Elon Musk Departs Trump Administration

New Delhi: Elon Musk has announced the end of his tenure as chief of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), thanking President Trump for the opportunity to help curb wasteful spending. Musk expressed hope that DOGE would evolve into a longterm “way of life” in government operations. His exit follows his first public criticism of Trump’s spending policies. Referring to the President’s “big, beautiful” budget bill, Musk remarked, “A bill can be big, or it can be beautiful. But I don't know if it can be both.” Musk, a major donor to Trump’s 2024 campaign, played a key role in the administration, recruiting “super high-IQ small-government revolutionaries” to streamline federal operations. DOGE aggressively downsized departments and cut tens of thousands from government payrolls, drawing both praise and controversy.

Musk 'disappointed' by Trump's tax and spending bill

Elon Musk has criticised one of the signature policies of Donald Trump, marking a break from the US president who he helped to win re-election in 2024. Last week, the US House of Representatives narrowly passed what Trump calls his "big, beautiful" bill, which includes multi-trillion dollar tax breaks and a pledge to increase defence spending. It will now head to the Senate.

Tech titan Musk told the BBC's US partner CBS News he was "disappointed" by the plan, which he felt "undermines" the work he did for the president on reducing spending. Musk was enlisted as Trump's cost-cutting tsar - ending funds for US foreign aid among other projects - before announcing he would step back.

By April, Musk began distancing himself from DOGE, describing it as a "whipping boy" for public frustration. He admitted falling short of several goals. Legal troubles also mounted, with a federal judge allowing a lawsuit to proceed against Musk over alleged abuse of power and unauthorized access to sensitive data.

Meanwhile, Musk’s business ventures have faced turbulence. Tesla dealerships were recently targeted by arsonists, share prices fell, and SpaceX suffered another Starship test failure, with the vehicle exploding over the Indian Ocean. A two-hour outage on social platform X added to the strain, prompting Musk to admit major operational reforms are needed.

Despite the setbacks, Musk’s departure marks the end of a high-profile, controversial chapter in government reform.

Smugglers jailed for deaths of Indian family in US-Canada border blizzard

Two men have been sentenced for their role in the deaths of a family from India who froze during a blizzard while trying to cross into the US from Canada.

Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel and Steve Anthony Shand were convicted last November of human trafficking, criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

In court in the US state of Minnesota, Patel was sentenced to just over 10 years in prison. Shand was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison.

The custodial terms were about half of what prosecutors had sought.

The bodies of Jagdish Patel, 39, his wife Vaishaliben, 37, and their two children, 11-year-old Vihangi and three-year-old Dharmik, were found in January 2022.

Authorities said the couple, both schoolteachers, and their children were trying to cross into the US when they were caught in a blizzard, with temperatures as low as -38C (-36F). The family had travelled from their home village in the western Indian state of Gujarat to Toronto.

U.S. to Revoke Visas of Chinese Students: Rubio

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday announced that the Trump administration will begin revoking visas of Chinese students, including those with ties to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in “critical fields.” In a post on X, Rubio, said, “The US will begin revoking visas of Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.”

Trump Proposes 15% Limit on 'Troublemaker' Foreign Students

Washington: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday called international students "troublemakers" and suggested a 15 per cent cap should be imposed on the admission of foreign students at Harvard University and other American higher education institutions. Speaking from the Oval Office, the President said he doesn't want "radical people" coming to the United States as students and "making trouble in our country."

U.S. Visa Ban for Foreigners Who "Censor" Americans Online

Washington DC — The United States will impose visa bans on foreign officials who attempt to censor Americans on social media platforms owned by US tech companies, announced Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio condemned foreign officials who issue or threaten arrest warrants against US citizens or residents for posts made on American platforms. He called it "unacceptable" for these officials to demand content removal or moderation from USbased tech firms.

While Rubio did not name specific countries or individuals, he stated that some foreign nationals have taken "flagrant censorship actions" beyond their authority, targeting US tech companies and users.

This move comes amid growing legal actions by European, Asian, Australian, and South American governments, which have imposed penalties or served takedown notices against American social media companies for not complying with local laws.

The new US policy asserts that content posted by Americans within the US cannot be subject to foreign censorship demands.

Carney says he wants Canada to join major European defence plan

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he wants his country to join a major European plan to bolster defences by 1 July.

Speaking to CBC on Tuesday, Carney said he hoped Canada would sign on to ReArm Europe - a plan to dramatically increase defence spending on the continent to in the next five years - in a bid to reduce reliance on the US. "Seventy-five cents of every (Canadian) dollar of capital spending for defence goes to the United States. That's not smart," Carney told the public broadcaster. His remarks come amid tension with the US after threats from President Donald Trump - though Carney has also previously said he is open to joining a missile defence project proposed by Trump.

A day after Carney's remarks, Canada's defence minister told a military trade show that his country wanted to quickly boost defence capacity in the face of growing

UN Rejects IsraelApproved Gaza Aid Plan

A new U.S.-backed aid group, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), has begun food distribution in Gaza despite widespread criticism from the UN and humanitarian agencies. Approved by Israel, GHF’s system shifts aid control from longstanding UN-led operations to centralized hubs guarded by armed contractors, raising fears of food being used as a tool of control. Four such hubs, mostly near Israeli military zones, have been set up, though none in northern Gaza, where much of the population is located.

Aid groups argue this violates humanitarian principles, forces displacement, and makes civilians vulnerable by requiring them to pass through Israeli lines. The UN and others warn the new plan cannot meet Gaza’s needs and risks violating international law. GHF’s former director, Jake Wood, resigned, citing lack of independence.

Israel claims Hamas was diverting aid and wants stricter oversight. GHF says it’s apolitical and aims to reach 2 million people. However, key details about leadership and funding remain unclear, and its 1,750-calorie meals fall below international emergency standards.

The plan follows Israel's limited reopening of aid routes after months-long blockades. Aid groups insist existing UN mechanisms are effective if allowed to function and fear this shift is a step toward forced population transfer.

overrun US-backed group's new aid distribution site in Gaza

Thousands of Palestinians have overrun an aid distribution site in Gaza set up by a controversial US and Israeli-backed group, a day after it began working there. Videos showed crowds walking over torndown fences and earth berms at the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation's (GHF) compound in the southern city of Rafah. The group said that at one point its team fell back

because the numbers seeking aid were so great. The Israeli military said troops nearby fired warning shots. The GHF, which uses armed American security contractors, aims to bypass the UN as the main supplier of aid in Gaza, where experts have warned of a looming famine after an 11-week Israeli blockade that was recently eased.

Giant of African literature Ngugi wa Thiong'o dies aged 87

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, who has died aged 87, was a titan of modern African literature - a storyteller who refused to be bound by jail, exile and illness. His work spanned roughly six decades, primarily documenting the transformation of his country - Kenya - from a colonial subject to a democracy.

Ngũgĩ was tipped to win the Nobel Prize for Literature countless times, leaving fans dismayed each time the medal slipped through his fingers. He will be remembered not only as a Nobelworthy writer, but also as a fierce proponent of literature written in native African languages.

Brazil sues China carmaker BYD over 'slave-like' conditions

Brazilian prosecutors are suing Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD and two of its contractors, saying they were responsible for human trafficking and conditions "analogous to slavery" at a factory construction site in the country.

The Public Labour Prosecutor's Office (MPT) in the state of Bahia says 220 Chinese workers were rescued after it began an investigation in response to an anonymous complaint.

The MPT is seeking 257 million Brazilian reais ($45.5m; £33.7m) in damages from the three companies.

Hamas Gaza Leader Sinwar Killed: Israel

would supply Kyiv with its Taurus missiles. Merz took office earlier this month, promising to beef up German support for Ukraine, and said this week that there were "no longer" any range restrictions on weapons supplied by Kyiv's Western allies. The Taurus has a range of 500km and could reach deeper into Russian territory than other far-range missiles.Although Merz did not refer to the Taurus by name during his press conference with the Ukrainian leader, he did say a "memorandum of understanding" on long-range missiles would be signed by the German and Ukrainian defence ministers later on Wednesday.

Tel Aviv, Israel: Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Wednesday that Hamas' Gaza chief Muhammad Sinwar has been killed by Israel's army. There were reports of the Hamas chief being grievously injured in a massive airstrike by Israel on May 14. At the time the Israel Defence Forces or IDF was not in a position to confirm if the strike had killed the top militant. Muhammad Sinwar was the brother of former Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in a clash with the Israeli military in October 2024. Yahya Sinwar had masterminded the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack on Israel, which resulted in the war in Gaza

Owaisi Tells Saudi: 240M Proud Indian Muslims

New Delhi: Exposing Pakistan's propaganda to project its conflict with India as a HinduMuslim binary, AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has said more than 240 million proud Muslims live in India and India has many reputed Islamic scholars. "It is most unfortunate that Pakistan gives out a wrong message to the Arab world and the Muslim world that we are a Muslim country and India is not. There are 240 million proud Indian Muslims living in India. Our Islamic scholars are much better than any scholar in the world. They can speak the best of the Arabic language... He was scheduled to visit the event celebrating 50 years of Sikkim’s statehood; however, due to bad weather, he could not travel to the state, and addressed the gathering via video conference. PM Modi further exposed Pakistan, which he has been doing in his public addresses since May 7 Operation Sindoor, and said that India showed what it is capable of by precisely destroying terror bases deep inside Pakistan.

3 Indians Kidnapped in Iran, Rs.1 Crore Ransom Demanded

Three Indian men from Punjab— residents of Sangrur, SBS Nagar, and Hoshiarpur—have been kidnapped in Iran while en route to Australia on work permits. They went missing on May 1, and a ransom of Rs.1 crore has been demanded by the abductors. The victims were allegedly sent via an agent who promised to take them through the Dubai-Iran route to Australia. A video surfaced showing the men bound, injured, and threatened with a knife, with the kidnappers making the ransom demand. The Indian Embassy in Tehran is working with local authorities to locate and rescue the men. One of the victims' mothers, Balwinder Kaur, has appealed to the Indian government for urgent help

Tharoor Hits Back at Critics Over PM Praise

In a sharp response to his party colleagues' jibes after he praised the Narendra Modi government's fight against terrorism, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has said "critics and trolls" are welcome to distort his views and that he has "better things to do".

Mr Tharoor is heading an Indian delegation as part of the Centre's global outreach in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. After events in the US and Panama, the delegation is now headed to Bogota.

"After a long and successful day in Panama, I have to wind up at midnight

time for this - but anyway: For those zealots fulminating about my supposed ignorance of Indian valour across the LoC: "I was clearly and explicitly speaking only about reprisals for terrorist attacks and not about previous wars; and my remarks were preceded by a reference to the several attacks that have taken place in recent years alone, during which previous Indian responses were both restrained and constrained by our responsible respect for the LoC and the IB," he said in a post on X. "But as usual, critics and trolls are welcome to distort my views and words as they see fit. I genuinely have better things to do. Goodnight."

US Visa Interview Pause Hits Indian Students Hardest

India has become the largest source of international students in the United States, surpassing China in recent years. In 2023-24, over 331,600 Indian students were enrolled in US colleges and universities, making up nearly 30% of all foreign students in the country. The majority of these students pursue degrees in Math, Computer Science, and Engineering. However, the Trump administration’s recent decision to pause all new student visa interviews globally has placed aspiring Indian students in a difficult position. The suspension, ordered by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, aims to expand social media screening and background checks for visa applicants, significantly delaying the application process. No timeline has been given for when interviews will resume, creating uncertainty for thousands of Indian students planning to study in the US.

and political protests on campuses, especially those related to international conflicts such as the war in Gaza. Students involved in such protests risk

India has surpassed China as the largest group of international students in the US. A US visa pause affects Indian applicants most, delaying interviews due to enhanced social media scrutiny. In 2023-24, India contributed 30% of foreign students in America.

The move follows the administration’s tougher stance on student activism

visa revocation and deportation, labeled by US authorities as “terror sympathizers.”

This visa freeze comes as the US seeks to reform higher education and crack down on what it calls divisive “left liberal” policies in American universities. Indian students, many of whom are pursuing graduate studies, now face extended wait times and increased scrutiny, impacting their academic and career plans.

With India contributing the largest share of international students, this policy shift could severely disrupt educational exchange between the two nations. The US State Department emphasizes the need to thoroughly vet applicants to ensure they have no criminal intent and will positively contribute during their stay, but for many Indian students, the future remains uncertain amid these new restrictions.

Ex-Russian President Warns Trump of 'World War 3'

Moscow: Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has warned Donald Trump of World War III after the US President said his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, was "playing with fire" by continuing the war with Ukraine. The threat came as Trump said he would "absolutely" consider new sanctions on Moscow amid missile and drone bombardment in Ukraine that left many dead. "Regarding Trump's words about Putin "playing with fire" and "really bad things" happening to Russia. I only know of one REALLY BAD thing - WWIII. I hope Trump understands this!" US Student Visa Rules Tighten: 4 Actions That Risk Deportation

Washington: The U.S. government, under President Donald Trump, is implementing stricter rules for international students applying for visas, intensifying vetting procedures and expanding surveillance, including monitoring social media activity. The State Department has instructed U.S. embassies to halt new student visa appointments while the new process is rolled out. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that all visa applicants, whether students or tourists, will undergo rigorous scrutiny. “We will continue to use every tool we can to assess who it is that's coming here,” she said, stressing the importance of ensuring that entrants understand U.S. laws, have no criminal intent, and contribute positively during their stay. The administration has warned

that international students may face deportation for violating visa conditions. This includes skipping classes, dropping out of academic programs, overstaying visa periods, or engaging in unauthorized work. Additionally, students are being cautioned against sharing content on social media platforms—such as Instagram, TikTok, or X (formerly Twitter)—that could be interpreted as a threat to national security. Earlier this year, the government

revoked the legal status of thousands of international students over minor infractions such as traffic violations or alcohol-related incidents. Though many of these students later regained their status through legal appeals, the administration has since expanded the list of actions that could lead to visa termination.

The new rules reflect broader concerns from the Trump administration about foreign nationals and national security. Critics argue the policies may discourage global talent from pursuing education in the U.S., while officials insist the measures are necessary to ensure the integrity and safety of the immigration system. With these new policies, international students in the U.S. are under closer scrutiny than ever before, facing the risk of deportation for even minor violations.

India's alarm over Chinese spying rocks global surveillance industry

Global manufacturers of surveillance equipment are facing increasing tension with Indian regulators over stringent new rules requiring security testing of all internet-connected CCTV cameras sold in the country. The rules, effective from April 9, mandate that manufacturers submit hardware, software, and even source code for government lab assessment, sparking fears of supply disruptions and accusations of protectionism. This move is part of India’s broader effort to bolster cybersecurity amid growing alarm over Chinese surveillance capabilities. In 2021, the Indian government revealed that one million surveillance cameras installed in government institutions were from Chinese firms, raising concerns about data vulnerabilities. India’s cybersecurity chief from 2015 to 2019, Gulshan Rai, warned of espionage risks, noting that internet-connected cameras could be remotely accessed by hostile actors.

The rules apply to global giants like China’s Hikvision, Dahua, and Xiaomi, South Korea’s Hanwha, and Motorola Solutions from the U.S. All manufacturers must pass

Trump administration seeks to pull estimated $100m in Harvard funding

The Trump administration will direct US federal agencies to review Harvard University's grants to potentially end or redistribute funding, as part of the White House's escalating battle with America's oldest university.

The Government Services Administration (GSA) plans to circulate a letter to agencies asking them to identify whether Harvard contracts could be "cancelled or redirected elsewhere", a senior White House official said.

The administration estimates about 30 contracts, collectively worth $100m (£74m), could be reviewed. It already had frozen $2.65bn in federal grants and tried to revoke Harvard's ability to enrol international students.

Harvard University did not immediately comment.

This report is based on a Reuters review of dozens of documents, including records of meetings and emails between manufacturers and Indian IT ministry officials, and interviews with six people familiar with India's drive to scrutinize the technology

Indian government lab testing before marketing their products. Despite industry pushback during an April 3 meeting with officials, the government declined to delay enforcement, citing urgent national security concerns. The policy requires tamper-proof camera designs, strong encryption, and malware protection. Manufacturers must submit software testing results

and may be required to provide proprietary source code if their devices use non-standard communication protocols. The rules also permit Indian authorities to inspect overseas factories for cyber vulnerabilities. India’s Standardization Testing and Quality Certification Directorate (STQC), under the IT ministry, oversees the process. As of May

28, only 35 out of 342 product applications had been approved, with just one cleared from a foreign company. Industry players like Hanwha and Infinova voiced concerns over delays, limited lab capacity, and the impact of repeated firmware testing and factory audits. Bosch and CP Plus, a dominant Indian player, have called for provisional approvals to maintain business continuity. China’s involvement is a key concern. With 80% of CCTV components sourced from China and Hikvision and Dahua holding 30% of the market, India’s policy echoes measures in the U.S., UK, and Australia, where Chinese surveillance gear has faced restrictions. Xiaomi reported being asked to provide extra documentation due to internal Indian guidelines for firms from neighboring countries. China’s foreign ministry criticized the policy as discriminatory. India’s $3.5 billion CCTV market is projected to double by 2030, but retailers, like those in New Delhi’s Nehru Place, are already reporting up to 50% revenue drops due to product shortages. Despite backlash, India remains firm: the new rules are a necessary step to safeguard national security.

The Manhattan-based Court of International Trade said the US Constitution gives Congress exclusive authority to regulate commerce with other countries that is not overridden by the President's emergency powers to safeguard the American economy.

Washington, D.C. – A U.S. trade court has blocked former President Donald Trump’s sweeping 'Liberation Day' tariffs, ruling that he exceeded his authority by imposing broad import duties on countries with trade surpluses against the U.S. Trump had invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), citing trade deficits and threats from Mexican drug cartels as justification. The administration claimed the tariffs, unveiled on April 2, were part of a broader effort to restore U.S. manufacturing and reduce trade imbalances, particularly with China and the European Union.

The Manhattan-based Court of International Trade rejected those arguments, stating that IEEPA does not grant the President unlimited tariff authority. “Congress did not delegate unbounded powers under IEEPA,” the court wrote, emphasizing

that only Congress holds the constitutional power to regulate international commerce.

In its ruling, the court clarified that while it would not assess the wisdom of Trump’s tariffs, they were illegal due to lack of statutory authority. “An unlimited delegation of tariff authority would constitute an improper abdication of legislative power,” the decision read.

The Trump administration argued the tariffs helped ease tensions between India and Pakistan following an April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir and warned the ruling could destabilize ongoing trade talks.

Negotiations are reportedly in a “delicate state,” with a July 7 deadline to finalize deals.

The decision came in response to lawsuits filed by five small U.S. businesses and 13 states, who claimed the tariffs harmed their operations. Several other legal challenges are still pending.

The administration immediately filed an appeal. White House aide Stephen Miller criticized the ruling on social media, calling it a “judicial coup.” Meanwhile, temporary tariff reductions on China remain in effect as both countries work toward a broader trade agreement.

India Slams Pakistan at UN Over 20,000 Terror Deaths

India has strongly condemned Pakistan at the United Nations, highlighting the extensive toll of terrorism on its citizens, with over 20,000 Indians reportedly killed in terrorist attacks over the years. This denunciation follows the recent Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, where 26 civilians, primarily tourists, lost their lives. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkare-Taiba, claimed responsibility for this

attack, citing opposition to non-local settlement in the region following the abrogation of Kashmir's special status .

At the UN, India's Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Yojna Patel, condemned Pakistan's support for terrorism, referencing Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif's admission of the country's history in training and funding terrorist groups. Patel labeled Pakistan a "rogue state" fueling global terrorism and urged the international community to hold it accountable . In response to the Pahalgam attack, India took several measures, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, halting overland trade through the Attari Integrated Check Post, and ceasing the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals .

Trump Pushes for U.S.-Made iPhones, Experts Cite Hurdles

President Donald Trump is urging Apple to shift iPhone manufacturing to the U.S., threatening a 25% tariff on iPhones sold but not made in the country. His goal is to bring jobs back to the U.S., but experts say the plan faces major legal and economic obstacles.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that while the laborintensive process of assembling iPhones—especially inserting tiny screws—could be automated to create skilled jobs, Apple CEO Tim Cook told him the necessary robotics technology is not yet ready.

Cook indicated that production would only shift once precise automation becomes feasible.

Legal experts say the Trump administration could try using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose Apple-specific tariffs. However, such

company-targeted tariffs are legally unclear and may offer competitors an unfair advantage.

Dan Ives of Wedbush warned that U.S.-made iPhones could cost up to $3,500 and take a decade to implement. “It’s a fairy tale that’s not feasible,” he said. Economist Brett House added that even imposing tariffs alone would drive up consumer costs and disrupt Apple’s supply chain. Despite legal ambiguities and economic downsides, Trump could justify tariffs by invoking a trade emergency— something courts are currently weighing in an ongoing case.

Vaniya Agrawal Disrupts Microsoft Event Over Gaza Again

The protest was part of a larger movement within the tech sector, with activists demanding accountability for Microsoft's tech deals with Israel. Agrawal, who was fired shortly after her April protest, has become a visible face of tech-sector dissent.

The Microsoft Build 2025 conference in Seattle has faced repeated disruptions from pro-Palestine activists, led by Indian-American ex-Microsoft engineer Vaniya Agrawal. Known for her outspoken opposition to Microsoft’s alleged $133 million deal with Israel’s Ministry of Defence, Agrawal—alongside fellow former employee Hossam Nasr—interrupted a session on AI security, targeting senior Microsoft executives Neta Haiby and Sarah Bird. This follows her high-profile protest at Microsoft’s 50th anniversary in April, which led to her dismissal. Agrawal has since become a prominent voice in the tech sector's protest movement, accusing Microsoft of aiding Israeli military operations through its AI and Azure services, and continues to share protest content from Build 2025 on social media.

India to urge FATF to relist Pakistan in grey list

New Delhi: After the success of Operation Sindoor, India is intensifying efforts to expose Pakistan’s ongoing terror funding. Sources told NDTV that India will pursue a two-pronged strategy — raising concerns with the World Bank in June and submitting a dossier to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to relist Pakistan on its grey list. The move follows reports that Pakistan seeks fast-tracked approval of a $20 billion, 10-year loan from the World Bank for private sector and climate resilience projects, and has already received a $1 billion IMF bailout instalment. India has voiced strong objections, especially following the Pahalgam terror attack and cross-border hostilities by the Pakistan Army.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reportedly urged IMF Managing Director

Pakistan was put in the ‘grey list’ in June 2018, and faced “increased monitoring” till it was removed in October 2022. Being in this list adversely impacts FDI and capital flows as businesses have to undertake enhanced due diligence.

Kristalina Georgieva to reconsider aid to Pakistan, citing past misuse of funds for arms procurement. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh warned that aid is indirectly financing terror, pointing to planned spending on rebuilding terror bases targeted in Operation Sindoor and alleged funding of Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar.

India previously abstained from an IMF aid vote but remains concerned that international funding supports Pakistan's military and terror activities.

Delhi argues that Pakistan’s removal from the FATF grey list in 2022 was premature, despite some progress in anti-terror financing measures India, a FATF member, intends to present evidence of ongoing terror support by Pakistan at upcoming international forums, including the FATF and the World Bank.

Canada Cuts Student Permits by 31%, Creating Hurdles for Indian

Canada’s recent immigration policy changes have significantly impacted Indian students, as study permits for them fell by nearly 31% in the first quarter of 2025. According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), only 30,640 permits were issued to Indian students during this period, down from 44,295 in Q1 2024. In 2023, Canada issued 681,155 study permits, with Indian students receiving 278,045. By 2024, total permits dropped to 516,275, with Indian numbers falling to 188,465. New application requirements have also come into effect. ‘We have to stop what’s going on, it’s insane’: Robert De Niro on battling age, apathy and Trump

“It's time for everyone who cares about liberty to organise,” he said, “to protest, and when there are elections, vote. Vote. Tonight, and for the next 11 days, we show our strength and commitment by celebrating art in this glorious festival. Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité.”

At the Cannes Film Festival’s opening night, Robert De Niro received an honorary Palme d’Or and used the global stage to deliver a bold, politically charged speech. Standing alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, De Niro spoke passionately about defending democracy, celebrating art, and condemning authoritarianism—especially in his home country, the United States. “In my country, we are fighting like hell for the democracy we once took for granted,” De Niro said. “Art looks for truth. Art embraces diversity. That’s why art is a threat to autocrats and fascists.” He criticized the U.S. president—calling him a “Philistine”—for cutting funding to the arts, humanities, and education, and for imposing a 100% tariff on foreign films. “You can’t put a price on creativity, but apparently you can put a tariff on it.”

Tamannaah Bhatia: Daring Partners Fills the Entertainment Void

Tamannaah Bhatia is all set to headline a refreshing new OTT series titled Daring Partners, where she stars alongside Diana Penty. The show revolves around two women navigating the challenges of establishing themselves in the alcohol business — a field largely dominated by men. Packed with quirky moments and heartfelt undertones, the series aims to deliver entertainment with a purpose.

In a recent interview, Tamannaah shed light on what sets Daring Partners apart in the current OTT landscape. “While it is in the fun and entertaining space, it still has a strong emotional connect. Back in the day, sitcoms had a different charm. I have not seen much of that in the OTT space. The content has either become too serious or too frivolous. This show will potentially fill that void where you are entertained as well as moved by something,” she shared.

Tamannaah, who has worked across multiple industries since her teenage years, believes the show will present a never-before-seen side of her. “I’ve been in front of the camera since I was 15. People have seen me grow —from a teenager to a woman in her 30s. Now I feel like I finally get to show them a version of me they’ve never seen before,” she said.

The actress also touched upon the portrayal of female strength in media, adding that Daring Partners will steer clear of stereotypes. “There are many different types of strong women, however even that has become typecast. The show will give the audience a very real sneak peek into strong women in a working environment, dealing with life and preconceived notions. It is going to be an authentic presentation of that,” she emphasized.

FIA Chicago Hosts Special Memorial Day Meet & Greet to Honor Service and Community

CHICAGO, IL- The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago, a cornerstone of the Indo-American community since the 1980s, recently hosted a solemn Tribute to Pahalgam Victims, a tribute to the Bhara-tiya Armed Forces, and the 2025–26 Executive Board Oath-Taking Ceremony, alongside a special Memorial Day Meet & Greet. The event drew over 150 distinguished leaders from Bharatiya organizations, business-es, and the wider community.

Despite the Memorial Day weekend, the strong turnout underscored the community’s unity and unwaver-ing commitment. Attendees were warmly welcomed with floral greetings, while participating organizations were honored with certificates of

appreciation. Sponsors, advertisers, and donors received special recog-nition for their crucial support.

The FIA also acknowledged the contributions of its member associations, past presidents, trustees, delegates, and media representatives.

The program began with light refreshments and concluded with a delicious dinner. It ended on a powerful and thought-provoking note, with impactful messages from Honorable TrusteeDirector Dr. Bharat Barai and President Hemant Patel.

Speakers stressed that the tribute to the Pahalgam victims must be communicated in a language terror-ists—and their state sponsors like Pakistan— understand. Pakistan, they said, continues to serve as

New Wave of Text Message Scams Hits Phones Nationwide

WASHINGTON, DC- Despite repeated warnings from the FBI and police departments nationwide, iPhone and Android users continue to fall victim to daily cyberattacks—losing money, personal data, and even their identities. While geopolitical tensions between leaders like Trump and Xi dominate headlines, Chinese organized crime groups such as Smishing Triad and Panda Shop have quietly industrialized SMS-based attacks. These text message scams now target nearly every city and state across the U.S.

It began with fake delivery notifications, but it’s the unpaid toll scams that have become alarmingly wide-spread. At this point, it’s hard to believe any American smartphone user hasn’t seen at least one of the many alerts from the FBI, police, or DMV, which have been issued weekly for months. Still, the scams con-tinue to work—and at scale.

The latest warnings, issued in recent days by authorities in New York, Florida, California, and the FCC, em-phasize: “Toll operators typically don’t use text messages to collect on overdue accounts, and do not use threatening language to

rush customers into action.”

That’s putting it mildly. If you receive a text about an unpaid toll, assume it’s a scam—every time. If you think you might actually owe a toll, use only the official, publicly listed contact information to verify it. Then, follow the FBI’s advice: delete the message. And prepare yourself—these attacks aren’t going away. In fact, they’re evolving. The next wave is ex-pected to pivot from tolls to banking, with messages impersonating financial institutions rather than deliv-ery services or toll operators.

Worse still, future attacks won’t rely solely on SMS. Expect to see them via RCS and iMessage, featuring highquality visuals and hyper-realistic text generated by AI—making them even harder to detect. These Chinese OCGs (organized crime groups) operate with a sense of impunity, largely outside the reach of U.S. law enforcement.

Cybersecurity firm Resecurity reports that a single threat actor can send up to 2 million smishing messages per day— enough to target 60 million people per month, or 720 million per year. That’s nearly two attacks for every person in the U.S. annually.

While there are red flags—such as suspicious links with Chinese toplevel domains like .TOP or .XIN, or de-ceptive URLs mimicking legitimate .COM sites—your best defense is simple: assume any message about an undelivered package, unpaid toll, compromised password, or suspended account is a scam.

the global epicenter of terrorism. The international community must recognize and confront the deeper, cross-border roots of extremism.

There were also strong calls to boycott countries like Turkey and all entities—be they businesses, communities, or individuals—that support terrorism. As one speaker put it:

“Terrorism and atrocities must never be forgotten or forgiven. Don’t pay for your own destruc-tion— boycott businesses that fund terror.”

The gathering further emphasized that patriotic festivals should be celebrated with sincere national pride—not diminished by inappropriate or vulgar Bollywood performances.

free, but now its people are seeking something deeper—eternal happiness that material wealth cannot provide,” he observed. “That search leads to spirituality, to yoga, to Sanatan Dharma.”

Beyond spiritual teachings, Swamiji is a strong advocate for ecological and humanitarian work. He helps lead Pathmeda Godham Mahatirtha, one of the world’s largest cow protection networks, which operates 65 shelters and cares for over 150,000 cows in India.

More than anything, Swamiji sees potential in deepening the spiritual bond between India and the U.S. “Together, our nations can guide the world toward peace and sustainable living,” he said. “This partnership must rise above politics and reflect shared human values.”

He calls for a life rooted in non-violence, balance, and truth—a “Jain life”—and urges both cultures to embrace mutual understanding. “Through the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, we must see the world as one family,” Swamiji said. “With compassion and open hearts, we can create a harmonious future for all.”

Indian American High Schooler Sanket Vyas Creates History in Pommel Horse Championship

CHICAGO, IL- It was a terrific win for a Chicago area Indianorigin high schooler who showed that talent can shine even when you do not expect it to. Last week at the Illinois High School Gymnastics Coaches As-sociation (IHSGCA) state championships held at Hoffman Estates High School, Conant senior Sanket Vyas delivered a terrific pommel horse routine. What left the audience in awe was that Vyas earned a score of 9.965 out of 10. This unheard of score also came along with the state title!

What makes Vyas an inspiration for other Indian-origin kids is the fact that he was able to shine even though he didn’t start his gymnastics journey in early years as is the tradition goes. He began in his fresh-man year and within a short period of four years he was able to make a mark.

Nearly $34M Worth of Illegal E-Cigarettes Confiscated by FDA and CBP

CHICAGO, IL- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced seizure of nearly two million units of unauthorized e-cigarette products in Chicago, valued at $33.8 million. Conducted in partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the operation targeted illegal shipments of e-cigarettes—mostly originating from China—intended for U.S. distribution. FDA and CBP officials discovered that many shipments used vague labeling and false valuations to evade detection. Seized brands included unauthorized products such as Snoopy Smoke and Raz. All lacked the re-quired FDA premarket authorization, rendering them illegal for sale in the U.S. “This seizure sends a clear message that the FDA will continue aggressive enforcement against illegal im-ports,” said FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary. Acting Director of the Center for Tobacco Products, Dr. Bret Koplow, added that deceptive labeling remains a persistent challenge, but enhanced screening measures are proving effective. Violations included infractions under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and misuse of protected trademarks. The seized products will be destroyed.

a Hollywood sports movie. During one of his games, his brilliant streak caught the attention of John Scallon -- the 2010 state champion from Rolling Meadows High School. Scal-lon, who went on to compete collegiately at the University of Minnesota.

Scallon took Sanket under his wing, and together—with the support of Conant Head Coach Paul Kim— they began an intense two-and-ahalf-year training regimen. They practiced both at Conant and at local clubs, focusing not only on technique but also mental toughness and consistency.

By junior year, Sanket had already made a name for himself by placing seventh in the state. But this season, he delivered a clean and dynamic routine to secure the top spot—a first for Conant High School in boys’ gymnastics in 26 years, besides creating a newer inducement for desi kids and showing them that excel-lence beyond academics is also a reality!

Sikhs Honor Fallen Soldiers in Chicago Memorial Day Parades

CHICAGO, IL- The Sikh community of Chicago and its suburbs actively participated in the 2025 Memorial Day parades held in Chicago, Naperville, and Schaumburg. Their floats, adorned with pictorial histories, honored all men and women—especially Sikh soldiers from World Wars I and II— who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom and democracy. Along the parade routes, large crowds showed their ap-preciation with applause and warm salutations for the Sikh participants.

Since 2012, the American Sikh community of Chicago has taken part in Memorial Day ceremonies and pa-rades. This year, members from across the region joined together for three separate events: Downtown Chicago, the Village of Schaumburg, and Naperville.

The float in the Naperville parade was sponsored by the Illinois Sikh Community Center - Wheaton Gurdwara Sahib, which also served langar (a free community meal) at the parade's end, turning the moment into a picniclike celebration. Before stepping off, the group gathered for Ardaas (Sikh prayer) led by Bhai Mohinder Singh. Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli and his wife visited the float prior to the parade, where they were briefed on Sikh history and contributions.

The Chicago Memorial Day Parade began at Lake and State Streets and proceeded south along State Street, concluding at Van Buren. Spectators offered thunderous applause as Sikh participants marched in unison, wearing red turbans and matching shirts. The Chicago float was sponsored by Safeway Transportation Services Corp., Pan Oceanic

Engineering Co., and Indian Harvest Restaurant in Naperville.

At the forefront of each parade were two large U.S. flags alongside the Nishan Sahib (Sikh flag). The Sikh community was honored and saluted by senior Armed Forces officers at the main review stand. A special addition this year was the honoring of two retired Indian Army officers now residing in the Chi-cago area. Their service and legacy were highlighted with their portraits prominently displayed on the floats.

• Colonel Nirmal Singh Singha, born in 1938 in Village Kathe, Hoshiarpur, Punjab, joined the Indian Military

Academy in 1957 and was commissioned in 1959. He served the Indian Army for 30 years and fought in both the 1965 and 1971 wars. After retiring in 1987, he migrated to the U.S., settling in Chicago where he ran several businesses, including a cab company, insurance agency, and gas station.

• Lt. Colonel Manmohan Singh Minhas, born in 1943 in Village Bohan, Hoshiarpur, Punjab, came from a distinguished military family. He graduated at the top of his class and was commissioned in 1963. He too served in the 1965 and 1971 wars and spent 24 years in the Indian Army. After retiring in 1987, he settled in Chicago, where he

worked briefly as an engineer before starting a cab company and investing in real es-tate.

Chicago has hosted one of the nation’s largest Memorial Day parades since 1870. This year’s event fea-tured marching bands, ROTC cadets, uniformed soldiers, veteran groups, and military vehicles. Among them was the American Sikh community’s float—one of the most visually impactful—highlighting the bravery and sacrifices of Sikh soldiers in both World Wars.

Naperville’s parade was equally wellattended. The Sikh contingent was met with clapping, salutes, and standing ovations, instilling immense pride among Indian-origin spectators.

The Sikh community is globally recognized for its contributions to military service and its spirit of bravery. Sikh soldiers have long stood at the front lines, with thousands martyred in the line of duty during global conflicts. As the Sikh participants reached the review stand in Chicago, the master of ceremonies made the following announcement:

“Sikhs have been living in the USA for over 120 years. Thousands worked in farms, lumber mills, mines, and on the Oregon, Pacific & Eastern Railroad during the early 20th century. Today, Sikhs are the fifth largest religious community in the world, with approximately 30 million adherents worldwide and over 500,000 living in the United States.”

In Schaumburg, the American Sikh community has been part of Memorial Day ceremonies at Saint Peter’s Church since 2011. This year’s participation was coordinated by Amrik Pal Singh and Avtar Singh Aulakh, who organized displays featuring Sikh soldiers’ posters and served free food to attendees.

Testimony Highlights Deadly Stakes in Mahmoud Khalil’s Deportation Case

NEW YORK, NY- At an asylum hearing Thursday in Jena, La., Mahmoud Khalil testified that he never imag-ined the United States would persecute him for his speech — or that deportation could expose him to “as-sassination, kidnapping, torture,” and put his wife and newborn son at risk.

“This is truly unlawful, what is happening to me,” Khalil said. “I believe that justice will prevail.”

Khalil, a Columbia University graduate and prominent figure in pro-Palestinian demonstrations, had an emotionally charged day. In the morning, he met his 1-monthold son, Deen, for the first time. He then spent hours in court as witnesses testified that deporting him would put his life in grave danger.

Khalil said the U.S. government had wrongly labeled him “a terrorist, a terrorist sympathizer,” calling it a gross mischaracterization.

“Wherever I might go in the world,” he added, “I would have a target on my back.”

Arrested in New York in March, Khalil has been detained in Louisiana for over two months.

Immigration Judge Jamee Comans, who previously ruled that the government had met the burden to deport him, heard arguments from defense witnesses who warned that

his international profile would make him a target, particularly by Israel.

Miller, a transportation engineer and Maryland’s first South Asian woman elected to statewide office, shared her perspective during a live episode of The Infrastructure Podcast. She emphasized how her back-ground as both an immigrant and an infrastructure expert

shapes her approach to leadership.

“Great infra-structure isn’t just built with concrete—it’s built with purpose,” she noted, underscoring Maryland’s mission not only to rebuild but also to uplift communities affected by the collapse.

She described Maryland’s coordinated response involving federal, state, and local partners, aiming to re-store critical transportation links and support displaced workers, especially at the Port of Baltimore. The TIP Summit, hosted by Bentley Systems and collaborators including the British Consulate and IBM, is part of a global effort to revolutionize infrastructure development by integrating policy, technology, and commu-nity needs

Trump’s Gold Card Goes Digital Soon

WASHINGTON, DC- A new U.S. visa program, informally dubbed the “Gold Card,” is expected to launch soon, according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Speaking at an Axios event, Lutnick announced that a government website — trumpcard.gov — will go live within days to provide information and regis-tration for the visa, which offers permanent U.S. residency in exchange for a $5 million investment.

for blending the geopolitical with the deeply personal. The Trump admin-istration argues that Khalil’s presence undermines U.S. efforts to combat antisemitism. His lawyers counter that his detention is political retaliation for his pro-Palestinian advocacy and that he has spoken publicly against antisemitism. Witnesses, including Muriam Haleh Davis, a professor at UC Santa Cruz, warned that Khalil would be at risk across much of the region. “He is the kind of target who would be at risk in many places,” Davis said.

Designed as a high-tier alternative to the EB-5 visa, the Gold Card promises not only green card status but also potential tax exemptions on foreign income and a pathway to U.S. citizenship. Lutnick framed the program as a strategy to attract wealthy individuals and generate up to $1 trillion in federal revenue if 200,000 investors participate.

He shared that interest is already strong, particularly in the Middle East, and predicted high demand from global elites. However, immigration law experts question the program’s legality, noting that new visa cat-egories generally require congressional approval — which this initiative lacks. While similar investor visa programs in countries like Portugal and the U.K. have faced rollback over transparency and economic impact concerns, the U.S. version’s future hinges on how it’s implemented and whether it gains public and political support.

Rajkumar Proposes Malayalee Heritage Month

NEW YORK, NY – New York State Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar, the first Indian American elected to the state legislature, introduced a resolution on May 22 to designate May 2025 as Malayalee Heritage Month. The resolution seeks to formally recognize the contributions of the Malayali community—originally from Kerala, India—to the civic and cultural fabric of New York.

According to the 2012 U.S. Census, more than 640,000 people of Malayalam heritage reside in the United States, with significant populations in Rockland County, New York, and Bergen County, New Jersey. Rajkumar highlighted the community’s impact as part of the broader Asian and Asian Pacific Islander American

populations. She emphasized the group’s rich religious diversity— including Christian, Hindu, and other traditions—and their shared dedication to service and leadership. “Kerala is often referred to as God’s own country,” she noted, “and its people in New York carry forward that ethos through their work as doctors, spiritual leaders, teachers, entrepreneurs, and community advocates.”

To commemorate the resolution, Rajkumar welcomed a delegation of Malayali leaders to the Assembly floor. Among those honored were Bishop John C. Itty, Hindu guru Dileepkumar Thankappan, and members of the Pioneer Club of Keralites—one of the oldest Malayali organizations in New York.

World’s First Human Bladder Transplant Performed by Dr. Inderbir S. Gill

LOS ANGELES, CA– In a historic medical breakthrough, Dr. Inderbir S. Gill has led the world’s first successful human bladder transplant. The eight-hour surgery, performed on May 4 at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, was a collaboration between Keck Medicine of USC and UCLA Health. This milestone could redefine treatment for patients with irreversible bladder disease. The recipient, who had lost both bladder and kidney function due to cancer, had been on dialysis for seven years. In a complex dual transplant, the team implanted a kidney followed by a bladder, connecting the new kidney directly to the donor bladder.

“The kidney began producing urine immediately, and the patient required no dialysis after surgery,” said Dr. Nima Nassiri, co-lead surgeon and director of UCLA’s Bladder Allograft Transplant Program. Dr. Gill, chair of USC Urology, added, “Everything went according to plan. The patient is doing well, and we are encour-aged by his recovery.”

Traditionally, bladder reconstruction uses intestinal tissue, often resulting in infections and kidney issues. This transplant offers a more natural alternative but requires long-term immunosuppression—making pa-tients needing kidney transplants the best candidates. Bladder transplantation has long been considered unfeasible due to pelvic complexity. Years of robotic and nonrobotic trials led to this clinical milestone, conducted under a UCLA-approved trial. Dr. Gill, a global leader in robotic urologic surgery, has authored nearly 1,000 scientific publications and trained over 260 urologists worldwide. His previous innovations include the first robotic kidney transplant in Mumbai (2017) and launching the U.S.’s first AI Urology Center at USC. Looking ahead, researchers remain cautiously optimistic. “Our goal is to help patients with terminal blad-der conditions lead better lives,” said Gill. If future results align with this success, bladder transplants could soon revolutionize urologic care.

Lawyers Raise Alarm Over ICE Arrests Inside Chicago Immigration Court

CHICAGO, IL- Federal agents appeared to arrest multiple individuals inside Chicago’s immigration court on Wednesday, May 21. According to attorneys present, plainclothes men identifying themselves as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were seen detaining people throughout the day. The National Immigrant Justice Center reported additional arrests on Thursday.

ICE declined to comment, but a Tribune reporter witnessed at least three people being taken into custody. Their attorney, Essam Abdallah, confirmed his clients had been in the U.S. for under two years and did not know their whereabouts. Similar operations have occurred

this month in Dallas, Phoenix, and Seattle. In Chicago, attorneys noted unfamiliar men sitting in waiting areas and courtrooms. One attorney followed them to the fourth floor, where immigration arrests are typically processed. Attorney Alex McGriff confirmed he heard them identify as ICE agents during hearings.

This signals a more aggressive enforcement strategy under President Trump, who recently expanded expe-dited removal powers. Individuals who cannot prove two years of continuous presence in the U.S. may be deported without a court hearing.

Legal experts warn this tactic may deter immigrants from attending court, risking automatic removal or-ders.

Attorney Khiabett Osuna said many are unaware of their legal rights during such arrests.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson condemned these actions and defended the city’s sanctuary policies. Nonetheless, ICE continues conducting operations, including recent raids involving Trump’s border czar and media figures.

“This is about fear and control,” said Rey Wences of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. “It’s an attempt to sidestep due process.”

Krishnamoorthi Criticizes Trump Panel for Ignoring South Asian Faiths

WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s announcement of the Religious Liberty Commission advisory board, which notably excludes members of the Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist faiths:

“If the Commission is truly dedicated to advancing religious freedom, it must reflect the full diversity of American faith traditions. I am deeply disappointed by the exclusion of major religions— Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism—each practiced by millions of Americans and integral to our nation’s cultural fabric. Their omission undermines the very pluralism the Commission claims to support.”

Indian American Organizations Lead Generous Donation Drive for Long Island Cares

LONG ISLAND, NY- The American Red Cross, Arya Samaj of Long Island, and the Indian American Forum came together to make a significant donation to the Bethpage Food Pantry of Long Island Cares. Food, toiletries, and non-perishable items were generously collected by the Hindu community. Initially, Arya Samaj of Long Island, students from Stony Brook University, Indian American Forum, and Brahashita Gupta had planned to send supplies to California in response to the wildfires. However, the volume of donations exceeded expectations. Dr. Azad Anand—a member of the Red Cross Board, retired professor at Stony Brook University, and former Board member of Long Island Cares—proposed that the items be redirected locally to Long Island Cares to support food-insecure individuals in the area.

The donation event took place at

Arya Samaj of Long Island on May 6, 2025, and was attended by several distinguished members from various organizations.

F1 Visa Denied in 20 Seconds: Indian Student Shocked

Representatiive iimage

WASHINGTON, DC - The F-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows international students to pursue academic programs at accredited U.S. institutions. While obtaining a U.S. visa is often seen as a major mile-stone, the process can be unexpectedly difficult. A recent social media post about an F-1 visa rejection has ignited debate online, bringing renewed attention to the issue of “embassy shopping.”

The post, which went viral, featured a student sharing their experience:

“I went in pretty confident for my F-1 interview since I had strong funding and a clear plan to return home to manage my family business. But I applied in a country where I don’t live, as wait times in my country were too long. The interview lasted barely 15 seconds — the officer just told me to apply from where I live.”

Online reactions were swift and divided. One user commented, “That’s embassy shopping — it’s a red flag. Officers may see it as desperation. You should’ve waited for a slot in your home country or tried for a cancellation.” Another added, “Unless you’ve been denied before, applying abroad is allowed. But

“Visa officers don’t have time to hear your full story. If something feels off — boom, rejection,”

without a solid travel history, it can raise suspicions.”

Some users pushed back, offering a broader view:

“I’ve renewed my U.S. visa multiple times outside my home country,” one person wrote. “It’s allowed, and even encouraged in places like India where wait times can exceed a year. There must have been another reason for the quick rejection.”

Others cautioned against taking chances: “Visa officers don’t have time to hear your full story. If something feels off — boom, rejection,” a user warned.

Several also highlighted the importance of residency status in the country where the visa application is submitted: “It’s not just about being there physically. If you’ve just arrived or lack proper residency, it’s a red flag,” someone explained.

This incident underscores the nuanced and often unpredictable nature of visa interviews, where perception can weigh just as heavily as paperwork.

Pachter, CEO of Long Island Cares, along with team members Peter Crescenti, Colleen Guirand, John McKeown, Robert LaBar-bara, John Sears, and Jessica Rosati. Lenia Kiki,

Community Disaster Program Specialist of the American Red Cross on Long Island, also participated, as did Drs. Azad and Nutan Anand, Indu Jaiswal (Chairperson, Indian American Forum), Veer Mukhi, Drs. Urmilesh and Yashpal Arya, and Sudesh Mukhi (Trustees of Arya Samaj of Long Island), along with several volunteers.

Paule Pachter and Lenia Kiki expressed heartfelt thanks to the organizers and community members for their efforts and generous donations.

Long Island Cares, a non-profit organization, utilizes such contributions to purchase nutritious food and distribute it through food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and outreach programs serving senior veterans and school children. The organization plays a crucial role in combating food insecurity across the region through restocking efforts, mobile outreach, and emergency aid.

Indian National in New York Pleads

Guilty in Staged Armed Robbery Visa Fraud Scheme

BOSTON, MA – A 37-year-old Indian national residing in New York has pleaded guilty in federal court to his role in a conspiracy that involved staging armed robberies to help individuals fraudulently obtain U.S. visas.

Rambhai Patel admitted to conspiracy to commit visa fraud during a hearing before U.S. District Court Judge Myong J. Joun. Sentencing is scheduled for August 20, 2025. Patel was indicted in December 2023 alongside a co-conspirator, who is expected to plead guilty on May 22.

Federal prosecutors allege that beginning in March 2023, Patel orchestrated at least nine staged armed robberies across the U.S.—including five in Massachusetts— targeting convenience stores, liquor shops, and fast-food outlets. The scheme was designed to falsely portray store clerks as victims of violent crimes, making them eligible for U nonimmigrant visas, which are intended for victims who suffer abuse and assist law enforcement.

Court documents reveal that Patel and his accomplice paid store owners to use their premises for the fake robberies.

Rambhai Patel, 37 staged string of armed robberies so 'victims' could get immigration benefits

In each incident, a mock assailant brandished what appeared to be a firearm, stole money from the register, and fled—actions captured on surveillance cameras. Clerks were instructed to delay calling police to enhance the appearance of authenticity.

Prosecutors said some participants paid up to $20,000 to be staged as victims. At least two later submitted U Visa applications based on the fabricated incidents.

Patel faces up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and potential deportation following sentencing. Au-thorities say the case underscores growing concerns about schemes that exploit immigration protections intended for genuine victims of crime. The U.S. Attorney’s Office noted that sentencing will be guided by federal statutes and the severity of Patel’s conduct.

Road Safety Bill Passes Assembly, Heads to Governor

HiIndia Newsdesk

CHICAGO, IL- Legislation championed by Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias to enhance road safety and raise the age for mandatory behind-the-wheel driving tests from 79 to 87 has passed the Illinois General Assembly. The bipartisan bill, HB 1226 –the Road Safety & Fairness Act – passed the Senate 57-0 after unanimous House approval. Supported by AARP Illinois, the law would take effect July 1, 2026.

Giannoulias emphasized the bill’s focus on road safety and fairness. “Senior drivers are among the safest on the road. This measure removes unnecessary burdens and aligns Illinois with national standards,” he said.

AARP Illinois Director Philippe Largent added that the bill addresses age-based discrimination and supports independence for older adults.

The legislation introduces a new process allowing immediate family members to

Chicago Schools Settle Hindu Meditation Lawsuit for $2.6M

News.

CHICAGO, IL – Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and the David Lynch Foundation for ConsciousnessBased Ed-ucation and World Peace have agreed to a $2.6 million settlement in a classaction lawsuit alleging that high school students were compelled to participate in Hindurooted Transcendental Meditation (TM) prac-tices without parental consent or full transparency.

The late David Lynch, best known as the filmmaker behind Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet, was also a passion-ate TM advocate and founded the Lynch Foundation to promote the practice globally. The lawsuit arose from the “Quiet Time” program, implemented in several CPS high schools between 2015 and 2019. Marketed as a stressreduction initiative, the program involved twice-daily meditation sessions. Plaintiffs argued it crossed constitutional boundaries by promoting religious practices under the guise of wellness.

Lead plaintiff Kaya Hudgins, 22, who was raised in a Muslim household, testified that her request to per-form Islamic prayers during Quiet Time was denied and that she was later reprimanded. She said she was given a secret mantra and told not to share

the plaintiffs, stated the outcome “vindicates the concerns of former students and parents that the initiation ceremony and daily meditation regime were effectively demonic invocation.”

The class includes 773 students who were either required to participate in TM or sit silently during sessions.

On May 7, U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly approved the settlement, which includes $860,035 in at-torney fees and a $100,000 award to Hudgins as the class representative. CPS and the Lynch Foundation will split the settlement cost evenly.

report medically related driving concerns, prompting the Secretary of State’s office to review and potentially require medical evaluations or retesting.

Under the bill:

• Drivers 79–80 must visit the DMV for vision tests but no driving tests.

• Drivers 81–86 renew every two years with vision tests and written tests if violations exist.

• Drivers 87+ continue annual renewals with vision and driving tests.

Illinois is currently the only state mandating behind-the-wheel tests based solely on age. This bill ends that practice while maintaining strong safety checks. IDOT data shows that drivers 75+ have lower crash rates than younger age groups, supporting the measure’s rationale. A COVID-era change that raised the testing age to 79 became permanent in 2024 after a study showed no increased crash rates.

Senator Villivalam Champions Bill to Ease License Renewal for Seniors

SPRINGFIELD, IL — With support from the Illinois Secretary of State and AARP, State Senator Ram Villi-valam is advancing legislation to ease driver's license renewal for seniors.

In March 2018, CPS entered into a $170,000 contract with the Lynch Foundation to fund the program through June of that year. Though the contract offered students the option of TM or silent alternatives like reading or resting, some students reported being pressured to participate in TM or punished for opting out, according to Just The

The lawsuit arose from the “Quiet Time” program, implemented in several CPS high schools between 2015 and 2019. Plaintiffs argued it crossed constitutional boundaries by promoting religious practices under the guise of wellness.

it. Upon researching the mantra, she found it referenced a Hindu deity. The lawsuit argued that such initiation ceremonies and the use of sacred mantras constituted religious indoctrination and violated the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause. Attorney John Mauck, representing

In a related case, former student Mariyah Green, a practicing Christian, received a separate $150,000 settlement in 2023.

The University of Chicago, initially named as a defendant due to its Urban Labs' involvement in evaluating Quiet Time, was later dismissed from the case.

While David Lynch passed away in January, the foundation he established continues to promote TM through its centers in New York and Fairfield, Iowa, home to Maharishi International University.

The case underscores ongoing debates about the intersection of public education, mental health initia-tives, and religious freedom— particularly when schools implement spiritually rooted programs without fully informing or accommodating students and their families.

“Seniors are among the safest drivers on our roads. This bill reduces unnecessary hurdles and aligns Illinois with 45 other states by allowing family members to report medical concerns about a relative’s driving abil-ity,” said Villivalam (D-Chicago).

Following a 2022 study he championed, which confirmed seniors’ strong safety record, Villivalam intro-duced House Bill 1226. The bill proposes raising the age for in-person license renewals from 75 to 79 and increasing the age for mandatory driving tests from 79 to 87—except for those 75 and older holding com-mercial licenses.

It also expands who can report medical concerns to the Secretary of State to include immediate family members such as spouses, parents, grandparents, siblings, and children.

“AARP Illinois proudly recognizes Senator Villivalam for his leadership in advancing the Road Safety and Fairness Act,” said Philippe Largent, AARP Illinois State Director. “This change protects the independence and dignity of older adults while maintaining safety.” House Bill 1226 passed the Senate on Thursday and awaits the Governor’s signature.
