Trump's "Light's Victory Over Darkness" Diwali Message For Americans

WASHINGTON D.C. – US President Donald Trump extended warm wishes to Americans on the occasion of Diwali, calling the festival a celebration of hope, resilience, and the triumph of light over darkness. In his message, the President highlighted the significance of Diwali in fostering unity, family values, and cultural understanding across the United States.

“Diwali is a time to celebrate the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil,” Trump said. “It reminds us of the importance of community, compassion, and the enduring strength of family bonds.”

The President also acknowledged the contributions of the Indian-American community, emphasizing how their achievements enrich American society.

Trump urged Americans to embrace the values symbolized by Diwali, encouraging acts of kindness, learning, and personal growth during the festival season.

Trump’s Diwali message comes amid

growing recognition of Indian festivals at the national level, with the White House hosting events to celebrate cultural diversity. In past years, such messages have highlighted the importance of

Amazon to Replace 500,000 Jobs with Robots, Faces Possible Backlash

Amazon may soon replace more than half a million jobs with robots, the New York Times reported, based on internal documents it accessed.

The robotics team's goal, the report stated, is to automate 75 per cent of operations, with warehouses that employ the fewest possible humans. The report claims that the e-commerce giant's automation team expects that the company can avoid hiring more than 1,60,000 people in the United States it

US forces kill two in strike on alleged drug boat in the Pacific

US forces have struck another vessel alleged to be carrying drugs, this time in the waters of the Pacific Ocean, the Pentagon has confirmed.

According to defence secretary Pete Hegseth, two people on board the vessel were killed. No US forces were harmed. The vessel was known to US intelligence and was believed to be carrying drugs along a known trafficking route in international waters, Hegseth added. The strike marks the eighth US strike against suspected drug boats since 2 September - but the first in the Pacific. "Narco-terrorists intending to bring position to our shores will find no safe harbour anywhere inour hemisphere," Hegseth wrote on X. expect to sell twice as many products. Currently, Amazon employs around 1.2 million workers.

Preparing for this workplace shift and the backlash it is certain to lead to, the documents mention using "advanced technology" instead of "automation" and "artificial intelligence", and "cobots" (collaboration of humans and robots) instead of "robots". Amazon has also considered building an image as a "good corporate citizen" through greater participation in community events, the New York Times reported.

Trump: Hamas Could Be Neutralized in Two Minutes

Washington:

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday described Hamas as "violent people" and stated they "could be put out in two minutes," while noting that the group was being given an opportunity to uphold the ceasefire agreement. Speaking at a Diwali celebration at the White House, Trump highlighted the broader context of his peace efforts, saying, "We are forging peace all over the world... We're getting everybody to get along. I just got a call from the Middle East. We're doing very well there. We have many countries signed

on to peace in the Middle East, and nobody thought they'd ever see that happening."

Turning specifically to the situation with Hamas, Trump reiterated the group's violent nature and the US's approach, stating, "The Hamas situation, they're pretty violent people. We could put that out in two minutes. We're giving them a chance. They agreed that they'd be very good and straight. They wouldn't be killing people."

He emphasised that swift action would follow if the ceasefire was violated: "If they don't honour the deal, they'll be taken care of very quickly. It is total peace in the Middle East; we have levels of friendship with everybody. Every country that hated each other now loves each other. Nobody ever saw anything like it..."

Donald Trump said Diwali is a time to bring families and friends together to celebrate.

inclusivity and the positive impact of Indian traditions on local communities. Observers note that Trump’s message also reinforces diplomatic ties between the US and India, reflecting a focus on shared cultural and economic values. By linking the spiritual themes of Diwali with civic responsibility and social cohesion, the President sought to resonate with both Indian-Americans and the wider public. As Diwali lights illuminate homes across the country, Trump’s message serves as a reminder of optimism and perseverance, encouraging Americans to carry the festival’s spirit of hope and unity into the year ahead.

Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-eMohammed (JeM), a UN-designated terrorist organisation, has launched an online training initiative targeting women, allegedly to raise funds and recruit new members.

The program, called “Tufat alMuminat,” aims to indoctrinate participants under the guise of religious education.

According to intelligence sources, the course will be led by women related to senior JeM leaders, including relatives of its founder Masood Azhar. His sisters, Sadiya Azhar and Samaira Azhar, are set to conduct daily 40-minute online sessions beginning November 8, focusing on jihad-related ideology and “duties” of Muslim women. Sadiya Azhar has reportedly been appointed head of the

Children Killed in Russian Strikes as Trump-Putin Talks Fall Through

At least seven people have been killed including two children during intense Russian drone and missile strikes on Ukraine, officials say.

A kindergarten was hit in Ukraine's second biggest city Kharkiv and there was widespread damage in Kyiv. Children were among the 27 people

wounded. Hours earlier, US President Donald Trump said his plans for an imminent summit in Budapest with Russia's Vladimir Putin had been shelved as he did not want a "wasted meeting".

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacks proved Moscow had not come under enough pressure for its continued war.

The Kremlin has rejected calls for a ceasefire along the current front lines made both by Trump and European leaders. However, Russian officials said on Wednesday that preparation for a Trump-Putin summit was continuing, disputing the US president's assessment that it had been put on hold.

More than 40 dead after multivehicle crash in Uganda

Forty-six people have been killed after several vehicles crashed on a major highway in Uganda, the police say.

The police revised down an earlier death toll of 63, saying they had mistakenly included victims who were unconscious and were now being treated.

The crash occurred when two buses travelling in opposite directions "met head on" while trying to overtake two other vehicles – a lorry and a car – on the Kampala-Gulu Highway at 00:15 local time (21:15 GMT), the Uganda Police Force said.

One of the buses swerved in an attempt to avoid a crash, but in the process caused a "head on and side collision" that led to a "chain reaction" in which other vehicles lost control and overturned.

As well as the fatalities, the passengers of the vehicles involved and several others were injured, police said. An investigation has been launched.

The injured have been taken to different hospitals in the western town of Kiryandongo.

In a statement, police said they were working with health and emergency services to verify the numbers and provide accurate updates as investigations continue into the cause of the tragedy.

President Yoweri Museveni said he had learnt of the tragic accident "with sadness" and sent his condolences to the bereaved families.

He urged caution to prevent such tragedies.

of Umar Farooq, one of the militants involved in the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Intelligence reports indicate that JeM is collecting 500 Pakistani Rupees (around Rs.156) from each woman enrolling in the course, under the pretext of covering “educational expenses.”

The online recruitment model, analysts say, is designed to bypass Pakistan’s conservative social norms that restrict women’s public activities while allowing JeM to discreetly expand its base and raise funds

The development comes months after Operation Sindoor, an Indian airstrike that killed 10 members of Azhar’s family, including Sadiya’s husband, Yusuf Azhar, at JeM’s Bahawalpur headquarters — intensifying the group’s push for renewed recruitment and funding.

Trump Repeats Claim on India’s Russian Oil Amid Sanctions

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his claim that New Delhi has assured him that India will curb its Russian oil imports, citing a personal assurance from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking to reporters at the White House, the US leader claimed the process of phasing out oil imports will be 'gradual, but the purchase will be 'sharply reduced' by the end of the year.

Trump also showed optimism about his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, hoping to leverage their talks to broker a truce between Russia and Ukraine.

"India, as you know, has told me they are going to stop...it's a process. You can't just stop (buying oil from Russia). By the end of the year, they'll be down to almost nothing; almost 40 per cent of the oil. India, they've been great. Spoke to Prime Minister Modi yesterday. They've been absolutely great," Trump told reporters. India, meanwhile, has denied any agreement with the US. India has repeatedly stressed that its energy policy was focused on ensuring stable domestic prices amid a growing population.

Pathak had a reward of Rs 25,000 on his arrest. He was wanted in eight criminal cases, including five high-profile murders in Sitamarhi and adjoining districts of Bihar.

A Delhi Police source revealed that Pathak had been openly challenging the cops through social media and audio messages. A recently recovered audio clip allegedly revealed details of a major conspiracy the gang was hatching ahead of the assembly elections in Bihar.

The Sigma Gang had been active for nearly seven years and was reportedly regrouping in Delhi to evade police action in Bihar. The police had been tracking their movement for several days before the operation.

The Indian Embassy confirmed it has shared Ahmed’s details with Russian authorities and is pressing for his discharge and repatriation, while monitoring other Indian nationals reportedly serving in the Russian military.

The embassy is in touch with families, and India recently requested Russia release 27 Indian nationals forcibly recruited into its army.

Trump Claims Justice Department Owes Him “Huge Compensation”

United States: US President Donald Trump said Tuesday the Department of Justice likely owed him damages, after a report that he was seeking millions of dollars in compensation for past investigations.

And it's awfully strange to make a decision where I'm paying myself," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked about the report. "But I was damaged very greatly." Trump added of the Department of Justice that "they probably owe me a lot of money -- if I get money from our country, I will do something nice with it like to give it to charity or give it to the White House." I don't think it's sustainable for them."

Trump said while he personally wishes to maintain friendly relations with China, years of one-sided economic dealings have left the US with no choice but to take firm action.

Step into the New Year Fit: Make Wellness Your First Resolution This Hindu New Year

As the Hindu New Year dawns, it marks not just a change in the calendar but also an opportunity to embrace a fresh start — one rooted in health, vitality, and self-care. While we celebrate with prayers, sweets, and family gatherings, this is also the perfect moment to reflect on our physical and mental well-being and commit to a fitter lifestyle in the year ahead.

In today’s fast-paced world, many of us lead sedentary lives dominated by screens, stress, and irregular routines. Over time, this takes a toll on our bodies — from weight gain and fatigue to high blood pressure and diabetes. Experts repeatedly emphasize that even small lifestyle changes can bring lasting results. As we step into the new Hindu year, making “fitness and wellness” a personal resolution can be one of the most rewarding commitments we take. Physical fitness isn’t only about spending hours in the gym. It’s about movement, balance, and consistency. A daily 30-minute walk, yoga practice, or even a few minutes of stretching can significantly improve cardiovascular health and boost energy levels. Equally important is nutrition — replacing processed foods with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains nourishes the body and sharpens the mind.

Physical fitness isn’t only about spending hours in the gym. It’s about movement, balance, and consistency. A daily 30-minute walk, yoga practice, or even a few minutes of stretching can significantly improve cardiovascular health and boost energy levels. Equally important is nutrition — replacing processed foods with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains nourishes the body and sharpens the mind.

hydrated.

Mental wellness, too, deserves equal attention. Stress, anxiety, and digital fatigue are growing challenges. Simple mindfulness habits like meditation, deep breathing, and spending time in nature can restore inner peace and improve focus. Ayurveda also teaches us the importance of aligning our lifestyle with the body’s natural rhythm — sleeping early, eating fresh, and staying

In the age of health trends and viral fitness hacks, the ‘3×3 Fitness Rule’ has caught the attention of wellness enthusiasts across social media. This simple yet effective approach focuses on completing three key steps before noon, making weight loss and overall well-being more achievable without overwhelming schedules. The principle is simple: by addressing nutrition, movement, and hydration early in the day, you set the tone for the rest of your daily routine. Step one involves a healthy, protein-rich breakfast. Whether it’s eggs, Greek yogurt, sprouts, or a smoothie, protein helps stabilize blood sugar, curbs cravings, and kickstarts metabolism. Experts say that a balanced morning meal can prevent unnecessary snacking later in the day.

Step two focuses on movement. A brisk walk, a short workout, or even 15–20 minutes of stretching can elevate heart rate, improve circulation, and energize the body. Morning exercise also encourages consistency, as it’s less likely to be skipped due to work or other commitments later. Studies show that even short bursts of activity early in the day can significantly contribute to weight loss and cardiovascular health.

For those looking to begin, setting small, realistic goals is the key. Start with 10 minutes of exercise a day, choose stairs over elevators, and gradually build momentum. Track progress weekly and celebrate every little victory — whether it’s feeling lighter, sleeping better, or simply having more energy.

As we welcome the Hindu New Year — a time of renewal, positivity, and hope — let’s carry forward the spirit of rejuvenation into our health as well. Fitness is not just about looking good; it’s about

feeling alive, confident, and ready to live each day with purpose.

Simple Ways to Improve Fitness This New Year

• Start Your Day Early – Rising before sunrise aligns your body with nature’s rhythm. Morning workouts or yoga sessions energize you and set a positive tone for the day.

• Stay Hydrated – Drink at least 8–10 glasses of water daily. Add lemon or tulsi leaves for a natural detox boost.

• Follow the “80% Rule” – Eat until you’re about 80% full; it prevents overeating and supports better digestion.

• Include Traditional Indian Superfoods –Turmeric, ghee, millets, and sprouts are not just cultural staples but also immunity boosters.

• Take Movement Breaks – Every hour, stand up, stretch, or walk for 2–3 minutes — especially if you work at a desk.

• Practice Yoga and Meditation – Just 15 minutes of Surya Namaskar or pranayama can improve flexibility, posture, and calmness.

• Get Enough Sleep – Rest is when the body repairs and rejuvenates. Aim for 7–8 hours of quality sleep every night.

• Avoid Screen Overload – Reduce unnecessary phone use before bed. Try reading, journaling, or gratitude meditation instead.

• Go Outdoors – Morning sunlight boosts Vitamin D and lifts your mood. Even a short walk in nature helps reduce stress.

• Stay Consistent, Not Perfect – The goal isn’t to transform overnight but to create sustainable habits. Consistency beats intensity every time.

The Viral ‘3×3 Fitness Rule’ Three Simple Steps Before Noon for Wellness and Weight Loss

Staying healthy can feel overwhelming with the countless diets, workout routines, and supplements promoted online. Amid this chaos, simple strategies that are easy to follow often stand out, and one of the latest trends on the internet is the ‘3×3 fitness rule.’ The 3×3 rule focuses on completing three key actions before noon: walking 3,000 steps, drinking one-third of your daily water intake, and consuming 30 grams of protein. By addressing movement, hydration, and nutrition early in the day, this approach aims to boost energy, focus, and overall health without requiring complicated routines or strict diets.

Step three emphasizes hydration. Drinking at least two glasses of water before noon replenishes fluids lost overnight, aids digestion, and supports metabolism. Adding lemon or herbs like mint or tulsi can boost immunity and detoxification. Adequate hydration also helps reduce unnecessary snacking and keeps energy levels stable throughout the morning.

The beauty of the 3×3 Fitness Rule lies in its simplicity. By focusing on these three manageable steps, individuals can create a structured morning routine that positively impacts physical health, mental clarity, and weight management. Unlike complex diet plans or intense workout schedules, this method is easy to adopt and sustainable. As wellness influencers and fitness coaches continue to promote the 3×3 rule, it’s gaining traction as a practical solution for those looking to improve lifestyle habits. By prioritizing nutrition, movement, and hydration before noon, anyone can take control of their health and make fitness a natural part of daily life.

This Hindu New Year, consider incorporating the 3×3 Fitness Rule into your routine — a small morning commitment that can lead to big changes in overall wellness and weight management.

America for a Crore!

What’s the New Game Taking the Market by Storm?

Although illegal routes to the U.S. from Gujarat have mostly stopped, a new market trend has emerged for those willing to spend money to reach America. Agents are now offering opportunities to travel on exchange visitor (J1) visas under the pretext of summer camp jobs. According to sources, WhatsApp groups are circulating messages promoting these “summer camp job” offers for students, teachers, or workers aged 18–28. Since J1 visas allow only a single passenger per application, the price in the market has reportedly surged up to Rs.1 crore. This new route highlights how demand for U.S. travel continues to fuel creative, high-cost schemes despite stricter immigration enforcement.

broken by rocket attacks targeting southern Israeli towns. In response, Israel conducted precision strikes on militant positions in Gaza, raising fears of a renewed escalation.

Trump described the violation as a direct challenge to peace efforts and reiterated the U.S. commitment to protecting Israel while promoting regional stability. “Hamas has a choice: respect the truce and pursue peace, or face consequences that could be severe,” he said.

International observers have expressed concern over the fragile situation, urging both sides to avoid further provocations.

ChatGPT-maker OpenAI releases browser in attempt to rival Google

ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has unveiled an artificial intelligencepowered web browser to challenge competitors like Google, which operates Chrome, the most popular browser in the world.

ChatGPT Atlas does away with the address bar that is a key feature in search, with boss Sam Altman saying it was "built around ChatGPT" as the company made the new browser available on Tuesday on Apple's MacOS operating system.

The arrival of Atlas comes as OpenAI seeks new ways to monetise its massive bet on artificial intelligence (AI) and capitalise on its growing user base.

OpenAI said Atlas would also offer a paid agent mode that conducts searches on its own for users of its popular chatbot.

The agent mode feature will be available only to paying ChatGPT subscribers. It uses the chatbot to

Walmart halts job offers for H-1B visa candidates

Walmart will pause hiring candidates who require H-1B visas, the BBC understands, in response to the Trump administration's new $100,000 (£74,000) fee that has roiled US employers. US President Donald Trump last month signed an executive order imposing the fee for H-1B applicants, citing "abuse" of the programme for skilled foreign workers that undercuts the American workforce.

Walmart tops the list of retail chains that use the programme, with more than 2,000 H-1B visas approved in the first half of 2025.

The retail giant is "committed to hiring and investing in the best talent to serve our customers, while remaining thoughtful about our H-1B hiring approach," a Walmart spokesperson said.

Walmart's decision to pause H-1B hirings was first reported by Bloomberg News.

The retailer is the largest private employer in the US. It employs roughly 1.6 million people across the country. But while Walmart is the largest beneficiary of the H-1B visas in the retail sector, the programme is often associated with the giants of the US tech sector.

US and Australia sign rare earths deal to counter China's dominance

The US and Australia have signed a deal intended to boost supplies of rare earths and other critical minerals, as the Trump administration looks for ways to counter China's dominance of the market.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the deal would support a pipeline of $8.5bn (A$13bn; £6.3bn) "ready-to-go" projects that would expand his country's mining and processing abilities.

It includes $1bn to be invested by the two countries in projects in the US and Australia over the next six months, a framework text says.

The US and Australia have been working on these issues since Trump's first term, but Albanese said the latest agreement would take the partnership to the "next level".

On Monday, US President Donald Trump also commented on Australia's multi-billion dollar submarine deal with

the US and UK, known as Aukus, saying it was "full steam ahead".

Earlier this year, the deal came under the spotlight after the Trump administration said it would review the details to ensure it fit with its "America First" agenda, raising concerns Australia may not be able to buy US submarines to replace its ageing fleet.

Asked if Australia would be getting the submarines, Trump said: "Oh no, they're getting them".

China currently controls about 70% of rare earths mining and 90% of the processing of the materials, which are found in everything from defence equipment to computer chips and cars.

US companies rely heavily on the materials, making them vulnerable this year as China has taken steps to restrict access to supplies in response to new US tariffs and other tensions.

The shares in Australia rare earths mining companies jumped on Tuesday after the announcement.

to Chrome or Microsoft Edge "as more mainstream, beginners, and corporate users will just wait for their favourite browsers to offer this capability." Microsoft Edge already provides many of these capabilities today, Mr Moorhead added. OpenAI's challenge comes a year after Google was declared an illegal monopolist in online search. In a recent decision aimed at prescribing remedies for Google's dominance, the search giant was not ordered to spin off its Chrome browser as US Justice Department lawyers had requested.

A growing number of internet users are opting to use large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT as they search for answers and recommendations. The research firm Datos said that as of July, 5.99% of search on desktop browsers went to LLMs - more than double the figure from a year earlier. Google is also heavily invested in AI, and for the last year has prioritised AI-generated answers to queries in its search results.

India’s Lokpal Plans Purchase of Seven BMW 3-Series Cars at Rs.70 Lakh Each

The office of the Lokpal of India has reportedly floated a public tender to acquire seven white BMW 330 Li (Long Wheel Base). The cost of each of those models stand at around Rs. 70 lakh, making the total price at Rs 5 crore.

The seven-member anti-corruption body, consisting of a chairperson and six other members, floated the tender October 16.

"The Lokpal of India invites open tenders from reputed Agencies for supply of seven BMW 3 Series 330 Li Cars to the Lokpal of India," a number of news publications reported the tender as saying.

According to the tender, the country's anti-corruption ombudsman wants the cars delivered within two weeks, but not later than 30 days from the issue of the supply order by Lokpal.

The Lokpal of India is the first of its kind institution in India under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act 2013, established to investigate allegations of corruption against public officials who fall under the ambit of the aforementioned act. The tender process is currently open for public bidding.

Indian in US Charged With $50K Theft

An Indian man by the name of Mehul Goswami has been arrested by the New York police on accusation of holding two jobs at the same time. More U.S. States

Officially Recognize Diwali

In a heartening nod to the growing Indian-American community, several U.S. states are now formally recognizing Diwali, with some even closing schools or granting paid time off for state employees. California has just made history as the first West Coast state to adopt Diwali as an official holiday. The move places it alongside states such as Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Texas, where the celebration’s cultural and spiritual significance has already found a place in the official calendar. On the East Coast, Pennsylvania was among the first to recognize Diwali. New York and New Jersey soon followed, embedding the festival into school calendars and state observances.

Trump Claims India Still Paying Heavy Tariffs for Russian Oil

US President Donald Trump has doubled down on his claim that India has agreed to restrict its Russian oil purchases. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, the US leader threatened to impose "massive tariffs" on Indian goods unless New Delhi agreed to his terms and halted its purchases.

"I spoke with Prime Minister Modi of India, and he said he's not going to be doing the Russian oil thing," he said, reiterating what he said in the past week. India last week rejected Trump's claim that he had a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi over New Delhi's Russian oil imports. When asked about India's assertion, he

replied, "But if they want to say that, then they'll just continue to pay massive tariffs, and they don't want to do that."

The remarks came amid growing US pressure on Russia's trade partners, particularly in the energy sector, which Washington argues indirectly funds Moscow's war effort in Ukraine.

India Excluded From US Green Card Lottery Until 2029

India will remain excluded from the U.S. Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery -- better known as the “green card lottery” for at least the next several years, likely through 2029. In 2022, over 127,000 Indians moved to the U.S. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), this consistently high migration volume means India will stay off the eligibility list for at least the next three DV cycles 2027, 2028, and 2029. Other countries such as China, South Korea, Canada, and Pakistan are also excluded for the same reason.

The US tariffs - among the highest in the world - include a 25 per cent penalty for transactions with Russia that are a key source of funds for its war in Ukraine. Trump has repeatedly said that those duties would remain on India or even increase if New Delhi does not halt its crude trade with Moscow.

Delhi Faces ‘Very Poor’ Air Quality After Diwali Crackers

New Delhi: Delhi woke up to toxic air on Diwali morning with the air quality index (AQI) worsening to the "very poor" category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city recorded an overall AQI of 335 at 8 am after people burst crackers, causing severe noise pollution and blanketing the national capital in smoke. Out of approximately 38 monitoring stations in Delhi, most recorded AQI levels above 300 ("very poor"), while Anand Vihar (414) and Wazirpur (407) were in the "severe" category.

Kash Patel: FBI Agents Paid Despite Shutdown

“You’ve found a way to get these individuals paid during a government shutdown,” Patel told the president.

“On behalf of the FBI, it’s a great debt that we owe you.”

FBI Director Kash Patel announced that FBI agents will receive their paychecks despite the ongoing federal government shutdown.

During an Oval Office event, Patel thanked President Donald Trump for ensuring law enforcement officers are not left without pay. “You’ve found a way to get these individuals paid during a government shutdown,” Patel told the president. “On behalf of the FBI, it’s a great debt that we owe you.”

Patel did not specify the source of the funds being used to sustain FBI payroll, but the move mirrors similar actions by the Trump administration to protect the pay of other essential federal personnel, including members of the military.

The government shutdown, now entering its third week, began when funding lapsed on October 1. Hundreds of thousands of federal employees have been furloughed, with most expected to receive back pay once Congress approves a funding bill. For now, Patel’s announcement ensures that the nation’s top law enforcement agency remains operational.

Pilot’s Father Moves Supreme Court: “AI-171 Crew Left Defenseless”

New Delhi:

Four months after the tragic AI171 plane crash in Ahmedabad that killed 260 people, the father of pilot Captain Sumeet Sabharwal has moved the Supreme Court, demanding a judicially monitored investigation.

Eighty-eight-year-old Pushkaraj Sabharwal and the Federation of Indian Pilots allege that the current probe by the Aircraft Accidents Investigation Board (AAIB) is “profoundly flawed” and unfairly targets the deceased pilots, who “cannot defend themselves.” The preliminary AAIB report attributed the crash to human error, a claim the petitioners call misleading and incomplete. They argue that the five-member investigation team is dominated by officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) — the same

body whose oversight could be under scrutiny — violating principles of natural justice.

The petition calls for a new inquiry headed by a retired Supreme Court judge and supported by independent aviation experts. It stresses the need for a neutral probe to identify systemic and technical failures rather than scapegoating the crew.

Captain Sabharwal, a veteran pilot with over 15,000 flying hours, commanded the Air India flight that crashed seconds

India Rejects Trump’s Claim on Modi-Russia Oil Deal

New Delhi: India's consistent priority is to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario, New Delhi has said in response to US President Donald Trump's claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured him that India would stop purchasing oil from Russia.

"India is a significant importer of oil and gas. It has been our consistent priority to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario.

Our import policies are guided entirely by this objective," Ministry of External Affairs' official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement. "Ensuring stable energy prices and secured supplies have been the twin goals of our energy policy. This includes broad-basing our energy sourcing and diversifying as appropriate to meet market conditions," the statement added. "Where the US is concerned, we have for many years sought to expand our energy procurement. This has steadily progressed in the last decade. The current Administration has shown interest in deepening energy cooperation with India. Discussions are ongoing," it said.

This comes after the US President claimed that Prime Minister Modi had assured him that India would stop buying oil from Russia. "He's assured me there will be no oil purchases from Russia. He can't do it immediately.

While 88-year-old Pushkaraj Sabharwal is the first petitioner in the matter, the Federation of Indian Pilots is the second

after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing all but one passenger. The AAIB’s “pilot error” narrative has faced widespread criticism from aviation groups. A month later, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau published a preliminary report on what led to the tragedy. The report mentioned a conversation between Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kundar. The report said the cockpit audio has confirmed that one pilot asked, "Why did you cut off?" And the other replied, "I didn't." This led to speculation that a pilot error was behind the shocking tragedy. Pilot associations have criticised the probe team's report.

Modi’s Diwali Amid Navy Drills Off Goa

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will celebrate this Diwali with personnel of the Indian Navy off the Goa coast, according to sources. The Prime Minister's Diwali plan with the Men in White is to celebrate the success of Operation Sindoor, India's counterstrike to the Pahalgam terror attack, the sources said.

Ever since he took over the country's top executive post in 2014, Prime Minister Modi has spent Diwali with armed forces personnel. In 2014, he headed to the Siachen glacier in Ladakh to spend the Festival of Lights with the troops stationed there.

Trump Warns US Envoy: “Stand With America, Not India”

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has again credited himself for preventing a war between India and Pakistan, claiming he has “stopped eight wars in eight months” since taking office in January. Speaking at the White House, Trump said he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize but added that “saving hundreds of millions of lives” mattered more.

Trump said his strategy relied on trade threats, boasting that tariffs had become “a magic wand” for peace.

“India and Pakistan were going at it really hard... I told them no trade deal unless they stopped the war. I even warned of a 200% tariff,” he said, claiming both sides agreed to de-

escalate soon after.

The President also cited Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif’s praise, who reportedly told world leaders in Egypt that Trump “saved millions of lives” by preventing a nuclear conflict with India. Trump added, “That’s what he’s referring to—it was getting very close.”

Addressing the media from the White House, Trump on Wednesday said he has stopped eight wars ever since he took the office in January this year.

Reiterating his stance, Trump said tariffs had made the US “a kind nation” and were now a tool to “stop wars.” Turning to the new US envoy to India, Sergio Gor, he quipped, “You better represent us, not them.” India has consistently maintained that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two militaries.

India Denies Trump’s Claim of Modi Call on Oil Deal

New Delhi: India on Thursday firmly denied claims made by US President Donald Trump that he had a recent telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during which, he alleges, the PM "assured" him India would cease purchasing oil from Russia. Responding to the US President's claim, the Centre clarified that no such conversation had taken place. "Regarding the comment from the US on the energy issue, we have already issued a statement, which you can refer to. As for the telephonic conversation, I can say that there has been no discussion between the Prime Minister and President

Trump," Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, said today. Trump Warns: “Will Wipe Out Hamas If Killings Continue”

President Donald Trump on Thursday warned Hamas "we will have no choice but to go in and kill them" if internal bloodshed persists in Gaza.

The grim warning from Trump came after he previously downplayed the internal violence in the territory since a ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas went into effect last week in the two-year war.

Trump said Tuesday that Hamas had taken out "a couple of gangs that were very bad" and had killed a number of gang members. "That didn't bother me much, to be honest with you," he said. But Trump also made clear he had limited patience for the killings that Hamas was carrying out against rival factions inside the devastated territory. "They will disarm, and if they don't do so, we will disarm them, and it'll happen quickly and perhaps violently," Trump said.

The Hamas-run police maintained a high degree of public security after the militants seized power in Gaza 18 years ago while also cracking down on dissent. The police largely melted away in recent months as Israeli forces seized large areas of Gaza and targeted Hamas security forces with airstrikes.

Responding to the US President's claim, the Centre clarified that no such conversation had taken place.

PM Vows Maoist-Free India, Says 303 Surrendered In 75 Hours

New Delhi: Over 300 Maoists surrendered in the past 24 hours, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Friday night at the NDTV World Summit 2025, highlighting his government's crackdown on domestic terror groups and his 'pain' at the bloodshed and violence the fighting had caused.

"In the last 50-55 years thousands were killed by Maoist terrorists. These Naxals would not allow schools or hospitals to be built... they would not let

doctors enter clinics... they would bomb institutions. Maoist terrorism was an injustice to the young people," he said. "I used to feel agitated... this is the first time I am expressing my pain to the world," he said before a gathering that included Harini Amarasuriya, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, and the former prime ministers of Australia and the United Kingdom, Tony Abbott and Rishi Sunak. This is why my government, the Prime Minister said, has taken particular efforts to reach out to 'these wayward youth' and bring them back into the mainstream. "Today the country is seeing the result of these efforts," the PM said, referring to the mass surrenders this week. "Now, 303 Naxals have surrendered. These were not normal people... they were carrying bounties on their heads, and a huge cache of arms was recovered from them," he said.

Kaun Banega Crorepati 17 recently became the centre of a social media storm when a 10-year-old contestant, Ishit Bhatt from Gujarat, unintentionally rubbed viewers the wrong way with his curt tone and interruptions while speaking to host Amitabh Bachchan. Ayushmann Khurrana Reveals

‘Thamma’ Is About Betaals, Not Vampires

Ayushmann Khurrana has set the record straight about his upcoming film Thamma, co-starring Rashmika Mandanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, saying that contrary to popular speculation the story is not about vampires, but instead draws from Indian folklore and the concept of “betaalism”.

Speaking to Bollywood Bubble ahead of the film’s release, Khurrana explained, “Thamma is about betaals, not vampires. In Indian mythology, a betaal is an evil spirit that haunts cremation grounds and possesses corpses. Hum isko bolte hain betalismbetaal hai, vampire nahi (We call this betaalism — it’s betaal, not vampire).”

He further added, “It’s based on Indian folklore. The film’s title Thamma is derived from

Ashwatthama. Dinesh Vijan came up with the idea, and the most powerful betaal in our story is Thamma.”

Earlier promos had led many viewers to believe the film featured vampires, but Khurrana emphasised the difference, remarking in a chat with Galatta Plus, “We are high on comedy. We have different genres, different situations, and it’s a completely different story. There’s hardly any similarity.”

In the trailer, Rashmika’s character Tadaka introduces Nawazuddin’s Yakshasan as the world’s protector, who eventually turns rogue and becomes Thamma. Ayushmann plays Alok, whose life takes a turn when he appears transformed: his heartbeat gone and fangs emerging. What follows is described as a mix of horror, humour and heart. Key cast also includes Paresh Rawal and Sathyaraj. As part of the production house Maddock Films’ Horror-Comedy Universe (which includes titles such as Stree, Bhediya and Stree 2), Thamma is scheduled to hit cinemas on October 21.

The latest promo for Kaun Banega Crorepati 17 features popular comedians Krushna Abhishek and Sunil Grover taking the hot seat as special guests. The episode’s promo, recently shared by the makers, shows the comedians delivering their trademark humour, leaving both the audience and the host in splits. Sunil Grover, in particular, stood out with his quirky act and mimicry skills.

Diwali Celebrations Trigger Police Warnings in Some U.S. Cities

Across the United States, Diwali 2025 lit up neighborhoods with festive lights, community gatherings, and joyous celebrations. But alongside the cheer, authorities in several states were called to address safety concerns stemming from the misuse of fireworks, late-night disturbances, and litter left behind in public spaces. In Morrisville, North Carolina, police reported that illegal fireworks had been set off at Church Street Park, causing damage to a cricket field and leaving behind piles of debris. Officials called the incident a “threat to community safety” and issued a reminder that private fireworks displays are not permitted on public property under state law.

The official Facebook page of Morrisville Police Department posted: Recently, illegal fireworks were set off at Church Street Park, damaging the cricket field and leaving behind a significant amount of litter. The incident jeopardizes community safety and negatively impacts local sports programs and park visitors. While we appreciate the community interest in celebrating holidays, the private use of fireworks is prohibited in Morrisville parks, greenways, and other public property. This ban includes the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnics which are illegal to use without a permit. The rule is enforced due to safety concerns and noise ordinances.

The firing, discharging, or ignition of fireworks or other pyrotechnics (except with a permit as set forth in the Code of Ordinances, Article II, Section 18-48) requires a permit subject to the approval of the Town of Morrisville and Wake County Fire Marshal (Code of Ordinances, Article

Be aware that certain fireworks are illegal to sell or possess in North Carolina. These include firecrackers, ground spinners, bottle rockets, Roman candles, and aerial fireworks.

Elsewhere, in Jersey City, New Jersey, videos circulating online showed fire and police crews clearing a street covered in the remnants of Diwali crackers as

crowds looked on. Witnesses said the celebrations, which included prolonged use of fireworks, were eventually halted by authorities concerned about safety and noise levels.

Reports of similar incidents emerged from parts of Texas, where residents said police had been patrolling neighborhoods with high concentrations of Indian residents to discourage fireworks use. Locals in Frisco and Melissa described officers warning that violations could result in tickets or fines. While the majority of Diwali events across the country were peaceful and well-organized, many within the Indian American community expressed disappointment over the few instances of reckless behavior. Several commentators on social media called such acts “disrespectful” and “careless,”

urging greater awareness of local laws and sensitivity toward shared public spaces. The discussions have also reignited a broader debate within diaspora circles — about how traditional celebrations from India can be adapted responsibly to Western civic norms. As one community leader noted, “Festivities should bring light, not friction.” Despite these isolated incidents, Diwali 2025 was among the most widely celebrated yet in the U.S., with vibrant community events held from coast to coast. However, many Indians took to social media to condemn such disruptive celebrations and urged everyone to maintain law and order so that the entire community does not get a bad rap for celebrating their festivals.

The event brought together Houston Mayor John Whitmire, Consul General of India D.C. Manjunath, elected officials, members of the Consular Corps, and representatives from Houston’s dynamic Indian diaspora for an evening filled with light, music, and cultural pride.

In his remarks, Consul General D.C. Manjunath expressed gratitude to Mayor Whitmire and the City of Houston for their commitment to celebrating diversity and fostering

cultural understanding.

“Celebrating Diwali at City Hall is a reflection of the shared values that bind India and the United States — unity in diversity, peace, and hope,” he said,

highlighting how the festival transcends borders and symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness.

Mayor John Whitmire commended the Indian-American community for its contributions to Houston’s cultural and economic fabric, reaffirming the city’s dedication to inclusivity and mutual respect among all communities.

The celebration featured traditional diya lighting, cultural performances, and community participation from local organizations, creating a festive atmosphere that showcased India’s rich heritage.

New H-1B Fee Hike Will Cripple U.S. Small Businesses, GOPIO Cautions

HARTFORD, CT – Congressman Jim Himes (D-CT) expressed strong support for the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO)’s opposition to the Trump Administration’s proposed $100,000 H-1B visa fee increase, warning that it could cause the U.S. to lose vital global talent.

During a virtual GOPIO-CT meeting on October 9, 2025—convened by GOPIO Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham—Himes, Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee, said the policy would drive skilled professionals abroad, calling it a “great loss” for the U.S. He urged that U.S.–India relations, though stable in trade and defense, be further strengthened. GOPIO leaders argued that the massive fee hike would devastate small and medium-sized businesses. GOPIO-CT President Mahesh Jhangiani said such firms “cannot survive” the added cost. Business leader Prasad Chintalapudi of Panzer Solutions noted that smaller

firms employing H-1B workers also generate local jobs and keep projects in the U.S., citing leaders like Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella as H-1B success stories.

Attorney Nandita Ruchandani emphasized that H-1B holders include doctors, engineers, and teachers contributing to communities and taxes. She warned the sudden policy change could force closures of small firms with slim profit margins, such as engineering

companies building municipal systems. Dr. Abraham stressed that limiting skilled immigration would undermine America’s economic edge, noting the H-1B program’s $200 billion annual benefit versus $8.5 billion in costs. “If we push talent away,” he said, “countries like Canada, Germany, and China will gain.” Jhangiani and Dr. S.K. Lo of the Asian American Unity Coalition urged united community action against such “anti-India” measures.

Trump Extends Diwali Greetings to IndianAmericans

WASHINGTON, DC – US President Donald Trumpextended his greetings on Diwali, describing it as a “timeless reminder of light’s victory over darkness.” In his presidential message, Trump said, “Today, I send my best wishes to every American celebrating Diwali — the Festival of Lights.” He highlighted the festival as a moment for families and friends to unite, strengthen bonds of hope, and embrace a spirit of renewal. “As millions light diyas and lanterns, we rejoice in the eternal truth that good will always triumph over evil,” he added, wishing everyone peace, prosperity, and serenity. Trump’s message follows Diwali greetings from several U.S. officials and lawmakers across party lines. FBI Director Kash Patel also extended warm wishes on October 20, calling Diwali a global celebration of good prevailing over evil. Meanwhile, Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy shared his wishes on X, writing, “Happy Diwali! May the light prevail over darkness.”

Together, these messages reflect a growing recognition of Diwali’s significance in American life — celebrating not only cultural diversity but also the universal values of hope, renewal, and the enduring victory of light over darkness.

NYC Student Homelessness Hits Record High:

154,000 Without Stable Housing

NEW YORK, NY — More than 154,000 New York City public school students— nearly one in every seven—experienced homelessness during the last school year, marking an all-time high, according to a new report by Advocates for Children of New York (AFC). This is the tenth consecutive year that over 100,000 students in the city’s public schools have been without stable housing, underscoring a worsening crisis in the nation’s largest school district. For the first time, the total number of students in temporary housing

surpassed 150,000. Data from the New York State Education Department shows that of these students, about 65,000 (42 percent) lived in city shelters, while over 82,000 (53 percent) were “doubled up,” or sharing housing with others due to loss of housing or financial hardship. Every borough saw an increase from the prior school year, with the Bronx reporting the highest rates, followed by Manhattan. In some districts—such as East Harlem,

Highbridge, Brownsville, and Bushwick— more than one in five students were identified as homeless.

Maria Odom, executive director of AFC, said the city is “currently failing students” who live in shelters. She emphasized the need for a coordinated, citywide effort to ensure that homeless students receive consistent access to school and essential support services. “Ensuring students who are homeless receive the support they need to be successful in school must be a top priority for the next Mayor,” Odom stated, urging leadership to “break down bureaucratic silos and

reverse these alarming trends.” The AFC also called on state officials to revise the Foundation Aid per-pupil funding formula to include additional support for students in temporary housing or foster care. “We urge the Governor and State Legislature to change the formula in this year’s budget to provide school districts with funding to help address the unique needs of students who are homeless,” the organization wrote. Without such reforms, advocates warn, the system will continue to fail tens of thousands of children who depend on public schools for stability, safety, and a chance at a better future.

WASHINGTON, DC – The US Chamber of Commerce, the nation’s largest business organization, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its plan to impose a $100,000 H-1B visa application fee, calling it “unlawful.”

Filed in a Washington district court on October 17, the lawsuit argues that the proposed fee would “inflict significant harm on American businesses,” forcing companies to either “dramatically increase labor costs or hire fewer highly skilled employees for whom domestic replacements are not readily

available.” The Chamber described Trump’s September 19 proclamation as “plainly unlawful” and “a boon to America’s economic rivals.”

“The proclamation is misguided policy,” the Chamber said, emphasizing that while the President has broad powers

over immigration, those powers “cannot contradict laws passed by Congress.”

Neil Bradley, the Chamber’s Executive Vice President, warned that such a fee would make it “cost-prohibitive for U.S. employers to access global talent,” at a time when the economy “requires more

workers, not fewer.”

Representing about 300,000 direct members and over three million companies nationwide, the Chamber’s suit marks the second major legal challenge to the H-1B policy this month. Earlier, unions, educators, and religious groups sued the administration in California, arguing that the fee was “unprecedented, unjustified, and unlawful.” That lawsuit, backed by advocacy organizations like the Justice Action Center, South Asian American Justice Collaborative, and Democracy Forward Foundation, also stressed the program’s vital economic role. Indiaborn professionals accounted for over 70% of all approved H-1B visas in 2024.

Former ICE Chief Warns Trump’s Hardline Immigration Plans Endanger Agents

Former acting ICE Director John

CHICAGO, IL — Federal agents are facing intense scrutiny over their conduct during President Trump’s immigration crackdown. Former acting ICE Director John Sandweg told CBS News that agents have been placed “in a terrible position,” operating “in a city where they don’t belong.” Viral cellphone videos have shown aggressive encounters—from vehicle crashes to forceful arrests—by both ICE and U.S. Border Patrol, whose agents are typically trained for drug and human smuggling operations along the southern border

but are now deployed in major cities like Chicago.

After federal agents used tear gas on a crowd following a vehicle crash on Chicago’s South Side, a federal judge ordered that agents wear body cameras amid lawsuits alleging excessive force against protesters and journalists. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker welcomed the ruling, saying he expects “more cases brought against ICE and CBP.”

Sandweg emphasized that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents generally follow the same “use of force” standards as local law enforcement, requiring “reasonable” responses and de-escalation. DHS, in response to viral clips, defended its agents, citing a “growing and dangerous trend” of attacks on law enforcement.

Veteran agent Jerry Robinette, with over three decades in law enforcement, described the climate as “stressful for both sides.” He noted that agents have strict orders “not to back down,” calling the situation “uncharted territory.” Robinette added, “We’ve never had to deal with these kinds of extreme confrontations before—this is something totally foreign to us.”

USISPF Congratulates Sergio Gor and S. Paul Kapur on Their Senate Confirmations

WASHINGTON, DC - The US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) congratulates Ambassador Sergio Gor on his Senate confirmation to serve as US Ambassador to India and as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian affairs, and Dr. S. Paul Kapur on his confirmation as Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA).

Dr. Mukesh Aghi, USISPF President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), said, “Ambassador Gor’s confirmation is timely and decisive, and we express our deepest gratitude and respect to President Trump for assigning a trusted confidant who can help execute the President’s vision. Ambassador Gor’s confirmation is a signal to New Delhi that the US-India relationship is a top priority for the administration and the region, and together, through the right diplomatic channels, we can iron out the creases and reach consensus.”

Ambassador Gor now joins the ranks of such storied US Ambassadors to India as John Kenneth Galbraith, Daniel P. Moynihan, Frank G Wisner II, Kenneth I Juster and Richard R Verma, all vital architects of the US-India relationship that has stood the test of time

for nearly 80 years. In recent decades, that relationship has grown to become the most important strategic partnership of the 21st century. While acknowledging a few recent “hiccups,” Ambassador Gor stressed during his confirmation hearing that the two great democracies were "not that far apart" on trade issues and reiterated the importance of India as a democratic and strategic counterweight to China in the IndoPacific region. We strongly agree with Ambassador Gor that Washington and New Delhi have more

in common with each other than with Moscow or Beijing.

Dr. Aghi also congratulated Assistant SCA Kapur and said “In Dr. Kapur, we have a stellar academic and a South Asia scholar who is second to none in understanding the security of the region and New Delhi’s concerns vis-a-vis Beijing and Islamabad.

Dr. Kapur was a stellar academic at Claremont McKenna College, and as a Claremont alum myself, I am deeply honored to see one of the university’s finest academics answer the call of public service and in this crucial policy role at the State Department.”

With the confirmations of Ambassador Gor and Assistant Secretary Kapur, we look forward to progress on trade issues, technology cooperation, energy partnership, and education ties. We also hope for confirmation of the Quad Leader’s Summit later this year, to strengthen the strong personal kinship and personal bonds between the leaders of our two nations.

At USISPF, we strongly support the President’s economic agenda and look forward to working with both Assistant Secretary Kapur and Ambassador Gor in Washington and New Delhi respectively.

Governor Newsom Announces Launch Of California’s $11 Insulin Brand

The initiative fulfills a goal from Newsom’s first executive order in 2019 to make prescription drugs affordable and transparent. State officials praised the program as a milestone in drug affordability, emphasizing transparency and equity for uninsured and underinsured Californians.

SACRAMENTO, CA –California has made history by becoming the first state to produce and sell its own insulin, setting a national benchmark for affordable healthcare. Governor Gavin Newsom announced that starting January 1, 2026, CalRx biosimilar insulin glargine pens will be available statewide for just $11 each—or $55 for a five-pack. The move, in partnership with nonprofit manufacturer Civica Rx and supplier Biocon Biologics, aims to drastically reduce costs for millions who rely on insulin to survive.

“This is about putting people over profits,” said Newsom. “No one should have to ration insulin or go into debt to stay alive.” The initiative fulfills a goal from Newsom’s first

executive order in 2019 to make prescription drugs affordable and transparent.

State officials praised the program as a milestone in drug affordability, emphasizing transparency and equity for uninsured and underinsured Californians. Patient advocates called it a life-changing development.

The CalRx initiative, which also lowered costs for naloxone, continues to explore affordable access to vaccines and other essential medicines. Complementary legislation, including SB 40 and SB 41, further regulates drug pricing and pharmacy benefit managers— cementing California’s leadership in fighting the high cost of healthcare.

LA County Declares Emergency to Aid Residents Hit by Raids

LOS ANGELES , CA —Los Angeles County officials voted to declare a state of emergency in response to ongoing federal immigration raids that have left many residents financially distressed. The declaration gives the county expanded authority to provide rent relief and other support services to residents who have lost income as a result of the immigration crackdown. The raids, which intensified over the summer, have sparked fear across immigrant communities, with reports of detentions at bus stops, car washes, farms, and other public places. In some instances, even U.S. citizens have been mistakenly detained. County supervisors said the emergency designation will also help channel state funds for legal aid and community assistance, with an online application portal for rent relief expected within two months. Supervisors Lindsey Horvath and Janice Hahn, who introduced the motion, said the raids have destabilized families and

local businesses alike. Hahn described a surge of calls from constituents unable to locate detained relatives or pay rent after a family member’s arrest. Los Angeles, where about a third of the 10 million residents are foreign-born, has seen widespread anxiety—some cities even canceled summer events as residents stayed home out of fear. Since June, the region has become a flashpoint in the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration strategy, which triggered mass protests and the temporary deployment of National Guard and Marine units.

The board voted 4–1 in favor of the declaration, with Supervisor Kathryn Barger dissenting, arguing that the situation did not legally qualify as an emergency and could invite lawsuits similar to those during the county’s COVID-19 eviction moratorium. Landlord groups voiced similar concerns, warning that another rent freeze or eviction ban could deepen financial losses from the pandemic years. Daniel Yukelson, CEO of the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles, said that while property owners sympathize with affected tenants, he saw no evidence that ICE actions have broadly prevented rent payments. He cautioned that further rent deferrals could “lead to the deterioration and loss of affordable housing” across the region.

Nobel Duo’s Departure Stirs Debate on U.S. Academic Freedom

BOSTON, MA – Nobel laureates Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo are leaving the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to join the University of Zurich (UZH), where they will establish the Lemann Center for Development, Education, and Public Policy. The 2019 Nobel Economics Prize winners, celebrated for their pioneering experimental approach to alleviating global poverty, will co-lead the new center as endowed professors funded by the Lemann Foundation. Their initiative aims to bridge academic research with global education policy and tangible social impact.

The move has fueled speculation about a “brain drain” from the United States, as more scholars express concern over reduced research funding and perceived threats to academic freedom under the Trump administration.

Earlier this year, Duflo co-signed an editorial in Le

Monde denouncing “unprecedented attacks” on U.S. science. In response, MIT reaffirmed its commitment to academic independence, rejecting participation in the administration’s proposed “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education,” which would have tied federal funding to ideological reforms.

UZH President Michael Schaepman

praised the appointment, calling Banerjee and Duflo “two of the world’s most influential economists.” Duflo noted that the new center would enable them to “expand our work, combining research, mentorship, and real-world policy engagement.” Their transition marks a significant moment for international academia, positioning Zurich as a new global hub for development economics and evidence-based policymaking.

UZH President Michael Schaepman praised the appointment, calling Banerjee and Duflo “two of the world’s most influential economists.”

Sikh Group Slams

SACRAMENTO, CA — The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) voiced strong disappointment after Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed SB 509, a bill aimed at combating transnational repression and enhancing law enforcement training to protect California’s Sikh community.

“Transnational repression is not just a Sikh issue—it is a threat to all Californians and to the fundamental values of safety and freedom,” said Kiran Kaur Gill, SALDEF’s Executive Director.

“The veto of SB 509 is a setback for the safety and security of all Californians. Together, we will continue working toward a state that truly protects all its people.”

SB 509 would have equipped law enforcement with better tools and training to recognize and respond to threats from foreign governments targeting activists, dissidents, and community leaders in the U.S. The bill had gained broad support from Sikh Americans, civil rights groups, and community allies who organized petitions, participated in hearings, and directly advocated with lawmakers.

SALDEF expressed gratitude to Senator Anna Caballero for championing the measure and to the many organizations and individuals who stood behind it.

Despite the veto, SALDEF reaffirmed its determination to continue pursuing policies that protect the Sikh community and other vulnerable groups from international threats, ensure law enforcement readiness, and uphold civil rights across California.

DHS Imposes $1,000 Immigration Parole Fee to Curb System Misuse

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Thursday that migrants paroled into the United States will now be required to pay a new $1,000 immigration parole fee, aimed at “instituting accountability and preventing rampant fraud of the parole system.”

According to a DHS news release, the fee is designed to “strengthen oversight of the immigration parole system and deter its misuse.”

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the new measure addresses what the agency described as past abuses of the system.

“The Biden Administration abused America’s immigration system and turned parole into a de facto amnesty program, allowing millions of unvetted illegal aliens into the U.S., no questions asked, to the detriment of all Americans,” McLaughlin said.

“Through the implementation of this new fee, President Trump and Secretary Noem are guaranteeing that foreign nationals who wish to stay here have skin in the game and do not exploit

Nikki Haley’s Son Hits Back at Ramaswamy’s Remarks

“Jesus Christ is God, and there is no other God,” the student declared. “How can you represent the 64 percent of Ohioans who are Christian if you’re not one of them?”

WASHINGTON, DC -What began as a moment of composure and clarity for Vivek Ramaswamy quickly devolved into fresh religious sparring — courtesy of Nalin Haley.

Speaking at Montana State University during a Turning Point USA event, the Ohio gubernatorial candidate was confronted by a student who questioned whether a Hindu could truly represent a Christianmajority state.

“Jesus Christ is God, and there is no other God,” the student declared. “How can you represent the 64 percent of Ohioans who are Christian if you’re not one of them?” He added that someone “of Indian origin” could not “conserve” America’s founding values.

the system. This immigration parole fee notice is another tool to stop the degradation of our immigration system and restore law and order to our country,” she added.

The new $1,000 parole fee will be assessed once the parole grant becomes effective, not when a request is filed or a travel document is issued. DHS also stated that the fee amount may be adjusted annually based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), with updates published each year in the Federal Register.

Fee collection will be handled jointly by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The announcement follows the Trump administration’s broader push to tighten immigration policies, including efforts to mass deport undocumented migrants and restrict certain legal immigration pathways. One recent proposal—to raise the H-1B visa application fee to $100,000 in an effort to prioritize American workers—has already prompted a lawsuit from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Ramaswamy, composed and deliberate, offered a succinct defense of both his faith and his candidacy. “With due respect, I believe in one true God — from the Vedanta tradition of Advaita philosophy,” he said. “That God resides in all of us and appears in different forms. I’m an ethical monotheist. And I’m not running to be pastor of Ohio — I’m running to be governor.”

His answer was widely praised for its grace and focus on shared principles. But soon after, Nalin Haley — son of former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley — took to X to accuse Ramaswamy of disrespecting Christianity.

“Comparing the Holy Trinity to your 330 million gods is blasphemous and disrespectful,” he wrote. “If you’re going to run in a Christian state, at least learn our faith.”

Haley’s post triggered immediate backlash. One user accused him of “pandering to racists,” while another told him, “You’ll never be one of us.” Haley fired back that he was defending Christianity, not whiteness — before descending into a heated exchange with author Richard Hanania that ended with a personal insult about Hanania’s appearance.

ATLANTA, GA – The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) has expressed grave alarm over a surge in deadly violence targeting hotel owners, citing three killings within 72 hours. In Charlotte, NC, hoteliers Anilkumar Patel and Pankaj Patel were fatally shot on Thursday; a suspect has been arrested.

In Pittsburgh, PA, Rakesh Ehagaban was killed in a shooting that also injured a police officer and the suspect. These incidents follow the September murder of a hotel manager in Dallas, TX, and earlier 2024 killings of hoteliers in Oklahoma City, OK, and Sheffield, AL. “These are not just statistics — these are members of our community, our friends, and our colleagues,” said AAHOA Chair Kamalesh (KP) Patel. “Our hearts break for their families. No one should ever face such danger while serving guests and supporting their livelihoods.”

Chicago Immigration Agents Face New Oversight With Mandatory Body Cameras

HiIndia

CHICAGO, IL — Troubled by reports of violent clashes between immigration agents and the public, U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis announced Thursday that all federal immigration officers operating in the Chicago area must begin wearing body cameras. The decision follows a series of confrontations— some involving tear gas—that erupted during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown known as “Operation Midway Blitz.” Judge Ellis, visibly concerned, remarked that she was “a little startled” by televised footage of the incidents and emphasized that she “lives in Chicago” and is not “blind” to what’s happening in her city. She ordered a senior immigration official to appear in court next week to explain the ongoing enforcement operation, which has already resulted in more than 1,000 arrests since September. The ruling comes amid growing community pushback against U.S.

Monte Vista Hosts First Student-Run Hackathon

DANVILLE, CA — A group of Monte Vista High School students are organizing the school’s first student-led hackathon, Stang Hacks, named after the school’s mustang mascot.

The event will challenge middle and high school students to design AIpowered tools that benefit society, with over $1,000 in prizes up for grabs. Teams will have 12 hours to develop and present their projects to a panel of judges that includes Monte Vista alumni and industry professionals.

“The projects we’re looking for are centered on social good and community benefit,” said co-founder Ayush Rane, who is organizing Stang Hacks along with classmates Devin Liu, Thomas Liu, and Edison Law. “We may introduce themed tracks such as education, healthcare, or climate, but overall, students will have creative freedom to develop an app that helps society in any way they choose.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Neighborhood groups have organized to monitor and record ICE activities, particularly outside the agency’s Broadview facility, where protests have become a regular occurrence. Another federal judge had earlier halted the administration’s attempt to deploy National Guard troops to assist immigration officers in Illinois, citing civil rights concerns. Ellis, who had previously banned

agents from using riot-control tactics on peaceful demonstrators and required them to wear visible badges, expressed frustration that her earlier orders might not be followed, prompting the new camera mandate.

While Justice Department attorney Sean Skedzielewski criticized the decision as being influenced by “selectively edited media reports,” Ellis maintained that cameras would ensure transparency and accountability in law enforcement interactions. Governor JB Pritzker praised the judge’s move, accusing the federal government of misleading the public about prior arrests and fatal encounters. The Department of Homeland Security condemned the order as “judicial activism,” though Ellis countered that body cameras would simply document the truth. ICE has previously begun limited deployment of cameras in other cities, but Chicago’s directive marks one of the most sweeping federal mandates tied directly to public unrest over immigration enforcement.

FBI Warns: ‘764’ Group Luring Teens on Social Media

CHICAGO, IL - The FBI is warning of a disturbing rise in cases linked to an online extremist network known as “764,” a violent collective targeting teens in Chicago and across the globe. Agents say the group thrives on manipulation, coercing young victims into performing increasingly depraved acts as part of what the bureau describes as its goal of “destroying society.” Ryan Maxwell, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI Chicago Field Office, said the group’s activities are so serious that investigations are being handled by

the Counterterrorism Branch, not just Cybercrime units, underscoring the threat level.

According to the FBI, 764 members use social media and gaming platforms to identify and groom victims—often minors between 10 and 17, typically female— through manipulation, blackmail, and emotional coercion. The group extorts children into creating sexually explicit content, acts of self-harm, animal abuse, and even violent crimes such as murder or suicide. In one case, California resident Dong Hwan Kim was arrested and charged with producing child pornography as part of his participation in 764. Authorities allege he and others ran a server where they extorted minors to perform explicit acts and post them publicly.

The FBI urges families to be vigilant and to watch for warning signs such as behavioral changes, isolation, or signs of self-harm. Maxwell emphasized that victims should never feel ashamed to come forward, as the FBI offers specialized victim services to help survivors process trauma.

Bay Area Teen to Showcase AI & Cybersecurity Project at MIT

DANVILLE, CA – As October marks Cybersecurity Awareness Month, 17-year-old Vaishnav Anand, a student at The Athenian School, is transforming awareness into action through pioneering research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. On October 11, he presented his work on GAN-based deepfake detection in satellite imagery at the IEEE Undergraduate Research Technology Conference (URTC) hosted by MIT. Among 164 global presenters, he was one of the few high school students selected to share the stage with undergraduates from leading universities such as Carnegie Mellon, UCLA, and Georgia Tech. His research—which now integrates diffusion models to achieve up to 99% accuracy in detecting falsified satellite images— earned widespread praise for its technical rigor and its implications for geospatial integrity and national security. Beyond research, Vaishnav is passionate about making cybersecurity education accessible to youth. His book, Cybersecurity, the first in his Tech Demystified series, simplifies complex topics of online safety and privacy and is now used in youth programs across the country. His upcoming book, AI and Deepfakes, will delve into artificial intelligence’s double-edged influence on society.
