Washington: Hours after US President Donald Trump's crippling 50 per cent tariff on India came into effect, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro labelled the Russia-Ukraine conflict "Modi's war," claiming it was New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian energy that was fuelling Moscow's military aggression. Pressuring
Navarro claimed Moscow used money from New Delhi's 'discounted' crude purchase to "fund its war machine."
India to halt Russian trade, he said New Delhi could see a 25 per cent reduction in US tariffs if it stops buying discounted crude from Moscow.
In an interview with Bloomberg Television, Navarro referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, "I mean Modi's war because the road to peace runs, in part, through New Delhi." The remarks came after Trump's 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods took effect earlier Wednesday, a bid the US President has linked to New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil. It doubled the existing 25 per cent US duty imposed earlier this month. Navarro claimed Moscow used money from New Delhi's 'discounted' crude purchase to "fund its war machine." That, in turn, has taxed US resources in the form of requests from Kyiv for arms and funding, he argued.
A tragic shooting occurred Wednesday at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, where 23-year-old Robin Westman opened fire on children attending a church service, killing two students and injuring others. Westman, who legally purchased the weapons and had no known criminal record, used a rifle, shotgun, and pistol, firing dozens of rounds before being found
Washington: Two Microsoft employees were fired on Wednesday after taking part in a sit-in at the office of the company's president to protest the firm's ties to Israel as it wages war in Gaza. A Microsoft spokesperson said the workers were terminated following "serious breaches of company policies and our code of conduct" stemming from "the break-in at the executive offices."
Anna Hattle and Riki Fameli received voicemails informing them that they were fired, the protest group No Azure for Apartheid said in a statement.
They were among seven protesters who were arrested on Tuesday after occupying the office of company President Brad Smith. The other five were former Microsoft workers and people outside the company.
"We are here because Microsoft continues to provide Israel with the tools it needs to commit genocide while gaslighting and misdirecting its own workers about this reality," Hattle said in a statement on Wednesday.
dead in the parking lot from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. Westman, formerly named Robert and who legally changed their name in 2020, identified as female. Videos from a now-deleted YouTube channel, "Robin W," show weapons, ammunition, and magazines inscribed with chilling messages, including “Kill Donald Trump,” “Kill Trump Now,” and “Nuke India.” Other writings included “Israel must fall,” “Burn Israel,” “For the children,” and “Where is your God?” Names of previous school shooters and some Cyrillic text were also visible. One video included a letter to Westman’s family, apologizing for the consequences of the shooting. Homeland Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the video’s authenticity, calling the act by the “deeply sick murderer” unthinkable. Authorities said Westman acted alone.
In response, President Donald Trump ordered U.S. flags flown at half-staff. This shooting marks the 146th such school-related incident in the U.S. this year, highlighting ongoing concerns over gun violence and extremist messages.
President Donald Trump said he was prepared for a legal fight with Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook after he moved to oust her from her post following allegations that she falsified mortgage documents.
The Fed, weighing in for the first time this week, said it would abide by any court decision in Cook's legal challenge of her dismissal by Trump. A Fed spokesperson added the central bank has deferred any decision on Cook's current working status, and noted there is no official business before the Fed board this week.
"Lisa Cook has indicated through her personal attorney that she will promptly challenge this action in court and seek a judicial decision that would confirm her ability to continue to fulfill her responsibilities as a Senate-confirmed member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System," the Fed said in a statement.
Washington: Democrats in the US House Foreign Affairs Committee have slammed President Donald Trump and his administration for singling out India over its purchase of Russian oil, even as China-- one of Moscow's largest crude exporters-- faces no such penalties. The democrats said Trump's 50 per cent tariffs on Indian imports are "hurting Americans" and "sabotaging the US-India" ties, built over the past two decades of bipartisan efforts.
"Instead of imposing sanctions on China or others purchasing larger amounts of Russian oil, Trump's singling out India with tariffs, hurting Americans and sabotaging the US-India relationship in the process," the Democrats said in a statement on X.
"It's almost like it's not about Ukraine at all," they added.
Consumers already shelling out more for their morning cups of coffee can't catch a break, as tariffs fuel price hikes and put futures markets on track for the biggest monthly gain in over a decade.
JM Smucker Co., owner of the Folgers and Cafe Bustelo brands, said on Wednesday it plans to hike coffee prices in early winter to keep up with increased tariffs. That's just the latest sign that consumer prices for roasted coffee will likely keep topping records because of levies on shipments from Brazil, the world's biggest coffee producer.
Mexico City: Mexico said Wednesday its postal service was suspending package shipments to the United States ahead of an end to the exemption on tariff duties for lowvalue packages by the Trump administration.
The announcement follows similar moves by postal services from the European Union and several other countries to pause shipping as they await more clarity on the US measure. It also comes during monthslong negotiations between the Mexican government and the Trump administration to avoid wider tariffs. The exemption — known as the “ de minimis” exemption, which allows packages worth less than $800 to come into the US duty free — is ending Friday.
North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un will attend a military parade in Beijing next week alongside Russia's Vladimir Putin, China has said, in what will be a landmark visit.
This is Kim's first multilateral international meeting, making the event a diplomatic win for China's Xi Jinping who has been pushing for a new Beijing-led world order.
It allows Xi to signal his influence –although limited – on both Putin and Kim at a time when Washington is attempting to make a deal with Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump is not attending but said earlier this week that he wanted to meet Kim, whose growing nuclear arsenal and support for Russia have rattled the West.
China's "Victory Day" parade will mark the 80th anniversary of Japan's
China said on Wednesday that it is "unreasonable and unrealistic" to ask the country to join nuclear disarmament negotiations with the United States and Russia.
Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, made the remarks after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had discussed nuclear arms control with Russian President Vladimir Putin and wanted China to be involved too.
Argentina’s Ambassador to India, Mariano Caucino, confirmed the development on X, calling it a "wonderful news".
Argentina has announced relaxed visa rules for Indian nationals holding valid US tourist visas. According to a resolution published in Argentina’s Official Gazette, Indian passport holders with valid US tourist visas can now enter Argentina without applying separately for an Argentine visa. Confirming the development, Argentina’s Ambassador to India Mariano Caucino wrote on X: “The Argentine Government has eased entry into the country for Indian citizens with US visas.”
surrender in World War Two and the end of the conflict.
Putin and Kim will be among 26 other heads of state who are expected to attend the parade. This is the first time a North Korean leader has attended a Chinese military parade since 1959.
China is likely to display its latest weaponry, including hundreds of aircraft, tanks and anti-drone systems. This will be the first time its military's new force structure is being fully showcased in a parade.
Twelve people including three children have been killed and dozens more wounded in a heavy overnight Russian bombardment of Kyiv, Ukrainian officials say.
Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv's military administration said more than 20 locations had been hit in districts across the capital, and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on Telegram that the dead included two children.
The Kremlin had chosen "ballistics instead of the negotiating table", said President Volodymyr Zelensky, who reiterated the need for "new, tough sanctions" on Russia.
Ukrainian forces said Russia had fired almost 600 drones and more than 30 ballistic and cruise missiles - the biggest attack on the capital this month.
Diplomats in Southeast Asia were targeted in a cyber-espionage campaign earlier this year, likely waged in support of operations aligned with the strategic interests of China, according to Google.
The attacks, using social engineering and malware disguised as innocuous software updates, are attributed to the China-linked UNC6384 group, Alphabet Inc.'s Google Threat Intelligence Group said on Monday, citing technical evidence. The "UNC" term applies to hacking activity that is linked but not yet categorized under another group.
About two dozen victims downloaded malware, according to Patrick Whitsell, a senior security engineer at Google. While Google did not specify the nationalities of the affected diplomats, Whitsell told Bloomberg News in an interview that he has high confidence that the attacker is "China-aligned." Those people can be either inside the government or outside contractors, he added.
The US has told Denmark to "calm down" after the top US diplomat in Copenhagen was summoned over claims that Americans had been conducting covert operations in Greenland. Denmark's public broadcaster DR quoted sources as saying the aim was to infiltrate society and promote its secession from Denmark to the US, although it was unable to clarify who the men were working for.
A White House official would not confirm an influence campaign was underway, but said: "We think the Danes need to calm down."
Turkish first lady appeals to Melania Trump over Gaza children
Turkey's first lady has urged Melania Trump to speak out for children suffering in Israel's war in Gaza.
Emine Erdogan praised the US first lady's support for children affected by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, asking Trump to "extend the advocacy" to Palestinians.
In a letter published by the Turkish presidency on Saturday, Mrs Erdogan said Gaza had become a '"children's cemetery", telling Mrs Trump: "We must unite our voices and strength against this injustice."
Value of small parcels sent from China to UK hits £3bn
The value of small parcels shipped from China to the UK under an import tax exemption more than doubled last year to £3bn, exclusive data obtained by the BBC shows. Chinese e-commerce giants such as Shein and Temu are thought to be drivers of this increase as sales of cheap goods to online shoppers in the UK continue to rise.
Government sources said that the current situation is a temporary one in an otherwise long-term relationship between the US and India.
After an additional 25 per cent tariff as penalty for India's purchase of Russian oil came into effect on Wednesday, government sources have said that efforts are underway to resolve the ongoing discord between India and the US. They said that the current situation is a temporary one in an otherwise long-term relationship between the two countries. They further stated that exporters do not need to panic as the impact of US tariffs are unlikely to be severe. This is because of India's diversified export base. Total tariffs on India now reach as high as 50 per cent, sharing top spot with Brazil.
Two-thirds of India's exports to the US - worth over $60 billion annually - are now in the tariff net.
Japan's top trade negotiator abruptly cancelled a trip to Washington aimed at issuing a joint statement on a tariffs deal with the Trump administration, as a top government spokesman urged the US side to speed up implementation of the agreement. Trade envoy Ryosei Akazawa was scheduled to leave Tokyo for Washington on Thursday for a 10th round of talks, following up on the agreement announced on July 22.
Russia's ambassador to the UK is being summoned by the Foreign Office after strikes on Kyiv killed at least 15 people, including four children.
It's expected Andrey Kelin will meet officials, not ministers - PM Keir Starmer earlier accused Moscow of "sabotaging hopes of peace" with its "senseless" attacks
Donald Trump's top economic adviser has warned that if India fails to curb its Russian crude trade, the US President will not ease his stance on Washington's punitive tariffs on Indian imports. US National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett called trade negotiations with New Delhi "complicated", as he accused India of "intransigence" in opening its markets to American products.
"If the Indians don't budge, I don't think President Trump will," he said. The United States on Wednesday doubled tariffs on Indian goods to a staggering 50 per cent, the highest for any country other than Brazil. This includes a 25 per cent additional duty for India's purchase
of Russian crude oil.
Hassett said trade negotiations with India were "complicated", claiming part of it "has been tied to the pressure we've been trying to put on Russia in
India’s upcoming Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms, aimed at lowering rates and boosting private consumption, could offset the impact of US tariffs, according to BMI, a Fitch Solutions company. The reforms, including a rationalised two-slab structure, are expected to drive consumption and improve profitability in sectors such as automobiles, financial services, cement, and consumer staples. Despite US tariffs affecting certain industries, India’s GDP is projected to remain above 6 per cent, keeping the country among Asia’s fastest-growing emerging markets. BMI forecasts growth to gradually slow to just above 6 per cent by the decade’s end, slightly
BMI, a Fitch Solutions company, said India is likely to remain one of the fastestgrowing emerging market economies in Asia through this decade.
below the 2010–2019 pre-pandemic average of 6.5 per cent. Productivity is expected to grow around 5 per cent, sustaining economic momentum. BMI also noted that a 25-percentage point reciprocal tariff increase could reduce real GDP growth by 0.2 per cent in FY2025/26 and FY2026/27, but the GST reforms could offset this drag. SBI Research reported that GST reforms combined with recent income tax cuts could boost consumption by Rs 5.31 lakh crore, around 1.6 per cent of GDP. Fitch Ratings reaffirmed India’s ‘BBB’ rating with a stable outlook, highlighting that the US tariffs are likely to have only a limited impact on overall growth, while GST reforms present a potential upside for the economy.
Linking India-US trade negotiations to a marathon, Hassett said talks require a long-term outlook and acceptance of "ebbs and flows" before New Delhi and Washington reach the final position.
order to secure a peace deal and save millions of lives. And then there's the Indian intransigence about opening their markets to our products."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Tokyo on August 29–30 for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit with PM Shigeru Ishiba. Japan will announce a $68 billion Economic Security Initiative over the next decade, boosting semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, clean energy, and manufacturing.
The partnership has already yielded 170+ MoUs worth $13 billion across steel, automotive, renewables, aerospace, and real estate. Japanese firms like Suzuki, Toyota, Nippon Steel, and Fujitsu are expanding operations, integrating Indian SMEs into global supply chains, and supporting green energy projects, including biogas plants.
Talent exchange programmes are also strengthening human capital ties between the two nations.
New Delhi: Gaming company A23 has challenged the government's ban on online money-based games, a legal filing shows, in the first case against a law that led to the sudden shutdown of popular contests and has thrown the industry's future into doubt.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government issued a law last week to ban such games, which the industry says rely on skill and are therefore not gambling. Gambling was already highly restricted in India.
The legislation is a setback for an industry backed by venture capital firms such as Tiger Global and Peak XV Partners, and that was on track to be worth $3.6 billion in India by 2029, according to industry estimates.
Tankers carrying Russian oil are heading towards Indian ports even as the US tariff guillotine descends with savage brutality Wednesday morning.
Initial indications are that India’s buying is about to drop sharply in August from the two earlier months. But first glances can be deceptive.
Oil industry experts reckon that Russian crude currently on its way to India is about 1 million barrels per day (bpd) for August. That's around 40 per cent lower than India’s purchases in June and July.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi refused to take four calls from American President Donald Trump in recent weeks, against the backdrop of the tariff row, German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) has reported, citing sources. The report suggests that this was the result of the "depth of his [Modi's] anger, but also his caution".
A Japanese newspaper, Nikkei Asia, has made similar claims, saying Prime Minister Modi was avoiding Trump's calls, "heightening Trump's frustration."
Washington: A staggering 50 per cent US tariffs took effect on many Indian products on Wednesday, doubling an existing 25 per cent duty as American President Donald Trump sought to punish New Delhi for buying Russian oil, escalating tensions between the world's two largest democracies and strategic partners. Trump has raised pressure on India over the energy purchases, as part of the US campaign to end the conflict in Ukraine. He imposed a punitive 25 per cent tariff due to India's purchases of Russian oil, over a prior 25 per cent US duty on many products from India.
It takes total duties as high as 50 per cent for goods such as garments, gems and jewellery, footwear, sporting goods, furniture and chemicals - among the highest imposed by the U.S. and on par with Brazil and China.
India Braces For Impact
India has asserted its resilience to stand firm against US pressure, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowing he would "never compromise" the interests of the country's farmers. Per a government estimate, tariffs will impact $48.2 billion worth of exports. Officials have warned that the new duties could make shipments to the US commercially unviable, triggering job losses and slower economic growth. PM Modi responded to Trump’s 50% tariffs on India by announcing tax cuts and a simplified GST to ease economic impact. He urged “Make in India” initiatives, promoted self-reliance, and signaled a gradual approach to Russian oil imports, stressing decisions will be made in India’s national interest.
Starting today, Indian exporters face one of the harshest trade actions in recent memory as the US doubles duties on Indian goods, imposing a 50% tariff. This follows an existing 25% levy, with the additional 25% targeting India’s continued purchases of Russian oil and military equipment.
Economic analysts warn the impact will be severe. Nearly two-thirds of India’s exports to the US, worth around $60 billion, will now fall under the new tariff, raising costs and reducing competitiveness. Labour-intensive
sectors such as textiles, gems and jewellery, carpets, shrimp, and furniture are particularly vulnerable, with small and medium businesses at risk and potential job losses looming.
Exporters stress the dilemma: curbing Russian oil imports would harm India’s economy, while continuing purchases invites US tariff penalties. Former ICAI President Ved Jain noted it is a choice between two economic challenges. The tariffs could also backfire on the US, raising domestic prices and slowing growth. India’s exports to the US, currently $86.5 billion, are projected to fall to $49.6 billion by FY26, while competitors like China, Vietnam, Mexico, and Turkey are poised to fill the gap. Analysts say the fallout threatens jobs, growth, and long-term industrial competitiveness in India.
‘It’s a scam’: Trump’s commerce secretary calls for change in Green Card, H1-B visa system
Washington, Aug 27: US Commerce Secretary slammed the country’s Green Card and H1-B visa system on Tuesday, calling it “a scam” that unfairly benefits outsourcing companies and foreign workers at the cost of American professionals.
Speaking at a policy forum in Washington, the Secretary argued that the decades-old system is “broken” and needs urgent reform to protect US jobs and ensure that “the brightest minds, not the cheapest labor,” enter the country.
“The H1-B program was designed to fill genuine skill gaps, but has instead been exploited by large outsourcing firms who flood the system, pushing aside qualified Americans,” he said.
The Green Card backlog, which has left hundreds of thousands of applicants—especially from India and China—waiting for years, was also criticized. The Secretary suggested a merit-based immigration framework tied to skills, innovation, and national interest, rather than “a lotterydriven or employer-manipulated system.”
The remarks come amid rising tensions between the US administration and tech companies that rely heavily on foreign talent. Industry groups warn that restricting H1-Bs could harm competitiveness, but the government insists reforms will create more opportunities for Americans.
The administration is expected to propose legislative changes in the coming months, with officials signaling tighter scrutiny of visa applications and possible caps on certain categories.

'The remover of obstacles' - that is how the elephant-headed Lord Ganesh is referred to in Hindu mythology, and he worked his magic in Mumbai Wednesday, on Ganesh Chaturthi, to bring the estranged Thackeray cousins closer together before civic body election later this year.
This morning Shiv Sena (UBT) boss Uddhav Thackeray welcomed cousin Raj Thackeray, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief, to the family home of Matoshree to worship 'Ganpati bappa'. In the larger context of Maharashtra politics - the landscape of which continues to be dominated by Sena patriarch Bal Thackeray, even decades after his death - Raj Thackeray's visit was crucial.

India remains invested in the Quad despite a change in the equation with the US over the additional tariff of 25 per cent imposed as penalty for buying discounted Russian oil.
"The Quad is indeed an important platform for working on and promoting peace, stability, prosperity and development in the Indo-Pacific region," foreign secretary Vikram Misri told reporters on Tuesday in response to a question on whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi will invite his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba, for the Quad summit scheduled to be held in India this year. The two Prime Ministers are scheduled to meet for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit to be held in Japan later this week.

Donald Trump’s steep 50% tariffs on India took effect on August 27, weeks after he imposed an additional 25% penalty over New Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil and weapons. The move places India—until recently America’s largest trading partner—among the world’s highest tariff-hit nations, threatening its exports and economic growth.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has moved into firefighting mode. He promised a “massive tax bonanza” for citizens and small businesses, including reforms to the goods and services tax (GST) alongside earlier income tax cuts. As India braces for additional 25% US tariffs on key exports, a report by SBI Research warned that the move could shave 40–50 basis points off US GDP while stoking inflationary pressures.
The report noted that the US is already witnessing renewed price rises due to tariffs and a weaker dollar, particularly in import-sensitive sectors such as autos, electronics, and consumer durables. “US tariffs are likely to affect GDP growth by 40–50 bps while raising input cost inflation,” SBI said. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, addressing the Jackson Hole conference, admitted the tariff impact is now “clearly visible.” US wholesale prices jumped nearly 1% in July, the steepest rise in three years. The Producer Price Index climbed 3.3% yearon-year, with tariff-heavy imports like apparel and furniture leading increases. Economists warn that unless tariffs are rolled back, American households will face mounting budget pressures.
The US Department of Homeland Security confirmed that from Wednesday, an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods would apply, citing threats linked to Russia. Combined with earlier duties, this doubles India’s tariff burden, though electronics and pharmaceuticals remain exempt.
Experts believe Modi’s fiscal stimulus will support consumption, lift GDP growth, and contain inflation, particularly vital as tariffs disrupt exportdriven industries such as textiles, garments, shrimp, and diamonds. branding. “We should become self-reliant not out of desperation, but out of pride,” he declared during Independence Day celebrations.
The government’s proposed two-tier GST aims to simplify India’s complex tax system, with analysts estimating reforms worth nearly $20 billion. Together with prior income tax cuts, the changes are expected to boost consumer spending, which accounts for nearly 60% of GDP.

India’s central bank, which has already slashed rates by 1%, may cut further, spurring lending and investment. A planned salary boost for five million government employees will add momentum. Despite global uncertainties, India’s stock markets have responded positively, and the country recently received its first sovereign rating upgrade in 18 years.
Still, the tariff war underscores strained U.S.–India ties, with trade talks suspended amid disputes over Russian energy. At 50%, experts say, the tariffs amount to a de facto sanction on one of America’s closest Indo-Pacific partners.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent remained optimistic about an eventual reconciliation between the US and India as additional punitive tariffs of 25 per cent on Indian goods kicked in on Wednesday.
“India is the world’s largest democracy, US is the world’s largest economy ... I think at the end of the day we will come together,” Bessent said in an interview with Fox Business. “This is a very complicated relationship, President Trump and Prime Minister Modi have a very good relationship at that level, and it’s not just over the Russian oil,” he added. Bessent recalled that India was keen to conclude a trade deal quite early
on in the negotiations, which eventually stalled over India’s unwillingness to open up their core markets to US companies and its continuous purchase of Russian crude oil. “The Indians came in early after Liberation Day to start negotiating on tariffs and we still don’t have a deal. I thought we would have a deal in May or June. I thought India could be one of the earlier deals and they kind of tapped us along in terms of the negotiations and then there is also the aspect of the Russian crude purchases, which they’ve been profiteering on. There’s many levels going on here,” he said

RESERVE BANK OF India Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Monday said the central bank is ready to step in with policy measures to support economic growth and sectors hit by the proposed 50 per cent US tariffs if they start to weigh on India’s economic growth. The tariffs take effect on Wednesday.
“Whatever support is required from us for the growth of the economy and including those of the sectors which are impacted more, if it so happens, we would not be found wanting in our job,” Malhotra said at the FICCI-IBA annual banking conclave.
The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) said Tuesday that textiles and apparel manufacturers in Tirupur, Noida, and Surat have halted production amid worsening cost competitiveness due to US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian exports, taking the cumulative tariffs to 50 per cent — the highest globally.

It was a single wrong U-turn that changed many lives forever. On Florida’s Turnpike, three unsuspecting travelers were killed when their car collided with a tractor-trailer driven by 28-year-old Harjinder Singh. The immigrant from India, who entered the United States in 2018 without legal documentation, had been working to carve out a place for himself in the trucking industry. Instead, he now finds himself at the center of a tragedy with repercussions far beyond the accident site. But the unfortunate case, does not end with personal losses for the families of the deceased and legal trouble and harsh punishment for Singh. But the case has engulfed people in India and in the U.S. especially immigrants who have been living and working in the U.S.
The Charges Levied
Harjinder Singh is facing charges of vehicular homicide as his wrong turn led to an accident with another vehicle. Singh could be looking at a 45 year-long jail term. As of now, he faces three state counts of vehicular homicide and immigration violations. He has been denied bond on all charges. He is being held in the St. Lucie County Jail.
A Tale of Land mortgage and Chasing the American Dream
While for an average American, the story of Singh coming to the United States after mortgaging his family property – a piece of land may come as a surprise but for thousands of Indians from smaller villages in Punjab this has been the start of an American Dream. While many come to the U.S. and with their hard work and grit build a better life for others hardships and struggles await in a land they longed to come. In Harjinder’s case what made matters worse was the fact that he entered the U.S. illegally. This led to the spokesperson for Homeland Security calling the action of issuing a commercial license to someone in the country illegally asinine.
Drivers’ Family back Home & the Crash Victims
Activist and former candidate for NY City Council Japneet Singh talking about the incident and its repercussions told Hi India, “Everything is wrong in this moment. It’s wrong that this young brother thought its’ okay to make a illegal U-turn when you are driving a 18-wheeler. It’s wrong that the car that was driving did not slow down, it’s wrong that we lost three innocent lives. It’s wrong that we have politicians who are trying to use this incident to score political points.” It’s wrong that we have racists and bigots trying to paint all immigrants as bad people. But what is the wrong part also is that Harjinder Singh is made out to be a monster. Nobody is looking at this with compassion – no body is looking at him as a young, only bread winner of his family. In this moment we must call for fair and just sentencing and this moment must not become a political feeder.”
Harjinder Singh has an older brother – Tejinder Singh and his mom back in Punjab; his father passed away years ago. As for the victims in the minivan that collided with the truck and lost their lives have been identified as Herby Dufresne (30) Rodrigue Dor (54) Faniloa Joseph (37) Visa Freeze, Tougher Time for Immigrants
The case has spilled into the political arena and has led to policy revisions. Former President Donald Trump’s recent call to freeze certain work visas
sarpanch everyone is pleading that leniency be shown to the young driver. His relative told Indian media that Harjinder is all of 28 and if he were to get a 45-year-long jail sentence his future would be doomed. The villagers are also appealing to Sikh civil rights bodies across the globe to come forward and help Harjinder Singh. His acquaintances maintain that Harjinder had no intention to be rash but it was a terrible mistake – but his wellwishers urge the mistake should not lead to a punishment where he no longer can have any future.
A Legal and Immigration Flashpoint
Singh faces serious charges, and prosecutors are expected to scrutinize not just the circumstances of the crash but also his immigration status and path to obtaining a commercial driver’s license. His story is now a case study in the intersection of road safety, licensing oversight, and America’s complex immigration system.
Trucking and the Immigrant Backbone
The tragedy has also reignited discussion about the trucking industry itself — an industry that, for decades, has relied heavily on immigrant labor. Indian and Sikh American drivers in particular make up a visible and growing segment of America’s trucking workforce. Many entered the sector in the 1980s and have since become integral to keeping supply chains moving. But Singh’s case raises uncomfortable questions: How are commercial drivers vetted? Are regulatory systems
for foreign truckers in the wake of the accident has thrust Singh’s case into the national spotlight. Supporters of tougher immigration controls see it as proof of systemic failures, while critics argue the move unfairly scapegoats immigrant drivers who, statistics show, are critical to sustaining the American economy.
Anxiety at Rataul Village in Punjab’s Tarn Taran District
Around 10 Kms from Amritsar-Tarn Taran Road in Punjab, Rataul is a small village. It’s a farming village where most families know each other. Soon as the news of Harjinder Singh’s ill-fated accident reached the village he grew up in, a sense of fear gripped the village. Everyone from his friends, neighbors to village elderly as well as the village
keeping pace with the industry’s demands?
A petition for Singh
A petition has been launched asking for Fair Sentencing for Harjinder Singh. More than 3,000000 people have already signed the petition that urges Governor Ron De Santis to reduce the sentence stressing that the tragedy was an accident and not a deliberate act.
While many are seeing the human side of the story and would want to see Harjinder get a new chance, some others on social media point out that a petition may not help and strict checks must be placed on any illegal entries or attempts to obtain commercial driver licenses unless the person is qualified for the same.

Utah Senator Mike Lee has asked if it’s “time to pause H-1B visas” after online rumors claimed Walmart was firing American tech workers and taking bribes to hire Indians on H-1Bs. The claims have not been verified. Walmart clarified that it did terminate a vendor and a few employees after an internal investigation, but said the action “had nothing to do with H-1B visas.” The controversy comes just days after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene also demanded a stop to H-1B visas for Indians, saying they were “replacing American jobs.”
Rumors of a “Walmart H-1B scandal” began on the workplace app Blind, where anonymous posts alleged that a company vice president accepted huge kickbacks from staffing agencies to hire Indian H-1B workers, leading to the termination of about 1,200 contractors. The claims quickly spread across social media and coincided with Walmart’s announcement earlier this year that it was laying off around 1,500 employees in its U.S. tech and e-commerce divisions.

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration has issued a notice imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, effective 12:01 am EST on August 27, 2025.
The Department of Homeland Security cited “threats to the United States by the Government of the Russian Federation” as the reason for targeting India, amid its ongoing purchase of Russian crude oil.
Relations between New Delhi and Washington have soured after US tariffs on Indian goods were doubled to 50%, including the new 25% punitive duty. The tariffs apply to products entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouses on or after the specified time. Ahead of the tariff’s implementation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public rally in Ahmedabad’s Nikol area, emphasizing India’s economic resilience. “No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it,” he said, assuring protection for small entrepreneurs, farmers, and livestock rearers. In a veiled reference to the US tariffs, PM Modi criticized global economic self-interest, saying, “Today in this world, everyone looks out for themselves. We are witnessing this.” He concluded, “From the soil of Ahmedabad, I promise that the interests of small entrepreneurs, shopkeepers, farmers, and livestock rearers are our utmost priority.”
With this, India now also has a three-frigate squadron demonstrating the country's industrialtechnological capability and regional power balance by indigenous capability.
The Himgiri and Udaygiri are largely homegrown - with over 75 per cent indigenous content - and represent a big boost to the government's 'aatmanirbharta', or self-reliance, push in defence manufacturing and capabilities.
This is the first time two major warships from two prestigious shipyards are being commissioned at the same time; Himgiri was built Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata and Udagiri by Mumbai's Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders. Sources told NDTV this dual commissioning shows India's growing shipbuilding prowess and synergy between premier defence shipyards.

Washington: US President Donald Trump has opened the doors of American universities to six lakh Chinese students, even as his administration continues its crackdown on International students. The American leader stressed that Washington and Beijing shared a "very important relationship", signalling a dramatic shift from his administration's "America first" policy. Previously, the Trump administration has vowed to "aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields."
Washington: President Donald Trump on Friday tapped close political aide Sergio Gor as US ambassador to India, sending one of his feared enforcers at a delicate time in ties with New Delhi. Indian American Teen Stabbed in Texas outside his home
A quiet night turned traumatic for an Indian American family in Frisco, Texas when their teenage son was stabbed during a routine dog walk.
Fifteen-year-old Ankur Dhar was just a few houses away from his home in the Grayhawk neighborhood when a stranger approached him around 8:45 p.m. The man said to Ankur that he looked familiar and mentioned he attended the same high school. Moments later, without warning, the teen was stabbed with what is believed to be a pocketknife. The entire encounter was caught on a neighbor’s Ring camera. Despite the shock and pain, Ankur managed to run back home with his dog. His father, Adesh Dhar, recalled the terrifying sight: “I saw blood gushing out of his arm. He said someone stabbed him, and I was numb. Thankfully, it happened just two houses away. If it was farther, it could have been disastrous.”
Ankur was rushed to the hospital, where he received 19 stitches.
Rice is a staple food for millions of people around the world. From steaming bowls of plain rice to biryani and fried rice, it is part of daily meals in many homes. But not all rice is the same. The two most common types of white rice and brown rice are processed differently, taste differently, and have different effects on health. Let's look at what makes them different and which one is healthier.
What's The Main Difference?
The biggest difference between brown rice and white rice is how much of the grain's natural parts are kept during milling.
Brown rice keeps the bran and germ, which are rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals. White rice has these removed, leaving mostly the starchy part called the endosperm. Because of this, brown rice looks darker and has a nutty taste and chewy texture. White rice looks polished, cooks faster and tastes softer.
Nutrition Face-Off: Brown Rice Vs White Rice
Brown rice has more fibre, vitamins like B1 and B3, and minerals like magnesium and iron. One cup of cooked brown rice gives about 3.5

Certain common foods and drinks can quietly increase cancer risk. Sugary beverages like sodas and flavored drinks promote inflammation and have been linked to cancers such as breast, colon, and pancreatic. Healthier options include coconut water or herbal teas. Deep-fried foods, especially when cooked in reused oil, produce harmful compounds like acrylamide, which can trigger oxidative stress and inflammation.
Baking or air-frying is a safer alternative. Similarly, charred or overcooked meat from high-temperature grilling forms compounds that can damage DNA. Opting for steaming, baking, or slow cooking, and marinating meat with herbs, can reduce risks.
Even moderate alcohol consumption can elevate hormone levels and interfere with DNA repair, raising the chance of hormone-related cancers. Non-alcoholic fermented drinks like beetroot kanji or kombucha are safer substitutes. Ultra-processed foods—instant noodles, packaged snacks, and ready meals—fuel chronic inflammation and lack natural nutrients, increasing cancer risk. Replacing them with home-cooked dishes like vegetable khichdi or oats upma provides essential nutrients while keeping inflammation under control.

grams of fibre, while white rice gives only about 0.6 grams.
White rice, after milling and polishing, loses many of these nutrients. Some brands add vitamins back (called "enriched white rice"), but it still has less fibre compared to brown rice. Which Is Better For Blood Sugar?
Brown rice is better for controlling
blood sugar. It has a lower glycaemic index (GI), which means it raises blood sugar more slowly. This can help people with diabetes or those trying to manage their weight. White rice has a higher GI, which can cause quicker spikes in blood sugar. Eating it often, especially in large amounts, can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Taste, Cooking And Digestion
White rice is softer, cooks faster and is easier to digest, which is why it is often chosen for children, older adults or people with stomach troubles. Brown rice takes longer to cook and has a firmer bite. Some people prefer its earthy taste, while others may find it too heavy.
If you're new to brown rice, you can mix it with white rice to slowly get used to the texture and flavour.
So, Which Rice Should You Eat?
Both can be part of a healthy diet, but brown rice generally wins for its higher fibre and better effect on blood sugar.
If you love white rice, you don't have to stop eating it, just watch your portions and balance it with vegetables and proteins.

During his Moscow trip, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar responded to American officials' criticism of India's trade ties with Russia, and said the Indian government is "perplexed" by the US threats, as Washington itself had asked New Delhi to help stabilise global energy markets by buying Russian oil.

Indian-origin physician Dr. Krishnaswami Sriram, of Lake Forest, Illinois, has been sentenced to 34 months in prison for evading millions in taxes and defrauding Medicare, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Court filings show that between 2011 and 2017, Sriram concealed assets to avoid paying about $1.6 million in back taxes, penalties, and interest. He transferred two rental properties into his children’s names without their knowledge while continuing to collect income from them, and secretly moved nearly $700,000 to bank accounts in India.
He also withheld details of U.S. and overseas investments when submitting financial documents to the IRS.

Prosecutors further revealed that from 2012 to 2022, the Indian American doctor submitted false Medicare claims, billing for home visits that never occurred including for patients who had already died or were hospitalized. His fraudulent billing resulted in almost $137,000 in false reimbursements.
Along with his prison term, Sriram was ordered to pay $1.7 million in restitution and serve three years of supervised release.
Though the US imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on India for its energy ties with Russia, it has not initiated similar actions against China, the largest buyer of Russian crude oil.
Washington: Calling India the "Maharaja" of tariffs, US President Donald Trump's trade adviser, Peter Navarro, accused New Delhi of running a "profiteering scheme" by continuing to import Russian oil, and said he expects punitive tariffs of 50 per cent on Indian imports to take effect as planned next week.
"I see that taking place," Navarro told reporters outside the White House when asked about the 25 per cent punitive tariffs on India that are set to kick in on August 27.
"Prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, India virtually bought no Russian oil...It was like almost one per cent of their need. The percentage has now gone up to 35 per cent...They don't need the oil. It's a refining profit-sharing scheme. It's a laundromat for the Kremlin. That's the reality of that," Navarro said.
The fresh salvo from the trade hawk comes after India has signalled it'll keep buying Russian oil. Stung by the steep 50 per cent levy, the Indian government has reiterated its long-standing friendship with Russia and moved to ease tensions with regional rival China in recent days.

Bollywood star Shraddha Kapoor recently found herself amid an unexpected digital hiccup, as her verified LinkedIn account was suddenly blocked, prompting the actress to publicly request assistance. Despite having a premium, verified profile, Kapoor discovered that her account had been flagged as “fake,” rendering it invisible to others and hampering her ability to share professional updates.
Taking to Instagram on the night of Saturday, August 23, Kapoor addressed the issue directly. In her Instagram Story, she wrote, “Dear LinkedIn @linkedin_in, I’m unable to access my own account because LinkedIn believes it’s fake. Can someone assist me? The account is set up, premium, and verified, yet no one can see it. I want to begin sharing my entrepreneurial journey, but getting the account operational has turned into a journey itself.”
The incident appears to be the result of a misunderstanding within LinkedIn’s verification or moderation system. Reports indicate that her account, though verified and set up to share her entrepreneurial ventures, was mistakenly flagged and subsequently blocked.
Has Salman Khan brought down his exorbitant fee? At least for Bigg Boss, the show he has been hosting for the last fifteen years?
There are reports that the Khan has lowered his price from Rs 250 crores to Rs. 150 crores.
However, when this writer touched base with a source very close to the development, the truth appeared to be somewhat different. “Where do they get these figures from? The price cut which the Bigg Boss producers Endemol requested for reasons of falling ratings was for around Rs 50 crores. Salman obliged them. Where is the question of a Rs 100 crore cut being forced on him (Salman) when, in fact, he is most reluctant to host Bigg Boss anymore? For some years now, Salman has been asking to be relieved from his hosting duties on Bigg Boss. Unfortunately, Bigg Boss without Salman is as inconceivable as KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati) without Mr (Amitabh) Bachchan,” said the source. But here is the thing: Salman Khan made it clear that he won’t host Bigg Boss from the next season onwards. Karan Johar is likely to take over.

Actress Daisy Shah, who has worked in both Bollywood and Sandalwood, recently spoke candidly about what she described as the Kannada film industry's unusual fixation on female actors’ navels. In an interview with Hauterrfly, Shah criticized the lack of depth in direction for women, noting that male actors often received more nuanced guidance.
She recalled, “When I was doing a Kannada film, during my off days I watched TV, and in all the Kannada songs I saw… there was a particular actor, and in all his songs, either a fruit salad or a vegetable salad was being made on the heroine’s navel with close-up shots. Sometimes ice or water was being poured on the navel too.”
Shah contrasted the superficial treatment of female roles with the richer direction afforded to male counterparts, suggesting the disparity stemmed partly from her
Bollywood actor Tina Ahuja has finally responded to the persistent rumours surrounding her parents, Govinda and Sunita Ahuja, and their alleged divorce. In an interview with Hindustan Times, Tina dismissed the reports outright, calling them baseless and untrue. “It’s all rumours. I don’t pay attention to these rumours,” Tina said firmly. She further added, “I feel blessed to have a beautiful family, and I’m truly grateful for all the love, concern and support we’ve been receiving from the media, fans, and loved ones.” The clarification comes after weeks of speculation that began when Sunita Ahuja shared an emotional vlog online. The video sparked chatter about potential trouble in the couple’s marriage. In a recent press conference, Faissal leveled shocking allegations against his mother, siblings, and Aamir, detailing years of personal conflict and isolation. Speaking to the media, Faissal disclosed that his family pressured him into marrying his maternal aunt. He said, “My family was pressuring me to marry my aunt, my mother’s first cousin. I never wanted that, but from that time, they started putting pressure on me to get married. I was focused on my work and not interested at all. Because of this, I had many arguments with my family. So I started living away from them, because whenever I met them, there would be fights about this, and I really don’t like fighting. My family got angry, and my mother got angry, because I refused to marry my aunt.” He went on to add, “When I got upset with my family, I wrote a letter. I wrote about every family member’s story. Nikkhat, my elder sister, got married three times. Aamir was married to Reena Dutta. He was having an affair with Jessica Hines, and they even have an illegitimate child out of wedlock. At that time, he was living in with Kiran. I wrote all this in the letter, so they became angry with me. Then everyone turned against me and said, ‘Declare him mad.’”

Days before US President Donald Trump's punitive 50 per cent tariffs take effect on Indian exports, India's embassy in Washington has reportedly hired a second lobbying firm with close ties to the Trump administration. India will continue to buy oil from wherever it "gets the best deal" in order to protect the interests of its 1.4 billion people, the country's ambassador to Russia has said. Vinay Kumar's statement comes days before US President Donald Trump's 50% tariffs on India, including a 25% penalty for buying Russian oil and weapons, are set to kick in.
On Sunday, US Vice-President JD Vance said that Trump had announced secondary tariffs on India to apply "aggressive economic leverage" on Russia and force it to stop the war in Ukraine.
An Indianorigin man has demanded a public apology from law enforcement in Georgia after spending 47 days in jail on what turned out to be false kidnapping charges. Mahendra Patel, 62, was arrested in March after a woman at a Walmart accused him of trying to grab her two-year-old son from a mobility scooter. But surveillance footage later revealed Patel had only tried to stop the child from falling. The charges were dropped earlier this month.
The Delhi High Court on Monday set aside an order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) directing disclosure of information on the bachelor's degree of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Justice Sachin Datta, who reserved the judgement on February 27, passed the verdict on Delhi University's plea challenging the CIC order.
Following an RTI application by one Neeraj, the CIC on December 21, 2016, allowed inspection of records of all students who cleared the BA exam in 1978 -- the year Prime Minister Modi also passed it.
The high court stayed the CIC order on January 23, 2017.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared for DU, argued the order of the CIC deserved to be set aside.
Mehta, however, said the varsity had no objection to show its record to the court.

Islamabad have issued warnings based on the information provided by India, a Pakistani media report said.
Islamabad: Amid heightened diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan, New Delhi reportedly extended a goodwill gesture on Sunday and alerted Islamabad about the flood situation in the Tawi River. The information was forwarded via the Indian High
Commission in Islamabad, as the usual Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) channel remains in abeyance after the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistani media reported, citing official sources. There has been no official confirmation regarding the development by either India or Pakistan, but if the claims are true, it would mark the first time India used its diplomatic mission to convey such information. Ideally, such inputs are shared through the Indus Water Commissioners, under the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty, which has been in abeyance after a terror attack in Pahalgam, where terrorists targeted tourists, killing 25 Indian nationals and one Nepalese citizen, and leaving several others injured.
Justice Sachin Datta, who reserved the judgement on February 27, passed the verdict on Delhi University's plea challenging the CIC order
of art," he said.
DU challenged the CIC order on the ground that it held the information of students in a fiduciary capacity and "mere curiosity" in the absence of public interest did not entitle anyone to seek private information under the RTI law. Earlier, the counsel for the RTI applicants defended the CIC's order on the ground that Right to Information (RTI) Act provided for disclosure of the prime minister's educational information in greater public good.

Moscow: Russian companies, particularly in machinery and electronics, are increasingly hiring Indian nationals, said Vinay Kumar, India’s ambassador to Russia. Speaking to TASS, he highlighted that the surge in Indian workers is putting pressure on consular services, which handle passport renewals, childbirth registrations, and other documentation The trend comes as Western nations, including the US, UK, and Canada, tighten immigration rules. "There is a manpower requirement in Russia, and India has skilled manpower," Kumar noted, adding that recruitment is taking place within the framework of
Russian laws and quotas. While most Indian workers are currently employed in construction and textiles, demand in machinery and electronics is growing rapidly.
The Indian community in Russia is expanding, with about 14,000 members,
including students, professionals, and laborers. Around 4,500 Indian students are enrolled in Russian medical and technical institutions, with 90% pursuing medical studies across 20 universities. The remainder are engaged in engineering, aeronautical design, computer science, management, agriculture, and related fields. Additionally, roughly 1,500 Afghan nationals of Indian origin reside in Russia. Kumar emphasized that relations with Russia remain a key pillar of India’s foreign policy, describing Moscow as a long-standing and reliable partner. The increasing presence of Indians in Russia reflects both the demand for skilled labor and the attraction of opportunities amid stricter Western immigration policies.
Per the Indian Embassy's data, the size of the Indian Community in Russia is estimated at 14,000. In addition, there are about 1,500 Afghan nationals of Indian origin in Russia.
MIAMI, FL – A petition urging leniency for Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old truck driver accused of causing a crash that killed three people in Florida, has gathered more than 2.5 million signatures on Change.org as of August 24.
The petition, addressed to Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Board of Executive Clemency, requests a review of Singh’s case. It argues that the charges do not accurately reflect the circumstances of the accident and urges that any sentence allow parole eligibility and consider alternatives such as counseling or community service. According to authorities, Singh was driving a tractor-trailer on the Florida Turnpike in Fort Pierce on August 12 when he attempted a U-turn in
an unauthorized area. The truck jackknifed and collided with a minivan, killing three passengers. Singh and his brother, Harneet Singh, fled the state the following day. He was arrested in Stockton, California, on August 16 and extradited to Florida.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A grocery chain has agreed to pay $75,000 and overhaul its procedures after investigators found it was mislabeling beef and poultry freshness dates and selling spoiled products, Ocean County officials said Monday.
The Ocean County Department of Consumer Affairs announced a consent agreement with Stop & Shop supermarkets requiring the chain to pay fines and adopt stricter safeguards across its 46 New Jersey stores. The probe began after complaints about spoiled meat at the Toms River location and expanded to all five Ocean County stores, where investigators uncovered “systemic mislabeling practices.”
Investigators found beef and poultry stamped with dates reflecting when items were placed on display, not when they were packaged, misleading consumers about freshness. In some cases, expiration dates exceeded wholesaler recommendations. One example cited a wholesale box delivered
in February but not opened until March, yet labeled as if freshly packaged.
Officials said Stop & Shop had moved away from in-store butchers, relying on prepackaged products from off-site wholesalers. Corporate counsel and senior management cooperated with the investigation but initially described the matter as “mislabeling.”
The consent agreement, negotiated by county attorney Laura Comer and Consumer Affairs Director Ronald
Heinzman, requires immediate corrective action. The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office and Division of Consumer Affairs were also briefed.
“This was a serious breach of consumer trust,” Heinzman said. “It posed a direct public health and safety issue.”
The investigation was led by Consumer Protection Investigators Andrew Chencharik and Anthony Fontana, with support from the county Health Department.

The case has drawn widespread attention, particularly among members of the Punjabi community in India and abroad, who have expressed strong support for Singh. The petition was launched by a group identifying itself as “Collective Punjabi Youth.”
In the aftermath of the crash, U.S. officials also announced new restrictions on foreign commercial truck drivers. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the suspension of visas was aimed at protecting American workers and ensuring public safety.

WASHINGTON, DC- For the first time in decades, more immigrants are leaving the United States than arriving, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of census data. Between January and June, the foreign-born population declined by nearly 1.5 million, dropping from 53.3 million to 51.9 million.
The Trump administration has embraced the trend, calling it evidence that pressure on government services and job markets is easing. Supporters argue the crackdown has not gone far enough. Yet economists warn that prolonged negative net migration could weaken the economy, strain industries dependent on immigrant labor, and worsen demographic challenges as baby boomers retire.
President Trump campaigned on mass deportations and has since tightened asylum access, raised visa barriers, and expanded detention and deportation
efforts. These policies have pushed some immigrants to leave voluntarily. Lillian Divina Leite, a Brazilian housekeeper in North Carolina, used the government’s new self-deportation app to return home, saying she feared being treated “like a hardened criminal.”
While advocates of reduced immigration hail the decline as a relief for American workers, experts caution that both legal and unauthorized immigration are vital. Farms, restaurants, and assistedliving facilities already report worker shortages, and economists stress that immigrants immediately bolster the

labor force, unlike new births that take decades to reach working age.
The United States last saw negative net migration during the Great Depression. Today’s drop comes despite a need to offset low birthrates and an aging population. Critics argue that restrictive policies are undermining the country’s competitiveness for global talent, risking long-term damage to science and technology leadership.
Still, the administration celebrates the reversal. “Promises made. Promises kept,” Mr. Trump declared on Truth Social. Whether the decline proves temporary or lasting will depend on how aggressively enforcement continues in the years ahead.

Cultural & Spiritual Engagements
On Janmashtami, AAPI leaders visited Akshardham for a private guided spiritual tour led by Pujya Yogananddas Swami and Pujya Nilkanthsevadas Swami, reinforcing the values of purpose, service, and devotion.
Other highlights included:
• Aug. 14 – “Tricolor Triumph Over Manhattan” as the Empire State Building lit up in India’s national colors.
• Aug. 17 – FIA Dinner at Cipriani Wall Street, bringing the celebrations to an elegant close.
Reflections
Dr. Krishan Kumar noted, “Through such events, AAPI continues to advocate for health policies and highlight the physician’s leadership role in teambased care.”
Dr. Seema Arora added, “This is part of AAPI’s ongoing efforts to be a mainstream organization, addressing healthcare delivery and promoting wellbeing for all.”
In closing, Dr. Chakrabarty thanked FIA, the Indian Consulate, and all participants: “This was an unforgettable celebration of India’s independence and a proud moment for AAPI, representing 120,000 Indian American physicians.”
Organized by FIA-NY/NJ/CT, the India Day Parade showcased the contributions of the 4 million-strong Indian American community and honored Mother India in the heart of New York City.
WASHINGTON, D.C.- Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has revoked the security clearances of at least 37 current and former national security officials, citing “politicization or weaponization of intelligence to advance personal, partisan, or non-objective agendas,” according to a memo obtained by CNN.
Those affected reportedly include officials involved in the 2017 intelligence assessment on Russian interference in the 2016 election, as well as members of former President Joe Biden’s National Security Council. Most are not publicly known, CNN said.
The action—first reported by the New York Post and later confirmed by Gabbard in a post on X—marks the latest escalation in efforts to challenge the 2017 assessment that Russia sought to help Donald Trump win the 2016 election. “Being entrusted with a security clearance is a privilege, not a right,” Gabbard wrote

BOSTON, MA – An Indian national unlawfully residing in New York was sentenced in federal court in Boston for staging armed robberies to support a visa fraud scheme.
Rambhai Patel, 38, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Myong J. Joun to 20 months and eight days in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, and ordered to forfeit $850,000. He faces deportation after completing his sentence. Patel pleaded guilty in May 2025 to one count of conspiracy to commit visa fraud. He was indicted in December 2023 along with co-conspirator Balwinder Singh.

WASHINGTON, DC - Up to 1,700 National Guard members are set to mobilize across 19 states in the coming weeks to support the Department of Homeland Security in President Trump’s nationwide crackdown on illegal immigration and crime, Pentagon officials confirmed.
As per report, activations planned in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming, with deployments running from late August through midNovember. Texas is expected to host the largest presence.
The Guard’s role will focus on administrative and logistical support to ICE, including case management, transportation, clerical functions, and facility operations such as data collection, fingerprinting, DNA swabbing, and photographing detainees. Officials emphasized that Guard members will
not make arrests or conduct direct law enforcement. Under Title 32 authority, they remain under state governor control, not federal military command, ensuring compliance with the Posse Comitatus Act.
Virginia confirmed about 60 soldiers and airmen will begin training August 25 for duties in early September.
“VNG personnel will not conduct law enforcement functions,” a spokesperson said, noting they will report to ICE leadership at duty stations while under the governor’s authority. Vermont has declined participation.
President Trump recently indicated his administration may broaden operations beyond Washington, D.C., saying, “I think Chicago will be our next. And then we’ll help with New York.” Defense officials stressed further missions are still under planning with state governors. The mobilization follows nearly 2,000 Guard members already deployed in Washington, D.C., where they’ve been stationed at checkpoints, monuments, and traffic posts under direct presidential authority.

During the staged incidents, the “robber” threatened clerks with an apparent firearm, stole cash, and fled. Clerks waited several minutes before calling police. Participants paid Patel
to be “victims.” One paid $20,000 for the opportunity. Patel also paid store owners to use their premises. He earned about $850,000, which must be forfeited. At least two co-conspirators submitted U Visa applications based on these staged crimes. Singh pleaded guilty in May 2025 and is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 24, 2025. The case was announced by U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley and FBI Special Agent in Charge Ted E. Docks. Investigative support came from U.S. Attorney’s Offices in New York and Washington, FBI field offices in New York and Seattle, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Massachusetts State Police, several district attorneys, and local police departments across Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Elianna J. Nuzum and Jessica L. Soto prosecuted the case.
WASHINGTON, D.C.– Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents raided the Bethesda, Maryland home of former National Security Advisor John Bolton on August 22, in a high-profile security investigation tied to classified documents. The move coincided with Bolton’s sharp criticism of Washington’s policy on tariffs imposed on India for importing Russian oil.
According to the New York Post, FBI agents arrived at 7 a.m. in an operation overseen by FBI Director Kash Patel, who posted cryptically on X: “NO ONE is above the law…FBI agents on mission.” The investigation reportedly originated years earlier, linked to the handling of sensitive material.
At 7:32 a.m., as agents searched his residence, Bolton posted on X, criticizing the Trump administration’s handling of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He wrote that Moscow’s demands for Ukrainian territory would never be met by President Zelensky and dismissed ongoing peace talks as a political move by Trump to secure a Nobel Peace Prize, predicting “no progress.” Bolton has previously faced controversy for his 2020 memoir, The Room Where It Happened. The Trump administration sought to block its release, claiming it contained classified information and violated a nondisclosure agreement. Despite legal efforts, the book was published, and Bolton has since remained a frequent critic of Trump’s national security policies. In January, after beginning his second term, Trump revoked the security clearances of 50 former intelligence officials, including Bolton. The raid marks the latest escalation in long-standing tensions between Bolton and the Trump camp.
NAPERVILLE, IL- In the heart of Naperville, where diversity and devotion thrive, ISKCON Naperville is preparing to host one of the most spiritually uplifting festivals of the year—Sri Krishna Janmashtami. More than a religious observance, this annual celebration is a cultural and spiritual carnival that unites people of all backgrounds in honoring the birth of Lord Krishna.
The two-day festival opens with sights, sounds, and scents that stir the soul— ornate temple decorations, fresh flowers, devotional music, and the joyous energy of thousands of devotees. Families in vibrant attire, children dressed as Krishna and Radha, and volunteers guiding visitors all add to the festive spirit. The day begins with Archana and Tulsi offerings, accompanied by chants of the Hare Krishna mantra reverberating throughout the temple. As evening approaches, anticipation builds for the Maha Abhishek, the sacred bathing of deities with milk, honey, ghee, and fragrant flowers. Devotees sing kirtans as the atmosphere swells with devotion. At midnight, the temple resounds with cymbals, conches, and chants during the Maha Arati, marking
Krishna’s divine appearance—a moment of profound spiritual bliss.
Beyond rituals, Janmashtami at ISKCON Naperville shines as a cultural festival. Children participate in costume parades and the thrilling Matka Breaking ceremony, recreating Krishna’s playful butter-stealing pastime. The temple grounds also transform into a culinary haven, with volunteers offering vegetarian and vegan delicacies from around the world. Sharing prasadam—sanctified food—is for many the highlight of the celebration, symbolizing love and unity. Community voices reflect the festival’s essence. Longtime devotee Niran Tarap Prabhu shared:
“Janmashtami is more than a festival—it is a spiritual journey. Each year I relive the same joy, the same miracle.” Another devotee, Utashloka Das, described the temple as “a place where you feel the same energy as Vrindavan.” For many, including young participants, the joy is simple yet profound: singing, dancing, eating together, and feeling Krishna’s presence.
What began with just 25 families has now grown to welcome 10,000–20,000 people each year. The festival also honors the appearance day of ISKCON’s founder, Srila Prabhupada, with hundreds of offerings and prayers. Behind the grandeur are tireless volunteers who dedicate their time to prasadam preparation, crowd organization, and temple service.
Ultimately, ISKCON Naperville’s Janmashtami is more than celebration—it is a movement of devotion, joy, and community. It bridges tradition and modernity, East and West, ritual and culture. Above all, it reminds us of Krishna’s eternal message—love, compassion, and unity. As the midnight chants fade, one truth endures: Krishna lives in the hearts of all who gather here.

NEW ORLEANS, LA - Special Agent
in Charge Jonathan Tapp of the FBI New Orleans Field Office credits the commitment of the Department of Justice’s Violent Crime and Racketeering Section (VCRS) for providing additional resources to Louisiana, calling it major boost to the ongoing effort to fight violent crime here.
In the spring of this year, Governor Jeff Landry met with the FBI and other law enforcement partners to address violence that was shattering neighborhoods in Baton Rouge and around the state. The FBI led an 11-agency collaborative effort between local, state, and federal law enforcement as well as state and federal prosecutors this summer. Operation Summer Heat was such a success, it will be a model for other proactive law enforcement initiatives across the state.
“The Department of Justice believed so much in our potential success; its leaders committed extra trial attorneys to come to Louisiana to prosecute the violent criminals we apprehend. And this assistance is crucial to our longterm success. The VCRS specializes in the criminal prosecution of serious gang-related cases. The VCRS brings experience and a proven track record of disrupting and dismantling criminal organizations. And that commitment isn’t just for a day, a week, or a year. It’s a long-term commitment that will guarantee the worst of the worst potentially face a long stint in federal prison once we make the cases,” said
In the spring of this year, Governor Jeff Landry met with the FBI and other law enforcement partners to address violence that was shattering neighborhoods in Baton Rouge and around the state.
Tapp. Operation Summer Heat was part of a Bureau-wide initiative to meet one of the FBI’s primary missions: crush violent crime. The results in Baton Rouge were significant. In all, more than 30 law enforcement operations, targeting multiple locations, and multiple gang members were carried out in just over a few months’ time. The focus of law enforcement attention were four gangs: “Vultures”, “Bleedas”,
“60 Gang”, and “BBG.” Members of these gangs are believed responsible for murders, robberies, and drug trafficking across the city and parish. Enforcement actions focused on four neighborhoods where the gangs have been most active and where violent crime is the highest. The collective effort ended with more than one-hundred arrests, the seizure of more than one-hundred firearms, dozens of machine gun conversion devices, fentanyl and other dangerous drugs, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash. The majority of people arrested face multiple charges in state and federal court. “We brought in Agents and intelligence personnel from our Violent Crime Rapid Deployment Team, from offices around the country, to augment our people permanently assigned to Baton Rouge,” said Tapp. “This is just the beginning of our intensified focus on violent crime and gangs. We will continue that effort in Baton Rouge and across Louisiana.”
CHICAGO, IL - In January, immigration enforcement operations in Chicago rattled families in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood. Maria, a parent-mentor at Lloyd Elementary and an undocumented mother of three U.S.-born children, recalls students voicing fears that they or relatives might be detained on their way to school. Some families even considered leaving the community.
“I had a lot of fear,” she said.
This week, Maria joined immigrant rights advocates to celebrate Gov. JB Pritzker’s signing of the Safe Schools for All Act. The new law prohibits Illinois public schools from denying access to education based on a student’s or parent’s immigration status. It also bars schools from disclosing such information and requires procedures for reviewing law enforcement requests to enter campuses.
“Now many families across the state can feel safer in their children’s public school,” Maria said.
The legislation, led by State Rep. Lilian Jimenez and State Sen. Karina Villa, strengthens protections first affirmed in the 1982 Supreme Court ruling Plyler v. Doe. Advocates say the state action is crucial as federal protections feel less certain under the current administration.
“This ensures schools remain sanctuaries where children can learn without fear,” Jimenez said.
Sai Pariwar President Shiv Kolli presented updates on the temple construction project, highlighting the 15-year history of the current leased temple and its limitations.

The three-hour program delighted audiences with a wide range of melodies—from golden classics and soulful bhajans to contemporary favorites. The program opened with Guruji’s heartfelt Ganesh prayer and a melodious Sai Bhajan, setting the tone for an evening of devotion, nostalgia, and joy. Guests also enjoyed delicious food and the warmth of community fellowship.
Special guest Upendra Chivukula, New Jersey’s first Indian American State Assemblyman and current Commissioner of Public Utilities, urged everyone to donate generously and be part of this historic effort to build a new temple “in our backyard” to serve the
region’s growing Indian American community.
Throughout the evening, the spirit of Seva (selfless service), Shraddha (faith), and Saburi (patience) shone brightly. Community leaders and devotees expressed strong support for Sai Pariwar’s vision of creating a modern, fully accessible temple and cultural center that will serve as a spiritual home for generations to come. Located on Route 130 in North Brunswick, the planned temple will feature sanctums for multiple deities, expanded facilities, modern infrastructure, and ample parking—ensuring a welcoming space for worship, cultural enrichment, and community service.
The gala also advanced Sai Pariwar’s $5 million capital campaign to fund construction. Guests contributed generously through pledges and sponsorship opportunities, underscoring the community’s commitment to building a lasting spiritual and cultural landmark in Central Jersey.
Sai Pariwar President Shiv Kolli presented updates on the temple construction project, highlighting the 15-year history of the current leased temple and its limitations. Guruji Surendra Katthula expressed deep
LOS ANGELES, CA — Masked federal agents in tactical gear have been targeting Home Depot parking lots across Southern California, forcing undocumented day laborers to weigh the need for work against the risk of arrest or deportation.
On Friday, operations in North Hollywood and Alhambra left workers handcuffed as organizers demanded warrants. The raids are part of the Trump administration’s crackdown, which has intensified fear among day laborers already struggling with a weak economy, wildfire recovery, and rising construction costs from tariffs.
Each morning, workers gather at store lots hoping for daily wages or longer projects. But repeated arrests have left many traumatized, unable to sleep after witnessing friends detained.
“You can’t stay home. You need money for kids, bills, rent, food,” said Arturo, a Los Angeles laborer of 25 years, who fears ICE agents yet feels he has no choice but to keep working.
Tensions escalated after the death of Roberto Carlos Montoya Valdez, a Guatemalan worker who fled agents at a Monrovia Home Depot and was struck by a car on the freeway. Advocates said Montoya was no criminal, only a father trying to provide. “He wanted a better life,” his niece said at a vigil. Homeland Security later claimed he wasn’t being pursued.
Home Depot has distanced itself, stating it receives no notice of ICE operations and must comply with all regulations. Still, workers like Jose, a friend of Montoya’s, remain haunted by his death but continue showing up for jobs out of necessity. Organizers with the National Day Laborers Organizing Network now monitor lots to warn workers of enforcement. Despite the risks, many insist on working. As Arturo explained, he never planned to stay in the U.S. but built a family here. “All you can do is work to survive,” he said.

gratitude to all supporters and attendees. The event was skillfully choreographed by Madhavi Bathula, who also co-hosted with Music Director Brij Joshi. Madhavi extended heartfelt thanks to devotees, volunteers, artists, and sponsors for making the gala a grand success.
Special appreciation was extended to print and digital media sponsors, including ITV Gold, Parikh Worldwide Media, MANA TV/TV5, Radio Zindagi, The Indian Eye, TV Asia, The Indian Panorama, Hi India, Akila News, The India Observer, Indus TV, JSW TV, Gujarat Darpan, and Vibrnz.com for their invaluable support in spreading the message of this noble cause. In addition to temple construction, Sai Pariwar continues to serve the community through weekly medical camps, yoga and wellness programs, food drives, cultural workshops, and festival celebrations, all open to the public.
Sai Pariwar invites everyone to join hands in this historic endeavor to build a temple that will stand as a beacon of faith, service, and unity. Donations can be made securely at www.saipariwar.org/donations
CHICAGO, IL – South Side residents shared personal accounts of rising auto insurance rates during a virtual Town Hall hosted by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office. Many said increases were due to factors like zip code, age, or credit score—rather than driving records. “As Secretary of State, I strongly believe driving records should determine insurance rates,” said Secretary Alexi Giannoulias. “Current practices force many Illinoisans to go without coverage, making roads less safe.” Residents called the pricing discriminatory. Sandra Herrera noted she now pays $132 more monthly than in a wealthier area, while Elaine Wilson, retired in Auburn Gresham, reported a rise from $295 in 2022 to $429 in 2025 despite an 800+ credit score. Kimberly Nevels labeled it “classic redlining.” The Town Halls are part of the “Driving Change” campaign, which aims to prevent insurers from using socio-economic factors to set rates, disproportionately affecting communities of color and disadvantaged neighborhoods. Giannoulias also launched a website, ilsos.gov/drivingchange , where residents can share stories and contact legislators. Additional virtual meetings are scheduled statewide from August 26 to October 15. Studies show Illinois drivers face significant disparities in auto insurance rates, including seniors and those with good driving records but poor credit. With rates up 18% in 2024 and projected to rise further, concerns grow over fairness, especially as insurers increasingly rely on social media and mobile data. Illinois, along with Wyoming, is one of only two states without prior rate review protections.
CHICAGO, IL- On Saturday, August 16, 2025, the National India Hub at 930 National Parkway in Schaumburg, Illinois, became the heart of culture, community, and compassion during the magnificent India Fest Parade. From 1:00 to 7:00 PM, the event celebrated Indian heritage with a vibrant parade, cultural performances, and cuisine. More importantly, it marked a milestone in community health: the public demonstration of the first Indo-US collaborative Hands-Only CPR Training Center in the United States—The National India Hub Community Health & CPR Training Center, founded by visionary Mr. Harish Kolasani in partnership with the Chicago Medical Society in 2024. Amid the aromas of Indian food and
Indian medical colleges, and the statewide “Saving Lives in Odisha” project (2023). Honored by the U.S. Congress as a “Global Champion of Resuscitation,” Dr. Murthy’s vision is clear: empower communities to respond confidently to cardiac emergencies.
The urgency is undeniable. Over 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually in the U.S., with survival rates below 10% without immediate action. South Asians face even higher risks due to genetic and lifestyle factors. The Training Center addresses this crisis through live CPR and AED demonstrations, supported by technology-equipped manikins and simple, one-hour courses. Participants learn to recognize
the rhythm of dhol drums, attendees witnessed a lifesaving revolution. Medical professionals and volunteers demonstrated hands-only CPR—a simple technique requiring no medical degree or equipment. In just 30–45 minutes, anyone can learn to save a life with chest compressions alone.
At the helm of this initiative is Dr. Vemuri S. Murthy, MD, a global resuscitation expert and founder of the Training Center. A longtime volunteer of the American Heart Association and former President of the Chicago Medical Society and the Indian American Medical Association (Illinois), Dr. Murthy has dedicated over three decades to advancing resuscitation medicine in the U.S. and India. His pioneering projects include Chicago Medical Society’s Project SMILE (2012), resuscitation curricula in
cardiac arrest, call 911, use an AED, and deliver compressions at 100–120 beats per minute—skills that can double or triple survival odds.
The program’s impact is already evident: a recent trainee saved a life with timely CPR, earning praise from physicians. Offered free of charge with registration, the training is accessible to all community members, backed by Good Samaritan laws that protect bystanders who act in emergencies. The India Fest Parade was not only a celebration of culture but also a call to action. With the National India Hub’s initiative, Schaumburg has sparked a nationwide movement—turning bystanders into lifesavers, one heartbeat at a time.

LOS ANGELES, CA- A growing scam known as the Phantom Hacker has become a devastating threat to seniors, draining retirement accounts and life savings.
The FBI Los Angeles office issued a warning on July 15, noting that the scheme has already cost Americans more than $1 billion since 2024. The scam unfolds in three phases, each designed to manipulate victims into handing over money under the illusion of protection.
In the first phase, a fake tech support agent contacts the victim by phone, text, or email, persuading them to download software that grants remote access to their computer. The scammer then urges the victim to open their financial accounts to check for unauthorized charges—providing the scammer with a clear target. The victim is told they will soon hear from the bank’s “fraud department.”
Next, a caller posing as a financial institution representative convinces the victim that their funds have been compromised by a foreign hacker. They are instructed to transfer money into a “safe” account, often through wire transfers, cash, or cryptocurrency, spread over days or weeks.
Finally, a fraudster impersonating a U.S. government official may contact the victim, insisting that funds be moved into an alias account for protection.
Cybersecurity expert Pete Nicoletti warns that the scam has become highly personal, with criminals using artificial intelligence to target victims’ interests, such as hobbies displayed on social media. He stresses the importance of family discussions to protect seniors. Recovering stolen funds is rare, with chances dropping to single digits after the first day of reporting.
showcases—from Bharatanatyam to Bhangra. Children carried handmade flags, elders shared freedom stories, and professionals connected over shared pride.
Behind the scenes, 200+ volunteers worked tirelessly, from directing traffic in mud to setting up emergency shelters.
Founder Harish Kolasani praised their resilience: “INDIA HUB is not just a place; it is a movement and a second home.” The event was coordinated by Sireesha Tipparaju with co-leaders Smita Shah, Surender Patel, and Usha Bhaskar.
Beyond celebration, INDIA FEST embodied service. The Health Fair and Eye Camp provided free screenings, while a Blood Drive collected vital donations. Over 500 contestants competed in chess, table tennis, singing, and dance, proving community spirit thrives even in rain. The Grand Mela added cultural flair with food, crafts, and fusion concerts, running till 8:00 PM.
A historic moment came with State Senator Laura Ellman’s announcement of a bill on Dignified Cremation, cosponsored by Senator Ram Villivalam and Rep. Janet Yang Rohr. Originated by Saily Joshi and supported by INDIA HUB’s PROJECT MOKSH, it ensures immigrant families can honor sacred rituals with dignity.
As skies cleared, INDIA FEST stood as more than an event—it was resilience, unity, and heritage on full display. Plans for INDIA FEST 2026, set for August 15, promise an even grander celebration.

WASHINGTON, D.C.- USCIS has updated its policy manual, warning non-citizens that making a false claim to US citizenship can result in a permanent ban from the country. The agency emphasized it is strengthening screening and vetting measures to detect those who “defraud or abuse the immigration system.”
The regulation, in effect since September 30, 1996, permanently bars any noncitizen who falsely claims US citizenship for immigration or legal benefits, with very limited exceptions. The new guidance, effective immediately, applies to all pending and future requests. The update incorporates a 2019 Board of Immigration Appeals ruling, which held that immigration penalties can apply even if the false claim was not made knowingly. A narrow exception exists for individuals who permanently resided in the United States before turning 16. USCIS stated it is also working to raise public awareness about the consequences of immigration fraud.
and wrote extensive commentaries on the teachings of Madhvacharya. His influence continues to inspire devotees worldwide. The three days of Aaradhane—Purva Aaradhana, Madhya Aaradhana, and Uttara Aaradhana— commemorate his life and spiritual legacy.
Day 1 & Day 3: Purva and Uttara Aaradhane
Both Purva and Uttara Aaradhane were celebrated at the Matha. Devotees offered prayers and participated in rituals such as Pooja, Maha Mangalarati, and Teertha Prasada.
Day 2: Madhya Aaradhane
The main celebration, held on Sunday, August 10 at the Gadhpuram Swaminarayan Temple, was an all-day

PORTLAND, OR — Varun Gupta, a former Intel product marketing engineer, has been sentenced to two years’ probation and fined $34,472 after admitting to stealing thousands of confidential company files before joining Microsoft in 2020. Gupta, 44, spent a decade at Intel with access to proprietary pricing strategies, product designs, and manufacturing data. In his final days at the company in January 2020, he copied roughly
4,000 files onto personal hard drives. Prosecutors said he later used the stolen material at Microsoft, including in negotiations involving Intel. Among the files was a presentation outlining Intel’s pricing strategy for a major client—evidence prosecutors called “instrumental” in securing his new role.
Assistant U.S. Attorney William Narus sought an eight-month prison sentence, arguing the theft was “deliberate and repetitive.” Defense attorney David Angeli countered that Gupta had already endured severe personal and professional fallout. Gupta had also settled a related civil lawsuit with Intel for $40,000.
U.S. District Judge Amy Baggio declined to impose prison time but emphasized the seriousness of the crime. She set the fine equal to the estimated cost of the prison term sought by prosecutors, noting Gupta’s reputation had been “severely damaged” while stressing the misconduct was not a one-time lapse. Gupta has since left the technology industry and relocated to France with his family.
The afternoon featured cultural performances organized by the Matha. Students of Rama Gurukula paid homage to Guru Raghavendra Swamy through shloka recitations. The day concluded with a pallaki procession carrying the Utsava Murti of Shri Raghavendra Swamy around the temple, accompanied by chanting and devotional music.
The three-day Mahotsava reaffirmed the devotion of the RAMA family and the enduring faith of devotees in Guru Raghavendra Swamy, regarded as a source of strength, guidance, and divine protection. The celebrations left the community spiritually uplifted and deeply connected to the saint’s teachings.
Preckwinkle Slams Federal Troop Threat
CHICAGO, IL- Cook County stands united with Illinois and Chicago in defense of democracy. The federal government’s threats to deploy troops to Chicago are uninvited, unwanted, and unjustified. True safety does not come from intimidation or militarization — it comes from investments in jobs, education, health care, housing, and opportunity. If the Trump administration truly wishes to help, it should send resources to strengthen our communities, not troops to silence them. We will not be intimidated, and we will not be silenced. Cook County will continue to fight for justice, fairness, and accountability. Together, we will prove that no show of force is stronger than a united community.

NEW YORK, NY - A 26-year-old man has been arrested and charged after allegedly leaving a suspicious package outside a police facility in Times Square earlier this week, authorities said.
The suspect, identified as Desean Maryat, is facing multiple charges, including reckless endangerment and making terroristic threats, according to the New York Police Department.
Police said the package was reported at approximately 10:32 a.m. in front of the NYPD substation located at West 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue. As a precaution, officers immediately evacuated and froze pedestrian zones around the busy Times Square area while emergency units responded.
The NYPD Bomb Squad was dispatched to the scene to investigate the item. After a thorough examination, authorities determined that the package was not dangerous. No injuries were reported. Maryat was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Information regarding his defense attorney was not immediately available.
Police confirmed that the investigation into the matter is ongoing.

NEW YORK, NY- Immigration authorities have detained about 50 children under 18 in the New York City area since January, with at least 38 deported, according to federal data. Last week, Martha, a mother from Ecuador, arrived at a Lower Manhattan immigration office with her 6-year-old daughter and 19-year-old son for a routine ICE check-in. Instead, all three were detained. Martha and her daughter were flown to a Texas detention center and deported a week later, leaving two of her children behind in New York. Her son remains in custody in New Jersey. The case drew sharp criticism, with Gov. Kathy Hochul calling the arrest of a young child “cruel and unjust.” Advocates say it highlights the Trump administration’s renewed policy of detaining and deporting families with children, a practice paused under President Biden in 2021 but now reinstated.
