Enhancing Quality of Life Through Park Improvements
Exciting Upgrades Coming to Grant Street Park This Summer!
Get ready for a summer of transformation at Grant Street Park! Beginning mid-August to September, the playground and park amenities will undergo a major renovation— bringing fun, inclusivity, and improved features for the whole community.
The redesigned playground will feature dynamic play zones for all ages and abilities—from ground-level accessible components to elevated climbing structures that inspire creativity, movement, and imagination. These inclusive features will ensure that every child, regardless of ability, has a chance to explore, engage, and play together.
Beyond the playground, park-wide enhancements will create a more welcoming and functional space for everyone. New outdoor ping pong and cornhole games will offer opportunities for social connection and healthy
competition, while a new tetherball area brings a nostalgic favorite to a new generation. Upgraded picnic areas with modern BBQs and seating will make it easier for families, friends, and neighbors to gather and enjoy time outdoors.
Refreshed restrooms, new recycling and waste stations, and an improved off-leash dog area show our commitment to sustainability, comfort, and community care. These improvements are not just about recreation—they’re about building a stronger, more connected neighborhood.
By investing in Grant Street Park, we’re creating a vibrant hub for wellness, inclusion, and community pride.
Stay tuned for a ribbon-cutting celebration in August and join us in welcoming a new era of play and togetherness in Santa Cruz!
DIRECTOR’S LETTER
Hello and happy autumn, Santa Cruz!
It’s a privilege to present the Fall 2025 edition of the Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Activity Guide. We invite you to explore the wide range of classes, events, and activities for all ages, and to enjoy the incredible park system that makes our city so special.
Still, we remain committed. Thanks to support from the Community Foundation and the passage of Measure Q, we’re building new momentum for long-term forest and parkland care. We’re also looking for community partners who share our passion and want to help grow Santa Cruz’s urban forest.
This season, we’re highlighting one of our most vital and sometimes overlooked resources: trees. Our urban forest—nearly 14,000 trees strong—adds beauty to neighborhoods, provides critical habitat, and helps clean the air we breathe. With 227 unique species across the city, these trees play an essential role in both our environment and quality of life.
Urban Forestry is a key part of our department, guided by the City’s 2030 Climate Action Plan, the Parks Master Plan, and the Street Tree Master Plan. Together, these efforts shape how we protect, expand, and care for our forest canopy. While we’re proud that tree coverage in Santa Cruz has steadily increased—from 36.4% in 2009 to nearly 39% in 2021—we face challenges too. This year, a $1 million federal grant for tree planting was unexpectedly revoked, and our Urban Forestry team continues to operate with limited staff.
Trees are more than just a landscape feature—they are the lungs of our city. As the Street Tree Master Plan reminds us, they offer environmental, social, and economic benefits that directly enhance our sustainability and quality of life.
Let’s work together to care for and protect this valuable resource.
Stay connected with us this season—online, on social media, or in person at 323 Church Street.
See you in the parks!

The Original Surf City
Santa Cruz is the birthplace of surfing in North America, and the original “Surf City.” Although historical evidence clearly documents its 1885 arrival and local adoption by 1896. In the summer of 1885 three Hawaiian Princes, David Kawananakoa, Edward Keli’iahonui and Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole introduced surfing to the world beyond Hawaii. They rode Santa Cruz waves. Crafted surfboards from our redwood lumber. The impact of their stay rippled from coast to coast and shaped the cultural identity of Santa Cruz County
World Surfing Reserve, Est. 2012
The World Surfing Reserve (WSR) identifies, designates, and preserves outstanding waves, surf zones and their surrounding environments, around the world.
