US Senate narrowly passes Trump’s ‘big, beautiful’ tax bill
A look at the key items in Trump's 'big, beautiful bill'
After hours of stalemate, Republicans in the US Senate have narrowly passed Donald Trump's mega-bill on tax and spending, meaning the proposed legislation has cleared one of its key hurdles.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed with Vice-President JD Vance casting a tie-breaking vote after more than 24 hours of debate.
It now heads back to the House, or lower chamber, where it still faces more opposition. An earlier version was cleared by House Republicans by a single-vote margin.
Trump had given the Republican-controlled Congress a deadline of 4 July to send him a final version of the bill to sign into law.
"The bill as amended is passed," Vance said on Tuesday afternoon, a moment that was met by applause among Senate Republicans, while Democrats sank into their seats and shook their heads in disapproval.
Disputes over the deficit, social programmes and spending levels had created
Senate Approval:
• Bill narrowly passed in the Senate with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote.
• Now moves to the House for final approval.
Tax Cuts:
• Makes Trump-era tax cuts permanent.
• Includes new tax deductions for seniors and partial tax exemption on tips and overtime (expiring 2028)
Medicaid Reforms:
• Imposes strict new work requirements (80 hours/month) for adults.
• Re-enrolment required every six months.
20 states sue Trump admin over Medicaid data release for deportations
The Trump administration violated federal privacy laws when it turned over Medicaid data on millions of enrollees to deportation officials last month, California Attorney General Rob Bonta alleged on Tuesday, saying he and 19 other states’ attorneys general have sued over the move.
Health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s advisers ordered the release of a dataset that includes the private health information of people living in California, Illinois, Washington state, and Washington, D.C., to the Department of Homeland Security last month, The Associated Press first reported last month. All of those states allow nonU.S. citizens to enroll in Medicaid programs that pay for their expenses using only state taxpayer dollars.
The unusual data sharing of private health information, including addresses, names, social security numbers, immigration status, and claims data for enrollees in those states, was released to deportation officials as they accelerated enforcement efforts across the country.
• Lowers provider tax rate and tightens eligibility.
• May cause loss of coverage for many.
SNAP (Food Benefits) Reforms:
• States must co-fund if error rates exceed 6%.
• Adds work requirements for ablebodied adults.

Child Tax Credit:
• Increased to $2,200 (lower than House version).
• Only one parent needs Social Security number.

• Raised from $10,000 to $40,000 for five years.
What’s next for the ‘big, beautiful’ bill?

• Returns to $10,000 afterward.
Clean Energy Tax Credits:
• Phased out slowly until 2028.
• Targets supply chains linked to “foreign entities of concern” like China.
Debt Ceiling:
• Raised by $5 trillion.
challenges for Republicans, stalling progress and prompting Trump to concede it would be "very hard" to meet his deadline for passing the bill. Despite efforts to galvanise the party, Senate Majority Leader John Thune lost three Republicans - Maine's Susan Collins, North Carolina's Thom Tillis and Kentucky's Rand Paul - in the narrow vote. Collins, Tillis and Paul joined all Democrats in voting against the bill.
• Higher than the $4 trillion in House version.
Opposition:
• House Republicans divided; some oppose rising deficits.
• Democrats slam cuts to Medicaid and SNAP as “reckless.”
Trump’s Push:
• Urges House GOP to unite and pass the bill before July 4 holiday.
Trump threatens to set Doge on Musk as pair feud again over budget plan
US President Donald Trump has suggested that Doge, the costcutting agency Elon Musk helped set up, could be used to hurt the billionaire's companies - as the former allies continue their public dispute over Trump's budget plans.
"Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far," he wrote on social media. "Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!"
The tech billionaire wrote in reply: "I am literally saying CUT IT ALL. Now."
Musk has repeatedly criticised Trump's so-called "big, beautiful bill", suggesting that it undermines the work he undertook to cut government spending. A row between Trump and Musk first blew up last month, with the pair trading barbs publicly before Musk backtracked on some of his attacks. Congress is currently voting on Trump's bill. The president's Republican Party holds majorities in both chambers, though some lawmakers in the party have voted against it - siding with opposition Democrats.
After days of negotiations, Republican leaders were finally able to secure the support of Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, who had been withholding her support over concerns of the impact of cuts to Medicaid in her state.
Zohran Mamdani Hits Back at Trump’s Arrest Threat
Washington: New York's Indian origin mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani refused to be "intimidated" by US President Donald Trump, after the Republican said his administration would have the Democrat arrested if he stops Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from doing its work in America's most populous city. Following his official confirmation as the Democratic candidate, Trump denounced Mamdani profusely, calling him a lunatic and a communist as he called for his arrest. The President also raised doubts over the legality of Mamdani's citizenship, who came to the US in 1998 when he was seven years old. Mamdani issued a statement on Tuesday following Trump's threats, saying he "will not accept this intimidation" by the President.
"The President of the United States just threatened to have me arrested, stripped of my citizenship, put in a detention camp and deported. Not because I have broken any law but because I will refuse to let ICE terrorise our city," Mamdani said.

Hindi cannot be forced now in Maharashtra: Uddhav Thackeray
Mumbai, (IANS) Shiv Sena(UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday said the Hindi language cannot be forced upon people now as the power of the Marathi people has compelled the state government to withdraw two of its resolutions on introducing Hindi along with Marathi and English for Classes 1 to 5.
Thackeray, who attended the Monsoon Session of the state legislature on its first day, said, “We will announce in two to three days what exactly the victory rally or victory march will be like and where on July 5 it will be held (as the joint morcha has been cancelled due to the government’s decision).
We are also talking to everyone about that. The Marathi traitors raise their heads as soon as they realise that we are a little scattered. Yesterday, we crushed this head. If we don't want them to come back, then we should maintain this unity instead of waiting for another crisis. We will not stop until
Trump Warns Zohran Mamdani to "Do Right Thing"
Washington: US President Donald Trump has threatened to cut federal funding for New York City if favoured mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani--a democratic socialist-- "doesn't behave himself", should he win the November 4 elections. Mamdani also took to the talk shows on Sunday, asserting he was not a "communist", as claimed by Trump.
he is going to have to do the right thing, but they're not getting any money. He's got to do right thing. It's shocking that I would have assumed that. I used to say we will never have a socialist in this country. No, but we'll have a communist. I mean, he's a communist, he's gonna be mayor of New York," Trump said during an interview with Fox News. Trump, who grew up in New York and built his sprawling real estate business there, said Mamdani's victory is "very bad" for the city. "Whoever's mayor of New York is going to have to behave themselves, or the federal government is coming down very tough on them financially," he added.
we create a vision of this unity on July 5. We will definitely celebrate the victory. Everyone forgot their party differences and came together with us during the movement. We need to show the same unity in the victory march.”
“Love for the mother language should be beyond the party, the government has made a lot of efforts. Still, I thank them. A new committee has been appointed under the chairmanship of Narendra Jadhav (former Planning Commission member). I am telling the government that this is a matter of education, and you have appointed a committee of an economist. Whatever the committee, the issue of compulsion is over now. Even if a committee is formed now, Hindi cannot be forced on us; the power of the Marathi people has shown this yesterday," said Thackeray at the press conference.

CBI nabs ‘kingpin’ of ‘Royal Tiger Gang’ fleecing Canadian, US citizens online
Cybercrime Gang Mastermind Nabbed in Mumbai-Ahmedabad Raids; $45K in Crypto Assets, Fake IDs Seized; Four-Day Remand Granted
HiIndia Newsdesk
Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Prince Jaswantlal Anand, the alleged mastermind of the notorious “Royal Tiger” cybercrime gang, from Mumbai.
During the raid, officials seized forged IDs of foreign enforcement agencies, digital infrastructure, and crypto assets worth $45,000.
The gang had been impersonating officials from U.S. and Canadian enforcement agencies to extort money from their citizens through threats.
The arrest followed multiple raids conducted by the CBI on Thursday in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Prince was presented before a CBI court, which granted a four-day remand for further investigation.
Authorities recovered various sophisticated cybercrime tools,
documents, and prepared scripts used to deceive foreign nationals. Items seized included fake IDs of Canadian police and other agencies, telecom devices, and voice-cloning tools powered by AI.
According to the CBI, Prince Anand had amassed significant wealth through cyber fraud. He lived a luxurious lifestyle, owned high-end cars, designer accessories, and frequently traveled abroad. Investigators suspect he acquired substantial unaccounted assets through these illegal activities.
The operation was part of “Operation Chakra V,” targeting international cyber fraud networks. The Royal Tiger gang impersonated officials from foreign governments, banks, or utility companies to scare victims. They used AI-based voice cloning and robocalls to contact U.S. and Canadian citizens, threatening legal consequences to extort large sums of money. The gang primarily used cryptocurrency to launder the funds and conceal the financial trail.
U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had earlier flagged the Royal Tiger gang under its Consumer Communications Information Services Threat (C-CIST) alert. A 2024 FCC notice revealed that the gang, including Prince Anand and key associate Kaushal Bhavsar, used illegal robocalls and AI voice technology to defraud American citizens and undermine trust in communication networks. CBI sources confirmed the gang has operatives not just in India but also across the U.S., U.K., and UAE.
Trump: I Saved Khamenei, Warns of More Strikes
U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday (June 27, 2025) scoffed at Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s heated warning to the U.S. not to launch future strikes on Iran, as well as the Iranian supreme leader’s assertion that Tehran “won the war” with Israel. Mr. Trump, in remarks to reporters and later in an extended statement on social media, said Khamenei’s comments defied reality after 12 days of Israeli strikes and the U.S. bombardment of three key nuclear sites inflicted severe damage on the country’s nuclear programme. The President suggested Mr. Khamenei’s comments were unbecoming of Iran’s most powerful political and religious figure.
“Look, you’re a man of great faith. A man who’s highly respected in his country. You have to tell the truth,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. Khamenei. “You got beat to hell.”

India, US may sign interim trade agreement this week: Report
New Delhi, July 1 (IANS)
India is on course to finalise an interim trade agreement with the US as early as this week to escape the tariff hike on its exports proposed by President Donald Trump, according to a report in the Financial Times.
India's negotiating team, led by Special Secretary Rajesh Agarwal, is engaged in high-level talks in Washington to conclude the bilateral trade agreement. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is expected to hold one-on-one talks with his US counterpart Marco Rubio on Tuesday or Wednesday on the sidelines of a meeting in Washington, the
report stated. The interim trade deal would be an initial step towards a comprehensive bilateral free trade agreement between Indian and the US. Indian and US negotiators are aiming to finalise an interim trade deal ahead of the July 9 deadline that has been fixed by US President Donald Trump for the 90day pause on new tariffs that were to be levied on Indian products.Negotiations are expected to continue after that for a bigger trade deal to be signed in September-October. The US is seeking broader market access for its agricultural and dairy products, but for India, this is a livelihood issue for the country's small farmers and hence is considered a sensitive area.
Musk May Launch 'America Party' if Trump Bill Passes
Elon Musk New Political Party: Musk has previously said that the tax-cut and spending bill would increase the national debt greatly and nullify the savings the federal government achieved through the works of DOGE.
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk renewed his criticism of US President Donald Trump’s coveted tax-cut and spending bill, which he calls “Big, Beautiful bill” and threatened to unseat the lawmakers who support the bill after campaigning on limiting government spending, and vowed to form a new political outfit “America Party” if the bill passes amid a marathon vote in the US Senate.
Following a feud with President Trump over the spending and tax break bill, Musk had chosen to be relatively silent but now, when the debate and marathon voting is underway in the Senate, Musk rejoined the debate against the Republicans backed bill, calling it “utterly insane and destructive” in a post on social media platform X.

Trump global aid cuts risk 14 million deaths in five years, report says
President Donald Trump's move to cut most of the US funding towards foreign humanitarian aid could cause more than 14 million additional deaths by 2030, according to research published in The Lancet medical journal. A third of those at risk of premature deaths were children, researchers projected.
Low- and middle-income countries were facing a shock "comparable in scale to a global pandemic or a major armed conflict," said Davide Rasella, who co-authored the report. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in March that over 80% of all programmes at the US Agency for International Development (USAID) had been cancelled. The Trump administration has taken aim at what it sees as wasteful spending. The controversial cutbacks - which were condemned
around the world by humanitarian organisations - were overseen by Elon Musk. The billionaire was then leading an initiative to shrink the federal workforce.
During his second term, Trump has repeatedly said he wants overseas spending to be closely aligned with his "America First" approach.
The USAID funding cuts "risk abruptly haltingand even reversing - two decades of progress in health among vulnerable populations," said the statement from Rasella, a researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health. In their report, Rasella and his fellow researchers estimated that USAID funding had prevented more than 90 million deaths in developing countries between 2001 and 2021. They modelled the potential impact on death rates with an assumption that funding would be cut by 83% – the figure provided by Rubio in March.

Bank of England to redesign banknotesand wants your help
Banknotes issued by the Bank of England are about to get their first major redesign in more than 50 years. Notable historical figures, such as Sir Winston Churchill on the current fiver, have featured on these banknotes since 1970 but could be on the way out.
The public are being asked for their views on new themes, such as nature, innovation, or key events in history. It raises the possibility of British birds, bridges, or bangers and mash featuring on the next series of £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes. The monarch has appeared on Bank of England notes since 1960. Images of historical characters, starting with William Shakespeare, were first seen on the reverse side a decade later. At times the choices have landed the Bank in hot water. The absence of any women, apart from Queen Elizabeth II, on notes in 2013 prompted a huge backlash. Now, the Bank is proposing that designs on the next series of notes could move on to a new theme. The public are being invited to give their views. They can also suggest their own themes, which may prompt plenty of jokes - Notey McNoteface will undoubtedly feature - and debate.
Trump threatens Japan with tariff up to 35% as deadline looms
US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a "30% or 35%" tariff on Japan if a deal between the two countries is not reached before a deadline next week.
That would be well above the 24% tariff Japan was hit with as part of Trump's so-called "Liberation Day" on 2 April, when he announced steep import duties on countries around the world.
The tariffs on most trading partners were later lowered to 10% for 90 days to give them time to negotiate deals with Washington.
That pause is due to expire on 9 July and Trump has said he is not thinking of extending the deadline. Trump also continued to cast doubt that an agreement could be reached with Tokyo.
"We've dealt with Japan. I'm not sure we're going to make a deal. I doubt it," he told reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday.
Japan's embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment.Like many other countries, most of Japan's exports to the US currently face a 10% levy. There is also a 25% import tax on Japanese vehicles and parts, while steel and aluminium are subject to a 50% tariff.
Nike pledges to cut reliance on Chinese factories
Nike says US President Donald Trump's tariffs on key trading partners could add around $1bn (£730m) to its costs this year.
Company executives also said the sportwear giant would cut its reliance on producing goods in China to ease the impact of US trade policies. Last month, Nike said it would raise prices on some trainers and clothing in the US from early June, weeks after rival Adidas warned it would have to hike the cost of goods due to tariffs.
Separately, both the US and China say they have agreed on how to implement a trade agreement they reached earlier this month.
It involves Beijing sending more rare earth metals to the US in return for the lifting of export restrictions. Shares in Nike jumped by more than 10% in extended trading after it forecast a smaller drop in first quarter revenue than many analysts had expected. The company's earnings for the last three months also topped estimates, despite being its worst quarterly figures for more than three years.
White House: Carney Caved to Trump on Tech Tax
The White House has said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney "caved" to pressure from President Donald Trump to rescind a tax on big US technology firms.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Canada had made a mistake in trying to levy the tax, and that Carney called Trump on Sunday evening to say he would drop it. Carney told reporters in Ottawa that the digital services tax had been dropped as "part of a bigger negotiation" and that Canada and the US had resumed trade negotiations on Monday. Labelling the tax a "blatant attack", Trump had called off trade talks on Friday and threatened to raise tariffs.
Canada then said it would halt collection of payments, which were due on Monday, and introduce legislation to scrap the tax. "It is something we expected, in the broader sense, that would be part of a broader deal," Carney told reporters on Monday afternoon.

Can Intermittent Fasting Keep Your Kidneys Healthy? Expert Reveals The Truth
Our kidneys, two bean-shaped powerhouses tucked on either side of the spine, do much more than just filter waste. These vital organs regulate blood pressure, maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, and produce key hormones like erythropoietin and vitamin D, which support everything from red blood cell production to bone health. However, conditions like diabetes and hypertension remain leading culprits behind kidney damage, making it essential to manage them through both medical treatment and lifestyle choices.
While much emphasis is placed on what we eat, when we eat is proving to be just as crucial. Enter intermittent fasting: a practice rooted in ancient traditions and now increasingly recommended by modern health experts. But how does this eating pattern affect kidney health? Let’s take a closer look.
What is Intermittent Fasting?
It has been widely believed that intermittent fasting can support kidney wellness. Read on to find out what experts have to say about this diet management plan.
Intermittent fasting is a type of diet management plan that cycles between periods of eating and fasting. In this approach, it is measured when you eat rather than what you eat. For instance, many follow the 16/8 method (eating within 8 hours and fasting for the next 16 hours), whereas some may also choose the 5:2 diet method (eating normally for five days and restricting calories for two days) or Time-Restricted Eating (TRE).
Intermittent Fasting And Its Impact On
Kidneys
Intermittent fasting, for normal individuals with healthy kidneys, is good for general overall metabolic health, which has been advocated and practised from time immemorial. Beyond weight loss, this diet management plan comes with a host of other benefits. It protects against chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, age-related degenerative diseases, kidney disease, and cancers.
Dr. G.K. Prakash, Consultant – Nephrology, Manipal Hospital Malleshwaram and Millers Road says that intermittent fasting improves blood sugar control by increasing insulin sensitivity, reducing weight, and increasing growth factors that boost metabolism in diabetics. It is beneficial for reducing blood pressure, cholesterol, and is good for even brain health, improving memory, gut health, kidney health, and overall longevity of an individual.
Dr Prakash says, “In a person with kidney ailment, it is important to differentiate between temporary dysfunction (acute kidney injury) and irreversible kidney injury (chronic kidney disease).
In the former entity, one has to judiciously choose fasting
practices, as it can be harmful in some cases."
For individuals with chronic kidney diseases, intermittent fasting is generally considered beneficial. However, there are various ways of intermittent fasting that have been advocated and practiced and the most common and easily understood method is Time-Restricted Eating.
What Is Time-Restricted Eating?
Time-restricted eating is in sync with the circadian rhythm, thus, it is considered more practical than the other ways. Dr Prakash mentions, “Under this diet plan, you need to extend the natural fasting time (which is usually the night hours during sleep) in the daytime as well, while reducing the eating window. For example, eating between 6-8 hrs or 10 hrs most and fasting for 16-18 hrs overnight is ideal. You can do so by finishing the evening meal by 6 pm and fasting till the next morning."
He adds, “Unlike the Western culture of eating small and frequent meals, longer overnight fasts, especially time-restricted eating, can support better weight control and may have added health benefits for chronic kidney disease patients."
What Are The Benefits of Time-Restricted Eating For Chronic Kidney Disease Patients?
Dr Shankar mentions that intermittent fasting reduces overweight and obesity, which are major risk factors for diabetes and hypertension. Since these two conditions account for nearly 65-75% of kidney failure cases, maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the incidence of CKD.
Intermittent fasting can also help improve cardiovascular health. It is particularly important for chronic kidney disease patients, as many of them invariably develop cardiovascular disease, which is another major cause of death in this population.
Dr Shankar suggests, “Monitor kidney function closely when you are practising intermittent fasting. Most importantly, stay hydrated during this fasting routine. In some individuals, it can worsen existing kidney issues, especially in acute kidney situations, and kidney stone disease." He notes that patients who are on diabetic medication should consult their doctors as there can be variations in their metabolic activity, including going into severe hypoglycemia (low sugar levels)."
As with any dietary change, it’s essential to personalise your approach to intermittent fasting, especially if you have existing kidney conditions. With the right medical guidance, this timetested practice could be a powerful tool in protecting your kidney health and improving overall longevity.
A New Generation of Leadership Aishwarya Balakrishna and the Changing Face of Naperville Politics
In a milestone moment for suburban Chicago, Aishwarya Balakrishna—raised in Naperville—has emerged as one of three Indian Americans to win in the 2025 local elections, signaling a powerful shift toward greater diversity and civic participation across Illinois communities.
Alongside Supna Jain, elected to the Indian Prairie School District 204 Board of Education, and Ashfaq Syed, who secured a seat on the Naperville City Council, Balakrishna’s victory for the Naperville Park District Board of Commissioners underscores a growing wave of Indian American engagement in local public life.
At just 29, Balakrishna brings a deep-rooted connection to her hometown and a fresh perspective to public service. Her platform—centered on evidence-based, community-driven public health initiatives—reflects both her professional expertise and a new generation’s inclusive vision of governance. In this interview with Hi India, she reflects on her family’s immigrant journey, her formative years in Naperville, and her hopes for a more connected, healthier community.
Hi India: You’ve spoken fondly of your immigrant parents and your grandmother’s influence. Can you share more about your family’s journey to America and how their values shaped your path to public service? Are you now raising your own family in Naperville?
Aishwarya Balakrishna: My parents and extended family have been a huge influence. They came to the U.S. in the ’80s and ’90s and faced significant challenges—prejudice, racism, and economic hardship—but they persevered. They saved and worked tirelessly so we could live in Naperville, where I had access to some of the best public schools. They taught me about hard work, leadership, and service. I grew up in a home where politics and civic
issues were discussed regularly. I’m so grateful for their sacrifices and proud to call Naperville my home. Two women who especially shaped me are my grandmother and great aunt. My grandmother always encouraged me to speak up and stand for what’s right. She told me it’s good to be a leader—and to use your voice for good. My great aunt was a true trailblazer: India’s first woman cardiologist, founder of a hospital and a healthcare advocate. Her dedication inspires me to serve others with the same passion.
Hi India: Growing up in Naperville as the daughter of Indian immigrants, what were some of the experiences or challenges that shaped your commitment to community health and inclusion?
Aishwarya: While Naperville is now very diverse, growing up here in the early days had its moments. Some experiences were unfriendly, and there weren’t many inclusive public spaces. Playing in the parks was one of the few areas where everyone mixed freely. That’s stayed with me.
Today, I want to ensure all residents feel safe and welcomed in public spaces. Parks are not just for physical activity—they’re essential to our mental and
emotional well-being.
Hi India: As a Neuqua Valley alum and lifelong resident, what are some memories of public parks or programs that influenced your decision to run?
Aishwarya: Some of my best memories are from playing outside with friends—creating games, exploring, and just being kids. Those joyful moments had a huge impact on me.
I want every resident to have access to that kind of carefree, fulfilling childhood. That’s one of the reasons I ran—to help shape a Park District that fosters joy, health, and community connection.
Hi India: Naperville has grown more multicultural in recent years. How did that environment influence your leadership style?
Aishwarya: I saw Naperville evolve as I grew up— more diverse neighborhoods, cultural celebrations, and businesses. But our leadership didn’t always
reflect that change.
Until recently, our boards and councils lacked diversity. It’s critical that leadership mirrors our population—different voices and perspectives make for better decision-making. I take that responsibility seriously. My leadership style is rooted in compassion, open-mindedness, and a deep respect for our residents.
Hi India: You’ve emphasized how parks support not just physical, but emotional well-being. What initiatives would you like to see implemented?
Aishwarya: We have amazing community partners already, but I’d love to expand collaborations— especially with groups focused on mental health and holistic wellness.
I envision programs that educate people about chronic disease prevention, coping strategies for stress, and opportunities to engage residents of all ages—from teens to seniors. After COVID, mental health issues spiked, and we need to respond creatively.
For me, activities like dance, music, and swimming have helped manage my own stress and anxiety. I want others to experience that same positive outlet through our parks.
Hi India: Finally, what legacy do you hope to leave, and how do you see the future for young Indian American women in civic leadership?
Aishwarya: I live by the idea: Leave it better than you found it. I hope that by the end of my term, our Park District is stronger, more inclusive, and more responsive to residents’ needs.
I want people to feel heard, respected, and truly cared for. That’s the kind of leader I aim to be.
And as for the future—I hope more young Indian American women feel empowered to run, speak up, and lead. We bring so much to the table. Our time is now.
Aishwarya Balakrishna is the newly elected Commissioner of the Naperville Park District in Illinois. At just 29, she’s the youngest-ever and first Indian American to hold this public office.

Supports Song Remakes
Iconic singer Usha Uthup, whose bold voice and vibrant personality have lit up Indian music since the 1970s, has expressed her strong support for the current trend of song remakes. Known for unforgettable hits like Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Ramba Ho Ho Ho, and One Two Cha Cha Cha, Uthup says she sees nothing wrong with remaking old classics, as long as they bring joy to audiences.
“You call it a remake, I call it retro,” she said. “What’s wrong with that? People still want to hear these songs. A song is a song is a song.”
Drawing comparisons with the classical music world, she added, “Every symphony orchestra still plays Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach. Their music is centuries old, yet it's performed again and again. Why should our music be any different?”
Uthup’s perspective comes at a time when remixes and remakes are hotly debated in the industry. While many purists frown upon them, Uthup believes they serve to keep good music alive for newer generations. For her, the essence of music lies not in its age, but in the emotion and
connection it creates. Shefali Jariwala Death Anti-Ageing Drugs May Have Caused Cardiac Arrest
Actor and model Shefali Jariwala passed away late Friday night, with her last rites held in Mumbai on Saturday evening in the presence of close family and friends. As the investigation into her untimely death progresses, sources suggest that her long-term use of anti-ageing medication may have contributed to a cardiac arrest.
According to police sources, Shefali had been undergoing monthly anti-ageing treatments, including injections, for the past seven to eight years on a doctor’s advice. On June 27, despite observing a fast for a puja at home, she reportedly took one such injection in the afternoon.
Later that night, between 10 and 11 PM, Shefali’s health suddenly worsened. She began trembling and lost consciousness. She was rushed to the hospital, but could not be saved. At the time of the incident, her husband Parag Tyagi, her mother, and a few others were present at their residence.
Police have collected witness statements, seized relevant evidence, and received preliminary forensic inputs. Investigators believe the anti-ageing medication may have triggered the cardiac event, though a final conclusion is pending further medical examination.

ICE Raids and Increased Federal Presence Cause Panic in Artesia’s Little India
ARTESIA, CA- Rumors circulated that ICE agents were targeting businesses in Artesia to apprehend un-documented workers. As a result, several businesses along Pioneer Blvd shut down early, and the usually bustling area fell silent. ICE did not appear that day.
June 15 – Over 20 ICE agents in face masks and tactical gear raided Big Penny Carwash (17509 Pioneer Blvd) around 9 a.m., arriving in a marked DHS van and an unmarked 15-seater. Without presenting a warrant or asking for IDs, they arrested five workers. The carwash manager’s questions about the arrests and lack of warrant were ignored. South Asian Network (SAN) has video documentation of the incident.
June 22 – In another alarming development, more than 50 National Guard members in fatigues attended the 8 a.m. Mass at Holy Family Catholic Church in Artesia, causing widespread panic among parishioners. Although the priest welcomed them, he also contacted the Archdiocese for guidance. Father Isaac Cuevas later advised the church to consider future services at a more neutral venue. These back-to-back appearances by ICE and the National Guard are no coincidence. In recent weeks, agencies have targeted immigrant-heavy
businesses—grocery stores, restaurants, salons, car washes, and swap meets— across Southern California. Weekends, once lively in Little India, are now quiet. Businesses report significant slowdowns as both work-ers and customers stay home out of fear—even those with legal status. This climate of fear and confusion has hit undocumented South Asians and mixed-status families particu-larly hard.
In response, South Asian Network has activated a rapid intervention plan:

High Court Limits Injunctions, Skips Trump Citizenship Rule
WASHINGTON, DC-The Supreme Court’s conservative majority ruled Friday that federal judges cannot issue nationwide injunctions, curbing a tool often used to block presidential policies. This marks a win for Donald Trump, whose administration faced repeated legal setbacks via such injunctions. However, the court left open the possibility that Trump’s effort to restrict birthright citizenship may still be blocked across the country as lower courts reconsider the case.
The ruling, authored by Justice Amy Coney Barrett, doesn’t greenlight Trump’s policy immediately. En-forcement is delayed for 30 days, and courts must now tailor injunctions to the parties directly involved. The outcome could lead to inconsistent rules across states, particularly the 22 that sued to stop the policy.
Both the Trump and Biden administrations opposed nationwide injunctions, arguing judges exceeded their authority. Justice Barrett emphasized that courts must not overreach: “The answer is not for the court to exceed its power, too.”
In dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor warned the decision invites the government to bypass constitutional safeguards, calling it “an open invitation” for executive overreach. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called the decision “terrifying” and a threat to democracy.
The order in question denies citizenship to children born in the U.S. to undocumented or temporary immi-grants — a challenge to long-standing interpretations of the 14th Amendment. Rights groups and state attorneys general plan to argue that only a nationwide hold can protect constitutional guarantees.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh, concurring, noted courts might still protect a broader group by defining them as a “putative nationwide class.”
Birthright citizenship, rooted in the post–Civil War Constitution and affirmed in an 1898 Supreme Court case, remains a defining issue. Judges so far have uniformly ruled against Trump’s order, but its final fate is still undecided as legal battles continue in lower courts.

DHS Launches E-Verify Update to Flag Revoked Work Authorizations
WASHINGTON, DC- In a move that could impact immigrant workers nationwide, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has introduced a new E-Verify feature that alerts employers when an employee’s work authorization has been revoked, Bloomberg reports.
The update arrives amid major immigration policy shifts, creating uncertainty for both employers and non-citizen workers.
Employers enrolled in E-Verify can now access a “status change report,” which notifies them if an employ-ee’s Employment Authorization Document (EAD) has been terminated, according to a DHS announcement Monday. The change follows a U.S. Supreme
Court decision that allows the Biden administration to end deportation protections and work permits for many immigrants formerly shielded under programs such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and humanitarian parole. Bloomberg reports that DHS has already begun notifying individuals in the Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela (CHNV) parole programs
Employers enrolled in E-Verify can now access a “status change report,” which notifies them if an employ-ee’s Employment Authorization Document (EAD) has been terminated, according to a DHS announcement Monday.
that their protections have ended. However, their employers are not being notified directly—fueling confusion in industries reliant on immigrant labor. Many affected individuals still hold valid-looking EAD cards but are no longer authorized to work due to changes in their immigration status. Over half reportedly have pending
asylum, green card, or TPS applications.
DHS is urging employers to use the new report to verify ongoing work eligibility. If an employee appears on the list and lacks alternative valid authorization, they must be terminated.
Still, DHS cautioned against misuse: “Businesses must act carefully,” the agency said. “The status change report should only be used to verify work authorization—not to target workers based on national origin.”
Improper use of the report could result in legal penalties. Employers who knowingly keep unauthorized workers may face fines or criminal charges, while selectively verifying based on nationality could violate federal anti-discrimination laws under the Immigration and Nationality Act.

DHS Sues Entire Maryland Federal Bench Over Immigration Case Policy
MARYLAND- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has filed an unprecedented lawsuit against all 15 federal judges in Maryland, challenging a court policy that automatically pauses certain immigra-tion-related cases. DHS argues the policy is unlawful and represents “an egregious example of judicial overreach.”
The Trump administration's attorneys made the argument directly to the court they're suing, criticizing the standing order issued in May that instructs court clerks to enter temporary administrative injunctions in habeas corpus cases filed by detained immigrants. These injunctions halt deportations or changes to the immigrants’ legal status for two business days.
According to the court, the policy was intended to preserve the “status quo” and manage a surge in cases filed outside regular hours, which had led to rushed hearings and difficulty in obtaining information on de-tainees’ whereabouts.
“The recent influx of habeas petitions...
has created scheduling difficulties and resulted in hurried and frus-trating hearings,” the court stated in its order.
In its lawsuit, DHS contends that frustration and convenience do not justify the court’s approach: “A sense of frustration and a desire for greater convenience do not give Defendants license to flout the law,” the administration’s attorneys wrote.
The lawsuit also includes a motion for all 15 Maryland judges to recuse themselves and for the case to be reassigned to a different court district or overseen by an external judge.
This legal challenge highlights the growing friction between the Trump administration’s aggressive immi-gration enforcement strategy and the judicial checks invoked by immigrants through due process.
One such case involved Maryland Judge Paula Xinis—now one of the named defendants—who ordered DHS to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who was mistakenly deported before receiving a legally mandated hearing. He was later returned to face trafficking charges in the U.S., marking the first known case of an immigrant being erroneously deported by the Trump administration before due process was completed.
guided by Anu Mal-hotra, who led participants through a transformative session of asanas, pranayama, and meditation, nur-turing inner alignment and well-being.
Emcee, Addresses & Ceremonial Highlights
Renowned emcee Simran Ahuja warmly welcomed the audience and invited Ms. Malhotra and Mr. Shah to the stage. Both delivered impactful messages on the deeper relevance of Yoga in modern life. Congress-man Foster and Consul General Ghosh shared inspiring remarks on Yoga’s role in fostering resilience and balance. A Lamp Lighting Ceremony followed,
featuring dignitaries, guest of honors, sponsors, and community leaders including FIA past presidents Pratibha Jairath, Vinita Gulabani, and Hitesh Gandhi.
Music, Meditation & Karma Yoga
The practice was accompanied by live, soul-stirring music from acclaimed musician Navneet Malhotra, elevating the energy of the space. A powerful meditation led by Anu Malhotra guided attendees into emo-tional clarity and spiritual stillness—many describing it as a deeply grounding experience. The event concluded with Prasadam distribution and a collective cleanup effort, symbolizing the spirit of Karma Yoga (selfless service).
Community & Collective Gratitude
This extraordinary celebration was supported by community partners including Sant Nirankari Mission, Arya Samaj of Chicagoland, A3N Media, Sewa International, and Hindu Satsang. A heartfelt vote of thanks rec-ognized all volunteers, sponsors, and partners whose dedication brought this vision to life. This year’s celebration was more than just an event—it was a movement. A living embodiment of unity, discipline, and conscious living, showcasing Chicagoland’s commitment to cultural harmony and global wellness.
CHICAGO, IL- Governor JB Pritzker has officially announced his re-election campaign, pledging to continue delivering real results for working families and to keep Illinois moving forward. The announcement is ac-companied by a new video, “Keep Illinois Moving Forward,” filmed in Chestnut, Illinois—the heart of the state—highlighting the stark choice between Illinois’ steady progress and the chaos unfolding in Washing-ton.
“These days, Illinois is at the center of the fight—to make life more affordable, to protect our freedoms, and to lead with common sense,” said Governor Pritzker. “We don’t just talk about problems in Illinois—we solve them. Because government should be a force for good, not a weapon of revenge.”
“I’m running for re-election to protect the progress we’ve made and to continue solving the challenges ahead. I love this
state, and it’s the honor of my life to serve as Governor. Whether you're in central Illinois or anywhere across the state, join me—let’s keep moving Illinois forward.”
The Governor’s re-election campaign comes on the heels of his seventh consecutive balanced budg-et—ushering in a new era of fiscal responsibility. Pritzker has also championed transformative infrastructure investments and major economic wins, posi-tioning Illinois as a national leader in future-focused industries like quantum computing and electric vehicle manufacturing. These efforts have created tens of thousands of jobs and brought billions in investment to communities across the state.
With abortion rights and civil rights protected in state law, and with stronger protections for LGBTQ and immigrant communities, Illinois continues to stand as a beacon of hope and freedom.
The Governor has also prioritized public safety, enacting a ban on assault weapons, bump stocks, and ghost guns, while mak-ing historic investments in violence prevention.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) have introduced Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP) technology to streamline and secure entry for U.S. citizens this summer.
EPP is a pre-primary queue segmentation process that uses autocapture photography to perform biometric confirmation, eligibility checks, and enforcement screening before travelers meet with a CBP of-ficer.
This fully automates the Simplified Arrival process, allowing officers to focus on travelers rather than manual procedures.
The touchless process is quick and efficient, with CBP officers available to assist passengers and answer questions. Travelers who prefer not to participate
EPP is part of CBP’s broader Airport Modernization efforts aimed at enhancing national security while improving traveler experience. By reducing manual tasks, the system frees officers to concentrate on high-er-risk travelers and more critical enforcement duties.
“This new secure technology helps us fulfill our enforcement mission while improving efficiency,” said LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, CBP’s Director of Field Operations in Chicago. “MSP travelers will benefit from faster customs processing and shorter wait times.”
EPP is also available at major airports including Chicago O’Hare, LAX, Atlanta, and international preclear-ance locations in Dublin and Montréal.

LA Marks 100th Birthday of Swami Purnatmananda with Grand Celebration
BELLFLOWER, CA — The 100th birth anniversary of Swami Purnatmananda, affectionately known as “Boro Swamiji,” was a moment of reflection and renewal as the Los Angeles chapter of Bharat Sevashram Sangha (BSS) hosted a grand celebration on June 8—and witnessed a historic passing of the torch. At a packed Bristol Civic Auditorium, Boro Swamiji, the current global President of BSS, formally named Swami Amarnathananda— the head of the New Jersey branch—as his successor to lead the Sangha’s work outside India. The emotional announcement was met with admiration as the community honored both a century-long legacy and the promise of continued spiritual leadership. Swami Amarnathananda, now entering his 50th year in the BSS monastic order, brings a wealth of experi-ence and scholarship. A respected spiritual teacher, Hindustani classical vocalist, and accomplished author, he has spent decades expanding BSS’s mission in India and abroad. His two books—one on the Bhagavad Gita and another on the teachings of BSS founder Swami Pranavanandaji Maharaj—are the product of over 20 years of study. His popular certificate course on Hinduism has become a cornerstone of the New Jersey ashram’s offerings.
The centenary celebration for Boro Swamiji was a vibrant and reverent affair. Traditional rituals like lamp lighting and garlanding set the tone, followed by a cultural showcase featuring classical Indian music and theatrical tributes to India’s spiritual and artistic heritage.
Since the 1980s, Boro Swamiji has guided BSS’s global expansion, establishing temples and community centers across the U.S.—including in California, New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Maryland, and Minnesota. Under his leadership, the Los Angeles-area Bharat Sevashram Sangha West (BSSW) received a transforma-tive donation of over 60 acres of land, laying the foundation for its long-term service in Southern Califor-nia.
Founded in 1917 by Acharya Srimat Swami Pranavanandaji Maharaj and headquartered in Kolkata, BSS is a global spiritual and humanitarian organization with hundreds of ashrams in India and abroad. Though Boro Swamiji’s daily presence will be missed, the transition is seen not as a farewell but a continu-ation.
“We remain eternally grateful,” said one devotee. “He has given us not only leadership, but a home and a vision for the future.” The milestone celebration was both a tribute to a towering spiritual figure and a renewed commitment to the Sangha’s mission in the West.

Indian Woman Vanishes Shortly After U.S. Arrival for Arranged Marriage
Aries
LINDENWOLD, NJ — A 24-year-old woman who recently traveled from India to the United States for a re-ported arranged marriage has gone missing, according to Lindenwold police.
Simran Simran was reported missing on Wednesday. She had arrived in the U.S. last Friday, reportedly to enter an arranged marriage. However, authorities were informed that the marriage may have been used as a means to obtain free airfare to the United States.
Surveillance footage reviewed by police shows Simran looking at her phone and waiting for someone. She did not appear to be in distress, officials said.
Police noted that Simran uses an international phone that only works over WiFi and that she does not speak English. Efforts to contact family in India have been unsuccessful, as there are reportedly no known relatives to reach out to regarding her whereabouts.
Simran is described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds, with a small scar on the left side of her forehead. She was last seen wearing gray sweatpants, a white t-shirt, black flip-flops, and small diamond-studded earrings.
Anyone with information about Simran’s whereabouts is urged to contact Lindenwold Police Detective Joe Tomasetti at 856-784-7566 ext. 421 or via email at jtomasetti@lindenwoldpd.com. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the Lindenwold Police Department’s website.
Usha Vance on Raising Children in a Hindu-Catholic Household
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Usha Vance, wife of Vice President J.D. Vance, is Hindu—and she's committed to ensuring her children grow up with an understanding of that part of their identity, even while being raised in a Catholic household.
In a recent interview with Meghan McCain, Usha opened up about raising their three children—Ewan, Vi-vek, and Mirabel—amid two distinct religious traditions. While her husband converted to Catholicism after their marriage, Usha has remained Hindu. Their children attend Catholic school
and take part in Church rites, but Usha emphasizes that baptism and full participation in Catholicism will ultimately be their choice.
“Our eldest, Ewan, has already chosen to be baptized,” she shared. “Vivek is still considering it. We want them to be thoughtful about their choice.”
Though Catholicism shapes much of their day-to-day life, Usha is intentional about keeping Hindu influ-ences present. “I’ve never intended to convert,” she said. “When JD became Catholic, we had long, serious conversations about what that means for our family.”
While they don’t currently celebrate major Hindu festivals like Diwali or Holi at home, Usha says her chil-dren stay connected to their Indian roots in other ways—through Hindu stories, cultural videos, and spending time with her side of the family.
“My grandmother is a devout Hindu— she prays daily, performs puja, and visits the temple regularly. That’s the exposure my children get,” Usha explained. “We may not celebrate the festivals just yet, but I’m hoping to start—maybe even host a Holi party next year.”

FIA Hosts Grand Curtain-Raiser for Historic 43rd India Day Parade in NYC
Indian Cinema Icons Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna Named Co-Grand Marshals as Cricmax Connect Unveils Cricket Revolution in the USA
NEW YORK, NY – The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA-NY-NJ-CTNE) hosted a moving curtain-raiser event at the Consulate General of India in New York, beginning with a heartfelt tribute to victims of recent tragedies from Pahalgam to Ahmedabad. The solemn moment set the tone for the event’s central theme, “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah – A Global Initiative for Universal Wellbeing,” a Sanskrit blessing that echoed throughout the evening as FIA unveiled plans for its landmark 43rd India Day Parade in NYC.
Two blockbuster announcements headlined the evening.
Indian cinema superstars Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna appeared via LED screens, delivering the parade theme in six languages—Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and English—before being revealed as co-Grand Marshals of this year’s parade. Both stars pledged to march on Madison Avenue on August 17, joining India’s Independence Day celebrations and closing their message with a powerful “Jai Hind!”
Hon. Ambassador Binaya S. Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York, praised FIA's impact over five decades, calling it a “force-multiplier for India’s image in America.” He encouraged the organization to copyright its signature concepts for global expansion. Deputy Consul General Vishal Harsh added his own reflections, recalling last year’s Chandrayaan-3 and Ram Mandir floats and declaring, “New York now measures cultural spectacle in tricolors.”
The event also marked the bold debut of Cricmax Connect, launched by founder and CEO Vinay Bhimjiani, who announced the company as title sponsor for this year’s Independence festivities. Bhimjiani shared his ambitious goal: to make cricket as mainstream as soccer in the U.S. within a decade. “Major League Cricket is only in its third season and already has Microsoft and IPL money behind it,” he
said. “Imagine Little League parks from Queens to Cupertino echoing with the sound of leather on willow.”
The Cricmax launch will feature a historic cricket exhibition at the L.A. Coliseum on July 14, a dress rehearsal for cricket’s return to the Olympics in 2028. On parade day, a mini-pitch on Madison Avenue will invite families to swing a bat between floats, with interactive touchscreens showcasing real-time data from Cricmax’s innovative coaching app. “We're not importing selfie moments. We're cultivating home-grown talent,” Bhimjiani said, joined by USA Cricket CEO Dr. Atul Rai, who urged U.S. cities to open dormant baseball fields for cricket clinics. “Cricket is already the world’s second-biggest game—let’s make it America’s next obsession.”
Axria’s Chandra Mohan and Sreekanth Akkapalli also pledged long-term support as grand sponsors, rein-forcing the parade’s strategic growth.
FIA Chairman Ankur Vaidya honored late Chairman Emeritus Ramesh Patel with a moment of silence and emphasized the event as a community celebration, run entirely by volunteers. He hinted at major collabo-rations and MOUs to be unveiled after the parade, including the much-anticipated Gala at Cipriani.
FIA President Saurin Parikh revealed the 2025
theme “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah” as a global call for healing. This year’s pastelhued poster, adorned with mandalas and peace symbols, will be central to all materials. For the first time, ethnic associations may enter floats free of charge. “This parade isn’t pay-to-play— it’s pride-to-participate,” Parikh said. The FIA Executive Committee shared key updates:
• Dr. Avinash Gupta, Immediate Past President, encouraged readers to subscribe to FIA’s Diaspora Bi-Weekly for updates.
• Haresh Shah, Joint Treasurer, confirmed the Times Square flag hoisting at 8 a.m. on August 15.
• Mahesh Dubal, Joint Secretary, announced the Empire State Building will glow in tricolor that night.
• Deepak Goel, Vice President, shared that cultural contingents from Guyana, Mauritius, and Réunion Is-land will participate.
• Smita Miki Patel, Executive VP, announced 18 youth performances choreographed around the “Sarve Bhavantu” theme.
• Priti Ray Patel, VP, detailed the post-parade Gala at Cipriani Wall Street, including a “Gol Gappa Competi-tion” to crown NYC’s pani-puri champ. “This gala will blend timeless tradition with modern elegance,” said Manan Saxena, FIA Gala Convenor. “Expect New York’s longest, Instagramworthy dessert table—a true celebration of unity and culture.” Amit Verma, U.S. Country Head for State Bank of India, reflected on the parallel journeys of FIA and SBI: “FIA was founded in 1970. SBI came to America in 1971—our stories are braided together.” With star power, cricket's rising momentum, and deep community involvement, FIA’s 43rd India Day Parade is set to not only transform Madison Avenue—but redefine how America celebrates Indian culture. The countdown to August 17, 2025, has officially begun.

In other cases, agents have been punched, dragged by vehicles, or swarmed by crowds filming arrests.
President Donald Trump has ordered ICE to carry out the “largest mass deportation program in history,” targeting both criminal offenders and undocumented immigrants with no criminal record. This marks a sharp shift from prior protocols that prioritized public safety and focused on individuals with serious con-victions.
Policing experts warn the administration’s tactics—mask-wearing agents, unmarked cars, and arrests in public areas—are not only reckless but dangerous. Former ICE Chief of Staff Jason Houser criticized the shift away from deescalation, calling current actions quota-driven rather than safety-focused. "It's not about public safety anymore," he said. Public backlash is intensifying. Recent raids in Los Angeles led to protests and vandalism. In Huntington Park, a man impersonating an ICE agent was caught with radios, fake documents, and a firearm—raising concerns about accountability and public trust. Mayor Arturo

Flores criticized the lack of transparency, stating, “If you're acting with federal authority, show it.” Meanwhile, the Libertarian Cato Institute reports that ICE is arresting four times more non-criminal immi-grants than during Trump’s first term. Critics argue this shift heightens community fear and increases the likelihood of violence. Law enforcement experts fear these tactics—combined with the rise in “Stand Your Ground” states—could trigger deadly encounters. ICE maintains that interference from activists and "sanctuary" jurisdictions forces agents into more visible, risky actions. But opponents say the administration’s aggressive style is escalating tensions and eroding trust. Despite rising dangers and pushback, DHS says it has no plans to ease enforcement. “We will not be de-terred,” the agency posted on X.

The two-day seminar inspired hundreds to reflect inward, deepen their spiritual understanding, and em-brace the journey of self-realization.
Trump Strikes Back: L.A. Sued Over Sanctuary Protections
WASHINGTON, DC- The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles, alleging its immigration policies discriminate against federal law enforcement by treating them differently from local law enforcement agencies. Filed in the Central District of California, the lawsuit opens by referencing Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, stating he "campaigned and won the presidential election on a platform of deporting the mil-lions of illegal immigrants the previous administration permitted, through its open borders policy, to enter the country unlawfully."

New Warning That Could Affect Millions of Green Card Holders
WASHINGTON, DC-Green card holders in the U.S. have been warned that supporting terrorism or violence can lead to the revocation of their legal status. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is-sued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing that living in America as a visa or green card holder is a privilege that requires respect for U.S. laws and values.
“If you advocate violence, support terrorist activity, or encourage others to do so, you are no longer eligi-ble to stay in the U.S.,” USCIS wrote.
The warning aligns with the Trump administration’s intensified immigration enforcement. While focusing on undocumented immigrants, the crackdown also affects lawful permanent residents. Green card holders and visa recipients have been detained during raids, with some facing possible deportation.
USCIS reiterated: “Green

New Jersey Expands Aid for Summer Electricity Costs
NEW JERSEY- New Jersey residents struggling with increased energy bills this summer can expect more relief.
Last week, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) approved agreements with the state’s four elec-tric distribution companies— Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G), Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), Atlantic City Electric (ACE), and Rockland Electric Company (RECO)— to help reduce the financial burden on customers over the coming months.
Key measures include:
(BGS) auction, which sets prices for power purchased from outside the state. Rising demand and a strained regional power grid have contributed to the surge.
under a broader effort to combat antisemitism and curb extremist support.
Notably, Palestinian activist and Columbia graduate student Mahmoud Khalil was arrested at his university apartment, while his friend Mohsen Mahdawi, a green card holder, was detained during a citizenship ap-pointment. Both were later released after legal proceedings. Meanwhile, immigration courts remain overwhelmed, with a backlog exceeding 3.7 million cases, according to Syracuse University data.
USCIS reiterated: “Green cards and visas will be revoked if an alien breaks the law.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed this in March, stating student visas won’t be granted to individuals intending to cause campus unrest.
The administration is expected to continue aggressive enforcement, expanding green card and visa revocations under its deportation agenda.
H-1B Holder Frustrated as U.S. Company Refuses Green Card Sponsorship
• Two interest-free $30 deferrals for all residential customers in July and August, to be repaid over the fol-lowing six months.
• A suspension of power shutoffs during the summer.
• Waived reconnection fees for disconnected service.
In addition, the BPU approved the funding timeline for the second installment of the Residential Energy Assistance Payment, part of a $430 million state program aimed at helping income-eligible households. Enhancements to the Universal Service Fund (USF) were also approved, including:

energy efficiency and assistance programs.
These USF changes will take effect October 1, 2025.
The recent spike in energy costs stems from the June 1 rate increases following last year’s Basic Genera-tion Service
Governor Phil Murphy placed much of the blame on the Pennsylvania Jersey Maryland (PJM) Interconnec-tion, which operates the regional grid serving New Jersey and 12 other states plus Washington, D.C.
“PJM has failed to plan for increased energy capacity and is trying to pass the buck onto the people of New Jersey,” said Governor Murphy.
Customers of the four electric companies are facing bill increases between 17.2% and 20.2%, pushing some households' monthly costs nearly 30% higher than in 2023.
To ease the impact, Governor Murphy recently announced a direct bill assistance program offering:
• At least $100 in relief for all customers, and
• Up to $250 for low- to moderateincome residents.
“I am grateful to our electric distribution companies for stepping up with plans to ease costs and help solve the crisis caused by PJM,” Murphy said. “Our focus is on delivering immediate relief while continuing to pursue long-term solutions.”
A virtual public information session will be held Monday, June 23 at 5:30 p.m. to provide an overview of these summer relief efforts and consumer protections.
WASHINGTON, DC- While Canada offers a comparatively easier path to permanent residency, the job market there remains challenging—especially for Indian immigrants, according to several social media us-ers who responded to an H-1B visa holder on Reddit.
The individual explained that they received their H-1B visa last year, got it stamped in India, and entered the U.S. However, their current employer has informed them that they won't be able to sponsor a PERM application for a green card, stating: “My role doesn’t meet the requirements for the application.” The company has given the person a year to find another employer willing to sponsor the PERM, potentially for a different role.
Meanwhile, the Reddit user shared that they have recently received Canadian Permanent Residency, pre-senting them with an alternative. They sought advice on whether to stay in the U.S. and continue the job search or move to Canada, where visa hurdles would be fewer.
The online debate highlighted the difficulties Indian professionals face in both countries. While the U.S. poses immigration hurdles, Canada's tight job market raises concerns.
