Ms Kewalramani has also been honoured with several awards, including the International Institute of New England's Golden Door Award and the Hope Visionary Award. She was also named one of Boston Business Journal's Power 50 in 2019 and a New Englander of the Year by the New England Council in 2021.
In a recent interview, former U.S. President Donald Trump made a bold claim that his new tariff policy could generate such significant revenue for the United States that Americans may no longer need to pay income tax.
Trump’s Historical Reference and Vision
Citing the late 1800s, Trump said that during that period, the U.S. relied solely on tariffs for national revenue and was one of the wealthiest countries in the world. He suggested that a similar opportunity exists today, arguing that the country could earn enough through tariffs to eliminate the need for income tax.
“This is a unique chance for America to return to a revenue system that doesn’t burden its citizens with income tax,” Trump said. “We can earn so much from tariffs that income tax becomes unnecessary.” Tax Policy Under Congressional Authority It is important to note that any changes to the federal income tax system must be approved by
California becomes first state to sue over Trump tariffs
California Governor Gavin Newsom has filed a lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump's spate of tariffs that have upended global trade.
The suit, which marks the first time a state has sued over the levies, challenges an emergency power Trump cited giving him authority to enact them. California is the world's fifth largest economy - outpacing every US state and most countries - and is home to the largest shares of manufacturing and agricultural production in the US.
The White House, which has argued the tariffs are tackling imbalances in international trade, dismissed the lawsuit and said it would continue addressing "this national emergency that's decimating America's industries".
Shein and Temu warn tariffs will raise prices in US
Chinese online retail giants Shein and Temu have warned US customers that goods will get pricier from next week, after President Donald Trump imposed hefty tariffs on goods from China.
In almost identical statements, the rival companies said they have seen operating expenses rise "due to recent changes in global trade rules and tariffs", adding they will make "price adjustments" from 25 April. The shopping sites have gained tens of millions of customers in the US, attracted by their ultra-low prices. Their popularity has put pressure on Amazon, prompting it to launch a new platform called Haul last November, featuring items for under $20 (£15.10).
the U.S. Congress, which holds exclusive authority over tax legislation. Trump acknowledged this but emphasized that revenue from tariffs could be used to phase out taxes on tips and Social Security, as well as fulfill other campaign promises.
Historical Context and Revenue Claims
Trump referenced a committee formed in the 1880s that was tasked with managing tariff revenue. He criticized the introduction of the income tax system in 1913, claiming it undermined the tariff-based model. According to Trump, an attempt was made in 1931–32 to reintroduce tariffs, but it was too late, as the Great Depression had already taken hold. Responding to a question on revenue, Trump claimed that during his presidency, the U.S. earned between $2–3 billion daily through tariffs—a figure he said was unprecedented. “We were making hundreds of billions annually. I've paused it for now due to the transition, but some flexibility is necessary,” he added.
Who Is Krish Lal Isserdasani? Indian Student
Whose U.S. Deportation Was Halted
Krish Lal Isserdasani, a 21-year-old Indian student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, secured a major legal victory after a U.S. federal judge blocked his deportation and reinstated his student visa. Isserdasani, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, was weeks away from graduation when his F-1 visa was abruptly revoked on April 4, following a prior arrest for misdemeanor disorderly conduct in November 2024. He was not convicted in the case.
The court order, issued on April 15, prevented the Department of Homeland Security from detaining or deporting Isserdasani, citing lack of due process. U.S. District Judge William Conley criticized the administration’s actions, noting that the student was given no warning, no explanation, and no opportunity to defend himself before his SEVIS record was terminated.
The case highlights a broader crackdown on international students under President Trump’s renewed immigration policies, which have reportedly led to over 1,300 visa revocations. Isserdasani was among 26 affected students at UW–Madison.
His attorney, Shabnam Lotfi, called the ruling a landmark win for international students. A preliminary injunction hearing is scheduled for April 28. The case raises concerns over racial profiling and the targeting of students for minor or unproven offenses.

Indian student Chinmay Deore, along with three international students from China and Nepal, has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and immigration officials, claiming their student immigration status was unlawfully terminated without proper notice or explanation.
The lawsuit, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan, names Deore, Xiangyun Bu and Qiuyi Yang from China, and Yogesh Joshi from Nepal as plaintiffs.
They allege that their records in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) were abruptly terminated, jeopardizing their education, careers, and legal residency in the U.S.
Deore, a 21-year-old computer science student at Wayne State University, first entered the U.S. in 2004 on an H-4 dependent visa.
After leaving in 2008, he returned in 2014. He enrolled at Wayne State in 2021 and transitioned to F-1 student
Tariffs will hit US economy and raise prices, Fed boss warns
US economic growth will be hit and prices will rise for consumers as a result of new tariffs on goods entering the country, the head of America's central bank has warned.
Jerome Powell, chair of the Federal Reserve, said the import taxes recently announced by President Donald Trump were larger than the bank had expected, going beyond the higher end of its estimates.
His comments followed a period of turmoil on global stock markets as investors reacted to trade tariffs coming into force and the escalating trade war between the US and China. Powell said surveys of households and businesses reported a "sharp decline" in their sentiment over the economic outlook, largely due to tariff concerns.
Trump, Yunus Among Top; No Indian in TIME's
Influential Leaders List
From US president Donald Trump to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2025 list included some of the most prominent names from around the world. However, no Indian featured on the Time Magazine's list this year, a surprising miss considering past appearances. In 2024, Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt and Olympian wrestler Sakshi Malik were among the few Indians that featured on the list. The magazine's annual list is divided into several categories like 'Leaders', 'Icons' and 'Titans', among others. The 'Leaders' list however does include Reshma Kewalramani this year, the Indian-Origin CEO of Vertex Pharmaceuticals. She immigrated from India at age 11 and went on to become the first woman CEO of a large, public US biotechnology company.
The 21-year-old undergraduate student at Wayne State University has been studying computer science there since August 2021.
status in 2022. He was on track to graduate in May 2025 and had planned to pursue Optional Practical Training (OPT) post-graduation. On April 4, Wayne State informed Deore that his SEVIS record was terminated for “otherwise failing to maintain status,” citing a criminal records check or visa revocation. However, Deore has no criminal or immigration violations, aside from minor traffic infractions.
The lawsuit states this sudden termination has caused him to lose his OPT opportunity and a position he legally held for income. It also threatens his future educational plans and may lead to deportation, separating him from his legally residing family in Michigan.
The suit seeks reinstatement of the students’ F-1 statuses so they can complete their studies and avoid detention or deportation. The other plaintiffs are graduate and Ph.D. students at the University of Michigan and Wayne State, also facing similar disruptions to their academic and personal lives.

Indian Employees, Mostly Telugu, Fired by Fannie Mae for Fraud
Mortgage company Fannie Mae, headquartered in Washington D.C. recently laid-off 200 of their employees. In a blow to the Indian community, these employees are of Indian-origin and particularly from the Telugu community in India. The 200 employees have been fired on "ethical grounds.”
The alleged ethical violations are in relation to misuse of Fannie Mae's matching grants program. The program provides compensation to what the employees donate under the matching gift program.
According to the allegations the employees who have been sacked collaborated with certain nonprofit organizations and created falsified donations. By doing so they then exploited the program and got dishonest access to company funds.
Many of those who were accused reportedly colluded with the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) and deceived the company. It may be noted that one of the laid off employees was holding the position of regional vice president at TANA. Another employee is the spouse of a former president of the American Telugu Association (ATA).
Indian-American Congressman Suhas Subramanyam from Virginia has sought a response from Fannie Mae. He said, "It has been brought to my attention that Fannie Mae has accused hundreds of my constituents in the Indian-American community of fraudulent behavior and fired them without conducting a full investigation or providing evidence.” He added, “I have spoken with many of these employees in our community, and they deserve due process. Fannie Mae owes them, Congress, and the American people an explanation immediately.”

BOSTON, MA – Anurag Bajpayee, CEO of global water tech company
Gradiant and a celebrated leader in climate innovation, has been arrested in connection with an alleged highend brothel and sex trafficking network. The investigation, spanning Cambridge, Watertown, and the Washington, D.C. suburbs, involves luxury apartment-based brothels and dozens of clients, including doctors, lawyers, and Cambridge city councillor Paul Toner. Authorities allege the network exploited primarily Asian women under the guise of an escort service offer-ing a “girlfriend experience.”
Bajpayee’s arrest has sent shockwaves through the tech world, where he was known for pioneering sustainable water treatment technologies.
Originally from Lucknow, Bajpayee studied at La Martiniere College, earned an engineering degree from the University of Missouri, and completed his master’s and Ph.D. at MIT. New Georgia Bill Aims to Include Hinduphobia in Hate Crime Framework
HiIndia Newsdesk
ATLANTA, GA – Georgia has made history by becoming the first U.S. state to introduce legislation specifically targeting Hinduphobia. Senate Bill 375, if enacted, would require government agencies and law enforcement to consider anti-Hindu bias when investigating cases of discrimination based on race, color, reli-gion, or national origin. The bill also empowers courts to take Hinduphobia into account when determining whether victims were deliberately targeted in criminal cases. Advocacy organizations such as the Coalition of Hindus in North America (CoHNA) and the Hindus of Geor-gia PAC have hailed the bill as a groundbreaking step toward safeguarding Hindu Americans. This follows Georgia’s 2023 resolution condemning discrimination against Hindus—making it the first state to officially recognize such bias.
According to a 2023–24 Pew Research Center study, Hindus constitute about 0.9% of the U.S. population, roughly
2.5 million people. At the same time, Hindu-American groups are voicing concern over California’s Senate Bill 509. Introduced
by Senator Anna Caballero, the bill is designed to help law enforcement counter “transnational repres-sion,” or foreign influence in diaspora
communities. Critics, however, warn that the bill’s broad language could inadvertently impact Hindu individuals and organizations.

Talwani Blocks TrumpEra Deportation Order
An Indian-American judge is behind a recent stay order that provides immediate relief to over 500,000 immigrants. Judge Indira Talwani recently blocked the deportation of immigrants hailing from Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti and Nicaragua. It is worth noting that all these individuals entered the US legally under a Bidenera humanitarian parole programme that granted them two-year work permits.
The deportation would have gone into effect on April 24 but has currently been prevented so that the courts can examine the administration’s legal justification. Talwani put the question as to why people who had passed background checks, paid for travel and received sponsor support were being treated as if they entered the U.S. illegally. She also said that the administration failed to provide a reasoned decision.
U.S. Warns of 245% Tariff on Chinese Imports
Until now tit-for-tat tariff exchanges had seen the US levy a 145 per cent tax on Chinese imports and China slap a 125 per cent duty on American goods.
New Delhi:
China now faces tariffs of 245 per cent on import of goods into the United States "as a result of its retaliatory actions", the White House said Tuesday afternoon (India time) as the trade war between the two countries
appears to run further and further off road. The announcement came as President Donald Trump authorised an investigation into "national security risks posed by the US' reliance on imported, processed critical minerals and derived products", which includes cobalt, lithium, and nickel, and rareearth metals used to manufacture smartphones and batteries (for electric vehicles), as well as military equipment.
Trump's order points out the US is "dependent on foreign sources... that are at risk of serious, sustained, and long-term supply chain shocks". This dependence, the White House said, "raises potential for risks to national security, technological growth, and economic prosperity".
Until now tit-for-tat tariff exchanges had seen the US levy a 145 per cent tax on Chinese imports and China slap a 125 per cent duty on American goods. Beijing has also banned the export of certain goods, including those used by aerospace manufacturers and military contractors.
Tragic Plane Crash in New York Claims Six Lives, Including Indian-Origin Surgeon and Family
Adevastating aircraft accident in upstate New York has resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including renowned Indianorigin surgeon Dr. Joy Saini, her neurosurgeon husband, their two adult children, and their children's partners.
The crash happened on Saturday while the family was en route to the Catskills to celebrate Passover.
The aircraft, a twin-engine Mitsubishi MU-2B, went down around noon in a muddy field in Copake, near the Massachusetts state line. The group had departed from Westchester County Airport and was headed for Columbia County Airport when the plane crashed approximately 10 miles from its destination.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the pilot—Dr. Michael Groff, Dr. Saini’s husband—had radioed air traffic control stating he missed his approach and was awaiting new landing instructions. Despite three low-altitude alerts from controllers, no
response or distress call followed. The NTSB's Todd Inman said footage showed the aircraft intact moments before impact, but descending rapidly. The wreckage was discovered heavily damaged and embedded in the soil. Investigators are currently exploring whether adverse weather and limited visibility were contributing factors.
9 MIT Students, Researchers Denied Visas Under Trump Crackdown
At least nine MIT students, researchers, and recent graduates had their visas and immigration statuses unexpectedly revoked, MIT President Sally Kornbluth revealed in an April 14 email. The revocations, starting April 4, were made without prior notice or explanation. One affected individual has filed a lawsuit against the federal government, though MIT is not involved. Kornbluth expressed concern that the move could discourage global talent and harm U.S. scientific leadership. The action is seen as part of a broader Trump-era immigration crackdown, particularly targeting international
scholars and activists. This issue extends beyond MIT, with CBS News reporting that nearly 530 individuals across 88 U.S. universities have faced visa revocations. Universities like Harvard and Stanford have also reported disruptions due to increasingly strict immigration policies.
Separately, MIT, along with top institutions like Princeton, Caltech, and the University of Illinois, is suing the Department of Energy over a policy capping reimbursements for indirect research costs at 15%. The change could cut over $400 million in annual funding, impacting critical research areas like cybersecurity.
The plane had been recently upgraded to meet FAA compliance and was flying under instrument flight rules. Originally from Punjab, India, Dr. Joy Saini moved to the U.S. with her parents, Gurdev and Kuljit Singh. She pursued her medical education at the University of Pittsburgh, where she met her husband, Dr. Groff. Dr. Saini became a specialist in urogynecology and pelvic surgery, and founded the Boston Pelvic Health and Wellness clinic. Also lost in the crash were the couple's daughter, Karenna Groff—a standout soccer player at MIT and 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year; their son Jared Groff, a Swarthmore College graduate working as a paralegal; Jared’s partner, Alexia Couyutas Duarte, also a Swarthmore alum with plans to attend Harvard Law School; and James Santoro, Karenna’s partner and recent graduate from MIT. Dr. Saini and Dr. Groff are survived by their younger daughter, Anika Groff, Michael’s parents Stephen and Gebena Groff, Joy’s mother Kuljit Singh, and siblings Rinne Groff, Yram Groff, and Prashant Saini, as well as an extended circle of grieving family members.

Washington – Marrying a U.S. citizen or green card holder is no longer a straightforward path to permanent residency, as the Trump administration tightens immigration rules. A significant shift from the Biden era, the new policy brings heightened scrutiny to marriagebased green card applications. While interviews have always been part of the green card process, officials are now conducting more intense vetting. According to the Times of India, applicants are being asked for detailed documents on personal aspects of their relationships—ranging from how couples met to knowledge of each other’s sleeping habits and allergies. Immigration attorney Ashwin Sharma noted a growing number of requests for evidence (RFEs) and longer interview procedures. “Officers are leaning more into their discretion than during the Biden years,” he said. For spouses residing outside the U.S., interviews take place at consulates, with U.S. citizen spouses barred from attending. For those already in the U.S., such as on H-1B visas, interviews are conducted by USCIS. In both cases, the burden of proof lies heavily on documentation.
Immigration experts advise couples to provide extensive evidence: joint financial records, call logs, photos, travel documents, and even life insurance policies. Snehal Batra, managing attorney at NPZ Law Group, warned that denied applications over suspected fraud could result in deportation. Under Biden, some policies were eased to simplify the process for undocumented spouses, but did not expand eligibility. Now, immigration lawyers expect the Trump administration’s stricter approach to soon become official policy.

In March 2025, she transitioned to her new role focused on team development and fostering inclusive workplace culture—an effort JPL Director Laurie Leshin called “essential for our future success.” Her removal comes amid a broader rollback of DEI efforts in government institutions, reigniting debates about the role of equity in federal agencies.
Harvard's $2.2B Funding Frozen Over Trump Dispute
New York, United States – The Trump administration has frozen $2.2 billion in federal funding to Harvard University after the school refused sweeping government demands aimed at curbing campus anti-Semitism. The demands included shutting diversity offices, auditing student and faculty views, and cooperating with immigration authorities.
Harvard President Alan Garber rejected the demands, declaring the university would not compromise its independence or constitutional rights. In response, Trump’s Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism announced the suspension of multi-year grants and $60 million in contracts, criticizing Harvard's “entitlement mindset.”
This follows nationwide scrutiny of elite campuses over anti-Israel protests sparked by the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. The Department of Education is investigating 60 universities for alleged anti-Semitic harassment. Unlike Columbia University—which accepted reforms after losing $400 million in grants— Harvard has taken a defiant stance. Immigration authorities are also targeting student protest organizers, including the arrest of Mohsen Mahdawi.
Garber emphasized that no government should dictate academic policies at private institutions. Meanwhile, Rep. Elise Stefanik called for Harvard to be fully defunded, labeling it a symbol of “academic rot” and “raging antiSemitism.” Harvard reported a $6.5 billion revenue and $45 million surplus last year.

May 2025 US Visa Bulletin Delays Indian Immigrants’ Hopes
Visa retrogression occurs when more people apply for a visa in a particular category or country than there are visas available for that month.
The May 2025 U.S. Visa Bulletin has brought disappointing news for Indian immigrants, especially those in the H-1B and green card categories. The EB-5 Unreserved category for Indians retrogressed by over six months, moving back to May 1, 2019, due to high demand and visa number usage. In contrast, China remains at January 22, 2014 for the same category.
Key updates from the Visa Bulletin:
• EB-1 (First Preference) for India stays at February 2, 2022, with no changes for other countries.
• EB-2 (Second Preference) for India remains at January 1, 2013, and for China at October 1, 2020.
• EB-3 (Third Preference) for India advances by two weeks to April 15, 2013.
• EB-3 Other Workers for India matches the EB-3 cutoff date at April 15, 2013.
The bulletin also indicates retrogression, a phenomenon where visa demand exceeds availability, delaying green card approvals. These retrogressions reflect the ongoing impact of Trump's immigration policies, which focus on limiting immigration, particularly affecting skilled worker visas.
The total annual limits for family-sponsored and employment-based immigrants remain at 226,000 and 140,000 respectively, with per-country limits set at 25,620.

BRIEF NEWS
Over 6,000 Immigrants Listed as Dead in US to Push Self-Deportation
The immigrants targeted by this policy were allowed to enter and remain in the US temporarily under programs introduced by former President Joe Biden.
The Trump administration has falsely classified over 6,000 living immigrants as deceased, canceling their Social Security numbers to block access to jobs, benefits, and financial services. The move aims to pressure them into "self-deporting." Names and SSNs were added to a federal database used to track the dead, according to anonymous sources. This is part of a broader crackdown on immigrants allowed to stay under Biden-era programs.
The move has sparked concern among immigrant communities and advocacy groups, who warn it could lead to financial ruin, legal limbo, and increased fear among vulnerable populations.

Why Indian Students See US As Top Choice For STEM Despite Visa Troubles
The United States has increased the level of challenges for Indian students due to stricter immigration policies.
As reports from American universities revoking student visas float around, the announcement by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) regarding screening of visa applicants' social media adds another layer of fresh concern for the students and their families.
However, these stumbling blocks do not hamper Indian students' interest in US higher education, especially in fields such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programmes and developing fields such as artificial intelligence (AI). This is because the US has an unparalleled advanced research environment, exposure around the world, work opportunities after studies and access to cutting-edge industries,
per experts.
“There has been an almost 2x increase in the many applied-AI programmes that universities have launched in the last two years. Traditional STEM programmes also remain relevant, with computer science, data science, and engineering in strong positions. All of these align well with employment opportunities. Business programmes with strong analytics or tech integration are also in demand,” Akshay Chaturvedi, founder and CEO of Leverage Edu, told
the Times Of India.
In fact, the enrollment of students in US institutions was up 23 per cent in 2023-2024 as compared to the previous year. However, 2025 brings with itself uncertainties due to the ever-changing US immigration policy.
“Students are asking more questions than before about immigration policies, job prospects, and the broader political climate. The US is still seen as a top destination, but there's a growing need for clarity around long-term pathways,” Chaturvedi added.
Students are, however, more cautious about navigating the visa process, experts say. They are also keeping alternative countries as backup plans. According to Mr Kumar, although there's a dip in interest this year due to the stringent immigration policies, the demand will catch up in the coming months.

On Friday, he wrote on social media: "Russia has to get moving. Too many people ere [sic] DYING, thousands a week, in a terrible and senseless war."
It comes as Trump's Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg denied suggesting the country could be partitioned.

Indian-American Politician Charged in Gambling Ring
New York: Anand Shah, a 42-year-old Indian-origin municipal councillor in Prospect Park, New Jersey, has been charged in a mafia-linked illegal gambling operation, according to Attorney General Matthew Platkin. Shah was among 39 people charged with racketeering, illegal gambling, and money laundering. Authorities allege he managed underground poker games and an online sportsbook tied to the Lucchese Crime Family, a notorious Italian-American mafia group.
The $3 million operation ran from social clubs and behind businesses like restaurants, involving poker, sports
betting, and gambling machines. Raids were conducted at 12 locations, including four poker clubs.
Also charged was Samir S. Nadkarni, 48, from Florida, described as a "sportsbook sub-agent and poker host." Shah, serving his second term and overseeing finance and economic development, was seen as a rising political figure. His arrest, Platkin said, worsens public distrust in elected officials.
Platkin added that organized crime, despite its portrayal in media, is rooted in “money, control, and the threat of violence.”

India Races U.S. Tariff Deadline for 'Lifetime' Opportunity
With just 90 days left before U.S. tariffs resume, India is scrambling to finalize a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) with Washington. The pause, announced by President Trump amid rising U.S.-China trade tensions, is seen by India as a “lifetime” opportunity to strengthen economic ties and position itself as a reliable alternative to China. Negotiations, which began shortly
after Trump’s inauguration, have accelerated, with Indian officials aiming to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. Key sectors include electronics, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and auto parts. While India seeks to roll back U.S. tariffs on its exports, Washington wants duty-free access to goods like apples, whiskey, and GM soybeans—still a sensitive topic for India. The proposed “zero-for-zero” deal could eliminate tariffs on 90% of industrial goods, echoing India’s trade strategy with the EU. India is cautious, balancing export ambitions with domestic concerns in agriculture and manufacturing. The U.S., meanwhile, is
eager to secure alternative sourcing as its trade war with China intensifies, with China imposing a 125% tariff on U.S. goods.
India is also close to clinching trade deals with the UK and EU. Talks with the UK are 90% complete, while discussions with the EU aim to wrap up by 2025, focusing on challenges like carbon border taxes and deforestation rules. As global trade dynamics shift, India is leveraging its manufacturing push and strategic position to secure long-term market access and boost exports, reinforcing its role as a key U.S. and global partner.

Is Tulsi Gabbard’s Task Force DIG Going After Trump Critics?
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard
Warner criticized the lack of transparency, stating Gabbard’s office failed to brief him about the Director’s Initiative Group (DIG), breaking from standard protocol followed by her predecessors.
Newsdesk
WASHINGTON, DC
–Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee, raised concerns on April 10 about a task force created by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, calling it a potential “witch hunt” targeting intelligence officials perceived as disloyal to former President Donald Trump. Warner criticized the lack of transparency, stating Gabbard’s office failed to brief him about the Director’s Initiative Group (DIG), breaking from standard protocol followed by her predecessors.
DIG, publicly announced by Gabbard on April 8, has reportedly been active since January, according to Reuters. Gabbard described the task force as focused on investigating politicization within intelligence agencies, unauthorized leaks, and declassifying materials of public interest. She emphasized these goals in a Fox News interview and during a cabinet meeting on April 10.
Critics, including Warner, argue that DIG could further undermine national security. Trump has long vowed to overhaul U.S. intelligence agencies, accusing them of being weaponized against him.
Gabbard also revealed that DIG is preparing to release files on the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy and is reviewing the “Russia collusion hoax”—a term Trump uses to dispute intelli-gence findings about Moscow’s interference in the 2016 election.
Usha Vance Addresses AntiIndian Sentiment, Botox Culture, and Finding Normalcy
WASHINGTON, DC – Second Lady Usha Vance recently opened up about the racism she and her family have endured, especially in light of online hate targeting Indian Americans. After her husband, JD Vance, was nominated for vice president, backlash erupted online, prompting him to respond publicly. In an interview with The Free Press, Usha criticized the rhetoric, saying, “I think it’s terrible” when people talk about “normalizing Indian hate.” The controversy included ex-DOGE staffer Marko Elez, who had posted that very phrase. Although Elez was fired, JD Vance’s openness to rehiring him drew backlash from figures like Rep. Ro Khanna.
Usha said she hadn’t followed all the online discourse, but emphasized her and JD’s deep concern about their children’s well-being amidst political chaos. Despite being the first Hindu Second Lady, she shared that her public reception has been largely positive. Reflecting on her background and identity, Usha—who was raised in an academic family, works as a lawyer, and is a mother of three—stressed the importance of staying grounded.

Sadhu Vaswani
Center Breaks Ground in NJ
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – In a spiritually charged moment on the sacred day of Ram Navami, more than 200 devotees gathered to witness the groundbreaking ceremony for the upcoming Sadhu Vaswani Center for World Peace. The center, envisioned as a sanctuary for peace and spiritual learning, is inspired by the teachings of Rev. Dada J.P. Vaswani and will serve as a beacon of hope and harmony in the Western world. The event was led by Didi Krishna Kumari, spiritual head of the Sadhu Vaswani Mission, who deliberately chose Ram Navami—a day symbolizing divine birth—for this significant milestone. She announced that the center will also include a memorial shrine dedicated to both Sadhu T.L. Vaswani and Dada J.P. Vaswani, honoring their legacy and timeless message of love and peace. The ceremony opened with a stirring performance of the World Peace Song, composed and led by Mohit Budhwani, accompanied by young voices from the Sadhu Vaswani Gurukul. Their heartfelt rendition captured the spirit of the day and the mission’s commitment to nurturing peace through future generations.
As part of a longstanding tradition, a sacred text was opened for divine guidance. This time, the chosen reading came from Anjali Sangrah, a collection of Dada’s spiritual poetry. The moving lines, read by long-time devotee Nirmal Mirchandani, brought tears to many:
"Do you know who’s coming? The embodiment of Love is opening the doors of hearts… He lights the inner flame, and ignites the eternal light!" These words echoed a powerful promise Dada once made: “When you no longer find me in Poona, look for me here.”
The ceremony drew participants of all ages, united by faith and devotion. Slated for completion in 18 months, the center will include a Gurukul for children, prayer and meditation halls, a spiritual library, wellness spaces, and a Peace Park featuring lotus-shaped meditation pods and reflection pools.
The East Brunswick project is an extension of the Sadhu Vaswani Mission, headquartered in Pune, India, and joins a global family of over 70 centers dedicated to spreading light, service, and compassion under Didi Krishna’s guidance.

WASHNGTON, DC-
In a sweeping move by the Trump administration, over 500 international stu-dents—many from Ivy League and top U.S. universities—have had their F-1 student visas revoked. The af-fected students, including several from Harvard, Stanford, and the University of California system, were instructed to selfdeport using the CBP Home App, with many receiving no prior notice or opportunity to appeal. The cancellations, reportedly linked to minor legal issues, immigration status lapses, or even social media activity and protest involvement, have triggered shockwaves through the global academic commu-nity.

WASHINGTON, DC — The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), a community advocacy group, issued a measured response following the U.S. Senate’s confirmation of Harmeet Kaur Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. Dhillon’s ap-pointment marks a historic first, as she becomes the first

The organization had previously addressed concerns from the Sikh American community after Dhillon’s nomination in December 2024. While SALDEF recognized her early civil rights work, particularly post-9/11, it also voiced reservations about aspects of her recent record.
In its updated statement, SALDEF emphasized that civil rights leadership must be rooted in the defense of all communities, free from partisan influence. As Dhillon assumes her new role, SALDEF reiterated its commitment to advocating for equity, justice, and the protection of civil rights for all Americans.

Edison, NJ Mayoral Candidate Lav Patel Triumphs in Courtroom Showdown
HiIndia Newsdesk
In a dramatic set of events, Lav Patel’s mayoral campaign gets courtroom green light. In what has been described by supporters as a major win for truth and transparency, the Superior Court of New Jersey, Middlesex County denied a request to put a halt to the Democratic Primary Election process for Edison township.
Mayoral candidate Lav Patel along with his council mates – Jayesh Mehta, Ingrid Chen and Anthnoy DeAmorin would have their names on the ballot for the primary elections scheduled for June 10 this year.
The election race has had an eventful start with allegations of the current mayor and his supporters trying to sabotage the candidacy of candidates vying for the seat. According to Lav Patel, it was Mayor Sam Joshi and his political machine that tried to block his council team from appearing on the primary ballot. However, in a major blow to this effort, the superior court quashed all such claims clearing the way for Patel and council. About
this major achievement, Patel says, “Democracy was challenged but the truth was revealed. It is a win for truth and democracy.”
The race for mayoral elections took a murky turn when claims of election misconduct were alleged by plaintiffs –
Former Edison Democratic Chairman Bimal Joshi, Praful Vaid, Keeran Vaid, Ratilal Patel and Chaitanya
Wattamar. According to plaintiffs the nomination submissions from Lav Patel and his running mates consisted of irregularities, misrepresentation and fraud. The serious nature of allegations led to a swift and emphatic response by defendants Lav Patel and his council. The defendants insisted that the allegations were bogus and a desperate attempt to undermine the

capabilities of contestants and lead them out of the race.
Plaintiffs’ attorney Raj Parikh known for several high-profile cases was unable to convince the court.
Edison voters would be now participating in the June 10th primary to choose one of three candidates vying for the mayoral role --- Lav Patel, Sam Joshi and Rich Brescher.
In a boost for the defendants Judge Toto, ruled that there was no evidence of fraud or misrepresentation and the petitions were valid.
The public now gets to vote on the scheduled date to choose amongst the candidates that individual whom they think would use his position in the most upright way.
New US Visa Rules 2025: Key Updates for International Students, Workers, and Travelers
WASHINGTON, DC- The United States has rolled out sweeping visa changes in 2025 under the Trump administration, shaking up the landscape for students, workers, and travelers alike. From revoked student visas to AI tracking protestors, here are 10 major policy shifts that are catching international applicants off guard. Whether you're pursuing a degree, building a career in tech, or simply planning a visit, the new rules could make entering—or staying in—the U.S. much tougher.
Top 10 Shocking US Visa Changes in 2025
1. Over 300 Student Visas Revoked — Even for Minor Offenses
More than 300 international students, including those at top universities like Harvard and Stanford, have had their visas revoked. The reasons? Some are as minor as traffic violations. Yes— speeding tickets. Understandably, students are alarmed, unsure if their legal status could vanish overnight over small infractions.
2. F-1 Visa Approvals Plummet, Especially for Indian Students Indian applicants are being hit hard. The F-1 visa rejection rate spiked to 41% in 2024, despite over 331,000 Indian students studying in the U.S. Expect longer processing times, stricter financial scrutiny, and intense interviews in 2025.
3. OPT May Be Eliminated The Optional Practical Training
(OPT) program—once a vital pathway for international graduates to gain U.S. work experience—is now on the chopping block. Proposed legislation could force students to apply directly for H-1B visas or leave the country immediately after graduation.
4. Visa Ban on South Sudanese Nationals
In a sudden diplomatic fallout, the U.S. has revoked all visas for citizens of South Sudan, including those with protected status.
This move raises concerns about future blanket bans targeting other countries with minimal notice.
5. H-1B Holders Told: Don’t Travel Abroad
Due to massive processing delays and shifting border rules, major tech firms are warning H-1B employees not to
travel internationally. Some companies have issued formal memos urging workers to stay put—fearing they may not be able to re-enter the U.S.
6. CIS Ombudsman’s Office Shuts Down
The closure of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman means one less resource for visa holders facing complex issues. Applicants now have fewer options to resolve disputes or escalate urgent cases.
7. AI Used to Monitor Student Protesters — and Revoke Visas
A controversial new policy is using AI to scan social media posts linked to campus protests, especially those labeled as anti-Semitic. Student visas have already been revoked based on online activity, and
lawsuits challenging this practice are quickly emerging.
8. H-2B Visas Maxed Out by April Seasonal work visas under the H-2B program are already exhausted for the second half of the fiscal year—months ahead of schedule.
Industries like hospitality, landscaping, and seafood processing are left scrambling for workers.
9. Gender Identity Policy Sparks Concern
USCIS now recognizes only two biological sexes—male and female—in visa applications. This change has alarmed LGBTQ+ applicants, especially trans and nonbinary individuals, who now face added documentation hurdles or possible denials.
10. J-1 Visa Holders Under Strict Scrutiny
International researchers under the J-1 exchange program are being penalized for even small administra-tive errors. In one case, a Harvard scholar lost their visa over an undeclared shipment of frog embryos. The message? Precision is everything.
Stay Informed, Stay Cautious
The U.S. immigration landscape in 2025 is unpredictable and rapidly evolving. Whether you're a student, a worker, or a visiting scholar, staying informed is no longer optional—it’s essential.
Follow USCIS updates closely, consult your immigration attorney, and think twice before making any major travel or visa-related decisions.

Congresswoman Jayapal Leads Effort to Challenge Monopolies in U.S. Economy
WASHINGTON, DC — Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA) is spearheading a renewed movement in Con-gress to combat corporate monopolies and advocate for the economic rights of everyday Americans. This week, she and a group of fellow lawmakers launched the Monopoly Busters Caucus, a coalition dedicated to reining in monopolistic power and promoting a pro-worker, pro-consumer, and prosmall business economy.
The bipartisan caucus, made up of nine founding members from across the Democratic spectrum, aims to address the growing dominance of a few corporations in key industries. “Families can’t afford basic gro-ceries while corporate profits soar,” said Jayapal, blaming monopolies for skyrocketing costs in housing, health care, and food. Joining her as co-chair, Rep. Chris Deluzio (PA) said monopolies have long “rigged the system” to favor big corporations at the expense of small businesses and consumers.

Jivrajka Family Gives $2M to Start UCLA South Asian Heart Program
LOS ANGELES, CA – In a landmark move to address rising cardiovascular risks in South Asians, UCLA Health has launched the South Asian Heart Program, made possible by a $2 million gift from the Jivrajka Family Foundation. The donation also establishes the Jivrajka Family Foundation Chair in the Division of Cardiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
Led by Dr. Ravi H. Dave, director of interventional cardiology at UCLA Health, the program will focus on prevention and early intervention for South Asians, a group disproportionately affected by heart disease.

individuals often face heart-related issues a decade earlier than others.
Dr. Vinod Jivrajka, a cardiologist and president of the Jivrajka Family Foundation, emphasized the foundation’s dedication to public health and praised UCLA’s commitment to community-focused care. The endowed chair will support a faculty leader in cardiology with a strong background in outreach and preven-tion.

Trump Targets Indian Pharma Industry Amid Rising Drug Costs Concerns
WASHINGTON, DC – President
Donald Trump has shifted his stance on pharmaceuticals, previously spared from his trade wars, by proposing a major tariff on drug imports. Announced on April 8 at a National Re-publican Congressional Committee event, the move is aimed at encouraging pharmaceutical companies to relocate operations to the U.S. However, the decision could significantly disrupt India’s pharmaceutical industry, which is heavily dependent on American trade. The U.S. is India’s largest pharmaceutical export market, accounting for $8.7 billion, or 31%, of India’s total drug exports in FY 2024. Indian firms supply over 45% of generics and 15% of biosimilars used in the U.S., with companies like Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy’s, Aurobindo, Zydus, and Gland Pharma deriving up to half their revenue from this market. Experts caution that tariffs could drive up drug prices in the U.S., cause supply disruptions, and erode competitiveness.
U.S. Considers Mandatory Registration for Those Living Illegally in the Country
WASHNGTON, DC- A federal judge has cleared the Trump administration to proceed with enforcing a longstanding immigration requirement that all individuals in the U.S. without legal status must register with the federal government and carry documentation. On April 10, Judge Trevor Neil McFadden ruled that ad-vocacy groups opposing the policy lacked legal standing, allowing the administration’s plan to move for-ward.
The Department of Homeland
Security has mandated registration by Friday for those in the country more than 30 days. The requirement applies to all undocumented individuals 14 years and older, including Cana-dians staying over 30 days. Registrants must submit fingerprints, addresses, and carry proof of registration or risk fines and imprisonment.
Secretary Kristi Noem stated, “President Trump and I have a clear message: leave now. If you do, you may return lawfully and pursue the American dream.” Critics argue the policy forces undocumented individuals to choose between risking arrest by registering or remaining in the shadows.
The National Immigration Law Center called the ruling “disappointing” and advised affected individuals to consult attorneys. While the registration law dates back to 1940, it has rarely been enforced and was last used broadly post-9/11. The Trump administration insists the rule already exists and is now being properly implemented.

FBI Director Kash Patel Removed from Acting ATF Role
WASHINGTON, DC- Kash Patel was removed as the acting head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) just days after assuming the role. In an unusual arrangement, Patel had been appointed acting ATF director in February, shortly after being sworn in to lead the FBI, placing him in charge of two major Justice Department agencies simultaneously.
Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll has since replaced Patel as the acting head of the ATF, the agency responsi-ble for enforcing the nation’s gun laws. According to a source familiar with the matter, Patel was removed at the end of February, although the change was never publicly announced.
As of April 7, Patel was still listed as the

acting director in a press release, and senior ATF officials were only informed of the leadership change on Wednesday,
according to another source who requested anonymity to discuss internal matters. Daniel Driscoll, 38, of North Carolina, currently serves as Secretary of the U.S. Army. He spoke at a Senate Armed Services confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill on January 30, 2025. Driscoll previously served as an adviser to Vice President JD Vance, whom he met during their time at Yale Law School. His military service spanned less than four years, during which he attained the rank of first lieutenant. In 2020, Driscoll ran un-successfully in the Republican primary for a North Carolina congressional seat, receiving about 8% of the vote in a crowded field. Driscoll will continue to serve as Secretary of the Army, a defense official confirmed.
Meanwhile, Justice Department
officials are evaluating a proposal to merge the ATF and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) into a single agency. While both frequently collaborate with the FBI, the ATF and DEA currently operate under separate leadership and have distinct missions.
The ATF handles investigations related to violent crime, gun trafficking, arson, and bombings, and provides technical expertise in gun tracing and crime scene intelligence. The DEA focuses on enforcing federal drug laws, targeting criminal drug organizations, and curbing the flow of fentanyl and other illicit substances.
According to a recent memo from Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, the proposed consolidation aims to “achieve efficiencies in resources, case deconfliction, and regulatory efforts.”

NEW YORK, NY — New York City will hire 3,700 new teachers by September to reduce class sizes, Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday. The positions will be spread across 750 schools as
part of the 2026 ex-ecutive budget, supporting the city's compliance with class size limits passed in 2022. Schools submitted individualized class size reduction plans, first introduced in fall 2024, to guide changes for the 2025-
These plans were developed in collaboration with school leadership teams, reflecting a school-driven strategy. The initiative builds on previous community engagement efforts, including a 2023 class size working group that provided key recommendations.
Class sizes must be capped between 20 and 25 stu-dents by September 2028, with phased implementation over five years.
Principals will have extra time to hire staff and plan, and funding details will be released later this spring. “What seemed impossible has be-come possible,” said UFT President Michael Mulgrew, praising the progress made.

IRS to Provide Tax Information of Immigrants to ICE for Enforcement
WASHINGTON, DC- In a major policy shift, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has agreed to share taxpayer information with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to support deportation efforts. This move marks a significant departure from the IRS’s traditional stance on protecting taxpayer confidentiality.
Court documents reveal that ICE may now request personal tax data—such as home addresses, income, and family details—from the IRS for individuals under investigation or subject to removal orders. The agreement reportedly hinges on a tax law exception allowing data sharing in criminal probes. The decision, backed by the Trump administration, has sparked legal and ethical concerns, including within the IRS. Internal warnings previously noted this could violate laws safeguarding taxpayer privacy. Around the same time, the agency’s top lawyer was demoted and replaced by a Trump nominee. Immigrant advocates worry the policy undermines years of trust. Millions of undocumented immigrants use ITINs to pay taxes, contributing billions to

Although no data has yet been shared, advocacy groups are pursuing legal action to halt the agreement. Immigrants are urged to seek legal counsel and stay informed as the situation develops.

Michigan Attorney Detained by Federal Agents at Detroit Airport
HiIndia Newsdesk
DETROIT, MI- Michigan-based attorney Amir Makled was detained by federal immigration agents while returning from a family vacation in the Dominican Republic.
On Sunday, at Detroit Metro Airport, Makled — a U.S. citizen — attempted to pass through customs with his wife and children. While the rest of his family was cleared without issue, Makled overheard an agent call for assistance from the "Tactical Terrorism Response Team."
"My heart fell into my stomach at that point. I was so concerned and worried," Makled told.

Makled believes the incident is connected to his legal work. One of his current clients is a student charged in connection with a pro-Palestinian protest at the University of Michigan. He suspects his detainment was a form of retaliation — especially given the Trump administration's past targeting of visa holders who ex-press support for Palestine.
"The purpose of searching my phone doesn't have anything to do with terrorism. There is only a chilling effect, and it's done to be intimidating," he said.

Lawmakers Urge NYC Chopper Ban Following Hudson River Incident
HiIndia Newsdesk
NEW YORK, NY- The fatal Hudson River helicopter crash on Thursday has reignited debate over sightseeing helicopter tours in New York City. State Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal (D-Manhattan) called for restricting city airspace to only first responders and the press, labeling tourist flights as unsafe. “There’s no reason to al-low tourists and tour flight operators to use our valuable, precious airspace,” he said, criticizing the FAA’s control over airspace above 500 feet, which limits local regulation.
City Councilmember Chris Marte echoed similar concerns, stating helicopters should be reserved for emergencies and essential operations, not luxury or sightseeing. “Now is a moment for grief, but also for urgent policy change,” he said.
However, Mayor Eric Adams opposed a ban, emphasizing the need for safety and proper maintenance while noting helicopters are part of the city’s appeal
Advocacy Group CoHNA Raises Alarm Over New California Legislation
SACRAMENTO, CA – The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) has voiced concern following the California Senate’s Standing Committee on Governmental Organization's approval of SB509. Introduced by Senator Anna Caballero, the bill seeks to create a law enforcement training program on “transnational repression”—a term describing tactics used by foreign regimes to intimidate individuals in exile, including surveillance, online harassment, and coercion of family abroad.
and used by business leaders. “We should let the in-vestigation go its course,” he said. The crash claimed six lives, including Spanish tourists Agustin Escobar, a Siemens CEO, his wife, their three young children, and pilot
Johnson. The Bell 206 helicopter departed Downtown Skyport at 2:59 p.m. and crashed near Pier 40 just after 3:15 p.m. The FAA is investigating the cause.
Tariff Tensions Surge as Asia Society Analyzes US-China Standoff
NEW YORK, NY — As tensions between the U.S. and China escalate, experts at the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) warn of serious global consequences stemming from the deepening trade war. Following China’s latest tariff hike on U.S. imports— raising the total to 125%—Wendy Cutler, ASPI Vice President, noted that hopes of Beijing backing down are fading. “China is in for the long haul,” she said, pointing out that tariffs alone
may no longer be China’s only tool in this economic standoff. With tariffs now reaching 145% for Chinese imports into the U.S. and 125% for U.S. imports into China, trade between the world’s largest economies is nearly paralyzed. Cutler foresees a potential reset in the future, stating that both nations will eventually need to re-engage to manage the growing risks.
Daniel Russel, ASPI’s Vice President of International Security and Diplomacy, described China’s approach as patient and strategic. He said President Xi Jinping is not reacting impulsively but is betting on outlasting the U.S. “China is aiming to buffer its economy, expand its influence, and outmaneuver Washington,” Russel explained. Xi’s Southeast Asia tour exemplifies China’s pivot to long-term regional engagement, as the trade war evolves into a wider geopolitical contest.
CaresGlobal Educates Pakistan Hindu Refugee Kids in India
DALLAS, TX – The nonprofit CaresGlobal, based in the U.S., has partnered with Rajasthan’s Mother World Trust to launch a dedicated classroom for Pakistani Hindu refugee children in Jodhpur—many of whom have never had access to formal education due to displacement, visa challenges, and lack of documenta-tion. The initiative offers full scholarships covering tuition, uniforms, books, and transportation. Most of the students come from families that fled religious persecution in Pakistan and continue to face systemic bar-riers in India.
“In Jodhpur alone, we found 60 children who had never stepped inside a classroom,” said Richa Gautam, Executive Director of CaresGlobal.
“We’re here to change that.”
Mother World Trust, a grassroots organization with deep roots in education and healthcare, oversees the center’s daily operations and community engagement. “We focus on building a strong foundation for learning and well-being,” said Chairman Rajendra Gurjar.
The program also incorporates mobile science labs and hands-on STEM education. U.S.-based educator Vinita Singh leads the science curriculum, while local principal Reshma Malani, who has Sindhi heritage, oversees academic planning.
“Our goal is to make education both accessible and relevant,” said Manoj Malani, Vice President of Mother World Trust.
This classroom follows the success of CaresGlobal’s first refugee learning center in Ahmedabad, launched in 2024.
Shen Yun Performs to Full House After Bomb Threat Evacuation
HiIndia
CLAREMONT, CA — Shen Yun
Performing Arts, the New York-based classical Chinese dance company known for its vibrant billboards across Los Angeles, returned to the stage to a full house shortly after a bomb threat prompted an emergency evacuation. The threat, which later turned out to be false, occurred just hours before Shen Yun’s final performance at Pomona College’s Bridges Auditorium on March 30.
The incident unfolded when Claremont Colleges Campus Safety received a threatening email, triggering an immediate evacuation of the venue. Claremont police, supported by canine units, conducted a thorough sweep of the building. No explosives were found. Indian-Americans make up a significant portion of Shen Yun’s annual
audience base, contributing to the group's popularity across the U.S.
This was not an isolated incident. Weeks earlier, a similar threat disrupted a Shen Yun performance at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Both the White House and the U.S. State Department have condemned the threats against the company. Shen Yun alleges that the campaign of intimidation is orchestrated by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which opposes the group's mission of reviving traditional Chinese culture.
In addition to threats, Shen Yun has faced diplomatic pressure. Chinese officials have reportedly contacted venues and local authorities to dissuade them from hosting the group—at times even warning of potential economic repercussions for non-compliance.
