GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN
Trump and Congress Fail to Reach a Deal
Zofeen Maqsood
During these crazy times, comes another bouncer –a Federal Government Shutdown! The Congress reached a deadlock after failing to reach a deal on funding. With both Republicans and Democrats on odds, the shutdown that was anticipated for the past few days has finally hit America. How the shutdown may begin showing its effects was somehow anticipated as a few days ago, the White House budget office had told federal agencies to be prepared for mass firings if government funding lapses.
What is a Government Shutdown
Every year, the congress has to pass a legislation to fund the federal government for the upcoming fiscal year. In a circumstance that the congress can’t reach an agreed process on time a shutdown happens. During a shutdown, the government has to put a halt to all non-essential and unfunded functions.
Why it Happened
The Congress has been at an impasse over government funding. While Democrats want to extend enhanced healthcare subsidies that about 22
Trump to Meet Xi in 4 Weeks
Washington: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in four weeks, with the soybean issue to be a significant topic of their discussion. The Soybean Farmers of our Country are being hurt because China is, for "negotiating" reasons only, not buying. We've made so much money on Tariffs, that we are going to take a small portion of that money, and help our Farmers. I WILL NEVER LET OUR FARMERS DOWN!
Sleepy Joe Biden…
He noted that farmers of the United States are being "hurt" as China, for "negotiating reasons", is not "buying" soybean and vowed to stand behind them. In a Truth Social post, US President Trump said, "The Soybean Farmers of our Country are being hurt because China is, for "negotiating" reasons only, not buying. We've made so much money on Tariffs, that we are going to take a small portion of that money, and help our Farmers. I WILL NEVER LET OUR FARMERS DOWN! White House Warns of Imminent Layoffs Amid Ongoing Shutdown
The US government faces mass layoffs of federal workers within two days as the first shutdown in nearly seven years continues. The shutdown began after Congress failed to pass a spending
plan, with Democrats pushing for healthcare guarantees and Republicans favoring a temporary funding measure. Essential workers will work without pay, while non-essential employees are furloughed. White House officials blamed Democrats for the standoff, while Democrats accused Republicans of refusing meaningful negotiations. Analysts predict up to 40% of federal staff—around 750,000 people—could be affected, and some permanent layoffs may follow if the shutdown drags on. Another vote on a short-term funding bill is expected Friday.
Walmart to Remove Artificial Colors, 30 Additives by 2027
Walmart said Wednesday that it plans to remove synthetic food dyes and 30 other ingredients, including some preservatives, artificial sweeteners and fat substitutes, from its store brands sold in the United States by January 2027. The move announced by the nation's largest retailer amounts to
an acknowledgment that American consumers and the US government under President Donald Trump are paying attention to what goes into packaged foods. Walmart said its goal would affect about 1,000 products, including salty snacks, baked goods, power drinks, salad dressings and frosting. Several of the ingredients on Walmart's removal list, however, already are banned, not widely used or have not been used in the US food supply for decades. Others were included despite no known problems or have been targeted by the Trump administration for review and possible elimination as an approved food additive, according to food safety experts.

For those who may not remember, this is not the first time we are experiencing a shutdown. It was during President Donald Trump’s first term, that the last shutdown happened. It may be noted that it started in December 2018 and ran for 35 days – making it the country’s longest on record shutdown.
Some Relief
It may bring relief to people that shorter shutdowns do not have any lasting impact and does not disrupt any major functions.
Trump Unveils Pfizer Discount Deal Through ‘TrumpRx’ Website
Pfizer has agreed to lower the cost of prescription drugs for Medicaid under a deal struck with the Trump administration, President Donald Trump said Tuesday as he promised similar deals with other drugmakers under the threat of tariffs.
Trump made the announcement at the White House alongside Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla just hours ahead of a possible government shutdown in a partisan standoff over health care and spending.
Pfizer Inc., one of the largest US drugmakers, produces the COVID-19 vaccine Comirnaty and the treatment Paxlovid. Its products also include several cancer drugs, the blood thinner Eliquis and Prevnar pneumonia vaccines.
Under the deal, New York-based Pfizer will charge most-favoured-nation pricing to Medicaid and guarantee that pricing on newly launched drugs, Trump said. That involves matching the lowest price offered in other developed nations.

A new China tech visa has caught India's attention - now locals aren't happy
HiIndia Newsdesk
China’s new K visa, aimed at attracting foreign STEM professionals, has sparked widespread attention and controversy. Launched in August and effective Wednesday, the visa allows applicants to live, study, and conduct research in China without needing a local employer’s backing. Its flexibility in duration and multiple entries has drawn comparisons to the US H-1B visa, particularly by Indian media, as Indians dominate H-1B recipients. The coverage triggered intense debate on Chinese social media. Many users expressed concern that bringing in foreign professionals would increase competition in a job market already saturated with highly educated domestic talent. Some questioned whether foreigners could adapt to China’s language and political environment, while others made xenophobic remarks targeting Indian nationals. State media stepped in to quell concerns, with the Global Times

Those Who Remain In Gaza City Will Be Considered Terrorists, Warns Israel
Israel issued a final warning Wednesday for people to flee Gaza's main city, as Hamas weighed US President Donald Trump's plan to end nearly two years of war in the Palestinian territory. Witnesses reported heavy bombardment in Gaza City, as Israel's defence minister, Israel Katz, said the army was tightening its encirclement of the city.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said intensified military operations had forced it to temporarily suspend activities in Gaza City.
"This is the last opportunity for Gaza residents who wish to do so to move south and leave Hamas operatives isolated in Gaza City," Katz posted on X, warning that those who remained would "be considered terrorists and terrorist supporters". Katz said the military had seized the Netzarim corridor, linking central Gaza to the western coast, effectively cutting the north of Gaza off
from the south.Anyone leaving Gaza City for the south would have to pass through Israeli military checkpoints, he added. The announcement came hours after the military said it was closing the last remaining route for people to travel from southern Gaza to the north.
In Gaza City, 60-year-old Rabah alHalabi, sheltering in a tent on the grounds of Al-Shifa Hospital, described relentless explosions.
"I will not leave because the situation in Gaza City is no different from the situation in the southern Gaza Strip," he told AFP by telephone. "All areas are dangerous, the bombing is everywhere, and displacement is terrifying and humiliating," he said.
Trump Vows To Defend Qatar, Says Attack On Doha A Threat To US
The United States will regard "any armed attack" on Qatari territory as a threat to Washington and will provide the Gulf Arab state with security guarantees, the White House said, after an Israeli strike on the country last month.
"In light of the continuing threats to the State of Qatar posed by foreign aggression, it is the policy of the United States to guarantee the security and territorial integrity of the State of Qatar against external attack," said an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump on Monday.
In the event of an attack on Qatar, the United States will "take all lawful and appropriate measures -- including
diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military -- to defend the interests of the United States and of the State of Qatar and to restore peace and stability," the order said.
The agreement comes after an Israeli
strike on the key US regional ally on September 9, targeting officials from the Palestinian armed group Hamas who were discussing a US peace proposal for the war in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Qatar's prime minister from the White House on Monday, apologising for strikes and promising not to do so again, the United States said.
Netanyahu was in Washington to meet Trump and had until then been defiant since ordering the September 9 strikes.
Qatar is a key US ally in the Gulf and hosts the largest US military base in the region at al-Udeid, which also includes a regional headquarters for elements of US Central Command.
mathematics. Authorities emphasize that it is not a simple work permit, but a program to facilitate education, research, and entrepreneurship. Full details on eligibility, age limits, and scope of activities remain unclear, leaving questions about whether it truly allows foreigners to work in China. The timing of the K visa coincides with the US raising H-1B application fees, prompting some skilled workers to reconsider destinations. China’s broader push to attract international talent includes visa exemptions for 75 countries and recruitment of high-profile academics from abroad. Experts note that while the initiative is part of China’s strategic effort to draw global talent, challenges remain, including language barriers and adapting to the country’s controlled political environment. Success will depend not only on regulatory design but also on public acceptance and creating an environment conducive to innovation.
UK to Toughen 5-Year Path to Permanent Residency
Britain will tighten immigration rules, ending automatic settlement and family reunion rights for asylum seekers. Refugees, who currently qualify for permanent residence after five years, will face a longer process requiring contributions to Britain, clean records, English proficiency, and community volunteering. Family reunion rights will also be restricted. Full details will be announced later.
Mobile, Data Networks Return Across Afghanistan
Mobile networks returned to several provinces across Afghanistan on Wednesday, including the capital Kabul, 48 hours after the Taliban authorities shut down telecommunications.
Confusion gripped the South Asian country on Monday night when mobile phone service and the internet went down.
The massive blackout came weeks after the government began cutting highspeed internet connections to some provinces to prevent "immorality", on the orders of shadowy supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada.AFP journalists reported on Wednesday that mobile phone signals and wifi had returned to provinces across the country.

Messi Joins GOAT Tour India 2025
Lionel Messi on Thursday confirmed his participation in the much-anticipated GOAT Tour of India 2025, calling it an "honour" to revisit the "passionate football nation" country where he last played 14 years ago. "It is such an honour for me to make this trip. India is a very special country, and I have good memories from my time there 14 years ago -- the fans were fantastic. "India is a passionate football nation, and I look forward to meeting a new generation of fans while sharing the love I have for this beautiful game," Messi said in an official statement. The organisers had already unveiled the itinerary on August 15, and Messi’s statement on Thursday marked the first time the football icon himself confirmed the visit.
Taiwan Refuses 50% Chip Production in U.S.
Taiwan has rejected proposals to produce 50% of its semiconductor chips in the United States, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining domestic manufacturing capacity. Officials stated that while Taiwan is open to international partnerships and expanding global supply chains, relocating such a significant portion of production abroad is neither feasible nor in line with national interests. The announcement comes amid ongoing U.S. efforts to secure semiconductor supply and reduce reliance on foreign sources, highlighting tensions between strategic collaboration and domestic industrial priorities. Experts say Taiwan’s stance could complicate U.S. efforts to bolster its semiconductor industry and reduce dependence on East Asian supply chains. While American policymakers have encouraged overseas production through incentives and partnerships.
PM Modi Praises RSS Role in Freedom Struggle Opposition Criticizes
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday projected the RSS as a key cog in the country’s fight for independence, taking it upon himself to dispel the widely held belief that the outfit had sided with the British.
Speaking at the centenary celebrations of the RSS at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre here, Modi said:
“If we look at the freedom struggle, many workers, including the most revered (RSS founder) Dr Hedgewarji, participated in the freedom movement. Doctor Sahib went to jail several times.
The Sangh protected many freedom fighters and worked shoulder-toshoulder with them. In 1942, when
the movement against the British was launched in Chimur, many volunteers faced severe atrocities.”
According to historical records, the RSS stayed away from the Quit India movement — of which the agitation in Chimur (currently in Maharashtra) was a part — and encouraged its members to join the Civic Guard, a colonial equivalent of the Home Guards.
The RSS has frequently faced intense criticism from the Opposition over its role in the freedom struggle and its refusal for long to hoist the Tricolour, with the BJP’s rivals using this to question the party’s much-vaunted nationalistic credentials.
Russia Snubs India, Supplies Fighter Jet Engines to Pakistan
Russia has reportedly agreed to supply fighter jet engines to Pakistan, while reportedly denying a key defense request from India, raising strategic concerns in New Delhi. Indian defense officials had sought advanced components and technology upgrades from Russia to support their fleet modernization programs. Sources suggest that Moscow’s decision to prioritize Pakistan’s requirements over India’s could impact ongoing joint defense projects and complicate India’s procurement timelines. Analysts say the move highlights Russia’s careful balancing act in South Asia, aiming to maintain influence with both countries without overtly alienating either side. While India remains a major importer of Russian military equipment, Pakistan has increasingly benefited from supply agreements, including fighter jet maintenance, training, and engine deliveries. The Indian Ministry of Defence has not yet issued an official statement regarding the reports. Experts suggest this development may accelerate India’s efforts to diversify its defense procurement sources beyond Russia to ensure timely modernization of its armed forces.
US Shutdown Could Trigger Job Crisis: 43,000 Faces Unemployment Risk
The United States has entered a government shutdown, and economic advisors to former President Donald Trump have warned that a prolonged closure could have severe economic consequences. According to White House memos, if the shutdown continues on a weekly basis, the U.S. GDP could suffer losses of up to $15 billion. If the shutdown stretches for a month, an additional 43,000 people could lose their jobs. This figure does not include the 1.9 million federal employees who are either working without pay or on furlough, 80% of whom are based in Washington, D.C. White House aides indicated that the memo will be sent to Republican lawmakers to guide their political strategy during the shutdown. The dispute in Congress centers on funding for ObamaCare subsidies, with Trump administration officials claiming that the subsidies could go to undocumented immigrants.
White House spokesperson Kush Desai said, “The real economic consequences of the government shutdown fall on Senate Democrats, who are holding the federal government, the economy, and the nation hostage to provide free healthcare to illegal immigrants.” Republican leaders at various levels are attempting to unify and place the blame on Democrats. Recent surveys suggest that while the public currently holds Republican lawmakers responsible, a significant number of people blame both parties. The shutdown comes amid renewed scrutiny of Trump’s tariff policies and their economic impact. Data released by payroll company ADP on Wednesday showed that 32,000 private-sector jobs were lost in September. A four-page report from the Council of Economic Advisers warned that a monthlong shutdown could reduce consumer spending by $30 billion, with about half of the impact falling directly on federal employees and the rest spreading across other sectors.

Pfizer to offer cheaper drugs via Trump's website
The Trump administration has announced a deal allowing patients to buy prescription drugs at discounted prices via a new website operated by the federal government.
The agreement with pharmaceutical giant Pfizer will see prices for some medicines slashed by up to 85% on the direct-to-consumer TrumpRx site, the White House said in a press conference on Tuesday.
Pfizer also agreed to lower prescription drug prices for the state-run Medicaid program, the government's public health insurance plan for low-income Americans, in a move that will see the company avoid paying tariffs.
Trump renews threat to impose 100% tariffs on non-US made movies

Musk becomes world's first half-trillionaire
Tesla boss Elon Musk has become the first person ever to achieve a net worth of more than $500bn (£370.9bn), as the value of the electric car company and his other businesses have risen this year.
The tech magnate's net worth briefly reached $500.1bn on Wednesday afternoon New York time, before dipping slightly to just over $499bn later in the day, the Forbes' billionaires index reported.
Alongside Tesla, valuations of his other ventures, including the artificial intelligence startup xAI and rocket company SpaceX, have also reportedly climbed in recent months.
The milestone further cements Musk's status as the world's richest person, well ahead of rivals in the global tech sector. According to Forbes' billionaires index, Oracle founder Larry Ellison is the world's second richest person, with a fortune of about $350.7bn.
Mr Ellison briefly overtook Musk last month after shares in Oracle soared by more than 40%, boosted by the firm's surprisingly rosy outlook for its cloud infrastructure business and artificial intelligence (AI) deals.
Musk's huge wealth is closely tied to his more than 12% stake in Tesla, which has seen its shares rise sharply this year.
Tesla shares were more than 3.3% higher at the end of New York trading on Wednesday and have now risen by over 20% this year.
The company's shares have been making gains in recent months as investors welcome Musk focusing more time on his companies rather than politics.
He faced criticism earlier this year over his work with the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the body tasked with reducing US government spending and cutting jobs. Musk, who also owns the X social media platform, has also been vocal about his views on issues such as immigration and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programmes. The chair of Tesla's board, Robyn Denholm, said in September that Musk was now "front and centre" at the carmaker.
India-UAE Economic Ties Strengthen with Rising Trade and Strategic Investments
HiIndia Newsdesk
India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are demonstrating how a high-trust relationship can translate into highimpact outcomes. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), signed in 2022, has not remained a document of intent; it has become an engine for growth. During CII’s high-powered CEOs Delegation to the UAE on September 18-19, 2025, timed with the 13th meeting of the India-UAE High-Level Joint Task Force on Investments, the message from both sides was unequivocal: this is a partnership moving from promise to performance. The economic signals are compelling. India-UAE bilateral trade climbed to $100.06 billion in 2024-25, up from $72.87 billion in 2020-21. More significant is the structural shift underway. Non-oil trade surged to $37.6 billion in the first half of 2025, a 33.9% jump over the same
period last year. This is not incidental growth; it reflects deliberate policy choices and business confidence, with momentum extending into electronics, chemicals, machinery, smartphones, and other higher-value-added sectors.
At the core of this progress is market access — faster, wider, and more predictable. CEPA has reduced tariffs, streamlined customs, and opened up the UAE market to over 10,000 Indian goods. For Indian manufacturers, especially MSMEs, this is a critical opening. Lower landed costs and quicker clearances are translating into improved competitiveness, larger shelf space, and more resilient order books. These benefits ripple through the domestic economy, catalysing jobs not only on factory floors but across logistics, compliance, packaging, quality assurance, design and after-sales services.
Chinese woman convicted after 'world's biggest' bitcoin seizure
A Chinese national, Zhimin Qian, also known as Yadi Zhang, has pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court, London, to illegally acquiring and possessing cryptocurrency in what is believed to be the world’s largest cryptocurrency seizure, valued at over £5bn ($6.7bn).
Between 2014 and 2017, Qian orchestrated a large-scale scam in China, defrauding more than 128,000 victims and storing the stolen funds in bitcoin. A seven-year investigation by the Metropolitan Police led to the seizure of 61,000 bitcoins. Qian had fled China using false documents and entered the UK, attempting to launder the proceeds by purchasing property. She was aided by Jian Wen, a Chinese takeaway worker, who was jailed last year for her role in laundering funds, including buying properties in North London and Dubai worth over £500,000. More than £300m in bitcoin was seized from Wen.
Qian’s schemes, targeting mostly older investors, promised guaranteed profits through cryptocurrency investments. She was referred to as the “goddess of wealth” by victims. Authorities described the case as an example of how cryptocurrencies are exploited by organised crime. The investigation remains ongoing, with efforts focused on preventing the fraudsters from accessing stolen funds. Some victims have received partial compensation through a scheme set up in China. Qian remains in custody ahead of sentencing, which is yet to be scheduled.
YouTube to pay $24.5m to settle Trump lawsuit over Capitol riot
YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5m (£18.6m) to settle a lawsuit brought by Donald Trump, filed after the video platform suspended his account in the wake of the 6 January attack on US Capitol.
The settlement from the video streaming giant's parent company Alphabet - which also owns Google - comes after social media sites X/Twitter and Facebook also agreed to pay Trump for suspending his accounts. Trump had accused YouTube and other tech companies of political bias, claiming they had unfairly censored conservative voices after the Capitol riot in 2021.
At the time of his suspension, social media companies said that Trump risked inciting further violence in Washington DC.

US Government Shuts Down: What’s Open and Closed
US government shuts down, halting nonessential services while essential functions like hospitals, law enforcement, and Social Security continue.
Washington: The US government has shut down after Democrats blocked a Republican stopgap funding bill. Funding expired at midnight, marking the first shutdown since 2018. Nonessential workers are furloughed, while essential staff, including military personnel, must work without pay. Up to 750,000 federal employees could be affected.
Critical services like hospitals, law enforcement, air-traffic control, border protection, Social Security, Medicare, NASA missions, and public health operations will continue. Nonessential functions— food assistance, inspections, student loans, immigration hearings, and national parks— may halt or delay.
The deadlock stems from Democrats seeking permanent ACA subsidies, while Republicans want separate solutions. President Trump raised stakes, threatening layoffs and withholding funds. With no compromise yet, the shutdown’s duration and impact on public services and the economy remain uncertain.
I love tariffs
It's "Making America Rich": Trump
HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington: US President Donald Trump has defended his much-criticised trade policy, saying 'tariff' is his favourite word in the English dictionary and credited it for making America 'rich'. He argued that many other nations had been taking advantage of the US for years, but his tariffs on trading partners have restored fairness in trade.
"I love tariffs. Most beautiful word, but I'm not allowed to say that anymore. Tariff is my favourite word. I love the word tariff. We're becoming rich as hell. We have a big case in front of the Supreme Court, but I can't imagine it because this is what other nations have
done to us," the US President said while speaking at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico. Trump claimed that the United States was making "trillions of dollars" under his tariff policy -- money "enough to buy a lot of battleships". "We've taken in trillions of dollars. We're rich again. When we finish this out, there'll never be any wealth like what we have. Other countries were taking advantage of us for years and years... Now we're treating them fairly. But the money coming in is something we've never seen. The other day, they had $31 billion that they found... $31 billion. That's enough to buy a lot of battleships," he said.

US President Donald Trump claimed that he brokered a truce between India and Pakistan during a military conflict earlier this year, stating that Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, credited him with "saving millions of lives" by preventing the war. Speaking to military leaders in Quantico, Trump said he was honored by Munir’s acknowledgment and described the encounter as “the most beautiful thing,” with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles present. He added that the conflict “was going to get very bad” and also claimed that his administration resolved seven wars during his nine months in office.
Indian Woman Tearfully Leaves US After Layoff
Ananya Joshi, an Indian national who had been working in the United States under the F-1 OPT program, recently shared an emotional farewell as she departed the country following a job layoff. Trump Hike in H-1B Fee May Push US Firms to Shift Work to India
Bengaluru/Hyderabad: US President Donald Trump’s recent hike in H-1B visa fees, from $2,000–$5,000 to $100,000, is prompting American companies to accelerate the transfer of critical operations to India, experts say. Economists and industry insiders see this as a boost for India’s 1,700 global capability centres (GCCs), which handle everything from finance to research and development.

Gandhi Statue Near London University Vandalised, India Responds
London: Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Tavistock Square, London, was defaced on Monday, just days before the annual Gandhi Jayanti celebrations are scheduled to take place at the site on October 2. The High Commission of India has strongly condemned the incident, calling it a "shameful act" and an assault on the legacy of nonviolence. In a post on X, the Indian mission said the desecration was reported to the local authorities, even as its officials were on

in-house rather than outsourcing. Lalit Ahuja, CEO of ANSR, noted a sense of urgency among corporations, citing a “gold rush” to expand Indiabased operations. Big Tech, including Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, and Google, along with banks and retailers like JPMorgan Chase and Walmart, have major Indian operations and are closely monitoring the situation. While visa restrictions and proposed US legislation like the HIRE Act could impact outsourcing and India’s IT exports, surging GCC demand may offset losses. Nomura analysts suggested that GCCs could help US firms bypass immigration limits while sustaining India’s services exports, cushioning the industry from potential setbacks.

"We Wanted To Play With Dignity": Suryakumar Yadav
India Refuses Asia Cup Trophy From ACC Chief Mohsin Naqvi
After India defeated Pakistan in the Asia Cup final, the winning team refused to accept the trophy from ACC chief and Pakistan minister Mohsin Naqvi, causing an unusual delay in the presentation ceremony. While individual performers were recognized, the trophy remained with the organizers as Indian players stood off the stage and fans booed Naqvi. The team reportedly communicated that they would only accept the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board officials. The incident highlighted the lingering

political tensions between the two nations, with Indian players avoiding customary handshakes and pre-toss photos with Pakistani counterparts throughout the tournament. Despite the delay, fans continued to cheer for India, chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” marking a rare moment in cricket history where a winning team did not receive its trophy on the field.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav reflected on India’s Asia Cup 2025 final win over Pakistan, saying the team focused on playing with dignity despite provocations from Pakistan players. “We never made any gestures or hand movements. We wanted to play the game with dignity and keep emotions aside,” he said, emphasizing the importance of effort over external distractions.
SKY also praised the BCCI for supporting the team throughout the tournament. He highlighted the role of India’s training facilities, including the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru, in preparing players despite gaps in match practice.
“BCCI stood ahead of us and gave us ample support. It’s our duty to give it back by playing good cricket and winning trophies,” he added, noting that the team is ready to take the next leap in Indian cricket.
Thousands Protest Against Shehbaz
Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is witnessing massive protests as the Awami Action Committee (AAC) launched a “shutter-down and wheel-jam” strike across the region, drawing thousands to the streets to demand political and economic reforms, including the abolition of 12 legislative seats for Kashmiri refugees and fairer power tariffs. The demonstrations follow a breakdown in talks between AAC negotiators, the PoK administration, and federal ministers, with the committee refusing to compromise on key demands. Authorities have responded with a heavy security presence, including flag marches, deployment of troops from Punjab, and a cut in internet access to curb mobilisation, while traders prepared for the shutdown by stocking up on essentials.
Top Trump Aide Says “US Will Have to Fix Issues With India”
The United States will have to “fix” several countries, including India, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said, highlighting ongoing trade tensions. Lutnick also cited Switzerland, which runs a $40 billion trade surplus with the US, as an example of imbalances that need addressing.

an additional 25 per cent due to India’s continued Russian oil purchases. Key sectors affected include garments, gems and jewelry, footwear, sporting goods, furniture, and chemicals. Brazil faces similar tariffs.
Lutnick stressed that countries like India and Brazil must align with US expectations to access American markets. Several trade negotiations remain ongoing, including with Taiwan, but resolving India and Brazil’s issues remains a priority. India and the US have recently resumed talks, with a delegation led by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal meeting US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor to explore a potential trade agreement.

Why Stress Tests Beat ECGs in Detecting Heart Risks
In a recent podcast, renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Ramakanta Panda criticized the widespread use of electrocardiograms (ECGs) for diagnosing heart disease, labeling them as “the most useless test” for detecting potential heart issues. He emphasized that while ECGs can identify abnormalities during episodes of pain or after a heart attack, they fail to detect critical blockages in asymptomatic individuals. Dr. Panda recommended stress tests, such as treadmill tests, as more effective tools for assessing heart health, especially in patients without overt symptoms.
Echoing Dr. Panda’s sentiments, Dr. Saumya Sekhar Jenasamant, a consultant cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon at KIMS Hospitals in Thane, explained that ECGs measure the electrical activity of the heart at rest. While they are useful for detecting rhythm disturbances or previous heart attacks, they do not reveal decreased blood flow to the heart unless the patient is currently experiencing distress. This limitation makes ECGs less reliable for identifying heart disease risk in individuals without symptoms. Stress tests, on the other hand, evaluate how the heart performs under physical exertion,

providing valuable insights into its function and potential issues that may not be apparent at rest. These tests can uncover problems such as reduced blood flow or arrhythmias that could indicate underlying heart disease. By simulating real-life stress conditions, stress tests offer a more comprehensive assessment of heart health, particularly for individuals who are asymptomatic but at risk due to factors like family history, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
Healthcare professionals are increasingly advocating for stress testing as a primary diagnostic tool for heart disease risk assessment. While ECGs remain valuable for certain clinical scenarios, they should not be solely relied upon for detecting heart disease, especially in patients without symptoms. Incorporating stress tests into routine evaluations can lead to earlier detection and better management of cardiovascular health, potentially preventing serious complications in the future. As heart disease continues to be a leading cause of mortality, particularly in India, adopting more effective diagnostic methods is crucial. Patients and healthcare providers alike are encouraged to consider stress testing as a more reliable approach to assessing heart disease risk, ensuring timely intervention and improved outcomes.
Shah Rukh Khan, 59, Stays Fit on 3
Foods a Day
Even at 59, Shah Rukh Khan stays remarkably fit and youthful, largely thanks to a simple diet focused on three core foods: sprouts, grilled chicken, and broccoli, with occasional dal.
• Sprouts: High in fiber and nutrients, they support gut health and smooth digestion.
• Grilled chicken: Provides lean protein essential for muscle maintenance, repair, and overall energy.
• Broccoli: Packed with fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, it helps reduce inflammation and improves skin clarity.
Gastroenterologist Dr. Pal Manickam explains that SRK’s diet works because gut health is central to overall wellness, impacting energy levels, skin, and ageing. He advises portion control even when following this minimal, nutrientrich approach.
Occasionally, SRK adds a little dal, which offers plant-based protein, fiber, and minerals, further balancing the diet.
This three-food routine, combined with moderation, is credited with helping the superstar maintain his physique and youthful energy despite a hectic schedule. SRK continues to stay active while shooting for upcoming projects like King with daughter Suhana Khan and a cameo in son Aryan Khan’s Netflix directorial debut.

Jail Holds Sonam Wangchuk
Amid Activist
Hunger Strike Threat
Ladakh statehood activist Sonam Wangchuk, arrested under the National Security Act, has been shifted to Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan, a highsecurity facility with CCTV-monitored solitary cells. The British-era prison has previously housed high-profile inmates like Salman Khan and Asaram Bapu, as well as terrorists and separatist leaders. Officials believe the transfer aims to prevent protests by Wangchuk’s supporters in Ladakh.
Outside the jail, activist Vijaypal threatened a hunger strike in protest of Wangchuk’s arrest but was detained by
police. Wangchuk faces allegations of inciting a mob during violent statehood protests in Ladakh that left four dead and over 50 injured.
The Ministry of Home Affairs also cancelled registration of Wangchuk’s non-profit SECMOL under the FCRA, claiming irregular foreign funding. Wangchuk denied wrongdoing, calling it a misunderstanding. His arrest has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, including Jammu & Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah, who called it “unfortunate” and questioned the government’s handling of the situation.

The actor took to social media to share a statement from the film’s makers clarifying that The Taj Story does not touch upon any religious matters, nor does it suggest that a Shiv temple exists within the Taj Mahal. “The makers of the film The Taj Story clarify that the movie does not deal with any religious matters, nor does it claim that a Shiv temple resides within the Taj Mahal. Salman Khan Takes Dig at Abhinav Kashyap on Podcasts
In the latest Bigg Boss 19 Weekend Ka Vaar episode, Salman Khan surprised contestant Tanya Mittal with a grand birthday gift, a royal singhasan, leaving her emotional and expressing her wish to feel safe in Mumbai with Salman like family. However, the celebrations took a serious turn when Salman subtly addressed director Abhinav Kashyap’s recent allegations. He remarked, “People I’ve had connections with — even those who once praised me — are now sitting around and saying all sorts of nonsense. These days, people go on podcasts and talk rubbish just because they don’t have any work. My request to all of you is, please, get some work.” The comments came after Abhinav Kashyap, director of Dabangg, claimed in a podcast that Salman took undue credit for the film and allegedly manipulated situations on past projects, including making things difficult for Abhinav’s brother, Anurag Kashyap, on Tere Naam.
writing, “Taj Mahal—Symbol of Love becomes the symbol of Hate!!! Stupid n unnecessary n sad n pathetic controversy!” He captioned his re-tweet, “A tweet by someone who just made a propaganda film on Taj Mahal being ‘Tejo Mahalya’!!” The Taj Story, directed as a hard-hitting social drama, is led by a powerhouse ensemble including Paresh Rawal, Zakir Hussain, Amruta Khanvilkar, Sneha Wagh, and Namit Das. The film raises a provocative question: “Even after 79 years of Independence, are we still slaves of intellectual terrorism?” The narrative combines social commentary with a reexamination of historical facts, distinguishing itself from conventional period or historical films. The soundtrack has been composed by Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dev Nath, adding to the film’s intense tone. The Taj Story is slated for a nationwide release on October 31, 2025.

Ranbir
Rajat Bedi Talks
SRK’s Support, Comeback
Rajat Bedi made a strong comeback after more than 15 years with Aryan Khan’s directorial debut The Ba***ds of Bollywood. He played Jaraj Saxena, a fading actor trying to stay relevant, and earned wide praise for his performance — climbing up to the top 10 in IMDb India rankings. In interviews with Hindustan Times, The Indian Express, and others, Rajat recalled what led him back, his talks with Shah Rukh Khan, and a condition he insisted on before accepting the role. Rajat said the feedback had been overwhelming and that both critics and audiences were appreciating his performance more than ever. “My whole family saw the reception. I felt very blessed,” he shared. He added that people from the industry also contacted him: director Vivek Agnihotri messaged him, “What a great resurrection,” while Harshvardhan Rane also reached out.
Rajat reflected that his character — especially a line from the show, “Haarne aur har maanne mein farak hota hai” (“There’s a difference between losing and accepting defeat”) — seemed to resonate with many. He
Kapoor Turns 43
He celebrates his 43rd birthday on September 28, the day Lata Mangeshkar was born. And like Lata, Ranbir Kapoor is special. Very special! Why do we say that? It is simply because he has made a chain of ‘Special Appearances’ himself. And (forget multi-star movies Raajneeti and Animal), a chain of special names all have made equally ‘Special Appearances’ in many a Ranbir Kapoor movie. Ranbir, however, had his own share of ‘Special Appearances’. As himself, he paid a video tribute to his late father, Rishi Kapoor, in the latter’s last film, Sharmaji Namkeen. Ranbir was himself also in Govinda Naam Mera in a song and was just a voice reciting poetry in Fuddu (2016) but had a proper cameo in Love per Square Foot (2018).
said, “I have technically come back after 20 years, and people are noting my patience, determination, and now look at my comeback. That latter part has inspired many… It has had a positive impact, and it’s all due to Aryan.” He admitted that for about three years he had been looking for meaningful work, unaware that Aryan had the character in mind. Aryan contacted him and invited him to his office. Rajat said Aryan was certain he wanted him for the part, partly because Aryan had been a fan of Koi... Mil Gaya when he was younger. Rajat felt that his own life had echoes in the character: someone who had been on the edges of fame and was now trying to reclaim a place. Rajat also pointed out that some scenes in The Ba***ds of Bollywood — like the mocking device and a basketball moment — drew on nostalgia from his earlier career, including references to Koi... Mil Gaya.
Despite being flattered by the offer, Rajat put forth one condition. He said, “Aryan, I’ll do this only if my son assists you.” He believed in full circle: he had once started his career connected to Shah Rukh Khan’s generation, and he wanted his son, Vivaan Bedi, to start with Aryan. Aryan agreed. Vivaan then assisted on the show for two years. Rajat also recalled having spoken to Shah Rukh Khan, asking, “Sir, what has your son made?” Shah Rukh’s reply had been supportive: “If you want to do it, my son is doing something, see if you want to do it.”
Rajat Bedi Talks Meme, Wants Krrish 4 Role
The Ba***ds Of Bollywood has marked the solid comeback of Rajat Bedi. The actor was already popular among the masses and netizens because of his roles in memorable films like Koi Mil Gaya (2003), Jaani Dushman (2001) etc. What also kept him alive in the minds of people was the legendary meme of him mouthing the dialogue ‘Sabki izzat karenge toh lootenge kiski’. When reminded about the ‘Sabki izzat karenge toh lootenge kiski’ meme, Rajat couldn’t stop laughing. Then he said, “It has become iconic. That line is going to go down in history. There’s nobody taking that line from me. Woh Rajat Bedi ka hi rahega. From kids to elders, everyone loves that line.” But he cautioned, “As far as you use it for fun purposes, then it's fair enough (laughs).” Rajat analyzed, “I guess sabko nostalgia ho raha hai. People are remembering these dialogues since they are seeing my face again in The Ba***ds Of Bollywood. I am loving it and I am happy that they always appreciated my work. Now, after the web show, they are appreciating it even more.”

And if sources are to be believed, then the first asset is all set to drop in the first half of October. “The makers plan to launch the teaser of De De Pyaar De 2 on October 12. A clearer picture will emerge in a few days, but as of now, this date has been seriously considered by the team.”

Jaishankar Calls For "Global Workforce" Amid H-1B
New York: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has called for a new model of a “global workforce” as the world grapples with shifting demographics and rising barriers to migration. Speaking at an Observer Research Foundation (ORF) event on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, he said countries cannot meet labour demands solely from their own populations, stressing the need for a distributed, internationally connected workforce.
His remarks come amid growing unease in India over U.S. President Donald Trump’s new immigration policy, which

Jaishankar said nations may debate where migrant workers are housed, but the demand for global talent is undeniable. “Demands cannot be met in many countries purely out of national demographics. This is a reality. You cannot run away from it,” he said. He also highlighted that in today’s turbulent world, trade and technology are reshaping economies, making cooperation essential. West Bank Annexation
US President Donald Trump has said he will not allow Benjamin Netanyahu to annex the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Speaking ahead of the Israeli prime minister's address to the UN General Assembly on Friday, the US president told reporters in the Oval Office: "I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank ... It's not going to happen."
Trump, who will meet Netanyahu on Monday, also said a Gaza deal was "pretty close".

After defeating Bangladesh to reach the Asia Cup final, Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha declared his team “special” and confident of beating anyone, including India. Praising bowlers like Shaheen Shah Afridi for their all-round performance, Agha said early breakthroughs and disciplined fielding were key to their 11-run win. Looking ahead, he added, “We know what we need to do, and we will come on Sunday and try to beat them,” signaling Pakistan’s readiness for the final clash with India.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has said that U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on India over Russian oil purchases are having a “big impact” on Moscow.
Rutte claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been in contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin, asking him to explain his strategy on Ukraine following the 50% U.S. tariffs on Indian goods.
“Delhi is now on the phone with Vladimir Putin…asking, ‘I support you, but could you explain your strategy because I have now been hit by these tariffs by the United States,’” Rutte told CNN during the UNGA session.

CHICAGO, IL- Hundreds of participants gathered at the picturesque Twin Lake Golf Course on Saturday to celebrate the Viksit Bharat Run 2025, a vibrant event dedicated to unity, environmental stewardship, and cultural pride. Hosted by the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation with support from the Consulate General of India in Chicago, the run drew families, community leaders, and dignitaries, highlighting the strength and solidarity of the Indian American diaspora.
The morning began with warm greetings and blessings from Consul General Somnath Ghosh, who extended Navratri and Durga Puja wishes. He encouraged the community to “run for development, friendship, and inclusivity—honoring both ancestral roots and our shared future.” Joining him were Deputy Consul General Kriti Das and Consul Sanjeev Pal, both of whom actively participated

Palomar Observatory Names First Woman Leader, Mansi Kasliwal
NEW YORK, NY- Ganesh Shenoy, a 54-year-old Indian citizen, has been extradited from India to the United States after more than two decades on the run. He faces a second-degree manslaughter charge stemming from a fatal car crash in Hicksville, New York, in April 2005. The extradition marks the first such transfer from India to the U.S. in 17 years, highlighting the renewed cooperation between the two nations on law enforcement matters. Shenoy was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Mumbai and brought to Nassau County, where he was arraigned on September 26 and ordered held without bail.
The charges against Shenoy stem from a crash in which he allegedly sped through a red light at twice the legal limit, colliding with the vehicle of 44-year-old Philip Mastropolo. Mastropolo, a father of two, was on his way to work when the impact forced his car into a truck, killing him instantly. Prosecutors charged Shenoy with
second-degree manslaughter in August 2005, but he fled to India just two weeks after the crash, despite his passport being reportedly confiscated.
Authorities pursued Shenoy for years, issuing an Interpol Red Notice after his escape. His extradition represents a significant development in the long-running case. If convicted, Shenoy faces up to 15 years in prison under New York law. Nassau County District Attorney Donnelly emphasized the importance of holding Shenoy accountable, stating that after decades of evading justice, the defendant must now answer for the tragic loss of a husband and father.
Officials noted that the successful transfer was made possible through the combined efforts of the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Embassy in India.
For Mastropolo’s family, the move offers a measure of closure after years of waiting for justice in a case that has spanned continents and decades.
PASADENA, CA — When Mansi Manoj Kasliwal was 15, she left her hometown of Indore for boarding school in the United States. Encouraged by a teacher to pursue science, she soon found herself as an undergraduate at Cornell University working with NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope. “Spitzer was being launched, and I got to see the data start flowing in,” she recalled. “From then on, I was completely hooked.” That spark has carried her to a historic achievement. Caltech recently announced that Kasliwal, now a professor of astronomy, has been appointed director of Palomar Observatory — the first woman to lead the institution in its 75-year history. Kasliwal’s research centers on time-domain and multi-messenger astrophysics, exploring transient cosmic events such as supernovae and neutron-star mergers.

Chicago Raids: Border Chief Admits Arrests Based on Looks
CHICAGO, IL- On Sunday afternoon, downtown Chicago witnessed an unusual and unsettling sight: dozens of federal agents in military-style fatigues patrolling some of the city’s busiest streets and landmarks. Their presence was part of a stepped-up immigration enforcement campaign led by U.S. Border Patrol Commander at Large Gregory Bovino. During the patrol, agents detained multiple individuals, and Bovino openly acknowledged that decisions to stop people were partly based on their appearance. This admission echoed a controversial U.S. Supreme Court ruling just weeks earlier, which permitted agents in California to continue making stops based on race, language, and other characteristics.
The show of force followed recent incidents where armed Border Patrol boats were seen on the Chicago River, signaling a more aggressive immigration strategy in the Midwest. Bovino defended the patrols by linking them to broader concerns about violence in Chicago, though crime data shows that both murders and violent crime have declined in recent years, and the vast majority of such crimes are committed by U.S. citizens. Nevertheless, Bovino suggested the operation, dubbed “Operation At Large,” would extend beyond downtown into neighborhoods like Cicero and South Chicago. The reaction among residents and passersby was deeply
divided. Some shouted protests— “ICE go home!” and “Real patriotic guys!”—while others expressed gratitude to the officers. Protesters trailed the agents through River North, chanting against immigration raids, while supportive onlookers applauded what they saw as law enforcement doing its job. Tensions rose further when Bovino himself joined a foot chase, ending with the detention of a man near Superior Street. When questioned about the arrest, Bovino declined to provide specifics, saying only that the man did not resemble the white reporter accompanying them.
Local officials and community members condemned the patrols as acts of intimidation rather than public safety. Governor JB Pritzker criticized the officers for parading downtown with “large weapons in camouflage and masks,” saying the spectacle endangered communities and damaged businesses. Meanwhile, immigrant residents and their families described the patrols as a direct cultural and personal assault, with some, like Shirley Zuniga, abandoning personal celebrations to join protests. The patrols, part of the Trump administration’s “Operation Midway Blitz,” have already led to hundreds of arrests in the Chicago area—escalating an already heated national debate about immigration enforcement and civil rights.

Bushra Amiwala Condemns ICE Invasion of Downtown Chicago
CHICAGO, IL — Federal immigration agents were seen in downtown Chicago on Saturday, drawing immediate outrage from residents and elected officials. Dozens of protesters confronted ICE agents as they moved through highly visible landmarks such as Michigan Avenue, Millennium Park, the riverwalk, and Tribune Tower. Some agents were even observed on boats patrolling the Chicago River, later heading toward River North. Witnesses estimate more than 50 agents were deployed, with ICE describing the action only as part of an “ongoing operation.”

“Deport Every Indian”
Palm Bay, FL Councilman’s Hate Sparks Fury
Indian Americans in Brevard County are outraged after City Councilman Chandler Langevin posted racist attacks on social media. On Sept. 20, Langevin declared: “There’s not a single Indian that cares about the United States. They are here to exploit us financially and enrich India and Indians. America for Americans.” Days earlier he wrote: “Deport every Indian immediately.” Leaders swiftly condemned him. Mayor Rob Medina said such rhetoric “has no place in Palm Bay,” praising Indian Americans’ contributions to U.S. business, science, politics, and medicine. Councilman Kenny Johnson added, “Silence can lead to violence, and so I felt very convicted to speak up this time.”Langevin refused to back down, saying: “I stand by my comments. Palm Bay will not become Dallas or Dearborn.” Rep. Mike Haridopolos and the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) stood firmly with the Indian community, calling Langevin’s remarks “unacceptable, divisive, and echoing some of history’s darkest rhetoric.” Councilman Kenny Johnson is requesting a discussion and possible vote on recommending that the city attorney write a letter to the governor asking for Langevin’s removal from office.

Community advocates are encouraging people to document ICE sightings using the SALUTE method—reporting details about the size, actions, location, uniforms, timing, and equipment of agents. Amiwala stressed that these federal operations are not only intended to intimidate vulnerable immigrant families but also disrupt local economies and erode trust within communities. “It’s never been more important to educate our friends, families, and neighbors on their rights,” she said, calling on Chicagoans to stand united against what she described as an assault on the city.

Illinois Elected Leaders Denounce Escalating ICE Tactics at Broadview Demonstrations
HiIndia Newsdesk
CHICAGO, IL - In light of escalating violence by federal agents against protesters at the ICE processing center in Broadview, Illinois, and growing legal threats from the Trump Department of Justice, Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, State Sen. Robert Peters, and Ald. Andre Vasquez—who have all recently attended protests at Broadview— issued the following joint statement on Saturday evening:
“As elected officials who have stood with protesters outside the ICE facility in Broadview, we feel an urgent responsibility to express our deep concern over the increasingly hostile language and violent actions by ICE and DHS toward peaceful demonstrators. Out of this concern, we have chosen not to participate in tonight’s protest. We
Carrollton confirms missing Indian woman found safe
CARROLLTON, GA - The Carrollton Police Department has announced that Bijal Patel, a 33-year-old woman who had been reported missing earlier this month, has been located and is safe. Patel’s disappearance had prompted widespread concern across Carrollton and beyond. She was last seen on Sunday, September 7, 2025, around 7:00 p.m. leaving her home near Meadow Run. At the time, she was dressed in black pants and a black t-shirt and driving a silver 2010 Honda Accord with Georgia license plate BNK6181. Following her disappearance, local authorities issued a missing person alert, and the community quickly mobilized to help. Patel’s information was circulated widely across social media platforms, with many community groups amplifying the search. On September 13, the Facebook page Tennessee Missing and Unsolved reported that Patel was believed to have traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, after leaving Carrollton, further fueling public interest in her case. Although Patel has since been found safe, authorities have not released specific details about her time in Tennessee or the circumstances surrounding her recovery. What led to her being located remains unclear, but the news has brought relief to those who had been following her case closely. In an official update, the Carrollton Police Department confirmed on its Facebook page that Patel was safe.

Illinois Secretary of Statee Giannoulias Opens New Orland Park
DMV Location
CHICAGO, IL- Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has announced the opening of a new Orland Park DMV facility, designed to expand services and better serve the community.
The facility, now located at 18230 Orland Parkway, will operate Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. by appointment only. Residents will have access to a full range of services, including driver’s license renewals, REAL IDs, vehicle registrations, renewal stickers, and—for the first time in Orland Park—behindthe-wheel driving exams. Two additional service stations have also been added to increase efficiency.
“Orland Park is a busy full-service DMV that allows residents to easily take care of essential tasks,” Giannoulias said. “We expanded hours and services at no cost to taxpayers to ensure the community experiences greater convenience without disruption.”
Senator Michael Hastings praised the project, stating: “This new DMV puts families first and shows what’s possible when we work together.”
Representative Patrick Sheehan added: “This temporary facility ensures seniors, working families, and residents with mobility challenges continue to access DMV services close to home.”
Background:
• In February 2025, the Secretary of State’s office signed a 5-year lease for the previous site at the Orland Township office building (14807 S. Ravinia Ave.). However, township trustees voted in July to terminate the lease effective October.
• The Secretary of State’s office quickly secured a new location and signed a one-year, zero-cost lease with the non-profit Communities Transform Futures (CTF), ensuring uninterrupted service.
• The old location closed Friday at 4 p.m., and the new facility opened Monday morning just a few miles away.
• A permanent DMV site in the Orland Park area will continue to be pursued before the current lease expires.
pepper rounds, and rubber bullets— repeatedly shooting protesters and members of the press in the face without provocation. Agents at Broadview have also unholstered weapons, including machine guns and handguns, and pointed them directly at protesters. As seen in the recent killing of Silverio Villegas Gonzalez in Franklin Park, ICE has demonstrated a willingness to use lethal force.
For these reasons, we cannot, in good conscience, advise anyone to protest tonight. If you are considering attending, please weigh the very real dangers—not only to yourself but also to others, including those currently being illegally detained in the Broadview facility.
We remain committed to keeping our neighbors safe, and we will not look away or stop organizing against these authoritarian tactics.”
Raja for Illinois Surpasses $3 Million in Third Consecutive Quarter
SCHAUMBURG, IL — The Raja for Illinois campaign has announced another strong showing, reporting more than $3 million raised in the third quarter of 2025. This marks the third consecutive quarter in which the campaign has surpassed that milestone. By the close of the quarter, the campaign will hold over $17.5 million in cash on hand, underscoring its financial strength as the race heads into its next phase.
The fundraising success comes as Raja continues to lead by double digits in every public poll of the primary –including those conducted by outside groups backing his opponent. Since July, Raja’s message has reached voters statewide through a series of television ads, including “Bullies,” “Underdog,” and “29.” Beyond the airwaves, he has spent the summer traveling across Illinois on a listening tour, visiting communities from Rockford and Springfield to Carbondale, Bloomington, and Moline. He also recently introduced his Trump Accountability Plan, drawing attention from local media with a clear blueprint to counter Donald Trump’s abuses of power.
Campaign manager Brexton Isaacs credited the momentum to grassroots energy, saying, “Thanks to the generosity of tens of thousands of supporters, we are one quarter closer to sending Raja Krishnamoorthi – a proven fighter with a track record of delivering for Illinois – to the U.S. Senate.” Isaacs added that Illinois voters recognize Raja’s reputation as a proud underdog who has consistently stood up to political bullies, including Trump.

Ro Khanna Slams Edited Hamas Video, Defends Record
WASHINGTON, DC – In an era when partisan voices increasingly mislead followers with distorted clips, Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) has become the latest target of false claims linking him to Hamas supporters. Conservative activist Laura Loomer circulated a video suggesting Khanna appeared on stage at ArabCon alongside individuals accused of backing Hamas. She escalated the allegation by claiming the congressman “laughed” when asked about the October 7 attacks in Israel.
“Why did Democrat Congressman Ro Khanna share a stage with HAMAS supporters this weekend at ArabCon
who laughed & cheered when asked if they would condemn October 7th?” Loomer wrote on X. “This is a sitting member of Congress laughing at October 7th. Ro Khanna should RESIGN.”
Khanna quickly pushed back, highlighting the deceptive editing.
“This is why politics is broken,” he wrote. “You edited the clip to make it appear I spoke on the same panel. I did not and spoke at a different time. I have condemned Hamas & Oct 7. Challenge my ideas, but show my actual remarks!”
The California Democrat has consistently reaffirmed his stance: condemning Hamas and the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks, calling for the immediate release of hostages, and insisting Hamas must never govern Gaza or play any role in a future Palestinian state. He has backed congressional resolutions reinforcing that position. At the same time, Khanna has been a vocal advocate for Palestinian statehood—urging U.S. recognition under strict conditions: that Hamas relinquish weapons and power, and that Palestinian leadership affirm Israel’s right to exist.

ICC Suspends USA Cricket Over Mismanagement
Dr Nilesh Mehta
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket, citing persistent governance failures and reputational setbacks. The decision, taken at the ICC Board meeting in Dubai on September 23, 2025, comes at a critical moment as cricket prepares for its return to the Olympics at Los Angeles 2028, with the U.S. market seen as vital for global growth.
Despite being launched as a fresh start after years of turmoil, USA Cricket failed to deliver stability. The ICC had warned the body to reform governance, secure U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee recognition, and meet commitments. Instead, officials said the board showed “a pattern of broken promises and damaging decisions.” While governance powers are suspended, players will not be penalized. U.S. men’s and women’s teams will continue competing internationally, with the ICC temporarily overseeing operations to ensure continuity of programs and development pathways.

To steer recovery, the ICC has appointed a Normalisation Committee to set governance benchmarks and rebuild credibility. Though the setback is severe, the ICC insists the U.S. remains a “crucial market at a crucial time.”
With reforms, USA Cricket could still reclaim its place and play a central role in cricket’s Olympic future.

Deadly Raids Amid Trump Immigration Crackdown
DALLAS, TX - A deadly shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas has intensified the Trump administration’s effort to portray attacks on immigration agents as part of a campaign of “radical left” violence. The shooter, who opened fire from a rooftop near Love Field airport, killed one detainee and wounded two others before taking his own life. Investigators discovered bullets inscribed with an “anti-ICE” message, a detail quickly seized upon by FBI Director Kash Patel and amplified by Donald Trump. The former president tied the incident to “radical left terrorists,” echoing rhetoric used after the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, despite bipartisan condemnation of political violence. The National Republican Congressional Committee reinforced the narrative, accusing Democrats of fueling hostility toward law enforcement. Committee spokesperson Mike Marinella said Democrats had long “demonized ICE agents,” warning that their rhetoric was emboldening violent extremists. Joe Rothrock, the FBI’s Dallas field agent, linked the Dallas shooting to a string of recent attacks against immigration and border enforcement personnel in Texas and California. These included an armed ambush at the Prairieland
detention center in Alvarado and a shooting at a Customs and Border Protection facility in McAllen, which left three people injured. Officials cited a 700% rise in assaults on agents by “activists masquerading as immigrant advocates.”
At the same time, civil liberties groups and immigrant rights advocates accuse ICE and CBP of using violent tactics themselves. Reports describe masked agents smashing car windows, detaining U.S. citizens based on appearance, and using force against protesters. The arrest of Senator Alex Padilla after questioning Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in Los Angeles further fueled criticism. In Chicago, clashes between protesters and Gregory Bovino’s El Centro squad left 16 demonstrators arrested, with each side accusing the other of violence.
The death of Silverio VillegasGonzález, shot by an ICE agent in Illinois during a traffic stop, has prompted demands for greater transparency. Experts caution that the administration’s framing oversimplifies a complex picture of political extremism. Brian Levin of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism warned that multiple forms of extremism—left, right, and idiosyncratic—are likely to escalate in the current climate.
Egg Harbor Township Produce Market
Burglarized; $65K
EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, NJ- A long-standing produce market in Egg Harbor Township became the target of a carefully planned burglary over the weekend, leaving the owners facing devastating losses. According to the owners of M&S Produce Outlet on Black Horse Pike, the intruders inflicted an estimated $50,000 in property damage and stole around $15,000 in cash from a safe.
The burglars demonstrated a striking level of sophistication. They reportedly cut power and surveillance wires, breached walls, and disabled the alarm

system before breaking into the office. Both surveillance systems, which recorded footage to hard drives instead of the cloud, were stolen during the heist.
“It was kind of like a bank heist,” said coowner Oscar Sanchez. “They just kind of knew what they were doing. I mean, they had the equipment.”
The scale of destruction shocked the owners. Sanchez admitted he was stunned, saying, “I couldn’t believe it. I literally couldn’t believe it.” Coowner Dipen Patel, who purchased the business just months ago, suggested the criminals were well-informed. “I feel like they were knowledgeable enough about the business and the operations, and some of the systems,” he explained.
General manager Debbie Hakes added that the thieves even left behind a box of pennies after emptying the safe. Police have launched an investigation but have yet to name any suspects. Investigators collected fingerprints and traces of blood from the scene, which could provide DNA evidence.

Indian American Doctor Sentenced to 14 Years in Health Care Fraud and Opioid Distribution Scheme
BENSALEM, PA- A Pennsylvania physician was sentenced today to 168 months in prison for orchestrating conspiracies involving health care fraud, wire fraud, unlawful distribution of controlled substances, and related money laundering offenses. He was also ordered to pay more than $2 million in restitution and forfeit an additional $2 million.
According to court documents and evidence at trial, Neil K. Anand, M.D., 48, of Bensalem, Pennsylvania, conspired to submit false claims to Medicare, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), Independence Blue Cross, and Anthem. The scheme centered on “Goody Bags” — medically unnecessary prescription medications dispensed through pharmacies owned by Anand. These
claims led to over $2.4 million in reimbursements.
To push the unwanted “Goody Bags,” Anand conspired to distribute oxycodone without a legitimate medical purpose. Unlicensed interns issued prescriptions for controlled substances on blank prescription pads pre-signed by Anand. In total, he prescribed

Illinois Secretary of State Adds Key Leaders to Securities Department
CHICAGO, IL - Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has reinforced the state’s Securities Department by appointing four seasoned professionals to senior leadership roles, strengthening the state’s ability to protect investors and combat financial fraud. The new hires include a Deputy Director, Chief of Enforcement, Chief of Examinations, and Senior Investigator. Together, they bring decades of experience in financial law, litigation, enforcement, and investigations.
“Adding these individuals to our Securities team is a huge win for the people of Illinois,” Giannoulias said. “Their combined expertise will bolster an already formidable department and enhance our ability to tackle complex cases, particularly those involving cryptocurrency and financial scams.”
The Securities Department regulates Illinois’s investment industry, overseeing more than 250,000 securities salespeople and 25,000 investment adviser representatives. With 37 employees, it generates more than $60 million annually in fees, fines, and penalties. Like the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, its operations are funded by industry fees and recovered fines rather than taxpayer dollars. By adding attorneys, investigators, and examiners—and expanding financial literacy efforts—the department aims to safeguard residents’ financial interests while generating additional revenue.
The new appointees include:
Kristine Kolky, Deputy Director –Kolky will oversee claims of financial exploitation, focusing on protecting seniors and vulnerable populations. She also leads educational outreach to prevent fraud. A former partner
at Taft, Stettinius & Hollister in Chicago, she specialized in complex commercial litigation. Kolky earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and her law degree from DePaul University. Victor Turla, Chief of Enforcement – Turla will direct investigations into violations of state securities law, initiating enforcement actions to ensure compliance. He previously served 11 years at the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, including three years as Deputy Bureau Chief in the Special Prosecutions Bureau. Turla is a graduate of the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign and Saint Louis University School of Law.
Frank Ronis, Chief of Examinations – Ronis will oversee reviews of Illinoisregistered investment firms, examining compliance with state and federal law. He began his career with the Illinois Securities Department and later spent two decades as a Senior Examiner
with the SEC. Ronis holds business degrees from Roosevelt University and Dominican University and is a Certified Fraud Examiner.
Jordan Frieberg, Senior Investigator –Frieberg will investigate violations of Illinois securities law, with a particular focus on cyber and crypto fraud. He has successfully shut down fraudulent websites targeting investors. He previously worked with the Arizona Securities Division and holds degrees in Criminal Justice (University of Minnesota) and Law Enforcement Intelligence (Michigan State University). In addition to these hires, Giannoulias was reappointed Co-Chair of the Securities Committee of the National Association of Secretaries of State, while Department Director Chet Taylor was elected to the Board of the North American Securities Administrators Association—further elevating Illinois’s national leadership in investor protection.
of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud, three counts of health care fraud, one count of money laundering, four counts of unlawful monetary transactions, and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances.
The case was investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, and the Office of Personnel Management Office of Inspector General. Trial Attorneys Paul J. Koob, Patrick J. Campbell, and Arun Bodapati of the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section prosecuted the case.
The Fraud Section leads the Department of Justice’s Health Care Fraud Strike Force Program, which since 2007 has charged more than 5,800 defendants accused of billing public and private health care programs over $30 billion.
Pramila Jayapal Gets Death Threat From AZ Rep
WASHINGTON, DC – Condemnations are pouring in after an Arizona state legislator publicly called for the hanging of U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), igniting alarm over the growing normalization of political violence in the United States.
State Representative John Gillette, a Republican, posted on social media on September 24 that Jayapal and others who “advocate for the overthrow of the American government” should be “tried, convicted and hanged.” His post came in response to a selectively edited video misrepresenting Jayapal’s comments from a March Zoom call about organizing peaceful protest. The clip, shared by an account called “Patriot Oasis,” framed Jayapal as urging Democrats to be “strike ready” and “street ready”—a supposed call to violence. In reality, the congresswoman was discussing nonviolent resistance rooted in the traditions of the labor and civil rights movements. In her full remarks, she said: “We want to help you seed, participate, and coordinate these nonviolent resistance actions… If we were in the labor movement, we might call this getting strike ready. I think of it as getting us strike ready, or street ready, and part of that is understanding our own strength.”

Prof. Jagmohan Singh, Nephew of Freedom Icon Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Honored at Reception
NEW YORK, NY - In a heartfelt gathering at MINT Restaurant, more than 80 prominent Indian Americans came together to honor Professor Jagmohan Singh, nephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh—the revolutionary martyr whose fearless sacrifice shook the foundations of British colonial rule and continues to inspire generations in India and beyond.
The event was organized by Varinder Bhalla, Chairman and Founder of the Coalition of Indian American Associations of New York (CIONY), with support from the American Punjabi Society.
A Tribute Through History
The evening opened with a short but powerful video highlighting the life and legacy of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Originally presented in 2010 by Dr. Riti Sunshine Bhalla while she was a high school student, the segment was scripted and produced by Varinder Bhalla. Telecast on multiple television channels across the U.S. and Europe, the documentary carried rare archival references and appearances by U.S. Congressmen, Senators, and Governors—underlining Bhagat Singh’s global recognition as a symbol
Professor Singh shared that his own mother, Bibi Amar Kaur, was jailed for her role in the independence movement. As an infant barely one year old, he spent an entire year behind bars with her—a living testament to the intergenerational sacrifices of the Singh family.
of freedom and justice.
Sponsor’s Personal Connection
The evening’s sponsor, Harry Singh Bolla, who hails from a village near Bhagat Singh’s ancestral home, reflected on how deeply the revolutionary’s story shaped his own worldview. In his keynote address, Bolla emphasized the timelessness of Bhagat Singh’s courage and sacrifice, calling it “a guiding light for all who believe in freedom and human dignity.”
Professor Singh’s Inspiring Address
Following introductory remarks by Bhalla, Professor Jagmohan Singh delivered a deeply moving and personal keynote.
As the son of Bibi Amar Kaur, Bhagat Singh’s younger sister, Professor Singh
has dedicated his life to safeguarding and spreading his uncle’s ideals. His narrative went far beyond historical anecdotes—illuminating the emotional, philosophical, and human aspects of the freedom struggle.
He recounted personal meetings with several of Bhagat Singh’s comrades, preserving their voices and experiences for posterity. The audience listened in rapt silence as he described the martyr’s final days—his mother’s tearful visit, his father’s desperate but unsuccessful appeal for clemency, and Bhagat Singh’s unflinching resolve as he walked toward the gallows with unmatched bravery.
In one particularly poignant recollection, Professor Singh shared that his own mother, Bibi Amar Kaur, was jailed for her role in the independence movement. As an infant barely one year old, he
Baseball Makes Professional Debut in South Asia with Mumbai Cobras Leading the Way
LOS ANGELES, CA – Baseball is making its professional debut in South Asia, and Indian as well as IndianAmerican athletes are taking center stage. The Mumbai Cobras, India’s first professional baseball team, have officially signed players—including three Indian Americans—for the inaugural season of Baseball United, the first league dedicated to the Middle East and South Asia.
Among them, three Indian American professionals bring strong international credentials. Karan Patel, 28, from Houston, Texas, was the first player of Indian descent ever drafted by a Major League Baseball team and became the Cobras’ top overall draft pick. Aaron Singh, 28, a California native, was a college All-American, while Raul Shah, 31, from the UK, previously represented the Great Britain National Team.
The Cobras’ roster balances homegrown Indian talent with international
experience. Pitchers Saurabh Gaikwad, Akshay More, and Tushar Lalwani are standouts from India’s grassroots
baseball programs. Gaikwad, 23, comes from a farming family in Maharashtra; More, 21, earned “Best Pitcher” honors at the All India Inter University Baseball Championship in both 2023 and 2025; and Lalwani, 22, made the leap from cricket to baseball just six years ago.
The Cobras will debut against the Karachi Monarchs on November 14 in Dubai, marking the first-ever professional baseball league game in the region. The league’s four founding franchises also include the Arabia Wolves and the Mid East Falcons. The season culminates with the best-ofthree United Series championship from December 12–14.
Baseball United Chairman and CEO Kash Shaikh called the milestone “historic” for sports in India. “While cricket is king, baseball is the country’s young prince,” he said, emphasizing the potential for Indian athletes to rise as new sports heroes across the region.
spent an entire year behind bars with her—a living testament to the intergenerational sacrifices of the Singh family.
Interactive Dialogue Leaves Lasting Impact
The evening concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session moderated by Varinder Bhalla. Among the most powerful exchanges was Bhalla’s question about Bhagat Singh’s state of mind in his final hours and his ideological disagreements with his father over the concept of clemency. Professor Singh’s candid, emotionally charged answers left many attendees visibly moved, reflecting the continuing relevance of Bhagat Singh’s revolutionary thought in today’s world.
A Living Legacy
The program was not merely a tribute to a historic figure but a reaffirmation of shared values. Through Professor Singh’s words, Bhagat Singh’s story was transformed from a page in a history book into a living legacy— one that challenges each generation to embrace courage, justice, and sacrifice in the pursuit of freedom.

WASHINGTON, DC - In a landmark initiative to provide global exposure to students in the United States, the American Telugu Association (ATA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH). Established 16 years ago, IITH is ranked #7 in Engineering and #6 in Innovation in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of India.
The agreement, finalized on September 25, 2025, in Washington, D.C., marks a significant step toward creating internship opportunities for students of the Telugu diaspora at IITH’s world-class campus in Hyderabad.
The MoU was signed by Prof. B. S. Murty, Director of IITH, and Mr. Jayanth Challa, President of ATA. It establishes a framework for internships ranging from a few weeks to one year, with an initial validity of three years and the possibility of extension. Beyond
internships, the collaboration aims to encourage research partnerships and strengthen U.S.-India people-to-people connections.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with ATA, which aligns with our ongoing efforts to nurture global talent and foster meaningful research exposure. This is the first time IITH is signing an agreement outside of an academic institution,” said Prof. B. S. Festival of Lights Takes Center Stage at Smithsonian’s Asian Art Museum
WASHINGTON, DC –The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art will host a special evening program on October 24 to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. The event, titled Asia After Dark, will take place from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on the museum’s Freer Plaza and will be open to the public free of charge. The celebration will feature a vibrant lineup of activities, including live dance performances, food vendors, curator-led tours, and hands-on craft stations. Guests can also look forward to a high-energy, DJ-led dance party to close out the evening. The museum noted that last year’s Diwali festivities attracted more than 5,000 visitors, underscoring the growing popularity
of the event. Diwali, observed over five days, is widely regarded as the Hindu new year and holds deep cultural and spiritual meaning. Traditionally celebrated after the final harvest, the festival honors Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and
abundance. According to Hindu belief, Lakshmi cannot enter spaces shrouded in darkness, which is why devotees illuminate their homes, temples, and public places with oil lamps and lights. The National Museum of Asian Art itself adds rich context to the celebration. Established in 1923, it was the first national art museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to Asian art. Located on the National Mall, its collection spans South Asia, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Korea, the Islamic world, and also includes 19th- and early 20th-century American works. Today, as part of the Smithsonian Institution, the museum contributes to the millions of annual visits the Smithsonian draws from around the world.
