HiIndia Reflects Indian Diaspora Hopes for PM Modi’s U.S. Visit
Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent arrival in Washington, D.C. for a highly anticipated two-day visit has sparked excitement and high hopes among the Indian diaspora in the United States. This visit, his first since Donald Trump's inauguration, is seen as a critical opportunity to address pressing concerns of the Indian community in the U.S. HiIndia, a weekly newspaper published from Chicago representing the vibrant Indian diaspora, highlights the community's expectations from Mr. Modi's visit. Upon his arrival, members of the Indian diaspora gathered outside the Blair House to extend a warm welcome, with one young fan even wearing a “Made in India” dress to mark the occasion.
The Indian diaspora is particularly keen on Mr. Modi addressing key issues related to immigration policies. Concerns about the renewal of work visas and the potential termination of automatic extensions have created anxiety among skilled Indian workers striving to maintain their legal status and employment in the U.S.
HiIndia underscores that the ongoing trade tensions and immigration challenges make this visit crucial. Community members have expressed their hope that Mr. Modi will advocate for clearer immigration policies and stronger bilateral ties between India and the U.S. During his visit, Mr. Modi is expected to engage with U.S. leaders on important topics such as trade, defense, investment, and technology. HiIndia emphasizes that the Indian diaspora is optimistic that these discussions will lead to enhanced cooperation and mutual benefits for both nations. As Mr. Modi navigates these critical issues, the Indian community in the U.S. eagerly anticipates positive outcomes that will strengthen their position and foster closer India-U.S. relations.

Unofficial TikTok downloads surge in the US
TikTok's uncertain future in the US has caused a surge in people putting the app on their phones through unofficial means, the BBC has been told.
An execuive order from President Donald Trump means the social media platform can be used in the US despite the Supreme Court upholding a law which will see it sold or banned. Even so, Apple and Google are preventing new downloads of the app meaning people are increasingly turning to a technique called "sideloading" if they want to get it for the first time or reload it to a new device.
Why Modi-Trump Meeting Matters for India
HiIndia Analysis: Why the Modi-Trump Meeting is Crucial for India
Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the US on February 13 signifies a pivotal moment in US-India relations. HiIndia, a weekly newspaper published from Chicago, analyzes why this meeting with President Donald Trump, just weeks into his second term, holds immense importance for India.
Mr. Modi’s visit marks the earliest by an Indian Prime Minister during any US President’s term in recent history. As President Trump navigates his domestic agenda and controversial foreign policies, including trade tariffs and the Gaza plan, India seeks to secure its interests.
Key Focus Areas for India:
Personal Rapport:
The well-established personal bond between Modi and
Trump, forged through events like the 2019 ‘Howdy Modi’ gathering in Houston and Trump’s 2020 visit to Ahmedabad, is expected to positively influence discussions. Their shared views on China and radical Islam, alongside similar leadership styles, further cement their partnership.
Immigration and Deportation:
A critical issue for the Indian diaspora, Modi is expected to raise concerns over the humane treatment of Indian deportees. With over 20,000 Indians facing deportation, the diaspora looks for assurances on legal immigration pathways for students, workers, and tourists.
Trade and Tariffs:
The Trump administration’s tariffs on steel and aluminum have posed challenges for Indian exporters. HiIndia highlights that Modi’s visit is crucial to negotiating fair trade terms, especially after India’s recent tariff cuts on American goods. Indian companies are also exploring energy imports from the US, potentially fostering economic cooperation.
Defense and Energy Deals:
The meeting could see expanded defense cooperation and new agreements on energy supplies. Modi’s pragmatic approach in lowering tariffs on US products like motorcycles and nuts demonstrates India’s willingness to engage in mutually beneficial trade.
India’s Strategic Role:
India’s unique position as a non-traditional ally but key strategic partner is evident in the US’s neutral stance towards it, especially in contrast to its rivalry with China. HiIndia emphasizes that figures like National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Senator Rubio’s pro-India stance could further strengthen defense ties. In conclusion, HiIndia asserts that Modi’s visit is not merely symbolic but a strategic step to bolster India-US relations, tackle pressing issues, and lay the groundwork for future cooperation during Trump’s presidency.
"Time For MAGA...": Trump, Ahead Of Meet With PM Modi
New Delhi: Donald Trump's 'reciprocal tariffs' Truth Social post early Thursday (6.46am EST, 5.16pm IST) - hours before he meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, D.C.has reconfirmed, if confirmation were necessary, that much, if not all, of the conversation between them will focus on import duties, and underscored the US President's continuing fondness to weaponise trade tariffs.
In a brief post, with the trademark selfcongratulation, Trump wrote, "THREE GREAT WEEKS, PERHAPS THE BEST EVER, BUT TODAY IS THE BIG ONE: RECIPROCAL TARIFFS!!!"
"MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!"
The 'reciprocal tariffs' post was an echo from Wednesday, when he committed to orders that could open new fronts
Trump's 'reciprocal tariffs' post was an echo from Wednesday, when he committed to orders that could open new fronts in a fast-growing trade war with other nations.
in a fast-growing trade war with other nations, including allies.
The US President has insisted that his 'reciprocal tariffs' system - essentially an 'eye for an eye' response to countries that have import duties on American products - is "the only fair way to trade".
The White House had said Wednesday that Trump's 'reciprocal tariff' plan could be announced before his meeting with PM Modi later today.
Should this, in fact, happen, it will be seen, at least by the Trump administration, as sending the world a message about the US' position on tariffs. Trump has previously called India a "very big abuser" on trade, and his top economic adviser Kevin Hassett singled out the country as having "enormously high" tariffs in a CNBC interview.
PM Modi To Meet Elon Musk In Washington
.
PM Modi's meeting with the Tesla and SpaceX owner will happen before the prime minister hold bilateral talks with US President Donald Trump. The prime minister reached Washington DC on Wednesday night.
PM Modi and Elon Musk have met several times. PM Modi also toured the Tesla facility in San Jose during a visit in 2015. Their upcoming meeting is likely to be different. Elon Musk has traversed a long way from 2015 when he was a supporter of the Democratic Party. He has emerged as a close ally and trusted adviser of President Trump and, in a concession from the President, he appeared in a joint news conference in the Oval Office on Tuesday.

Israel says Gaza ceasefire will end if Hamas does not free hostages by Saturday
There is growing concern that fighting could resume in Gaza after Israel's prime minister warned Hamas it would end the ceasefire if the Palestinian armed group "does not return our hostages by Saturday".
Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet met on Tuesday after Hamas said it was postponing freeing more hostages until further notice, claiming Israel had violated the terms of the three-week-old ceasefire deal. It remains unclear whether Netanyahu is demanding the release of all 76 remaining hostages, or just the three due to be freed this Saturday.
The group has demanded mediators address its list of complaints against Israel, including blocking vital humanitarian aid such as tents - a claim Israel has denied. It is understood Arab countries are exerting pressure on Hamas to try to get the deal back on track.
China Backs Palestinians, Opposes Displacement
Hamas responded by saying it remained committed to the ceasefire deal and that Israel was "responsible for any complications or delays".

Adani Exits $1 Billion Sri Lanka Wind Projects Over Tariff Dispute
India's Adani Green Energy has told Sri Lanka it will withdraw from two proposed wind power projects, the company said on Thursday, two weeks after Colombo said it was seeking to lower the cost of the power generated.
Sri Lanka began reviewing Adani Group projects after U.S. authorities in
November accused billionaire founder Gautam Adani and other executives of being part of a scheme to pay bribes to secure Indian power supply deals, charges the firm has denied.
Last month, the government said it had begun talks with the Adani Group to trim the cost of power from the projects, estimated to cost a total of $1 billion, to about $0.06 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) or less, versus an earlier figure of $0.08.
The group withdrew from the projects as they were "financially unviable," a Adani spokesperson said. "It was learnt that another cabinet-appointed negotiations committee and project committee would be constituted to renegotiate the project proposal," the company told.

Egypt has said it plans to present a "comprehensive vision" for the reconstruction of Gaza that does not involve displacing the population, unlike a proposal put forward by US President Donald Trump. Hamas's decision to delay this weekend's scheduled release had prompted Trump to propose Israel cancel the agreement altogether and "let hell break out" unless "all of the hostages" were returned by Saturday.
China on Wednesday reiterated its opposition to what it called "forced displacement" of Palestinians when asked about US President Donald Trump's plan to move Gaza's inhabitants elsewhere.
"Gaza belongs to the Palestinians and is an integral part of the Palestinian territory... We oppose the forced displacement of the people of Gaza," foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a regular press briefing.

PM Modi Meets Tulsi Gabbard in Washington, Discusses India-US Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with newly elected director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard after landing in Washington, D.C., on Thursday morning (IST). This was one of the first meetings among many in Modi’s packed US schedule, which also includes meeting President Donald Trump.
Sharing a glimpse of the meeting with Tulsi Gabbard, PM Narendra Modi said that he discussed India-US friendship with her and also congratulated her for becoming Trump’s Director of National Intelligence.
Amassive row erupted in Parliament today after several Opposition MPs alleged that parts of their dissent notes had been deleted from a Joint Parliamentary Committee's report on the Waqf Amendment Bill. The government trashed the allegation and said no dissent note had been deleted, but stressed that the panel's chairman has the discretion to remove sections that cast aspersions on the committee.
Eventually, following a meeting between Opposition MPs, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, a breakthrough was reached and it was decided that the dissent notes of Opposition members would be included in the JPC's draft report in their original form.
Speaking on the issue in Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said, "Many members have given their dissent note. Removing them from proceedings and keeping only the majority view is condemnable and anti-democracy."
Responding to the Opposition's charge, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said there is no deletion. "Don't mislead the House, Opposition parties are making an unnecessary issue, the allegation is false, JPC conducted all proceedings, no rule was violated," he said.

US President Donald Trump has taken steps to close the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), arguing that its spending is "totally unexplainable".

Trump to announce reciprocal tariffs ahead of PM Modi’s visit, confirms White House
US President Donald Trump plans to announce reciprocal tariffs before Indian prime minister Narendra Modi's visit on Thursday, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said on Wednesday, as quoted by Associated Press. Trump had earlier stated that he plans to sign an executive order that would impose US tariffs on other countries that would match the tax rates charged by the nations.
Earlier this week, President Trump said, “It’s time to be reciprocal. You’ll be hearing that word a lot. Reciprocal. If they charge us, we charge them.” President Trump, after taking office had mentioned his intentions to levy tariffs on countries such as India and Brazil though he has not yet mentioned exact details on the duties. Prime minister Narendra Modi will be visiting the US to engage in bilateral talks centring around trade between the two countries as well as Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration.
India is also preparing additional tariff cuts in order to encourage more American exports to India and avoid a potential trade war with the US, reported news agency Reuters citing unnamed government officials.

Trump says no exemptions with metal tariffs to start in March
Leaders in Europe and Canada have said they will not let Donald Trump's plans to hit their steel and aluminium exports with tariffs go unchallenged.
European Commission
President Ursula von der Leyen said the move would trigger "firm and proportionate countermeasures" while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also pledged to "stand up for" Canadian workers and businesses.
The comments came after the US president ordered a 25% import tax on all steel and aluminium entering the US, ending previous exemptions for allies including Canada and the EU and marking a major expansion of trade barriers. Trump said he was "simplifying" the rules and the measures

Santorini fears for summer tourist season as earthquakes hit island
February marks the unofficial start of the tourist season in the Greek island of Santorini - when the first cruise ships are due to arrive and the Easter holidays approach.
But with thousands of earthquakes shaking the island since January and experts unable to say when they will end, one cruise has already turned away and there are fears that the island's most important industry could be facing a difficult year. "In the past two days, we have seen a drop in bookings, but we hope this will be short-lived," says Antonis Pagonis, president of Greece's Association of Hoteliers.
would boost domestic production. Canada alone accounted for more than 50% of aluminium imported into the US last year. The tariffs will raise the cost of bringing the metals into the US, sparking concern among businesses in the US that rely on the imports and many world leaders because it will make it more expensive for companies to sell their products in the world's largest economy.
If the tariffs come into force as outlined, they are expected to have the most significant impact on Canada.Trudeau called the threatened tariffs "unacceptable" and he hoped talks with the Trump administration would resolve the issue without the need for dollar-fordollar retaliation.
"If it comes to that, our response will be firm and clear," he said. "We will stand up for Canadian workers, we will stand up for Canadian industries."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned "unjustified tariffs on the EU will not go unanswered".
"They will trigger firm and proportionate countermeasures. The EU will act to safeguard its economic interests," she said. "Tariffs are taxes - bad for business, worse for consumers."
Honda-Nissan multi-billion dollar merger collapses
Merger talks between Honda and Nissan have collapsed after the firms failed to agree on a multi-billion-dollar tie-up.
The Japanese carmakers, along with junior partner Mitsubishi, had aimed to combine their businesses to fight back against competition from rival firms, especially in China.
The merger would have created an auto group worth $60bn (£48bn), and the world's fourth-largest by vehicle sales after Toyota, Volkswagen and Hyundai.
The companies said they would continue their partnership on electric vehicles.
Karl Brauer, an analyst from online research platform iSeeCars.com, said the failure of the merger was not a total surprise."Plenty of automotive mergers have not worked out, and this one had as much potential for disaster as it did to help both brands," he added.
The planned tie-up was seen as providing Nissan, which for a while was Japan's second-largest car company, with crucial relief following years of
India-France to Finalize Rafale, Scorpene Deals by FY24
India's strategic partnership with France is poised for a significant strengthening, as two major defence deals are nearing finalisation. These agreements, worth almost Rs 1 lakh crore (Euro 10.6 billion), focus on the direct acquisition of 26 RafaleMarine fighter jets and the construction of three additional Scorpene-class submarines. The deals come at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on his way to Paris, further cementing the growing ties between the two nations. Sources within the government told The Times of India that the Rs 63,000 crore deal for 22 single-seat Rafale-M jets and four twin-seat trainer jets for the Indian Navy is currently under review by the Cabinet Committee for Security (CCS), awaiting final approval.

slowing sales and turmoil involving its top executives.
Honda entered negotiations in a leading position. It remains a popular brand globally, producing and selling more cars than Nissan.
Nissan, meanwhile, has struggled to recover from a leadership crisis since the arrest of former chief executive and chairman Carlos Ghosn in late 2018.
Mr Ghosn was dismissed from his post over allegations of financial misconduct, which he denies, and has lived as a fugitive in his home country of Lebanon after being smuggled out of Japan in a music equipment box.
Nissan announced cost-cutting measures last year, including shedding 9,000 jobs globally, and halving its current chief executive's pay.
Honda's boss Toshihiro Mibe had said any merger would be "based on the assumption that Nissan completes its turnaround action".The companies eventually disagreed on what role Nissan would play in the merger - equal partner or subsidiary.
Musk and his own AI startup, xAI, and a consortium of investment firms want to take control of the ChatGPT maker and revert it to its original charitable mission as a nonprofit research lab, according to Musk's attorney Marc Toberoff. US inflation unexpectedly increases
US inflation increased by more than expected last month, as higher egg and energy prices helped to push up the cost of living for Americans. Inflation rose to 3% in January, its highest rate for six months, and above the 2.9% expected by economists. The rise comes weeks after the US central bank decided to hold interest rates, saying there was significant uncertainty about where the economy might be headed. It poses a challenge to US President Donald Trump, who made tackling inflation a centrepiece of his election campaign last year.

IPL Franchise Gujarat Titans Get New Owners
Former IPL champions Gujarat Titans are set to have new owners as Indian business conglomerate, the Torrent Group, is in line to acquire a majority stake in the franchise. The Ahmedabad-based conglomerate will purchase a 67 per cent stake in the team from CVC Capital Partners (Irelia Company Pvt Ltd), who had bought the team in 2021. The deal is awaiting final approval from the IPL governing council, which would allow Torrent Group to take control ahead of the upcoming season, which will begin on March 21.
"The talks of Torrent Group taking two third ownership (67 per cent) is at an advanced stage. The lock-in period for CVC group as sole owners ends in February 2025 after which they are free to sell the stakes," an IPL source told PTI on conditions of anonymity. "Torrent group is one of the biggest names in Pharmaceutical sector in India and in 2021 when BCCI invited bids for two new teams, they had shown active interest. Obviously any change in ownership pattern requires approval from BCCI which is expected to be given in coming days," he added.
Rohit Sharma displayed no exuberance upon reaching his 32nd ODI century in Cuttack on Sunday. His subdued reaction, a simple bat raise after a brief hug with Shreyas Iyer, belied the significance of his achievement—his first century in 13 innings following a prolonged lean patch.
With expectations mounting, Rohit will aim to carry this form into the Champions Trophy, a crucial tournament in India’s pursuit of an ICC title. However, his long-term future remains a subject of debate. By the 2027 World Cup, he will be 39, and selectors must begin planning India's core squad soon. India has already outlined a strategy for next year’s T20 World Cup, and a similar blueprint for ODIs is likely in the works. Despite speculation about his future, Rohit has remained tight-lipped, occasionally showing frustration when questioned about it.
His return to form is significant not just for the team but for his own ambitions. A strong Champions Trophy performance could even inspire him to extend his Test career, especially with the England tour approaching.
After a disappointing seven-ball 2 in Nagpur, Rohit’s commanding 119 off 90 balls in Cuttack reaffirmed his aggressive yet selfless batting style. His confidence remains intact, as he stated in a BCCI video: “One or two knocks won’t change my approach.”
With his characteristic dominance, Rohit has proven he still belongs at the highest level. For him, it was just another day at work—but for Team India, it could be a crucial piece in their puzzle.
Bumrah Out of Champions Trophy 2025; BCCI Announces Key Changes
After a long wait over his fitness status, post suffering a back injury, India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been finally confirmed to miss the Champions Trophy 2025
Ronaldo Extends Al Nassr Contract
has reached an agreement with Al Nassr to extend his contract by another year until June 2026, an official with the Saudi club told AFP on Monday. The official said the sides have agreed on the renewable extension of Ronaldo's contract, "but it has not been signed yet. An announcement will be made over the coming days". Ronaldo turned 40 last week with his current contract due to end in June 2025.
Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of India's squad for the Champions Trophy 2025, BCCI confirmed late on Tuesday night. After a long wait over his fitness status, post suffering a back injury, India's pace spearhead has been finally confirmed to miss the tournament. The 23-year-old pacer Harshit Rana was named as Bumrah's replacement in the final 15-man squad.
In another selection twist, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was also left out of the final squad, with 33-year-old mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy being named in his place.
"Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men's Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah's replacement. Team India have also named Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad. The spinner will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal who was initially named in the provisional squad," the BCCI said in a release. Having suffered a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah had been advised five weeks of rest as confirmed by chief selector Ajit Agarkar. However, the 31-year-old seamer has not been able to recover in time.
Pacer Harshit Rana was handed his ODI debut during the series against England, where he has picked up four wickets in two games.
Denis Shapovalov Wins ATP Dallas Title
Canada's Denis Shapovalov completed a giant-killing run to the Dallas Open title on Sunday, defeating Norway's fifth-ranked Casper Ruud 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 for his third career ATP crown. Unseeded Shapovalov became only the fifth player since 2020 to knock out the three top seeds on the way to an ATP title and just the fourth player since 2009 to beat three top-10 rivals on the way to a 250- or 500-level title.

"Nothing To Buy, Will Take It"
Trump Doubles Down On Gaza Takeover Plan
The American President's plan to "own" Gaza and place it under "US authority" faced pushback from the visiting Abdullah II, who informed that Egypt was working on a plan for how countries in the region could "work" with Trump on his shock proposal.
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (local time) doubled down on his threat of the United States "owning" the Gaza Strip by displacing the 2.2 million Palestinians living in the enclave to neighbouring countries as he met Jordan King Abdullah II-- now of America's closest Middle East allies. "We're going to have Gaza. We don't have to buy. There's nothing to buy. We will have Gaza...We're going to take it, we're going to hold it, we're going to cherish it," Trump told reporters from the Oval Office as he met the Jordanian King. But Trump, who made his fortune as a real estate tycoon did however deny that he would seek to personally develop property in Gaza. "No. I've had a great career in real estate," he said. Trump, who had earlier said his plan to "take over Gaza" would not include a right of return for displaced Palestinians, now said the redeveloped land will be for people in the Middle East. "We're going to get it going eventually, where a lot of jobs are going to be created for the people in the Middle East. It's going to be for the people in the Middle East," he said. He added that Palestinians living in Gaza would be happy to leave because they are currently "living a terrible life" after more than a year of war following the October 7 terror attacks on Israel by Hamas. "Look at the way they're living now. Nobody's nobody's living like that in the entire world. They're living under buildings that are mostly fallen down and will continue to fall down, and they're living under people are being killed every day. The conditions are horrible. There are no conditions anywhere in the world that are worse than the Gaza Strip," he said.

The US leader stunned the world when he announced a proposal last week for the United States to "take over" Gaza, envisioning rebuilding the devastated territory into the "Riviera of the Middle East" -- but only after resettling Palestinians elsewhere, with no plan for them ever to return.
The American President's plan to "own" Gaza and place it under "US authority" faced pushback from the visiting Abdullah II, who informed that Egypt was working on a plan for how countries in the region could "work" with Trump on his shock proposal. "I reiterated Jordan's steadfast position against the displacement of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. This is the unified Arab position. Rebuilding Gaza without displacing the Palestinians and addressing the dire humanitarian situation should be the priority for all," Abdullah said on social media after the talks.
Trump has repeatedly suggested that neighbouring countries such as Jordan and Egypt could absorb Gaza's population. "We will be in Saudi Arabia to discuss how we can work with the President and with the United States. So I think let's wait until the Egyptians can come and present it to the President and not get ahead of us," Abdullah said.
The Jordanian monarch also appeared to offer a sweetener to Trump, who the day before the visit floated the possibility of halting US aid to Jordan if it did not take in refugees. "One of the things that we can do right away is take 2,000 children, cancer children who are in a very ill state. That is possible," Abdullah said as Trump welcomed him and Crown Prince Hussein in the Oval Office.
Trump replied that it was "really a beautiful gesture" and said he didn't know about it before the Jordanian monarch's arrival at the White House.
The American President also retreated from his previous talk of an aid halt to Jordan and Egypt, saying: "I don't have to threaten that. I do believe we're above that."
The Egyptian foreign ministry later said it plans to "present a comprehensive vision for the reconstruction" of the Gaza Strip that ensures Palestinians remain on their land.
It said Egypt "hopes to cooperate" with Trump's administration on the matter, with the goal of "reaching a fair settlement of the Palestinian cause".
Future Of Gaza Truce
Meanwhile, Israel has threatened to resume "intense fighting" in Gaza if hostages were not released this weekend, while Hamas insisted it remained committed to the ceasefire deal and accused Israel of violations. Under the terms of the truce, which has largely halted more than 15 months of fighting in Gaza, captives were to be released in batches in exchange for Palestinians in Israeli custody. So far, Israel and Hamas have completed five hostage-prisoner swaps. But the deal has come under increasing strain in recent days, prompting diplomatic efforts to salvage it and Hamas to say it was "committed to the ceasefire".
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that "if Hamas does not return our hostages by Saturday noon, the ceasefire will end, and the IDF (Israeli military) will resume intense fighting until Hamas is decisively defeated".
Ceasefire deal will be cancelled if Hamas doesn't release all hostages by February 15
UK Targets Indian Restaurants in Immigration Crackdown
London:
Reminiscent of US President Donald Trump's tough immigration crackdown, the United Kingdon's Labour government has launched a mass raids on illegal working in the country. Described as a "UKwide blitz", the crackdown has extended to Indian restaurants, nail bars, convenience stores and car washes which employ migrant workers. Ms Cooper's Office said that while its teams respond to illegal working intelligence in all sectors, a significant proportion of last month's activity took place at restaurants, takeaways and cafes as well as in the food, drink and tobacco industry.
PM Modi Meets Macron, JD Vance At Paris Dinner Ahead Of AI Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Paris on Monday, attended a welcome dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace.
New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Paris on Monday, attended a welcome dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace ahead of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Summit. Upon arrival, Mr Macron welcomed his "friend" PM Modi with a warm hug.
"Welcome to Paris, my friend @ narendramodi," Mr Macron wrote on X as he shared a video of the PM's arrival at the Elysee Palace for the welcome dinner. At the venue, PM Modi met several other world leaders who will be attending the AI Summit, including US Vice President JD Vance - the first such meeting of the two leaders after
China's 10% additional tariff on US cars went into effect on Monday against goods including vehicles with engines larger than 2.5 liters.
Mr Vance took oath last month. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) also shared photos of the three leaders interacting with each other during the welcome dinner. As PM Modi landed in Paris, he received a grand welcome from the Indian community. Visuals show the PM waving and shaking hands with them. "A memorable welcome in Paris! The cold weather didn't deter the Indian community from showing their
affection this evening. Grateful to our diaspora and proud of them for their accomplishments," he said.
This is PM Modi's sixth visit to France. In his departure statement, the PM said that the bilateral segment of his visit will provide an opportunity to review the progress on the 2047 Horizon Roadmap for India-France strategic partnership along with his "friend" President Macron.
US-China Tariff War Hits GM,
Ford, Mercedes SUVs
China's 10% additional tariff on vehicles with larger engines imported from the US took effect Monday as the two countries failed to reach a deal over the Trump administration's blanket levy on Chinese goods. The extra tariff went into effect on Monday against goods including vehicles with engines larger than 2.5 liters, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, bringing the total impost to 25%.
Exports of such vehicles are tiny relative to the number of cars that companies including General Motors Co. produce locally with joint venture partners. Manufacturers shipped about $3.1 billion worth of vehicles with larger engines from the US to China last year, according to customs data.
The additional tariff will apply to automakers including GM and Ford Motor Co., which are already struggling in China as local drivers switch to electric cars made by domestic manufacturers led by BYD Co. GM last year flagged more than $5 billion in charges and writedowns tied to its troubled China operations.
Mercedes - and to a lesser extent BMW - are modestly exposed to China's retaliatory incremental 10% tariff on SUVs and pickups imported from the US. Both German brands have made the US their global production hubs for SUVs, yet since 2022, the high-margin BMW X5 has been produced locally.
US Lawmakers Seek Probe Into Biden Admin Over Adani Action
Six US Congressmen have urged newly appointed Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate the Biden administration’s Department of Justice (DoJ) for indicting Adani Group officials. In November last year, Adani Group dismissed the allegations as baseless after the DoJ named the company in a case of alleged bribery. In their letter, lawmakers Lance Gooden, Pat Fallon, Mike Haridopolos, Brandon Gill, William R. Timmons, and Brian Babin criticized the previous DoJ’s decision, calling it a "misguided crusade"
that risked damaging US-India relations. They argued that the case involved alleged bribery preparations within India and should have been handled by Indian authorities instead of the US DoJ. The lawmakers questioned why the
Biden administration pursued the case despite no direct impact on US interests. They suggested that external influences might have driven the decision, complicating diplomatic ties with India. "This misguided crusade came at the risk of harming our relationship with a strategic geopolitical partner like India immediately preceding President Trump's return to the Oval Office," they wrote. The call for a probe highlights growing tensions over US-India relations and potential political motivations behind legal actions taken during the Biden administration.
Trouble is mounting for YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia over his remarks on the roast show India's Got Latent. While the 31-year-old has apologised for his crass comments, the row surrounding his remarks is snowballing into a major crisis. Following complaints from several MPs, a Parliamentary panel on information technology is discussing whether to summon Allahbadia. The podcaster may be issued a notice, seeking his appearance before the panel to answer questions linked to the row.

BJP Sweeps AAP Out Of Power In Delhi
HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hailed the Bharatiya Janata Party's big win in the 2025 Delhi Assembly election, declaring in a post on X that "development (and) good governance won".
"My salute and congratulations to all my brothers and sisters for giving a historic victory to BJP... I am very grateful to all of you from the bottom of my heart..." Mr Modi said in Hindi, "We guarantee that we will leave no stone unturned to ensure the all-round development of Delhi, and to make the lives of its people better... will also ensure Delhi plays an important role in building a developed India."
"I am very proud of all my workers of BJP who worked day and night for this massive mandate. Now we will be even more strongly dedicated to serving the people of Delhi," the Prime Minister said.
The BJP today stormed back to power in the national capital - for the first time in over two decades - after routing the outgoing ruling party, Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party. Mr Modi's party raced into a massive early lead as votes began to be counted this morning, registering leads in 50 of Delhi's 70 seats before the AAP fought back a little. But by 2.30pm, with over 85 per cent of the votes counted, the contest was settled; the saffron party was leading in 48 seats and the AAP 22.
'Sheesh
Mahal' To Liquor Case: Big Factors Behind AAP's Delhi
The BJP is set for a massive win in the Delhi Assembly polls, marking a sharp decline for the AAP, which had dominated the last two elections. Here’s what led to its downfall:
• Anti-Incumbency – After ruling Delhi for ten years, AAP faced growing voter dissatisfaction. While it made strides in education and healthcare, unfulfilled promises, especially on air quality, frustrated Delhiites. The BJP’s ‘double engine’ governance pitch resonated with voters.
• Sheesh Mahal' Controversy
– The extravagant renovation of
CM Arvind Kejriwal’s residence, escalating from Rs. 7.91 crore to Rs. 33.66 crore, became a major issue. BJP's relentless campaign branding it as ‘Sheesh Mahal’ dented AAP’s clean politics image.
• Liquor Policy Scandal – Corruption allegations over Delhi’s nowscrapped liquor policy led to highprofile arrests, including Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia. Constant legal battles kept AAP distracted from governance, weakening its position. These factors, combined with the BJP’s aggressive campaign, led to AAP’s massive electoral setback.
Trump Threatens More Nations with Tariffs After Canada, Mexico, China
President Donald Trump said Friday that he plans to announce reciprocal tariffs on multiple countries next week, escalating his trade war.
“I’ll be announcing that next week— reciprocal trade—so that we’re treated evenly with other countries,” Trump said. “We don’t want any more, any less.”
The move aligns with Trump’s campaign promise to impose tariffs matching the rates foreign countries place on US exports. He made the

"Rule Of Lies Has Ended": Amit Shah
New Delhi: The rule of lies has ended in Delhi, declared Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday as the BJP appeared set for a massive comeback in the national capital, defeating Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
"PM Modi in the heart of Delhi. The people of Delhi have worked to make Delhi Aapda-free by destroying the 'Sheeshmahal' of lies, deceit and corruption. Delhi has taught such a lesson to those who break promises that it will set an example for those who make false promises to the public across the country," said Mr Shah.

announcement during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, adding that auto tariffs were still under consideration.
As per the report by Reuters, Trump informed Republican lawmakers of his plans during budget discussions at the White House on Thursday. His administration sees higher tariffs on foreign imports as a way to help fund extensions of the 2017 tax cuts, which independent analysts warn could significantly increase US debt. Tariffs currently account for about 2% of annual US revenue, but Trump’s team believes increasing them could offset some costs.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the US on February 12-13 and meet President Donald Trump. This will be their first meeting since Trump’s return to the Oval Office last month.
Announcing the visit, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said Modi’s visit will give further impetus and direction to IndiaUS bilateral relationship.
Before visiting the US, Modi will be in France from February 10-12 to co-chair the AI Action Summit with French President Emmanuel Macron, Misri said.

Deporting 104 Indians Cost US Over $1 Million
On Wednesday, a US Air Force cargo plane landed in Amritsar, carrying 104 Indian nationals who had entered the United States illegally, according to a US government statement. But while the optics make for good political theatre, the flights are expensive -- as much as $1 million (Rs 8.74 crore) in the case of a recent deportation to India, according to an AFP analysis.

Trump Sanctions ICC Over Israel Probes
President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court over investigations of Israel, a close U.S. ally.

RBI Lowers Interest Rates for the First Time in 5 Years to Stimulate Economy
Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reduced its key repo rate for the first time in nearly five years to boost the economy. The RBI Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has unanimously decided to cut the key rate by 25 bps from 6.5% to 6.25%, Sanjay Malhotra said this morning in his first key address after taking over as the RBI Governor last December.
The MPC, which comprises three RBI members and three external members, had last reduced the repo rate in May 2020 and kept it unchanged in the last 11 policy meetings.
Mr Malhotra said the global economic backdrop remains challenging with the global economy growing below the
historical average. "High-frequency indicators are suggesting resilience in the global economy". The Indian economy is not immune to global headwinds, but it remains strong and resilient, he said. With receding expectations on the size and pace of rate cuts in the US, bond yields and the dollar have risen, he added.
Mr Kejriwal has claimed that 16 AAP candidates had received calls yesterday with an offer of Rs 15 crore to change sides.
New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal has accused the BJP of trying to poach his party candidates ahead of counting of votes for Delhi tomorrow. Hitting back, the BJP has threatened to take legal action if AAP doesn't drop the allegation. Mr Kejriwal, who has vowed to return as Chief Minister if his party wins the February 5 elections, has claimed that 16 AAP candidates had received calls yesterday with an offer of Rs 15 crore to change sides.
"In the last two hours, 16 of our candidates have received calls that if they leave AAP and join their party, they will make them ministers and will give Rs. 15 crores to each of them," Mr Kejriwal said in an online post.
Delhi minister Mukesh Ahlawat, AAP candidate from Sultanpur Majra, echoed the party chief's claims and said he too received an offer to change sides.
Judge Blocks Trump, Musk's US Government Downsizing Plan
Washington, United States: A judge on Thursday suspended a scheme masterminded by billionaire Elon Musk to slash the size of the US government by encouraging federal workers to quit through a mass buyout. The federal judge in Massachusetts ordered a temporary injunction on the plan's deadline -- midnight Thursday -- given by Musk for the country's more than two million government employees. The offer was to quit with eight months' pay or risk being fired in future culls.
The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has unanimously decided to cut the key rate by 25 bps from 6.5% to 6.25%, said RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra.
The RBI Governor said the real GDP growth for the financial year ending this March has been estimated to be 6.4%. He also estimated the real growth expected in the upcoming financial year to be 6.7% in Q1, 7% in Q2, 6.5% in Q3, and 6.5% in Q4.
Retail inflation in the current financial year is being seen at 4.8% with 4.4% in the last quarter, said Mr Malhotra, adding that core inflation is likely to rise but remain moderate.
Unions Sue Trump Admin Over USAID Cuts
Two unions representing employees of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) have filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump and his administration over the White House's plan to drastically shrink the department's staff.
On Thursday, USAID employees were told to expect the agency's staff to drop from about 10,000 to less than 300 globally, according to US media reports. The lawsuit filed by the labour groups in Washington DC argues the president does not have the authority to shut down the agency. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said the US is "not walking away from foreign aid".
No Legal Action Against Deported Gujaratis: Home Dept
Elon Musk's offer for the country's more than two million government employees was to quit with eight months' pay or risk being fired in future culls.
The deadline is now extended to Monday, when US District Judge George O'Toole will hold a hearing on the merits of the case brought by labor unions, US media reported. Musk, the world's richest person and President Donald Trump's biggest donor, is in charge of a free-ranging entity called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) that aims to gut the government. According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, more than 40,000 staff have so far accepted the buyout deal -- a relatively small number.
The State Home Department has made a significant decision not to take police action against 37 people from Gujarat who had illegally entered the United States. However, as part of the legal process, statements will be recorded from all individuals to gather information about the network of active agents involved in the illegal immigration racket in Gujarat. Based on this information, the police may take action in the coming days.
As part of the legal process, only the statement-recording procedure will be completed, and a report will be sent to the Home Department. Regarding the deportation of 37 Gujaratis who illegally reached the United States, the State Home Department has taken an important decision in the context of legal proceedings, stating that no action will be taken against those who traveled illegally.

Karan Johar Hindi Cinema Must Fix Gender Politics
Karan Johar has previously admitted to getting the gender politics completely wrong in his debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
The filmmaker now actively advocates for sensitivity towards gender representation in films. His last film as director, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, took special care in addressing these issues. In a recent interaction on Lilly Singh’s podcast, he discussed self-censorship and pay parity in Hindi films. He also acknowledged that female-led films in Hindi cinema are now getting bigger openings than maleled films.
Speaking about the importance of being sensitive to gender politics, he said, “If we can get our politics right… I am not saying always entertain. Cinema is meant for large scale, entertainment, visual spectacle, joy, everything that you are meant to feel but you can do it all without the wrong politics. You can entertain a large audience across the nation by just not propagating, positioning and platforming incorrect gender politics or incorrect social norms, incorrect ways of being. Just basics have to be followed.”
Mamta
He added, “Unfortunately, there is no censorship in the world that can help you, it has to be self-censorship. A film that doesn’t have right communication may still be a blockbuster but is that eventually a good thing, I am not sure.”
Karan went on to discuss the success of last year’s biggest blockbuster, Stree 2, and how its triumph was considered a victory for women. “When I see women achieving in India specifically, it is a small victory for the gender. When I see Stree, which is the biggest hit of the decade… Stree translates to woman. Of course, the men have to do a lot in the film but it is led by a woman.”

‘The Greatest Rivalry’ Relies on Nostalgia,
Misses Free Hits
The India-Pakistan cricketing rivalry stretches back seven decades, and no three-part series, with a runtime of 110 minutes, can do justice to such a vast stretch of history. The Greatest Rivalry, co-directed by Chandradev Bhagat and Stewart Sugg, pragmatically truncates its ambition to cover just three decades — from the ’90s to the present day. However, the disproportionate focus is on two tours — Pakistan’s return to India in 1999 and India’s visit to Pakistan in 2004. This means that the lionshare of iconic moments from Indo-Pak men’s cricket this century — Sachin Tendulkar’s tornado of
a knock at Centurion in 2003, the twin nail-biters at the 2007 ICC World T20, the high-voltage World Cup semi-final in Mohali in 2011, Virat Kohli’s miracle in Melbourne in 2022 — all go missing. As do most of the faces — there are no interviews with Tendulkar, Kohli, Rahul Dravid, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Misbah-ul-Haq or Babar Azam. For India, most of the talking is done by Sehwag, with Ganguly filling in the gaps. Ravichandran Ashwin and Shikhar Dhawan are given cameo roles that could have been performed by crisp captions.
Anubhav Sinha Reveals 18Year Silence with Ajay Devgn
In an interview, Anubhav Sinha insisted that he has not been in touch with Ajay Devgn and said, “We have never fought. He just doesn’t speak to me and I have no idea why. Since the making of Cash, we haven’t even met for me to tell you he ignored me or something. So, maybe, it’s just me overthinking. However, I did text him a couple of times, and never received a response, so I told to myself that maybe it slipped his mind or he must have missed my message. But, it’s been about 18 years since we have spoken.”
The Ra.One filmmaker went on to share that he assumes that some of his thoughts and opinions that he may have put across in public may have
resulted in this distance between them. “In between, I did comment on people’s political views, so I must have told him something too. But he was not the only person I commented about. I have said things to various people, but I still maintain good relations with them all. I am his admirer and I really respect him as an actor and individual,” he added.
However, all of this did not stop Sinha from showering praises on Devgn, whom he considers as one of our best actors and stars. “Ajay was among my favourite actors. I loved him both as an actor and an individual. He is fun to be with. He is like ‘yaaro ka yaar’. Ajay is always the first one to be there for a friend in need.”
Shraddha Kapoor: "My Father Didn’t Pull Strings

There has been no update on the Madhubala biopic since its announcement in March last year. Madhubala’s sister, Madhur, expressed her frustration, saying, “We are in 2025 now. It’s been nearly two years since signing the agreement, and I am still waiting for some progress or an update on the film’s start date or
muhurat.” Madhur revealed that despite repeated inquiries, Sony Pictures has only provided vague responses. “It’s embarrassing, but I have no answer about the film’s status because I have been waiting to hear from them for months. The delay is frustrating,” she said. Madhur and her team signed the agreement with Sony Pictures in May 2023, expecting a smooth process. However, she is disappointed with the studio’s lack of communication. “I didn’t expect this from a reputed company like Sony,” she remarked.

Shackled & Chained: U.S. Deports Indians, Sparks Outrage
“India, as a nation, needs to take a hard look at why some of its nationals from certain regions are willing to risk almost everything for the sake of the mere possibility of greener pastures in the U.S.” – immigration Attorney Alen Takhsh of Evanston, Illinois based Takhsh Law PC told Hi India
It was an image that no one anticipated seeing. Over a hundred Indians were seen being sent off on a military plane handcuffed, shackled and chained. While earlier photos of Guatemalan deportees were doing the rounds in India purported as Indians, when the news came that those pictures were not actually of Indians, everyone heaved a sigh of relief not expecting Indian illegal aliens to be transferred back as criminals but the bubble soon burst when the U.S. Border Patrol chief Michael W. Banks himself posted
a video on X showing a theatrical scene when Indian illegal aliens were sent back on a military plane. He wrote a warning, along with his post. – “If you cross illegally, you will be removed.” The post also read: “USBP and partners successfully returned illegal aliens to India, marking the farthest deportation flight yet using military transport. This mission underscores our commitment to enforcing immigration laws and ensuring swift removals.”

Chicago Doctor Accused of Animal Cruelty Over Malnourished Dog
HiIndia Newsdesk
CHICAGO, IL- A Chicago-based Indian American doctor has been accused of animal cruelty after a dog was discovered barely breathing inside a crate.
According to police reports, a cleaning woman found the severely malnourished Portuguese water dog, named Betty, inside a plastic storage bin placed in a bathtub. The incident occurred in March 2024 at a residence in the 2200 block of North Lakewood Avenue.
The suspect, 38-year-old Anita Damodaran, a practicing pediatric physician, was in the process of being evicted at the time.
"She had impact sores all over, urine burns, her fur was extremely matted, and she was probably surviving on her own feces," said John Garrido of the Garrido Stray Rescue Foundation.
Chicago police issued a warrant for
Damodaran on animal cruelty charges, and she was later arrested in Florida.
In court, advocates revealed that Damodaran claimed the dog belonged to her parents and that she was unaware Betty was inside the bin.
Despite the horrific circumstances, Betty has made a full recovery.
"She's fully recovered, she's in a new home, and she's living the life she deserves," Garrido said. Garrido and his wife, who founded the Garrido Stray Rescue Foundation, provide care and support for nearly 200 dogs annually.
Three weeks ago, 20 pet advocates gathered in a Skokie courtroom, demanding justice for Betty.

For a majority of Indians and migrants from across the world, it is becoming clear that this administration would mince no words when it comes to illegal immigration. As the scrutiny intensifies, there is a feeling of fear and the images further aggravated the already volatile situation. While in India the video with chilling music and background forced the opposition to demand answers, here in the U.S. it sent shockwaves even amongst the documented immigrants.

Trump administration to cut billions from overheads in biomedical research
HiIndia Newsdesk
President Donald Trump's administration has announced it will slash billions of dollars from overheads in grants for biomedical research as a part of broader cost-saving measures, a move some scientists say will stifle scientific advancements.
In a statement on Friday, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) said it would cut grants for "indirect costs" related to research - such as buildings, utilities and equipment.
"The United States should have the best medical research in the world," NIH said in its announcement. "It is accordingly vital to ensure that as many funds as possible go towards direct scientific research costs rather than administrative overhead."
The agency estimated that the cutswhich go into effect on Monday - would save $4bn (£3.2bn).
The NIH said on Friday that it would cap the rates grants pay for indirect research costs at 15 percent, half of the current average rate of 30 percent.

Using your phone in the toilet has been frowned upon by medical professionals, but more importantly—and more often—by our own mothers. Here are five neurologist-backed reasons why you should listen to your mom and ditch this bad habit once and for all.
“Numerous studies in neuroscience suggest that the habitual use of smartphones in the restroom can have detrimental effects on both mental and physical health,” said Dr Hema Krishna P, consultant, neurology and movement disorders, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru. The doctor listed five of them:
Prolonged Sitting & Circulation:
the act of engaging with a phone while in the toilet can lead to prolonged sitting, which is associated with various health issues, including poor circulation and increased risk of hemorrhoids.
Disrupted Bowel Movements:
the distraction provided by a smartphone can disrupt the natural process of bowel movements, potentially leading to constipation or other gastrointestinal problems.
Psychological Dependency:
This behavior can also create a psychological dependency on digital stimulation, making it difficult for individuals to engage in moments of solitude or reflection without the crutch of their devices.
Hygiene Concerns:
The bathroom is a breeding ground for bacteria, and handling a phone
Efficiency (Doge), an unofficial costcutting group that Trump has given leeway to slash government spending - has claimed some universities were spending above that 30 percent.
"Can you believe that universities with tens of billions in endowments were siphoning off 60% of research award money for 'overhead'?" Musk wrote on X. "What a ripoff!"
Meanwhile, scientists have voiced concerns that the cuts will impact vital medical research. The Association of American Medical Colleges said the
government's prior support of indirect facilities and administrative costs "allows medical research to happen".
The move will "diminish the nation's research capacity, slowing scientific progress and depriving patients, families, and communities across the country of new treatments, diagnostics, and preventative interventions", the group said in a statement.
Anusha Kalbasi, a lead radiation oncologist at Stanford University, which receives the grants, said the grants help “keep the lights on and ventilation

in this environment can lead to the transfer of harmful pathogens to the device, which is then brought into contact with the face and hands. This not only poses a risk to personal health but also undermines the cleanliness of the phone, which is often overlooked in regular cleaning routines.”
Fragmented Attention:
The constant engagement with digital content during these moments can contribute to a fragmented attention span, making it challenging to focus on tasks outside of the restroom,
thereby affecting overall productivity and mental clarity.
Dr Krishnamohan Y, clinical director of Bariatric and GI surgery, CARE Hospitals, pointed out that using your phone on the toilet itself is not a direct cause of haemorrhoids. “However, it can indirectly contribute to it or exacerbate existing haemorrhoids due to prolonged sitting. Engaging with content on a phone can cause distraction and lead to prolonged or strained bowel movements,” he said. Straining during bowel movements is a known risk factor for haemorrhoids.
flowing in our labs, keep us safe from biohazards, maintain the infrastructure for massive amounts of data, and employ the staff that help researchers focus on science. This would be a devastating hit even for institutions with large endowments.” The American Council on Education said in a statement that the grant funding for indirect costs have allowed universities to maintain "cutting-edge laboratories" and advanced technologies needed to stay ahead of foreign competitors and deliver breakthroughs in research.
The group's president, Ted Mitchell, told the Washington Post that some labs had already begun shutting down over the weekend in light of the news.
He said groups were expected to file a lawsuit over the cuts as soon as Monday. The suggestion to cap indirect research grant money was included in Project 2025, a "wish list" of conservative priorities written by the Heritage Foundation think tank.
"Congress should cap the indirect cost rate paid to universities so that it does not exceed the lowest rate a university accepts from a private organization to fund research efforts," the proposal states.
Six small lifestyle changes for a healthier heart
Stay Active
Engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise like walking, cycling, or swimming. Regular movement lowers blood pressure, boosts circulation, and strengthens the heart. Simple habits like taking the stairs or walking after meals make a difference.
Eat a Heart-Healthy
Diet
Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Avoid processed foods, trans fats, and added sugars, which contribute to obesity, high cholesterol, and inflammation—major risk factors for heart disease.
Quit Smoking & Limit Alcohol
Smoking damages blood vessels, reduces oxygen levels, and increases clot formation. Excessive alcohol raises blood pressure, weakens the heart, and disrupts rhythm. Cutting back significantly lowers heart disease risk.
Stay Hydrated for Better Circulation
Drink enough water to maintain proper blood flow and prevent clot formation. Dehydration can increase blood pressure and strain the heart.
Prioritize Quality Sleep
Aim for 7–9 hours of restful sleep each night. Poor sleep increases the risk of high blood pressure, obesity, and irregular heart rhythms.
Don’t Skip Health Check-ups
Routine screenings detect silent risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes early. Early intervention prevents complications and strengthens heart health.
Ex-Adams Aide to Plead Guilty in Illegal Straw Donor Scheme
NEW YORK, NY- Mohamed Bahi, a former senior aide to Mayor Eric Adams, has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy charges in connection with an illegal straw donor scheme, federal prosecutors announced. Bahi, previously a liaison to the Muslim community, was initially charged with witness tampering and ob-struction of justice for allegedly discussing the scheme directly with Adams. According to prosecutors, Bahi contacted the mayor hours after the FBI questioned donors in June, later telling a donor that Adams “believed” they would not cooperate with law enforcement. His plea signals that Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon continues to build a case against Adams, despite recent discussions about potentially dismissing charges against the mayor. It remains unclear if Bahi will cooperate with prosecutors. If he does, he would be the second Adams aide to do so, following Rana Abbasova. Another implicated aide, Ahsan Chughtai, resigned in October but has not been charged.
Prosecutors allege Adams knowingly solicited and accepted illegal donations, including some allegedly linked to the Turkish government, to maximize public matching funds. At a 2020 fundraiser, Bahi and Chughtai allegedly arranged $10,000 in fraudulent contributions, later instructing donors to lie to the FBI.

Housing Costs Grow: Many NJ Residents Struggling to Pay Rent, Mortgages
NEW JERSEY- New Jersey residents are facing significant challenges in managing housing costs, accord-ing to a new study.
Real estate and deed website Deeds.com analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey to determine the average delinquency rate across states, as reported by the Asbury Park Press.
Bahi also allegedly deleted the encrypted app Signal before allowing FBI agents into his home. Meanwhile, prosecutors claim to have identified more coconspirators and criminal conduct tied to Adams, with addi-tional charges and co-defendants likely before his April 21 trial.

The study revealed that over 6.6 million U.S. households are behind on mortgage payments, while more than 9.4 million renters are struggling to pay rent.
New Jersey ranked fifth in delinquencies, following Mississippi, Illinois, Delaware, and Wyoming.
Statewide, delinquency rates ranged from 11% to 12%, with 5.57% of New Jersey homeowners behind on mortgage payments and 17.7% of renters late on rent.
Indian Hate" Scandal: Krishnamoorthi Slams DOGE for Rehiring
Offender
SCHAUMBURG, IL – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi issued the following statement in response to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) rehiring Marko Elez, a staffer who resigned on Thursday af-ter a Wall Street Journal article exposed his history of hateful social media comments. Elez’s remarks, made as recently as last year, included statements such as “Normalize Indian hate,” “99% of Indian H1Bs will be replaced by slightly smarter LLMs, they’re going back don’t worry guys,” and “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool.”
On Friday, DOGE leader Elon Musk
and Vice President JD Vance publicly supported Elez’s rehiring, with Musk ultimately announcing his reinstatement. Congressman Krishnamoorthi stated: "There should be no place for racism and hate in our government—whether in the Department of Gov-ernment Efficiency or any other agency, office, or entity. It is appalling that the Vice President of the Unit-ed States and one of the president’s closest advisors would rally behind the reinstatement of someone who rightly resigned after his authorship of such blatantly bigoted remarks came to light.
Elon Musk and Vice President Vance have invoked the idea of forgiveness in defending Elez’s return, but true forgiveness requires acknowledgment of wrongdoing, genuine remorse, and a demonstrated com-mitment to making amends. To my knowledge, Mr. Elez has taken none of these steps, nor have his sup-porters called on him to renounce the hateful views he so recently expressed.
Our society should value forgiveness, but it must be accompanied by accountability and a complete rejection of bigotry in any form. Marko Elez’s apologists dismiss his remarks as those of a mere ‘kid’—yet he held a position of significant responsibility in government, one that required him to serve all Americans, including the millions of Indian Americans whom he sought to vilify. The Trump Administration and DOGE must hold themselves to a higher standard—just as our entire nation should.”

Tighter Immigration Rules May Lead to Wage Growth in NJ
NEW JERSEY — A crackdown on illegal immigration could push wages higher for American-born workers in New Jersey and four other states, according to a new Oxford Economics report. The study highlights potential labor disruptions in California, Florida, New Jersey, New York, and Texas—states that heavily rely on foreign workers. Shortages could impact industries like agriculture, construction, and hospitality. With an estimated 9 million undocumented workers in the U.S., including 428,000 in New Jersey, business-es may need to adjust hiring practices and raise wages to attract native-born workers. “Employers could again face worker shortages, renewing upward pressure on wages and inflation,” said Nancy Vanden Houten, lead U.S. economist at Oxford Economics.
However, Peter Chen of New Jersey Policy Perspective argues the study overlooks the broader economic contributions of immigrants. “The long-term impact of removing workers is substantial,” he said, citing their role in spending and tax contributions. In 2022, undocumented immigrants in New Jersey paid over $1.32 billion in state and local taxes. Experts warn labor shortages could raise food prices, as undocumented workers make up 20% of the agricultural workforce. “These are not jobs people line up for,” Chen noted. Reducing the workforce, he add-ed, ultimately shrinks the economy.

California Edison (SCE), a subsidiary of Edison International, is investigating whether its equipment played a role in igniting two wildfires in the Los Angeles area.
The wildfires, including the Eaton Fire, erupted on January 7, resulting in significant destruction, fatalities, and the loss of homes. SCE operates in the affected regions, and the cause of the Eaton Fire remains under investigation.
According to SCE, recent evidence, including video footage from external sources, suggests a possible link to its equipment. However, the company clarified that no conclusive indicators—such as broken conductors or burn marks—have been found to confirm its involvement.
As part of the ongoing probe, SCE plans to conduct a thorough inspection of transmission lines in the Altadena area. The investigation is expected to take several months.
SCE also provided an update on the Hurst Fire, which ignited near Tower 6 north of Saddle Ridge Road. While the cause remains under investigation, the company is cooperating with fire officials. The Hurst Fire, reported on January 7, scorched approximately 799 acres before being fully contained on January 16.

ICC Champions Trophy 2025: A Battle of the Best Returns
Dr. Nilesh D. Mehta
The ICC Champions Trophy, cricket’s elite competition, was designed to showcase the best of the best. Unlike the World Cup, which includes emerging teams, this tournament remains exclusive to topranked sides. However, it has faced uncertainty, delays, and even near extinction over the years. India’s Twin Triumphs: Rain & Redemption India has won the Champions Trophy twice—first in 2002, when rain washed out the final against Sri Lanka, and again in 2013. The latter, under MS
Dhoni, saw India edge past England in a tense, rainshortened final at Edgbaston. Ravindra Jadeja’s allround heroics secured victory, making Dhoni the first captain to win all three ICC white-ball trophies. 2025: Karun Nair’s Snub & ODI’s Identity Crisis
As the 2025 edition approaches in Pakistan, selection debates rage on. One notable omission is Karun Nair, whose white-ball skills are often overlooked. While India’s squad remains predictable, his ability to accelerate in subcontinental conditions could have been valuable.
Meanwhile, ODI cricket itself faces an existential crisis, caught between Test tradition and the T20 revolution. Can the Champions Trophy reignite interest? England, Afghanistan & Political Realities England, despite white-ball dominance, has never won this title, while Afghanistan eyes its first major ICC trophy. Meanwhile, political tensions mean India will play its matches in Dubai instead of Pakistan. With history, rivalries, and redemption on the line, cricket fans eagerly await India vs. Pakistan on Sunday, February 23.

St. Jude Launches First Pediatric Cancer Survivorship Data Portal
Scientists from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital have unveiled a groundbreaking data portal for shar-ing and analyzing pediatric cancer survivorship data. Integrating whole genome sequencing, treatment exposure, and outcomes, the portal houses 400 million genetic variants from over 7,700 childhood cancer survivors, marking an unprecedented advancement in research.
As part of the St. Jude Cloud ecosystem, the portal is free and open-access. St. Jude’s research has signifi-cantly improved childhood cancer survival rates, with about 85% of U.S. patients surviving five years post-diagnosis. However, survivors often face long-term health risks, including premature mortality, organ dysfunction, secondary cancers, and psychosocial challenges. By analyzing this unique dataset, researchers can refine treatment strategies and enhance long-

term care. “With just one click, researchers can now make new discoveries,” said Jinghui Zhang, PhD, St. Jude De-partment of Computational Biology. Previously, data organization took weeks— now, it takes minutes.
Key findings include variations in hearing loss risk from different types of platinum-based chemotherapy, a link between gene mutations and heart disease risk in African American survivors, and a novel correlation between mental health and limb amputation age.
“We aren’t just sharing data,” said Yutaka Yasui, PhD, St. Jude Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Control. “We are enabling analysis and visualization—an invaluable resource for the cancer survivorship community.”
Founded in 1962 by Danny Thomas, St. Jude continues its mission to treat children regardless of their background or ability to pay, earning national recognition for 17 consecutive years.
Releases Begin as Detention Centers Overfilled
WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is releasing migrant detainees daily as its detention centers exceed capacity due to increased arrests under President Trump, internal govern-ment data obtained by CBS News reveals. On Tuesday morning, ICE facilities were operating at 109% ca-pacity, holding nearly 42,000 detainees despite an official capacity of 38,521 beds.
On February 3rd, ICE released approximately 160 migrants, acknowledging that operational and legal challenges necessitate such releases. Some of those freed are fitted with ankle monitors for tracking. ICE stated that its intensified operations have
resulted in a surge in arrests, particularly targeting "criminal al-iens." The agency is working with CBP, law enforcement, and Congress to secure additional funding and expand detention capacity. Since Trump’s inauguration, ICE has ramped up arrests, reaching as many as 1,000 per day, compared to the 312 daily average under President Biden. However, limited detention space is forcing ICE to seek ex-pansion. Plans include 14 new detention centers, four large facilities, and the use of military bases, includ-ing Guantanamo Bay.
Meanwhile, CBP’s detention space remains underutilized, with migrant crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border at a five-year low, recording nearly 30,000 illegal crossings in January.

Trump Administration Sues Illinois and Chicago Over Immigration Policies
CHICAGO, IL- The Trump administration filed a lawsuit against Illinois and Chicago on Thursday, alleging their sanctuary city policies obstruct federal immigration enforcement. This marks the first legal action by Trump’s Justice Department against jurisdictions with such policies.
The 22-page suit, filed a day after Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a sanctuary directive, claims Illinois, Chicago, and Cook County deliberately hinder federal immigration enforcement and impede cooperation between law enforcement agencies. The administration argues these policies compromise public safety.
enforcement's role in civil immi-gration enforcement while allowing cooperation on federal criminal warrants. Chicago’s and Cook Coun-ty’s policies align with this approach.
The lawsuit challenges Illinois' Trust Act, Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance, and Cook County’s Policy for Responding to ICE Detainers. Illinois’ Trust Act (2017) limits local law
Mehtab Syed Named FBI Special Agent for Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE
CITY, UT - The Federal Bureau of Investigation has appointed Mehtab Syed as the special agent in charge of the Salt Lake City Field Office. She previously led the Cyber and Counterintelligence Division in the Los Angeles Field Office. Ms. Syed began her FBI career in 2005 at the New York Field Office, focusing on counterterrorism investigations and serving on both the crisis negotiation and rapid deployment teams. In 2008, she was deployed to Islamabad, Pakistan, as acting assistant legal attaché, facilitating international law enforcement and intelligence coordination.
From 2012 to 2013, she worked at FBI Headquarters’ Counterterrorism Division, overseeing extraterritorial cases in Pakistan and Afghanistan. In 2015, she became assistant legal attaché at LEGAT Amman before returning to New York in 2017 as a supervisor for the Joint Terrorism Task Force (NY JTTF). She later served as acting assistant special agent in charge of the task force’s Extraterritorial Branch.
Ms. Syed was promoted in 2020 to assistant special agent in charge of cyber and counterintelligence at the Newark Field Office. She then held leadership roles at FBI Headquarters and Los Angeles. Before becoming an agent, she worked as an FBI contract linguist and a financial analyst. She holds a finance degree from Adelphi University.
The suit seeks to block enforcement of these policies, escalating Trump’s efforts to push mass deporta-tions and penalize jurisdictions resisting federal immigration laws.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker’s spokesperson, Alex Gough, defended the Trust Act,
highlighting bipartisan support and compliance with federal law. He criticized the administration for undermining public safety, likening the lawsuit to Trump’s controversial pardons of January 6 rioters.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson vowed to defend the city’s policies, emphasizing that Chicago remains a welcoming city prioritizing resident safety. Johnson and city officials have consistently opposed Trump’s immigration policies.
Chicago has long resisted federal intervention, rejecting proposals to ease cooperation with ICE. Trump’s first administration also clashed with the city over sanctuary laws, making it a focal point for enforcement crackdowns.
Condolences for BSC President Haribhai Patel on
Wife Shardaben’s
Passing
CHICAGO, IL- Recently, Shri Haribhai and his wife, Shardaben, traveled to India, specifically to their home state of Gujarat. During their visit, Shardaben experienced a cardiac arrest at a friend's hospital in Amreli on the morning of January 6. Amreli, being her hometown, was a place of comfort for her. She had initially visited the hospital for a common breathing issue, but her condition took a sudden and severe turn. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, an air ambulance was immediately arranged from Mumbai to Amreli, and she was swiftly transported to Zydus Hospital in Ahmedabad. Despite the tireless efforts of the medical team, her condition remained critical. Following the cardiac arrest, valuable time was lost—nearly 10 minutes—before her heart could be revived. Unfortunately, this delay caused significant damage to
the main part of her brain. As a result of this irreversible brain damage and complications from the cardiac arrest, Shardaben passed away on February 12 at 9:30 AM. Shardaben was known for her unwavering dedication and service to the BSC Group. She was not just a pillar of strength in the community but also a loving and compassionate soul who touched the lives of many. Her loss is deeply felt by all who knew her. For Haribhai, this is not only the loss of a devoted wife but also a lifelong companion and true friend. She is survived by her husband, Shri Haribhai, and their sons—Ravindra, Shailesh, and Jayesh. In this difficult and tragic time, we pray that the Almighty grants eternal peace to her departed soul and bestows strength upon Haribhai and his family to endure this profound loss.
FBI Philadelphia Warns of Romance Scams Ahead of Valentine’s Day
PHILADELPHIIA, PA- With Valentine’s Day approaching, the FBI Philadelphia Field Office warns the public to stay vigilant against romance and confidence fraud schemes, which occur yearround.
In these scams, criminals create fake online identities to gain a victim’s trust—whether romantic, familial, or friendly—before manipulating them into sending money or personal information. These fraudsters ap-pear genuine and caring, often using social media to gather details and establish quick connections. "Romance scammers aim to be your ‘perfect match,’ but their true intent is financial exploitation," said Wayne A. Jacobs, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Philadelphia. "Be cautious when forming online relationships and report suspected scams to the FBI."
Cryptocurrency Investment Scams
As cryptocurrency gains popularity, scammers increasingly exploit it. After building trust, they lure victims with fake investment opportunities, directing them to fraudulent sites that promise high returns. When vic-tims try to withdraw funds, they face fabricated fees or taxes. Eventually, the scammer disappears with the money.
Protect Yourself:
• Never send money, cryptocurrency, or gift cards to someone you’ve only met online.
• Avoid moving conversations off reputable dating platforms too soon.
• Verify identities through online searches.
• Be wary of overseas contacts with excuses for not meeting in person.
If you are the victim of a romance scam, file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (ic3.gov).

Trump’s EPA Cuts 1,000 Jobs, 100 in Chicago Region
CHICAGO, IL- In an unprecedented move, the Trump administration’s EPA leadership is initiating mass fir-ings of all probationary employees—impacting over 1,000 workers nationwide, including more than 100 at the Great Lakes EPA Region 5 office in Chicago.
Nicole Cantello, President of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 704, which represents approximately 1,000 EPA employees across six Midwestern states, issued the following state-ment: “This sweeping attack on the EPA workforce is unprecedented in scope and scale. EPA cannot afford to lose these dedicated employees, who are essential to protecting human health and the environment. They remove lead from drinking water, enforce critical environmental laws like the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act, restore contaminated land, and clean up toxic
Superfund sites. Administrator Lee Zeldin should understand that firing them endangers the American public. He and his boss will be held accountable for the harm their actions cause.”
Probationary employees—those who have not completed their one-year term—have limited options to contest such dismissals, which are typically handled individually. The EPA has not clarified how it will man-age critical environmental work with such a significant reduction in staff.
Simultaneously, the agency is pressuring current employees to retire or resign, potentially leading to a severe slowdown or even a shut-down of its operations in the Great Lakes region.
AFGE Local 704 represents EPA Region 5 employees across Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. They were at the forefront of previous battles to defend the agency during the Trump ad-ministration.
