"Trump Is Not Happy With India Because...": What Ex-Diplomat Said

Former diplomat Vikas Swarup says one key reason behind US President Donald Trump’s punitive tariffs on India is his displeasure over New Delhi’s refusal to credit him for brokering peace with Pakistan after the May military clash during Operation Sindoor. Trump has repeatedly claimed he prevented a “nuclear conflagration” between the two nations, while Pakistan acknowledged his role and even nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize — a snub that, Swarup says, has irked him.
Swarup added that Trump also resents India’s BRICS membership, viewing the bloc as anti-American and intent on challenging the US dollar. He believes the tariffs are part of US pressure tactics to secure greater market access for American dairy, agriculture, and GM crops,

Melania Trump threatens to sue Hunter Biden for $1bn over Epstein claim

First Lady Melania Trump has threatened to sue Hunter Biden for more than $1bn after he claimed she was introduced to her husband by sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Lawyers acting on behalf of the first lady, who married US President Donald Trump in 2005, described the claim as "false, disparaging, defamatory and inflammatory". Biden, son of former US President Joe Biden, made the comments during an interview earlier this month, in which he strongly criticised the president's former ties to Epstein.
Musk to Sue Apple Over Exclusion of X, Grok from Top Apps

Billionaire SpaceX, Tesla and X owner Elon Musk says he plans to sue Apple for not featuring X and its Grok artificial intelligence chatbot app in its top recommended apps in its App Store.
Musk posted the comments on X late Monday, saying, "Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either X or Grok in your 'Must Have' section when X is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps? Are you playing politics? What gives? Inquiring minds want to know." Grok is owned by Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI.
Swarup noted India has not caved in to the US pressure in trade talks to provide more access to the country's agriculture and dairy sectors, and Washington is exerting pressure tactics to get India to agree to its maximalist demands.
term US tilt toward Pakistan, calling WashingtonIslamabad ties “short-term and tactical,” driven partly by Trump family-linked cryptocurrency ventures in Pakistan. By contrast, he described USIndia relations as strategic and resilient, urging New Delhi not to “cave in” and compromise its strategic autonomy.
Swarup criticised the US for becoming the new “Tariff King,” with higher average tariffs than India, warning they will fuel inflation for American consumers. He said India was right to resist US demands, as yielding would only invite more pressure.
He also noted Pakistan’s agitation over India suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, accusing Islamabad of nuclear blackmail to attract external mediation. The former envoy stressed this phase in US-India ties is a “storm, not a rupture,” and will pass if India remains firm.
Trump Warns Putin of Severe Consequences Over Ukraine War

US President Donald Trump said Wednesday there will be "very severe consequences" if Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn't agree to stop the Ukraine war after Friday's summit.
Trump was "very clear" in a virtual meeting Wednesday with European leaders that the US wants to achieve a ceasefire at the upcoming US-Russia summit in Alaska, French President Emmanuel Macron said.
In the same meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he told the group that Putin "is bluffing" ahead of the planned meeting with Trump.
Putin, Zelensky said, "is trying to apply pressure ... on all sectors of the Ukrainian front" in an attempt to show that Russia is "capable of occupying all of Ukraine."
"India Has Been Bit Recalcitrant", Says US Treasury Chief On Trade Talks

New York: India has been a “bit recalcitrant” on trade negotiations with the US, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said.
“That's aspirational,” Bessent said on Fox Business on Tuesday, responding to a
question on wrapping up all the tariffs and trade deals by the end of October. “But I think we are in a good position. The big trade deals that aren't done or
Trump claims Washington DC murder rate higher than Islamabad

U.S. President Donald Trump made strong claims about the state of crime in Washington, DC, stating that the city has one of the highest homicide rates in the world, surpassing several notoriously violent countries. In a post on his social media platform 'Truth Social,' Mr. Trump wrote, "But now, DC is back under Federal Control where it belongs. The White House is in charge. The Military and our Great Police will liberate this City, scrape away the filth, and make it safe, clean, habitable and beautiful once more!."
aren't agreed - Switzerland is still around, India has been a bit recalcitrant,” he said, adding that US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and teams of lawyers “are busy papering all this over"."So I think we will have agreed on substantial terms with all the substantial countries. And as I've been saying for a long time, the President's (Donald Trump) doing peace deals, trade deals, tax deals,” he added. Even as trade negotiations between India and the US were ongoing, Trump imposed tariffs totalling 50 per cent on India, including 25 per cent for Delhi's purchases of Russian oil, which will come into effect from August 27.
Trump orders space regulations eased in win for Musk

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday (August 13, 2025) easing regulations for the private space industry, including eliminating some environmental reviews, in a move likely to please his erstwhile advisor, Elon Musk. The executive order, which said it aimed to "substantially" increase the number of space launches in the United States, was described by an environmental group as "reckless."

European leaders tentatively hopeful after call with Trump ahead of Putin summit
European leaders appeared cautiously optimistic after holding a virtual meeting with Donald Trump on Wednesday, two days before he meets his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.
Trump reportedly told the Europeans that his goal for the summit was to obtain a ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv. He also agreed that any territorial issues had to be decided with Volodymyr Zelensky's involvement, and that security guarantees had to be part of the deal, according to France's Emmanuel Macron.
Speaking to Trump had allowed him to "clarify his intentions" and gave the Europeans a chance to "express our expectations," Macron said.

Australia and Vanuatu agree to $328m security and business deal

Australia and Vanuatu have agreed to a 10-year deal, aimed at strengthening security and economic ties, worth A$500m ($328m; £241m).
The so-called Nakamal agreement - the result of months of negotiations - will transform Australia's relationship with its Pacific neighbour, leaders from both countries said on Wednesday. "We are family," Australia's deputy prime minister Richard Marles said, adding, "Our future is very much bound together". Vanuatu's leader Jotham Napat described the deal as "win-win situation" for both nations.
3 Killed, Over 60 Injured In Pak's Independence Day Celebrations
Karachi:
Three people, including a senior citizen and an 8-year-old girl, were killed during Independence Day celebrations in Pakistan's Karachi due to "reckless" aerial firing, while over 60 others sustained gunshot injuries, Geo News reported, citing a rescue official.
The incidents occurred across the city, with the young girl hit by a stray bullet in Azizabad and a man named Stephen killed in Korangi. At least 64 others suffered gunshot wounds in the citywide incidents, Geo News reported.

Their talks will take place at No 10 Downing Street, just 24 hours before
the summit between Trump and Putin. The Europeans have been sidelined from the hastily organised summit in Alaska and their phone call on Wednesday was a last-ditch attempt to keep Ukraine's interests and the continent's security at the forefront of Trump's mind.
Ex-US NSA Mocks Trump, Suggests Modi Nominate Him Twice for Nobel

Former US National Security Advisor
John Bolton has accused Donald Trump of needlessly antagonising India, calling the steep tariffs imposed on New Delhi "a mistake in the bilateral relationship." The ex-Trump aide's remarks came after President Trump hit India with some of the highest US tariffs -- 50% overall, including a 25% penalty for buying Russian oil. Bolton argued this approach was "backward" and "damaging" to ties between the two nations.
Trump defended his decision, claiming India was helping Moscow prolong its war in Ukraine. "India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War
While China also purchases Russian oil, Bolton pointed out that Beijing faced no such tariffs. "India is the one government to have suffered from Trump's effort to get a ceasefire in Ukraine," he noted.
Machine," he wrote on Truth Social. While China also purchases Russian oil, Bolton pointed out that Beijing faced no such tariffs or secondary sanctions. "India is the one government to have suffered from Trump's effort to get a ceasefire in Ukraine," he noted. Trump, who briefly engaged in a tariff battle with China in April, at one point imposing rates of up to 145%, has since held back on further escalation with Beijing. India, however, became the prime target of his latest trade salvo. Earlier in the day Trump lashed out at news outlets for unfairly covering his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. He said that the media will criticise him even if he got "Moscow and Leningrad free", as a part of the deal with Russia.
Canada to Revamp Express Entry in 2026 for Indian Students

Canada will revamp its Express Entry immigration system in 2026 by adding three new categories: senior managers, scientists/researchers, and military personnel. The move aims to boost competitiveness, innovation, and national defence. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says these groups will drive economic growth, productivity, and organisational goals. The update could affect Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility, as past category changes altered study field requirements. Francophone immigration, healthcare, skilled trades, STEM, education, and agriculture remain priority areas. Category-based selection targets candidates with indemand skills or language abilities, with annual reviews to match evolving labour market needs. Announcements are due next year.
Russia restricts calls via WhatsApp and Telegram

Russian authorities announced Wednesday (August 13, 2025) they were “partially” restricting calls in messaging apps Telegram and WhatsApp, the latest step in an effort to tighten control over the internet. In a statement, government media and internet regulator Roskomnadzor justified the measure as necessary for fighting crime, saying that “according to law enforcement agencies and numerous appeals from citizens, foreign messengers Telegram and WhatsApp have become the main voice services used to deceive and extort money, and to involve Russian citizens in sabotage and terrorist activities.”

Trump Eases Nvidia AI Chip Sales to China

- U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday suggested he might allow Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab to sell a scaled-down version of its next-generation advanced GPU chip in China, despite deep-seated fears in Washington that China could harness U.S. artificial intelligence capabilities to supercharge its military.
The move could open the door to China securing more advanced computing power from the U.S. even as the two countries battled for technology supremacy, critics said.
"Jensen (Huang, Nvidia CEO) also has the new chip, the Blackwell. A somewhat enhanced-in-a-negativeway Blackwell. In other words, take 30% to 50% off of it," Trump told reporters in an apparent reference to slashing the chip's computing power.
"I think he's coming to see me again about that, but that will be an unenhanced version of the big one," he added.
Earlier, the Trump administration confirmed an unprecedented deal with Nvidia and AMD (AMD.O), opens new tab to give the U.S. government 15% of revenue from sales of some advanced chips in China. The move sent shivers across Washington, where China hawks of both parties have long sought to keep Beijing generations behind U.S. AI technology.
Trump Criticizes Goldman CEO Over Tariff Forecast
New Delhi, Aug 13 (IANS) US
President Donald Trump has criticised Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, saying the bank made a “bad prediction” regarding the impact of his tariff policies on US consumers.
Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social that “David Solomon and Goldman Sachs refuse to give credit where credit is due.”
“They made a bad prediction a long time ago on both the market repercussions and the tariffs themselves, and they were wrong, just like they are wrong about so much else," he further said.
“David should go out and get himself a new economist, or maybe he ought to just focus on being a disco jockey (DJ), and not bother running a major financial institution,” he added. Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the bank but did not provide a reason.
could increase to 67 per cent, as per Goldman Sachs estimates. According to multiple media reports, US President Trump's trade adviser Peter Navarro also slammed the financial institution, saying, "The only entity that has less respect in terms of their data than the US Bureau of Labour Statistics these days is Goldman Sachs."

His remarks followed a Sunday note from a Goldman Sachs economist, which indicated that the impact of the new tariffs on consumer prices was just starting to show.
Consumers in the US have borne about 22 per cent of tariff costs up to June, and if the latest tariffs follow previous patterns, their share
Trump's statement followed data released on Tuesday showing that underlying inflation rose in July, despite a slower increase in goods prices. This reduced concerns over tariffrelated price pressures and increased expectations for a Federal Reserve rate cut in September.
US President Trump had imposed 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, citing high trade barriers. On August 6, he threatened to increase it to 50 per cent, citing that India continues to buy Russian oil. The US is demanding zero duty access for all its products into India, unwilling to offer any concessions on sectoral tariffs, such as 50 per cent in case of steel, aluminium and copper and 25 per cent for automobile and auto parts.
Musk's Tesla applies to supply power to British homes

Elon Musk's electric car and energy company Tesla has applied for a licence to supply electricity to British homes. Air India Halts DelhiWashington Flights from Sept 1

Air India will suspend flights between the national capital and Washington D.C. from September 1, mainly due to non-availability of multiple Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes as the legacy aircraft fleet is undergoing retrofit. The Tata Group-owned airline, which currently operates five weekly flights from Delhi to Washington using the Dreamliner, on Monday said the decision has been taken on account of a combination of operational factors to ensure reliability of its overall route network.
100,000 Jobs Lost in Saurashtra as US Tariffs Hit India’s Diamond Industry
“These units, employing 300,000–400,000 people, were already under strain due to slow offtake from US and Chinese buyers. The April tariff hike created uncertainty, drying up cutting and polishing work. Workers earning Rs 15,000–Rs 20,000 per month have been let go,”
The Indian diamond cutting and polishing sector is reeling from steep US tariff hikes, which have surged from 10 per cent in April to 50 per cent in August, triggering the loss of nearly 100,000 jobs in Gujarat’s Saurashtra region.
According to Gujarat Diamond Workers Union vicepresident Bhavesh Tank, the job losses escalated sharply in the past 10 days as tariffs first rose to 25 per cent and then doubled. Most redundancies have occurred in small units in Bhavnagar, Amreli, and Junagadh, after US customers postponed or cancelled orders, said a ET report.
“These units, employing 300,000–400,000 people, were already under strain due to slow offtake from US and Chinese buyers. The April tariff hike created uncertainty, drying up cutting and polishing work. Workers earning Rs 15,000–Rs 20,000 per month have been let go,” Tank said to ET. Larger diamond firms are reluctant to speak publicly about the impact, fearing backlash from stakeholders. Some displaced workers are finding employment in the lab-grown diamond (LGD) sector, but industry members warn that LGDs could also face tariff pressures.

“LGDs are also heavily dependent on the US market. If the 50 per cent tariff affects them, job losses will rise further,” said Jayantibhai Savalia, chairman (Gujarat region) of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) to ET.
Dinesh Lakhani, group director of Rs 17,000-crore Kiran Gems, said short-term impacts may include reduced production, temporary layoffs, and shorter shifts. “If order
volumes drop sharply, cost-cutting through job reductions may become unavoidable,” he noted.
India is the world’s largest diamond exporter, with the US and China being its key markets. In FY25, gems and jewellery exports to the US totalled $10 billion, dominated by cut and polished diamonds.
The industry is urging the government to fast-track trade agreement talks with the US, increase export incentives, offer interest subsidies, and speed up GST refunds.
Arvind Gupta, MD of Gallant Jewellery, warned that the US accounts for over 25 per cent of its exports. “High tariffs will dent volumes, squeeze margins, and displace thousands of jobs,” he said.
While the effects are yet to be fully felt in Surat , India’s largest diamond hub with 800,000 workers , some buyers are already exploring alternative manufacturing bases in Vietnam and Thailand to bypass US tariffs.
“If no viable solution emerges, units may be forced into drastic decisions,” said Vijay Kumar Mangukiya, MD of Dhani Jewels.

“Don’t
Rely on
America, Join BRICS”:
US Economist Advises India
Amid rising US-India trade tensions, American economist Jeffrey Sachs has advised India to reduce its reliance on the United States and pursue stronger ties with BRICS nations. He warned that a security alliance with Washington may not be effective, as the US is unlikely to accept large-scale exports from India on the scale it does from China.
Sachs commented on US President Donald Trump’s recent 50% tariff on Indian imports of Russian crude, describing Trump as impulsive and neither strategic nor rational. He noted that Trump assumed India would immediately comply with his demands, but New Delhi resisted the pressure, refusing to yield to threats, Highlighting the need for caution,

Jeffrey Sachs
Sachs emphasized that India should not treat the US as a primary partner. Instead, the country must pursue an independent foreign policy, carefully monitoring American statements and actions. Sachs also dismissed the notion that India could replace China as a major US trade partner. India was penalized with tariffs for buying Russian crude, while China, which imports more, faced no such restrictions. According to Sachs, the US seeks to maintain dominance by keeping countries like India, Russia, and China dependent. He advised India to remain independent, strengthen relations with other nations, and actively engage with BRICS to avoid succumbing to American pressure.
S&P Says Trump’s 50% Tariffs Unlikely to Hurt India’s Growth
S&P Global Ratings says US President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs on Indian imports are unlikely to affect India’s economic growth, and the country’s sovereign ratings outlook remains positive. The tariffs—25% imposed on August 7 and another 25% set for August 28 as a penalty for India’s Russian oil purchases—target a limited share of India’s economy, as exports to the US account for just 2% of GDP, explained S&P Director YeeFarn Phua. Phua noted that India is not highly tradedependent, and major export sectors like pharmaceuticals and consumer

electronics are exempt from the tariffs. India’s GDP is projected to grow 6.5% in the current fiscal year, matching the previous year, reinforcing the positive outlook. He added that foreign investment in India is driven more by the domestic market than US exports, citing the “China plus one” strategy. India’s trade with the US remains significant, with bilateral trade reaching USD 186 billion in 202425 and a trade surplus of USD 41 billion. Overall, S&P expects minimal longterm impact from the tariffs, ensuring India’s economic resilience.
SC reserves order in Delhi-NCR stray dogs matter

The Supreme Court has reserved its order in the ongoing case concerning stray dogs in the Delhi-NCR region, emphasizing the responsibility of all stakeholders seeking intervention. The bench noted that while addressing the issue of stray dogs is necessary, petitioners and authorities must acknowledge their obligations in ensuring humane management and effective implementation of measures. During the hearing, the Court stressed that public authorities, animal welfare organizations, and residents must collaboratively work towards solutions that balance public safety with animal rights.

Hotel Horror: Indian American in Sex, Labor, Drug Scandal

In a scandal rocking Nebraska’s Indian American community, five hotel owners of Indian origin are accused of running a web of labor trafficking, sex trafficking, and drug crimes across the Omaha metro area and beyond. Federal agents swooped in during pre-dawn raids on Aug. 12, rescuing 10 minors, some under 12 and 17 adults allegedly forced to work long hours for little to no pay in filthy, unsafe hotel conditions. Cockroach-infested rooms, drug-littered stairwells, and even Narcan kept at front desks paint a grim picture of what victims endured.
Prosecutors allege the defendants not only allowed but protected sex trafficking operations with both minors and adults targeted while shielding drug dealers from law enforcement. The alleged schemes extended to immigration fraud, including staged crimes to obtain U visas, smuggling workers from India, and even securing fake driver’s licenses in Washington state. The accused -- Kentakumar Chaudhari, Rashmi Ajit Samani, Amit Prahladbhai Chaudhari, Amit Babubhai Chaudhari, and Maheshkumar Chaudhari face federal charges after raids on 14 businesses, including hotels and “Brow and Lash” salons. Authorities seized more than $565,000 in cash and undisclosed quantities of drugs.
$4M Burglary Ring
Targeting Indian American Homes Jailed
A ruthless burglary ring that terrorized Indian American and South Asian families across Massachusetts has been brought down with three men now facing nearly a decade behind bars. Brothers Jovan Lemon, 30, and Paul Lemon, 31, along with Steven Berdugo, 29, admitted to a six-year crime spree that hit 43 homes in 25 towns, stealing millions in gold, diamonds, heirlooms, and cash. Prosecutors say the crew deliberately targeted Indian and South Asian households, betting they’d find rich stashes of jewelry and precious metals. The burglars used Wi-Fi jammers, masks, and precision planning to evade capture, even hauling away 400-pound safes stuffed with valuables worth up to $75,000 per piece. In total, they made off with more than $4 million. Jovan Lemon will serve 10-13 years in state prison; Paul Lemon and Berdugo each got 9-12 years
Another Hindu Temple Defaced In US' Indiana, 4th Incident This Year
Washington – A Hindu temple in Greenwood, Indiana, was defaced on August 10 in what officials and community leaders have condemned as a “hateful act.” The incident targeted the main signboard of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple, according to its public affairs division.
The Indian Consulate in Chicago called the desecration “reprehensible” and said it has raised the matter with law enforcement for prompt action.
Consul General Somnath Ghosh later addressed devotees, local leaders, and Greenwood’s mayor, urging unity, solidarity, and vigilance against troublemakers.
In a statement, the temple administration said the act had “strengthened our community’s resolve”

This was reportedly the fourth time in less than a year that a BAPS temple has been targeted.
to stand against anti-religious behaviour.
BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha described it as a “hate crime” and reaffirmed its commitment to combating religious bigotry.
US Congressman Nick LaLota also condemned the vandalism, stressing
that “religiously motivated crimes must be condemned and perpetrators held accountable.”
This was the fourth such attack on a BAPS temple in the US in less than a year, coming just days before the Hindu festival of Krishna Janmashtami on August 16.
Earlier incidents included the March desecration of the BAPS temple in California, which India’s Foreign Ministry had called “despicable,” urging strict US action against those responsible.
The recurring attacks have raised concerns about rising anti-Hindu sentiment in parts of the US. The Greenwood temple and the Indian Consulate have appealed for heightened community vigilance and stronger protective measures to ensure the safety of religious institutions.

Australia will recognise Palestine, says PM Anthony Albanese

Australia will recognise Palestine, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Monday (August 11, 2025), joining the leaders of France, Britain and Canada in signalling they would do so. His remarks followed weeks of urging from within his Cabinet and from many in Australia to recognise Palestine and amid growing criticism from officials in his government over suffering and starvation in Gaza. Australia’s government has also criticised plans announced in recent days by Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu for a fresh, sweeping military offensive in Gaza.

Trump Mulls Tariffs on China for Russian Oil

Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, has issued a stark nuclear threat from US soil, warning that if Pakistan faced an existential war with India, it would “take half the world down” with it. Speaking at a private dinner in Tampa, Florida, hosted by businessman Adnan Asad, Munir said, “We are a nuclear nation. If we think we are going down, we’ll take half the world down with us.”
He also threatened to destroy any Indian-built infrastructure on the Indus River, warning New Delhi against obstructing water flow to Pakistan. Referring to India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty after the April Pahalgam terror attack, he claimed it could endanger 250 million Pakistanis. “We have no shortage of missiles, al-hamdulillah,” he said. four-day conflict, promising Pakistan would reveal its own if India did the same. He cited Quranic imagery to threaten attacks on India’s most valuable resources, starting from the east and moving west.
In a self-deprecating analogy, Munir compared India to a “Mercedes” and Pakistan to a “dump truck,” suggesting that a collision would harm the car more. He also defended military involvement in politics, saying politics was “too serious to be left to the politicians.”
The Tampa event, attended by about 120 Pakistani-origin residents and reportedly an Israeli Defence Forces representative, barred cellphones. This was Munir’s second US visit in two months, following a June luncheon with President Trump, during which he nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

"We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital," he posted on Sunday. The Republican president also trailed a news conference for Monday about his plan to make the city "safer and more beautiful than it ever was before".
Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, said: "We are not experiencing a crime spike." Trump signed an order last month making it easier to arrest homeless people, and he last week ordered federal law enforcement into the streets of Washington DC.

New York:
US President Donald Trump has not yet decided on imposing levies on China for purchasing oil from Russia, as Washington's ties with Beijing “affect many things that have nothing to do with the Russian situation", Vice President J D Vance has said. “Well, the President said he's thinking about it, but he hasn't made any firm decisions," Vance told Fox News Sunday.
He was responding to a question about Trump imposing significant tariffs on countries like India for buying Russian oil and whether Washington will impose similar levies on China since Beijing also buys Russian oil. "Obviously the China issue is a little bit more complicated because our relationship with China, it affects a lot of other things that have nothing to do with the Russian situation," Vance said.
US Clears Gujarat’s Mahendra Patel in Kidnap Case

Indian-origin Mahendra Patel from Gujarat has been cleared of kidnapping charges in the US after spending six weeks in jail. The 56-year-old was arrested on March 18, 2025, in a Walmart store in Georgia, following accusations by 26-year-old Caroline Miller. Miller alleged Patel tried to abduct her two-year-old son after distracting her by asking for Tylenol medicine while she shopped with her two children.
According to her complaint, Patel attempted to lift the child from her lap, leading her to call the police. However, Walmart CCTV footage from 20 different cameras showed no such attempt. The video revealed only a brief conversation between the two, with no physical struggle or “tug of war” over the child as Miller had claimed.
The evidence led authorities to dismiss all charges, bringing significant relief to Patel, who had been wrongfully detained for over a month

Election
checked yet another claim made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently over alleged election manipulation,
"Trump SelfDestructing in India Tariff War"

His remarks came amid rising tensions between the US and India over the former's escalation of tariff to 50 per cent on Indian goods.
US President Donald Trump is “destroying himself” by waging a global trade war, warned American economist and Johns Hopkins University professor Steve Hanke, calling the tariff policy “absolutely rubbish” and “resting on sand.”
Tensions between Washington and New Delhi have surged after Trump raised tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent, citing India’s continued imports of Russian oil.
India, now facing the highest US tariff alongside Brazil, condemned the move as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable,” warning of severe impacts on textiles, marine, and leather exports.
Hanke urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to “keep their cards close” and wait for Trump’s “house of cards” to collapse. He argued that the US trade deficit stems from excessive domestic spending and that Trump’s tariff economics are fundamentally flawed. Russia and China also criticized the decision. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed US pressure as “illegal,” while Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong called the tariffs an act of bullying that violates the UN Charter and undermines WTO rules.
On Wednesday, Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods after an initial 25 percent hike. On Friday, he said no trade talks would be held with India until the tariff dispute is resolved and warned of a “1929-style Great Depression” if US courts ruled against tariffs.
Defending his policy, Trump claimed tariffs are boosting the stock market and bringing “hundreds of billions of dollars” into US coffers, declaring that America deserves “success and greatness, not turmoil and disgrace.”

Pawar Wants EC Probe Into Rahul's 'Vote Theft' Claim

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has urged the Election Commission (EC) to examine Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent presentation alleging large-scale “vote theft” during the elections.

Rahul Gandhi had recently claimed that the ruling party manipulated votes through systematic malpractices, presenting data and visuals to support his charge. His remarks have sparked sharp political reactions, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dismissing them as baseless and aimed at discrediting democratic institutions.
Pawar, however, maintained that any credible allegation regarding the sanctity of elections should be addressed seriously, adding that a transparent inquiry would help uphold the credibility of India’s democratic process.

India-Brazil Can Use US Tariffs to Boost Ties

In an exclusive interview with IANS, Brazil's Ambassador to India, Kenneth Felix Haczynski Da Nobrega, emphasised that India and Brazil are working to turn current global economic challenges, especially the tariff hikes imposed by the US, into new opportunities for deeper bilateral cooperation.
Referring to a recent call between Brazilian President Lula and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the envoy said the leaders are focussed on charting a long-term strategic road map despite uncertainties in global trade.

Flags A Big Cost Of India Tariffs
President Donald Trump has jeopardised decades of American efforts to bring India away from Russia and China, his former aide John Bolton has said, pointing to the hefty tariffs that the US has imposed on India for buying Russian oil. The former National Security Advisor also called out Trump's bias towards China over India and said it could be an "enormous mistake".
Trump engaged in a brief trade war with China in April but has since held back any further escalation - pending a deal, while he has hit India with over 50% tariff, including a 25% secondary tariff for what he said was funding the Russian war machine in Ukraine.

Speaking to CNN, he called it ironic that the secondary tariff, which was intended to hurt Russia, could push India closer to Russia and China, and perhaps make them negotiate together against the US. "Trump's leniency on the Chinese and heavy-handed tariffs on India jeopardize decades of American efforts to bring India away from Russia and China," the former aide of the President asserted. US foreign policy expert Christopher Padilla, a former US trade official, has also warned that the tariffs could pose a risk of long-term damage to India-US ties. It could raise questions later whether the US is a reliable partner, as the tariffs would remain in memory, he feared.

Cardiologist Explains Workout Collapses in 30s, 40s
The rising number of people collapsing during workouts is alarming. but did you know it is not the high intensity exercises you do that are the enemy, rather it is an underlying issue that many of us ignore, and which often leads to a heart-related issue. Dr Alok Chopra, MD, MBBS, a functional medicine expert and cardiologist, explained why people under 40 are experiencing a higher risk of heart-related diseases.
Why are people in their 30s and 40s collapsing during workouts?
According to the cardiologist, it is not the treadmill that’s to blame. Rather, it’s the underlying metabolic dysfunction that goes unnoticed for years. He suggested: “The key isn’t avoiding exercise — it’s detecting and addressing the silent risk factors before they turn fatal.”
Sharing the post Dr Chopra wrote, “Fast track to a heart attack. It's not the treadmills triggering heart issues
Harvard doctor lists 6 worst foods that can cause cancer

Cancer is one of the most feared diseases of our time. While genetics and environment play a major role, everyday food choices also quietly influence cancer risk. In a video that is going viral on social media, Dr Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard-trained gastroenterologist, highlighted six everyday food items that science links to cancer development and progression. But here's the eyeopener: reducing or eliminating these from the plate can have a serious positive impact on long-term health. Here are the 6 red-flag foods and what healthier swaps can nourish the body instead.
• Ultra-processed meats: Cancer’s silent invite
• Sugary drinks: Feeding cancer cells quietly
• Deep-fried foods: Inflammation in every bite
• Charred or burnt meat: More than just a grilling error
• Alcohol: A known risk for hormone-driven cancers
• Ultra-processed foods: Chronic inflammation’s partner

A lot of heart-related accidents happen during high-intensity workouts, what happens on a treadmill is the symptom surfacing. Not the cause. “If your body is already a ticking time bomb, a sudden workout might just light the fuse. The treadmill isn't the enemy. The enemy is what you're ignoring,”
for the under 40s, it's the metabolic dysfunction.”
What's the real culprit?
Pointing out how many of us now
know young people who have experienced heart attacks on a treadmill or during high-intensity training. Dr Chopra stressed that the real culprit is something else,
including:
• Poor Metabolic Health
• Silent Insulin Resistance
• Chronic Inflammation
• Stress Overload
• Poor Sleep and Recovery
• Nutrient-Deficient Diets. He further stated that though a lot of heart-related accidents happen during high-intensity workouts, what happens on a treadmill is the symptom surfacing. Not the cause.
“If your body is already a ticking time bomb, a sudden workout might just light the fuse. The treadmill isn't the enemy. The enemy is what you're ignoring,” he stated.
So, what should you do instead?
Early detection is the first step. In an Instagram post shared on July 22, Dr Naveen Bhamri, cardiologist, MD, DM, there are two tests that you should do along with an ECG to know the actual condition of your heart: TMT and ECO cardiography. Know all about these tests here.
Drinking Sugar Vs. Eating It: What Could Be Worse?
Sugar, in all its forms, can be harmful for your health, especially when consumed in excess. But when it comes to how you consume it, whether through sugary drinks or sweet treats, does one method do more harm than the other? The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might think. While both forms deliver sugar into your system, the way your body processes them can be very different. Here's a closer look at how drinking vs eating sugar affects your health and which one may be sneaking in more damage than you realise.
How Does Sugar Affect Our Body?

Sugar affects our body in several ways. When consumed, especially in large amounts, it causes a quick spike in blood sugar levels, giving us a short burst of energy followed by a crash that can leave us feeling tired and irritable. Over time, regularly consuming too much sugar can lead to weight gain, insulin resistance, and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and fatty liver. It also contributes to inflammation in the body and can even affect our mood and skin health. Completely cutting out sugar from your diet is nearly impossible, as sugar naturally exists in many healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, and dairy. However, the real concern lies in added sugars, those that are found in sodas,
packaged snacks, desserts, and even so-called 'healthy' options like flavoured yoghurt or granola bars. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends limiting added sugars to no more than 6% of calories each day. For most women, that’s no more than 100 calories per day, or about six teaspoons of sugar. For men, it’s no more than 150 calories per day, or about nine teaspoons.
Drinking Sugar Vs. Eating It: What’s Worse?
When it comes to sugar, not all forms are processed by the body in the same way. Drinking a sugary soda and eating a slice of cake might seem equally indulgent, but the way your body reacts to liquid sugar versus solid sugar can be quite different. According to Dr Swati Sharma, Dietitian and Nutritionist, PRB Health Care – Chain of Physiotherapy Clinics and Hospitals, Delhi, liquid sugar, like the one in soft drinks or juices, is absorbed much faster by the body than solid sugar. "This quick absorption causes a sudden spike in
blood sugar levels, which is harder for the body to manage. Solid sugar in foods like sweets or fruits comes with fibre or fat, slowing down absorption." Additionally, sugary drinks are easy to overconsume because they don’t make you feel full. On the other hand, desserts take longer to eat and may provide some satiety. Plus, drinks deliver sugar very quickly into the bloodstream, putting more strain on the body’s insulin response.
A 2019 study noted that sugary drinks, like soft drinks, pose a greater risk for obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome than sugary foods. This is likely because liquid sugars, especially fructose, are absorbed faster and in higher amounts, overwhelming the liver. Even fruit juices may raise health risks more than whole fruits.
Are Fruit Juices As Bad As Sodas?
Fruits are healthy, but fruit juices, especially packaged ones, don’t always offer the same benefits. Many packaged juices contain as much sugar as a can of soda, even if that sugar is naturally derived. While they may seem like a nutritious choice, drinking them regularly and in large quantities can quietly contribute to weight gain, blood sugar spikes, and other health issues. What feels like a healthy habit might actually be doing more harm than good if consumed in excess.

Ex-US Official Slams Trump’s 50% Tariffs

Kurt Campbell, former US Deputy Secretary of State, criticised Trump's tariffs on India in an interview with CNBC International. He said that the USIndia relationship is now under threat because of the tariffs.
After US President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian imports, citing New Delhi's imports of Russian crude, a wave of criticism has come from both sides of the American political spectrum. Kurt Campbell, former US Deputy Secretary of State, criticised Trump's tariffs on India in an interview with CNBC International. He said that the US-India relationship is now under threat because of the tariffs. "America's most important relationship in the 21st century is with India. Much of that is now at risk," he said. "The way President Trump has spoken about India and PM Modi has put the Indian government in a difficult position." He went on to advise India that, "Prime Minister Modi should not bend the knee to President Trump."
He said that the US pressuring India about its relationship with Russia could prove to be counterproductive.
"If you tell India that it has to sacrifice its relationship with Russia, then Indian strategists are going to do the exact opposite" Campbell said. He highlighted that the most important relationship for the United States going into the 21st century in technology, education and military cooperation is the relationship between the United States and India, adding that "much of that is now at risk"

New Delhi:
The Election Commission snapped back at Rahul Gandhi Friday evening and called his allegations - about voter fraud in collusion with the Bharatiya Janata Party - "new wine in an old bottle".

The Congress had then sought searchable access to the voter list - based on claims 36 voters may have been double-registered, an error the EC said had been rectified - but the court turned them down.

“No, not until we get it resolved,”
Mr. Trump said in the Oval Office on Thursday (August 7, 2025) in response to a question on whether he expects increased trade negotiations with India.

We don’t see women in comedy films Fatima Sana Shaikh
Fatima Sana Shaikh has consistently taken on diverse and bold roles throughout her career. From Dangal to Sam Bahadur and the recent Aap Jaisa Koi, she has portrayed characters that blend strength with vulnerability. In a recent conversation, Fatima spoke about what drew her to the role of Madhu in Aap Jaisa Koi—a character with an unapologetic edge. Her insight offers a glimpse into the motivation and creative curiosity that often fuel an actor’s journey of reinvention.
Fatima said, “After Dangal, I got a lot of roles like that (empowering), and I didn’t want to do it in the sense that - when people think of strong women, they think of aggressive women. I don’t know why! Just because we know what we want and we voice for equality does not mean we will fight with men, or we want to fight, or we want to smoke a cigarette. The idea is very stereotypical. We don’t want to do that. There is so much more; it’s about how we think and how we hold a space as
Sonali Bendre on Hosting Pati Patni Aur Panga
Sonali Bendre, making a vibrant return to television after a 16-year hiatus from hosting, has candidly revealed that leading the new celebrity couples reality show Pati Patni Aur Panga comes with its fair share of pressure.
Bendre—who shares hosting duties with comedian Munawar Faruqui—acknowledged the thrilling yet taxing nature of her role. “I’m truly enjoying doing the show, but I won’t deny that there is a lot of stress involved! Munawar is already familiar with this structure, but it’s all new to me. He’s so quick and sharp with his humour that I wonder if I’ll be able to keep up,” she said.

women. We don’t see that in films.” Speaking further about carefully picking roles and shattering the walls of predictability, Fatima added, “I don’t need to do a film that’s dependent on a topic or is issue-related. It’s okay if I’m doing a comedy film, but we don’t see women in comedy films. That’s so rare and sad, because we also have good comic timing. Fortunately, I have done such roles. But women-led films are far and few in the commercial sense.”
Fatima concluded with her take on the need to reinvent as an actress. She shared, “When I started it all, it was different, and now it is very different. Your relevance keeps changing. I’m exciting today, and tomorrow I won’t be. Two films have come along; it could be my luck. People are interested in me again. But, that’s the game.”
Driven by a clear intent to reinvent herself with each project, Fatima Sana Shaikh seems poised for an exciting phase in her career. Up next, she teams up with Vijay Varma for Gustaakh Ishq, a project that has already sparked curiosity after she shared a striking first look. Beyond that, Fatima is also part of an upcoming untitled film with Roy Kapur Films, as well as an untitled courtroom drama, further adding to her diverse slate of roles.

Salman Khan Reveals Why He Didn’t Buy IPL Team
Many Bollywood stars, including Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Preity Zinta, have invested in IPL teams, but Salman Khan isn’t among them. He shared that he was approached to own a team when the league first began in 2008.
Speaking at a public event in Mumbai, the actor revealed: “IPL offer hua tha us waqt, liya nahi…” When pressed on whether he harbors any regrets over the decision, Salman was quick to quash the notion. In his signature swagger, he responded, “Aisa nahi hai ki pachta rahe hai hum. Khush hi hai hum.” He added humorously that he now feels “IPL ke liye too old ho gaye hum,” a lighthearted way of closing the chapter on what might have been. Salman’s disclosure sheds new light on the league’s early years. While stars like Shah Rukh Khan (co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders) and Preity Zinta (co-owner of Punjab Kings) chose to invest, Salman opted out, citing personal reasons—even though the offer came his way.
Actor Ashutosh Rana, known for his powerful screen presence and thoughtful perspectives, recently shared a piece of advice for the younger generation of actors who prioritise fame over honing their craft. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama as part of the promotions for his latest film Heer Express, Rana reflected on the difference between being “famous” (prashiddh) and being “accomplished” (siddh).
“There is something called being famous and something called being accomplished,” Rana said. “If you add ‘pra’ to siddh, you get prashiddh (famous), but to truly be accomplished, you have to remove that ‘pra.’ Fame and accomplishment are not the same thing. Visibility will get you known among people, but it is up to you to decide how you want to be remembered. That choice is entirely yours.”
Using vivid metaphors, the actor explained how one’s expression reveals their essence. “A lion roars, an elephant trumpets, a dog barks, and a human speaks. From the sound someone makes, we can gauge their personality. So it’s on you to decide whether you want to be accomplished or merely famous.”
Rana further reflected on the larger purpose of an artist’s journey. “In life, this race we all

John Abraham Chooses Integrity Over Commercial Films

Actor John Abraham recently expressed his views on censorship and the difficulties it creates for filmmakers. In an exclusive conversation with India Today's Rajdeep Sardesai, the 52-year-old discussed the obstacles he faced in securing approval for his film, Tehran, to be publicly screened, emphasizing the challenges filmmakers deal with in balancing political sensitivities and maintaining their creative integrity.
John Abraham thanked the Ministry of External Affairs for permitting the screening of Tehran saying, “I don't think this film (Tehran) would have passed to be shown in theatres,
to be very honest. I'm grateful to the Ministry of External Affairs.” His remarks shed light on the bureaucratic procedures that can impact a film’s release.
When the consulting editor inquired if he would rather have no censor board or just minimal censorship, the actor stressed the importance of censorship but questioned how it is currently enforced. He remarked, “I think you need censorship, but the way it's being overseen, you know, could be a big question mark,” indicating the need for a balance between creative freedom and regulatory control.
Challenges for Gill, Jaiswal & Pant in India’s Asia Cup T20 Team
HiIndia Newsdesk
The Asia Cup is set to be India’s next major cricket tournament following a successful England tour. The BCCI selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is expected to announce the squad around August 19-20, depending on medical reports from the Centre of Excellence, including fitness updates for captain Suryakumar Yadav.
The selection committee faces a tough challenge in deciding the top-order batting lineup due to the abundance of in-form players. The current top five — Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya — have performed consistently well, making it difficult for others to break in. Abhishek Sharma is ranked the world’s No. 1 T20 batter by the ICC, while Sanju Samson’s recent performances as both a batsman and wicketkeeper have been impressive. Shubman Gill, despite his strong IPL and Test form, faces stiff competition as the selectors are reluctant to alter the settled combination. Similarly, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant confront challenges in finding spots. Yashasvi struggles to secure a place
Italian Athlete Mattia Debertolis Dies at World Games

Italian athlete Mattia Debertolis tragically passed away during the World Games held in China. The cause of his death remains unknown, and officials have not yet released further details. Debertolis was competing in the international multi-sport event when the incident occurred, shocking the sporting community and fellow athletes. The World Games, known for featuring sports not included in the Olympics, had gathered top athletes from around the world. Organizers have expressed their condolences and are cooperating with local authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the athlete’s sudden death. Fellow competitors and fans have shared tributes online, mourning the loss of the promising sportsman. The Italian sports federation has also issued a statement, honoring Debertolis’s dedication and talent. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues. This tragic event casts a somber mood over the World Games, highlighting the risks athletes sometimes face in high-level competition.

It was Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal who started the tenure of Gambhir before the coach moved on to Abhishek-Samson pairing at the top, with Suryakumar Yadav at No.3
given the crowded top order, while Pant’s inclusion is uncertain, especially since KL Rahul, another keeperbatsman, isn’t being considered for the middle order.
For the wicketkeeper’s role, Sanju
Samson is the likely first choice, while the second keeper spot is a contest between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel. Hardik Pandya remains the key all-rounder, with Shivam Dube expected to return after a good showing against England. The seam bowling lineup sees Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh locked in, with Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana competing for the third slot. In summary, the packed talent pool and established combinations make it challenging for Gill, Jaiswal, and Pant to secure places in the Asia Cup squad.
Harbhajan Criticizes BCCI Over Asia Cup Policy

Just weeks after the two India vs Pakistan matches in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 were abandoned due to Indian players' refusal to play against Pakistan, Harbhajan Singh has reiterated his stance of boycotting Indo-Pak cricket. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, etc. refused to play against Pakistan in the WCL, triggering a big debate on social media. However, shortly afterwards, the Asia Cup 2025 schedule was announced, with India and Pakistan drawn in the same group. As former cricketers, fans and pundits debate the Indo-Pak clash in the Asia Cup, Harbhajan isn't happy with the BCCI's stance.

Sarfaraz Khan Sends Strong Message to BCCI

Ignored Indian batter Sarfaraz Khan urged Mumbai cricketers to play the Kanga League, saying fear of failure shouldn’t hold them back. Sarfaraz, left out of India’s Test series against England, made a strong statement while scoring 61 off 42 balls for Parkophone Cricketers. He recalled stories of legends like Sunil Gavaskar, who once played a Kanga League match soon after returning from England, inspiring him and his brother to value the tournament. Sarfaraz emphasized that if greats like Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar had avoided the league due to fear, they wouldn’t have become legends. He added that performing well in Kanga League proves a player’s skill globally and encourages young cricketers. Sarfaraz’s body transformation and recent performance signal his intent to reclaim a spot in the Indian team.
10-Year-Old BritishIndian Bodhana Sivanandan Beats Grandmaster

Harbhajan stands firmly against the idea of an India vs Pakistan cricket match in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.
the nation from Pakistan, a cricketing contest between the two nations doesn't make sense, no matter the stage. "They need to understand what is important and what is not. This is as simple as that. For me, the soldier who stands on the border, whose family often doesn't get to see him, who sometimes sacrifices his life and never returns home - their sacrifice is so immense for all of us. Compared to that, this is a very small thing, that we can't skip playing one cricket match. It's a very small matter," Harbhajan was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
Bodhana Sivanandan, a 10-year-old British girl with Indian roots, made history on Sunday when she defeated Grandmaster Peter Wells in the last round of the 2025 British Chess Championships in Liverpool. She became the youngest-ever female chess player in history to defeat a grandmaster. Bodhana set the record at the age of 10 years, five months and three days to beat the record held by American Carissa Yip since 2019, who was 10 years and 11 months old when she defeated a grandmaster for the first time. Bodhana, a Woman FIDE Master, traces her roots to Tamil Nadu’s Trichy, where her family lived until her father, Sivanandan Velayutham, who works in the IT sector, moved them to London in 2007. Bodhana was born and brought up in London and despite her young age, she has already become the face of British chess. At the age of eight, she was even invited to 10 Downing Street in August 2023 by then British PM Rishi Sunak when he was planning to announce a financial package for chess in the UK.

Pilot Halts Flight Over Passenger Smoking Weed

SAN FRANCISCO, CA- A United Airlines pilot refused to fly from San Francisco to Cancun on Tuesday after a passenger was caught smoking marijuana in the aircraft lavatory, triggering a nearly four-hour delay.
According to a viral Reddit post from a traveler on Flight UA1679, the trip was first delayed for “technical issues,” then again when “someone smoked weed in the front bathrooms.” The passenger was removed, but the plane sat for about 40 minutes as the crew debated the next steps. Concerned about possible secondhand smoke exposure, the pilot decided not to
continue, and the passengers were asked to deplane while a replacement crew was sought. The captain reportedly told passengers, “I have 30 years left of my career at United. I’m not willing to risk getting drug tested when I get to Houston.”
The concern: under FAA’s zero-tolerance rules, any trace of marijuana metabolites — even from passive exposure — can be grounds for a failed test and loss of certification. Passengers described waiting in the terminal with a $15 meal voucher and a snack cart at the gate. The flight, originally scheduled for 8:50 a.m., was rescheduled to depart at 12:30 p.m.
Aviation expert Gary Leff called the fear “overzealous but understandable,” noting that while testing posi-tive from secondhand smoke in a well-ventilated aircraft is “laughably low,” the stakes for pilots are ex-tremely high.
Online commenters were far less sympathetic toward the offending passenger, with some calling for hefty fines, lifetime flight bans, and even compensation to all inconvenienced travelers.
USCIS Updates Green Card Age Rules
USCIS has revised how a child’s age is calculated under the Child Status Protection Act (CSPA), effective August 15, 2025. The agency will now use only the Final Action Dates chart from the Visa Bulletin, ending the prior use of the earlier Dates for Filing chart in some cases. The change aligns applicants in the U.S. (adjustment of status) with those abroad (consular processing), but because Final Action Dates are generally later, fewer children will qualify for CSPA protection. Some who previously remained classified as “children” may now move into adult visa categories, facing significantly longer waits. Pending applications before August 15 will follow the old rules, and USCIS will consider “extraordinary circumstances” for missed filings. Families and employers are urged to act promptly—filing early, consulting attorneys, and reviewing dependent cases—to avoid separation and recruitment challenges.
FBI Issues Missing Alert for Mahmood Shah Habibi
HiIndia Newsdesk

WASHINGTON, DC- The FBI Washington Field Office has released a missing person poster for Mahmood Shah Habibi, an Afghan-American businessman who vanished in Afghanistan in 2022. The release is part of the FBI’s ongoing investigation and its commitment to bringing Habibi home to his family.
At the time of his disappearance, Habibi — Afghanistan’s former director of civil aviation — was working as a consultant for Asia Consultancy Group, a Kabul-based telecommunications company. On August 10, 2022, he and his driver were taken from his vehicle near his home in Kabul City. They were reportedly de-tained by the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence, along with 29 other Asia Consultancy Group employees. “Three years have passed since Habibi was taken, and the FBI and our partners remain as dedicated as ever to finding him,” said Joshua Stone, special agent in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office’s Counter-terrorism Division. “We implore anyone with information to come forward so we can reunite Mahmood with his family.” Habibi has not been heard from since his arrest, and the Taliban has not disclosed his condition or location. All other detainees except Habibi and one other individual have been released. Anyone with information about Habibi’s disappearance or current location is urged to submit a tip at tips.fbi.gov, contact their local FBI office, or reach out to the nearest American embassy or consulate. Tips may remain confidential. The U.S. State Department’s Rewards for Justice program is offering up to $5 million for information lead-ing to Habibi’s location, recovery, and return. Details are available on the RFJ website.
Raja Krishnamoorthi Unveils Executive Branch Accountability Agenda to Rein in Trump’s Abuse of Power

SCHAUMBURG, IL — Raja Krishnamoorthi has released his Executive Branch Accountability Agenda — a comprehensive blueprint to curb Donald Trump’s abuses of power, restore checks and balances, and ensure no future administration can undermine American democracy in the same way again. The multi-pronged plan builds on Raja’s record, setting guardrails to address critical issues — from the lack of ICE oversight and misuse of personal data, to unchecked pardon power, presidentdirected mid-decade redistricting, and more.
“In the opening months of Donald Trump’s second term, he has pushed presidential power to the brink — expanding authority for himself and his allies while undercutting the rights, freedoms, and due process of Americans,” writes Raja. “He has deported citizens, violated data privacy, targeted political enemies, pardoned insurrectionists, profited off the presidency, and now threatens the Constitution by hinting at a third term and urging partisan redistricting to erase Democratic seats. My plan lays out how, as Illinois’ next U.S. Senator, I’ll use every tool available to
limit the damage and ensure that a Trump-like White House — one without respect for the rule of law, due process, and civil rights — never happens again.” Raja has a long record of holding Donald Trump accountable — from January 6th investigations to im-peachment proceedings. He has led efforts to block abuses of power, protect peaceful protestors, demand oversight of agencies like ICE, expose corrupt pardons, and prevent foreign influence in the White House. As a senior member of the Oversight Committee, he has worked relentlessly to uncover and stop Trump’s corruption. “This plan is my prescription for ensuring that a presidency which ignores the Constitution and puts profit and power above the people never happens again,” Raja continues. “Donald Trump is destroying the very fabric of this nation that made my story possible — one of legal immigration, naturalized citizenship, public housing, public schools, and food assistance. I may not achieve every goal in this agenda, but as your next U.S. Senator, I will never stop trying. The future of this country depends on it.”

Maximize Back-to-School Sales: Five Proven Strategies for Independent Retailers
HiIndia Newsdesk
The back-to-school season is more than a sales opportunity—it’s a chance to build lasting customer rela-tionships. By stocking smart, using POS technology, creating value-driven promotions, optimizing your store layout, and connecting with the community, independent retailers can compete with larger chains while keeping the personal touch customers love.
The back-to-school shopping season is one of the most profitable times of the year, with families spending billions on supplies, snacks, and everyday essentials. For convenience stores and independent retailers, it’s not just about notebooks and pencils—it’s about becoming the go-to stop for busy parents and students. Whether you operate a neighborhood store or a small retail shop, these five strategies will help you cap-ture more sales during this critical period.
1. Stock Beyond the Basics
While big-box stores focus on standard supplies, convenience retailers can win by catering to last-minute and overlooked needs. Stock pocket tissues, hand sanitizer, travel-size sunscreen, bandages, and personal hygiene products alongside grab-and-go breakfast items, protein bars, and healthy snacks. Consider offering ready-made “emergency kits” with spare pens, erasers, sticky notes, and other quick fix-es. Position these near checkout to encourage impulse buys. Your biggest advantage is convenience—parents will pay a premium to avoid another big-store trip.

checkout, while integrated payment options and cash discount programs give customers flexibility without sacrificing margins.
3. Create Bundles and Limited-Time Deals
Bundling boosts sales and simplifies shopping for customers in a hurry. Try:
• Study Session Kits – energy drinks, snacks, and school supplies.
2. Use POS Technology for Smarter Inventory
Your POS system should be more than a cash register—it’s your back-to-school profit tool. Advanced sys-tems like National Retail Solutions (NRS) track real-time inventory and sales trends, helping you stock what sells and avoid what doesn’t. Review last year’s data to see top performers, set low-stock alerts, and adjust orders as demand peaks. Dual-facing monitors can promote specials right at
• Lunchbox Specials – juice boxes, snacks, and napkins at a small discount.
Add urgency with time-limited deals like “Two-forTuesdays” and build loyalty programs for parents and students. A free coffee after five morning purchases or a discount card for after-school snacks keeps them coming back.
4. Optimize Your Layout for Speed
Parents and students want fast, hassle-free shopping. Create a dedicated “School Zone” near the entrance with clear signage for categories like Morning
Essentials, Study Snacks, and Quick Lunch Items.
Cross-merchandise to save shoppers time—place breakfast bars near coffee, or tissues beside hand sani-tizer. Keep aisles clear, popular items at eye level, and consider extended hours during peak season to cap-ture more traffic.
5. Strengthen Community Ties
Position your store as a local partner. Offer student discounts with school IDs, donate a portion of sales to school programs, or host a Teacher Appreciation Day with exclusive offers. Use social media to promote daily specials and share helpful tips like “The Forgotten School Supply Check-list” or “Quick Breakfast Ideas.” Engaging with local parent groups and sponsoring youth sports teams or school events builds goodwill that lasts well beyond the season.
Conclusion
The back-to-school season is more than a sales opportunity—it’s a chance to build lasting customer rela-tionships. By stocking smart, using POS technology, creating value-driven promotions, optimizing your store layout, and connecting with the community, independent retailers can compete with larger chains while keeping the personal touch customers love.
For more on how the NRS Point of Sale system can help maximize your back-to-school sales, call (877) 202-8112 or visit nrsplus.com.
If you want, I can also make a shorter, punchier version of this piece for use in email blasts or a social me-dia post so it drives quicker conversions during the season. That would make this a two-tier marketing as-set.

Indian American Couple’s $1.5M Contribution Advances Jain Studies at UCLA
LOS ANGELES, CA – Jasvant and Meera Modi have pledged $1.5 million to the University of California, Los Angeles, underscoring the need for peaceful dialogue in today’s polarized world. “The principles of Jainism offer a unique lens to address pressing challenges and opportunities,” Jasvant Modi said. “By raising awareness of these traditions in an academic setting, we can help the next generation shape a better world. A Back-to-School Reminder
From FBI Philly: Hoax Threats Are No Joke

PHILADELPHIA- As students across the nation return to classrooms this fall, FBI Philadelphia reminds the public that making hoax threats—spoken, written, or posted online—is a serious federal and state crime with lasting consequences. Even if intended as a joke, a fake threat of violence can lead to suspension, expulsion, arrest, and even im-prisonment. These actions not only disrupt schools and communities but can also permanently impact a young person’s future.
“The FBI takes every threat seriously—regardless of intent,” said Wayne A. Jacobs, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Philadelphia. “Hoax threats divert critical law enforcement resources, create fear, and can ruin lives. What may seem like a harmless prank can quickly become a life-altering mistake.”
Law enforcement must treat every reported threat as credible until fully investigated. Whether it’s said in person, sent via text, or posted on social media—including in private group chats— threats trigger real re-sponses and consequences. Many social media platforms now flag and report threatening content automatically, further increasing the risk of detection and legal consequences. If you see a threat of violence—such as a school shooting or bombing threat—immediately contact local law enforcement or your nearest FBI field office. Carol Bakhos, director of UCLA’s Center for the Study of Religion, called the chair a milestone, allowing greater focus on Jainism and other South Asian traditions as lived religions shaped by history, society, and culture.

Border Patrol Uses Rental Truck in Surprise Raid at LA Home Depot

LOS ANGELES, CA- U.S. Border Patrol agents carried out a controversial raid outside a Home Depot in Los Angeles, jumping out of an unmarked Penske rental truck and arresting 16 undocumented individuals from Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
The raid, captured on video, took place early Wednesday near MacArthur Park in the Westlake neighbor-hood—an area where day laborers often gather for work. Witnesses say the agents arrived disguised as potential employers offering jobs in Spanish before suddenly emerging from the truck in masks and tactical gear.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed the arrests but did not respond to questions about the tactics or whether individuals were specifically targeted. Penske, the truck rental company, said it did not authorize the vehicle's use for the operation and would contact DHS about its policies.
Civil rights groups say the raid may have violated a recent federal court order prohibiting
immigration agents from stopping individuals based solely on race, language, or location. That order followed reports of Latino U.S. citizens being unlawfully detained in past operations.
Just last week, an appeals court upheld the ruling, citing “unconstitutional” practices.
Videos shared by advocacy groups show officers piling back into the rental truck post-arrest. Border Pa-trol commander Gregory Bovino called the action “Operation Trojan Horse” and posted arrest videos, sparking further concern. Bovino has faced previous scrutiny for misleading the public about immigration sweeps. Jorge-Mario Cabrera of CHIRLA called the incident “an assault on civil liberties,” while the ACLU said it is investigating whether the federal government violated the court’s restraining order.
“This raid has shattered the sense of security immigrant communities were just beginning to feel,” Cabrera said. “It sends a chilling message that the government will stop at nothing to instill fear.”

New York Woman Pleads Guilty in $68 Million Medicaid Fraud Scheme
BROOKLYN, NY - Zakia Khan, 54, of Brooklyn, has pleaded guilty to orchestrating a multi-year scheme that defrauded Medicaid of over $68 million through two social adult day care centers she owned— Happy Fam-ily Social Adult Day Care Center Inc. and Family Social Adult Day Care Center Inc.—along with other affili-ated entities. Khan admitted to paying illegal kickbacks and bribes to Medicaid recipients in exchange for their participation in fraudulent billing activities between October 2017 and July 2024. According to court documents, Khan and marketers on her payroll referred Medicaid recipients to her facil-ities in exchange for illegal payments. These recipients were either not provided the billed services or were induced through kickbacks, violating federal healthcare laws. Khan also used various shell companies, in-cluding Responsible Care Staffing Inc. and Tanwee Services Inc., to launder the fraudulent proceeds and disguise payments.
In connection with her plea, Khan agreed to forfeit $5 million,

FBI Boston Urges Public to Beware of Rental Scams

BOSTON, MA- With rising rents, housing prices, and inflation, the FBI’s Boston Division is warning the public about the growing risk of online rental scams. As students search for housing and travelers book last-minute summer stays, scammers are targeting vulnerable renters with urgency and false promises. “Fraudsters prey on people desperate for a good deal,” said Special Agent in Charge Ted E. Docks. “Victims in our region lost millions last year. It’s critical to verify that a property is real and the person you're dealing with is legitimate.”
How the Scams Work:
One common scam involves fake checks. A scammer responds to a rental ad and sends a check for housing expenses— either for too much (requesting the extra be refunded) or for the exact amount before backing out and requesting a refund. Victims deposit the check and
refund the scammer, only to learn later that the check was fake, leaving them liable for the loss.
Another method involves duplicating legitimate real estate listings. Scammers copy photos and details, then repost with altered contact info. Posing as the owner, they claim to be out of town and ask for a de-posit upfront—often via wire transfer or digital payment—before disappearing.
2024 Losses (FBI IC3 Reports):
• Nationally: 9,359 victims, $173.6 million lost
• Boston Division: 372 victims, $6.1 million lost
• MA: 240 victims, $5.4M
• ME: 55 victims, $122K
• NH: 44 victims, $325K
• RI: 33 victims, $232K
Recent Incidents:
• York, ME: Friends wired $8,848 for a vacation rental—no reservation existed.
• Brookline, MA: A renter sent $4,915 for an apartment that wasn’t managed by the stated company.
• Manchester, NH: A woman nearly lost $3,000 but stopped in time after spotting red flags.
• Providence, RI: A couple lost $1,100 after the scammer demanded more money and then blocked them.
The FBI urges everyone to verify listings, avoid paying upfront, and report suspicious activity at www.ic3. gov.
Texas Firefighters Rush to Scene of Smoke During Hindu Religious Event

BEDFORD, TX- A video showing firefighters arriving at a Texas home during a Hindu havan has gone viral, igniting a broader conversation about cultural understanding and fire safety. The clip, originally posted on Instagram, shows a fire truck parked outside an Indian family's home during a housewarming ceremony that included a havan—a traditional ritual involving sacred fire. The overlay text reads, “Cultural misunder-standing 101: A Hindu puja is not a fire emergency.”

Officials are seen speaking with the family, though it remains unclear whether any violations occurred or if any action was taken. The incident has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media. One commented, “Doing this in foreign countries where homes are built with dry wood—this is dangerous and unacceptable.” Others argued that the family should have informed the fire department or obtained a permit. However, many came to the family's defense, emphasizing religious freedom. “They weren’t harming an-yone. What about people who barbecue in garages?” asked one user. Another shared, “As a first-generation Indian American, this makes me proud. We’ve done pujas for every home and milestone.”
While the video highlighted concerns over fire safety, it also exposed gaps in cultural awareness. The de-bate reflects broader challenges faced by immigrant communities in balancing traditional practices with local laws and perceptions in their adopted countries.

Indian Scholar Allowed to Work Again, U.S. Deportation Case Still Pending

WASHINGTON, DC – The Trump administration has reached a settlement allowing Indian Georgetown University researcher Badar Khan Suri to return to his academic position while legal proceedings over his de-portation continue.
The agreement, disclosed in court filings on August 5, partially resolves a dispute that began in March when ICE agents arrested Suri without prior notice outside his Arlington, Virginia, home as part of a crack-down on pro-Palestinian academics.
Under the settlement, Suri can resume his role as a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service. This is a significant development after ICE terminated his record in March, effectively halting his ability to work

While the settlement restores Suri’s employment and his family’s records, it does not resolve the central legal question of whether he can remain in the U.S. U.S. District Judge William Young is still considering whether the administration engaged in an unconstitutional practice of targeting immigrants based on their political speech, according to Politico.
Suri’s wife, Mapheze Saleh, is a U.S. citizen, but officials targeted Suri partly due to her father’s prior advi-sory role to Hamas leadership. Under the agreement, the administration must maintain Suri’s status unless new, independently verified legal grounds arise, in which case he must be given 21 days’ notice before any further action is taken.

Racist Attack on Indian Couple in Canada Caught on Camera

What should have been a simple evening in Peterborough, Ontario, turned into a nightmare for an Indian couple after they were targeted in a parking lot by a group of young men in a pickup truck hurling racist abuse, death threats, and vulgar gestures.
In video clips now spreading across social media, the men can be heard screaming: “Big nose,” “You fing immigrant,” and “Do you want me to get out of the car and fing kill you?” One of them even stepped out, slammed into the couple’s vehicle, and performed an obscene “humping” gesture against it — all while shouting insults.
The victims say that when they tried to film the license plate for evidence, the men rammed their truck into their car, causing visible damage. Rather than backing off, the group continued their intimidation in full view of passersby, as if confident they would face no consequences. But the internet had other plans. Outrage was quick to follow, with social media users rallying to identify the suspects. Within days, the Peterborough Police Service

The incident has once again brought to the fore, the growing incidents of racism not just in Canada but in entire North America. But what is disturbing is that the accused in this case are young adults – an age group generally seen as progressive and more accepting to people from other faiths and cultures.

ST. CHARLES, IL — Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08) issued the following statement in response to the bomb threat made against members of the Texas House Democratic Caucus currently staying in St. Charles, Illinois, which is within his congressional district:
“Any threat of violence against elected officials is a direct attack on the principles of our democracy. These types of threats not only endanger lives, but also seek to undermine the democratic process and

Two Indian Nationals Arrested for
Illegal Border Crossing in Maine

BRIDGEWATER, ME — U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested two Indian nationals on August 1 for illegally crossing the U.S.-Canada border on foot near Bridgewater. The individuals are now facing prosecution and will be placed in removal proceedings. The incident is notable, as only 15 Indian nationals have been ap-prehended in the Houlton Sector over the past three fiscal years.
Acting Chief Patrol Agent Craig Shepley highlighted the consequences of illegal entry. “If you cross our borders illegally, you will be apprehended, prosecuted, and deported back to your country of origin,” Shepley said. This development comes as U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) rolls out a new voluntary departure initiative. Under the program, individuals unlawfully present in the U.S. can use the CBP One app to signal their intent to return to their home country. Participants in the program may be eligible for a $1,000 stipend, travel assistance, and help with documentation. While preparing to leave, they are also de-prioritized for detention.

Jaykumar Jayantibhai Raval of Flushing, New York, is facing a felony charge after al-legedly attempting to scam an elderly woman out of $61,101—just weeks after she had already been defrauded of $84,000.
A detective familiar with similar schemes noted that such scams typically involve coercing victims into pur-chasing gold bars, which are later melted down to eliminate serial numbers. The proceeds are then laun-dered through purchases of legitimate goods, such as jewelry.
Two weeks later, an officer discovered that 24 gold bars had been purchased at Express Jewelry Center, located at 6 N. Main St. in Concord. A detective was subsequently assigned to the case. Investigators also found that the scammers were still in contact with the victim, using multiple phone numbers and impersonating law enforcement officers. According to an affidavit, they posed as members of the Merrimack County Sheriff’s Office, falsely claiming the woman had unresolved legal issues. The scammers were also reported to have foreign accents. The case was bound over to Merrimack County Superior Court on July 14. Raval is scheduled for a dispositional conference on September 25.
