk murals, build sculptures and mandalas from natural “findings,” learn observational drawing techniques with real animal specimens, and more! Our small group robotics courses for kids, including all of our Vex robotics classes, are designed with students in mind by Apple and Stanford experts. This Vex robotics virtual world class teaches students how coding is used in robotics through fun, hands-on projects. Students will learn how to navigate robots through a virtual environment and gain a deeper understanding of how robots can be used to solve problems through many real-world examples.

Micro:Bit coding is the perfect fit if your child is interested in electronics or if they want to build robots or rockets one day. This little device packs very powerful capabilities: LED lights, speakers, a temperature sensor, a microphone, and even an accelerometer. Coding is done in simulator that works just like the physical Micro:Bit. You don’t need the physical device to take the class.
Technical Requirements: Students must have a laptop or desktop device with Zoom, a Chrome browser, and high internet connection. For best results, students need to be familiar with block-based coding (equivalent level as Scratch Ninja 2) before taking this class.

This course is a great next step for kids who have mastered Scratch and would like to continue to learn more advanced coding.
Technical Requirements: Students must have a laptop or desktop with Zoom, a Chrome browser, and high internet connectivity. Student is familiar with Scratch, with at least 20 hours of Scratch coding experience or completed Create & Learn Scratch Ninja I and II classes. Join us on a FREE tour of the city’s significant and historical trees in the downtown area! Be guided by the City Urban Forester, Leslie Keedy, as she takes you down a meandering path of foliage, fruit and flowers, in this annual tour of the city’s urban forest and gardens. Over 25 fabulous & unique trees will be showcased and discussed on the walking tour. Come learn about how they grow, their unique characteristics and all about their genus, species & family! Advance registration is required. Please wear comfortable walking/ hiking shoes, bring water and hats. The walk is approximately a 1-mile loop. An informative, color handout with a map is provided to all participants. Please meet promptly at 9:00am at the City Hall Courtyard, in front of the City Manager’s/ Mayor’s Office located by the fountain that is across from the Public Library. All ages are welcome. An extension of the Walking Adventure Group, this group will take a leisurely tour of a different area each week. The intention of the group is to get outside, move our body, connect with each other and nature. These walks are slower paced and on even terrain.

The Walking Adventure Group focuses on getting active seniors together for outdoor activity, exploration, learning and community. Our goal is to explore as many different areas as possible and partner with rangers, docents and local professionals to enrich our learning and understanding of the areas and habitats we visit.

As part of Community Bridges, our mission is to deliver essential services, provide equitable access to resources, and advocate for health and dignity across every stage of life. Nueva Vista (711 East Cliff Drive) serves the community as a family resource center. Nueva Vista at 133 Leibrandt Avenue (Beach Flats Community Center) focuses on helping youth achieve academic success by providing much needed programs for historically underrepresented youth in Kindergarden-High School. This center is located in the heart of the largely low-income, predominantly Latinx neighborhood of Beach Flats in Santa Cruz.

Age level indicates the age the participant must be on the first day of class.
When a registrant withdraws from a class, the following options are available:
Four (4) business days or more prior to the first class meeting:
1. TRANSFER to another Parks & Recreation activity with a $5 transfer fee.
2. WITHDRAW and receive a credit to your Parks & Recreation account with a $5 processing fee per participant, per class.
3. WITHDRAW AND REFUND of class fee with a $20 processing fee.
Three (3) business days or less prior to the course start date, no refunds, credits or transfers will be given.
Ten (10) business days after registration, no refunds or adjustments for household account updated to City resident status.
Business days are defined as Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm, excluding City holidays.
Credit balances can be used for all classes or facility reservations.
Please allow up to 5 weeks to receive a refund check in the mail.
Outdoor class cancellations due to inclement weather may receive either an account credit prorated for the missed class or a makeup session at the discretion of the class instructor and department. Credits and/or makeup sessions will not be applied to the household account until after the last day of the scheduled class. Classes are subject to cancellation due to low enrollments (Ex: Not meeting the minimum enrollment set by the instructor).
