Trump threatens Brazil with 50% tariff and demands Bolsonaro's trial end

US President Donald Trump said he was planning to impose a 50% tax on goods made in Brazil, escalating his fight with the South American country.

He announced the plan in his latest tariff letter, which was shared on social media. In it, Trump accuses Brazil of "attacks" on US tech companies and of conducting a "witch hunt" against former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, who is facing prosecution over his alleged role in a plot to overturn the 2022 election.

Responding in a social media post, Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said an increase in tariffs on Brazil would be reciprocated, and he warned against any interference in the nation's judicial system.

Trump also sparred with Lula about Bolsonaro's trial earlier this week.

At the time, Lula said Brazil would not accept "interference" from anyone and added: "No one is above the law."

Also on Wednesday, Trump said a

He said in a social media post that the decision was made due to national security concerns.

administration planning to fire over 2,000 NASA employees: Report

At least 2,145 senior-ranking NASA employees are set to leave under a push to shed staff, according to documents obtained by POLITICO — potentially spelling trouble for White House space policy and depriving the agency of decades of experience.

The 2,145 employees are those in GS13 to GS-15 positions — senior-level government ranks that are typically reserved for those with specialized skills or management responsibilities. The losses are particularly concentrated at higher levels, with 875 GS-15 employees set to leave, according to the documents.

in NASA’s core mission sets, according to the documents. Those leaving include 1,818 staff serving in mission areas like science or human space flight, with the rest performing mission support roles like IT, facilities management or finance.

Those 2,145 employees, in turn, make up the bulk of the 2,694 civil staff who have agreed to leave NASA under a slate of offers that fall within broader administration efforts to trim the federal workforce, according to the documents. NASA has offered staff early retirement, buyouts and deferred resignations. Many of those leaving also serve

US justice department finds no Epstein 'client list'

The US Department of Justice and FBI have concluded that sex offender Jeffrey Epstein did not have a so-called client list that could implicate high-profile associates, and that he did take his own life - contradicting long-held conspiracy theories about the infamous case.

While campaigning last year, President Donald Trump promised to release files relating to the disgraced financier.

But since he returned to office in January, some of his supporters have grown frustrated with the administration's handling of the case and for failing to deliver new revelations. The issue re-emerged earlier this year amid a public spat between Trump and his former adviser Elon Musk.

“You're losing the managerial and core technical expertise of the agency,” said Casey Dreier, chief of space policy at The Planetary Society. “What's the strategy and what do we hope to achieve here?”

The departures follow a proposed White House budget for 2026 that would slash NASA’s funding by 25 percent and cut over 5,000 staff. The cuts, if enacted by Congress, would force the agency to operate with the smallest budget and staff since the early 1960s.

The losses are spread across each of NASA’s 10 regional centers, where much of the agency's work is done and which focus on everything from planning astronaut missions to the moon to sending out deep space probes.

Lula Slams Trump Over 50% Tariffs

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva hit back at his American counterpart, Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50 per cent tariff on Brazilian imports, calling the move an affront to Brazil’s sovereignty and judicial independence. In a sharply worded statement posted on social media, Lula rejected what he described as external interference in Brazil’s democratic institutions, following Trump’s claims that the tariffs were in retaliation for the prosecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

“In light of the public statement made by US President Donald Trump on social media on the afternoon of Wednesday (9), it is important to highlight the following: Brazil is a sovereign nation with independent institutions and will not accept any form of tutelage.

Trump has posted 22 letters to countries around the world this week, including trade partners such as Japan, South Korea and Sri Lanka, outlining new tariffs on their goods which he says will come into force on 1 August.

Those moves have largely served to revive plans he had put forward in April, but that were put on hold after financial markets recoiled at the measures.

But the message to Brazil was a far more targeted missive and threatened a significant increase from the 10% tariff the White House had previously announced on goods from the country.

Unlike many other countries, the US enjoyed a trade surplus with Brazil last year, selling more goods in the country than it purchased from it.

In the letter, Trump called the 50% rate "necessary... to rectify the grave injustices of the current regime".

He said he would order the US Trade Representative to launch a so-called 301 investigation into Brazil's digital trade practices.

UN Gaza Abuse Investigator

United Nations: The Trump administration announced Wednesday that it is issuing sanctions against an independent investigator tasked with probing human rights abuses in the Palestinian territories, the latest effort by the United States to punish critics of Israel's 21-month war in Gaza.

The State Department's decision to impose sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur for the West Bank and Gaza, follows an unsuccessful US pressure campaign to force the international body to remove her from her post.

106 Crores In 40 Accounts: Conversion Gang Mastermind Chhangur Baba's Empire

Jamaluddin alias Chhangur Baba - the mastermind of a religious conversion gang - once used to sell rings and amulets on his bicycle. He now has funds worth Rs 106 crore - mainly received from the Middle East - in 40 bank accounts and at least two properties worth crores.

Chhangur Baba was arrested along with his close associate Neetu alias Nasreen from a hotel in Lucknow on Saturday in connection with the conversion racket recently busted in Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur district. Since then, the noose has been tightening around Jamaluddin.

The police had said in a statement that "the poor, helpless labourers, weaker sections, and widowed women were lured with incentives, financial aid, promises of marriage, or forced through intimidation, in violation of established procedures for religious conversion by the accused".

The UP Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) is also probing if the gang has any terror links. The UP Special Task Force (STF), which registered a case against the gang, is also investigating the matter. The local police are also probing other people allegedly involved in the gang in Balrampur.

Besides these three agencies, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also registered a case to find out the earnings of Chhangur Baba, who is also known as Pir Baba. The basis of the case, which was registered at the Lucknow unit of ED on Tuesday, is a sudden spike in

Jamaluddin's earnings.

The agency is probing who sent the money and for what reasons.

The Empire Of Chhangur Baba

Chhangur Baba once used to sell rings and amulets on his bicycle. He later became a village head. Based on the documents found so far, it has been confirmed that funds worth Rs 106 crore have been deposited into his 40 different accounts. All this money has come from Islamic countries of the Middle East, as per the probe.

The entire empire of Chhangur Baba, who is from Rehra Mafi village in Uttar Pradesh, is in the Uttaraula area of Balrampur district, bordering Nepal. He was also once appointed as the head of his native village. After he met his now

aide Neetu, he built a building on a land next to a dargah (a shrine) in Madhpur, nearly three kilometres away from Rehra Mafi village. However, a government investigation found the building to be illegal. On Wednesday, authorities bulldozed the alleged illegal construction on government land.

The building had two sections - Chhangur Baba, his family and aides used to stay in one of the sections. As far as the other section is concerned, there were various plans but no execution to date.

It was earlier alleged that a hospital would be built there. A few years later, it was claimed that a hospital could not be built in this building, so a school or college would be built. Many years have passed since the claims, but it is still not clear for what purpose the building is being

Trump's Tariff Hike: Impact on Indian Copper, Pharma

US President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on copper imports and warned of a potential 200% duty on pharmaceuticals, escalating trade tensions with major exporting nations, including India. The copper tariff is expected to take effect by August 1, and the pharmaceutical duty could be implemented after a one-year grace period. India, a significant exporter of both copper and generic medicines to the US, may face serious consequences. In 2024-25, India exported $2 billion worth of copper globally, with $360 million (17%) going to the US. Though the US is India’s third-largest copper market, the domestic industry might absorb the impact due to the metal’s critical role in energy and

infrastructure.

The pharmaceutical sector, however, faces a greater threat. The US is India’s top pharma export destination, accounting for $9.8 billion in FY25—40% of total pharma exports. A steep 200% tariff could dent demand for affordable Indian generics in the American market. Trump has also reiterated plans for a 10% tariff on BRICS nations, citing economic rivalry. The US is reviewing trade policies across multiple sectors, including semiconductors and critical minerals. India is currently negotiating a mini-trade deal with the US. If concluded before the August 1 deadline, it may help shield Indian exports from the impending tariff hike.

used. The building has two dogs and 15 CCTV cameras.

Apart from the Balrampur building, Chhangur Baba also had many properties in several other places. One of these properties is in Maharashtra's Lonavala and was bought in the name of Changur Baba and Naveen - also arrested recently - on August 2, 2023.

The price of this land is Rs 16. 49 crore, as per the documents.

The land was sold by a man named Mohammad Ahmed Khan. An Ahmed Khan is also under investigation as he was found to have sent funds to Chhangur Baba. Now it is being investigated whether this Ahmed Khan is the same person who sold the land to Jamaluddin.

On the radar of the security agencies are also those agents, officers and employees in the government system, who were allegedly helping Chhangur in his illegal work. The agencies are also probing how many people he converted and whether the money he received was also used in anti-national activities.

On Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Tuesday that "initial probe" has shown that the activities of accused Jamaluddin are "not only against society but also against the nation". Asserting that there will be no leniency in matters related to law and order in the state, the chief minister stated, "The properties of the accused and other criminals linked to his gang will be seized, and strict legal action will be taken against them."

China Protests Modi’s Dalai Lama Wishes

China said on Monday it protested to India over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings to the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday and the attendance of Indian officials at the celebrations, stressing New Delhi should fully appreciate Beijing’s sensitivities on Tibet-related issues. China’s position on Tibet-related affairs is consistent and clear and it's known to all, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a media briefing here. Trump Warns Mamdani Over Netanyahu Arrest Threat

Washington: US President Donald Trump has lashed out at Indian-origin Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani over his remarks against Israel and threat to arrest Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits New York, citing an ICC warrant. Trump accused Mamdani of being "a communist" with anti-Jewish views and warned that if Mamdani wins New York’s mayoral race in November, he will need to "behave" to receive federal funds

“He’s going through a little honeymoon right now, but he better behave, or he’s going to have big problems,” Trump said ahead of a private dinner with Netanyahu.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old Queens Assemblyman, has been vocally critical of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Netanyahu dismissed Mamdani’s threat, calling it “silly” and “not serious.” Trump interrupted to say, “I’ll get him out.”

Netanyahu is expected to visit New York, possibly as early as September, to attend the UN General Assembly.

Trump Slaps Tariffs, Says India Deal Near

Washington: Even as the US slapped fresh tariffs on several nations, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Washington was close to making a trade deal with India. Trade negotiators from Washington and New Delhi are pushing to finalise a tariffreducing deal, but disagreements over dairy and agriculture sectors are delaying the process. "We've made a deal with the United Kingdom, we've made a deal with China, we've made a deal - we're close to making a deal with India...Others we met with, we don't

think we're going to be able to make a deal. So we just send them a letter," he said at the White House.

key trading partners, including Bangladesh, Thailand, South Korea and Japan, to come into effect starting August 1.

Trump's remarks came after the US unveiled the first in a wave of promised letters that threaten to impose higher tariff rates on

"We're sending out letters to various countries telling them how much tariffs they have to pay. Some will maybe adjust a little bit depending if they have a cause, we're not going to be unfair about it," the US President said. Both sides are at loggerheads over a number of issues, including Washington's demand that India open its market to genetically modified crops - a long-standing red line for New Delhi due to risks to its farmers.

Indian Family Of 4, On Vacation In US, Burns To Death In Car Crash

The collision occurred in Green County when a mini-truck, reportedly traveling on the wrong side of the road, crashed head-on with their car.

An Indian family of four from Hyderabad tragically died in a car crash in Dallas, United States, on Monday. The victims, identified as Tejaswini, Sri Venkat, and their two children, were on vacation in the U.S. and returning to Dallas after visiting relatives in Atlanta when the incident occurred.

The crash took place in Green County, where a mini-truck, allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road, collided head-on with their car. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire, trapping the family inside. All four were charred to death, and the car was reduced to ashes.

Authorities have sent the victims' remains—mostly bones—for forensic testing. DNA analysis will be conducted to confirm their identities before handing over the bodies to the grieving relatives. This is the latest in a string of fatal crashes involving Indian nationals in Texas. In September 2024, four Indians died in Anna, Texas, after a truck rear-ended their SUV, igniting a fire. In August 2024, an Indianorigin couple and their daughter died in another fiery crash, leaving behind a surviving teenage son. These incidents have raised concerns about road safety for Indian travelers in the U.S.

US delays higher tariffs but announces new rates for some nations

President Donald Trump has delayed imposing higher tariffs on US imports, while sending letters to 14 countries including Japan and South Korea detailing the levies they face.

The latest development comes as a 90-day pause the White House placed on some of its most aggressive import taxes was set to expire this week. The president renewed his threat of a 25% tax on products entering the

country from Japan and South Korea and shared a batch of other letters to world leaders warning of levies from 1 August.

Higher tariffs had been set to come into effect on 9 July, having previously been suspended with White House officials saying they would look to strike trade deals.

When asked by a reporter whether the new August date was a hard deadline, Trump said: "I would say firm, but not 100% firm. If they call up and they say we'd like to do something a different way, we're going to be open to that."

The extension came as no surprise since trade agreements often take years to finalise, economist Adam Ahmad Samdin from research firm Oxford Economics told the BBC.

Trump Slams BRICS, Warns of 10% Tariff

President Donald Trump said he would put an additional 10% tariff on any country aligning themselves with "the Anti-American policies of BRICS," injecting further uncertainty into global trade as the US continues to negotiate levies with many trading partners.

"Any Country aligning themselves with the AntiAmerican policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff," Trump said Sunday night in a Truth Social post. "There will be no exceptions to this policy." Trump's post didn't specify which policies he considers "AntiAmerican," nor did it provide details on when any of those tariffs might be imposed.

After Trump Warning, China Says BRICS Not Seeking Clash

China said on Monday that BRICS, the grouping that also includes Brazil, Russia and India, was not seeking "confrontation" after US President Donald Trump vowed to impose an extra 10 percent tariff on countries aligning with the bloc.

"Regarding the imposition of tariffs, China has repeatedly stated its position that trade and tariff wars have no winners and protectionism offers no way forward," foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said. Trump said he would send the

He said on Sunday he would send a first batch of up to 15 letters, warning that US levies on imports would snap back to the high levels he set in April if countries failed to make agreements. Akash Deep’s careerbest helps India break Edgbaston jinx

Memory and history are tricksters, it is said. The recent imagery from Headingley, Leeds of Jasprit Bumrah taking the lone five-wicket haul and his past record of bailing the Indian team out single-handedly on multiple occasions may have led many a supporter to believe that there was no world without the maverick pacer.

However, a winning cricket team is not always a collection of 11 best players but a unit that is bigger than the sum of its parts. On Sunday (July 6, 2025) at Edgbaston, Shubman Gill & Co., in Bumrah’s absence, reiterated one of elite sport’s eternal truths to record a magnificent 336-run victory over England in the second Test to level the series 1-1.

Indians Can Now Get UAE Golden Visa Without Investment

In a major policy shift, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has simplified its Golden Visa eligibility, allowing Indian nationals to apply without owning property or holding a trade license. The change opens doors for a wider group of professionals, freelancers, and investors from India seeking long-term residency.

Earlier, applicants were required to invest in real estate worth at least AED 2 million (approx Rs.4.5 crore) or run a business with a valid trade license. Under the new rules, skilled

professionals in fields like medicine, science, IT, engineering, education, and the arts can apply based on qualifications and employment alone.

To be eligible, applicants must have a valid work contract, a minimum monthly salary of AED 30,000

(approx Rs. 6.7 lakh), and a degree in a specialized field. Freelancers are also eligible, provided they can prove their experience and credentials.

The UAE’s move aims to attract global talent and support its transformation into an innovation-driven economy. With India being one of the largest expatriate communities in the UAE, the relaxed norms are expected to deepen bilateral ties.

Golden Visa holders enjoy 10-year residency, self-sponsorship, family sponsorship, and greater travel flexibility, making this an attractive option for Indian professionals.

Texas Floods: Bodies on Trees,

Rotting Fish on Banks

Texas authorities continued search and rescue operations on Monday, four days after devastating flash floods swept through central Texas, killing nearly 80 people and leaving at least 41 missing. Most fatalities occurred in Kerrville’s Hill Country, where the Guadalupe River, swollen by pre-dawn downpours before the July 4 holiday, surged to the height of a two-story building within an hour. The flooding destroyed homes, swept away vehicles, and devastated children’s camps. Among the victims was Joyce Bandon, who had gone to a country house with friends for the holiday. Her final text read, “We’re being washed away,” before her phone went dead. Volunteers, led by Louis Deppe, have been combing through debris searching for her.

One victim’s body was found lodged 10 feet high in a tree, hidden by thick debris.

Seventeen helicopters are aiding the search, especially for ten girls and a counsellor missing from a riverside Christian summer camp that housed 750 people. The camp was left in ruins—blankets, toys, and personal belongings buried under mud. Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed 41 people remain unaccounted for. A dramatic video showed a 22-yearold woman being rescued after clinging to a Cypress tree for hours. She had been swept 20 miles downriver before being heard screaming by a homeowner in Centre Point, who helped save her. With bodies found in trees and fish rotting along riverbanks, the destruction highlights the tragic scale of the flooding disaster in Texas.

Terror Alert Issued for 4th July Celebration as 'Lone Wolf' Threat Looms

WASHINGTON, DC- Amid rising U.S.-Iran tensions following June 22 strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, authorities are boosting security nationwide for Fourth of July events. Former Secret Service agent Michael Verden says DHS has declared a heightened threat environment through September 22, citing risks of retaliation and rising anti-Semitic sentiment. Public gatherings and travel hubs face increased law enforcement, with rooftop surveillance, bomb detection, and crowd control prioritized. Verden urges attendees to review exits and have emergency plans. He warns that symbolic holidays, combined with global conflict, raise the risk of domestic attacks. Recent U.S.-Israeli strikes may further provoke Iranian response efforts.

India-US trade talks stuck on corn, ethanol, soyabean, dairy

US President Donald Trump has said a “very big” trade deal with India is in the works to “open up” the country for American exports and reduce tariffs. However, India’s firm stance on agriculture and dairy — its “red lines” — remains a major roadblock in ongoing negotiations. The main sticking points are four key farm products: corn (maize), ethanol, soyabean, and dairy.

India has maintained that agriculture and dairy are its “red lines” in its ongoing negotiations with the US.

PM Modi Conferred With Ghana's National Honour

1. Corn: India opposes genetically modified (GM) maize, which makes up 94% of the US crop. While a 15% import duty applies to limited quantities, anything beyond 0.5 million tonnes faces a 50% tariff. Proposals to allow GM maize for ethanol production — not for food or feed — have been floated, but domestic sugar mills and political factors, especially with Bihar elections nearing, may block it.

2. Ethanol: India imports ethanol only for non-fuel industrial uses. The US, a major exporter, wants

3. Soyabean: While GM soyabean oil is allowed, GM whole beans and de-oiled cake (used in feed) are banned due to concerns over GM protein. Though a withdrawn NITI Aayog paper suggested importing GM soyabean for oil extraction and exporting the cake, political pushback is expected from major soyabean-producing states.

4. Dairy: India imposes steep tariffs (30–60%) on dairy imports and insists products must come from animals not fed on bovine slaughter byproducts. This stance, rooted in cultural and religious sensitivities, makes concessions here politically improbable. These issues are delaying a final deal, even as both nations aim to avoid tariff escalation before the July 9 deadline

Accra: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Wednesday conferred with 'The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana', the country's national honour, for his "distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership".

PM Modi received the award from the Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.

"Honoured to be conferred with 'The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana'," the prime minister said in an X post. In his acceptance speech, PM Modi said the award was a matter of great pride and honour for him.

US Student Visa Applications Are Now Open

Washington DC: US student visa applications are now open, the State Department confirmed on Wednesday, encouraging Indian students to apply while stressing that all visa decisions are based on national security.

Deputy Spokesperson Mignon Houston told ANI, “We want students to use their visas properly—come to the US to study, not obstruct or vandalize campuses.” She reiterated that immigration policies are designed to protect both US citizens and international students.Houston also highlighted India's critical role in the Indo-Pacific region and ongoing efforts to finalize a bilateral trade agreement before the July 9 deadline. “India is an essential partner. We want trade that is fair and reciprocal,” she said, referencing the Trump administration’s “America First” agenda.

Defending US tariffs, Houston noted that unfair trade practices have harmed American farmers and industries. “These tariffs are meant to bring countries to a point of fairness,” she added.

US President Donald Trump echoed this sentiment, stating a deal with India is “likely soon” and could involve reduced tariffs. “India doesn’t allow much in now, but I think they will. We’re aiming for a competitive, low-tariff deal,” he said. Talks between Indian and US officials have intensified, with India’s team, led by Chief Negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, extending its stay in Washington. Originally scheduled for two days, negotiations have been extended in hopes of sealing an interim pact. If no agreement is reached by July 9, a previously paused 26% tariff structure could be reinstated immediately, posing a significant challenge to both economies.

Trump Administration Withholds $142M

in

NJ School Funding

NEW JERSEY- The Trump administration is withholding over $6 billion in education funding already ap-propriated by Congress, jeopardizing after-school care, student support, teacher training, English lan-guage, adult literacy, and other vital programs in New Jersey. The funding pause, part of a review to align grants with President Trump’s priorities, leaves states and schools in limbo as they plan budgets for summer and the upcoming school year. Without these funds, schools say they cannot provide free or affordable after-school care for low-income children or hire staff for English learners. Even summer camps already underway may be forced to close.

said.

New Jersey faces losing nearly $143 million, including $32.5 million for 21st Century Community Learning Centers, which support after-school programs.

The Afterschool Alliance reports that for every child en-rolled in such programs, three more are waiting for a spot.

The Boys and Girls Clubs, reliant on these funds, warn that hundreds of clubs may close, affecting over 220,000 children. Other grants at risk include $2 billion for teacher training and smaller class sizes, $1 bil-lion for science and math enrichment, $890 million for English learners, and $376 million for migrant edu-cation.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin, joining 18 other attorneys general, sued the Trump admin-istration over the delays. “We won’t stand for this unlawful threat or any action harming our top-ranked education system,” Platkin

Advocates fear these grants may be eliminated entirely, as Trump’s 2026 budget proposed zeroing them out. “This funding is essential,” said Sen. Patty Murray. “Every day of delay hurts students.”

The Boys and Girls Clubs, reliant on these funds, warn that hundreds of clubs may close, affecting over 220,000 children.

As India and the US are yet to announce the much-awaited interim trade deal, American President Donald Trump Thursday said Washington would begin sending letters that will have reciprocal tariff rates for each country starting Friday.

“My inclination is to send a letter out and say what tariffs countries are going to pay. We have more than 170 countries. And how many deals can you make? And you can make good deals, but they’re very much more complicated,” Trump said.

Raj-Uddhav Reunion After 20 Years?

Mumbai witnessed a rare political reunion as cousins Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray shared a stage after nearly two decades.

The event, titled 'Awaj Marathicha' (Voice of the Marathi), marked a historic collaboration between Uddhav’s Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). This show of unity comes after the Maharashtra government rolled back its controversial plan to mandate Hindi as a third language in primary schools. Both leaders had strongly opposed the policy, framing the rally as a win for Marathi identity.

Raj Thackeray struck a fiery tone, declaring, “There will be no compromise on the Marathi

language,” and criticising the Hindi language push. He credited Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis for inadvertently reuniting the cousins, quipping, “What Balasaheb couldn't do, Fadnavis did.” He also warned against any move to undermine Maharashtra’s cultural identity. Uddhav, in contrast, adopted a softer approach. Jokingly addressing Raj as "respected," he acknowledged their long separation but emphasised, “We have removed the distance between us. We have come together, and we will stay together.” The last time the duo shared a public platform was in 2005, during the Malvan by-election campaign. Raj left Shiv Sena later that year, alleging disrespect within the party after Uddhav was named as its working president.

China warns India over Rijiju’s Dalai Lama remarks

China has cautioned India to act “prudently” on Tibet-related issues after Union Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that only the Dalai Lama and his institution have the authority to decide his successor. Beijing strongly objected to the remarks, calling the 14th Dalai Lama an "anti-China separatist" and urged India to honour its past commitments on Tibet.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said India should "avoid adverse impacts" on bilateral relations and reiterated that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must follow traditional Chinese-approved procedures, including the use of the "golden urn" and central government approval.

Beijing maintains that it has the final say on the Dalai Lama’s succession, calling it a historical and legal right.

The Dalai Lama on Saturday put to rest rumours surrounding the announcement of his successor as he said he hopes to live for another 30-40 years more to serve people.

Trump Now Backs More Arms for Ukraine

President Donald Trump said on Monday (July 7, 2025) the U.S. will have to send more weapons to Ukraine, just days after ordering a pause in critical weapons deliveries to Kyiv. The comments by Mr. Trump appeared to be an abrupt change in posture after the Pentagon announced last week that it would hold back delivering to Ukraine some air defense missiles, precision-guided artillery and other weapons amid U.S. concerns that its own stockpiles have declined too much.

Trump's Tariff Plans Would Cost US Employers

$82.3

Billion: Analysis

Washington: An analysis finds a critical group of US employers would face a direct cost of $82.3 billion from President Donald Trump's current tariff plans, a sum that could potentially be managed through price hikes, layoffs, hiring freezes or lower profit margins. The analysis by the JPMorganChase Institute is among the first to measure the direct costs created by the import

taxes on businesses with $10 million to $1 billion in annual revenue, a category including roughly a third of privatesector US workers. These companies are more dependent than other businesses on imports from China, India and Thailand - and the retail and wholesale sectors would be especially vulnerable to the import taxes being levied by the Republican president.

Nirav Modi's Brother Arrested In US On Extradition Request From India

New Delhi:

Nehal Deepak Modi, younger brother of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi, has been arrested in the United States following an extradition request issued by Indian authorities.

Nehal Modi, a Belgian national, was arrested on July 4 in the United States by local authorities acting on a Red Corner Notice issued by Interpol at the request of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). His arrest comes after a prolonged

legal and diplomatic process, during which he challenged the Red Corner Notice but ultimately failed to have it revoked.

The charges against Nehal Modi stem from his alleged involvement in the multi-billion dollar Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, a banking fraud

first exposed in early 2018, in which his elder brother, Nirav Modi, is the principal accused. Indian authorities allege that Nehal Modi played a role in helping Nirav destroy key evidence, intimidate witnesses, and obstruct the investigation in the aftermath of the scandal.

Nehal Modi is also accused of laundering black money worth thousands of crores earned from the scam with the help of his brother. Investigation has revealed that Nehal distributed this money through shell companies and transactions done abroad.

Bollywood’s shift towards ageappropriate romances

Woh zamana gaya

R Madhavan

R Madhavan, currently promoting his Netflix film Aap Jaisa Koi, feels that the film industry is finally beginning to recognize the audience’s growing demand for more realistic and age-appropriate portrayals of romance on screen.

In an interview with India Today, R Madhavan pointed out a noticeable change in how love stories are being portrayed, particularly in addressing the age gap between lead actors. “They are more age-appropriate romances right now,” he said. “Because people have criticised it so much. Now all the heroes are thinking, ‘Woh zamana gaya’ — the time is gone when you could be much older and still pretend to be the same age as the heroine and romance her.”

Calling the shift inevitable, Madhavan added, “That has stopped now. That is completely stopped, I think, and also not being accepted. So, if you are [doing it], you have to be smart with how you show age-appropriate romance.”

But is this shift universally embraced? “Whatever works,” Madhavan said. “If your people are coming up in arms with what you are doing, then obviously that's not working. Our job is to tell them a story in the manner they want to hear it. But main apne hi dhun mein gaata rahunga. Aur agar koi sunne ke liye nahi hai, toh akeli dekh lo movies.”

Talking about Aap Jaisa Koi, Madhavan hints that the film delves deeper than just an unconventional romance. “The beauty of this story is that it’s seeped into very current-day situations,” he said. “It looks like a simple love story between two people who have an age difference. But that’s not the only part of the story. That’s a very limited part of the entire story.”

He further explained, “What we’ve explored with the script and how Vivek (Soni) has directed it is how do people in today’s world, living in a crowd but cursed with loneliness, handle that bit?

Pacing has become almost everything today. And in small towns and villages, they seem to have got something right that we in the cities haven’t,” he said. “So, this is exploring that sort of a relationship, and that’s why I was very excited about it.” Aap Jaisa Koi, starring R Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh, is slated for release on July 11.

Ranveer's Dhurandhar: Pakistan Set Recreated in Thailand

It is difficult to imagine the Asian country to be depicted as Pakistan, possibly because the topography of both regions is different. The source, however, assured, “The makers have taken all the care to ensure that the shooting location ditto looks like our neighbouring country, as evident in the trailer. Also, we must understand that Thailand is not just beaches, sea and islands and has a lot more to offer. Moreover, the government of Thailand provides excellent facilities. They extended all possible cooperation to the team of Dhurandhar. As a result, shooting there was an ideal choice and the makers were happy that they took the decision.” it also stars Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan and Sara Arjun. Backed by Jio Studios and B62 Studios, it will be released in cinemas on December 5. on the occasion of Ranveer Singh’s birthday, the much-awaited teaser of Dhurandhar was unveiled and it met with a rocking response. In a heartfelt interview with, veteran actor Jackie Shroff shared how he fell in love with his wife Ayesha at first sight. He recalled seeing her for the first time on a bus after a march past, holding a flag and hanging from the handle. "She was 14 or 15. I told myself, 'This is the lady I shall marry,’” he said.

Soon after, he introduced himself, and a brief conversation followed. A few days later, Ayesha’s friend approached him with an acting opportunity from filmmaker OP Ralhan. “I didn’t get the role, but we fell in love,” Jackie said. The couple tied the knot in 1987, when Jackie was still a struggling actor living in a Mumbai chawl. “My house was running on Rs 30. My wife lived with me in one room, queued for the washroom. I lived 33 years in that chawl,” he recalled. Despite coming from a privileged background—Ayesha's father, Ranjan Dutt, was a decorated Air Vice Marshal and later led Hindustan Aeronautics Limited—Ayesha never hesitated to stand by Jackie. “She even sold her house to buy me one and supported me financially,” he revealed. Jackie also mentioned that her family didn’t object to their relationship. “Her father must have seen my intentions. Maybe they trusted me, and I haven’t let that trust down,” he said. The story is a testament to enduring love and partnership through struggle and success.

The JAINA Convention 2025, held from July 3 to 6 at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center, Illinois, embraced the theme “Unity in Diversity: A Path to Peace”, inspired by the Jain maxim “Parasparopagraho Jīvānām”—living for the welfare of all. A winding path leads from the bird, symbolizing the individual and collective spiritual journey toward peace. A Rich Tapestry of Programs

Thousands of Naturalized Citizens at Risk as Trump Expands Denaturalization Program

WASHINGTON, DC-The Justice Department has issued new guidelines instructing attorneys to aggressively pursue stripping citizenship from naturalized Americans who concealed crimes or posed national security threats during the naturalization process—a policy that could impact nearly 25 million people.

A June 11 memo from Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate establishes several priority categories for denaturalization and directs the Civil Division to “prioritize and maximally pursue denaturalization pro-ceedings in all cases permitted by law and supported by the evidence.” The policy targets individuals who “pose a potential danger to national security, including those with ties to terrorism,” as well as those who “committed felonies that were not disclosed during the naturalization process.” The memo also permits attorneys to pursue cases against individuals with “pending criminal charges,” even if they have not yet been convicted. Shumate noted

Indian Pediatrician Faces Murder Charge in 4 Year Old Daughter’s Death

MIAMI-DADE, FL -A 36-year-old pediatrician, Dr. Neha Gupta, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the drowning death of her 4-year-old daughter, Aria Talathi. The arrest took place in Oklahoma City following an investigation by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau. The incident occurred on June 27 at approximately 4:28 a.m., when officers from the Village of El Portal Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a child drowning in a residential pool at 156 NW 90th Street, El Portal, Florida. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported Aria to a local hospital, where she was pro-nounced dead. Investigators determined that Gupta and her daughter had traveled from Oklahoma City and were staying at a short-term rental in El Portal. After consulting with the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Gupta. She was taken into custody in Oklahoma City with assistance from the Oklahoma City Police Department’s Homicide Unit and the United States Marshals Service. Dr. Gupta is awaiting extradition to Miami-Dade County, where she will face first-degree murder charges.

Historic Win: $2.5M Secured for AAPI Curriculum in NYC Schools, Says Krishnan

NEW YORK, NY – Queens Council Member Shekar Krishnan on July 2 celebrated what he called a “dec-ades-long victory” with the announcement of a $2.5 million investment to incorporate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) history into New York City public schools.

Joined on the steps of City Hall by Council Members Linda Lee, Sandra Ung, Julie Won, and Carlina Rivera, Krishnan marked the inclusion of AAPI curriculum in the city’s FY2026 budget as a historic achievement.

“This is a historic step forward,” Krishnan wrote on social media. “We’ve fought for years to ensure AAPI history is taught in our classrooms— and now we’ve secured $2.5 million to make it happen.”

The funding, part of the Education Equity Action Plan, is included in the $116 billion city budget passed unanimously by the City Council earlier this week. The initiative aims to formally embed AAPI studies into school curricula across all five boroughs.

Krishnan, a longtime advocate for immigrant and minority communities, credited grassroots efforts by ed-ucators, scholars, and community leaders for turning the push for AAPI representation in education into policy.

Joining city officials in the celebration were organizations such as the Chinese American Planning Council, Korean Community Services, South Asian Youth Action, the Asian American/Asian Research Institute, and the Asian American Education Project—all of which played pivotal roles in championing the cause.

terrorists.” Critics, however, have raised alarm over po-tential constitutional concerns. Law professor and former U.S. attorney Joyce Vance warned that “the provision is so vague it could permit the Division to denaturalize for just about anything,” potentially targeting “troublesome journalists who are naturalized citizens” or even “students.”

The policy has also drawn political attention. President Donald Trump recently said he would “take a look” at the possibility of deporting Elon Musk— who has criticized his proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill”—joking that “we might have to put DOGE on Elon.”

This marks a significant escalation from earlier initiatives, such as Operation Janus under the Obama ad-ministration, which identified hundreds of immigrants who were ordered deported but later obtained U.S. citizenship under false identities. The administration has already achieved one high-profile denaturalization in the case of Elliott Duke, a British-born Army veteran convicted of distributing child sexual abuse materi-al, who is now stateless.

MiraCosta Gets $1.2M to Grow

Nursing Program

OCEANSIDE, CA – MiraCosta College has been awarded a $1.2 million grant through California’s Rebuilding Nursing Infrastructure initiative to expand its nursing program and help address the region’s critical short-age of registered nurses.

This funding will allow MiraCosta to increase student enrollment by 26% and enhance clinical training with advanced simulation technologies. The college will also establish partnerships with California State Univer-sities to streamline transfer pathways and launch an innovative apprenticeship program enabling Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) to advance to Registered Nurses (RNs).

The San Diego region currently faces a 46% RN shortfall, with 1,925 open positions and only 1,037 nursing graduates in 2022-2023 — a gap of 888 nurses. The situation is compounded by a rapidly aging population, projected to grow by 32% among residents 65 and older by 2050, and by persistent health disparities such as limited access to care and higher chronic disease mortality rates.

Immigration Agents Caught on Camera Urinating at High School in CA

PICO RIVERA, CA -- The El Rancho Unified School District has released video footage allegedly show-ing ICE and Border Patrol agents urinating on a school campus in Pico Rivera.

The incident occurred on the morning of June 17. According to the district, approximately 10 marked and unmarked federal vehicles entered Salazar High School at 9115 Balfour Street. Surveillance cameras captured some agents urinating on school grounds, district officials said.

School board leaders described the agents’ actions as “deeply disturbing.”

“This occurred in broad daylight, from approximately 8:54 a.m. to 9:04 a.m.,” said ERUSD Board President John Contreras.

The district reported that agents from both ICE and CBP urinated behind storage containers located near a playground. These containers are visible from a neighboring public park and nearby Valencia Elementary School.

Although Salazar High School was not in session at the time, summer classes were taking place at the ele-mentary school.

District leaders also stated that the agents entered the campus without a warrant and left after being asked to leave. “They failed to exercise sound and respectful judgment, risking

exposure to minors and committing a po-tential public offense under California law,” Contreras added.

On the same day, federal immigration agents were also caught on video aggressively detaining a 20-year-old at a nearby Pico Rivera shopping center.

Adrian Martinez, a U.S. citizen, now faces a felony charge of conspiracy to interfere with a federal agent after he reportedly tried to intervene as agents de-tained a janitor.

The newly released video from El Rancho Unified has intensified concerns over

federal agents’ conduct in Pico Rivera. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said: “This matter is under investigation.” Meanwhile, district officials are calling for a federal investigation into the agents’ behavior on campus.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who represents Pico Rivera, issued the following statement: “It’s not enough that they’ve spent weeks violently ambushing people; now ICE and CBP agents are alleg-edly entering school campuses, pulling down their pants, and urinating on playgrounds. It’s a slap in the face to our communities—especially to our children. I join the El Rancho Unified School District in de-manding a full federal investigation into this incident.”

masked suspects and stolen vehicles, have led to significant losses and at least one reported injury. The most recent incident occurred on July 1, just before 6

p.m., at Amber Jewelers and Watch Palace on Pioneer Blvd in Artesia. Surveillance footage shows at least 12 masked men storming the store, smashing display cases, and fleeing with handfuls of jewelry. Three terrified customers hid near the counter as the chaos unfolded. The Lakewood Sheriff’s Station is investigating and urges anyone with information to call (562) 623-3500 or provide anonymous tips via “Crime Stoppers” at (800) 222-TIPS (8477) or lacrimestop-pers.org. Just two days earlier, on June 29, a jewelry store on East El Camino Real in Sunnyvale was hit in a similar daytime robbery around 2:45 p.m. Suspects used a stolen vehicle to ram the building, then smashed display cases with hammers, escaping with an undisclosed amount of jewelry in less than 90 seconds. The store owner sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized. Sunnyvale Public Safety officers later located a suspect vehicle but called off a pursuit due to public safety concerns. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective G. Limon at (408) 730-7110.

Since May 2024, at least eight Indian jewelry stores in the Bay Area have been targeted in comparable heists, including Nitin Jewelers, PNG Jewelers (Sunnyvale), Bhindi Jewelers (Newark), Bombay Jewelry Company (Berkeley), Kumar Jewelers (Fremont), and BJ Jewelers (Dublin). Authorities have made arrests in two cases—PNG and Kumar Jewelers— but warn the crime pattern appears to be escalating. Earlier incidents include a March 30 robbery attempt in Sunnyvale, where thieves rammed a store with a stolen car but fled when confronted by an armed employee. On June 20, robbers similarly used a stolen car to breach a Dublin jewelry store, only to leave empty-handed after learning the owner had removed mer-chandise following a Fremont heist days earlier.

Indian Pro Told to 'Stop Speaking' Over Accent, Sparks Outrage

WASHINGTON, DC- An Indian professional working in the U.S. recently took to Reddit to share an upset-ting workplace encounter that drew strong reactions across the platform. According to his post, a senior American colleague told him to “stop speaking in meetings” because they couldn’t understand his accent. The remark was made during a routine meeting where he had simply asked for a project update— part of his usual responsibilities. The Reddit user described the comment as insulting and dismissive. “I’ve always made an effort to speak clearly and professionally. No one has ever said anything like this before,” he wrote, noting that he’s been working with the same client for over a year. The post quickly went viral, especially among users experienced with multicultural teams. Many condemned the colleague’s comment as unprofessional and discriminatory. One commenter, Vijay Vithal, shared his own experience working with global teams. “I’ve been in meetings with Russians, Vietnamese, etc., where I couldn’t understand a word. We used shared Google Docs to clar-ify. People adapt.” He added, “If an American says he can’t understand me, I assume he’s facing the same challenge I’ve had with others.”

Vithal also suggested a calm, constructive response: send an email asking the colleague what form of communication works better, since verbal conversations seem challenging.

Another user pointed out that accents are expected in international work environments and are rarely an issue. “I’ve worked with people from France, Italy, Australia, and Africa. If someone can’t understand something, they politely ask for it to be repeated— no one tells anyone to stop speaking.”

The post has sparked a broader conversation about how non-native English speakers are treated in global workplaces. Many emphasized that mutual respect and patience are essential, and professionalism should go both ways.

The Indian professional hasn’t said whether he plans to escalate the issue, but several users encouraged him to report the incident to HR if the behavior continues.

Indian American Chicago Suburbs: Businessman Convicted in Pandemic Loan and Banking Fraud Case

CHICAGO, IL- A federal jury has convicted an Illinois businessman for his role in schemes to fraudulently obtain over $55 million in commercial loans and lines of credit, as well as for submitting fraudulent appli-cations for COVID-19 relief funds under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

According to court documents and trial evidence, Rahul Shah, 56, of Evanston, owned and operated sever-al information technology companies in the Chicago area. Shah fraudulently secured funds from loans and lines of credit for which he was ineligible and later defaulted on at least one loan and one line of credit. He submitted falsified bank statements inflating deposits, fabricated balance sheets overstating revenues, and forged audited financial statements to federally insured financial institutions. Shah also conducted mone-tary transactions involving proceeds from the bank fraud.

Shah was convicted of seven counts of bank fraud, five counts of making false statements to a financial institution, two counts of money laundering, and two counts of aggravated identity theft. He faces up to 30 years in prison for each bank fraud and false statement count, up to 10 years for each money launder-ing count, and up to two years for each aggravated identity theft count. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 13. The case was investigated by the FBI

Chicago Field Office and the Small Business Administration Office of Inspector General (SBA OIG) Chicago Field Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant Chief Patrick Mott and Trial Attorney Lindsey Carson of the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jasmina Vajzovic for the Northern District of Illinois. The Fraud Section leads the Justice Department’s efforts to prosecute PPP-related fraud. Since the CARES Act’s enactment, the section has charged over 200 defendants in more than 130 cases and seized over $78 million in cash, along with real estate and luxury items purchased with fraudulently obtained PPP funds. $13M Grants for Chicago Libraries Under Giannoulias Plan

CHICAGO, IL- The Illinois Secretary of State’s office is awarding over $13 million in grant funding to li-braries across the Chicago area, benefiting more than 8.5 million residents, Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias announced.

“A library is more than just a building with books – it’s a hub for opportunity, discovery, and community connection,” Giannoulias said.

“From early childhood education to workforce development, libraries em-power individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Properly funding them ensures they can continue making a significant impact in communities across Illinois.”

The announcement comes as federal cuts threaten library budgets nationwide. In March, the Trump ad-ministration signed an executive order eliminating the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which provides $180 million annually to public libraries nationwide. Illinois receives nearly $6 million of that funding each year – the sixth highest amount among states.

“We’re doing things differently in Illinois,” Giannoulias said. “Instead of cutting funding that limits learning and harms communities, we’re investing in resources to help Illinoisans learn, grow, and explore – now and in the future.”

In addition to the new funding, Giannoulias’ office advanced legislation this spring enabling

Over 220 Public Libraries Will Receive Funds for Books, Technology, Staffing Needs

the Secretary of State to issue security grants to libraries statewide, ensuring safe environments for patrons, employees, and communities.

In 2023, the office also spearheaded landmark legislation prohibiting book bans in Illinois – the first law of its kind in the nation – setting a precedent in the fight against censorship.

Per-Capita Grants

A total of 224 public libraries serving 8,587,911 Chicago-area residents will receive more than $13 million in per-capita grants. Funding amounts are calculated using a statutory formula based on community popu-lation. Libraries may use these funds for books, e-books, online resources, internet access, staffing, public programming, and capital projects.

Technology Grants

Sixteen public libraries in underserved Chicagoarea communities will share $245,000 in technology en-hancement grants. Statewide, 88 libraries will receive grants of $27,500 or $12,500, depending on the population they serve. These grants can fund hardware and software upgrades, expanded online collec-tions, digital devices, improved Wi-Fi, ADA-compliant websites, adaptive technologies for patrons with disabilities, and self-checkout systems.

Construction Grants

Over $500,000 in construction grants will be awarded to libraries in Calumet City, Frankfort, Glenview, Hillside, Oak Park, Woodridge, and Woodstock. The funds will assist with new construction, building addi-tions, or accessibility renovations.

New FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, DC- The FBI and the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) on July 1 announced the selection of the Ronald Reagan Building complex in Washington, D.C., as the new location for FBI Head-quarters. The announcement follows nearly two decades of attempts to find the needed space to meet the FBI’s mission and workforce requirements. Previous efforts focused on constructing a new suburban campus, which would have cost the taxpayers billions of dollars and would have taken years to construct. In support of the administration’s goal to optimize the federal real-estate portfolio, the GSA and FBI identified an ex-isting federal property. The Ronald Reagan Building complex provides a world-class facility that supports the FBI’s critical mission and saves money for taxpayers.

“FBI's existing headquarters at the Hoover building is a great example of a government building that has

accumulated years of deferred maintenance, suffering from an aging water system to concrete falling off the structure,” said GSA Acting Administrator Stephen Ehikian. “I am proud of the GSA's commitment to working with Director Patel and his FBI team to find a building that best supports their mission and their people.”

“This is a historic moment for the FBI,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. "Through our strong partnerships with members of Congress and GSA, we are ushering FBI Headquarters into a new era and providing our agents of justice a safer

place to work. Moving to the Ronald Reagan Building is the most cost effective and re-source efficient way to carry out our mission to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution."

“This move not only provides a worldclass location for the FBI’s public servants, but it also saves Ameri-cans billions of dollars on new construction and avoids more than $300 million in deferred maintenance costs at the J. Edgar Hoover facility,” said GSA Public Buildings Service Commissioner Michael Peters. “We are proud to partner with Director Patel to drive efficiency and improve the quality of space for a produc-tive workforce in service to national security and taxpayers.”

The Reagan Building complex is currently home to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and other tenants. The GSA will continue to support and work with CBP on space that allows them to fulfill their mis-sion while the transition of the FBI to the Reagan Building commences.

Chicago O’Hare Rejects Air France A350 Landing, Flight Turns Back

CHICAGO, IL- What began as a routine transatlantic journey became a dramatic mid-air saga for passengers aboard Air France AF136, bound from Paris to Chicago. On June 28, nearly seven hours after takeoff, the Airbus A350-900 reversed course over the Atlantic and returned to Paris—never reaching its intended U.S. destination.

The flight departed Paris-Charles de Gaulle at 12:49 CEST, cruising at 38,000 feet. For hours, the aircraft followed its expected route over the UK, Iceland, and toward Greenland. But around 16:30 CEST, every-thing changed. The jet made an unexpected U-turn over the ocean, leaving passengers stunned and con-fused.

Air France later cited “operational reasons” for the reversal. However, reports indicate the real issue: the aircraft lacked landing clearance at Chicago O’Hare International Airport—a rare and troubling lapse in aviation coordination. Clearance problems of this nature are almost unheard of in modern commercial aviation. They may stem from miscommunications between airline dispatchers, airport authorities, or government regulators. In a tightly regulated industry where every flight depends on permissions and timing, even one missed step can derail an entire operation. The flight ultimately landed back in Paris at 19:26 CEST, after 6 hours and 37 minutes in the air—without reaching its destination. Air France provided hotel accommodations and rebooked passengers on a re-placement flight the following day.

While the airline managed the fallout efficiently, the incident reveals how fragile international aviation remains in 2025. Airlines still face post-pandemic strain, staffing shortages, and evolving regulatory de-mands—all increasing the risk of disruptions.

The AF136 turnaround rippled beyond the aircraft. Families in Chicago waited without updates. Hotels in Paris scrambled for last-minute rooms. Businesses reliant on transatlantic arrivals faced unexpected can-cellations.

As global travel rebounds, this incident is a stark reminder: even with advanced aircraft and global net-works, aviation runs on precision. Airlines will likely reassess landing clearance verification protocols, and airports may strengthen coordination to prevent future breakdowns.

California Eases Driver’s License Renewal for Seniors with Clean Records

CALIIFORNIA- California has announced significant changes to its driver's license renewal process, particularly for residents aged 70 and older. Seniors with clean driving records will no longer be required to take the written or driving test to renew their license. However, this change is not automatic for everyone. To qualify, drivers must meet the following criteria:

• No serious traffic violations or accidents involving injuries in the past five years

• No loss of license points due to infractions

• No medical conditions that could impair driving ability, such as diabetes, vision impairment, or slowed reflexes

While eligible seniors can skip the written and driving tests, they must still visit a DMV office to take a vi-sion test and update their photo.

The DMV introduced this measure to reduce office wait times and streamline renewals for low-risk drivers.

DMV Director Steve Gordon stated, “If thousands of people can avoid going to the DMV or reduce their time there, the service improves for those who really need it.”

Not Everyone Qualifies

• Seniors with recent traffic violations or accidents

• Individuals with medical issues affecting driving

• Anyone previously convicted of DUI

• Drivers under 70 renewing after a suspension or penalty

This policy has sparked debate. Supporters view it as a show of trust in older adults, while crit-ics—especially traffic safety advocates—warn it could increase accidents. In 2024 alone, accidents involv-ing elderly drivers claimed 444 lives, though the annual average for the past decade stands at 616.

If the change does not improve efficiency or negatively impacts safety, the DMV may revise the policy. Still, if successful, this approach could inspire similar moves in other states like Florida or Texas.

Bottom line: If you’re over 70, live in California, and have a spotless driving record, you may skip the test and keep driving. If not, you’ll need to return to the DMV line.

Military Sends 200 Marines to Florida to Help ICE

FLORIDA- The Trump administration is deploying 200 Marines to Florida to support federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, U.S. Northern Command announced Thursday.

The move is part of a broader effort to bolster deportation operations with active-duty troops. Earlier this year, President Trump sent approximately 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines to California under Title X, a law permitting the use of military forces to protect federal property and personnel.

Last month, the Pentagon said it would send

an additional 700 troops to Florida, Louisiana, and Texas to assist immigration officials with logistical and administrative support. Of those, 200 Marines from Marine Corps Air Station New River in North Carolina will be assigned to Florida, according to Northern Command.

ICE will determine the specific roles and locations for the Marines.

Currently, about 100 National Guard troops are stationed at Florida’s immigration detention center, which Trump has dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.” Capt. Brittianie Funderburk, a spokesperson for the Florida National Guard, said the Guard is helping secure the perimeter and performing administrative tasks.

Man Sues for $1M Over Arrest While Recording Immigration Raid

LOS ANGELES, CA- The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) is demanding $1 million in damages from the federal government on behalf of a U.S. citizen allegedly wrongfully arrested while recording an immigration raid at a Home Depot in Los Angeles last month. MALDEF announced plans for a civil lawsuit, citing assault, battery, false arrest, and false imprisonment against Job Garcia, 37, a Ph.D. student and photographer. According to MALDEF, Garcia was tackled and detained by federal agents in the parking lot and held for over 24 hours without cause.

“Here, a citizen engaged in documenting government misconduct to encourage policy change was wrong-fully arrested and detained because of his race and his heroic efforts,” said Thomas A. Saenz, MALDEF president and general counsel.

NASA Astronaut Dr. Anil Menon Set for First Spaceflight in 2026

CAPE CANVERAL, FL – NASA announced on July 1 that astronaut Anil Menon will embark on his first spaceflight in June 2026, joining Expedition 75 for an extended mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Selected to NASA’s astronaut corps in 2021, Menon completed three years of intensive training with the agency’s 23rd class. He will launch aboard Roscosmos Soyuz MS-29 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, alongside Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina.

The trio will live and work on the ISS for nearly eight months, contributing to scientific research and ad-vancing NASA’s international partnerships in space exploration.

Though this marks Menon’s first mission to space, he brings deep experience in space operations. A U.S. Space Force colonel, Menon began his aerospace career as a NASA flight surgeon in 2014, supporting sev-eral Soyuz missions. He later became SpaceX’s first flight surgeon, playing a key role in launching the Crew Dragon for NASA’s Demo-2 mission and building SpaceX’s medical operations for human spaceflight.

Garcia was reportedly filming agents detaining individuals— many of whom appeared Latino—and advising them not to open their doors or speak.

The claim was submitted against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the U.S. Border Patrol, and other Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agencies. MALDEF asserts the arrest was racially motivated

and violated Garcia’s constitutional rights, including free speech, due process, and freedom from unlawful search and seizure.

DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin responded that Garcia assaulted and harassed a federal agent, leading to his arrest. Garcia was reportedly filming agents detaining individuals—many of whom appeared Latino—and advising them not to open their doors or speak. MALDEF alleges agents tackled him, threw his phone to the ground, and restrained him forcefully, causing physical injuries and emotional distress. He was later released with-out arraignment or charges. “This sends a message that the government cannot punish citizens for exercising First Amendment rights or tolerating abuse during public immigration raids,” said Ernest Herrera, MALDEF’s Western regional counsel. Garcia is seeking compensation for physical injuries, emotional distress, and lost wages.

India’s NCB Cracks Major Global Pharma Trafficking Network

WASHINGTON, DC — In one of the largest crackdowns on an international pharmaceutical trafficking syndicate, India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has arrested eight individuals and triggered enforcement actions across the United States, Australia, and Europe. The operation, dubbed Med Max, unraveled a so-phisticated drug smuggling network that spanned over 10 countries and four continents.

The probe began on May 25 with the interception of a car near Delhi’s Mandi House, where NCB officials seized 3.7 kg of Tramadol tablets from two B. Pharma graduates. Their confessions led investigators to suppliers in Roorkee, handlers in Delhi’s Mayur Vihar, and a logistics coordinator in Udupi. Data recovered from Udupi revealed 50 international shipments, mostly within the U.S. and Australia.

The NCB coordinated with international partners to trace the network’s global footprint.

Cindy Rodriguez Singh Added to FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List

DALLAS, TX— FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge Joe Rothrock, the Everman Police Department, and the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office announced today that Cindy Rodriguez Singh has been added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. She is the 537th fugitive added to the list and is wanted in connec-tion with the capital murder of her six-year-old son, Noel Rodriguez-Alvarez. Noel was last seen in October 2022.

On March 20, 2023, officers from the Everman Police Department conducted a welfare check at the request of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Dur-ing the interview, Rodriguez Singh falsely claimed Noel was living with his biological father in Mexico. Just two days later, on March 22, 2023, Rodriguez Singh, her husband, and six other children boarded an international flight to India. Noel was not with them.

On October 31, 2023, Rodriguez Singh was charged with capital murder in Tarrant County District Court. A federal arrest warrant was issued on November 2, 2023, charging her with Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prose-cution.

On August 29, 2024, the FBI offered a reward of up to $25,000. That amount has now been in-creased to $250,000.

“The disappearance and suspected death of Noel Rodriguez-Alvarez remains a painful memory for the people of Everman and all of North Texas,” said FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge R. Joseph Rothrock. “Adding Cindy Rodriguez Singh to the Ten Most Wanted list puts her face in front of the

world, and we be-lieve it will lead to her capture and return to the United States to face justice.”

“This is a powerful step in our unwavering mission to seek justice for Noel,” said Craig Spencer, Everman’s former police chief and current city manager. “We made a promise to this community that we would not stop. We urge anyone with information to come forward. Noel

deserves nothing less.”

“I commend the tireless efforts of law enforcement in this case,” said Tarrant County District Attorney Phil Sorrells. “We are hopeful Cindy Rodriguez Singh will be apprehended and brought back to face justice. My office stands committed to securing justice for Noel.” Rodriguez Singh was last seen on March 22, 2023, departing for India with her family. She was born in Dal-las, Texas, in 1985 and is 40 years old. She is approximately 5'1" to 5'3" tall, weighs 120–140 pounds, and has a medium complexion, brown eyes, and brown hair. She has multiple tattoos on her back, both legs, right arm, right hand, and right calf. She is believed to have ties to India and Mexico.

Established in 1950, the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list has helped locate 497 of the 537 individuals named— many thanks to tips from the public. Rodriguez Singh is the eighth fugitive connected to the North Texas region added to the list.

Anyone with information regarding Cindy Rodriguez Singh’s whereabouts is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALLFBI (1-800-225-5324) or the FBI Dallas Field Office at 972-559-5000. Tips can also be submitted online at tips.fbi.gov. Outside the U.S., contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Tips can remain anonymous, and confidentiality is guaranteed.

This investigation is being led by the FBI’s Fort Worth Resident Agency, in partnership with the Everman Police Department, Northeast Tarrant County Child Abduction Response Team, Tarrant County District At-torney’s Office, and Texas Rangers.

Reflecting on India’s Freedom Fight at Indian Diaspora Center Event

British authorities, Lall observed, described Har Dayal as “the most brilliant person born in India, the most dangerous revolutionary the British Empire encountered, and the most decent human being one could meet on Planet Earth.”

ELMONT, NY — The Indian Diaspora Center at the Dr. Thomas Abraham Library, in collaboration with the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) and the Indian American Kerala Cultural and Civic Center, hosted its 2025 Annual Diaspora Lecture and Interactive Session on June 22. Held at the Kerala Center in Elmont, the event focused on “The Role of America and the Indian Diaspora in the Freedom Movement of India.”

Author and speaker Dr. Bhuvan Lall delivered the keynote lecture following a welcome address by Kerala Center President Alex Esthappan. Dr. Lall captivated the audience with insights into the pivotal role of Lala Har Dayal and the Ghadar Movement, which operated in the United States and Europe during the early 20th century. Drawing on declassified intelligence reports and archival records, he underscored Har Dayal’s influence in challenging British colonial rule.

“According to timeworn intelligence reports,” Lall noted, “Hukumat-iBritannia considered Har Dayal the single greatest threat to the empire as long as he lived. The origins of Britain’s MI6 are intertwined with his life.”

Quoting Sir David Petrie, DirectorGeneral of MI5 and Chief of British Intelligence in India, he added: “No man in recent times has sinned more grievously against the [British] Government… than Har Dayal.”

British authorities, Lall observed,

described Har Dayal as “the most brilliant person born in India, the most dangerous revolutionary the British Empire encountered, and the most decent human being one could meet on Planet Earth.” Despite repeated efforts, the British government never succeeded in silencing or arresting him.

Lall also highlighted the legacy of Subhas Chandra Bose and explained how the Ghadar Party laid the groundwork for the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army), emphasizing

'Get the Hell Out': Councilman Denounces ICE Presence in Southington

SOUTHINGTON,

CT

— A recent federal immigration raid at a Southington car wash that led to the deten-tion of four workers has ignited a sharp political divide within the Town Council. At the June 23 council meeting, Republican and Democratic members clashed over the June 9 raid con-ducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at D-Hand Car Wash, 655 Queen St. ICE later confirmed that four undocumented workers from Guatemala were arrested, though no names, charges, or updates on their status were provided.

Reports allege that ICE agents did not display a warrant or identify themselves before detaining the indi-viduals, raising concerns from some council members.

Democratic Councilman Jack Perry, quoted in a news report saying ICE should “get the hell out of South-ington,” stood by his remarks when challenged by Republican Councilman Michael DelSanto. “Absolutely,” Perry reaffirmed. Republican Councilman Tony Morrison condemned Perry’s stance, calling it “irresponsible” and defended ICE's enforcement actions. He argued that jobs held by undocumented immigrants

should go to American citizens and highlighted that over a million people enter the U.S. legally each year.

Perry, who said he comes from a family of immigrants, acknowledged the need for border security but emphasized support for immigrants who “contribute to society.”

He also criticized ICE's approach during the raid, saying it was “scary” that agents, not visibly identifiable, detained individuals without notifying local authorities.

Perry proposed that the council direct Town Manager Alex Ricciardone to request future ICE operations be communicated in advance to the Southington Police Department. Council Chairman Paul Chaplinsky re-jected the idea, calling it “unreasonable.” Town Manager Ricciardone did reach out to Police Chief Jack Daly, whose response indicated the Board of Police Commissioners opposed soliciting communication from federal immigration authorities. Daly maintained it would not be in the department’s best interest. The Town Council, which has a 6–3 Republican majority, ultimately took no action on the proposal.

the Indian diaspora’s vital contributions to India’s independence struggle.

As a token of appreciation, Dr. Lall received two rare First Day Covers issued by the U.S. Postal Service dur-ing the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin in New York City in 1989, where GOPIO was founded. Featuring Mahatma Gandhi stamps, these covers commemorate both the diaspora and the his-toric event.

The program drew a diverse audience of community members, scholars, and prominent figures. GOPIO Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham chaired the session. Other notable attendees included GOPIO International Coordinator for North America Prof. Raj Vangapaty, GOPIO Council Chair for Seniors Mukund Mehta, and Kerala Center Secretary Raju Thomas. Officials from GOPIO and the Kerala Center also participated in vi-brant discussions on the diaspora’s historical role in India’s freedom movement.

Raja

Raises $3.1M, Triples Rival in Q2

SCHAUMBURG, IL- The Raja for Illinois campaign announced it raised more than $3.1 million in the second quarter of 2025—tripling the total of its closest competitor. The campaign now holds over $21 million cash on hand.

This strong Q2 showing follows an “eye-popping” $3 million raised in the first quarter, bringing the cy-cle-to-date total to over $6 million from more than 35,000 contributions.

The fundraising momentum comes on the heels of a recent internal poll showing Raja Krishnamoorthi leading the U.S. Senate field by 13 points.

“Our campaign is powered by tens of thousands of grassroots supporters who believe Illinois needs a fighter like Raja in the Senate,” said campaign manager Brexton Isaacs. “Raised in public housing and on food stamps, Raja knows what it means to struggle — and he won’t back down when Donald Trump threatens working families.”

Since launching his campaign, Raja has gained significant traction, hosting well-attended events across Peoria, Chicago, and Schaumburg, and securing endorsements from key Illinois mayors and prominent La-tino and AAPI leaders.
