Hundreds of US National Guard troops arrive in Chicago

Hundreds of National Guard troops from Texas have arrived at an army training centre outside Chicago to support US President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown.

Trump has branded Chicago a "war zone", following recent protests against federal immigration officials in the third-largest US city.

The deployment comes amid opposition from local officials. Illinois

Governor JB Pritzker has accused the Trump administration of an "authoritarian march" and said the state would "use every lever at our disposal to stop this power grab".

CBS also reported that trailers have been set up as temporary living quarters on the Army Reserve

19 US Lawmakers Call for TrumpIndia Relations Reset

Washington: 19 US Lawmakers on Wednesday wrote a letter to President Donald Trump urging him to "reset and repair" India-US "critical partnership." The letter was co-signed by several prominent Democratic leaders, including Deborah Ross, Ro Khanna, Brad Sherman, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Pramila Jayapal. Notably, no Republican lawmakers signed it. The Congress members warned that the US President's recent tariff hikes, which raised duties on Indian goods to as high as 50 per cent, have

undermined relations with India and hurt both American consumers and manufacturers. "We write as Members of Congress representing districts with large, vibrant Indian-American communities that maintain strong familial, cultural, and economic ties to India. Recent actions by your administration have strained relations with the world's largest democracy, creating negative consequences for both countries. We urge you to take immediate steps to reset and repair this critical partnership," they noted.

Marathon Day in Chicago Faces Unexpected Threat: ICE Activity Possible

CHICAGO, IL - Tensions over recent federal immigration actions have left many runners uneasy as the Chicago Marathon approaches. The race — one of the world’s largest — will be held this weekend while the federal government moves to expand immigration enforcement and deploy National Guard troops to the city, a backdrop that has injected an unusual political charge into what is usually a purely athletic occasion.

More than 50,000 runners are expected to weave through 29 Chicago neighborhoods on Sunday, including Pilsen and Little Village, areas with high concentrations of MexicanAmerican and other immigrant communities. Organizers say roughly 40 percent of the field — about 20,000 people — are traveling from abroad.

Mayor Brandon Johnson urged international participants to come, saying, “I believe the best way in which we can demonstrate resistance is not bending the knee to tyranny,” and

noting that thousands of runners from Mexico are registered.

Anxiety has spread on social media as runners ask whether to carry passports, tweak race-tracking apps, or even skip the event. A viral post alleging federal enforcement activity along the route heightened fears, and although

the Chicago Park District said it had no information about any such plans, many remain unsettled after weeks of reported threats and quieter neighborhood streets. Runners are used to heightened security since the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, but this year’s concerns are different — focused less on explosives and more on the possibility of detentions during the race. In response, social media and community members have offered public shows of solidarity, promising to protect vulnerable participants and stand together at the finish line.

officials have said they have received few details on the troop assignments. Trump argues the use of the troops is necessary to quell violence in Democratic-controlled cities, crack down on crime and support his deportation initiatives.

National Guard troops have limited power. They do not enforce the law, or make arrests, seizures, or searches - their role is instead about protecting federal officers and property.

Trump has already sent guard members into Los Angeles and Washington, DC, and has ordered them to enter Memphis and Portland. A federal judge temporarily barred troops from deploying to Portland, however. Another judge has allowed the Chicago deployment for now.

Tesla Lowers Prices Below $40K Amid US EV Incentive Shakeup

Tesla Inc. introduced new versions of its top-selling models priced at under $40,000, making its main vehicles more affordable to counteract the loss of US incentives for electric cars.

The new standard versions of the Model 3 sedan and Model Y sport utility vehicle start at $36,990 and $39,990, Tesla's website shows. Those starting prices are about 13% and 11% cheaper, respectively, than premium longerrange versions of each model. Tesla shares fell 4.4% on Tuesday, giving up much of Monday's gain stoked by social media posts from the company. The stock has risen more than 7% this year.

Ex-FBI Chief James Comey Pleads Not Guilty to Federal Charges

Mr Comey's lawyer entered the plea on his behalf in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday morning. Patrick Fitzgerald said he would seek to have the case dismissed for several reasons including that his client, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

Israelis mark 7 October anniversary as talks on Gaza peace plan continue

Israelis have gathered across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.

The attack saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that alongside "immense pain", Israel had shown "miraculous resilience".

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Netanyahu said on Tuesday. He vowed to "achieve all the goals of the

Leaked Docs Expose ISI’s Lashkar-ISIS Nexus in Balochistan

New Delhi: A classified Indian intelligence dossier has exposed a secret alliance between Pakistan’s InterServices Intelligence (ISI), Lashkar-eTaiba (LeT), and Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), marking a new phase in Islamabad’s proxy war strategy. The NDTV-accessed report reveals that ISI has repurposed ISKP—once rejected even by the Afghan Taliban— to wage hybrid warfare against Baloch nationalists and anti-Islamabad factions

within Afghanistan.

The dossier includes photographic evidence showing ISKP’s Balochistan coordinator, Mir Shafiq Mengal, handing a pistol to LeT chief Rana Mohammad Ashfaq, symbolizing the operational merger of the two terror groups under ISI’s direction. Mengal, long linked to the ISI, reportedly provides funding, weapons, and safe houses to ISKP militants operating out of Mastung and Khuzdar.

Following the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul, the ISI restructured ISKP operations, later roping in LeT after heavy losses in Balochistan. Experts warn that this Lashkar–ISIS nexus could destabilize Kashmir, Balochistan, and Afghanistan, reflecting Pakistan’s deepening use of terror as a state tool despite international scrutiny.

The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for recent shooting incidents in Canada. This time, the attack targeted several establishments owned by a restaurant owner in Surrey. The self-identified Bishnoi associate, Goldie Dhillon, claimed he had ordered firing at three locations of an Indian restaurant chain in Surrey, British Columbia.

In a Facebook post, Dhillon accused the owner of the restaurant chain of mistreating his employees and not paying their salaries on time.

Alleged Indian Combatant Held by Ukraine Amid Russia Conflict

Kyiv/New Delhi:

Ukrainian forces have reportedly captured a 22-year-old Indian national, Majoti Sahil Mohamed Hussein from Morbi, Gujarat, who allegedly fought for Russia. Indian authorities have yet to confirm the report and are verifying details through diplomatic channels. According to Ukrainian media, Hussein went to Russia for university studies and was later jailed on drug charges. To avoid further punishment, he signed a contract with the Russian military and received 16 days of training before being sent on his first combat mission on October 1. After three days, he reportedly surrendered to Ukrainian troops, citing conflicts with his commander and refusing to continue fighting.

Hussein told Ukrainian forces he was promised financial compensation by Russia, which he never received, and expressed a desire to remain in Ukraine rather than return to Russia. Earlier, India had reported that 12 nationals died and 16 went missing after being misled into joining Russian forces. New Delhi continues to maintain a neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict while seeking the safe return of its citizens.

Washington: The bitter tribalism that drove the United States into a government shutdown is putting compromise out of reach, analysts say -- and threatening to turn a staring contest between the Democrats and Donald Trump's Republicans into a protracted crisis.

As the nation enters its second week with federal agencies paralyzed, multiple strategists with vivid memories of previous standoffs told AFP the president and his foes could be in it for the long haul.

"It's possible this shutdown drags on for weeks, not just days," said Andrew Koneschusky, a former press secretary for Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader at the center of the latest deadlock.

Wellness Trends in 2025: A Holistic Approach to Health and Lifestyle

From mental well-being to sustainable choices, wellness is evolving beyond fitness routines.

As we move through 2025, the concept of wellness is rapidly transforming, embracing a more holistic and inclusive approach that goes beyond traditional fitness routines. Today, wellness is not just about physical health; it integrates mental, emotional, and environmental well-being. Experts say this shift reflects a broader understanding that health is multidimensional, and sustainable habits are key to longterm wellness.

One of the most prominent trends this year is holistic wellness, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. Practices such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness are becoming integral to daily routines, helping individuals manage stress, improve focus, and cultivate inner peace. Research indicates that these practices not only enhance mental clarity but also support physical health by reducing inflammation, improving sleep, and lowering the risk of chronic illnesses.

This approach ensures optimal nutrient intake, promotes better digestion, and aids in weight management, making wellness both more effective and individualized.

Personalized nutrition is another major development in the wellness space. Advances in technology now allow individuals to tailor their diets according to genetic profiles, lifestyle, and personal health goals. Customized meal plans, supported by nutritional apps and DNA-based insights, are making one-size-fits-all diets obsolete.

Mental health awareness continues to gain momentum, breaking long-standing stigmas. Public campaigns, online therapy platforms, and workplace mental health initiatives are creating supportive environments for individuals seeking help. Experts stress that prioritizing mental wellbeing is as crucial as physical health, noting that stress, anxiety, and depression can have cascading effects on the body if left unaddressed.

The workplace is also becoming a focal point for wellness initiatives.

Employers are increasingly investing in employee well-being programs, offering flexible work hours, mental health support, and fitness opportunities. Companies that prioritize wellness report higher productivity, lower absenteeism, and improved employee satisfaction, demonstrating the mutual benefits of a healthy workforce.

Sustainability has emerged as a significant aspect of modern wellness. People are making ecofriendly choices, from natural skincare and organic foods to environmentally conscious fitness gear. This trend underscores the growing recognition that personal health and the planet’s health are intertwined, encouraging lifestyles that are both beneficial and responsible.

In conclusion, wellness in 2025 reflects a comprehensive approach that blends physical, mental, and environmental considerations. From personalized diets to mindful practices and sustainable living, individuals have more tools than ever to support their overall well-being. By embracing these evolving trends, society is moving toward a future where health is viewed not just as the absence of illness, but as a balanced, purposeful, and sustainable way of life.

Stay Active After 60: Top Home Exercises for Seniors

Staying active is essential for people over 60, as regular exercise helps maintain strength, flexibility, balance, and mental well-being. Experts recommend low-impact workouts that can be safely performed at home without special equipment. Here are some of the best exercises for seniors looking to stay fit:

1. Chair Squats

Chair squats are perfect for strengthening the legs and improving balance. Stand in front of a sturdy chair, lower yourself slowly until you lightly touch the seat, then rise back up. Repeat 10–15 times to build lower-body strength safely.

2. Wall Push-Ups

A gentler alternative to traditional push-ups, wall push-ups help strengthen the chest, shoulders, and arms. Stand facing a wall, place your hands on it, and slowly bend your elbows to bring your chest closer, then push back. Aim for 10–15 repetitions.

3. Seated Leg Lifts

Seated leg lifts enhance core stability and improve

leg strength. Sit upright in a chair, extend one leg at a time, hold for a few seconds, and lower it slowly. Perform 10–12 lifts per leg to tone muscles without strain.

4. Marching in Place

Marching in place is an excellent way to increase circulation, improve cardiovascular health, and maintain mobility. Lift your knees alternately and swing your arms gently. Start with 1–2 minutes and gradually increase the duration.

5. Gentle Stretching

Daily stretching improves flexibility, reduces stiffness, and prevents injuries. Focus on neck, shoulders, arms, and legs, holding each stretch for 15–20 seconds. Stretching can also calm the mind and improve posture.

By incorporating these simple home exercises into daily routines, seniors can enjoy better mobility, balance, and overall health. Fitness experts emphasize starting slow, listening to the body, and consulting a doctor if any health concerns exist before beginning a new exercise regimen.

After the first film, I discussed ideas with my co-writer and the Hombale team. Instead of a sequel, we felt a prequel would give the proper backstory, inspired by the announcement poster we released.

Q: What should fans expect?

Fans will see what they expect and also what they don’t expect. The story goes back in time, and the climax aims to surpass the first film’s impact.

Q: How have you evolved as a filmmaker and actor?

I’ve learned from past mistakes. Every new project is about scaling up—as a director, actor, and storyteller—while minimizing errors. It’s a continuous learning process.

Q: How did Kantara’s success change your life? The film, started during the second lockdown, became a wildfire of appreciation, not just in Kannada but across Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu audiences.

Q: What’s next?

I’m working on Jai Hanuman and a project called Anandmath with Ashwin Gangaraju.

Q: Will there be a third Kantara?

Only if the story feels meaningful. I won’t make a part 3 just due to expectation; the prequel felt natural because Kantara’s world has depth.

The actress further added, “I mean, of course, I married him for a reason because I think he is wonderful to me and just as a human being. But 100 percent, the person I love trolling the most is him. New Delhi – Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound, India’s official entry for the Oscars 2026 in the Best International Feature Film category, has sparked controversy over reports that the family who inspired the story was paid only Rs 10,000. The film is based on real-life friends Amrit and Saiyub, who traveled home during the lockdown.

Following a report by The Indian Express, Ghaywan clarified that the Rs 10,000 was a small parting gesture given to Amrit’s father during initial research and not the full compensation. He emphasized that the family’s contributions were deeply valued, and significant support was provided, though he refrained from disclosing exact amounts out of respect for their bond.

Taiwan Refuses 50% Chip Production in U.S.

Taiwan has rejected proposals to produce 50% of its semiconductor chips in the United States, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining domestic manufacturing capacity. Officials stated that while Taiwan is open to international partnerships and expanding global supply chains, relocating such a significant portion of production abroad is neither feasible nor in line with national interests. The announcement comes amid ongoing U.S. efforts to secure semiconductor supply and reduce reliance on foreign sources, highlighting tensions between strategic collaboration and domestic industrial priorities.

PM Modi Praises RSS Role in Freedom Struggle Opposition Criticizes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday projected the RSS as a key cog in the country’s fight for independence, taking it upon himself to dispel the widely held belief that the outfit had sided with the British.

Speaking at the centenary celebrations of the RSS at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre here, Modi said:

“If we look at the freedom struggle, many workers, including the most revered (RSS founder) Dr Hedgewarji, participated in the freedom movement. Doctor Sahib went to jail several times. The Sangh protected many freedom fighters and worked shoulder-toshoulder with them. In 1942, when

the movement against the British was launched in Chimur, many volunteers faced severe atrocities.”

According to historical records, the RSS stayed away from the Quit India movement — of which the agitation in Chimur (currently in Maharashtra) was a part — and encouraged its members to join the Civic Guard, a colonial equivalent of the Home Guards.

The RSS has frequently faced intense criticism from the Opposition over its role in the freedom struggle and its refusal for long to hoist the Tricolour, with the BJP’s rivals using this to question the party’s much-vaunted nationalistic credentials.

Russia Snubs India, Supplies Fighter Jet Engines to Pakistan

Russia has reportedly agreed to supply fighter jet engines to Pakistan, while reportedly denying a key defense request from India, raising strategic concerns in New Delhi. Indian defense officials had sought advanced components and technology upgrades from Russia to support their fleet modernization programs. Sources suggest that Moscow’s decision to prioritize Pakistan’s requirements over India’s could impact ongoing joint defense projects and complicate India’s procurement timelines. Analysts say the move highlights Russia’s careful balancing act in South Asia, aiming to maintain influence with both countries without overtly alienating either side. While India remains a major importer of Russian military equipment, Pakistan has increasingly benefited from supply agreements, including fighter jet maintenance, training, and engine deliveries. The Indian Ministry of Defence has not yet issued an official statement regarding the reports. Experts suggest this development may accelerate India’s efforts to diversify its defense procurement sources beyond Russia to ensure timely modernization of its armed forces.

US Shutdown Could Trigger Job Crisis: 43,000 Faces Unemployment Risk

The United States has entered a government shutdown, and economic advisors to former President Donald Trump have warned that a prolonged closure could have severe economic consequences.

According to White House memos, if the shutdown continues on a weekly basis, the U.S. GDP could suffer losses of up to $15 billion. If the shutdown stretches for a month, an additional 43,000 people could lose their jobs. This figure does not include the 1.9 million federal employees who are either working without pay or on furlough, 80% of whom are based in Washington, D.C.

White House aides indicated that the memo will be sent to Republican lawmakers to guide their political strategy during the shutdown. The dispute in Congress centers on funding for ObamaCare subsidies, with Trump administration officials claiming that the subsidies could go to undocumented immigrants.

White House spokesperson Kush Desai said, “The real economic consequences of the government shutdown fall on Senate Democrats, who are holding the federal government, the economy, and the nation hostage to provide free healthcare to illegal immigrants.”

and place the blame on Democrats. Recent surveys suggest that while the public currently holds Republican lawmakers responsible, a significant number of people blame both parties. The shutdown comes amid renewed scrutiny of Trump’s tariff policies and their economic impact. Data released by payroll company ADP on Wednesday showed that 32,000 private-sector jobs were lost in September. A four-page report from the Council of Economic Advisers warned that a month-long shutdown could reduce consumer spending by $30 billion, with about half of the impact falling directly on federal employees and the rest spreading across other sectors.

Operation “Clog the Toilet”: Far-Right Trolls Try to Block Indians on H-1B from Flying Back to U.S.

Over the weekend that former President Donald Trump announced a shocking executive order slapping a $100,000 fee on H-1B visa holders trying to re-enter the U.S., a disturbing campaign began online. On sites like 4chan and the far-right forum patriots.win, users launched what they called “Operation Clog the Toilet.” The plan? Flood airline booking systems with fake reservations on popular India–U.S. routes, driving up ticket prices and making it harder for Indians to return before the new fee kicked in. Comments on the forums ranged from racist to downright inappropriate. Some comments read: “Want to keep them in India? Clog the flight reservation system!”

Another read: 4chan hatched a diabolical plan to clog up flight

The growing wave of racism and anti-immigrant trolling targeting Indians and other H-1B workers in the U.S. While Air India did not comment on the unusual price surge, the mocking name of the campaign“Clog the Toilet” appeared to play on recent news of Air India flights diverted because of bathroom malfunctions.

schedules to keep the Poopjeets in India or pay $100k

The method was simple but nasty: hold tickets without actually buying

them. This tricks airlines into thinking demand is high, which automatically pushes prices up for real travelers.

Although Trump’s order was rolled back within days, the confusion and sudden fare spike caused panic in visa and immigration circles.

The campaign also reflects a darker trend: the growing wave of racism and anti-immigrant trolling targeting Indians and other H-1B workers in the U.S. While Air India did not comment on the unusual price surge, the mocking name of the campaign“Clog the Toilet” appeared to play on recent news of Air India flights diverted because of bathroom malfunctions.

For Indian Americans, it was another reminder of how online hate can spill over into real-world consequences.

West Indies Cricket: A Clinical Consult, Not a Eulogy

Earlier this week, Cricket West Indies (CWI) held a remarkably candid press conference, setting aside platitudes and inviting readers into their consulting room as the region’s cricket was treated like a patient in need. President Dr Kishore Shallow, CEO Chris Dehring, and Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe made no attempt to mask the symptoms—they called it what it is, a “chronic financial dilemma.”

Relief comes infrequently, often only when powerhouse nations such as India or England visit, akin to a steroid shot. Revenues from most series barely cover broadcast costs. The ICC’s global revenue-sharing formula remains a structural disadvantage for a multi-island board like CWI, limiting the ability to run a hectic calendar where “optimising resources” is more survival than choice.

Distress signals have grown sharper. Dehring referenced the infamous “27 all out” at Sabina Park and sobering losses to Nepal—episodes that reveal not just surface wounds but deeper weaknesses. The prognosis for 2025–26 is bleak, and the board, accustomed to hosting more than thirty events a year, now faces budget cuts. While players’ retainers remain protected, competitions and travel will be reduced. Each inter-island hop costs around US$200,000, forcing

consolidation of venues and appeals for government concessions.

The model itself is outdated, dating back to the 1960s, with operational costs outpacing income. Yet leadership is not resigned to decline. Drawing on the experience of Brian Lara and Sir Clive Lloyd, CWI is moving: appointing a full-time batting consultant, embedding sports psychologists, and accelerating plans for a high-performance centre at Coolidge, Antigua. Working groups are shaping a regional development framework, collaborating with governments and local boards, and reviewing the franchise system to address the documented “skill deficit” in batting.

Systematic care is now central. Women’s T20 and ODI formats will merge, supported by extended skills camps. The boys’ Under-17 is deferred to allow an expanded Under-19 programme across red- and white-ball formats. International preparations continue, with Sri Lanka, England, and the USA providing vital tests. The underlying diagnosis is clear. West Indies cricket is constrained by financial realities, inter-island logistics, and an ICC formula tilted against smaller boards. While raw talent abounds, especially in batting, turning potential into sustained international success remains elusive. The presence of Brian Lara, Sir Vivian

Richards, Sir Clive Lloyd, and Sir Richie Richardson is not nostalgia—they are active consultants, offering wisdom to guide renewal.

Real change must come from within. Transforming the boardroom culture, upgrading high-performance staffing, revamping coaching and selection frameworks, and strengthening commercial teams are as crucial as external lobbying. CWI is intensifying ICC engagement, reducing domestic travel costs, integrating mentalskills support, investing in infrastructure, and establishing commercial bridges in both the Caribbean and India. Player pathways are being redesigned with longer tactical and skills camps, expanded Under-19 exposure, and contracts aligned with global events while safeguarding retainers.

The next twelve to eighteen months are the acute phase—a sharp bend that requires braking before acceleration resumes in 2026–27. West Indies cricket is not to be mourned. With clear diagnosis and active treatment, the patient is fighting for recovery. The world needs West Indies cricket, but more importantly, the West Indies and their people need the game too. While the prognosis in the short term could be a bit murky, the long-term outlook for the chronic illness could well be manageable.

Dr. Nilesh Mehta
President Dr Kishore Shallow, CEO Chris Dehring, and Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe made no attempt to mask the symptoms—they called it what it is, a “chronic financial dilemma.”

SAHARA Annual Gala Raises Over $1.6 Million to Support Survivors

GARDEN GROVE, CA – SAHARA (South Asian Helpline and Referral Agency) hosted its annual fundraising gala on September 20 at the Delta Hotels by Marriott, welcoming 240 supporters for an evening of celebration, remembrance, and inspiration.

The gala raised vital funds to expand services for survivors of domestic violence, elder abuse, and trauma— including transitional housing for elders, two shelters, legal advocacy, counseling, and empowerment programs.

Guests were greeted during cocktail hour with the soothing sitar melodies of Ronobir before the evening officially opened with an informative video on SAHARA. David Palmer welcomed attendees in Hindi and Bengali, while emcee and auctioneer Miji Vellakateel, Governance Chair and Secretary of the board, energized the crowd with humor and warmth.

The highlight of the night came with extraordinary philanthropy: Manu and Rika Shah of The Shah Happiness Foundation pledged a $500,000 match and announced a $1 million gift, while Smita and Tarun Sanghvi contributed $100,000. With generous support from many others, SAHARA exceeded its fundraising goals.

A powerful skit by youth volunteers and staff portrayed survivors’ journeys from abuse to empowerment, showing how SAHARA’s comprehensive services—

housing, case management, mental health support, and economic independence—change lives. The performance closed with a message of resilience and shared responsibility.

“Once again, SAHARA has earned the highest recognition any nonprofit aspires to: the Platinum Seal from Candid, an honor awarded to only 20% of nonprofits,” said Executive Director Marisol Sanchez. “Domestic violence is not just a statistic. It’s a mother fleeing with her children. It’s a teenager learning that love should never hurt. When we come together as a community, we are stronger than violence. Change

Rep. Ro Khanna Faces Viral Donation Allegations After Epstein File Push

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) has long built his reputation as a progressive voice for transparency and anti-corruption reforms. But as online politics often shows, once a claim goes viral it can quickly take on a life of its own.

That is what Khanna faced after a recent social media post alleged he accepted “tens of thousands of American dollars” in campaign contributions from Mura Holdings LLC, an investment firm tied to his father-in-law, Monte Ahuja.

The controversy erupted just days after Khanna joined Republican Rep. Thomas Massie in demanding the “unsanitized release” of the Jeffrey Epstein files—a move viewed warily by supporters of former President Donald Trump, whose name is said to appear in the documents.

The post, circulated by Right Angle News Network, claimed Khanna benefited from donations “funneled” through his wife Ritu Ahuja’s parents and their company.

Khanna responded directly under the viral post on September 29:

“These are individual contributions from family members in my first races for Congress and we disclosed the employers. I do not take a dime of corporate money, PAC money, or lobbyist money!”

He later argued the attacks were politically motivated, linked to his outspoken positions on both Epstein and U.S. foreign policy.

“People are attacking me because I called for the Epstein files to be released and for Palestine to be recognized as a state. But I will hold my ground and continue to reject all special-interest money,” he wrote.

Khanna has consistently cast himself as a reformer on campaign finance. Earlier this year, he introduced the “Drain the Swamp Act”, legislation to bar lobbyists from giving gifts to White House officials—a pointed reminder of Trump’s unfulfilled 2016 pledge.

starts with us.”

Other highlights included a moving testimonial from a former client, a lighthearted presentation, Man Vs Woman, by Manu and Rika Shah, and artist Tanya Momi’s story of survival and empowerment, which inspired the film Designed by Preeti. As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, SAHARA will host a private screening of the film on October 5 at the Frida Theater in Santa Ana.

Looking ahead, SAHARA announced plans to expand its reach in 2026 by launching transitional housing for elder abuse survivors and culturally sensitive counseling programs. “Too many of our seniors—those who raised us and sacrificed for us—face neglect, isolation, and abuse. Our vision is a responsive senior home where elders can not only survive but thrive,” said Board President Krutika Pranav.

The evening concluded with warm thanks from Treasurer Vibhuti Bhuta and Vice President Kinnari Bhavsar, followed by a festive dinner from Mantra and lively music and dancing with 3D Sounds.

About SAHARA:

Founded in 1991, SAHARA provides culturally sensitive support to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and elder abuse. For more information, visit www.saharacares.org.

Council Votes to Oust Langevin Over Anti-India Remarks

PALM BAY, FL — A tense Palm Bay City Council meeting on October 2 drew an overflow crowd of angry residents and business leaders demanding the removal of Councilman Chandler Langevin. The outrage stemmed from Langevin’s social media posts calling for the deportation of Indian Americans—remarks that many described as racist and deeply offensive. According to NBC affiliate WESH, hundreds packed the council chambers and surrounding areas, with dozens stepping forward to condemn Langevin’s words. His comments, including “Deport every Indian immediately” and “There’s not a single Indian that cares about the United States,” were met with calls for his immediate resignation.

Speakers during the meeting expressed disgust and disappointment. One resident declared, “He has disrespected Palm Bay, Brevard County, the state of Florida, and our nation. Get this cancer removed.” Another criticized his behavior as an example of “hate, racism, and white supremacy.” Preshant Patel, president of the Indian American Business Association Chamber, reminded the council of the Indian American community’s economic and civic contributions, noting that they make up just over 1% of the population but contribute roughly 5–6% of U.S. income tax revenue. He urged the council to act swiftly to hold Langevin accountable.

Acclaimed musician Sachin Sanghvi offered a moving devotional performance, while Gurudevshri delivered discourses guiding seekers toward inner peace and growth. A major humanitarian initiative saw volunteers hand-pack more than 100,000 meals for communities worldwide struggling with hunger and malnutrition.

Virginia’s Subramanyam Declines Salary During Shutdown

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) announced on October 1 that he will forgo his congressional salary during the ongoing Republican-led government shutdown, standing in solidarity with more than 36,000 federal workers and contractors in his district.Subramanyam emphasized his dual focus on ending the shutdown and supporting those directly affected. He is also backing legislation to suspend congressional pay during shutdowns and to expand resources and benefits for federal employees and contractors left unpaid. “Government shutdowns are devastating to Virginia families and small businesses,” Subramanyam said.

“While Republicans force this shutdown and federal workers and contractors go without pay, I will not accept a paycheck

and will continue to stand up for the men and women who protect our communities. This shutdown was completely avoidable, and I will keep fighting for Virginians hurt by Republicans’ inability to pass a budget.”

His announcement reflects growing frustration among both lawmakers and the public over repeated shutdowns, which throw federal employees into financial uncertainty and disrupt critical services. By rejecting his own salary, Subramanyam joins a small but expanding group of legislators taking personal financial steps to protest the political stalemate. Subramanyam’s proposed legislation would mandate the automatic suspension of congressional pay during shutdowns while redirecting funds to support federal workers—a move he argues will reduce the toll of future shutdowns on everyday Americans.

Trump Threatens Mass Layoffs as Government Shutdown Continues

President Donald Trump is warning of mass federal layoffs as the government shutdown stretches into its sixth day, with nearly 900,000 employees already furloughed and another 700,000 working without pay. The deadlock in Congress shows no sign of breaking, as both parties remain divided over healthcare funding, Medicaid cuts, and foreign aid.

The Republican-led Senate is set to vote again on dueling spending bills -a GOP stopgap plan and a Democratic version but neither is expected to

secure the 60 votes needed to move forward. Meanwhile, essential services like Medicare and airport security continue, but agencies handling health, nutrition, and education programs are scaling back operations.

As the shutdown drags on, the financial strain on federal workers is mounting, markets are growing uneasy, and public frustration is rising. The longer the standoff lasts, the more it risks damaging both the economy and faith in Washington’s ability to govern.

Drones in the Sky, Sirens on the Ground: Trump’s Immigration Push Hits Chicago

CHICAGO, IL -The Trump administration has escalated its promise to crack down on illegal immigration in Chicago, the nation’s third-largest city. After weeks of warnings, federal presence became unmistakable this week. On Sunday, armed officers in camouflage patrolled downtown, drawing both stares and jeers. The following day, military officials confirmed that 100 National Guard troops would soon be mobilized to protect federal facilities. By early Tuesday, residents of a South Side apartment building awoke to helicopters, drones, trucks, and dozens of agents surrounding their homes in a sweeping pre-dawn raid.

“It felt like we were under siege,” recalled Darrell Ballard, 63, who recorded footage of officers storming the building. Federal officials said the target was a site linked to the Tren de Aragua gang. Nearly 300 agents participated, including snipers who rappelled onto rooftops. Authorities reported the arrest of 37 undocumented immigrants, some with criminal records. Since September, the

administration’s “Operation Midway Blitz” has detained more than 800 people in the region. Homeland Security officials defended the raids as efforts to remove “violent criminals and repeat offenders.” Yet immigrant advocates argued that citizens and nonviolent residents were swept up indiscriminately. DHS acknowledged that four U.S.-born children were taken into custody until guardians were found. Illinois leaders condemned the show of force.

Governor J.B. Pritzker labeled the deployment “jackbooted thugs roaming around a peaceful downtown” and accused the White House of intimidating communities. Mayor Brandon Johnson rejected what he called an attempt to militarize Chicago. “Chicagoans are not test subjects for the president to train our military,” he said.

President Trump, however, praised the operations before military leaders, describing American cities as “training grounds” for future conflicts.

Supporters such as former Republican senator

Darren Bailey called the moves necessary to protect federal officers. Alderman Raymond Lopez applauded the arrests, claiming those detained “will not be missed.”

The sight of military-style raids unsettled many residents. Protesters marched along Michigan Avenue denouncing ICE operations, while civil rights groups filed lawsuits over alleged violations of consent decrees restricting warrantless arrests. Critics warned that the growing military presence risks normalizing federal crackdowns in U.S. cities. Despite Chicago’s reputation for violence, crime has fallen sharply in recent years, with shootings and murders dropping nearly 50 percent. Officials say National Guard troops will not assist in policing crime but focus on securing immigration facilities. Still, many locals fear the true impact lies beyond arrests—deepening mistrust, disrupting families, and reshaping civic life under the shadow of federal force.

Each evening began with Garba, Aarti, and prayers to Goddess Amba Maa, followed by Prasad distribution. Later rounds of Garba and Raas led into a spirited Sanedo performance by Mahesh Mehta and his live band, which drew thunderous applause and joy from the audience. The centerpiece of the venue—a beautifully decorated stage featuring Amba Maa’s statue in a traditional temple setting—added a sacred aura, transporting attendees to the festive atmosphere of India.

The event also welcomed the participation of local business owners, community leaders, and public officials, who came to support IACFNJ’s mission of preserving and promoting Indian culture in New Jersey.

The celebrations were made possible through the generous support of sponsors, with Royal Basmati Rice – LT Foods and Daawat Basmati Rice serving as Grand Sponsors. They also sponsored two exciting contests for Best Dress and Best Dance, with winners receiving prizes presented by Kaushik Vyas and Shruti Shah from LT Foods on September 27.

The resounding success of the Grand Navratri Garba was a tribute to the tireless efforts of the IACFNJ Executive Committee, Trustees, volunteers, and community members, who worked together to create a memorable celebration of faith, culture, and unity.

Rockford Residents Join Secretary Giannoulias for 7th Driving Change Town Hall

CHICAGO, IL - As part of the Driving Change campaign, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias hosted his seventh virtual Town Hall Wednesday evening for Rockford residents, focusing on the rising cost of auto insurance. Across the first seven sessions, more than 850 Illinoisans have participated to learn about the issue and share personal experiences.

During the event, residents described sharp increases in their insurance premiums linked to factors such as moving to a new ZIP code, having a low credit score, or simply growing older— circumstances unrelated to their actual driving record. These virtual meetings, held over several weeks, are designed to gather input from Illinoisans that will help inform potential legislative reforms before the General Assembly.

“Our Driving Change virtual town hall visits have allowed us to hear from hundreds of residents, and the message could not be clearer: Illinoisans deserve more transparency,” Giannoulias said.

“The auto insurance rate-making system is broken, and hardworking families

are paying the price. To ensure fairness, insurance rates must be based on driving performance—not on where people live, their debt level, or their age.

That’s why we’re building a movement to pass reforms that are fair for everyone

and will help families save money.”

Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara echoed those concerns. “Ensuring fairness when it comes to car insurance is important to me, not only as a former insurance agent but as a public servant. I see residents struggling with skyrocketing costs every day. Thank you, Secretary Giannoulias, for prioritizing this issue. I look forward to working with you and the General Assembly on solutions to lower costs here in Rockford.”

The Driving Change campaign specifically targets insurance industry practices that rely on socio-economic data—such as credit history, ZIP code, and age—rather than driving behavior. Critics say these methods disproportionately harm drivers in disadvantaged neighborhoods and communities of color.

To advance reform, Giannoulias launched a website, www.ilsos.gov/ drivingchange , where residents can learn more, share their stories, and directly email their state legislators to urge action.

The campaign will continue with another Town Hall meeting scheduled in Springfield on October 15.

FBI Sweep Nets 8,600 Suspects Nationwide

WASHINGTON, DC — The FBI, working with state and local partners, arrested 8,629 suspects nationwide under Operation Summer Heat, a threemonth campaign targeting violent crime.

“We are not messing around,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “If you harm a child, steal a car, or flood neighborhoods with drugs, we’re coming for you.”

From June 24 to September 20, all 55 field offices took part, leading to over 6,500 gang-related arrests and the rescue of 1,053 child victims. Agents seized 44,569 kg of cocaine, 421 kg of fentanyl, and 2,281 firearms.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi hailed the effort, crediting it with removing thousands of violent offenders.

NY Incident Raises Alarms Over Press Rights

NEW YORK, NY - Federal agents clashed with journalists outside a New York City immigration court on Tuesday, resulting in one reporter being hospitalized. According to witnesses and video footage, agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) forcibly removed reporters from a public elevator at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan. During the altercation, L. Vural Elibol, a visual journalist for the Turkish news agency Anadolu, struck his head on the floor. Emergency responders placed him in a neck brace and transported him to a hospital, while two other journalists sustained less serious injuries.

Homeland Security officials defended the agents’ conduct, arguing that they were “swarmed” and obstructed while attempting to carry out an arrest. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said officers repeatedly instructed bystanders and members of the press to step back, accusing “agitators” and “sanctuary politicians” of creating unsafe conditions. Journalists on the scene, however, countered that they had worked in the courthouse hallways for months without incident and that no clear restrictions were announced prior to the scuffle.

Dean Moses of amNewYork described being forcibly grabbed and pulled from the elevator as he attempted to photograph an arrest. Freelance photographer Olga Fedorova recalled being shoved during the same confrontation, falling backward near where Elibol lay injured. She noted that journalists typically complied when officers asked them to maintain boundaries, but in this case, no clear warning was given. The episode came just days after another incident at the same courthouse where an agent was recorded shoving an Ecuadorian woman to the ground during her husband’s arrest. The confrontations have drawn sharp criticism from state leaders.

Governor Kathy Hochul denounced what she described as abuse of both immigrants and journalists, calling the incidents unacceptable. Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, a candidate for New York City mayor, warned that violence at 26 Federal Plaza was becoming routine and should not be tolerated in a public space meant for lawful proceedings. The incidents highlight the growing tensions between aggressive federal immigration enforcement and those attempting to monitor and report on its impact.

CBP Encourages Holiday Travelers to Prepare for Sukkot Journeys

WASHINGTON, DC — As the Jewish holiday of Sukkot approaches, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is reminding travelers to remain vigilant when crossing the nation’s ports of entry. From sundown on October 6 through nightfall on October 13, observant travelers may carry certain

religious items that are usually subject to agricultural restrictions. These include ethrogs, palm fronds (lulav), willow twigs (aravah), and myrtle twigs (hadassim). Such items may be permitted entry into the United States following inspection by CBP agriculture specialists. Travelers should be aware of the specific guidance for each item. Ethrogs may only enter through designated ports in the North Atlantic or Northern Pacific regions and must be unwrapped for inspection. Single palm fronds and myrtle twigs can be released if found free of pests or disease. Willow twigs of European origin are prohibited, but those from other regions may be allowed if they show no signs of pests or plant disease.

Bushra Amiwala Calls for Prompt End to Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. —The federal government entered a shutdown overnight after negotiations stalled between President Trump and Congressional leaders. Effective at 12:01am on October 1st, all government employees deemed “nonessential” will not be paid.

The White House has warned federal agencies to prepare for mass layoffs. President Trump told reporters that “we are going to cut a lot of people… on a permanent basis”.

Bushra Amiwala, the first Gen Z elected official in the country and candidate for Illinois’ 9th district, released the following statement:

“The president is intransigent. This shutdown will hurt all of us. Why? Because he will take the opportunity to fire thousands of federal workers.”

“These are the people who keep our roads passable, our air breathable and our water drinkable. They alert us when hurricanes and tornadoes are on the way. They make sure our medicine is safe, our airports are functioning and

our preschools stay open. In short: we need them.”

Congressional Democrats have resisted keeping the government open if doing so requires them to cut healthcare programs under the Affordable Care Act.

“Healthcare is the sticking point of these negotiations, as it should be! Democrats refuse to slash healthcare benefits that millions of Americans depend on,” said Amiwala, Skokie School District 73.5 Board Member. “This is callous political brinkmanship by my colleagues across

Minnesota Immigration Fraud Ring Busted by Federal Agents

MINNEAPOLIS,MN- The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) carried out an unprecedented fraud investigation in Minneapolis this month, targeting marriage and asylum scams through an operation dubbed Operation Twin Shield. Between September 19 and 28, officers knocked on doors at more than 900 sites across the Minneapolis–St. Paul region, reviewing over 1,000 cases. Working in coordination with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the FBI, USCIS identified fraud, noncompliance, or public safety concerns in 275 cases. Officials described the effort as the first of its kind since a new rule earlier this month expanded USCIS’ law enforcement authority. Of the flagged cases, 44 immigrants were either referred to ICE or served notices to appear in court, while two were detained on site. The remainder remain under investigation. Examples cited by USCIS included an immigrant who entered into a sham marriage with an elderly U.S. citizen while committing “elder abuse and exploitation,” and another who purchased a fabricated Kenyan death certificate for $100 to claim a spouse’s death — despite the spouse being alive and raising five children in Minneapolis. In another instance, a woman swore under oath that her marriage was legitimate, only to admit hours later that it was

fraudulent. One immigrant, the son of a suspected terrorist, had overstayed a visa waiver and was previously denied benefits for fraud.

USCIS Director Joseph Edlow framed the operation as part of a broader shift under President Donald Trump: “USCIS is declaring an all-out war on immigration fraud. We will relentlessly pursue everyone undermining the integrity of our system. With help from ICE and the FBI, Operation Twin Shield was a tremendous success.”

The Cedars-Riverside neighborhood was among the areas visited during the sweep. Officials emphasized that this was the first time USCIS had committed such extensive resources to one metropolitan area, signaling similar efforts could be repeated elsewhere. The operation was carried out under Executive Order 14161, which directs federal agencies to strengthen

protections against terrorism and public safety threats. Officials underscored that unlike under the Biden administration, USCIS officers are now empowered to thoroughly vet applicants and aggressively pursue fraud. With hundreds of cases still under administrative review, officials expect the number of court referrals, ICE handovers, and denials of immigration benefits to climb. The Minneapolis surge is being viewed internally as a model for future nationwide crackdowns.

the aisle. We cannot play games with lifesaving, essential health coverage.” The longest government shutdown occurred under the first Trump administration. It spanned 35 days from 2018 into 2019, forcing 800,000 federal employees to go without pay. There is no indication of when the government might reopen this time. “The president has not negotiated in good faith. And the longer this goes, the more lives he disrupts,” said Amiwala. “He does not care about the people who keep our country running. Those are the same people I’ll fight to protect in Congress.”

ICE Warns Shutdown Could Halt Border, Deportation Operations

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) clarified Wednesday that the federal government shutdown has not affected border security or immigration enforcement, emphasizing there is “NO CHANGE” to immigration laws and that illegal entry remains a crime. The agency warned that claims suggesting the shutdown allows unauthorized crossings are false.

While essential operations continue, thousands of federal workers are furloughed and non-critical government services are scaled back. President Trump framed the shutdown as a chance to cut “Democrat things,” while Congress remains deadlocked—Republicans push a short-term funding extension, and Democrats demand protection for expiring Obamacare subsidies.

The standoff highlights deep partisan divisions, leaving the duration and impact of the shutdown uncertain, with federal employees and the public bracing for ongoing disruption.

Bronx Apartment Partially Collapses After Gas Blast

NEW YORK, NY — Part of an apartment building in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx collapsed Wednesday morning following a suspected gas explosion, according to the FDNY.

The incident occurred around 8:10 a.m. at 205 Alexander Avenue, when firefighters were dispatched to reports of an explosion that caused the collapse of the building’s incinerator shaft.

Photos released by the FDNY show significant damage: one corner of the building caved in, collapsing vertically from the ground floor all the way up to the roofline. Despite the dramatic visuals, authorities confirmed that no residential units were directly affected by the collapse.

Mayor Eric Adams addressed the emergency on social media platform X, urging residents to avoid the area.

“I have been briefed about the emergency situation taking place in the Mott Haven area of the Bronx. We are getting a full assessment from first responders and will continue to provide updates,” Adams wrote.

Safety & Investigation

Officials stressed that, remarkably, no injuries have been reported. Emergency crews quickly secured the area, while inspectors from the Department of Buildings and utility provider Con Edison joined firefighters at the scene to ensure structural and gas line safety. The cause of the explosion has not yet been confirmed, and an investigation remains ongoing.

The 2026 edition will feature dozens of vetted nonprofits spanning education, health care, livelihoods, women’s and children’s programs, elder care, and environmental sustainability.

New Consul General Kicks Off Tenure with Viksit Bharat Run

CERRITOS, CA — The first community engagement of Dr. K. J. Srinivasa, newly appointed Consul General of India in Los Angeles, was marked by the Viksit Bharat Run 2025, held on September 28 at Don Knabe Community Regional Park.

Part of a global initiative in coordination with MY Bharat under India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the run in Cerritos attracted more than 200 participants, including members of the Indian diaspora, students, professionals, local leaders, and friends of India. Companion runs were also held in Irvine and Riverside, formally signaling the start of CGI Los Angeles’ outreach under Srinivasa’s leadership.

Themed “Run to Serve the Nation”, the event coincided with Seva Pakhwada (September 17–October 2) and joined over 150 international locations in celebrating service, fitness, and sustainability.

Flagging off the run, Dr. Srinivasa administered the Viksit Bharat and Aatmanirbhar Bharat pledges, underscoring the larger message behind the gathering.

“This event is more than a fitness activity—it celebrates the ideals of seva bhav and echoes the vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047. It embodies India’s Swadeshi ethos, highlighting the collective call for self-reliance, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility,” he said.

He praised the enthusiasm of the Southern California community, describing the run as a “powerful statement of collectiveness” that united diaspora engagement with youth mobilization. He further noted that the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — ‘the world is one family’ was reinforced through the event.

Local leaders including Artesia City Councilwoman Zeel Jignesh Ahir and Ashok Patnaik, Vice Chairman of Parks & Commissioner for Cerritos, joined the event, lauding the initiative for strengthening India–U.S. relations.

Several diaspora organizations partnered to ensure the success of the run, among them: Indian Association of Los Angeles, United Indian Associations of Southern California, Americans 4 Hindus, United Indian American Association, American Hindus for Humanity, ISHA Foundation, Overseas Friends of BJP, Telangana American Telugu Association, India International Impact, and Vibha.

Deepak Raj, IPA chairman and national co-chair of India Giving Day, emphasized that the platform ensures donor confidence: “Supporters can give knowing these organizations have been carefully reviewed.” Sejal Desai, executive director of Akanksha Education Fund and co-chair of the campaign’s steering committee, noted the rise in joint events: “Donors now have more opportunities to engage directly and discover which causes align most closely with their values.”

Organizers are encouraging Indian American families to pledge at least $100 during the March 1–13 campaign window, noting that broad participation could double the budgets of many participating nonprofits.

Sponsors of India Giving Day 2026 include the MacArthur Foundation, Jain Family Foundation, Avestar Capital, Sehgal Foundation, Wadhwani Impact Trust, Ujala Foundation, and the Raj Family Foundation.

Bushra Amiwala Raises $430K, Gains Momentum in IL-09 Race

SKOKIE, IL – Bushra Amiwala, candidate for Congress in Illinois’ 9th District and Skokie School District 73.5 Board member, announced raising over $430,000 in the third quarter of Fiscal Year 2025, reflecting a surge in grassroots support.

“I view every donation as both a gift and a responsibility,” Amiwala said. “I personally know nearly every individual who contributed— something no other candidate in this race can claim. These contributions show the strong faith people have in my campaign.” Over the past quarter, she hosted 140 meet-and-greets across the district.

Unlike opponents receiving corporate, lobbyist, and super PAC funds, Amiwala has pledged not to accept such contributions. “Special interests may have bought the loyalty of some candidates, but not mine. My role is to listen to constituents, partner with them, and solve problems together,” she said.

Residents Traumatized After Large Scale Immigration Raid on Chicago Apartments

Families were pulled from the building and children were loaded into U-Haul vans without their parents

CHICAGO, IL - In the early hours of Tuesday morning, chaos erupted at 7500 S. South Shore Drive when heavily armed federal agents descended on the five-story apartment building. Residents were jolted awake as agents in military gear battered doors and stormed into units, dragging out men, women, and children — some without clothes, according to neighbors. By sunrise, broken doors, scattered belongings, and missing residents told the story of one of Chicago’s largest immigration raids in recent years. Officials later confirmed that 37 people were arrested, though many others, including U.S. citizens, were detained for hours without clear explanation. 27-year-old resident, recalled hearing agents trying to break into his unit but going back to bed when they failed to get through his double lock. Hours later, he stepped into a hallway littered with splintered doors and found that his neighbors had vanished. When he returned home from work, he discovered his electronics and furniture gone, and his clothes thrown across the floor — with

Minivan Driver Charged After Fatal Midtown Crash, Killed 1, Injured 1

A 40-year-old Bronx man has been arrested and charged after police say he fatally struck a woman and critically injured her husband as they crossed a Midtown Manhattan street on Wednesday evening.

According to the NYPD, Mohammed Abouzaid, 40, was behind the wheel of a blue Toyota minivan when he hit the couple as they attempted to cross the street. Investigators said he failed to yield to pedestrians, and after the crash, he left the scene.

The victims, a 50-year-old woman and her 55-year-old husband, were visiting New York City from Germany, according to multiple reports. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband sustained a severe skull fracture and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Police located and arrested Abouzaid shortly afterward at West 38th Street and 8th Avenue. He has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death and failure to yield to a pedestrian or cyclist.

no answers from police about who took them. “I feel defeated because the authorities aren’t doing anything,” he said.

Others, like 67-year-old U.S. citizen described being zip-tied, dragged outside, and left restrained for nearly three hours before being released without explanation. Witnesses outside reported the presence of drones, helicopters, and flashbang grenades. Across the street, Ebony Sweets Watson watched in horror as families were pulled from the building and children were loaded into U-Haul vans without their parents. “Seeing kids coming out buck naked and taken from their mothers — it was horrible,” she said.

Federal officials claimed the operation was part of a targeted enforcement effort under “Operation Midway Blitz,” a Trump administration initiative. They alleged connections to drug trafficking and the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, though no evidence was presented to support those claims. Immigrant rights advocates condemned the raid as a violent, traumatic show of force that left residents displaced and fearful. Brandon Lee of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights called the operation “harmful and traumatic,” saying recovery for those who lived through it will be long and difficult.

Ambassador Shri Vinay Kwatra Pays Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti

WASHINGTON DC – -Ambassador

Shri Vinay Kwatra, joined by senior officials from the Embassy of India, offered floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, commemorating the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation.

This solemn ceremony followed a special commemorative program held on September 30, which celebrated Gandhi’s enduring legacy and brought together members of the Indian diaspora, students, professionals, and friends of India from across the region.

The event featured an inspiring keynote address by Srimati Karuna, Director of the Gandhi Memorial Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

Speaking on the theme “Gandhi’s Life and Message,” she reflected on

pivotal moments from Gandhi’s journey, the values that shaped his philosophy, and his timeless vision for nonviolence, truth, and global peace.

The program concluded with soulful musical renditions by young differently-abled artists, Anusha Manjunath and Vasundhara Raturi.
