Trump says rare earths deal 'done' with China

Talks aimed at cooling tensions between the US and China have ended in a "deal", according to US President Donald Trump.

He said China had agreed to supply US companies with magnets and rare earth metals, while the US would walk back its threats to revoke visas of Chinese students.

"Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval from President Xi and me," Trump wrote on his media platform Truth Social.

It followed two days of intense talks in London to resolve conflicts that had emerged since the two sides agreed a truce in May, after a rapid escalation of tariffs had nearly paralysed trade between the world's two largest economies.

But the limited nature of the announcement underscored questions the White House is facing about whether its tariff strategy can quickly yield solid trade deals. Speaking on Thursday, President Trump said he will set unilateral tariff rates with trading partners in

Donald Trump "Acknowledged" Elon Musk's Apology

Washington: White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday (local time) said that US President Donald Trump acknowledged Tesla CEO Elon Musk's apology for his comments. Ms Leavitt, in her media briefing, said that after the incident, the government has started to focus on the business of the American people.

"The President acknowledged the statement that Elon put out this morning and he is appreciative of it and we are continuing to focus on the business of the American people," she said.

When asked if the administration started a review of Mr Musk's government contract- something that the President said he's considering, Leavitt said nothing like that has started as of now.

"Currently have no efforts have been made on that front as far as I'm aware," she said.

On Wednesday, Mr Musk said in a post on X, "I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far."

Mr Musk called President Trump on Monday night, as per CNN, before saying early on Wednesday that he regrets some of his social media posts about the President during their very public blow-up last week.

the next one or two weeks.

The US president said he would send out letters specifying the terms of the new deals ahead of a 9 July deadline to reimpose higher tariffs on countries around the world. Separately, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expected the US would extend the existing pause on some of its most aggressive tariffs to allow trade talks with other countries to continue.

Trump Launches

Gold Card Site with $5M Wishlist

Washington:

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday launched a website for immigrants to register their interest in signing up for the long-touted "gold card," which would offer successful foreigners a path to US citizenship after paying $5 million to the government.

“FOR FIVE MILLION $DOLLARS, THE TRUMP CARD IS COMING!”

Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday. “Thousands have been calling and asking how they can sign up to ride a beautiful road in gaining access to the Greatest Country and Market anywhere in the World.” The site is currently only allowing people interested in 'Trump card' to register their name, region, email address and if the applicant is applying for themselves or as a business.

Judge says Trump cannot deport or detain Mahmoud Khalil

A federal judge said on Wednesday that the Trump administration cannot deport or continue to detain Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University activist who was arrested by immigration officers in March.

But Judge Michael Farbiarz put a pause on his injunction until the morning of 13 June to give the federal government time to appeal. Mr Khalil will be detained at least until that point. In his written decision, Judge Farbiarz said there was no compelling interest to keep Mr Khalil in custody or to deport the 30-year-old, who is a lawful permanent resident.

Since he was arrested at his home in New York, Mr Khalil has been held at a detention centre in Louisiana.

Calm returns to Los Angeles after hundreds arrested

An uneasy calm has descended over Los Angeles after the first night of a curfew lifted on Wednesday, as cities across the US brace for more protests.

In Los Angeles, nearly 400 people have so far been arrested, including 330 undocumented migrants and 157 people arrested for assault and obstruction, including one for the attempted murder of a police officer.

Federal prosecutors have so far charged two men for throwing Molotov cocktails at police officers in two separate incidents.

A total of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines have been deployed to help quell the unrest. Some of those National Guard troops are now authorised to detain people until police can arrest them.

US to partially evacuate embassy in Iraq as Iran tensions rise

Non-essential US embassy staff and their dependants in Baghdad are to be evacuated from Iraq due to heightened security risks, US government sources have said. Officials did not say exactly what prompted the removal, however, on Wednesday, US officials were told Israel was ready to launch an operation into Iran, the BBC's US partner CBS reported, citing officials familiar with the matter. The officials said this was part of the reason the US advised some Americans to leave the region, and that the US anticipated Iran could retaliate on certain US sites in Iraq.

It comes as US talks over Iran's nuclear programme appear to have stalled in recent days.

US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff is still planning to meet Iran officials for the sixth rounds of talks on Sunday, the officials told CBS.

A US state department official told the BBC: "We are constantly assessing the appropriate personnel posture at all our embassies.

"Based on our latest analysis, we decided to reduce the footprint of our mission in Iraq."

Trump spoke about Iran at an appearance at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday, telling reporters Americans were advised to leave the region "because it could be a dangerous place, and we'll see what happens".

Trump also reiterated that the US did not want Iran to develop a nuclear weapon: "We're not going to allow that." The president has hoped to strike a deal to stop Tehran developing a nuclear weapon.

Ending Asylum Hotels For Immigrants Will Save Taxpayers Rs 10,600 Crore: UK Government

British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves has announced that the UK will stop using hotels to house asylum seekers by the end of the current parliament in 2029. The move, part of her first comprehensive spending review, aims to cut rising costs and reduce reliance on temporary accommodations. Currently, the UK spends over £8 million (approximately Rs. 85 crore) daily on hotel stays for about 32,000 asylum seekers, according to Home Office data. Reeves said her new funding plan—including a transformation fund—will tackle the asylum backlog, speed up appeal hearings, and return those without legal rights to stay, potentially saving taxpayers £1 billion (around Rs.10,600 crore) annually.

French Doctor Says Greta Thunberg Abused by Israeli Authorities

A French doctor who was on board the humanitarian aid boat that was on its way to Gaza, and which was subsequently intercepted by Israeli authorities, alleged that they were abusive towards the passengers.

The boat also had Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg onboard, and the doctor, Baptiste André said that the Israeli authorities mocked and deliberately deprived passengers of sleep, particularly Thunberg.

Ukraine Recovers 1,212 Bodies in Latest Russia Swap

The bodies of 1,212 Ukrainian soldiers have been returned from Russia, Kyiv says, as part of a prisoner exchange agreement between the warring countries.

In return Russia received 27 bodies, Moscow's chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky said.

The prisoner exchange deal was the only tangible result of peace talks in Turkey last week, with both sides agreeing to hand over as many as 6,000 dead bodies each, as well as sick and heavily wounded prisoners of war, and those aged under 25.

The UK government plans to stop using hotels to house asylum seekers by 2029, aiming to save 1 billion pounds annually.

Reeves’ review, which outlines departmental budgets through 2030, also includes an extra £280 million (approximately Rs. 2,975 crore) per year by 2028–29 to strengthen the

Mob Vandalises Tagore Home Over Parking Dispute

Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home, the historic Kachharibari in Bangladesh's Sirajganj district, was vandalised by a mob following a confrontation between a visitor and a museum employee. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and temporarily closed the site to the public.

According to local media reports, the unrest began when a visitor arrived at the Rabindra Kachharibari, also known as the Rabindra Memorial Museum, with his family. A dispute reportedly broke out between the visitor and staff at the entrance over a motorcycle parking fee. Tensions escalated, and the visitor was allegedly confined in an office room and physically assaulted by staff. The incident sparked local outrage.

On Tuesday, residents formed a human chain in protest, which was followed by a mob storming the premises. The auditorium of the Kachharibari was vandalised, and a director of the institution was physically attacked.

In response, the Department of Archaeology has formed a three-

member committee to investigate the attack, according to the state-run BSS news agency. The committee has been instructed to submit its findings within five working days. Speaking to reporters, Md Habibur Rahman, custodian of the Kachharibari, said the site has been temporarily closed to visitors due to “unavoidable circumstances.” He added that the entire premises is now under official surveillance.

Located in Shahzadpur, in Bangladesh's Rajshahi division, Kachharibari is both a historic residence and former revenue office of the Tagore family.

newly launched Border Security Command.

The decision follows growing public and political concern over the longterm use of hotels and the burden on the UK’s foreign aid budget. A recent BBC report highlighted the government’s struggle to reduce aid spent on housing asylum seekers.

The Home Office confirmed its commitment to phasing out hotel use and accelerating asylum case processing. Officials are under pressure to find more cost-effective and sustainable solutions as the number of arrivals continues to strain public resources.

This shift marks a significant policy change as the government seeks to streamline immigration processes and reduce taxpayer expenses.

Ex-CM Vijay Rupani Among Victims

169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals

An Air India flight (AI-171) en route from Ahmedabad to London crashed during take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area. The aircraft took off at 1:38 PM on June 12, 2025, and the crash occurred just two minutes later at 1:40 PM. Crash Location and Initial Reports

According to preliminary reports, the crash took place near IGB Compound, close to Ghoda Camp in Meghaninagar. Witnesses reported seeing massive plumes of smoke billowing into the sky, spreading panic in nearby residential areas. Initial findings suggest the rear portion of the aircraft struck a tree during take-off, possibly due to a technical fault, causing the plane to lose control and crash.

The aircraft then collided with the Atulyam Building, a staff residential quarters near the airport. The plane impacted the third, fourth, and fifth floors of the building, triggering a devastating fire. The building, which houses around 50 residents including intern doctors and their families, has suffered severe structural damage and is at risk of collapsing.

PM Modi, Top Ministers Respond Immediately

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Home Minister Amit Shah, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, instructing them to ensure all possible assistance is provided. The Civil Aviation Minister is en route to Ahmedabad, while Health Minister Rushikesh Patel has already reached the site. Amit Shah also spoke with the Chief Minister to review the situation. CM Bhupendra Patel, who was in Surat at the time, is now heading to Ahmedabad.

Airport Closed Indefinitely

Due to the scale of the tragedy, Ahmedabad Airport has been shut indefinitely. All flights have been suspended until further notice. A green corridor has been created for the swift transport of injured victims.

Pilot Issued Mayday Call

According to information from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), shortly after take-off, pilot Sumit Sabharwal issued a Mayday call to air traffic control (ATC). However, no signal or response was received from ATC before the aircraft collided with the tree and then the building.

Casualties and Injuries

The crash has claimed more than 150 lives, with former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay

Rupani among the deceased. Around 15 resident doctors from the Civil Hospital have been injured in the incident. The building caught fire after the crash, and large clouds of smoke were seen rising from the site. Black Box Recovered

The aircraft’s black box has been successfully recovered by the Airport Authority. This critical device will help investigators determine the exact cause of the crash and understand what went wrong during the take-off.

Emergency Helpline Numbers Released

The State Emergency Operation Center has activated a control room in response to the crash. Concerned relatives and citizens can contact the following numbers for updates: Landline: 079-232-51900 | Mobile: 9978405304

Rescue Operations Underway

BSF teams have arrived at the crash site and launched immediate rescue efforts. The priority is to rescue those trapped in the building, provide urgent medical care, and secure the crash zone for investigation. Further updates are awaited as investigations continue into one of the worst aviation disasters in the region in recent years.

Gujarat Sees Sharp Rise in Visa Fraud Amid Stricter Global Immigration Rules

Over the past three years, Canada has tightened its visa policies, and following the Trump administration's rise to power, changes and stricter rules in daily visa procedures have led to a sharp increase in visa fraud cases in Gujarat. Since March 2022, police have registered 114 cases related to visa fraud—an increase of 113% compared to the norm. During the post-COVID period (2022–2023), visa fraud cases rose by 29% across various regions of Gujarat.

203 Agents Arrested in the Last 18 Months

Many complaints have been registered involving unauthorized agents facilitating foreign travel, using fake passports or documents, misleading students with information about fake or unrecognized universities, overcharging for services beyond visa processing, and other types of fraud. In the last 18 months, 203 agents have been arrested in connection with various visarelated scams. These include visa fraud, passport fraud, and illegal

migration activities.

Multiple High-Profile Visa Fraud Cases in the State

In the past two years, five major visa fraud cases have been recorded in Gujarat:

• In Mehsana, four individuals were arrested in a visa fraud case.

• In Ahmedabad, a fraud involving Rs. 41.75 lakh was reported.

• In Porbandar, a Rs. 19.80 lakh visa scam was uncovered.

• In March 2025, another case in

Ahmedabad involved an agent who committed a Rs. 1.23 crore fraud

• Recently in Vadodara, a case of Rs. 5.61 lakh visa fraud by an agent was registered.

Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Mehsana See Most Visa Fraud Cases

Besides these major cases, there are countless smaller cases where the police stepped in but settlements were reached between the parties. If such minor cases are included, the number

Indian-Origin Man Gets 6 Years Jail In $2 Million Call Centre Fraud In US

New York:

An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to over six years in prison for his involvement in a nearly $2 million scheme to defraud senior citizens by using call centres abroad. Giving him the 75-month sentence on Wednesday, Federal Judge William Jung also ordered Pranav Patel to forfeit $1.79 million that was collected from seniors in Florida and elsewhere.

According to court documents, Patel worked as a "money mule" -- collecting money or gold from victims -- and was convicted of money laundering, which he admitted to, in December.

"Preying on vulnerable, unsuspecting elderly victims to rob them of their hard-earned money is despicable," Secret Service Special Agent Robert Engel said after the sentencing in the federal court in Tampa, Florida.

"Even worse, the defendant's coconspirators posed as government agents to defraud victims of nearly $2 million, threatening them with arrest if they didn't follow their demands," he said.

Patel was busted when he went to a house to collect what he thought was a box of gold.

Law enforcement officials, who had him under surveillance, arrested him immediately after he picked up the package.

call centres abroad fraudulently identified themselves as officers from the Treasury Department or other agencies and told the victims that

there were "warrants for their arrest". They were told that they had to pay them to avoid arrest, the documents said.

Sometimes, they also told victims that they had to give their money and gold to the "officers" for safekeeping, according to the documents. Patel, 33, who lived in New Jersey, drove down to Florida and elsewhere on the East Coast to collect money and gold from seniors who had been threatened by people from the call centres. One of his victims told the court that because of the scam, he could not pay his mortgage and had to sell his house.

of frauds would be much higher. Fraudulent agents exploiting the desire of people to go abroad by any means have been dealt with legally. A noticeable trend across all cases is that most of the visa fraud incidents have occurred in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Mehsana.

Expert Opinion

A well-known visa consultant from Ahmedabad stated that a section of society is eager to go abroad at any cost—even without any formal education. Fraudulent agents take advantage of this mindset. With the U.S. and Canadian governments tightening their visa policies, such fraud cases are on the rise and are likely to increase further in the future.

3 Indian-Origin Women Removed from US Flight After Dispute

Three women, believed to be of Indian origin, were removed from a Spirit Airlines flight in the US after a heated argument with a flight attendant. A video of the incident, initially shared on TikTok, has gone viral on social media platforms. The video shows three women seated in a row, arguing with a flight attendant who stood in the aisle.

The woman appeared agitated, accusing the crew member of not knowing the flight's destination.

In the video, one of the women was heard saying, "You don't know where the flight is going. First of all, you don't know…", after the attendant incorrectly stated the flight's destination as New Orleans instead of New York.

The flight attendant acknowledged her mistake, apologising and saying it was her error. She then asked the women to stow their baggage under the seat in front of them, but they either didn't hear or ignored her, instead bringing up the New Orleans mix-up again. The flight attendant appeared to lose her patience, warning the women that they would be removed from the plane. "Okay, you know, just for that, I'm going to make sure you guys get off. This is easy for me. Watch," she said before walking away.

Australia XI vs South Africa: Cummins' Side Makes Bold Opener Call

Australia have revealed their playing XI on the eve of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa, scheduled to be played from Wednesday at Lord's. Skipper Pat Cummins has picked Marnus Labuschagne to open the innings alongside Usman Khawaja, hoping the 30-year-old can be a long-term solution to the spot that has seen quite a few batters to replace David Warner. Labuschagne, who has never opened in Test cricket, has just one Test century to his name since the end of 2022 and failed to make an impression in two matches for County side Glamorgan earlier this month. After much debate, seamer Josh Hazlewood won the race against Scott Boland to partner left-armer Mitchell Starc and Cummins in the pace attack. Hazlewood hasn't played a red-ball contest since he featured in the third

Anderson Honoured as India-England Series Named After Him

Former right-arm seamer James Anderson said that it was a "huge honour" that the Test series between India and England has been named after him and India's legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar. Cricketing legends Tendulkar and Anderson will now have a special place in the IndiaEngland Test rivalry, as the two boards, BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board), have decided to name the Test series between the two countries on them (AndersonTendulkar Trophy).

Anderson told ESPNcricinfo, "It's a huge honour. I still can't quite believe it. Sachin is someone I looked up to when I was growing up, though I don't want to do him a disservice with his age. I remember watching him, an absolute legend of the game, and I played against him a lot as well. So to have this trophy is a huge honour for me, and I couldn't be more proud."

Test against India in December, with Boland edging his way into Australia's line-up for the remainder of that series and impressing with a 10-wicket match haul in the series finale in

Sydney. Meanwhile, Hazlewood won the IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru last week and only arrived in London on the night of June 4. All-rounder Beau Webster also found

Nicholas Pooran Drops Bomb, Quits All Forms Of International Cricket

Arguably the finest T20 batter in the game at present, West Indies wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran dropped a bomb on Monday night as he decided to quit international cricket, from all three forms. Pooran's decision comes in just days after South Africa wicket-keeper batter Heinrich Klaasen, another great of the game in the shortest format, quit

international cricket too. While Pooran intends to continue playing franchise cricket, the decision does make the purists question the future of the sport on the international spectrum. He further added: "This game we love has given and will continue to give so much - joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies. Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field... it's hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart." Taking to Instagram about his decision, Pooran said: "After much thought and reflection, I've decided to announce my retirement from international Cricket."

Australia have revealed their playing XI on the eve of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa

a place in the playing XI alongside Cameron Green, who will be playing his first Test since October 2024. Green had suffered a stress fracture in his back and chose to undergo surgery in October. Now playing as a specialist batter, Green is entering the upcoming WTC final on the back of three centuries during his County stint with Gloucestershire. Australia Playing XI: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.

Gambhir Tells England Curator, "We Want..."

Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasised the need for a balanced pitch for their upcoming England tour. The team is training at Beckenham, adjusting to conditions that support seamers while preparing for a new era without Kohli and Rohit.

Josh Marden, the head curator at Beckenham County Ground, revealed that India head coach Gautam Gambhir and the management had a clear message regarding their preparations for the highly anticipated England tour: "We want a good pitch", reported Revsportz. India has begun fine-tuning its preparations for the five gripping Tests in England, which are slated to begin on June 20 at Headingley. The tourists have hosted a training camp at the South East London venue in Beckenham as they solidify their preparations for the first bilateral Test series without its batting bigwigs Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, marking the beginning of a new era.

The man could be heard shouting, “Main pagal nahi hoon, yeh mujhe pagal sabit kar rahe hain” (I’m not mad, they are trying to prove I am).

Jain believes the man may have been denied entry at immigration due to his

state of confusion. “He was probably just stressed, not mentally unstable. His dignity should’ve been preserved,” he said.

China Expert Warns of New Threat After US Fungus Smuggling Case

New Delhi: A top U.S. expert on China, Gordon G. Chang, has warned that America could face a threat

“worse than Covid” following the arrest of two Chinese scientists accused of smuggling a toxic fungus into the U.S. Yunqing Jian and her partner Zunyong Liu were charged with attempting to smuggle Fusarium graminearum, a fungus considered a potential agroterrorism weapon, capable of devastating wheat, barley, maize, and rice. The U.S. Justice Department says it causes billions in crop damage and poses health risks to humans and animals.

Sever Ties With China to Stop Bio-Threats, Warns US China Expert

Chang told Fox News the act was tantamount to warfare and urged Washington to cut ties with Beijing. “This is an attack. Xi Jinping constantly talks of war. The only way to stop this is to sever relations with China,” he said, warning of future threats beyond Covid or fentanyl. He cited past suspicious incidents, including unsolicited seed deliveries from China in 2020 and again in 2024 by online retailer Temu. Chang emphasized the U.S. must act decisively to defend itself against increasingly aggressive actions.

Chang is the author of China Is Going to War and has spent nearly two decades working in China and Hong Kong.

Trump Warns Musk of 'Serious Consequences'

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a sharp warning to Elon Musk, saying there would be “serious consequences” if the billionaire funds Democrats opposing his tax-cut and spending bill. In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump confirmed his relationship with Musk is likely over, stating, “I would assume so, yeah,” and showed no interest in mending ties. Musk recently denounced Trump’s bill as a “disgusting abomination,” complicating Republican efforts to pass the measure, which narrowly cleared the House and now awaits a Senate vote. Analysts estimate the bill could add $2.4 trillion to the national debt over a decade. Trump, however, remains confident it will pass by the July 4 Independence Day deadline. Their feud escalated on social media, prompting Musk to delete some antiTrump posts, including one suggesting impeachment, in an apparent effort to de-escalate. Yet, Trump hinted at a possible review of Musk’s federal contracts, a move that could impact Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink, and X . Experts say Musk’s empire is heavily reliant on government contracts and subsidies, making him vulnerable if tensions persist. "All of Elon’s businesses are extremely dependent on government largesse," noted analyst Sam Abuelsamid. As the standoff continues, Musk risks losing billions and facing regulatory or political backlash.

Indian Student in US Duped of $5,000 by Fake Immigration Officers

An Indian student pursuing her Master’s at Indiana University Bloomington fell victim to an elaborate scam by individuals posing as U.S. immigration officials. Shreya Bedi, who arrived in the U.S. in 2022 on an F-1 visa, received a call on May 29 from someone claiming to be an ICE agent. The caller provided a name, badge number, and even directed her to verify his office details on the official ICE website.

The imposters told Bedi that she had violated immigration laws and must pay a $5,000 bond via gift cards to avoid arrest and deportation. A second call, allegedly from Olympia Police, warned her not to disconnect the call as her phone was being monitored. The scammers had extensive personal information

about her, including her hometown in India and academic background.

“I was kept on the phone for over three hours. They warned me not to hang up or talk to anyone. I was terrified,” Bedi said. She bought Apple and Target gift cards and shared the codes, expecting a police officer to collect them. No one ever showed up.

The scam has left her in financial distress while repaying student loans. "This has derailed my future plans," she said, urging other international students to be cautious. “No real government agency will ever ask for gift cards or sensitive information over the phone.”

The incident comes amid a rise in ICE impersonation scams, adding to fear within migrant communities.

Reports of fake ICE agents are rising amid a nationwide arrest surge, fueling fear and mistrust within migrant communities.

Trump-Musk Feud: Tesla Loses $380B

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Elon Musk’s recent dive into presidential politics has turned into a financial fiasco for Tesla. Once granted Oval Office access and golf-course diplomacy by Donald Trump, Musk now faces threats that his lucrative federal contracts and tax breaks could evaporate after a spectacular public split with the president.

Tesla’s share price, already sliding since Musk declared his political ambitions,

in 2025

collapsed after Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”—an energy package that slashes incentives for electric vehicles— cleared the House. The stock crashed 14 percent on Friday alone, erasing about $152 billion and cementing Tesla as 2025’s worst-performing large-cap.

Since January its market value has shrunk by $380 billion, down 29.3 percent to $917 billion, jeopardizing its place in the global top ten by capitalization. Investors had grown skittish as Trump championed fossil fuels—“drill baby, drill”—undermining EV demand, while Musk’s flirtations with far-right figures dented consumer sentiment. The feud turned personal when Musk, once a major campaign donor, blasted Trump on X, accusing him of “ingratitude” and even calling for impeachment in favor of Vice-President JD Vance.

US brings back El Salvador deportee to face charges

Kilmar Ábrego García, a 29-year-old from El Salvador mistakenly deported in March, has been returned to the US to face prosecution on two federal criminal charges.

He has been accused of participating in a trafficking conspiracy over several years to move undocumented migrants from Texas to other parts of the country.

El Salvador agreed to release Mr Ábrego García after the US presented it with an arrest warrant, Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Friday. His lawyer called

the charges "preposterous".

The White House had been resisting a US Supreme Court order from April to "facilitate" his return after he was sent to a jail in El Salvador alongside more than 250 other deportees.

In a two-count grand jury indictment, filed in a Tennessee court last month and unsealed on Friday, Mr Ábrego García was charged with one count of conspiracy to transport aliens and a second count of unlawful transportation of undocumented aliens.

Bondi said the grand jury had found that Mr Ábrego García had played a "significant role" in an alien smuggling ring, bringing in thousands of illegal immigrants to the US.

The allegations, which date back to 2016, allege he transported undocumented individuals between Texas and Maryland and other states more than 100 times.

condemnation of the barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir and for your solidarity and support to India in the fight against terrorism,” Jaishankar said. “We practice a policy of zero tolerance against terrorism and expect our partners to understand it, and we will never countenance perpetrators of evil being put at par with its victims,” he added.

During the talks, India reportedly raised concerns about cross-border terrorism originating from Pakistan. The UK had previously engaged with both India and Pakistan last month, encouraging de-escalation during their military tensions.

India Wants Development, Not War: Tharoor on Pakistan

Washington, Jue 6 (IANS) India is not interested in war or conflicts but is focused on growth and development, and Pakistan wants to interrupt this through terrorism, was a message, conveyed by the Indian parliamentary delegation, led by Shashi Tharoor, during its visits to countries in the Americas.

This message of development resonated with leaders of all the countries the team visited, with the discussions on

terrorism moving on to economic growth and cooperation, he said at a meeting with representatives of think tanks.

“There is this tremendous sense of interest in India, faith that India is heading in the right direction, and appreciation for the fact that even on this terrorism issue, we behave with restraint and responsibility”, Tharoor said. “So, I think you will find that on the whole, we're on the right track here”. At the same time, he delivered the incontrovertible message that if Pakistan were to hit India through terrorism hoping to interrupt its development agenda, “They will be hit back. We will hit back very hard.”

He added, “And the fact is that this nuclear bogey being waved around by the Pakistanis makes absolutely no sense because even what happened in Operation Sindoor stopped a long way short of anything approaching or will be considered nuclear”.

Age is not a barrier for actors anymore

Actor Aamir Khan is gearing up for his much-anticipated return to the big screen with Sitaare Zameen Par, and while the buzz around the film has been building steadily, one topic that has caught public attention is the 23-year age difference between Aamir and his co-star Genelia Deshmukh.

“And ab Imran bhi kafi meri age ka ho gaya hai,” he joked, lightening the mood.

For context, 17 years ago, Genelia played the bubbly and beloved college sweetheart of Imran Khan in his debut film. Fast forward to now, she’s all set to portray Aamir Khan’s wife in Sitaare Zameen Par. While Aamir is

"Definition Of Dumb" Anurag Kashyap Calls Netflix CEO

Anurag Kashyap's "Saas Bahu" reference was aimed at the recently announced collaboration between Netflix India and Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, co-director of Netflix India's groundbreaking series Sacred Games (2018), has expressed sharp disappointment with Netflix’s current direction in India, reacting strongly to comments made by Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos.

Sarandos recently reflected on Netflix’s India entry during a podcast, suggesting that launching with Sacred Games may not have been the ideal approach. He hinted that a more populist show might have yielded quicker success, saying, “If

I did it all over again, would I have done Sacred Games a couple of years later, and did things that were more populist instead? Maybe.”

Responding to this, Kashyap posted a screenshot of the headline on Instagram and sarcastically wrote, “He should have started with Saas Bahu... he would have done well. Which he is doing now. I always knew the tech guys are dumb when it comes to storytelling but @ tedsarandos is the definition of dumb is what I didn’t know. Good to discover that. This explains everything now.” His reference to “Saas Bahu” was a jab at Netflix’s recent collaboration with Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms, known for its iconic Hindi soap operas like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

Actor Lisa Mishra, who recently starred in Netflix India’s The Royals, also weighed in on Kashyap’s post, noting, “Everything in OTT is derivative now anyways, and specifically derivative of Sacred Games.” Earlier in March, Kashyap had criticized Netflix India as a “totally opposite s*** show” in comparison to international offerings, further highlighting his dissatisfaction with the platform’s shift away from bold, original content.

Kashyap’s critique underscores a broader debate about the balance between artistic storytelling and commercial appeal in India’s booming streaming market, as Netflix navigates content strategies amid rising competition and diverse audience tastes.

Released on over 5,000 screens worldwide, Housefull 5 is seeing high demand with multiplexes running up to 20 shows daily.

Despite a hefty budget of Rs 225 crore, distributors estimate the film needs to earn around Rs 450 crore to break even. Compared to Akshay’s recent releases like Kesari 2 and Khel Khel Mein, which had modest openings, early predictions suggest Housefull 5 may outperform them. The film is available in two versions, though it has not been dubbed in multiple languages.

Indian-American OB-GYN from Hoffman Estates Sentenced in $1.5 Million Health Care Fraud

Our community has worked tirelessly for decades to build credibility and integrity, especially in healthcare. Incidents like these cast a shadow on all of us.” : A local Indian-American professional

Dr Mona Ghosh’s conviction has sent shockwaves through the Indian-American community, particularly in the greater Chicago area, where Indian professionals have long held a reputation for diligence, education, and public trust. As one of the fastest-growing and most educated immigrant groups in the U.S., Indian-Americans have built strong careers in fields such as medicine, law, and technology. Now, many fear that such high-profile cases could tarnish that legacy.

The Indian-American community in suburban Chicago is concerned after a local physician was sentenced to ten years in federal prison for orchestrating a widespread healthcare fraud scheme that endangered patient safety and siphoned millions from taxpayer-funded insurance programs.

Dr. Mona Ghosh, 52, an OB-GYN and owner of Progressive Women’s Healthcare in Hoffman Estates, was sentenced on Monday for billing Medicaid, TRICARE, and several private insurers for medically unnecessary or nonexistent procedures over a fouryear period. In some instances, procedures were performed without patients’ knowledge or consent. Dr. Ghosh pleaded guilty last year to two counts of health care fraud. Alongside her prison sentence, she has been ordered to pay approximately $1.5 million in restitution.

“This is incredibly disheartening,” said a local Indian-American professional who requested anonymity. “Our community has worked tirelessly for

decades to build credibility and integrity, especially in healthcare. Incidents like these cast a shadow on all of us.”

According to federal authorities, Ghosh submitted fraudulent claims for ultrasounds, vaccinations,

blood tests, and invasive gynecological procedures like endometrial ablations and biopsies—often overstating the complexity and duration of patient visits to extract higher reimbursements. Investigators also found that she altered patient records to support her claims.

In a scathing rebuke, U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros emphasized the gravity of Ghosh’s actions.

“Dr. Ghosh’s fraud scheme was particularly egregious because she endangered the health of her patients by performing unnecessary medical procedures, including those that severely limited some patients' ability to have children in the future,” Boutros said in a statement.

Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Defense, and Illinois Attorney General’s office, were involved in the investigation. For many Indian-Americans in the medical field, the case underscores a need to redouble efforts around ethical conduct and patient trust.

Ghosh’s license has been suspended, and her medical practice has closed. Victims, many of whom trusted Ghosh implicitly, are still processing the emotional and physical toll of the experience.

The Indian-American community, which takes pride in its contributions to the U.S. healthcare system, is now grappling with a painful reminder that trust, once broken, can take years to rebuild.

Is 2025 the year of multi-million dollar healthcare fraud involving Indians?

We are barely half-way through the year and there have already been many cases involving Indian-American physicians or healthcare professionals across America involved in fraudulent activities. Here are some of the recent cases.

Seattle: Indian Involved in $8.7 Million Medicare Fraud Case

Indian national, Mohammed Asif, appeared in U.S. District Court in Seattle today, charged with health care fraud and conspiracy in connection with a bogus diagnostic testing lab that billed Medicare nearly $9 million. Asif, the alleged owner and director of American Labworks LLC in Everett, Washington, was arrested at Chicago O’Hare Airport on April 10 while attempting to board an international flight. According to prosecutors, the lab billed Medicare for COVID-19 and respiratory tests that were never ordered or performed.

From April to December 2024, Medicare paid the lab over $1.1 million. Investigators say more than 200 complaints flagged suspicious billing, including charges for tests on deceased patients and referrals by physicians who were either unaware or deceased themselves.

Financial records show Asif withdrew $260,000 in May 2024 before returning to India. He came back to the U.S. in March 2025 as the investigation ramped up. Federal agents arrested him shortly after. The charges remain allegations until proven in court.

Pennsylvania: Indian-Origin Doctor Convicted in $2.3 Million Opioid Prescription Fraud

News emerged in April, this year that Dr. Neil K. Anand, a physician from Pennsylvania, was convicted in a $2.3 million healthcare fraud scheme involving the illegal distribution of opioid painkillers. He now faces a maximum sentence of 130 years in prison.

Authorities say Anand dispensed over 20,000 oxycodone tablets which is an addictive controlled substance by pressuring patients to accept unnecessary “goody bags” in exchange for prescriptions. He also signed blank prescription pads, allowing unlicensed interns to write drug prescriptions under his name. Anand submitted fraudulent claims to Medicare and private insurers including the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), Independence Blue Cross,

and Anthem. He ran the scheme through his in-house pharmacies, where the bogus “goody bags” were distributed.

The cost of these bags, totaling over $2.3 million, was billed to government and private insurance programs. According to the CDC, more than 80,000 opioidrelated overdose deaths occurred in the U.S. in 2022 alone.

New Jersey: Doctor Convicted in $5.4 Million Medicare Fraud Scheme

Dr. Adarsh Gupta of Sewell was found guilty by a federal jury of health care fraud and making false statements after prescribing braces to thousands of Medicare beneficiaries without proper medical evaluation. Prosecutors said Gupta worked with telemarketers who persuaded seniors to accept the braces. He would then prescribe multiple braces, including for an undercover agent, after speaking with patients for less than a minute. Authorities said Gupta falsely certified that the braces were medically necessary, enabling brace supply companies to submit over $5.4 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare. He was convicted on three counts of health care fraud and two counts of making false statements related to health care. Gupta faces up to 10 years in prison per fraud count and five years per false statement count when sentenced on October

California: Indian-origin Psychiatrist & CEO in $149 Million Insurance Fraud Scheme

Tonmoy Sharma, former CEO of Sovereign Health Group, was arrested for allegedly masterminding a $149 million insurance fraud operation involving fake urinalysis claims and illegal kickbacks.

Sharma was taken into custody at LAX following an eight-count federal indictment. Prosecutors allege Sharma orchestrated a scheme from 2014 to 2020 that involved enrolling patients into Sovereign facilities under false pretenses, submitting bogus insurance claims, and paying over $21 million in illegal kickbacks to patient brokers.

The FBI and other federal and state agencies are leading the investigation. Both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Tara Haaz, Interim Head of Marketing and Revenue, Color Factory took out time from her busy schedule to talk to Hi India on what makes Color Factory the space for all seasons and yes reasons!

Hi India: For those new to Color Factory, how would you describe the experience in just a few words? What sets it apart from other interactive museums or family attractions in Chicago?

Tara Haaz: Color Factory is a vibrant, thoughtfully designed experience meant to spark joy, connection, creativity, and curiosity for all ages. What sets us apart is our deep focus on sensory storytelling, our collaborations with artists, and the

seamless blending of art, interaction, and fun. It’s not just about seeing—it's about bringing color to life through all five of your senses, color interpreted in ways you’ve never experienced before.

Hi India: Color Factory is known for immersive, multisensory experiences -- can you tell us a bit about the creative process behind designing these installations?

Tara Haaz: We work with a diverse team of artists, designers, and curators—many of them local—to build environments that evoke emotion, curiosity, and connection. Each installation is grounded in a specific color palette and narrative concept, often inspired by their own personal stories or culture. The goal is to create an experience that’s not only beautiful, but deeply memorable.

Hi India: How does the Chicago location reflect the spirit of the city in its exhibits? Are there local collaborations or Chicagospecific touches families should look out for?

Tara Haaz: We’ve partnered with many local artists, students, musicians, and various food makers to bring Color Factory Chicago to life. They’ve all helped us infuse the space with a voice that is authentically Chicago. For example, you’ll hear the voice of the CTA, toss confetti in a room dedicated to the Chicago Flag, and take a metaphorical walk (or slide!) through the city’s storied history with the color green in our signature ball pit...just to name a few. Even our treats and take- home keepsakes have a local flair to them.

Hi India: Color Factory is highly photofriendly and interactive. How do you balance creating Instagrammable moments with ensuring guests are truly engaged and present?

Tara Haaz: That balance is incredibly important to us. While we certainly embrace the social media friendliness of our space, each room is crafted to encourage interaction and connection— whether it’s playing, exploring, or reflecting. We encourage guests to put their phones away and truly immerse themselves in our spaces and feel the joy of color. We’ve even built in our own inhouse photo booths throughout to ensure guests can still capture those memories without distraction.

Judge Warns Diddy Over Jury Tampering

NEW YORK, NY — U.S. District

Judge Arun Subramanian issued a sharp warning to Sean “Diddy” Combs during his federal sex-trafficking and racketeering trial in Manhattan, accusing the music mogul of attempting to sway the jury. The judge called out Combs for “nodding vigorously” and making eye contact with jurors during the cross-examination of witness Bryana “Bana” Bongolan, labeling the behavior “absolutely unacceptable.”

“If it happens again, I will instruct the jury or remove your client from the courtroom,” Subramanian told Combs’s legal team.

Defense attorney Nicole Westmoreland led the questioning in an increasingly tense trial. Separately, Combs drew attention by joking with a courtroom sketch artist, asking her to “soften” his image and claiming she made him “look like a koala bear.”

tailer’s Oak Tree Road location in Iselin was hit in a similarly audacious armed robbery. In that case, masked assailants held employees at gunpoint and escaped with approximately $1 million in gold jewelry. Federal investigators

later connected the 2022 robbery to a sophisticated D.C.-based crime ring that spe-cifically targeted Asian American-owned jewelry businesses along the East Coast. At this time, it is unclear whether today’s robbery is connected to the earlier incident or if it was an isolat-ed crime. Police have not released any information regarding possible injuries to store staff or customers during the robbery. This remains a developing story. The Woodbridge Police Department is urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward. If you witnessed the robbery or have any details that may assist investigators, please contact the Wood-bridge Police Department immediately.

Pakistani National Convicted for Smuggling Iranian Weapons to Houthis, Witness Threats

HiIndia

WASHINGTON, DC- A federal jury has convicted Pakistani national Muhammad Pahlawan, 49, on multiple charges related to smuggling Iranian-made advanced conventional weapons intended for Yemen’s Houthi rebels and threatening witnesses.

According to court records, on Jan. 11, 2024, U.S. Navy forces from the USS Lewis B. Puller, including Navy SEALs and Coast Guard Maritime Security Response Team East personnel, boarded an unflagged dhow in the Arabian Sea near Somalia. Onboard were 14 crew members, including Pahlawan, the vessel’s captain. A search uncovered Iranianmade weaponry, including ballistic missile components, anti-ship cruise missile components, and a warhead — consistent with those used by Houthi forces against merchant and U.S. military ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden following the October 7 Hamas attack in Israel.

During the operation, Pahlawan lied to U.S. forces, ordered crewmembers to do the same, and threatened their lives and families.

Evidence at trial showed that

Indian-American candidates win runoff races in Texas’ city councils

Houston: Two Indian-American candidates have won their respective city council runoff elections in Texas. According to unofficial results from Fort Bend County, Singhal received 2,346 votes against Hussain’s 777.

Sukh Kaur, a Sikh-American and education reformer, scored a landslide victory in San Antonio to retain her District 1 council seat. Kaur, a nonprofit leader who lives in San Antonio with her husband and two children, defeated challenger Patty Gibbons with 65 per cent of the votes. “This victory belongs to the residents of District 2,” Singhal told supporters.

“I am deeply grateful for the community’s support and ready to serve with transparency and dedication,” said Singhal, who campaigned on transparent governance, infrastructure improvements, and community engagement. Kaur, the first Sikh woman elected to the San

US Embassy Offers $1000 to Undocumented Indians to Leave

WASHINGTON, DC – The US Embassy in India has issued a fresh advisory urging undocumented immigrants in the United States to voluntarily depart the country, offering financial and logistical support as part of the process.

The embassy described the move as a “historic opportunity” for those residing illegally in the U.S. to exit safely and avoid arrest. Through the CBP Home App—an initiative launched during the Trump administration—eligible individuals can apply for self-deportation assistance.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) emphasized that self-deportation is “the best, safest, and most cost-effective way to avoid arrest,” citing that it can reduce taxpayer costs by up to 70% and lessen risks for law enforcement.

Qualified individuals may receive:

• Financial help with travel expenses

• Assistance with travel documentation

• Departure planning within 21 days of approval

Additional benefits include:

• Extended departure deadlines for those funding their own travel

• Improved chances for future U.S. immigration

• Lower priority for arrest and removal by ICE

Eligibility criteria include:

• Non-criminal undocumented individuals encountered by CBP

• Parolees whose legal stay has ended or is expiring

• Applicants must be physically present in the U.S. during registration

The embassy also warned visa overstayers—those who entered legally but remained past their permitted time—that they risk arrest, deportation, heavy fines, and potential permanent bans from reentry. This move is seen as part of a broader immigration enforcement strategy encouraging voluntary compliance.

At Pappas’s request, the Illinois General Assembly passed legislation last week allowing her to delay the tax sale—originally scheduled for August—until March 2026. The bill also ensures that no additional interest will accrue on delinquent bills during the postponement.

“I commend the General Assembly for granting flexibility to delay the sale and protect property owners from increased interest,” Pappas said. “This delay gives

The Annual Tax Sale, mandated by state law, allows tax buyers to pay off delinquent property taxes in ex-change for a lien. If the property owner fails to repay the debt with interest, the buyer may claim the property.

The postponement follows a 2023 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that raised concerns about tax collection practices in Illinois and other states.

ISIS Plotter Found Guilty: Michigan Man Built Destructive Device

WESTLAND, MI- A Michigan man, Aws Mohammed Naser, 37, was convicted by a federal jury for attempt-ing to provide material support to ISIS and for being a felon in possession of a destructive device. The ver-dict follows a five-week trial and six hours of jury deliberation. Naser, formerly of Westland, Michigan, was found guilty of trying to join and support ISIS, including offer-ing himself as personnel and attempting to aid the group while aware of its terrorist designation. Addition-ally, he was convicted of possessing an explosive device despite a prior felony conviction. According to prosecutors, Naser first tried to travel overseas to join ISIS but was repeatedly denied board-ing flights, including one incident in 2013 when he robbed a gas station and attempted to flee the country with stolen money. He was arrested and served three years in prison for the robbery.

After his release, Naser shifted focus to supporting ISIS domestically. He

used anonymous online platforms to access ISIS propaganda, joined extremist chatrooms, and experimented

New Jersey Passes Laws on Safety, Workplace Transparency

NEW JERSEY- New Jersey has enacted two significant laws aimed at curbing public disorder and improving workplace fairness.

The first law increases penalties for public fighting, following a surge in violent incidents, including nearly 90 arrests over Memorial Day weekend in Seaside Heights. Multiple stabbings and fights shut down the boardwalk, sparking criticism of Governor Phil Murphy and Attorney General Matthew Platkin. The Aber-deen Police Benevolent Association blamed lenient policies for emboldening lawbreakers and compromis-ing public safety. In response, the newly signed law makes inciting a public brawl a fourth-degree crime, punishable by up to 18 months in prison and a $10,000 fine. The law took effect immediately.

Seaside Heights already enforces a curfew for minors under 18 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., unless accompa-nied by a parent or guardian. Calls for stricter enforcement grew louder after 20

juveniles were arrested during last year’s Gloucester Township Day.

The second law, the New Jersey Pay and Benefit Transparency Act (NJPBTA), also took effect this week. It mandates that employers with 10 or more workers disclose pay ranges, benefits, and other compensation details in job postings. Employers must also notify current employees of promotional opportunities.

“This legislation is about ensuring fairness in the workplace,” said Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (D-Union), a prime sponsor. “A4151 will help level the playing field and protect workers from favoritism.”

New Jersey now joins 14 states and Washington, D.C., in requiring pay transparency. There is currently no federal equivalent.

According to the state Department of Labor & Workforce Development, job postings must include a mini-mum and maximum salary range, and employers must make “reasonable efforts” to inform employees about advancement opportunities.

with building explosives and flying drones. In 2017, the FBI recovered a ready-to-assemble bomb from his home.

Mohammed Naser, 37 now face up to 35 years in prison

Officials described Naser as a selfdeclared “son of the Islamic State” who posed a persistent threat to U.S. security. Evidence also revealed he was radicalized through online content and had a long-standing con-nection with Russell Dennison, a U.S. citizen who joined a precursor to ISIS and was later killed in Syria. Naser now faces up to 35 years in prison—20 years for attempting to support a terrorist organization and 15 years for unlawful possession of a destructive device. His sentencing will be determined by a federal judge.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force led the investigation. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Michigan and the Justice Department’s National Security Division.

Rutgers Student Uses Crown to Champion Education Equity

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ

— Asmi Kaushal, a 19-yearold sophomore at Rutgers University, is heading to the national stage. Recently crowned Miss New Jersey International 2025, she will represent the state at the Miss International pageant in Tennessee this July. But for Kaushal, the crown is more than a title—it's a platform to promote educational equity, a cause rooted in her own experience.

Born in India and raised in New Jersey since age six, Kaushal is the first in her family to attend college in the U.S. She understands the challenges immigrant and first-generation students face navigating an unfamiliar school system.

“When your parents didn’t go to school here, it’s easy to feel lost in the process,” she said. “There’s so much more to succeeding in high school and college than just grades.”

A mechanical engineering major with a math minor at Rutgers–New Brunswick, Kaushal is using her visibil-ity to educate students and families about the hidden keys to academic success—AP courses, internships, and extracurriculars.

“Many immigrant families don’t even know these opportunities exist,” she said.

“I want to change that.”

She’s already leading free workshops—

online and at her former high school— focused on academic plan-ning, summer programs, and volunteering. Her next initiative: launching a peer mentorship program to connect high schoolers with college students in similar career paths. Though once interested in law, Kaushal’s passion for physics and robotics led her to engineering. Now, she’s even considering a concentration in aerospace. On campus, she’s active in the Society of Women En-gineers, helping inspire more girls to pursue STEM.

“I’m proud to be where I am,” she said. “And I want other students like me to know they can get here too.”

Indian-Origin Grad Fakes Tech Startup, Dupes VCs

BERKELEY, CA – UC Berkeley Grad Exposes Startup Ecosystem Flaws with Fabricated Founder Persona

Bhavye Khetan, a UC Berkeley graduate, is facing widespread criticism after revealing he misled 27 venture capitalists by posing as a fake startup founder—without a real product, pitch, or business plan.

Khetan crafted a fictional profile, claiming elite credentials like "Stanford CS," experience at "Palantir," and frequently invoking the term "AI."

Through a series of cold emails to 34 investors, he received 27 responses and landed four calls—all based on a fabricated background. “This game is rigged in ways most people don’t understand,” he wrote, highlighting how buzzwords and affiliations can open doors.

While some praised the move as a bold critique of biases favoring elite institutions, many condemned it as a serious breach of trust. “You lied. Stanford is meaningful. Palantir is meaningful. AI is meaningful. The only person acting inappropriately is you,” one commenter wrote.

Critics argued that Khetan’s stunt undermines a system built on trust, merit, and innovation. Others acknowledged that while strong credentials often grant access, misrepresenting oneself wastes time and damages the ecosystem. “If you lie, of course they’ll take your call—but you won’t get far once they find out,” another remarked.

For many, the incident served as a stark reminder: credibility may get you in the room, but integrity is what sustains real opportunity.

Hindu Council Pays Tribute to Pahalgam Victims

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – In response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 Hindu men, the United Hindu Council (UHC) has launched a public awareness campaign across the Bay Ar-ea. The initiative includes prominent billboards, with one displayed near the San Mateo Bridge beginning June 2.

The billboard carries a strong message:

“India stands for Humanity. Pakistan stands for Terrorism. Do not equate a terror-sponsoring state like Pa-kistan—which sheltered Osama Bin Laden—with India, the world’s largest and most diverse democracy.”

Another billboard challenges viewers with a provocative question:

“The victims in Pahalgam were killed because they were Hindus. So, does terrorism have a religion?” It is followed by checkbox options: “YES. NO.”

According to UHC, the goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about the religiously motivated target-ing of Hindus and to counter what the organization calls “false narratives.”

“The global silence on the persecution of Hindus in Kashmir is unacceptable,” said a UHC spokesperson.

Los Angeles Seniors Warned of New Distraction Scam

LOS ANGELES , CA. - It happened in minutes—and in broad daylight. Allison Kim says her 78-year-old moth-er was gardening outside her La Mirada home when a woman approached, distracting her with questions. Meanwhile, two other women slipped through a side gate and entered the house unnoticed.

“They were very good. Very organized,” Kim said. “They knew exactly where to go, what to take, how to hide it. They targeted the valuables—Louis Vuitton, Chanel, expensive jewelry, and cash. Around $50,000 worth, gone.”

Security footage shows one of the suspects concealing stolen items under her dress to appear pregnant.

“It was awful,” Kim added. “You just feel violated.”

The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department believes the crime is part of a growing trend of distraction scams targeting vulnerable seniors across Southern California.

“These groups typically show up between 11 a.m. and

3 p.m.,” a deputy said at a recent community meet-ing. “One distracts the victim at the front while others go around back.”

In response, LASD’s Industry Station is hosting community outreach events and sharing safety videos online. Their key safety tips include:

• Keep all doors and windows locked at all times

• Don’t open the door for strangers

• Use a doorbell camera for unknown visitors

• Never allow unfamiliar individuals inside

• Report suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately

Allison now urges the community to look out for elderly neighbors. “There are so many seniors living alone without anyone to check in on them,” she said. “What happened to my mom could happen to anyone.”

A GoFundMe page has been launched to support Allison and her mother.

California Senate Passes Bill to Establish First Public Law School in CSU System

SACRAMENTO, CA

– The California State Senate has passed SB 550, a bill introduced by Senator Dave Cor-tese (D-San José), that would authorize the creation of the first public law school within the California State University (CSU) system. If approved by the Assembly, the school would be established at San José State University.

The proposal aims to address longstanding issues of affordability and access in legal educa-tion—particularly for underrepresented and firstgeneration students. Despite being home to nearly two million residents, Santa Clara County currently lacks a public law school. Over 65% of the county’s popula-tion is Asian or Latino—demographics that remain underrepresented among California’s licensed attor-neys.

SB 550 outlines a potential partnership between San José State and Lincoln Law School of San José, a non-profit, state-accredited institution. The collaboration would form the CSU system’s first public law school and San José’s first-ever public legal education institution. Final approval would rest with the CSU Board of Trustees.

“Cost and geographic barriers continue to keep many talented individuals from entering the legal profes-sion,” said Senator Cortese. “This bill is about providing an affordable, community-based option to diversi-fy and strengthen California’s legal pipeline.”

The bill underscores the growing cost of legal education, with average student debt at private law schools surpassing $130,000. Nearly 67% of young attorneys report financial stress—often steering them away from public service and limiting diversity in the profession.

Assemblymember Ash Kalra to Spearhead California's Shift Toward Meat Alternatives

SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San José) has been appointed by Speaker Robert Rivas to lead the newly created Assembly Select Committee on Alternative Protein Innovation. The committee aims to reinforce California’s role as a leader in climate-friendly food systems by advancing the develop-ment of alternative proteins—such as plant-based, fermented, and cultivated meat products. Kalra emphasized the broader impact of the initiative, stating it’s about investing in sustainable solutions to feed a growing global population while addressing climate challenges. Supporters believe alternative pro-tein industries can cut food costs, create jobs, support farmers, and dramatically reduce the environmental footprint of traditional livestock agriculture. In 2022, Kalra championed $5 million in state funding for alternative protein research within the University of California system, supporting innovations now bolstered by federal and private backing. California already leads in this space, hosting major plant-based meat companies and startups developing cell-cultivated and fermentationbased foods. Advocates highlight the potential of these technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions—food systems contribute roughly one-third of global emissions— and limit the land, water, and pollution associated with conventional meat production.

Chicago Man Arrested for Armed Bank Heist with Pepper Spray

NORTHBROOK, Il. - A Highland Park man has been arrested and charged after allegedly robbing a North-brook bank on May 28, using pepper spray and a fire extinguisher to assault tellers and steal nearly $5,000. According to federal court documents, the suspect—identified as Emeril England—entered the Huntington Bank in the 1200 block of Meadow Road around 9:30 a.m., wearing dark clothing, a dreadlock wig, and carrying a black bag. Witnesses said he sprayed two bank tellers with pepper spray and then used a fire extinguisher, also pulled from his bag. One teller locked themselves in a nearby office while the other later discovered their cash drawer emptied—except for coins and two-dollar bills. In total, $4,915 was reported stolen. Security footage captured the suspect’s actions and appearance. Investigators later tracked a vehicle seen near the crime scene—a silver Toyota Avalon with visible damage—using surveillance from a nearby Metra train depot and license plate reader data. The car was registered to England. Authorities found the vehicle parked outside a residence on West Touhy Avenue in Chicago. A subsequent search recovered key evidence, including the dreadlock wig, pepper spray, a pellet gun, a hoodie matching the one in surveillance footage, and a bag of cash. England was taken into custody and, according to the complaint, admitted to planning the robbery, pur-chasing the disguise online, and executing the theft. He also stated he used the fire extinguisher after the pepper spray failed to have the desired effect. England faces federal charges in connection with the robbery.
