White
House Responds To Latest Trump-Epstein Claim

Washington:
A new Wall Street Journal report claims US President Donald Trump was informed that his name appears multiple times in files related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly alerted Trump in May, though the context remains unclear. Trump denies any wrongdoing, with the White House dismissing the report as “fake news.”
Trump’s past ties to Epstein have long fueled conspiracy theories popular among his MAGA supporters. He had once promised to release all Epstein-related files after returning to office this January, but Bondi later said there was “nothing to release,” angering many Trump backers. The controversy reignited last week when WSJ reported Trump wrote a lewd birthday note to Epstein in 2003, which the President denies and is now suing the outlet over. The latest report adds little new, but it prompted immediate damage control from Trump’s team. Communications director Steven Cheung said Trump had distanced himself
Microsoft Server Hack Hits 8,000 Firms, Likely One Attacker

A global attack on Microsoft server software used by thousands of government agencies and businesses to share documents within organisations is likely the work of a single actor, a cybersecurity researcher said on Monday.
Microsoft on Saturday issued an alert about "active attacks" on SharePoint servers used within organisations. It said that SharePoint Online in Microsoft 365, which is in the cloud, was not hit by the exploit, also known as a "zero day" because it was previously unknown to cybersecurity researchers. "Based on the consistency of the tradecraft seen across observed attacks, the campaign launched on Friday appears to be a single actor.
The Trump team used the "Obama Russiagate scandal" to distract people's attention from the intensifying speculation over Trump's handling of the case against the late sex offender and reputed pedophile pimp.
Trump’s Hardline Tariffs Start to Pay Off

Pfrom Epstein “years ago,” even banning him from his club for inappropriate behavior.
In response to the renewed scrutiny, the White House ramped up attacks on former President Barack Obama. Trump’s intelligence chief, Tulsi Gabbard, alleged a “yearslong coup” orchestrated by Obama, reviving claims that 2016 election interference investigations were politically motivated. Gabbard pointed to declassified documents she says prove intelligence was manipulated to frame Trump for colluding with Russia.
However, multiple prior investigations have confirmed Russian interference in the 2016 election to help Trump win.
Jeffrey Epstein, a financier connected to several powerful figures including Trump, was convicted of sex crimes and died by suicide in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial for trafficking underage girls. His death remains central to numerous conspiracy theories promoted by Trump supporters.
Trump Hails Gabbard Over 2016 Election Report

At a recent White House event, US President Donald Trump caused fresh controversy by praising Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard as "the hottest one in the room". He commended her newly released report that alleges former President Barack Obama orchestrated a plot to rig the 2016 election.
"Oh, where's Tulsi? She's, like, hotter than everybody," Trump said. "She has all the documents. She found out that Barack Hussein Obama led a group of people and they cheated in the elections." He added, "They cheated without question. It's not even a quote."
"She told me, 'You've seen nothing yet,'"
Trump applauded Gabbard and said, "Tulsi, great job, and I know you have a lot more coming."
he continued. "We're very proud of you, Tulsi. They cheated so badly... and it shouldn't have been a loss. It was a big victory." The report which was recently made public, claims to uncover Obama-era communications that show attempts to manipulate the outcome of 2016 elections. The report proves that there was no manipulation of vote totals. However, it implies that the absence of vote tampering undermines the broader finding of Russian interference in the 2016 election, something several bipartisan investigations have long upheld.
Trump applauded Gabbard and said, "Tulsi, great job, and I know you have a lot more coming."
Trump accused Obama of 'treason' and blamed him of efforts to tie him to Russia and undermine his 2016 presidential campaign.
resident Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff tactics are beginning to show tangible results, as the United States and Japan have struck a long-awaited trade deal. After months of negotiations and threats of harsh tariffs, Japan agreed to a deal that, while protecting its key agricultural imports, will see it increase US rice imports and commit to $500 billion in investment into the American economy. This agreement is being hailed by the White House as a major win for Trump’s “America First” trade strategy. Japan, the largest holder of US Treasury bonds and a country with a substantial trade surplus with the US, had initially pushed back hard. Its finance minister had even hinted at using the country’s $1.1 trillion bond holdings as leverage. But ultimately, Tokyo chose to make a deal rather than risk a 25% tariff threatened by Trump. The US Treasury is already seeing a windfall from these tariff measures. Tariff revenue now exceeds $100 billion annually—accounting for 5% of federal revenue, up from the typical 2%. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent predicts this could reach $300 billion by year’s end.
So far, this has occurred without major retaliation from US trade partners and with relatively limited market instability. However, US consumers are feeling the impact through rising prices on imported goods, worsened by a 10% drop in the US dollar’s value this year. Despite expectations that a stronger dollar might offset the cost, the opposite has happened, increasing import expenses further.
Some market analysts suggest this dollar weakening may be part of a broader plan to support American manufacturers by boosting export competitiveness. In the bigger picture, Japan’s deal could serve as a model for other nations like the EU, potentially pushing them to negotiate rather than resist. While uncertainties remain, Trump’s tariff gamble appears to be delivering its first major diplomatic and economic dividends.

China Defends Brahmaputra Dam, Denies Downstream Harm
HiIndia Newsdesk
Amid growing concerns in India and Bangladesh over China's newly announced hydropower project on the Yarlung Zangbo River (known as the Brahmaputra in India), Beijing has issued a detailed statement defending the project, calling it a matter of national sovereignty and clean energy development.
"To build the hydropower project in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River is fully within China's sovereignty," the official statement said.
"The project aims to speed up clean energy development, improve local people's life, and proactively respond to climate change."
The move has sparked apprehensions in downstream nations about potential ecological disruption and water flow control.
However, China claims that it is acting "with a high sense of responsibility" in handling cross-border rivers and that

Chief Minister Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh has called the dam a "ticking water bomb" and an existential threat.
the project meets the "highest national industrial standards."

Trump Aide Meets Imran's Sons, Slams 'Political Prosecution'

California: Richard Grenell, US
President Donald Trump's envoy for special missions, on Tuesday (local
time) met the sons of jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in California and once again called for the former Pakistani Prime Minister's release, terming his arrest a case of "political prosecution."
Grenell posted a photo with Imran Khan's elder son Sulaiman Isa and his second son Kasim Khan, writing that he "loved hanging out" with them and welcoming them to California. In a post on X, Grenell wrote, "Welcome to California, my friends. I loved hanging out with you today. Sulaiman and @Kasim_Khan_1999, you must stay strong. There are millions of people around the world who are sick of political prosecutions. You are not alone."
industrial standards. The project puts a lot of emphasis on all-round ecological conservation, stays away from multiple environmentally sensitive areas, and vows to preserve the original ecosystem to the largest extent possible," the statement added.
China further claims that the dam will not adversely impact downstream regions. Instead, it argues, the hydropower facility will aid in disaster mitigation along the river.
Ethiopia Denies Trump’s Claim on US Funding Nile Dam

An Ethiopian official has denied Donald Trump's claim that the United States helped fund Ethiopia's new megadam on the River Nile, saying it is false and "destructive". Last week, President Trump said the controversial dam was built "with United States money, largely".
Officially known as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam , the project is Africa's biggest hydro-electric plant and a major source of pride for Ethiopians.
Over the 14 years it has taken to complete Gerd, the Ethiopian authorities have repeatedly said that the dam was funded by the government, along with contributions from the Ethiopian people.
Israel, Ukraine To Hold Talks On Countering "Threats" Posed By Iran

Israel and Ukraine said Wednesday they had agreed to start talks on countering the "threat" posed by Iran, in a sign of deepening ties between the two countries.
Both see Iran, a close ally of Russia, as a
malign actor on the world stage. Israel has long accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons, an allegation it denies, while Ukraine is regularly attacked from Russia by Iranian-designed drones. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga described Iran as an "existential threat" to global security during a joint press conference in Kyiv with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar -- the most senior Israeli official to visit Ukraine since 2023.
"Our countries face common security challenges. Today we have decided to launch a separate dialogue on the Iranian threat," Sybiga said. Saar said any effort to curb Tehran's access to weapons and technology contributed to the security of Europe and Ukraine.
Musk's X Calls French Foreign Interference Probe
"Politically Motivated", Refuses To Cooperate

A French probe into alleged foreign interference and bias via the algorithm at Elon Musk-owned social network X is "politically motivated", the company said in a post Monday, adding that it was refusing to cooperate. "X believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech," the social network said.
It added that it "has not acceded to the French authorities' demands" to access its recommendation algorithm and real-time data, "as we have a legal right to do".
Cybercrime prosecutors announced the opening of the probe on July 11 into suspected crimes including manipulating and extracting data from automated systems "as part of a criminal gang".
The move followed two complaints received in January about "foreign interference" in French politics via X -- one of them from Eric Bothorel, an MP from President Emmanuel Macron's centrist party.
Bothorel had complained of "reduced diversity of voices and options" and Musk's "personal interventions" on the network since his 2022 takeover of the former Twitter.
The Tesla and SpaceX chief has raised hackles in Europe with political sallies, including vocal backing for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of February legislative elections. "Democracy is too fragile to let digital platform owners tell us what to think, who to vote for or even who to hate," Bothorel said after the investigation was announced.

Next VP Likely From BJP, Aligned With Party Ideology

The Election Commission has started preparing for the Vice Presidential election
New Delhi:
The next Vice President will be a veteran leader from the BJP, top sources in the party have told NDTV, ruling out
speculation that the BJP may consider key allies, such as JDU chief Nitish Kumar, for the top post vacated by the sudden exit of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. "The Vice President will be someone closely associated with the party's ideology," a top BJP leader said.
Earlier, a meeting between JDU leader and Union Minister Ram Nath Thakur and BJP chief JP Nadda had sparked a buzz. But BJP sources trashed such speculation, stressing that it was a routine interaction. The sources also said the BJP had not spoken to the JDP leadership about the Vice President post. The Election Commission has started preparing for the Vice Presidential election. The poll body has said in a press note that the poll schedule will be announced after the formalities.
Columbia University to pay $200m in settlement with Trump administration

Columbia University has agreed to pay $200m (£147m) to President Donald Trump's administration over accusations it failed to protect its Jewish students. The settlement, which will be paid to the federal government over three years, was announced in a statement by the university and confirmed by the president on social media.
In exchange, the government has agreed to return some of the $400m in federal
grants it froze or terminated in March. Columbia was the first school targeted by the administration for its alleged failures to curb antisemitism amid last year's Israel-Gaza war protests on its New York City campus. It had already agreed to a set of demands from the White House in March. The deal with Columbia University is "a seismic shift in our nation's fight" to hold universities accountable, Education Secretary Linda McMahon said. Claire Shipman, Columbia's acting president, said in a statement: "This agreement marks an important step forward after a period of sustained federal scrutiny and institutional uncertainty." Columbia is among a list of universities that have been pursued by the Trump administration over protests against Israel's war campaign in Gaza and other issues, including transgender athletes and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programmes.

NEWS IN BRIEF
US Senator Warns India, China Over Russia Ties

Graham had earlier proposed a bill calling for 500 per cent tariffs on goods from countries continuing to trade with Russia, including India and China.
Washington:
US Senator Lindsey Graham has warned that American President Donald Trump will impose steep tariffs on Moscow's trading partners --including India and China-- if they don't stop buying Russian oil amid Russia's war in Ukraine. The Republican lawmaker said the Trump administration was planning to impose a 100 per cent tariff on oil-related imports, fueling Russian President Vladimir Putin's campaign against Kyiv. Graham had earlier proposed a bill calling for 500 per cent tariffs on goods from countries continuing to trade with Russia, including India and China. "Trump is going to impose tariffs on people that buy Russian oilChina, India, and Brazil... Here's what I would tell China, India and Brazil: If you keep buying cheap Russian oil to allow this war to continue, we're going to tear up the hell out of you, and we're going to crush your economy," Graham said during an interview with Fox News.
Tribunal Rejects Congress' Appeal Against Rs.199 Cr Tax Demand
The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal or ITAT has dismissed the party's claim for exemption due to late filing of IT returns and violations of cash donation limits.
The Congress will not get any relief for the income tax demand to the tune of Rs 199 crore in party funds, pending from 2018-19.
The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal or ITAT has dismissed the party's claim for exemption due to late filing of IT returns and violations of cash donation limits.
"The assessee's return filed on 2.02.2019 is not within the 'due' date to make it eligible for the impugned exemption," the ITAT said.
The Congress had filed its income tax return on February 2, 2019 - well beyond the due date of December 31,

2018 -- and declared nil income. It also claimed an exemption of Rs 199.15 crore.
But in September 2019, the Assessing Officer found out during scrutiny that the party accepted Rs 14.49 lakh in cash donations - many of the donations exceeding the Rs 2,000 per donor limit under the law.
Donations above Rs 2000 are to be paid
through banking channels like cheques or bank transfer.
Tax was accordingly levied on the whole amount.
When the Congress sought exemption, the IT department denied the claim in 2021. In March 2023, the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals) upheld the decision.
Why VP Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigned
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation on health grounds has triggered political shockwaves, with sources indicating a deeper controversy behind the move.
At the heart of the issue is Dhankhar’s decision to accept an Oppositionbacked motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma, following a massive cash recovery from the judge’s residence. This move reportedly clashed with the Centre’s own strategy to act against judicial corruption, leading to murmurs of a government-backed no-confidence motion against the Vice President.
During the Monsoon Session, Dhankhar, as Rajya Sabha Chairman, admitted the Opposition’s notice and instructed procedural action. This reportedly angered the ruling party,

who preferred to lead the judicial accountability drive themselves. To avoid a potential showdown, Dhankhar chose to resign.
At 9:25 PM, Dhankhar submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, citing medical advice and invoking Article 67(a) of the Constitution. He thanked the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and MPs for their support and enriching experiences. While PM Modi praised Dhankhar’s service, senior Congress leaders called the resignation "inexplicable." The absence of BJP leaders JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju at a key parliamentary meeting was also cited as a factor that upset Dhankhar, though Nadda denied any disrespect toward the Chair.Opposition leaders viewed the resignation as a mystery, especially since Dhankhar had recently said he would serve until 2027 "barring divine intervention." His resignation was formally accepted today.

Fraud Files: The Month Indian Americans Dominated Headlines -- for All the Wrong Reasons

As Indian Americans continue to soar professionally, a recent spate of fraud cases has sent shockwaves through a proud community and raised tough questions about the costs of ambition gone wrong
Last week, a shoplifting incident involving an Indian woman in the U.S. made headlines and sparked viral debate online. But this week, the headlines took a far darker turn. Three separate, serious criminal cases involving Indian Americans ranging from real estate scams to falsified visa fraud and an opioid prescription scandal have unfolded across the U.S., spotlighting a disturbing pattern that's left the Indian-American community stunned.
While there is no doubt that these are isolated incidents in a community that is widely known for its educational attainment, professional success, and cultural influence. Indian Americans have among the highest median incomes and educational levels in the country. But perhaps it’s that very reputation that makes these criminal cases stand out and sting so much more.
Case 1: From Glitter to Guilt—The Mukherjee Real Estate Scam
In Texas, Sidhartha “Sammy” and Sunita Mukherjee, once stars of North Texas’s Indian-American social circuit, now face charges of running a multi-milliondollar real estate scam.
The couple, known for hosting lavish cultural galas and Bollywood-style events, are accused of defrauding over 100 investors out of more than $4 million. According to police and FBI investigators, the Mukherjees forged housing contracts and faked invoices to lure unsuspecting victims into investing in nonexistent real estate projects.
One victim lost $325,000. Others reported bounced dividend checks and vanished projects. Though the couple had filed for bankruptcy in 2023, it didn’t deter their public image as cultural icons. But authorities say behind the scenes, they were operating one of the region’s most audacious fraud rings possibly even misusing pandemic relief funds. Now charged with first-degree felony theft, they face up to 99 years in prison if convicted.
Case 2: Visa Games and Badge Corruption in Louisiana
In another chilling development, Chandrakant “Lala” Patel, a businessman in Louisiana, has been indicted alongside three police chiefs and a city marshal in a
There is no doubt that these are isolated incidents in a community that is widely known for its educational attainment, professional success, and cultural influence. Indian Americans have among the highest median incomes and educational levels in the country. But perhaps it’s that very reputation that makes these criminal cases stand out and sting so much more.
sprawling U Visa fraud scheme.
According to federal prosecutors, Patel paid police officers $5,000 per person to fabricate armed robbery reports—allowing undocumented individuals, mostly with the last name “Patel,” to falsely claim they were crime victims and apply for the coveted U Visa.
The fraudulent documents involved at least 25 individuals. Court records show Patel also transferred over $230,000 in cash and property to the officers.
The scheme echoes another high-profile case this May, where two Indian-American men in Massachusetts, Rambhai Patel and Balwinder Singh, pleaded guilty to staging armed robberies across nine U.S. businesses; so employees could fraudulently apply for U Visas. One person reportedly paid $20,000 to stage a robbery with fake surveillance footage and all.
Case 3: Doctor or Drug Dealer? The Ritesh Kalra Pill Mill Case
Perhaps the most deeply unsettling case involves Dr. Ritesh Kalra, a New Jersey-based internist who federal authorities say turned his clinic into a “pill mill”-- writing over 31,000 oxycodone prescriptions between 2019 and 2025, sometimes issuing more than 50 a day.
Kalra is accused not only of fueling the opioid epidemic with reckless prescriptions, but also of trading prescriptions for sex and billing for nonexistent consultations. U.S. Attorney Alina Habba described the charges as a betrayal of the physician’s sacred trust: “Dr. Kalra used his position to fuel addiction, exploit vulnerable patients for sex, and defraud New Jersey’s public healthcare program.”
Kalra, who appeared before a judge in Newark last week, has been placed under home incarceration on a $100,000 unsecured bond, and ordered to suspend his medical practice while awaiting trial.
His attorney, has pushed back strongly, accusing the government of sensationalizing the case and comparing the DOJ’s press release to “a supermarket tabloid.” Kalra’s case joins a growing list of U.S. doctors implicated in opioid-related fraud -- a core focus of the government’s ongoing crackdown on prescription drug abuse.
A Moment of Reckoning
For many Indian Americans watching these cases unfold, the reaction is a mix of shock, embarrassment, and quiet frustration. These crimes are not reflective of the community at large yet they are deeply disturbing in how they exploit trust, power, and public systems.
The vast majority of Indian Americans believe in the honest pursuit of the American Dream through education, hard work, and civic contribution. That’s exactly why these cases hit so hard: they don’t just damage reputations, they disturb the moral center of a community that has spent decades building its credibility.
As court proceedings unfold, one hopes the justice system distinguishes truth from spectacle. But the message is clear -- success, when pursued without integrity, can unravel in the most public and painful ways.

US May See 70–80% Drop in Indian Students Amid Visa Crisis

HiIndia Newsdesk
US universities are witnessing a drastic 70–80% decline in Indian student arrivals this year, mainly due to an ongoing visa appointment freeze and a spike in rejections.
Education consultants in Hyderabad report that outbound student traffic has plunged as students struggle to secure visa slots. “Usually by now, most students are done with interviews. This year, we’re still refreshing the portal daily,” said Sanjeev Rai from Hyderabad Overseas Consultant. Though US authorities promised a phased release of visa slots, many students haven’t received confirmations, creating panic. Some consultants suspect the US is testing the system. With time running out, students are exploring alternate destinations. “I couldn’t wait. I’ve now applied to Germany,” said a 23-year-old engineering aspirant.
Adding to the stress, even students who secured slots early are now facing higher visa rejection rates— many under Section 214(b), which implies failure to prove strong ties to India.
Ankit Jain of Window Overseas noted that even well-prepared students with clean records are being rejected without clear explanations. Consultant Arvind Manduva warned that if the situation doesn’t improve, “thousands of dreams will be shattered.” Panic calls from families are rising daily.
A US Consulate spokesperson in Hyderabad confirmed that visa appointments have resumed and urged early applications, stressing thorough vetting is key to national security. Last year, India sent over 3.3 lakh students to the US, surpassing China. As uncertainty grows, Europe is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative.
India To Sign Trade Deals Only If Beneficial: Piyush Goyal
Union Commerce Minister
Piyush Goyal on Saturday said that India will enter international trade agreements only if they serve the country's interests.
Addressing the media during an event organised by leading industry chamber Assocham here, the minister said if India gets a good trade deal, it will go ahead with it.
Goyal said that negotiations with the US are ongoing, adding that trade deals would materialise only if these are in the country's larger interests. "If it doesn't happen, we will not do it. India always puts the country's interest first," the minister asserted.

India and the US teams have concluded the fifth round of talks for the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) in Washington this week. The negotiations
were held for four days in Washington, DC. India's chief negotiator and special secretary in the Department of Commerce, Rajesh Agrawal, lead the team for negotiations.

US Probe Chief Calls Air India Crash Reports Premature

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy has cautioned against drawing early conclusions in the investigation of the June 12 crash of Air India Flight 171, which killed 260 people. Responding to reports that the captain may have mistakenly shut off fuel control switches, Homendy called such claims “premature and speculative.”
India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), leading the probe with US support, released a preliminary report stating that two fuel switches were moved to the “cutoff” position just after takeoff, starving the engines. Though the action was reversed within 10 seconds, it was too late to recover.
A cockpit voice recording revealed a pilot questioning the captain's move, which the latter denied. The investigation is focused on whether the switch-off was due to human error or system failure. So far, no mechanical faults have been found. Final conclusions may take a year or more.

Addressing a gathering of industry leaders and entrepreneurs during the event, the minister emphasised the importance of mindset change in the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector.
He called for a shift towards collective growth and mutual cooperation between small and large companies.
"We need a change in goals, guidance and mindset. Big or small, companies have to grow together. We have to support each other and be vocal for local interests," he highlighted. He also emphasised the need for focus on research, innovation, quality and expansion by MSMEs to compete globally.
Trump Warns BRICS Could End Over 10% Tariff Threat

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday reiterated his threat to impose a 10% tariff on imports from BRICS nations, warning that the group would "end very quickly" if it ever formed meaningfully. Without naming countries, Trump criticized BRICS for what he claims are “Anti-American policies” and vowed to defend the U.S. dollar's global status, rejecting any central bank digital currency for America. The BRICS bloc—originally Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—recently expanded to include Iran and Indonesia. Trump accused the group, without evidence, of aiming to undermine the U.S. and the dollar.
Despite Trump’s claims, BRICS leaders have denied being antiAmerican. While Brazil dropped plans for a common currency, BRICS is developing a cross-border payment system, BRICS Pay, to promote trade in local currencies.
Trump also targeted Brazil specifically, announcing a 50% tariff on its imports starting August and ordering an investigation into alleged unfair trade practices.
Jets Were Shot Down": Trump Makes Another Op Sindoor Claim

New Delhi:
US President Donald Trump on Friday claimed that "five jets were shot down" in the recent conflict between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack. His remarks, made at a private dinner with Republican lawmakers at the White House, did not specify which country's aircraft were downed.
"In fact, planes were being shot out of the air. Five, five, four or five, but I think five jets were shot down actually," Trump said, referring to the brief but intense military exchange between the nuclear-armed neighbours. Pakistan has consistently claimed that its air force downed Indian jets during the engagement, including three French-built Rafale fighters, and that it had captured Indian pilots. Islamabad has not provided any evidence to substantiate these claims.

No Second H-1B Lottery This Year

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has officially announced that it has received enough petitions to meet the annual H-1B visa cap for fiscal year 2026. This signals the end of this year’s selection process for new H-1B petitions.
Earlier this year, in March, USCIS randomly selected 118,660 unique applicants, approximately 35.3% of the total registrations submitted to meet the statutory cap of 85,000 H-1B visas available for FY 2026. With the cap now filled, USCIS confirmed that no additional lottery rounds will be conducted for FY 2026.
However, USCIS will continue processing H-1B petitions not subject to the annual cap. These include applications for extensions of stay, changes of employer, amendments to existing H-1B petitions, and cases where employment is exempt from the cap. Employers whose registrations were not selected should expect their USCIS online accounts to show the status “Not Selected: Not eligible to file an H-1B cap petition based on this registration.” Following past practice, USCIS is expected to issue formal non-selection notices through its online portal to both employers and their legal representatives in the coming days. For foreign nationals who were not selected in this round, re-registration for the FY 2027 H-1B cap season will be necessary. The next lottery cycle is anticipated to open in Spring 2026, as unselected registrations do not carry forward automatically.
7/11 Blasts: Bombay HC Acquits All 12 Accused
In a significant ruling, the Bombay High Court on Monday (July 21, 2025) acquitted all 12 individuals convicted in the 7/11 Mumbai train blasts in 2006, stating that the prosecution had “utterly failed” to prove the charges against them.
A Special Division Bench of Justices Anil S. Kilor and Shyam C. Chandak set aside the convictions delivered by a special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court in 2015, which had sentenced five of the accused to death sentence and the remaining seven to life imprisonment under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), and Explosives Acts. One
of the twelve accused named, Kamal Ahmed Mohammed Vakil Ansari died in 2021 to COVID-19 infection while he was lodged in Nagpur prison. The Bench observed, “The prosecution has utterly failed in establishing the case beyond reasonable doubts. It is hard to believe that the accused committed the crime. Hence, their conviction is quashed and set aside.”

Almost two decades after the deadly attack, the Bombay High Court has ruled that the prosecution failed to prove charges and set aside death and life sentences by Special Court in 2015
In a detailed order, the Bench said, “Punishing the actual perpetrator of a crime is a concrete and essential step toward curbing criminal activities, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring the safety and security of citizens. But creating a false appearance of having solved a case by presenting that the accused have been brought to justice gives a misleading sense of resolution.” The court noted the lack of conclusive evidence and inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case. It stated that the chain of circumstances was not complete and confessional statements were unreliable. Circumstantial evidence presented was not sufficient to link the accused to the actual planning or execution of the bombings, the Bench said.

Detective Brennan called Sammy Mukherjee “probably the most prolific fraudster” in his 23-year career, citing the widespread nature of the fraud. The couple faces serious charges, including first-degree felony theft, which carries a sentence of 5 to 99 years. Sammy was re-arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after posting a $500,000 bond and is currently held at a detention center near Fort Worth. Their immigration status remains unclear, and Sammy is also wanted for fraud in Mumbai. He has denied all allegations, calling them a smear campaign fueled by jealousy.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion jokingly said after the match, “I had to come back for the insurance,” a remark that drew laughter from the crowd and highlighted her enduring passion for the sport. Despite battling numerous injuries in recent years, Williams showed glimpses of the power and resilience that defined her prime years. With this win, Venus now joins a very exclusive list of players who have claimed main draw victories past the age of 45 — the only other being tennis icon Billie Jean King. Williams,

Venus Williams, 45, became the second-oldest woman after Martina Navratilova to win a tour-level singles match in professional tennis, delivering some of her familiar big serves and groundstrokes while beating Peyton Stearns — 22 years her junior — by a 6-3, 6-4 score at the DC Open.

India captain Shubman Gill on Tuesday slammed the delaying tactic used by the England openers towards end of day three of the Lord's Test, saying coming 90 seconds late to the crease was not within the spirt of the game. Speaking ahead of the fourth Test in Manchester, Gill ended the customary pre-match media interaction on an explosive note when asked about the on-field tensions during the third game. The question has been a constant from the English press to both the Indian and the home team players following the aggression shown by both parties at Lord's. "Yes, a lot of people have been talking about it, so let me just clear the air, for once and for all, the English batsmen on that day, they had seven minutes of play left, they were 90 seconds late to come to the crease, not 10, not 20, 90 seconds late," said a combative Gill.

Indian shuttler HS Prannoy saved five match points and clawed his way back from a game down to beat Japan's Koki Watanabe in the opening round of the China Open Super 1000 badminton tournament on Tuesday. The world No. 35 Prannoy pulled off a stunning 8-21, 21-16, 23-21 win against the 18th-ranked Watanabe. It was a tough day for Lakshya Sen, whose poor run continued as he squandered a one-game advantage to suffer a 21-14, 22-24, 11-21 loss to China's fifth seed Li Shi Feng.
"This point in my career, every win matters. I'm happy to be back on tour, small breaks happened here and there. The level of playing has gone really high and winning each round is getting tough day by day," Prannoy said after the win. "The average age has become 22- 23 in the men's singles all of a sudden. He beat a couple of strong players like Alexey Sarana and Jan-Krzysztof Duda (who helped him become world champion as a second).
Auditor flags massive financial irregularities in Pakistan Cricket Board

The Auditor General of Pakistan has exposed a number of financial irregularities running into millions of rupees, illegal appointments and award of contracts in the Pakistan Cricket Board.
The Audit report has mentioned several instance of irregularities including a payment of 63.39 million rupees to the police for meals for providing security during international matches. The report also mentioned unauthorized appointment of three coaches in the under -16 age group at the high performance centre in Karachi for a total salary of 5.4 million rupees, and irregular award of ticketing contracts without open competition. The PCB during the fiscal year June 2023 and July 2024 has had two separate chairmen in Zaka Ashraf and Mohsin Naqvi.
whose professional career spans three decades, said the match was about more than just a win.
“Every time I step on the court, it’s a statement — not just for me, but for anyone who’s been told they’re past their prime,” she said during the post-match interview.
The match wasn’t easy. After dropping the first set, Williams dug deep to push the contest into a decider, eventually overpowering her younger opponent. Her movement, although not as fluid as in her peak years, remained effective enough to control the rallies and force errors.
With this historic win, Venus Williams continues to inspire athletes of all ages. While her ranking has slipped in recent years, her impact on tennis remains immeasurable.
She hasn’t confirmed whether this will be her final season, but if this match is any indication, Venus still has fuel left in the tank.
Stokes Slams ICC Over WTC Points, Cites Asia Bias

]Ben Stokes has sent a firm message to India ahead of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, starting on Wednesday, stating that his team won't back down from any on-field confrontations.
“It's a massive series and heat will be shown. Have England been nice? Potentially. We won't purposely start anything, but we won't take any backward step,” Stokes said in a pre-match press conference. The series has already seen plenty of intensity with England leading 2-1, and Stokes admitted the side enjoyed a muchneeded break after their win at Lord's. “I was in my bed for two days… felt like I was in a longdistance relationship with my family,” he joked. “It was a good win and a nice break. Trump announces 'massive' trade deal with Japan

Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has welcomed Trump's announcement and confirmed that he has reached a deal with the US.
"Japan's tariff rate, which had been set to increase to 25% on reciprocal tariffs, was kept at 15%. This is the lowest figure to date among countries with trade surpluses with the US," Ishiba said on Wednesday.
Ishiba also confirmed US import levies on Japanese vehicles would be cut to 15% from 25%.
"The agreement does not include any reduction of tariffs on the Japanese side, including on agricultural products," he added.
"This is precisely the result of my consistent advocacy and strong lobbying of the US since I proposed 'investment over tariffs' to President Trump at our White House summit in February this year."

Russian Oil Giant to Invest Rs.70,000 Cr in India, Slams EU Sanctions
Russian oil giant Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy on Monday reaffirmed its plan to invest Rs 70,000 crore in downstream projects linked to its refinery, while denouncing the latest EU sanctions against it as unjust and harmful to India's interests.
A day after Rosneft condemned sanctions on its Indian unit, Nayara Energy, as unjustified, illegal, and a direct threat to India's energy security, Nayara in a statement said the restrictions "risk disrupting the uninterrupted supply of petroleum products that are essential to millions of Indian citizens and industries".
The European Union's 18th package of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine was approved last week with a view to weakening its revenue sources. Nayara Energy was one of the companies that was sanctioned.

US passes first major national crypto legislation

Lawmakers in the US have passed the country's first major national cryptocurrency legislation. It is a major milestone for the once fringe industry, which has been lobbying Congress over regulation for years and poured millions into last year's election, backing candidates that included Donald Trump. The bill sets up a regulatory regime for so-called stablecoins, a kind of cryptocurrency backed by assets seen as reliable, such as the dollar. Trump is expected to sign the legislation into law on Friday, after the House passed the bill on Thursday, joining the Senate, which had approved the measure last month.

China Advances in Innovative Solutions for Managing and Treating Type 2 Diabetes
China, home to the world's largest population, has made significant strides in tackling the burgeoning crisis of Type 2 diabetes, a chronic condition affecting over 140 million citizens. Recent developments in research, technology, and healthcare policy mark a new chapter in the country's efforts to improve management, treatment, and prevention of the disease.
A Growing Public Health Challenge
The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes in China has surged over the past two decades, driven by rapid urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, and dietary shifts toward high-calorie, processed foods. The Chinese government estimates that nearly 12% of adults are affected, with rates expected to rise further. This epidemic has imposed considerable strain on the healthcare system and economic productivity. Innovative Research and Breakthroughs
In response, Chinese scientists and medical institutions have accelerated research into novel therapies. Recent breakthroughs include the development of a new class of oral medications that target the gut microbiome to improve insulin sensitivity. A collaborative effort between Peking University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University resulted in a probiotic-based drug that modulates intestinal bacteria, showing promising results in early clinical trials. Moreover, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences have unveiled a gene-editing approach aimed at reducing genetic predispositions to insulin resistance. Using CRISPR technology, they are exploring ways to modify specific genes linked to metabolic dysfunctions associated with Type 2 diabetes, though these therapies are still in experimental stages.
Embracing Digital Health and AI
China is also pioneering the integration of digital health solutions. Several tech giants, including Alibaba Health and Tencent, have launched AI-powered platforms that enable real-time glucose monitoring and personalized treatment plans. These platforms leverage machine learning algorithms trained on vast datasets to predict blood sugar fluctuations and recommend dietary or medication adjustments.
In rural and underserved regions, drone delivery services are now transporting insulin and other medications to remote clinics, ensuring timely treatment access. Additionally, wearable devices are becoming more sophisticated, providing continuous glucose monitoring with user-friendly interfaces, empowering patients to manage their condition proactively.
Policy and Healthcare System Reforms
China's multifaceted approach—combining groundbreaking research, technological innovation, and policy reform—signals a transformative era in combating Type 2 diabetes. While challenges remain, the country's commitment to integrating science, technology, and public health initiatives offers hope for millions affected by this condition, paving the way toward a healthier future.

Weight loss tips
Skipping meals won’t help: It may seem logical to eat less, but skipping meals can slow metabolism and lead to overeating later. Instead, focus on well-balanced meals with protein, fiber, and healthy fats to keep your energy steady throughout the day.
Crash diets don’t work: Fad diets may promise quick results, but they’re often unrealistic and leave you feeling deprived. “Eliminating entire food groups can cause nutrient deficiencies and lead to muscle loss. Sustainable, gradual changes in diet are far more effective in the long run,” Dr Veshnavi warns. Do not mistake thirst for hunger: Mild dehydration can sometimes feel like hunger, leading to unnecessary snacking. Drinking enough water boosts metabolism and helps with digestion. Try having a glass of water before meals to prevent overeating.
Protein is your best friend: Protein helps preserve muscle mass and keeps you full longer. "A lack of protein in the diet can slow metabolism and lead to fatigue. Include lean sources like tofu, legumes, eggs, and fish in your meals,” says Dr Veshnavi.
Exercise alone won’t cut it: Working out is great, but overestimating calorie burn can lead to overeating. Weight loss is 80 percent diet and 20 percent exercise, so be mindful of portion sizes and food choices, even on workout days.
Recognizing the importance of prevention, the Chinese government has rolled out nationwide initiatives focusing on early screening and lifestyle interventions. The “Healthy China 2030” plan emphasizes integrating diabetes management into primary care, increasing awareness campaigns, and subsidizing essential

medications.
Furthermore, insurance coverage for innovative treatments, including some gene therapies and advanced biologics, has expanded, reducing financial barriers for patients. Public health campaigns encourage physical activity, healthy eating, and routine screenings, aiming to curb the rising tide of new cases.
Private Sector Engagement and International Collaboration
Private sector involvement remains vital. Several Chinese biotech firms have received government funding to accelerate the development of next-generation insulin analogs and cell-based therapies. Partnerships with international organizations facilitate knowledge exchange and clinical trials, ensuring that Chinese innovations meet global standards. For example, the China-US Diabetes Innovation Consortium, established last year, promotes joint research projects and clinical testing of novel therapeutics. These collaborations aim to bring cutting-edge treatments to market faster while addressing unique genetic and environmental factors in the Chinese population.
Challenges and Future Outlook
Despite these advancements, challenges persist. Ensuring equitable access to high-cost therapies, especially in rural areas, remains a concern. Moreover, long-term safety data for some novel approaches, such as gene editing, are still being gathered.
Nevertheless, experts remain optimistic. Dr. Li Wei, a leading endocrinologist at Beijing University Hospital, states, “The integration of biotechnology, digital health, and policy reforms positions China at the forefront of diabetes management. Continued innovation and equitable implementation can significantly reduce the disease's burden in the coming decades.”

The Saiyaara wave refuses to die down. Usually, there is a drop in collections on weekdays after a film performs exceptionally well on weekends. The advance booking for Monday is very strong and what has caught the eye is that YRF has gone against the norm by incorporating the Tuesday offer. Since April, theatres across the country have decided to sell tickets at discounted rates, that is, at Rs. 99/149/199, every Tuesday. Films that tend to do well in Week 1, like Raid 2 and Sitaare Zameen Par, didn’t opt for this offer. But YRF has refused to follow in the footsteps of the Ajay Devgn-starrer and Aamir Khan-starrer.

Kapil Sharma's Cafe Reopens After Canada Incident

Comedian Kapil Sharma’s Canadian café venture, Kap’s Cafe, has reopened its doors to the public after being targeted in a shooting incident earlier this month. Located in British Columbia, the café had come under attack on July 9, just days after its official launch. Confirming the reopening, Sharma reshared a post from the café’s official Instagram handle, which read: “We've missed you and are truly grateful for your continued love and support. With heartfelt thanks, we're opening our doors again – ready to welcome you back with warmth, comfort, and care. See you soon.” The heartfelt message signalled the team’s determination to move forward, despite the trauma of the incident. “We opened Kap’s Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community, and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversation. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock, but we are not giving up.”

Manoj Bajpayee Salutes Guru Naseeruddin Shah
How influenced are you by Naseeruddin Shah?
Naseer Sahab has been instrumental in shaping me into the actor I am today. During my theatre days, just after passing out of Delhi University—and even before that—we were constantly watching his films, along with those of Om Puri Sahab, Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, and so many Malayalam and Bengali filmmakers like Satyajit Ray and Mr. Manohar Rao. It was through their work that we educated ourselves. It was then that I realized how deeply Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri’s performances would influence me.
What, according to you, is the great takeaway from Naseer’s performances? What I thought acting was—my entire definition of it—changed completely after watching Naseer Bhai. His work left me restless, desperate to learn. I suddenly found myself clueless, standing at zero. Just watching his performances, trying to understand his approach, taught me so much. I began applying those techniques to my own theatre work.
So Naseer prompted you to extend your performing skills?
Absolutely. I started attending classes with the best directors in Delhi theatre. I would talk to them endlessly about Naseer Sahab and Om Puri Sahab, and their differing approaches to acting. But above all, I realized that here was a man who taught the country that acting is a serious business. It cannot be taken for granted. It’s not just about delivering lines beautifully or pronouncing them correctly.

Your final thoughts on Naseer?
He changed the way we look at acting and performance. His work in Sparsh, Ijaazat, Paar, Mandi, and even that unforgettable one scene in Ardh Satya, has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. Thank you, Naseer Bhai, for existing, for teaching, and for inspiring generations. I consider myself privileged to have known you and learned from you.

Amitabh to Abhishek: "Never Give Up"

Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan wrote a touching message in praise of his son, Abhishek Bachchan, who has recently marked 25 years in the film industry.
“The core of life is to NEVER GIVE UP .. keep fighting until the very end…you might win or you might lose…BUT WHAT MATTERS IS THAT YOU FOUGHT. The ‘pluckiest’…loser commands more respect than the ‘so called winner’…because the pluckiest loser is always remembered by the phrase – ‘he fought and almost WON’. That carries a deeper sense of achievement than the monetary benchmarks of commercial success…25 years !! that’s a remarkable accomplishment…comparing with others is a sign of weakness... the outcomes speak louder than any kind of ‘ness’,” the post began. He added, “You, Abhishek, have always and consistently measured yourself against your own self...not many are capable of that...And with each passing day, I continue to learn more and more…People often say you’ve done enough, now it’s time to sit back and relax…NO... stepping back is a surrender in life – it means giving up…and one must NEVER GIVE UP.”
Actor Kalki Koechlin has candidly addressed her encounters with the casting couch, highlighting both the subtle and blatant instances of sexual harassment that continue to exist in the film industry
Reveals Casting Couch Experience
In a recent interview, Kalki Koechlin highlights the ongoing issue of harassment in the film industry.
Kalki shared that such experiences, often overlooked or treated as normal, can have a deep and enduring psychological effect.
In the interview, Kalki recounted an incident from her student days in London when she attended the Cannes Film Festival as a promotional representative for Nokia phones. “One was in Cannes. I wasn’t even an actor yet, just a student working as a promo girl selling Nokia phones. An Indian producer, who knew someone connected to my mother, invited me to his film screening. Later, he asked me out to dinner. When I inquired about work opportunities, he made it very clear that I had to ‘be with him’ for that to happen,” she recalled. Kalki also described a second unsettling encounter that took place in Mumbai after she had entered the film industry. While auditioning for a major project, a producer made suggestive remarks under the guise of professional interest.
“Other time it happened when I went for an audition here for a film, and the producer said, ‘You want to do this film? That’s great, but I need to get to know you because it’s a big launch. So it was basically the same, like, ‘Come out, let’s go out for dinner,’ So then again I was like sorry, I don’t want to waste your time or mine,” Kalki recalled. Kalki Koechlin was last seen in the Tamil romantic action thriller Nesippaya, directed by Vishnuvardhan and starring Akash Murali and Aditi Shankar. She will next appear in the English-language film Emma and Angel, adding to her varied filmography.
Aamir Khan Denies Meghalaya Murder Film Rumours

A bizarre rumour about Aamir Khan’s next cinematic project has been making the rounds on several entertainment portals. According to these speculative reports, Aamir is planning to make a film based on the notorious Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, in which a woman named Sonam, allegedly with the help of her lover, murdered her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon.
However, when contacted for clarification, Aamir Khan flatly denied any such plans. “There is absolutely no truth to it,” the actor said, dismissing the claim entirely. He also expressed bafflement over how such rumours gain traction. “I honestly don’t know where these stories start,” he remarked. Currently basking in the success of his most recent release, Sitaare Zameen Par, which has successfully cracked the box office code, Aamir is now preparing for his next screen appearance. This time, he’ll be seen sharing the screen with none other than superstar Rajinikanth. “Mine is a cameo in a Tamil action thriller directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj,” Aamir revealed. “I can’t say much about my role, but I come in at a crucial point in the plot.” With the rumour mill running wild and Aamir’s slate already looking packed, fans can put the Meghalaya murder speculation to rest.

Subhash Ghai on Saiyaara: Big Stars Don’t Ensure Success

Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai has expressed his admiration for the success of Saiyaara, emphasizing the importance of storytelling over star-driven casts. Known for directing iconic films like Pardes and Taal, Ghai shared his thoughts on the changing dynamics of cinema and praised Saiyaara for proving that compelling narratives continue to resonate with audiences.
In a social media post shared on Sunday, Ghai commended the film for showcasing how heartfelt storytelling, the fresh pairing of Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, and balanced production values can outperform exaggerated marketing and inflated star salaries. He wrote, “When a new star cast film creates a wave at box office. It sends us a clear msg to investors n producers not to make an over budget film more than a good story needs - not to invest on main actors more than your production cost - no money spend on stars whims - no extra spend on marketing stunts. Audience is surely ready to accept a good heart warming film with right casting all over India ????????.”
The Taal director highlighted that audiences are fully prepared to welcome well-crafted, emotionally engaging films featuring the right cast—be it newcomers or seasoned actors. He added, “My heartiest congratulations to Adi Chopra n Mohit Suri for proving the fundamental principles of film making a Hindi commercial cinema and made a film Saiyaara a history today.
Mamata Wishes SRK Speedy Recovery After Injury

Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan has reportedly sustained a back injury while filming an action sequence for his upcoming film King. The project, helmed by director Siddharth Anand, marks a significant collaboration between the superstar and his daughter, Suhana Khan, who plays the lead role. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to social media to express her concern for the actor. Posting on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, July 19, she wrote, “Reports regarding my brother Shah Rukh Khan sustaining muscular injuries during shooting make me worried. Wish him speedy recovery.”
Son of Sardaar 2 Postponed to August 1

A source told the reason behind this move, “Yash Raj Films’ Saiyaara has taken a surprise gigantic opening on the day of its release, July 18. The reports of the film are extremely positive, and hence, it will do better on Saturday than Friday. Meanwhile, Sunday will be huge and it’ll also stay strong in the weekdays and the second week as well. In such a scenario, having a big film like Son Of Sardaar 2 just a week later will not be good for the business for both films. Hence, Ajay Devgn, Jio Studios and others took the decision of moving a week ahead with their film’s release.”

Judge Moves Supreme Court Over Ex-CJI Impeachment Plan

New Delhi:
Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma, who is at the centre of a controversy over the alleged recovery of a huge amount of cash at his official bungalow in New Delhi earlier this year, has challenged an in-house inquiry report by a Supreme Court-constituted committee that recommended initiation of his impeachment. The development came days before the Monsoon session of Parliament, during which the Centre was likely to introduce the impeachment motion against the High Court judge.
In a writ petition in the top court, Mr Varma challenged the suggestion made by former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, and accused the three-member panel that was set up on the latter's order of drawing adverse conclusions without giving him a full and fair hearing, sources said.
Trump Threatens WSJ Over "Fake" Epstein Letter Report

United States:
US President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to sue The Wall Street Journal after it published a story about an alleged off-color letter written by him to late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein that featured a drawing of a naked woman. The Journal story, which quickly reverberated around the US capital, says the note to Epstein bearing Trump's signature was part of a collection of notes for Epstein's 50th birthday in 2003. The newspaper says it reviewed the letter but did not print an image. "The Editor of The Wall Street Journal... was told directly by (White House press secretary) Karoline Leavitt, and by President Trump, that the letter was a FAKE," Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social network.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Bihar and West Bengal on Friday, where he will launch a range of developmental projects worth over Rs 12,000 crore. After giving a major thrust to infrastructure development in both states, PM Modi will also address public gatherings in Motihari (Bihar) and Durgapur (West Bengal),
respectively. Trump Orders Release of More Epstein Documents

US President Donald Trump says he's ordered the justice department to produce some additional documents related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
"Based on the ridiculous amount of publicity given to Jeffrey Epstein, I have asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to produce any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony, subject to Court approval," Trump said in a social media post. It's unclear whether Trump is authorising the public release of these documents or when that could come - though such action would typically require the approval of a court.
US Labels Pahalgam Attack Group as Foreign Terrorist Organisation

US Department of State on Thursday designated The Resistance Front (TRF), group behind the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, as a terrorist organisation.
The US designated The Resistance Front, an offshoot of the Pakistani terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, as a "foreign terrorist organisation" over the April 22 Pahalgam attack.
In a statement issued by the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the statement acknowledged the fact that the organisation claimed responsibility for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu
and Kashmir which claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
The US, therefore, accorded the TRF as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). "Today, the Department of State is adding The Resistance Front (TRF) as a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). TRF, a Lashkare-Tayyiba (LeT) front and proxy, claimed responsibility for the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack which killed 26 civilians. This was the deadliest attack on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks conducted by LeT. TRF has also claimed responsibility for several attacks against Indian security forces, including most recently in 2024," the statement read.
Indian-Origin Businessman, 3 Police Chiefs Charged With US Visa Fraud
An Indian-origin businessman and police chiefs from three Louisiana cities have been charged with visa fraud in the US, accused of fabricating crimes to help people illegally obtain visas meant for crime victims.
Chandrakant “Lala” Patel allegedly paid police officials to stage fake armed robbery cases and list individuals he nominated as victims, allowing them to apply for “U Visas.” These visas permit victims of serious crimes to stay in the US to assist law enforcement in investigations or prosecutions. According to federal prosecutors, Patel paid $5,000 per person to police chiefs in Oakdale, Forest Hill, and Glenmora. A federal grand jury indicted Patel, Oakdale Police Chief Chad Doyle, Forest Hill Chief Glynn Dixon, Glenmora

Chief Tebo Onishea, and Marshal Michael Slaney on charges of fraud and conspiracy.
Court documents cite 25 individuals— many sharing Patel’s last name—falsely listed as crime victims. Investigators traced $230,000 and property worth $51,000 linked to Patel in the scheme,In a related state-level development, Chad Doyle’s wife, Allison Doyle, was arrested on state corruption charges,
to claim visas meant for crime victims, officials said on Wednesday.
though not federally indicted. The case echoes a similar scam involving Indian-origin men Rambhai Patel and Balwinder Singh, who admitted in May to staging armed robberies in Massachusetts to fraudulently secure U Visas. They charged up to $20,000 per fake robbery, recording the events to support false police reports. Both await sentencing. Authorities say such fraud schemes exploit protections meant for genuine victims and undermine the US immigration system.

Illinois Tax Preparer Sentenced in $3.6M Pandemic Loan Scam

CHICAGO, IL- An Illinois man was sentenced yesterday to 42 months in prison for his role in a scheme to fraudulently obtain over $3.6 million in small business loans under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Eco-nomic Security (CARES) Act Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program administered by the Small Business Administration (SBA).
According to court documents, Farooq Khan, 31, of Chicago, owned and operated Hannan Tax Services, a tax preparation company in Chicago. Between May 2020 and October 2021, Khan prepared and submitted at least 30 fraudulent PPP and EIDL loan applications on behalf of non-operational companies that did not qualify for the programs. He falsified information, including employee counts and tax records, to secure the loans.
Farooq Khan, 31 Submitted Over 30 Bogus PPP and EIDL Requests for Nonexistent Firms
As a result, approximately $3.6 million was fraudulently disbursed by the SBA and PPP lenders. Khan also attempted to obtain an additional $588,900 in EIDL loans for other nonexistent companies, which were not funded. Of the fraudulent loan proceeds, he personally pocketed approximately $1.2 million.
Khan pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud on Feb. 19. In addition to his prison sentence, he was or-dered to pay $3,645,104 in restitution.
The announcement was made by Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti of the Justice De-partment’s Criminal Division, Special Agent in Charge Douglas S. DePodesta of the FBI Chicago Field Office, and Special Agent in Charge Matthew J. Scarpino of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Chicago.

N.J. Imam Granted Relief From Deportation as as Courts Debate Green Card Rules

PASSAIC, NJ- A federal appeals court has ruled that the U.S. government violated the law when it attempt-ed to revoke the green card of a prominent New Jersey imam nearly a year after the legal deadline had passed. In a 2-1 decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit sided with Mohammad Qatanani, the long-time imam of the Islamic Center of Passaic County. The precedential ruling not only blocks his deportation but also establishes a new legal limit on how and when the government can revisit permanent residency decisions. Qatanani was granted lawful permanent residency on April 27, 2020, after an immigration judge ruled in his favor for the second time. The judge found the government’s evidence—primarily Israeli military docu-ments—unreliable and possibly obtained through torture.
The court also discredited testimony from feder-al agents and noted strong support for Qatanani from local law enforcement and interfaith leaders. Under federal regulations, the Department of Homeland Security had 30 days—until May 27—to appeal the decision. However, the department missed that deadline and instead filed a motion for a late appeal on August 12, more than three months later. The Board of Immigration Appeals accepted the case anyway, invoking a rarely used regulation allowing it to “self-certify” a case for review.

72% of Anti-AAPI Hate Crimes in California Go Unnoticed by Law Enforcement
HiIndia Newsdesk
SACRAMENTO, CA —
Nearly half of all Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) adults in Califor-nia—48%— reported experiencing hate in 2024, according to a new report from Stop AAPI Hate. This figure mirrors 2023 levels and comes amid a volatile election year marked by rising anti-immigrant rhetoric.

The report also revealed that most victims stayed silent: 31% of those who experienced hate told no one, and 72% never reported their incidents to any formal authority. The main reasons for not reporting includ-ed believing the incident was not serious enough (68%), thinking reporting would not change anything (68%), and concerns that it would take too much time (53%).
Harassment accounted for the largest share of hate acts (44%), followed by institutional discrimination (21%).
Most incidents occurred online (39%) or in public places (37%), with 54% of respondents saying they were targeted not only for their race or ethnicity but also due to gender, religion, language, or immigration status—reflecting the prevalence of intersectional hate.
The report’s release comes as AAPI communities in California face heightened federal scrutiny. In recent

months, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained several AAPI immigrants, and the U.S. Department of Justice has cut public safety grants to multiple AAPI-focused organizations.
Manjusha Kulkarni, co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate, criticized the federal government’s approach, noting its disproportionate impact on California, where 63% of Asian residents and 33% of Pacific Islanders are for-eign-born.
“The Trump administration’s xenophobic mass deportation operations and attacks on education and public safety
funding inflict profound harm on AAPI Californians,”
Kulkarni said.
“As the federal government continues to escalate its attacks, now is the time for California’s leaders to double down on investments to keep the people they serve safe from hate and violence.”
One 2024 incident cited in the report highlights the severity of anti-immigrant sentiment: an Indian woman at a playground described how a young man stared at her and asked his friend, “Hey, do you have a gun?” before adding, “Hey, do you have a bomb?”—a verbal assault based on the mistaken assumption that she was Muslim.
The report urges California to sustain and expand investments made under the 2021 Asian and Pacific Is-lander Equity Budget. Cynthia Choi, also a co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate, said the recommendations offer a clear roadmap to combat hate, including legislative action, support for small businesses, and renewed funding for frontline organizations.
“These are not abstract proposals,” Choi emphasized. “They are essential to ensuring safe and inclusive environments for AAPI communities now and in the future.”
FBI Foils Teen’s Alleged Plot Against Illinois Islamic Center

CHICAGO, IL . -A Lombard teen has been charged with plotting a terrorist attack at a Glendale Heights Is-lamic Center, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office announced. According to court documents, the 16-year-old entered the Islamic Education Center in Glendale Heights and recorded religious services to identify potential locations to detonate an explosive.
On July 12, he al-legedly concealed a handgun on his person. The teen faces one count of unlawful possession of a firearm and one count of attempted terrorism. He remains in custody pending his next court appearance. “An attempted act of terrorism, as alleged in this case, spreads fear, divides communities, and undermines the rule of law just as much as a completed act of terrorism,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. “These allegations are extremely serious and will not be tolerated in DuPage County.” “Thanks to exceptional law enforcement efforts and coordination, a violent terrorist attack on American soil was thwarted,” added Andrew S. Boutros, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. The next court hearing is set for Aug. 4.
Indian American Doctor Accused of Running Opioid Scheme for Sex and Defrauding Medicaid
NEWARK, NJ – A New Jersey physician has been charged with illegally distributing opioids in exchange for sexual favors and defrauding the state’s Medicaid program.
Ritesh Kalra, 51, of Secaucus, faces a five-count federal complaint, including three counts of distributing controlled substances outside the scope of professional practice and two counts of healthcare fraud. Prosecutors allege Kalra operated a “pill mill” out of his Fair Lawn medical office between January 2019 and February 2025.
According to court filings, Kalra issued more than 31,000 oxycodone prescriptions during that peri-od—sometimes writing over 50 in a single day—often without medical justification. Former employees told investigators that multiple female patients reported being sexually assaulted or inappropriately touched during appointments. Some alleged Kalra demanded oral sex and other sexual acts in exchange for prescriptions. One patient reported being repeatedly assaulted, including being forcibly subjected to anal sex during visits.
Prosecutors further claim Kalra prescribed opioids to at least one patient

who was incarcerated at the time, without conducting an examination or having any direct contact.
In addition to the drug charges, Kalra is accused of submitting false claims to New Jersey Medicaid for in-person visits and therapy sessions that never occurred.
Investigators say his electronic records con-tained fabricated visit dates and
identical notes that omitted even basic vital signs.
Kalra was arrested and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge André M. Espinosa in Newark on July 17. He was released to home confinement on a $100,000 unsecured bond and is barred from practicing medicine, prescribing

drugs, or operating a medical office while the case proceeds.
“Physicians hold a profound responsibility, but as alleged, Dr. Kalra abused his position to fuel addiction, exploit vulnerable patients for sex, and defraud New Jersey’s public healthcare program,” said U.S. Attor-ney Alina Habba. FBI Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy called the allegations a “severe breach of patient trust.” She added, “As alleged, he used patients for his sexual gratification and, in the process, defrauded the state of New Jersey.” Each count of distributing opioids carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. The healthcare fraud charges are punishable by up to 10 years in prison and fines of $250,000 or twice the amount gained or lost.

ICE Moves to Keep Millions of Immigrants Detained Without Bond Hearings

WASHINGTON, DC- The Trump administration has significantly restricted the ability of immigrants facing deportation to be released from detention, marking a major escalation of its immigration crackdown. By reinterpreting a 1990s immigration law, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) now directs officials to argue in court that detainees who entered the U.S. illegally are ineligible for bond. Previously, mandatory detention applied mainly to recent border-crossers and noncitizens convicted of certain crimes. Immigrants living unlawfully in the U.S. for years could seek bond hearings to convince judges they weren’t flight risks and could fight deportation outside detention. Under the new policy, release is only possible if ICE grants parole — not by order of immigration judges.
The Department of Homeland Security
(DHS), in coordination with the Justice Department, revised its legal stance on detention, according to a source who read portions of the memo outlining the change. The memo cites Section 235 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, requiring detention of all noncitizens en-tering unlawfully.
ICE confirmed the policy shift saying all “aliens seeking to enter unlawfully… shall be treated equally un-der the law.”
DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said President Trump and Secretary Kristi Noem are en-forcing the law “to keep America safe,” adding that the recently signed One Big Beautiful Bill Act provides $75 billion for immigration enforcement, enabling ICE to hire 10,000 officers and expand detention capac-ity to over 100,000 beds.
Greg Chen of the American Immigration Lawyers Association warned the automatic detention rule could deprive “hundreds of thousands” of liberty unnecessarily.

$61,932 Scholarship Despite F-1 Visa Denied in 2-Question Interview

REDLANDS, CA- A Bangladeshi student, awarded a generous $61,932 annual scholarship from the Uni-versity of Redlands in California, was recently denied an F-1 student visa after a surprisingly brief interview at the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka on July 15, 2025. Despite presenting strong academic credentials and a solid financial plan, the visa officer reportedly asked only two questions and did not review the applicant’s I-20 form. After the scholarship, the student faced just a $750 tuition deficit, with $75,000 in family savings and an annual parental income of $50,000 ear-marked for remaining expenses.
Describing the experience, the student said the officer first asked how he planned to fund his studies. “After my 99% tuition scholarship, my parents—who have saved $75,000— are sponsoring me,” he replied. He also noted that his father, an assistant
professor at a government college for 28 years, runs a private coaching center. The second and final question concerned post-graduation plans. The student explained his goal of returning to Bangladesh to establish a data analysis company focused on tackling challenges in traffic, healthcare, and environmental monitoring. However, the officer issued a 214(b) refusal notice shortly af-terward, ending the interview abruptly. The rejection has left the student confused, especially since the officer did not examine his financial doc-uments or I-20 form. The case has raised questions about the subjectivity of visa interviews, even for well-prepared and funded applicants. Now, with orientation at the University of Redlands just 40 days away, the student is considering reapplying within 20–25 days. He is seeking guidance on addressing the previous denial on the DS-160 form and how to strengthen his case.

Justice Department Reaches New Settlement to Protect U.S. Workers
HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHINGTON, DC- The Justice Department announced today that it has reached a settlement with H2A Complete II Inc., a Mississippi-based company, to resolve claims that it violated the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) by favoring H-2A visa holders over U.S. workers for agricultural jobs.
This marks the second settlement since the Department re-launched its Protecting U.S. Workers Initiative. Originally launched during the first Trump Administration, the initiative investigates and enforces actions against employers who unlawfully discriminate against U.S. workers in favor of temporary visa holders.
Under the settlement, H2A Complete II Inc. will pay $25,000 in civil penalties, undergo training, revise its hiring policies, and refrain from imposing excessive experience requirements designed to exclude U.S. ap-plicants.
“American workers seeking jobs in their own country deserve priority,” said Attorney General Pamela Bon-di. “The Department of Justice will continue

South Asian Elected Lawmakers Fight Back Against Trump Crackdowns

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown on immigration, slashes social programs, and curtails the role of federal agencies, a group of South Asian American state lawmakers are stepping up with legislative efforts to protect vulnerable communities and preserve local autonomy. In a statement released this week, the political advocacy group Impact highlighted the work of South Asian elected officials confronting the administration’s policies at the state level. The group underscored the importance of down-ballot races, noting that state and local leaders often serve as the last line of defense when federal institutions are under strain.
Among those leading the charge is Georgia State Senator Sheikh Rahman, who is drafting legislation to prohibit state law enforcement from assisting in the wrongful deportation of U.S. citizens—an issue that has grown more urgent amid heightened immigration enforcement.
In Wisconsin, State Representative Renuka Mayadev has introduced the “Protect Wisconsinites Package,” a suite of bills designed to shield state funds from federal overreach. One proposal in the package calls for withholding state tax payments to the federal government in protest of Trump-era budget cuts. Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, State Representative Tarik Khan successfully passed bipartisan legislation making it easier for nonprofits to donate food. The measure is expected to provide critical support to more than 1.2 million Pennsylvanians facing food insecurity, particularly those impacted by reductions in federal SNAP benefits.
“These leaders aren’t backing down,” Impact said in its statement. “They’re showing that statehouses can be powerful sites of resistance.”
Indian-Origin Man Avoids Jail for Filming Patients Secretly

Prosecutors revealed the cameras recorded hundreds of individuals, including at least one child. Investigators were able to identify five victims.
MINEOLA, NY – A Brooklyn man has avoided prison after pleading guilty to secretly recording patients in bathroom facilities at a Long Island sleep center.
Sanjai Syamaprasad, 47, a former sleep technician at the Northwell Health Sleep Disorders Center in Great Neck, admitted to installing hidden cameras—disguised as smoke detectors—in staff and patient bath-rooms between July 2023 and April 2024. He also placed a device in a public restroom at STARS Rehabilita-tion, located in the same building.
Syamaprasad pleaded guilty in Nassau County Court to five counts of Unlawful Surveillance in the Second Degree and two counts of Tampering with Physical Evidence, all class E felonies. He is scheduled to return to court on September 15, when he is expected to receive five years of probation. Prosecutors revealed the cameras recorded hundreds of individuals, including at least one child.
Investiga-tors were able to identify five victims.
District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly condemned the plea deal, calling the outcome “inadequate” given the severity of the crimes.
“This case deserved jail time,” Donnelly said. “It wasn’t a one-off. It was night after night, victim after vic-tim. This was a massive violation of people’s privacy and rights.”
Donnelly had pushed for consecutive prison sentences of one to three years for each of the seven felony counts.
According to the investigation, Syamaprasad would retrieve the cameras after his shifts and download the recordings. When Northwell Health reported the matter in April 2024, investigators executed a search warrant at his Brooklyn home.
During the search, authorities discovered Syamaprasad had attempted to destroy evidence— discarding a hidden camera and a broken SD card in a trash can at a CVS pharmacy. Detectives later recovered the de-vice from a dumpster behind the store. He was arrested the same day.

Washington State University Honors Varinder Bhalla with Top Alumni Achievement Award
NEW YORK, NY- In a deeply meaningful and long-awaited moment, Varinder Bhalla was presented with the Alumni Achievement Award—the highest honor bestowed by Washington State University (WSU)—54 years after graduating and 30 years after first being nominated for the prestigious distinction.
Mariah Maki, Executive Director of the WSU Alumni Association, flew in from Washington to personally present the award at an exclusive dinner reception hosted by the university in New York City. The event was attended by members of the New York Chapter of the WSU Alumni Association, including Vice Presi-dent Meghann Cherzan and Fran Rowley, who graduated alongside Bhalla in the Class of 1971.
The WSU Alumni Achievement Award is a rare distinction, granted to fewer than 0.2% of alumni since its inception in 1969. Out of more than 250,000 graduates, fewer than 500 individuals have received this hon-or over the past century. Notable recipients include Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Paul Allen.
“In recognition of your outstanding service and humanitarian efforts as Founder and President of the AWB Food Bank, as well as your numerous philanthropic endeavors, we honor your deep compassion and un-wavering dedication to the underprivileged,” said Director Maki. “From New Delhi to New York, your commitment to improving lives reflects the highest

She was ceremoniously adopted into the WSU Cougar Family and recognized for her extraordinary commitment with the distinguished status of Honorary WSU Family Member.
In his emotional acceptance remarks, Bhalla said: “I may not have made it back to Pullman to receive this honor all those years ago, but having WSU come all the way to me 50 years later feels like a full-circle moment—one that fills my heart with gratitude and deep emotion. “Washington State University gave me more than an education—it gave me purpose. This recognition re-connects me with my roots and reminds me that giving back is the truest form of success.”
Last year, Bhalla was also honored with a United States Congressional Award for his philanthropic service. His contributions include traveling to a remote village in Gujarat to donate a motorboat for 125 school-children who previously had to swim across a turbulent river to reach school; providing warm clothes and school supplies to children attending classes in freezing temperatures after their school roof collapsed; launching an eye camp in his hometown in Punjab, inspired by his father Chaman Lal Bhalla’s legacy, and providing free prescription glasses to more than 1,200 individuals without access to vision care; and spon-soring hand pumps in villages lacking drinking water. Bhalla also pioneered the first celebration of India’s centuries-old Dussehra in the USA, complete with 50foot tall effigies, attracting over 50,000 spectators in support of the AWB Food Bank. Maki concluded by reiterating an invitation for Bhalla to return to WSU so that “your legacy may inspire current students and remind them that what they learn today can become the foundation for a life of pur-pose and service.”
Indian Astrologer Charged in $62,000 Scam

NEW YORK, NY – Hemanth Kumar Muneppa, 33, charged with defrauding elderly woman of over $60,000 through astrology scam Hemanth Kumar Muneppa, 33, allegedly used astrology and spiritual claims to defraud a 68-year-old woman out of more than $60,000 by promising fortune-telling and “evil spirit removal” services.
According to Nassau County police, the scheme began on July 3 when the victim visited “Anjana Ji,” a Hicksville business offering astrology services. Muneppa initially charged her $20,000
for a spiritual reading and, days later, demanded an additional $42,000 for further rituals and spirit removal. He reportedly drove the woman to her bank to withdraw the funds. Suspicious bank staff alerted authori-ties, leading to Muneppa’s arrest in the bank parking lot on July 17.
Muneppa is charged with grand larceny and fortune-telling. Under New York law, charging money for for-tune-telling or services like exorcising spirits is illegal unless offered solely for entertainment. Nassau County police urge anyone with information or who may have been victimized to call 516-573-6200.

$14.75M Settlement Reached in Maryland IT False Claims Case

ROCKVILLE, MD- Hill ASC Inc., doing business as Hill Associates of Rockville, Maryland, agreed to pay at least $14.75 million to resolve allegations of violating the False Claims Act in connection with a General Services Administration (GSA) contract for information technology (IT) services.
The settlement concerns a contract through which Hill provided IT services to federal agencies from 2018 to 2023 under GSA’s Multiple Award Schedule (MAS) program, which allows agencies to procure commer-cial goods and services. It resolves claims that Hill billed federal agencies for IT personnel lacking the re-quired experience or education under the contract. Additionally, it addresses allegations that Hill submitted claims for highly adaptive cybersecurity services and other offerings outside the MAS contract scope—despite not having passed required technical evaluations. Hill was also alleged to have charged unapproved fees, failed to disclose prompt payment discount information, and included unallowable in-centive compensation in a cost submission tied to a new contract proposal.
Under the agreement, Hill will pay $14.75 million, with potential additional payments based on certain fi-nancial contingencies. The settlement reflects the company’s ability to pay.
“IT contractors must bill the government properly,” said Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate of the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “We will continue to hold companies accountable for failing to meet their contractual obligations.”
GSA Deputy Inspector General Robert C. Erickson added, “Federal agencies deserve exactly what they pay for—no less.” Treasury Deputy Inspector General Loren Sciurba and TIGTA Acting Special Agent Jessica Cipolla emphasized the importance of integrity in federal contracting and thanked all agencies involved in the investigation.
The resolution resulted from collaboration between the Justice Department’s Civil Division, GSA’s Office of Inspector General, Treasury OIG, and TIGTA.
The claims remain allegations, and there has been no deter-mination of liability.
Over 420,000 New Jersey Families Could Lose Federal Aid, Report Warns
NEW JERSEY- Access to food resources for hundreds of thousands of families in New Jersey could soon change dramatically.
The federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) supports millions nationwide by helping lowincome households buy groceries with benefits cards. In New Jersey alone, 800,000 people rely on SNAP—60% of them children or seniors. The program also provides access to family-friendly perks, such as discounted museum admission and childcare resources. However, the New Jersey Department of Health warns the program’s sustainability is at risk. President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” signed on July 4, introduces major tax cuts and policy changes, including new SNAP requirements. States must now share more costs with the federal government, potentially leaving 424,000 NJ families at risk of losing some or all SNAP benefits, according to the Urban

Aries
Institute. To main-tain current coverage, the state would need to raise its budget by $100–$300 million.
Key changes include:
• Thrifty Food Plan: Caps on future benefit increases and limits for large households.
• Work Requirements: Extends time limits for able-bodied adults ages 55–64, parents of teens, and veter-ans; limits state waivers to areas with 10%+ unemployment.
• Matching Funds: States with high payment error rates must cover 5–15% of benefits.
• Eligibility: Restricts SNAP to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents; excludes refugees and asylees without residency.
New Jersey’s Department of Human Services warns counties may need to raise $78 million annually to offset federal cuts. Families with children could lose $85/month in food aid; households without children could lose $182/month.

Stop Guessing, Start Growing: 5 Ways NRS AI Product Recommendations Boost Your Store
The National Retail Solutions (NRS) AI Product Recommendations feature puts data-driven inventory in-sights directly into your POS system. Based on your specific location and store type, this feature analyzes what sells in your area and delivers personalized recommendations.
Every store owner knows the feeling: staring at shelves of products that won't sell while customers ask for items you don't carry. You ordered based on what worked last season, what your competitor stocks, or simply what the sales rep suggested. Meanwhile, money sits trapped in inventory that collects dust instead of profits.
For independent retailers, inventory decisions often come down to gut feelings and educated guesses. This approach leads to missed opportunities, wasted capital, and frustrated customers who take their business elsewhere. But what if your POS system could tell you exactly what products your neighborhood wants to buy?
The National Retail Solutions (NRS) AI Product Recommendations feature puts data-driven inventory in-sights directly into your POS system. Based on your specific location and store type, this feature analyzes what sells in your area and delivers personalized recommendations. No extra software, no complicated reports—just practical guidance built into the system you already use.
Here are five concrete ways this feature can improve your store's performance.
1. Reduce Dead Inventory and Free Up Cash
Dead inventory is a silent profit killer. Every slowmoving product on your shelf represents money that could be working for your business. Store owners often hold onto these items, hoping they'll eventually sell, but hope doesn't pay the bills.
The AI Product Recommendations feature analyzes local buying patterns to identify products that are in high demand in your area. Instead of guessing which items might work, you get specific suggestions based on real sales data from similar stores in your neighborhood.
Every dollar trapped in dead stock is a dollar that can't be invested in products your customers actually want.
2. Discover High-Profit Products You're Missing
Sometimes, the most profitable opportunities are

hiding in plain sight. While you stock the usual items, your competitors might be making better margins on products you've never considered.
The NRS AI recommendations feature shows you what's selling successfully in stores like yours, particularly highlighting high-margin items you don't currently carry. These weekly updates highlight products that align with your customer base but may not have been on your radar yet.
The best products for your store are ones you'd never want to order on your own.
3. Stay Ahead of Neighborhood Trends
Customer preferences shift constantly, especially in diverse urban neighborhoods. What sold well last year might sit on shelves today, while new trends emerge faster than you can track them.
The AI Product Recommendations uses locationbased analysis to spot these changes early. The system recognizes when buying patterns shift in your specific area, whether due to demographic changes, season-al preferences, or emerging product categories.
Being first to stock trending items means capturing customers before they develop loyalty elsewhere.
4. Make Confident Ordering Decisions
Ordering inventory shouldn't feel like gambling. Yet many store owners describe ordering day as their most stressful task, worried about overstocking items
that won't sell or running out of popular products. The NRS AI Product Recommendations feature removes this anxiety by providing clear data on what works. Along with product suggestions, you receive recommended pricing based on the market in your ar-ea. Access these insights directly through your NRS Merchant Portal or the My NRS Store mobile app, making informed decisions whether you're at the counter or meeting with suppliers.
Data-backed decisions replace stressful guessing games with strategic planning.
5. Compete Smarter Against Chains
Chain stores employ entire teams to analyze sales data and optimize inventory. As an independent retailer, you're competing against their resources with just your own experience and intuition.
NRS AI Product Recommendations levels this playing field by providing enterprise-level insights at small business prices. While chains follow national planograms, your AI product recommendations are custom-ized for your exact location and customer base.
Your size becomes an advantage when you can respond to local needs faster than any chain.
Growing Your Business with Smart Decisions
These five improvements—reducing dead inventory, discovering profitable products, tracking trends, ordering confidently, and competing strategically—add up to real business growth. Each recommendation you implement moves your store closer to what your customers actually want to buy.
Success in today's retail environment isn't about lucky guesses or following what worked for someone else. It's about using the right information to make smart decisions for your specific store. Your next bestselling product is waiting. Access your AI Product Recommendations feature through the NRS Merchant Portal or the My NRS Store app today.

New York business community divided on Zohran Mamdani

Businesses in New York City seem to have a dilemma when it comes to the city’s mayoral pick. Following Andrew Cuomo’s announcement that he would stay in the race as an independent after losing to Zohran Mamdani, New York-based CEOs have yet to coalesce behind either the former governor or incumbent Eric Adams in their bid to defeat Mamdani, a Democratic socialist who won the primary in June.
“I can only vote for one candidate in November, and that decision won’t be made until closer to Election Day,” said Jared Epstein, president of real-estate owner and developer Aurora Capital Associates, in an email. “Until then, like nearly every one of the 20,000 contacts in my phone, my position is simple: ABZ – ‘Anyone But Zohran.'”

Keeping Gandhi’s Vision Alive: Honoring Dr. Sriram Sonty’s Lifelong Dedication
CHICAGO, IL – On July 13, 2025, the Matrix Club in Naperville, Illinois, became a gathering place for heartfelt remembrance as friends, family, and colleagues came together to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Sriram Sonty. From 5 to 9 p.m., the memorial featured emotional tributes, music, and stories that celebrated a man known for his medical brilliance, cultural pride, and devotion to peace.
The evening was emceed by his elder daughter, Siri Sonty, who opened with the words, “I don’t think he’s left for me,” expressing both her grief and the comfort of a shared celebration. The evening reflected on the many dimensions of Dr. Sonty's life—as a renowned ophthalmologist, a dedicated father, and a passionate advocate of Gandhian values.
Born in Andhra Pradesh, India, in 1946, Dr. Sonty graduated from Andhra Medical College and trained at AIIMS before moving to the U.S. in 1975. He completed further training at Tufts Medical Center, Boston Children’s Hospital, and the University of Pittsburgh. In Chicago, he specialized in glaucoma

New Jersey Expands No-Campaign Zone to 200 Feet Around Vote Boxes

NEW JERSEY- County boards of elections in New Jersey can now double the distance where electioneering is prohibited outside polling places and ballot drop boxes, under a bill signed into law this week by Gov. Phil Murphy.
The new law, approved in the final weeks before the Legislature’s summer recess, allows election officials to ban electioneering within 200 feet of any polling place or ballot drop box while voting is underway. Pre-viously, the restriction applied only within 100 feet. Some party officials questioned the need for the expanded ban.
“These days, with social media, people can reach you inside the polling place on your phone. Unless someone is being disruptive, I don’t see why it even needs
to be banned within 100 feet,” said Peg Schaffer, chair of the Somerset County Democratic Party and vice chair of the state party. “I think it’s potentially an invasion of free speech, and I’m hoping my county board doesn’t enforce it.”
Burlington County GOP chair Sean Earlen echoed a similar sentiment. “I’m not aware of significant issues with electioneering in Burlington County,” he said.
The bill passed largely along party lines, 54-22 in the Assembly and 30-8 in the Senate.
The law takes effect immediately.
New Jersey’s next major election is in November, when Republican Jack Ciattarelli will face Democrat Rep. Mikie Sherrill in the gubernatorial race.
“a protector, scholar, and explorer,” quoting the Bhagavad Gita to describe his eternal presence. Cousin Srinivas Sonty shared childhood memories, while Dr. Vasantha Reddi recited a heartfelt poem. Colleague Dr. Afzal Ahmad recalled their long friendship, and Dr. Vijay Prabhakar announced a memorial award in Dr. Sonty and his wife Sharda’s name.
Senator Ram Villivalam presented a state proclamation recognizing Dr. Sonty’s efforts to promote cultural harmony and youth engagement. Community leaders praised his
commitment to service and cultural preservation.
The night ended with a Bollywood music tribute and a keepsake book of handwritten memories. Gandhi quotes and dad jokes adorned the tables—fitting tributes to a man who lived with joy and purpose.
Dr. Sriram Sonty’s life was a beacon of peace, service, and love—his legacy continues to inspire all who knew him.

On the evening of July 9, the Arizona Border Intelligence Center received a distress call from an individual reporting that he and his companion were lost in the southern Arizona desert.
The caller stated they had been walking for six days with little to no food or water, that he was feeling unwell, and believed his com-panion had died.
Tucson Sector Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue (BORSTAR) agents were immediately dispatched and located the pair approximately four miles east of Arizona State Route 286 near mile marker 33.
BORSTAR emergency medical technicians confirmed the second individual was deceased and requested an ambulance from the Three Points Fire District for the caller. The Mexican national was transported to a local hospital and later released after being medically cleared.
Records checks revealed the caller was an undocumented migrant previously removed from the United States. He will be processed for reinstatement of his prior deportation order.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department recovered the remains of the deceased, who has not yet been iden-tified. Tucson Sector’s Foreign Operations Branch Missing Migrant Program is working with the Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the deceased male and notify the appropriate consulate.

ICE will get access to to View Personal Info of Medicaid Recipients
HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHNGTON, DC- The Trump administration will begin sharing the personal information of nearly 79 million Medicaid enrollees— including home addresses and ethnicities—with federal immigration authori-ties as part of the president’s push to ramp up deportations.
In a statement to NBC News on Thursday, Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaugh-lin described the new data-sharing agreement between her agency and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as “an initiative” to ensure undocumented immigrants do not access Medicaid benefits.
The agreement, which has not yet been made public, comes despite the fact that immigrants without legal status—as well as some lawfully present immigrants—are already barred from enrolling in Medicaid,

the federal health program that provides nearly free coverage to eligible beneficiaries. Federal law does, however, require all states to offer emergency Medicaid, which temporarily covers lifesaving services in emergency rooms regardless of immigration status. Medicaid is jointly funded by the states and the federal government.
The immigration agency will use Medicaid data to identify and trace immigration status”
Under the agreement, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials will use Medicaid data to ob-tain the identities and locations of individuals ICE believes are in the country unlawfully, according to the Associated Press. The database reportedly includes names, addresses, birth dates, ethnic and racial information, and Social Security numbers of all Medicaid enrollees. ICE will be permitted to review the database only during business hours—9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday—until Sept. 9 and will not be allowed to download

the data.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the state is moving quickly to seek a court order to block the sharing of this data for immigration enforcement purposes.
“It is devastating to think that individuals may avoid seeking essential medical care because they fear that doing so could make them targets of this administration,” Bonta said in a statement. “The president’s ef-forts to pull personal, private, and unrelated health data to create a mass deportation machine cannot be allowed to continue.”
Earlier this month, California joined 19 other states—including New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Oregon—in suing the Trump administration over its decision to share personal health data with ICE. A hearing is scheduled for Aug. 7, according to Bonta’s office.

Pakistani National Accused in Smuggling Plot Extradited
HiIndia Newsdesk
TUSCON, AZ- A Pakistani national appeared in court in Tucson, Arizona, following extradition from Mexico to face charges for leading an international human smuggling operation.
In May 2024, a federal grand jury indicted Abbas Ali Haider, 48, of Sialkot, Pakistan, for conspiring to smug-gle Pakistani nationals into the United States.
Haider allegedly operated two fake film production companies—Diamond TV World Productions and Multimedia Advertising Ltd.—as fronts for his smuggling network. Court documents reveal he partnered with film companies in Ecuador, Cuba, and Colombia to secure visas for Pakistani nationals under the pretense of joint film projects. He provided fake paperwork and coached migrants to claim they worked in the film industry, enabling them to enter Latin America and then travel to the U.S.-Mexico border. Haider reportedly charged up to $40,000 per

person for these illegal journeys.
In late 2024, Haider traveled to Mexico and was arrested there in January 2025 at the request of U.S. au-thorities. Extensive collaboration between U.S. and Mexican law enforcement secured his extradition.
Haider faces one count of conspiracy to bring illegal aliens into the U.S. and four counts of bringing aliens for profit. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum of five years in prison. This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a Justice Department initiative targeting transnational criminal organizations and human smuggling networks. Investigative efforts were led by HSI Calexico, in coordination with multiple U.S. and international agencies. An indictment is an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
