Ukraine Rejects Russian Control of Crimea, Trump Criticizes Zelensky
US President Donald Trump has accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of hindering peace negotiations by refusing to accept Russian control of Crimea. Posting on Truth Social, Trump said a peace deal was “very close,” but warned Zelensky’s rejection of USbacked terms would only “prolong” the conflict. His comments came after US Vice-President JD Vance outlined Washington’s vision for ending the war, suggesting a deal that would “freeze territorial lines” near current positions. Ukraine, however, has long maintained it will not cede Crimea, which Russia annexed illegally in 2014. Speaking to reporters, Zelensky said: “There’s nothing to talk about here. This is against our constitution.”
The exchange between Trump and Zelensky marks the latest tension in a rocky relationship. The two previously clashed in a heated Oval Office meeting in February.
Trump Sued Over Tariffs
The states, including Arizona, New York, Minnesota, Illinois, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Nevada, New Mexico, Vermont and Oregon, are the latest parties to take the Trump administration to court over the tariffs.
Twelve US states, mostly led by Democratic attorneys general, have sued President Donald Trump over his sweeping tariff policy, arguing it’s unconstitutional and economically damaging. The lawsuit, filed in the US Court of International Trade, claims Trump lacks the authority to impose broad tariffs without congressional approval.
The states—including Arizona, New York, Minnesota, Illinois, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Nevada, New Mexico, Vermont, and Oregon—say Trump’s actions misuse emergency powers under a 1977 law and violate the separation of powers.
“These edicts reflect a national trade policy that now hinges on the president’s whims,” the lawsuit states. Arizona
Attorney General Kris Mayes called the tariffs “economically reckless” and “illegal,” warning they will burden consumers.
Oregon AG Dan Rayfield echoed the concern, saying the tariffs impact daily costs from groceries to utilities.
California filed a separate lawsuit earlier, with Governor Gavin Newsom calling Trump’s approach “the worst owngoal in the history of this country.”
Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs—145% on Chinese imports and 10% on other partners—have drawn global backlash. China retaliated with 125% duties on US goods. Trump claims his policy will restore US manufacturing jobs, though critics say it’s hurting trade and spiking prices.
Trump, when asked if the US was willing to recognize Russia’s claim to Crimea, deflected: “I have no favourites. I just want to see the war end.” Vance hinted that both sides would have to make territorial compromises but offered no specifics.
Recognizing Russian sovereignty over Crimea would be a major reversal of post-war norms that oppose border changes by force— something Kyiv has repeatedly rejected. The war's toll on civilians continued overnight, with multiple Russian missile and drone attacks across Ukraine. In Kyiv, two people were killed and over 50 injured, including children and a pregnant woman, as drone wreckage caused fires and collapsed buildings. In Kharkiv, explosions were also reported. In the eastern city of Marhanets, a drone strike on a bus killed nine people and injured dozens. The exchange between Trump and Zelensky marks the latest tension in a rocky relationship. The two previously clashed in a heated Oval Office meeting in February.
Trump Cabinet Poised for Return as Musk Steps Back: Sources
President Donald Trump’s cabinet is preparing to regain control over federal staffing and budget decisions as Elon Musk steps back from leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), according to two government sources.
DOGE, established by Trump on his first day in office and led by Musk, has pushed deep spending cuts across federal agencies— triggering mass layoffs, contract cancellations, and service reductions. However, Musk announced plans to cut back his government involvement to just one or two days a week to refocus on Tesla, raising questions about DOGE’s future direction.
expected to gain more autonomy over spending cuts, moving away from DOGE's sweeping mandates toward targeted measures. The young engineers Musk installed at DOGE may also face diminished roles and increased scrutiny. Despite Musk’s reduced role, White House spokesperson Harrison Fields said DOGE operations remain unchanged, calling it “almost on cruise control.” Experts like law professor Nick Bednar agree that DOGE’s momentum will likely continue due to executive orders and cabinet alignment with its mission.
Trump's cabinet will likely move to limit the influence of DOGE employees and reassert control over budgets and staffing, government sources said.
Cabinet secretaries have frequently clashed with Musk over DOGE’s sweeping authority, especially as it interfered with traditional agency control.
Tensions peaked in a March cabinet meeting, where Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confronted Musk over foreign aid and proposed air traffic controller layoffs. With Musk stepping back, cabinet members are
Musk, who has helped shape hiring freezes and agency downsizing, claims the heavy lifting is “mostly done.” Amy Gleason, named acting administrator, may take on a larger role, though Musk’s day-to-day influence remains ambiguous.
Supporters argue Musk’s exit could make DOGE more effective by reducing distractions. “With less attention on Musk, DOGE may function more smoothly,” said watchdog Tom Schatz.

India Will Identify, Track & Punish Every Terrorist
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday sent a strong message following the brutal terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a local resident.
Speaking in Madhubani, Bihar, Modi paid silent tribute to the victims before addressing the nation’s grief and anger. “The entire country is in pain,” he said. “Innocent lives were lost — sons, daughters, life partners — from different states and languages, yet united as one nation. From Kargil to Kanyakumari, there is grief and rage.”
Condemning the attack as an assault on India’s soul, the Prime Minister promised an uncompromising response.
Dal Lake Deserted, Tourists Flee After Kashmir Attack
New Delhi: In less than 48 hours of the Pahalgam terror attack that left 25 tourists and a Kashmiri dead, scenes in the Valley have completely changed from what they were two days back. Flights to Srinagar are empty and those coming out of it are packed with people fleeing the Valley. The Dal Lake, a symbol of Kashmir's unequalled natural beauty, is deserted, a far cry from the bustling scenes two days ago. Shikaras, in high demand till two days ago, are now parked in what is likely to be a long wait for tourists. This attack, which crossed the big red line by targeting tourists, appears to have turned the clock back for the Valley, which was moving fast on its way to recovery from the dark days of militancy.
“Those who carried out and plotted the attack will receive a punishment they cannot imagine,” he declared. “The time has come to raze whatever remains of the terror haven. The will of 140 crore Indians will crush the masters of terror.”
Switching to English, Modi addressed the international community directly: “India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the earth. Terrorism will not go unpunished.” He expressed gratitude to global leaders and nations who have shown solidarity. “Everyone who believes in humanity stands with us,” he added, reaffirming that India’s spirit is unbreakable and justice will prevail.

Ex-US Official Slams Pakistan Over J&K Attack
Ex-Pentagon official Michael Rubin likened Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir to the late Al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden, while pinning Pakistan for its role in the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. Mr Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, told ANI, "The only difference between Osama Bin Laden and Asim Munir is that Osama Bin Laden lived in a cave and Asim Munir lives in a palace, but beyond that, the two are the same, and their end should also be the same." He added that the only response to the Pahalgam attack is the formal designation of Pakistan as a state sponsor of terror and of Asim Munir as a terrorist by the United States.
US Court Temporarily Restores Legal Status Of 133 Students, Majority Indians
In a significant relief for international students, a federal court in Georgia has temporarily reinstated the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) records for 133 students, most of whom are Indian. These students had their SEVIS status terminated and visas cancelled by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), prompting a lawsuit.
Filed in response to the Trump administration’s actions, the lawsuit claimed that the students were unfairly removed from the SEVIS system—an online database used to monitor international students— without due cause. While a few
According to the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), ICE has terminated SEVIS records of as many as 4,736 international students since January 20.
plaintiffs had minor encounters with law enforcement, none had criminal convictions, the lawsuit noted.
The court issued a temporary restraining order on April 18, directing authorities to reinstate the students’
legal status by April 22. According to attorney Charles Kuck, all affected students are now reinstated and can resume studies or participate in the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program.
The next court hearing is expected soon. The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) reported that since January 20, 2025, ICE has terminated SEVIS records for 4,736 international students, predominantly Indians. Others impacted include students from China, Nepal, South Korea, and Bangladesh. The administration has cited minor infractions such as traffic violations or breaches of university rules as reasons for termination.

Community Mourns Tiru Chabba After Fatal Shooting in Florida — Fundraiser Now Live
GREENVILLE, SC – A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $30,000 for the family of Tiru Chabba, a husband and father of two, tragically killed in the April 17 shooting at Florida State University. The fundraiser, launched by the Joshi-Chabba family, urges the community to support Chabba’s children as they face life without their beloved father. “In the wake of this heartbreaking tragedy, we come together to mourn the loss of a cherished member of our community,” the fundraiser reads. “His absence leaves a profound void, but his spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.”
Chabba, 45, from Greenville, South Carolina, was in Tallahassee on a work trip with Aramark, a Philadelph-iabased food services company. What was supposed to be a routine day turned
Tiru Chabba
into tragedy when a gun-man opened fire on campus, killing Chabba and Robert Morales, FSU’s longtime dining coordinator.
Chabba’s sudden death has devastated his wife and two young children. “Instead of hiding Easter eggs and visiting with friends and family, they’re living a nightmare where this loving father and devoted husband was stolen from them in an act of senseless and preventable violence,” said attorney Bakari Sellers, repre-senting the family.
An emotional vigil was held on campus April 18, where FSU officials and community members honored the lives of Chabba and Morales. Morales was remembered fondly for his years of service to the university.
Aramark shared a statement expressing its grief: “We are absolutely shaken by the news, and our deepest sympathies are with the family and our entire Aramark community.”

Judge Halts ICE Office Reopening at Rikers
NEW YORK, NY — A New York judge has temporarily halted the return of ICE offices to Rikers Island.
On Monday, Judge Mary Rosado ordered the city not to negotiate or implement any Memorandum of Under-standing (MOU) with the federal government until a Friday hearing on a lawsuit challenging the executive order.
The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, claims First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro signed the order without conducting an independent review and alleges Mayor Eric Adams orchestrated the move as part of a deal with the Trump administration. The order would allow federal agents to assist in targeting interna-tional gangs like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua—both labeled as terrorist groups.
Critics argue this agreement would enable ICE to use the Rikers office to ramp up deportation efforts.

BRIEF NEWS
Trump Slams Fed; Stocks, Dollar Tumble
US stocks and the dollar plunged again as President Donald Trump intensified his attacks on the US central bank boss calling him "a major loser" for not lowering interest rates. In a social media post, Trump called on Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell to cut interest rates "preemptively" to help boost the economy, saying Powell had been consistently too slow to respond to economic developments.
Harvard Sues Trump Over Funding Freeze
Harvard University filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration to stop billions of dollars in proposed cuts. The suit filed Monday is part of a feud that escalated last week when the elite institution rejected a list of demands that the Trump administration said was designed to curb diversity initiatives and fight anti-semitism at the school. President Donald Trump froze $2.2bn (£1.7bn) of federal funding and also threatened the university's tax-exempt status.
Trump Supports Defense Chief Amid Signal Leak

Indian-Origin MP Urges Unity After Temple Vandalism in Canada
Images shared online by the Canadian Hindu Chamber of Commerce showed the temple walls sprayed with pro-Khalistan slogans.
A Hindu temple in Surrey, Canada, was defaced with pro-Khalistan graffiti on April 19, marking yet another act of vandalism targeting religious institutions in the country. The incident occurred at the Shree Lakshmi Narayana Mandir, shortly after similar graffiti was reported at the Khalsa Diwan Society’s Ross Street Gurdwara in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Indian-origin Canadian MP Chandra Arya strongly condemned the act, labeling it “a chilling reminder of the growing influence of Khalistani extremism.” In a statement on social media, Arya said, “The attacks on Hindu temples that began years ago continue today. Khalistani elements are well-organized, well-funded, and wield political clout, allowing them to assert dominance and silence Hindu
voices in Canada.” Arya also highlighted that even Sikh institutions are not immune, pointing to the targeting of the Vancouver gurdwara. Following the incident, the Khalsa Diwan Society released a statement describing the act as part of “an ongoing campaign by extremist forces to instill fear and division within the Canadian Sikh community.”
Calling for solidarity, Arya urged both Hindu and Sikh communities to unite and press for urgent action.
“We must rise together and demand immediate, decisive measures from authorities at all levels,” he stated. These acts of vandalism underscore growing concerns over extremist influence in Canada and its impact on the nation’s multicultural and religious harmony.

Supreme Court Halts Deportations Under Old Wartime Law—for Now
The Supreme Court on Saturday blocked, for now, the deportations of any Venezuelans held in northern Texas under an 18th century wartime law.

Judge Temporarily Blocks Mass Firings at CFPB
A U.S. federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s plan to lay off nearly 1,500 employees at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), citing concerns over possible violations of previous court orders requiring individual assessments before terminations.

Trump Warns U.S. May Exit Ukraine Peace Talks Without Progress
Donald Trump has said the US will "take a pass" on brokering further Russia-Ukraine talks if Moscow or Kyiv "make it very difficult" to reach a peace deal.
The US president told reporters in the Oval Office on Friday that he was not expecting a truce to happen in "a specific number of days" but he wanted it done "quickly".
His comments came hours after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that the US would abandon talks unless there were clear signs of progress within days.
"We're not going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end," Rubio said, adding that the US had "other priorities to focus on".
This comes as Russian strikes on Ukraine continue, with two people reported killed and more than 100 injured in the north-eastern cities of Kharkiv and Sumy on Friday.
Trump spoke after Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned earlier in the day that the US may “move on” from trying to secure a Russia-Ukraine peace deal if there is no progress in the coming days, after months of efforts have failed to bring an end to the fighting
Half of Recent U.S. Visa Revocations Involved Indian Students: Report
A recent crackdown by U.S. immigration authorities has disproportionately affected Indian students, who accounted for nearly 50% of 327 visa revocations recorded by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). In a report titled The Scope of Immigration Enforcement Actions Against International Students, AILA notes that students from China followed at 14%, with others from South Korea, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
Over the past four months, the U.S. State Department and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have intensified scrutiny of international students, allegedly
using AI tools to screen data, including students’ activism and social media activity. Critics argue this could lead to wrongful targeting, especially of students with no criminal history.
In March, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the “Catch and Revoke” program, which monitors visa holders for signs of anti-Semitism or support for Hamas and Palestinian causes. Concurrently, the Department of Homeland Security’s SEVIS system
has terminated the visa status of over 4,700 students, mostly F-1 visa holders.
OPT participants—who are allowed to work in the U.S. for a year postgraduation—make up about 50% of the 327 revocations, leaving many suddenly unemployed. The most affected states include Texas, California, New York, Michigan, and Arizona.
According to an Associated Press review, around 1,000 students have had their visas revoked or legal status terminated since late March. The Indian government is monitoring the situation, with MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirming that the embassy is in touch with affected students.
According to a report by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), about half of the 327 recent visa revocations collected by the organisation have been of Indian students.

Wildfires swept through southern California in the US, floods devastated parts of Brazil, and an unrelenting heatwave is being experienced in South Asia. All of this, in the first four months of 2025. With the climate crisis fast becoming the backdrop of our lives, many of us have wondered, ‘How did we get here? What can we do, moving forward?’ Armaan Malik says his next single, What in the world, is born from these questions. Nushrratt: "Stars Get Roles I Can't"
Nushrratt Bharuccha, who was recently seen in the Amazon Prime original Chhorii 2, opened up about her struggles to get meatier roles despite delivering hits in an interview with Shubhankar Mishra . When compared with contemporaries like Shraddha Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha's careergraphs, Nushrratt admitted there are directors whom Shraddha and Sonakshi can approach but she can't.
"They definitely have an advantage. They know the industry, they know the people. And if they don't, their parents do. So what happens is, they reach places I cannot. They can knock on doors I may not even know the address of. If I want to meet a director, who's going to give me his number? Where should I even ask for the director's address? This is a very practical problem - but it's a real one," recalled Nushrratt. Nushrratt made her debut with Kal Kissne Dekha but she was first noticed in Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011). Sonakshi Sinha made her big debut opposite Salman Khan in Dabangg (2010). Shraddha Kapoor made her debut with Teen Patti, which was a flop at the box office. But the debut films' performances didn't affect Sonakshi or Shraddha's career trajectory. Nushrratt pointed out they keep on getting offers whereas she was approached by a lesser number of people.

Manoj Muntashir Warns Anurag Kashyap Over Brahmin Remark
You’ve put out a very passionate video in response to Anurag Kashyap’s shocking slur against the Brahmin community?
I feel this man has crossed all limits of decency. Bhai Sahab, this arrogant and ignorant individual, who claims to be a filmmaker and social commentator, is completely out of his mind. He has clearly lost not just his sanity but also his creative spark. His frustration stems from his repeated failures, and he is in desperate need of counselling. Would he dare make such a comment about any other community? I challenge him to try. He would be ripped apart and left to rot. Hindus have
always been benevolent and tolerant, and that grace has often come at the cost of their dignity. But let’s not forget— Durvasa and Parashuram were Brahmins too. Their rage is legendary. Do you think Kashyap has serious anger management issues?
Don’t test our patience any further. The consequences won’t be pleasant. This man has long been the flag bearer of cinema laced with vulgarity in every shape, size, and form. After wreaking havoc on Indian cinema, he now seems determined to fracture society as well.

Rakul Preet Singh
“I Aspire to Be Like Bachchan Sir and Tabu Ma’am”
Rakul Preet Singh has carved a niche for herself in Indian cinema with her screen presence, fine performances, and choice of diverse roles across languages. From rom-coms to action dramas, she has showcased a wide acting range that keeps the audience engaged and directors coming back. Known for her discipline, charm, and girl-nextdoor relatability, Rakul is more than just a pretty face.
Coming from Delhi to being the ‘IT girl’ of Bollywood, the process has been seamless for the actor. But she doesn’t pay much heed to it. She said, “When I entered the industry, I didn't know what is the ‘IT girl’. I just wanted to be a heroine and be on the big screen. When I started, people said that five to six years is the shelf life of a girl in cinema
but things are changing. As long as you look good and work well, age is just a number. I want to aim at longevity, and I aspire to be like Amitabh Bachchan sir or Tabu ma'am.” "It comes from your childhood. If you are made to believe that you're good enough, then you believe that you're good enough. Never have I heard my parents say to me or my brother that ‘tumse nahin hoga’. They brought us up in a fearless and confident manner that for me, it has been ‘main apni favourite hoon, hamesha’.”
Her grounded approach and long-term vision reflect a refreshing mindset in an industry often obsessed with the fleeting. Rakul continues to break stereotypes and inspire a generation of young actors with her resilience and positive attitude. Recently, she shined in Mere Husband Ki Biwi. She is now gearing up for De De Pyaar De 2, the much-anticipated sequel to her hit rom-com, along with Ameeri, where she shares the screen with Neena Gupta. With multiple big-ticket projects lined up, Rakul Preet Singh is clearly in no hurry.
Eye Foundation of America Hosts Fundraising Gala in New York
Dr. Leela Raju highlighted the importance of awareness and early intervention in combating childhood blindness globally.
NEW ROCHELLE, NY- “Every child deserves to see the world with clarity and purpose. Let’s join hands to eradicate childhood blindness and unlock a brighter future for generations to come,” said Dr. Vadrevu K. Led by Dr. Surendra Sharma and Dr. Rachana Shukla, the gala raised funds to support EFA’s upcoming green hospital in India and outreach programs in Ghana and the Dominican Republic. “Retinopathy

India Launches Major Pomegranate Sea Export to United States
NEW YORK, NY— Move over mangoes — it’s pomegranate time! In a sweet milestone for Indian horticul-ture, the first full-scale sea shipment of 14 tons of “Bhagwa” pomegranates from Maharashtra has suc-cessfully arrived in New York, sparking excitement among farmers and fruit lovers alike. This marks a significant breakthrough in India-U.S. agri-trade relations. While Indian pomegranates have long reached markets in the Middle East and Europe, entering the U.S. via sea shipment was a challenge due to shelf-life concerns. Thanks to collaborative efforts by APEDA, USDA-APHIS, India’s NPPO, and the ICAR-National Research Centre for Pomegranate, this hurdle has now
been crossed. Known for its rich red color, sweet taste, and antioxidant power, the Bhagwa variety — named after the Sanskrit word for “radiant” — is now making waves in America. Following successful air-freight trials and shelf-life testing that proved a 60-day viability, this first maritime shipment of 4,620 boxes, handled by Kay Bee Exports, reached the U.S. in excellent condition after a five-week journey. Calling the achievement a “gamechanger,” APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev highlighted how sea shipments will lower logistics costs and open new markets. With growing U.S. demand for antioxidant-rich super-fruits, India’s pomegranates may soon share the global spotlight with mangoes and tea.
addressed the audience, spoke passionately about her person-al connection to the Foundation’s mission and her research on its life-changing work. With over four decades of service, the EFA has performed more than 340,000 surgeries, including 30,000+ on children, and served 2.5 million patients worldwide. Dr. Raju urged supporters to join the mission: “To-gether, let us illuminate young lives and create a world without childhood blindness.”

offset program, seizing tax re-funds and federal benefits from those in default. Wage garnishment will follow after a 30-day notice. Crit-ics, like the Student Borrower Protection Center, say this will hurt working families already struggling with economic instability.
NEW JERSEY — The U.S. Department of Education will resume collection on defaulted federal student loans starting May 5, impacting hundreds of thousands, including over 1.2 million borrowers in New Jersey. This move ends the pandemic-era pause that began under President Trump in 2020 and was extended through 2023 by President Biden. About 5.3 million borrowers are currently in default, with New Jersey holding $45.3 billion in federal student loan debt.
The department will begin involuntary collections through the Treasury’s
Education Secretary Linda McMahon defended the policy, criticizing Biden’s prior loan forgiveness actions and emphasizing a return to lawful repayment efforts. Confusion remains high due to shifting policies, un-derstaffing at Federal Student Aid, and ongoing legal challenges to incomedriven repayment plans.
Borrowers in default can enter loan rehabilitation to avoid wage garnishment, but it requires steady payments for nine months and can only be done once. Advocates urge compassion, noting that defaults often stem from financial hardship, not unwillingness to pay.

Rep. Krishnamoorthi Urges Hegseth to Resign Over Security Breach
SCHAUMBURG, IL – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi today reiterated his call for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to resign following alarming new revelations that Hegseth shared sensitive military strike infor-mation — including flight schedules for combat aircraft — in a private Signal chat with his wife, brother, and personal attorney. “Once again, Secretary Hegseth has endangered American service members by recklessly transmitting op-erational details through insecure channels,” said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. “This latest report — re-vealing he shared real-time strike information with family members — is an egregious breach of security and trust.”
Krishnamoorthi emphasized that Hegseth’s repeated disregard for national security protocols puts lives at risk and undermines public confidence.

Raghuram Rajan Confronts Powell on Fed Autonomy, Drawing Trump’s Ire Once Again
Powell, addressing a crowd already unnerved by inflation and economic slowdowns, affirmed the Fed’s autonomy, stating, “We’re never going to be influenced by any political pressure.”
CHICAGO, IL — At the Economic Club of Chicago on April 16, Raghuram Rajan, former Reserve Bank of India governor and University of Chicago professor, asked a pointed question to Federal Reserve Chair Je-rome Powell: “Should one worry about threats to the Fed’s independence once you’re gone?” The query struck a chord amid mounting economic uncertainty and political pressure.
Powell, addressing a crowd already unnerved by inflation and economic slowdowns, affirmed the Fed’s autonomy, stating, “We’re never going to
Alaska University Flags Surprise Visa Cancellations
FAIRBANKS, AK- The federal government has revoked the visas of four international students affiliated with the University of Alaska Anchorage— one current student and three recent graduates—without explanation or prior notice, university officials confirmed Monday. UA President Pat Pitney informed the community via email, emphasizing that the decision was unexpected and that no students from the University of Alaska Fairbanks or Southeast were affected. The university is monitoring immigration records daily and offering support to impacted individuals.
“These immigration issues do not affect a student’s academic standing,” Pitney stated, affirming continued support for international students. However, the visa cancellations, which lacked justification, have raised serious concerns. Immigration attorney Nicholas Olano questioned whether proper notice and legal pro-cedures are being followed, calling the actions “extreme.”
Nationwide, over 1,000 student visas have been revoked, with many tied to students’ involvement in peaceful protests related to the Israel-Hamas war. Critics argue these actions infringe upon First Amend-ment rights. A Trump-era executive order targeting antisemitism has led to increased visa scrutiny, includ-ing monitoring social media.
Olano urged affected students to seek legal counsel, warning of chilling effects on free speech and Alas-ka’s economy. He noted international students’ economic contributions, saying the state stands to lose both talent and funding.

described as “larger than expected” and historically unprecedented. The comments spurred a selloff and heightened recession fears.
A day later, Trump escalated tensions, calling for Powell’s removal and criticizing his speech as “another, and typical, complete mess!”
The conflict highlights broader concerns over political encroachment on independent agencies. With Fed officials labeling the tariffs as an economic “shock,” a Reuters poll now places recession odds at 45%, un-derscoring the fragile outlook as inflation rises and growth slows.
Attorney Rina Gandhi Takes on Trump Over Wrongful Deportation
NEW YORK, NY – Rina Gandhi, senior partner at Murray Osorio PLLC, is leading a major legal battle to bring home Kilmar Ábrego García, a Maryland father unlawfully deported to El Salvador. The case has become a flashpoint in the ongoing reckoning with Trump-era immigration policies, especially after U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis rebuked the government for doing “nothing” to comply with court orders. Gandhi echoed that frustration, stating, “This is about the government admitting to unlawfully removing a man from his home, his children — and then doing absolutely nothing to fix it.” A seasoned immigration attorney, Gandhi heads the Maryland office of her firm, where she manages com-plex family-based and humanitarian immigration cases. Her dedication to immigrant rights is rooted in years of work with refugee resettlement agencies and legal aid groups before earning her law degree from William & Mary in 2014. She also teaches gender-based asylum law at Georgetown University and actively shapes national immi-gration policy through her leadership in the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Internationally, her advocacy has extended to human rights work in Africa. With the Ábrego García case, Gandhi remains relentless — demanding accountability and insisting, “Justice means more than a ruling — it means action.”

Documentary on Ravish Kumar wins $100,000 at the at the Harvard Kennedy School
Award-winning filmmaker Vinay Shukla’s While We Watched, a newsroom drama featuring Indian journalist Ravish Kumar has won the top honour - the Grand Prize at the inaugural Henry Awards for Public Interest Documentary by The Documentary Film in the Public Interest Initiative at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy.
Directed by Vinay Shukla, While We Watched is a timely depiction of a newsroom in crisis, and follows journalist Ravish Kumar for two years as he battles a barrage of fake news, falling ratings and the resulting cutbacks.
The Henry Awards recognize nonfiction films that advance public understanding of the critical issues of our time while demonstrating outstanding cinematic achievement. The Henry Awards are intended to honor and encourage a documentary filmmaking practice
grounded in its essential role to a thriving society and focused on the public good. Starting with the 2025 Henry Awards, a grand prize of $100,000 is awarded annually, along with four finalists, each receiving a prize of $25,000.
The 2025 Henry Awards Jury comprising Ra’anan Alexandrowicz, Mandy Chang, Petra Costa, Ron Nixon and Michèle Stephenson released the following statement about the winner of Grand Prize— While we Watched is an exceptional cautionary tale that takes an unflinching look at the State's violent crackdown on freedom of expression through the experience of a journalist who dares to defend his integrity. Ravish Kumar is an unforgettable character. His specific story manages to instantly transcend its locality and become a real time documentation of the attack against the free press. The film is a brave effort by the filmmakers that should serve as a warning to us all.”
Sharing his joy Vinay Shukla says, “It’s an incredible honour to receive the Henry Grand Prize — especially from an institution like Harvard, which has long stood for intellectual rigour, public service, and the pursuit of truth. While We Watched is a deeply personal film — not just about one journalist, but about what it means to hold on to your values when everything around you is shifting. We made this film against impossible odds: with no money, partners dropping out mid-production, and constant uncertainty about its future. To see it capture the zeitgeist the way it has over the past few years has been truly heartening. The film premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in 2022, and here I am in 2025 - still accepting awards for it. The prize money is the same as Kaun Banega Crorepati, so honestly, I feel like I’ve just won KBC - which is quite something, considering I wasn’t the smart sibling.”

DHS to Begin Screening Aliens’ Social Media Activity for Antisemitism
WASHINGTON, DC-U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will now consider antisemitic activi-ty— such as social media posts or physical harassment of Jewish individuals—as grounds for denying immi-gration benefits. This policy applies to applicants for lawful permanent residency, foreign students, and individuals affiliated with educational institutions involved in antisemitic actions.
This move aligns with several executive orders from President Trump, including those focused on combat-ing antisemitism and protecting the U.S. from foreign terrorists. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has emphasized that it will fully enforce immigration laws to prevent extremists and supporters of antisemitic terrorist
groups—such as Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, or the Houthis—from entering or remaining in the country.
“There is no room in the United States for the world’s terrorist sympathizers,” said DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin. “Anyone who thinks they can come here and hide behind the First Amendment to promote antisemitic violence—think again. You are not welcome here.”
Effective immediately, USCIS will treat online content endorsing or promoting antisemitic terrorism or related ideologies as a negative factor in evaluating immigration requests. This guidance represents a firm stance on national security and the rejection of hate-fueled extremism.
Prince George’s County Bank Customers Lose $100,000 in Fraud Targeting Top U.S. Banks
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MDPolice in Prince George’s County, Maryland — a suburb outside Washington, D.C. — report that residents have lost approximately $100,000 this year due to sophisticated bank impostor scams. Victims targeted are customers of major financial institutions, including Wells Fargo, Bank of America, PNC, and others. According to NBC4 Washington, scammers are posing as representatives from these banks, sending text messages that warn of suspicious account activity. The messages prompt recipients to respond or call a fraudulent number, under the guise of account protection.
Once in contact, the scammers instruct victims to withdraw cash or purchase gift cards and deposit the funds into designated ATMs, falsely claiming this step is necessary to “secure” their accounts. In reality, these transactions

result in immediate theft of the victim’s funds. Authorities urge residents to take precautions: Never respond directly to unsolicited messages or calls about account activity. Contact your bank using the official number listed on your debit or credit card.
Visit a bank branch in person if you’re concerned.
Hang up immediately if someone pressures you to transfer or withdraw funds.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that such scams are becoming increasingly common. In 2024 alone, Americans reported $470 million in losses from similar frauds — including impersonation, fake package delivery notices, bogus job offers, and “wrong number” ploys. That figure is five times higher than in 2020, even as the total number of scam reports has decreased. To combat text-based scams, the FTC recommends forwarding suspicious messages to 7726 (SPAM), a free reporting service.

New Policy Allows Judges to Dismiss Asylum Claims Without Hearings
HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHINGTON, DC-The Trump administration is moving to fast-track immigration cases by allowing judges to dismiss “legally deficient” asylum applications without holding hearings. A new directive, outlined in an April 11 memo from the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), permits judges to reject asylum claims based solely on the written application, skipping what is typically a lengthy and complex hearing process. The memo comes amid efforts to increase deportations and reduce the court system’s backlog, which recently surpassed 4 million cases, including 1.5 million asylum claims. Critics warn the policy could harm asylum seekers who lack legal representation and struggle to complete detailed applications due to language barriers and limited knowledge of U.S. law.

Newsom Courts Canadians with New ‘California Love’ Campaign
SACRAMENTO, CA — In a bid to revive slumping Canadian tourism, California Governor Gavin Newsom has launched a bold new campaign with Visit California, aimed squarely at the northern neighbor. Unveiled on April 14, the “California Love” campaign seeks to remind Canadians that California remains an inviting, diverse, and sunny escape — far removed from the political noise in Washington, D.C.
In a lighthearted ad, Newsom quips, “Don’t let D.C. ruin your beach plans. California is over 2,000 miles away — and a world apart in mindset.” The campaign comes in response to a 12% dip in Canadian visitors in February, the first major decline since the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, 1.8 million Canadian tourists injected $3.72 billion into California’s economy.
