Trump Pauses Tariffs After Market Chaos, But Keeps Pressure on China

Trump Pauses Tariffs After Market Chaos, But Keeps Pressure on China

BEIJING/WASHINGTON: Global markets rebounded sharply Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump unexpectedly paused sweeping new tariffs just a day after they took effect, following severe financial market turmoil.

Trump’s reversal came after stock markets plunged and U.S. bond yields surged, reminiscent of early COVID19-era volatility. "People were getting yippy," Trump said, referencing nervous investor behavior. The S&P 500 soared 9.5%, Japan’s Nikkei jumped 8%, and Chinese stocks rose, though the yuan dropped to a post2008 low.

The White House clarified that a 10% blanket duty on nearly all U.S. imports remains, while tariffs on autos, steel, and aluminum are untouched. The pause also excludes Canada and Mexico unless they meet USMCA rules of origin, due to ongoing

US stocks make historic gains after Trump pauses some tariffs

US shares have rocketed after US President Donald Trump said he would suspend steep tariffs on goods from most countries, and instead impose a 10% import tax rate.

The White House said it was backing off on higher levies for trade partners that had agreed to negotiate, although Trump said he would raise tariffs on goods from China even further, to at least 125% "effective immediately".

The S&P 500 soared 9.5% in the biggest one-day rally since 2008, following days of turmoil sparked by the tariffs. Trump's decision came less than 24 hours after the latest round of tariffs had come into force, hitting key trade partners, such as Vietnam, which saw its imports facing a new levy of 46%.

The upcoming Christmas season in the United States may experience notable challenges due to a combination of trade tensions and environmental factors affecting both artificial and real Christmas tree supplies.

Artificial Christmas Trees:

The U.S. heavily relies on imports for artificial Christmas trees, with China being the dominant supplier. In 2022, China exported nearly $10 billion worth of Christmas trees and decorations globally, with the U.S. being its largest customer, importing $3.17 billion worth of these goods. However, recent escalations in trade tensions have led to increased tariffs— some reaching up to 104%—on Chinese imports. This has resulted in a sharp decline in orders from American retailers, as the higher costs deter purchases. Chinese manufacturers are

Despite the broader pause, Trump increased tariffs on Chinese imports

from 104% to 125%. Beijing, which had already imposed 84% tariffs on U.S. goods, may retaliate further. The

Meta Whistleblower Claims China Censorship Collab

A Meta whistleblower told US senators on Wednesday that the company undermined national security in order to build a $18 billion business in China.

At a congressional hearing, Sarah WynnWilliams, a former global public policy director at Facebook, said she watched as executives decided to provide the Chinese Communist Party with access to the data of Meta users, including that of Americans.

Meta has disputed Ms Wynn-Williams's statements. "Sarah Wynn-Williams' testimony is divorced from reality and riddled with false claims," said Meta spokesman Ryan Daniels.

Mr Daniels said CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been public about the company's interest in offering its services in China, but added. "[T]he fact is this: we do not operate our services in China today."

Meta does, however, generate advertising revenue from advertisers based in China.

During her testimony before a Senate judiciary subcommittee, Ms WynnWilliams also alleged the parent company of Facebook and Instagram worked "hand in glove" with Beijing to build censorship tools aimed at silencing critics of the Chinese Community Party.

A Silent Christmas?

U.S. Faces Tree Shortage Amid Trade Tensions and Climate Woes

head of China’s top e-commerce group warned of price hikes or market exits by Chinese sellers on Amazon. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed the tariff threat was a strategic move to push countries into negotiations. “This was his strategy all along,” he said, adding that China had been “goaded into a bad position.”

Markets reacted with optimism, but analysts cautioned the damage may linger. Business investment and consumer spending have slowed, and 75% of Americans expect rising prices. Goldman Sachs reduced its recession odds to 45% from 65%.

Trump signaled openness to talks with China but said other countries would be prioritized. “China wants to make a deal,” he said. “They just don’t know how quite to go about it.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump posted on Truth Social: “BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well... THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!”

Australia turns down China's offer to 'join hands' to fight US tariffs

HiIndia Newsdesk

SYDNEYAustralia on Thursday declined Beijing's proposal to work together to counter U.S. tariffs, saying instead it would continue to diversify its trade and lower its reliance on China, its largest trading partner. "We are not going to be holding hands with China in respect of any contest that is going on in the world," Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles told Sky News, referring to the Chinese ambassador's proposal for countries to "join hands" on trade.

struggling, and some are attempting to shift focus to other markets, though with limited success. Additionally, Cambodia, which accounted for 66% of the total U.S. imports of LED Christmas tree lights, is also impacted by these trade measures, further complicating the supply chain.

Real Christmas Trees:

Domestic production of real Christmas trees is facing its own set of challenges. Severe drought conditions in the Northeast have led to significant losses, with some farmers reporting up to 25% of their crops being affected. For instance, Chris Moran of Vandervalk Farm in Massachusetts reported losing approximately 500 out of 2,700 seedlings due to the drought. These losses are expected to impact the availability of mature trees in the coming years. Additionally, other factors such as root rot, labor shortages, and the aftermath of hurricanes have further strained the supply of real trees.

"India, China Relationship Is...": Beijing's Message After Trump's 104% Tariff

Relations between China and India have been tenuous, at best, and downright hostile more often than not, particularly after violence in Ladakh's Galwan Valley in June 2020.

New Delhi: Donald Trump's tariffs are doing, it appears, what decades of political and diplomatic wrangling could not, at least with any great degree of success - to get India and China to work together, to "make the dragon and elephant dance", as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said last month.

The US President's tariffs on Chinanow at a jaw-dropping 104 per cent after Beijing responded to the first round with a 34 per cent levy - have led to a second full-blown trade war between the two global giants, with the Chinese vowing to fight "American aggression... to the end". Trump's tariffs, and the resulting 'game of chicken' with China's Xi Jinping, also appear to have led Beijing to make several conciliatory statements about New Delhi; the latest was Tuesday, when the Chinese Embassy called on India and China to "stand together to overcome difficulties".

Dominican Republic nightclub collapse kills 113

At least 113 people have been killed and more than 150 injured after a roof collapsed at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic's capital Santo Domingo, officials have said.

A provincial governor and former Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel were among the victims. Dotel, 51, died on the way to hospital after being pulled from the debris. The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday at a concert by popular merengue singer Rubby Pérez at the Jet Set nightclub. He was among those killed in the incident, his manager said.

Hundreds of people were inside the venue and some 400 rescuers are still searching for survivors. There are fears the death toll will rise further. The director of the Emergency Operations Centre (COE), Juan Manuel Méndez, said he was hopeful that many of those buried under the collapsed roof were still alive. Jet Set is a popular nightclub in Santo Domingo which regularly hosts dance music concerts on Monday evenings.

"China-India economic and trade relationship is based on mutual benefits. Facing the US' abuse of tariffs, which deprives countries, especially in the 'Global South', of their right to development, the largest developing countries (in the area) should stand together..." Yu Jing, the

spokesperson for the Embassy in Delhi, said on X.

The long post also seemed to contain a warning for Trump, telling the US President, "... trade and tariff wars have no winners. All countries should uphold the principle of extensive consultation, practice true multilateralism, (and) jointly

Russia Welcomes Nuclear Talks Between US And Iran

Moscow: Moscow on Tuesday welcomed upcoming nuclear talks between the United States and Iran after Washington and Tehran made the shock announcement that high-level discussions were scheduled for Saturday. US President Donald Trumps said Monday that the United States was

starting direct talks with Iran over its nuclear programme, during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"We know that certain contacts -direct and indirect -- are planned in Oman. And, of course, this can only be welcomed because it can lead to de-escalation of tensions around Iran," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Russia "absolutely" supported the diplomatic initiative, he added. Moscow had previously called for tensions between Washington and Tehran to be resolved diplomatically, following Trump's apparent threat to bomb Iran if it did not come to the negotiating table.

Three Americans jailed over failed DR Congo coup returned home

Three Americans convicted for their role in a failed coup in Democratic Republic of Congo last year have been sent home to the US to serve the rest of their jail terms.

The three were originally sentenced to death by a military court before their

sentences were commuted to life in prison last week. US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce said the three were "in our custody". The repatriation comes as the US and DR Congo explore a deal to exploit the central African country's huge mineral wealth. Last week, US President Donald Trump's senior adviser for Africa visited DR Congo and confirmed that the two countries were in talks about minerals and said it could involve "multibilliondollar investments". DR Congo has large deposits of coltan and cobalt, used in electronic equipment and batteries for electric cars, which are currently largely extracted by Chinese mining companies.

oppose all forms of unilateralism and protectionism".

The embassy also underlined its position of strength vis-a-vis the global economy, pointing out China contributes to around 30 percent of annual global growth, on average. "We will continue to work with the rest of the world to safeguard the multilateral trade system..." Ms Yu's post said. India has not yet responded to this statement, although External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the relationship between the two countries is moving in a "positive direction".

Ms Yu's X post followed a statement by President Jinping himself; on April 1, the Chinese leader told President Droupadi Murmu in Beijing that India and China should work together. That calls for cooperation have come down from the highest level in Beijing is significant, even if it is apparent they were prompted by the flood of tariffs unleashed by the United States.

UN Chief: Gaza a 'Killing Field', Urges Action on Blockade

The UN's secretary-general says "aid has dried up [and] the floodgates of horror have re-opened" in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has blocked the entry of all goods and resumed the war against Hamas.

"Gaza is a killing field, and civilians are in an endless death loop," António Guterres said on Tuesday.

His comments come after the heads of six UN agencies appealed to world leaders to act urgently to ensure food and supplies reached Palestinians there.

Israel's foreign ministry insisted there was enough food in Gaza and accused Guterres of "spreading slander against Israel".

Israel blockaded Gaza on 2 March, after the first stage of a ceasefire expired. Hamas refused to extend that part of the truce, accusing Israel of reneging on its commitments.

Israel then renewed its aerial bombardment and ground offensive on 18 March and these have since killed 1,449 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza. The Israeli military insists it does not target civilians.

"You

Are Not Welcome": No US Visas, Residence Permits If You Do This

Washington:

The US immigration authorities have announced that they will screen social media accounts and deny visas or residence permits to individuals who post anti-Semitic content.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which is an agency of the Homeland Security Department, said it will begin considering "aliens' antisemitic activity" on social media and the "physical harassment" of Jewish individuals as grounds for denying immigration benefit requests

The policy will be effective immediately and apply to student visas and requests for permanent resident "green cards" to stay in the US, it said in a statement. Posts defined as anti-Semitic will include social media activity in support of groups classified by the US as terrorists, including Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Lebanon's Hezbollah and Yemen's Houthis. "USCIS will consider social media content that indicates an alien endorsing, espousing, promoting, or supporting antisemitic terrorism, antisemitic terrorist organizations, or other antisemitic activity as a negative factor in any USCIS discretionary analysis when adjudicating immigration benefit requests," the agency said.

Why Trump Paused Tariffs for All but China

Washington, April 10 – U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a surprise 90-day pause on sweeping tariffs for all countries except China.

The decision, which seemed unlikely just a day earlier, follows mounting pressure from business leaders, fellow Republicans, and turmoil in financial markets.

Trump said the pause was granted to over 75 countries that had refrained from retaliating against his trade measures.

During the freeze, a reduced 10% reciprocal tariff will apply.

However, Trump escalated the trade war with China, raising tariffs on Chinese imports from 104% to 125%. On Truth Social, he wrote, “China has shown a lack of respect to the World’s Markets… the days of ripping off

Despite earlier resistance to reversing course, Trump appeared influenced by warnings from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and economic officials about alarming trends in the bond market. “People were getting yippie,” Trump said, referring to nervous investors. “You have to be flexible.” Markets rallied sharply in response. India, which had been hit by a 26% tariff, is expected to benefit from the pause. Talks are underway between India and the U.S. on a multi-sectoral trade deal. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said both sides aim for an expeditious, mutually beneficial agreement as ties continue to deepen.

In Gujarat Meet, Congress Pitches For Quota In Private Educational Institutions

Ahmedabad:

The Congress on Wednesday accused the BJP-led government of a "relentless systematic and conspiratorial attack" on India's constitutional institutions as it talked of changes in the party's organisational structure by empowering district units with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge stating that those who cannot work for the party should take rest and those who can't discharge their duties should retire.

The 'Nyay Path' resolution adopted at the AICC session here came down heavily on the BJP-led government, accusing it of "failure on economy, foreign affairs and betrayal with the farmers".

It called for reservation for OBCs, STs and SCs in private educational institutions and said this should be implemented without delay.

The party accused BJP-led government of being "weak-kneed" and said successive Congress Governments enhanced India's global stature and demonstrated leadership on the world stage through a principled and visionary foreign policy.

"Our governments' foreign policy was always centred around protection of India's interests, global balance of power,

finding solutions through mutual harmony and dialogue, international cooperation and peaceful resolution of disputes", it said, and alleged that the BJP-led government "compromised India's foreign policy at the altar of 'individual branding and serving 'vested interests,'". Congress said it believes that India's foreign policy can't be an instrument of divisive politics for the domestic political agenda "as is being done by the BJP government".

The party said that China has illegally occupied thousands of square kilometres of Indian territory in Eastern Ladakh, yet the current BJP Government, founded upon the rhetoric of showing "'lal aankh' has utterly failed to restore the status quo ante, as it existed prior to April 2020".

New Trouble For India? Trump Says US Will Tariff Pharmaceutical Imports Soon

Washington: Continuing his economic onslaught, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Washington is planning to announce a "major" tariff on pharmaceutical imports soon. India's pharmaceuticals sector, one of the most dependent domestic industries on trade with America, could be significantly impacted by the move. Speaking at an event at the National Republican Congressional Committee, America's commander-in-chief said the tariff will incentivize drug companies to move their operations to the US. Previously, the Trump administration had kept pharmaceuticals and semiconductors away from the ambit of its reciprocal tariff policy.

How Could India Be Impacted?

Experts have warned that higher US tariffs on pharmaceutical imports could severely impact both Washington and New Delhi.

America is India's largest export market for pharmaceutical goods. In FY 24, of India's $27.9 billion worth of pharma exports, 31 per cent or $8.7 billion to the US, according to the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion

Canada Hikes Federal Minimum Wage By 2.4%

Canada has hiked the minimum wage by 2.4 per cent from 17.30 Canadian dollars to $17.75 per hour as part of its annual Consumer Price Index.

Ottawa: The Canadian government has raised the Federal Minimum Wage Rate for private sector workers. The move, which came into effect on April 1, will benefit thousands of Indian students and professionals working in federally regulated sectors in Canada, including banking, interprovincial transportation and the telecommunications industry.

Canada has hiked the minimum wage by 2.4 per cent from 17.30 Canadian dollars to $17.75 per hour. The step is part of Canada's annual Consumer Price Index, which adjusts the federal minimum wage rate each year on April 1 relative to the previous calendar year.

"The federal minimum wage brings stability and certainty to Canadian workers and businesses alike and helps reduce income inequality across the board. Today's increase brings us one step closer to building a more fair economy," Steven MacKinnon, Canada's Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, said in a statement.

Council of India, an industry body. Per reports, India supplies over 45 per cent of generic and 15 per cent of biosimilar drugs used in the US. Firms like Dr Reddy's, Aurobindo Pharma, Zydus Lifesciences, Sun Pharma and Gland Pharma reportedly earn anywhere from 30-50 per cent of their total revenues from the American market.

‘They’re dying to make a deal’: Donald Trump

Rubbing salt in the wounds of tariff-hit nations, Donald Trump on Tuesday said that they were desperate to do anything while trying to negotiate with him.

Speaking at the National Republican Congressional Committee, Trump painted a picture of foreign leaders scrambling to renegotiate under pressure.

“I’m telling you — these countries are calling us up, kissing my a**. They are dying to make a deal — ‘please sir make a deal, I’ll do anything, I’ll do anything sir,’” Trump said. Trump also targeted his own party’s skeptics, precisely those Republican lawmakers who have challenged his unilateral approach to trade negotiations.

Further targeting the naysayers, he said, “I’ll see some rebel Republicans that want to grandstand say ‘I think that Congress should take over negotiations’.”

Trump further added that if that were the case, “China wouldn't have been slapped with 104 per cent tariffs, and vice versa.

Trump also targeted his own party’s skeptics, precisely those Republican lawmakers who have challenged his unilateral approach to trade negotiations.

Let me tell you, you don’t negotiate like I negotiate.”

He went on to deride congressional negotiation strategies as national liabilities, accusing lawmakers of undermining the very tariffs that, in his view, put America first.

“Congress takes over negotiating to sell America fast because you’re going to go busted,” Trump said. “A couple of your congressmen said, ‘I think we should get involved in the negotiation of the tariffs’,” he scoffed.

The most biting sarcasm was reserved for China. “Oh, that’s what I need — I need some guy telling me how to negotiate. I tell you, the happiest people in the world would be Chinese. They wouldn’t be paying 104 per cent. I tell, they’d be paying no per cent [instead] we’d be paying them 104 per cent,” he said, mocking both the idea of compromise and the Democrats’ criticisms of his trade war tactics.

Pharma downturn

Later in his speech, Trump revealed that he plans to impose “major” tariffs on imported pharmaceutical products.

“Tariffs on pharma will be there because we don’t make our own pharma drugs; they are made in another country. The same packet in the US is priced at USD 10 or more,” Trump said. “We are going to tariff pharma in such a way that companies will come rushing to us very soon. The advantage we have is, we are a very big market.”

India-US Both Will Be Impacted

Experts have warned that higher US tariffs on pharmaceutical imports could severely impact both Washington and New Delhi as they will raise production costs, eroding price competitiveness for manufacturers and higher prices for customers.

"In case the US starts imposing tariffs on the pharma sector, it will impact both countries," the HDFC Securities analysts told financial daily Mint. They explained that America depends on low-cost generics manufactured in India, and higher tariffs would lead to price hikes, inflation and drug shortages in the country. Meanwhile, Indian companies, operating on thin margins in the US generics space, may struggle to absorb costs and end up passing them on to US consumers or insurers.

Sectors which can witness modest gains include textiles made-up, apparel, ceramic products, inorganic chemicals and pharmaceuticals

India’s merchandise exports to the US from sectors such as marine items, gold, electrical, and electronics are expected to decline by $5.76 billion this year due to increased American duties, according to the data analysis of think tank GTRI.

However, it added that India’s competitive position in select product segments may help cushion some of the losses.

Sectors which can witness modest gains include textiles made-up, apparel, ceramic products, inorganic chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

The US has announced an additional 26 per cent duty on Indian goods barring pharma, semiconductors and certain energy goods from April 9. The 10 per cent baseline tariffs are there from April 5-8. “Using detailed trade data and tariff schedules, the analysis estimates that India could see a decline of $5.76 billion, or 6.41 per cent, in exports to the US in 2025,” Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said.

Angry Fans Hit back at Hrithik Roshan, Show Organizers: “Paid $1500 but were Refused Picture with the Star”

Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan who is currently on a multicity tour to the US is already finding himself grappling with fan disappointment at the beginning of his trip. Recently, at his event Rangotsav which kickstarted in Dallas, fans who paid a whopping $1500 to buy a ticket were refused a photo opportunity or a proper meet and greet. The high price of the ticket led most attendees to expect a well-managed event where the fans would get an opportunity to interact or take pictures with the Bollywood star. But the event-goers were left high and dry when after about half an hour of dance performance, the super star left mid-way leaving many still in line with their kids who had come to get a closer interaction with the star. At the second leg of Rangotsav which was held in Atlanta, the attendees had a similar experience – they were dejected to see the chaos, mismanagement and lack of any proper planning at the event. Attendees Complained, Kids Mistreated

An attendee by the name of Roona left an angry comment on Roshans’ Instagram page saying: “Heartbroken and beyond disappointed today. I was genuinely a fan of this actor—until now. He was in Atlanta, and my child was supposed to perform with him. We were so excited and had even paid for the opportunity. But thanks to the complete mismanagement by the organizers and his team, it never happened. Seeing my kid’s excitement turn into confusion and then heartbreak was devastating (She is only 10). We expected better.” Many others shared similar sentiment. According to some attendees many young kids who were part of a dance academy were hoping to dance with the superstar on the stage. For many who bought the ticket between $1200-$1500, the only justification to buy this steep ticket was a chance to mingle with the star, which never happened. Another angry attendee from Atlanta wrote: “We are part of the SIDS DANCE ACADEMY in Cumming, Ga!! My daughter and a whole bunch of kids paid a lot of money so you would dance with them on stage. They practiced hard for days and never got to dance on stage and were treated terribly by the organizers. I felt you should be aware of the disastrous planning. The kids, teachers and parents were disappointed to say the least and the organizers wouldn’t refund us. Would love for you to get involved and at least call SIDS DANCE ACADEMY in Cumming, Ga and speak to the kids.”

Fans Angry Hrithik Roshan –“Came late, Left Quickly” Many who attended the event, affirmed that what also hurt them was that not only the event organizer paid no attention towards streamlining the show or organizing it well, the star too seemed distant and did not care about fans waiting for a meet and greet for hours. The attendees even took to the social media page of tours’ national promoter 3Sixty Shows and shared their grudges

Hrithik Roshan who enjoys a great fan-following amongst the desi diaspora in America, had Holi events lined up in major cities but fans are already angry and dejected with the mismanagement that unfolded during his shows at Dallas and Atlanta

against this mismanagement. An attendee wrote: “As someone who was part of the dance group, I can't express how disheartening this entire experience was at Dallas yesterday. We were assured a group picture with Hrithik Roshan, yet spent over 5 hours being shuffled around with zero direction. The event was chaotic, the management was unresponsive, and no one knew what was going on. Hrithik came hours late, stayed for barely 30 minutes, and didn’t engage with fans or performers at all. This was not the experience we were promised. Extremely disappointed.”

Another user wrote on social media: “spent $1500 + general admission tickets for each person to meet Hrithik Roshan and I didn't even get a picture. Refused to take pictures with half the meet and greet line and turned us away even though we spent so much money.”

The bad reviews about the management of the show continued as another

attendee quipped in the discussion by writing: “We waited 2 hours in line just to get refused?? Not to mention it was outside in such cold weather. He showed up for a 30-minute show. Waste of VIP!!! Oh yes, they won't even give us a refund!! Love Hrithik but this event was so unorganized even he was annoyed!!” What went Wrong?

It is no secret that when Bollywood star come to the West, they get so much love and adulation from the diaspora. Often times it is seen that Indian celebrities receive more attention from expats in the West than back home. And there are many relatable as well as sentimental reasons for that. For many, meeting or seeing their favorite Bollywood stars in person is that affirmation of the deep love and attachment they have for Indian culture and everything Indian, for some others it is the nostalgia that reminds them of the lives they left behind but the love and memories never really parted their hearts. Interestingly, for some others who grew up in India and are now raising their kids in the West, an opportunity to connect with their childhood idols is their way of showing their kids their roots and cultures. It is because of these very compelling reasons that any Bollywood or Indian celebrity attendance at an event in America or anywhere in the west immediately becomes a high -profile event that

Is Hrithik in America for Holi Events or for his Netflix show?

Amidst the chaos that ensued following the poor management and treatment of attendees at the Rangotsav 2025 – the multi-city Holi event, there are also questions surrounding if Roshan flew in especially for this event or was roped in for the event because of his presence in America. An industry informer shared with Hi India, that Roshan may have been in the US during this time for his show – The Roshans – a docuseries that follows the life and times of the Roshan family. According to the source often organizers time their events in conjunction with the dates that celebrities are scheduled to be in the country and plan the show. While the situation is a win-win both for the celebrity and the organizer as they save money and time, it is often the unsuspecting fans who are then at the receiving end. Sometimes lack of time leads to last-minute changes and for someone who pends big money on a ticket hoping to get value for their money the deal stars looking as a scam.

needs proper planning, meticulous arrangement and a smooth, hassle-free experience as often these events are also attended in high numbers.

Even though the organizer is yet to respond to many angry messages left by attendees, it could be speculated that the lack of time or an efficient management of a big star and the volume of tickets sold – all are to be kept in consideration and every single small or big itinerary and the flow of the event has to be planned much in advance. So, that there are no surprises even the star of the show, the celebrity has to be given a prior run-through of how the event would flow and most importantly what the guest expectations could be. If the organizers promised ticket buyers certain experiences or privileges that come with a higher value ticket – that commitment needs to be honored. Unless there are unforeseen circumstances, delays and unnecessary waits must also be accounted for so that the crowds do to grow impatient even before an event starts.

The event continues

The Rangotsav 2025 event, which Hrithik is a part of is been promoted as a multi-city event where attendees get a chance to meet and greet the star. The event description mentions – “Meet and Greet Opportunities: Get up close and personal with Hrithik Roshan. Fans will have the chance to interact with the star, creating unforgettable memories.

After the Dallas, Atlanta and Houston events, the show is scheduled to be held at three other US locations -- New Jersey, Chicago, IL and San Jose, CA. Those who have already brought the ticket are anxious about how their experience is going to be. For now, those who have attended the show are warning the future attendees already. A user wrote on Hrithik Roshan’s page: “The coordination and execution of the Atlanta show were deeply disappointing. Many of your fans invested their time and money with the hope of meeting you and taking pictures, but the experience turned out to be disheartening.

Unfortunately, what we witnessed was complete chaos— small kids being pushed and even stampeded. I personally saw children caught in potentially dangerous situations, which was extremely concerning. Going forward, please consider partnering only with capable and experienced organizers for such events. Poor management not only affects the fan experience but can also harm your credibility, which we know you’ve built with so much hard work over the years.”

In absence of the star or the management replying to several of such angry messages the nervousness of those who already paid and planned their visit is understandable.

While we hope that any logistical or management issues are addressed and fans get the best experience of their lives when they come to see their idols, all eyes are on the events lined up for the weekend in NJ, Chicago and California – all three major hubs for desis in America!

US Bill Threatens Work Visas for 3 Lakh Indian Students

A proposed bill in the United States Congress is threatening to upend the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, a vital work authorisation initiative for international students. This move has sent shockwaves through the Indian student community in the US.

A proposed bill in the US Congress could dismantle the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, a critical work authorization initiative for international students. Over 300,000 Indian students, the largest beneficiaries of the program, face uncertainty if the bill passes, according to The Economic Times.

The OPT program allows students—especially in STEM fields—to work in the US for up to three years post-graduation. In the 2023-2024 academic year, 97,556 Indian students participated in OPT, a 41% rise from the previous year. The proposed bill could abruptly end this opportunity, forcing students to return home after graduation and derailing career plans. Many rely on OPT income to repay student loans. With the bill looming, students are scrambling to secure H-1B work visas through tech companies. However, the H-1B visa is capped annually, making the process highly competitive.

Legal expert Poorvi Chothani notes that students may lose their chance to gain work experience in the US entirely. In response, many have canceled summer trips to India, fearing re-entry issues. Top universities like Cornell, Columbia, and Yale have unofficially advised international students against traveling.

The proposed legislation is seen as part of a broader anti-immigration push tied to Donald Trump’s political agenda. Universities worry the bill could cause a sharp drop in international student enrollment, impacting the academic and economic ecosystem in the US.

RBI Cuts Rate to 6%, Home Loans Cheaper Amid Trump Tariffs

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India has cut repo rate by 25 basis points, bringing it down to 6 per cent. This will reduce borrowing costs for banks and enable them to lend money to individual customers at lower rates, reducing EMIs for loans. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said today that the Monetary Policy Committee had voted unanimously to reduce the repo rate.

This is the second time this year that the central bank has cut repo rate. Earlier, it had reduced the key rate to 6.25 per cent in February.

The repo rate, also known as the

purchase agreement rate, is the interest rate charged by the RBI from commercial banks on the money it lends to them. So when it is reduced, banks often pass on the benefits to the consumers.

The RBI Governor said the financial year begins on an anxious note for the global economy and the central bank is keeping an eye on inflation risks emerging from global uncertainties. This comes days after the Donald Trump administration in the US imposed reciprocal tariffs on exports from India.

Trump’s Global Tariffs Kick In, 104% on China

• Donald Trump's "explosive" tariffs on 60 countries which he deems the "worst offenders" have come into effect

• The latest phase of the US president's sweeping global tariffs includes 104% duties on goods from China, the world's biggest exporter

Indian Woman's Harrowing Experience at U.S. Airport

Frisked by Male Officer, Detained for 8 Hours

An Indian woman recently shared her troubling experience with US airport authorities, claiming she was detained for eight hours over a portable charger found in her carry-on luggage. Despite eventually being released, her entire luggage was confiscated, prompting concerns about the treatment of Indian travelers in the US.

“They let me and my friend go after 8 hours of nonsense and not finding anything. They still kept the whole luggage bag,” she posted online, expressing frustration and calling attention to how Indians abroad can feel “powerless.”

According to the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), portable chargers or power banks with lithium-ion batteries must be placed in carry-on bags, not in checked luggage. The woman insisted she had followed

Trump Tariffs on Pharma May Hit India

Washington: Continuing his economic onslaught, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Washington is planning to announce a "major" tariff on pharmaceutical imports soon. India's pharmaceuticals sector, one of the most dependent domestic industries on trade with America, could be significantly impacted by the move. Trump’s planned tariffs on pharmaceutical imports could severely impact India’s pharma sector, which exports $8.7 billion worth of drugs to the US. Indian companies like Sun Pharma and Dr Reddy’s, heavily reliant on the US market, may face revenue losses and operational challenges.

Elon Musk Calls Trump Advisor a 'Moron'

So far, there has been no response from the Ministry of External Affairs or the US Embassy in India. For now, Chaturvedi’s words hang heavy: “Especially when you aren’t even allowed to make a phone call to anyone in India.”

this rule, making the authorities’ reaction appear excessive. This incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of international travelers in the US. Indian nationals, in particular, have increasingly reported incidents of mistreatment during immigration checks and deportations, including being shackled. These issues are being reported more frequently in the context of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration.

Although India is not on the list of 43 countries targeted in former President Donald Trump’s restrictive immigration proposal, neighboring countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bhutan are included. Nevertheless, Indian travelers seem to be experiencing the ripple effects of stricter immigration policies and heightened border security. The case has added to growing concerns about racial profiling and biased treatment of Indian citizens in the US, especially as incidents like these may discourage international travel and tarnish the perception of safety and fairness in US immigration enforcement.

Washington: Elon Musk on Tuesday described Peter Navarro, a senior White House trade advisor, as "truly a moron" and "dumber than a sack of bricks" in a growing rift over Donald Trump's tariff policy. Musk, a key aide to the president, has signaled his opposition to the tariffs, and the Tesla CEO hit out after Navarro described his electric vehicle company as "not a car manufacturer" but "a car assembler." Trump's new tariffs on imports have roiled markets as fears of a global recession rise.

New Delhi: Tahawwur Rana, an accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is being brought to India in a special plane after he exhausted his legal options in the US, sources have said. The plane would need refuelling and is expected to touch down tonight or early tomorrow. This comes after the US Supreme Court rejected Rana's petition, requesting a stay on his extradition to India. "The application for stay addressed to The Chief Justice and referred to the Court is denied," the Supreme Court order on Monday said.

IT'S BLACKMAIL

China will fight to the end : Escalating Trade War

Beijing has denounced U.S. President Donald Trump's latest threat to impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese goods, calling it "blackmail" and vowing to retaliate. The move follows China’s announcement of a 34% tariff on U.S. imports last week, prompting Trump to demand a reversal within 24 hours or face further duties.

If enacted, the total levies on Chinese imports to the U.S. could reach 104% this year, intensifying a trade war that has already shaken global

BRIEF NEWS

U.S. Court Rejects Rana’s Final Plea Against Extradition

The US Supreme Court has denied 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana's last application seeking a stay on his extradition to India, moving him closer to being handed over to Indian authorities to face justice. The three-day attacks on hotels, a train station and a Jewish center in Mumbai in which 166 people were killed began on November 26, 2008. India says Pakistan-based Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba orchestrated the attacks. Pakistan's government denies being involved.

Trump: U.S. Holding Nuclear Talks with Iran

The US and Iran will hold "direct talks" over a possible nuclear deal on Saturday, says American President Donald Trump. The meeting has also been confirmed by Iran's foreign minister, who said the talks would be "indirect" but could be "as much an opportunity as... a test". Trump - who unilaterally pulled his country out of a previous deal with Iran during his first presidency - said discussions would be at "very high level".

Asian Stocks Bounce Back Despite Trump Tariff Threat

New Delhi: Stock markets in the AsiaPacific region seem to regain some calm after Monday's "bloodbath" amid fears about worsening consumer finances following US President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs. Japan's Nikkei, South Korea's Kospi, and Australia's ASX 200 all opened in green on Tuesday morning, although they only regained a fraction of yesterday's mega losses. Tokyo's Nikkei index jumped nearly 6 per cent in early trade on Tuesday after plunging an eye-watering 7.8 per cent the previous day. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index was up 5.81 percent, or 1,809.92 points, to 32,946.50 yen, while the broader Topix index gained 6.20 percent, or 141.82 points, to 2,430.48 yen.

markets. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index plunged 13.2% on Monday, marking its worst day since the Asian financial crisis. China’s Commerce Ministry criticized the U.S. approach as a “mistake on top of a mistake,” but emphasized its willingness to engage in dialogue. “There are no winners in a trade war,” it stated, reaffirming China's stance against what it describes as U.S. "unilateral bullying."

The Chinese government has signaled resilience, with state media asserting that while U.S. tariffs will have an impact, “the sky won't fall.” Since the trade war began in 2017, China claims it has withstood U.S. pressure and continued to grow.

Economists are skeptical about the effectiveness of more U.S. tariffs.

Xu Tianchen of the Economist Intelligence Unit noted that China could retaliate by halting U.S. agricultural purchases and expanding export controls, especially in strategic materials.

As tensions rise, both sides appear locked in a high-stakes standoff with no quick resolution in sight.

U.S. Quietly Revokes Student Visas at Top Universities

US immigration authorities have revoked a spate of student visas for foreign nationals at major colleges including Harvard, Tufts and Stanford, in a growing number of cases that have raised concern among campus officials. The recent cancellations - often discovered by schools only after federal immigration records are updated - have affected both students and recent graduates, according to statements over the past several days from colleges across the country.

`The moves come amid broader efforts by the Trump administration to tighten oversight of international students, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying last month that 300 or more such visas had been canceled.

Top Court Rules on Governor's Powers in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi: In a massive win for the MK Stalin-led Tamil Nadu government, the Supreme Court today ruled that Governor RN Ravi's decision to withhold assent to 10 key Bills was "illegal" and "arbitrary".

The court ruled that the Governor cannot reserve Bills for the President after withholding assent.

"The action of the Governor to reserve the 10 bills for the President is illegal and arbitrary. Thus, the action is set aside. All actions taken by the Governor thereto for the 10 bills are set aside. These Bills shall be deemed to be cleared

from the date it was re-presented to the Governor," the bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan said. The court said Governor Ravi did not act in "good faith".

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief MK Stalin described the verdict as "historic". "It's a big victory not just for Tamil Nadu but for all Indian states. DMK will continue to struggle for and win state autonomy and federal polity," he said.

The Governor, the court said, should have cleared the Bills when they were re-presented to him after being passed by the Assembly again.

Top Court

Backs Trump on Deportations

The US Supreme Court has cleared the way for President Donald Trump to use a rarely-invoked wartime powers law to rapidly deport alleged gang members - for now. A lower court had temporarily blocked the deportation of alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador on 15 March, ruling that the actions under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act needed further scrutiny. Trump has alleged that the migrants were members of the Tren de Aragua gang "conducting irregular warfare" against the US and could therefore be removed under the Act. While the administration is claiming the ruling as a win, the justices mandated that deportees must be given a chance to challenge their removal.

Wall Street Plunges, Trump Promises "Amazing" Turnaround

The S&P 500 dropped 4.8 per cent in its biggest loss since 2020. The tech-rich Nasdaq plummeted 6.0 per cent and the Dow Jones 4.0 per cent.

Wall Street led a global markets bloodbath Thursday as countries around the world reeled from President Donald Trump's trade war, while the White House insisted the US economy will emerge victorious.

The S&P 500 dropped 4.8 per cent in its biggest loss since 2020. The tech-rich Nasdaq plummeted 6.0 per cent and the Dow Jones 4.0 per cent.

Trump dismissed the turmoil, insisting to reporters as he left for a weekend at his Florida golf resorts, that stocks will "boom."

The 78-year-old president says he wants to make the United States free from reliance on foreign manufacturers, in a massive economic reshaping that he likened to a medical procedure.

"It's what is expected," he said of the market reaction. "The patient was very sick. The economy had a lot of problems."

"It went through an operation. It's going to be a booming economy. It's going to be amazing."

Amid howls of protest abroad and from even some of Trump's Republicans, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick urged patience.

"Let Donald Trump run the global economy. He knows what he's doing," Lutnick said on CNN.

"You've got to trust Donald Trump in the White House."

WTO: Trump Tariffs May Cut Global Trade by 1% in 2025

US President Donald Trump's worldwide tariff salvo could lead to an overall contraction of around 1 percent in global merchandise trade volumes this year, the WTO chief warned Thursday.

PM Modi Meets Bangladesh's M Yunus After Regime Change

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Muhammad Yunus, chief advisor of Bangladesh's interim government, on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. This marks their first meeting since Yunus took charge following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s government in August last year. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval were also present. The meeting comes at a crucial time as Bangladesh strengthens ties with China, a development India is monitoring closely. Relations between Delhi and Dhaka have soured since the Awami League’s fall, with former PM Sheikh Hasina fleeing to India. India has raised concerns over reported attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, while Dhaka insists it is an internal matter.

Tensions further escalated after Yunus’s recent remarks on India’s Northeast states during his visit to China. In a video, Yunus referred to the seven Northeastern states as "landlocked" and described Bangladesh as their "guardian of the ocean," suggesting the region could serve as an extension of China’s economy.

Relations between Delhi and Dhaka have taken a frosty turn since the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government was overthrown after a nationwide movement

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly condemned the statement, calling it "offensive." He highlighted India’s strategic vulnerability at the Chicken’s Neck corridor, a narrow stretch in West Bengal connecting the Northeast to the rest of the country. Sarma emphasized the need to strengthen railway and road networks to reduce

Why Google, Amazon Warned H-1B Holders Not to Leave US

Washington: Thousands of immigrant tech workers in the U.S., including many Indians, face uncertainty due to President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies. Major tech firms like Google and Amazon have reportedly advised their H-1B visa employees against traveling abroad, fearing they may not be allowed to return, The Washington Post reports. Denial rates for high-skilled visas may rise, as seen during Trump’s first term. There is also concern that efforts to end automatic U.S. citizenship for those born in the country could leave future children of H-1B holders stateless.

The H-1B visa program allows U.S. companies to hire skilled foreign workers, with 65,000 visas granted annually through a lottery. Indians receive the most H-1Bs, followed by Chinese and Canadians. The tech industry relies heavily on immigrants—over half of U.S. startups valued at $1 billion or more were founded by immigrants.

Executives at major firms like Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia are also immigrants.

However, Trump’s policies threaten this workforce, potentially impacting America’s ability to compete with China in advanced technologies like AI. Lawyers report growing anxiety among H-1B workers, with many carrying documentation at all times. Some employees have canceled travel plans to India, fearing re-entry denial. Amazon had the highest number of H-1B approvals in 2024, followed by Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Apple. Meanwhile, green card processing delays are worsening, even affecting prominent figures like Aravind Srinivas, CEO of AI startup Perplexity, who has waited three years for residency.

Although Trump has not announced plans to end the H-1B program, the issue remains divisive, with figures like Elon Musk supporting skilled immigration while some Republicans push for more American-born tech workers.

dependence on this corridor and explore alternative routes to integrate the region better with mainland India. He warned that Yunus’s remarks reflected deeper strategic concerns, stressing that provocative statements must not be ignored.

Earlier, on March 26, PM Modi wrote to Yunus, extending greetings on Bangladesh’s Independence Day. In his letter, Modi reaffirmed the shared history of the Bangladesh Liberation War and India’s commitment to fostering peace, stability, and prosperity through mutual respect and cooperation.

Global Markets See Mega Tariff Shock, Trump Says

Medicine Working

New Delhi — Asian stock markets plunged on Monday following U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff stance, sparking fears of a global recession. The market crash came as Trump defended the tariffs, claiming countries were “dying to make a deal” and insisting any stock slump would be temporary. In early trading, Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 7.35%, Seoul’s Kospi fell 4.8%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index nosedived 9.28%. Shanghai shed 4.21%, Singapore’s Straits Times lost 7.37%, and Australia’s top 200 stocks fell 6%. Taiwan halted trading after a 9.8% plunge. Indian indices were also expected to open sharply lower.

The sell-off followed steep drops in U.S. futures, with S&P 500 down 4.31% and Nasdaq plunging 5.45%. Nearly $6 trillion has been wiped off global stock values since Trump’s tariff announcement last Wednesday.

Oil prices also slumped, with Brent at $63.46 per barrel

Trump denied on Sunday that he was intentionally engineering a selloff and insisted he could not foresee market reactions, saying he would not make a deal with other countries unless trade deficits were solved.

and U.S. crude at $59.94. Safe-haven assets surged, pushing Treasury futures up sharply and pricing in potential U.S. interest rate cuts by May. Yields on 10-year Treasuries fell to 3.897%, while the dollar dropped 0.9% against the yen and 1.2% against the Swiss franc.

Despite market turmoil, the Trump administration remains firm on tariffs. Analysts warn the ongoing trade war could tip the global economy into recession. JPMorgan placed the recession risk at 60% and predicts the Federal Reserve may cut rates at every meeting through January 2025.

Gold prices fell 0.7% to $3,013 an ounce amid the broader selloff. CNBC’s Jim Cramer warned of a potential crash reminiscent of 1987’s “Black Monday,” depending on Trump’s next move. As earnings season approaches, analysts expect fewer corporate forecasts and shrinking profit margins due to rising costs.

Rs. 20 Lakh Crore Wiped Out in Seconds as Trump Tariffs Hit Indian Markets

US President Donald Trump's tariffs have unleashed chaos across the globe, plunging the Indian equity markets to their 10-month low and wiping out investor wealth of over Rs 20 lakh crore within seconds. Sensex opened nearly 4,000 points lower, sliding over 3.5%

since its last trading session, while Nifty tanked over 1,000 points this morning. The crash follows a massive sell-off in Asian equities, panicked by Trump's radical policies, and US futures pointing at significant losses when it resumes trading this evening. European markets too have slumped as panic selling continued.

The tariffs - billed as the harbinger of a "golden period" for US industries - seek to undo trade practices that President Trump believes have been unfair. The tariffs are country-specific and go as high as 50%. The rate announced for India is 26%, which has set off fears among exporters and traders, in addition to a 10% baseline duty applied to all nations.

Judge K P George, a prominent Indian-American elected official, was arrested Friday on two felony charges of money laundering, linked to allegations of wire fraud and falsifying a campaign finance report.

George, a Democrat serving since 2018 and re-elected in 2022, was booked into county jail around 3:30 p.m. and released on a $20,000 bond. He is accused of laundering between $30,000 and $150,000. While talking about his dream directors, Hrithik first mentioned his father, Rakesh Roshan, who launched him in Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai in 2000, saying that working with his father was a dream that came true early in his career.

The actor then spoke about how much he admires Nolan, calling him one of his favourite directors, and admitted that he hopes to work with him someday.

SCRIPT Doesn’t Matter

Ram Gopal Varma

The well-renowned filmmaker known for changing the course of Indian cinema with his raw, hard-hitting films, Ram Gopal Varma recently featured on Komal Nahta’s Game Changers podcast. The director spoke about his journey from being an engineer to becoming a filmmaker, his love for experimenting with new genres and how he doesn’t believe in having a bound script. In an insightful conversation with Komal Nahta, when Ram Gopal Varma was asked about his spontaneity on the idea of making a film without a script in place. Varma said, “See, if you take the example of Satya, there was no script at all. I have some kind of guts, like- let's start shooting, and we kept changing the scenes in between shoots,” Varma revealed. Emphasizing on why he doesn’t believe in writing a script, and improvising fresh ideas, he said, “Honestly, I don't believe in the

Chitrangda Singh: Talent Has No Gender

Chitrangda Singh is having a great start to the year. It began with Khakee: The Bengal Chapter this week and is currently shooting for the Nawazuddin Siddiquistarrer Raat Akeli Hai 2. The Honey Trehan directorial venture is the sequel to the critically acclaimed 2020 film. The first instalment was a taut murder mystery that kept audiences guessing until the end. While details about the sequel remain under wraps, Singh teases, “The world of Raat Akeli Hai is dark and twisted, and this time, we’re taking things a notch higher. Expect more intrigue and secrets.”

The actor claims that the role is so intense that it often takes time to get in and out of it. Singh shares that sometimes music helped her get into the zone. “It’s the first time that I’ve felt I don’t want to be on set because the story consumes you until you are done. It does take a toll on you

importance of a script.”

Commenting on his style of filmmaking, Ram Gopal Varma spoke about the risks and challenges one faces when he follows this style of filmmaking. The filmmaker said, “I'll tell you something that could have gone very wrong in Satya, but it went right, that's a different story. Kallu Mama holds a gun to Satya when Satya comes running away. I suddenly thought, and was thinking of killing the Chandrakant Mule, that's Makarand Deshpande's character. I called Makarand, "Makarand, where are you?" He said, "Sir, I'm at home." So, I said, "Why don't you come to the set? I'm thinking of killing your character in this scene." So, he came, and the camera rolled, and the scene was shot.”

Downside of RGV's filmmaking style

The director spoke about the downsides of his style of filmmaking. Working without a bound script can go wrong. The director cited an example of how Satya may have been a very different film if luck was not in his side. Ram Gopal Varma said, ”If Makarand was on another shoot that day, it's possible that I wouldn't have been able to do that scene.”

The entire episode of Komal Nahta’s Game Changers podcast with Ram Gopal Varma is a true masterclass and a deep dive in filmmaking. Script selection, new age marketing, the differences in OTT and Cinema and many more such topics were discussed with great depth and insights.

Women Aren’t Just Victims or Vamps

Shabana Azmi on Dabba Cartel:

as you’ve been in that zone. Sometimes certain kinds of music [helped me] get into it and stay [there],” she explained. Singh shares that she is thrilled to break the stereotype and experiment with characters that people least expect from her. She refused to bend to the pressure and play bold characters. When asked how she managed to break into the maledominated business, Singh says that she doesn’t like to “cry woman” when she doesn’t get her way. “If you’re trying to get into a level-playing field, you have to be ready to give that much. Your work should speak for it, not your gender. You can’t have [success] faster just because you’re a woman. I’m all for equal opportunities. Talent doesn’t have gender. [Playing the] woman card is embarrassing because you are in a male-dominated world and you know it’s the fight,” she adds.

Rich praise has been a frequent feature in Shabana Azmi’s career. It’s not surprising then that the actor’s latest release, Dabba Cartel, continues to be appreciated over a month after it began streaming. “The response I’m personally receiving is overwhelming,” she exclaims.

With Dabba Cartel, director Hitesh Bhatia has given us an unusual crime drama where five women—portrayed by Azmi, Jyotika, Nimisha Sajayan, Shalini Pandey and Anjali Anand—ingeniously run a drug cartel under the guise of a food delivery service. Azmi shares, “The answer to its success lies in its writing. Plus, the director was clear in his vision. Also, a special thumbs up to Shibani [Akhtar, creator] who didn’t ask for favours just because she is Farhan’s [Akhtar, producer] wife.” Tell her it’s being referred to as the Indian version of Breaking Bad, and she says, “I haven’t seen Breaking Bad. So, I can’t comment.”

Lawrence H Summers, a Harvard professor who worked with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, pointed out today's stock market fall was probably the worst experience in the last five years. Fed Chair: Tariffs May Raise Inflation

Arlington: US tariffs will likely cause inflation to rise and growth to slow, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Friday, also warning of an "elevated" risk of higher unemployment. "It is now becoming clear that the tariff increases will be significantly larger than expected," Jerome Powell told an event in Virginia. Jerome Powell spoke just minutes after Trump posted on social media, urging him to cut interest rates immediately.

US President Donald Trump has granted TikTok a second 75-day extension to comply with a law that requires the hugely popular video app to either sell its US operation or face a ban in the country.

Worst week for US stocks since Covid crash as China hits back on tariffs

Stock market turmoil deepened on Friday, as China hit back at tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump, raising the likelihood of an extended trade war and damage to the global economy.

All three major stock indexes in the US plunged more than 5%, with the S&P 500 dropping almost 6%, capping the worst week for the US stock market since 2020. In the UK, the FTSE 100 plunged almost 5% - its steepest fall in five years, while Asian markets also dropped and exchanges in Germany and France faced similar declines.

Trump, who has vowed to remake the global trade order, dismissed concerns about the market shock, noting that the US labour market is strong.

"Hang tough," he urged his followers on social media. "We can't lose."

The global stock market has lost trillions in value since Trump announced sweeping new 10% import taxes on goods from every country, with products from dozens of countries, including key trading partners such as China, the European Union and Vietnam, facing far higher rates.

Analysts say the moves, some of which are due to go into effect as soon as Saturday, amount to the biggest tax increase in the US since 1968. They expect the measures to lead to a contraction in trade, and have warned they could drive many countries into an economic recession.

Immigration Support Disrupted as DHS Suspends USCIS

Ombudsman Office

WASHINGTON, DC- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has placed all staff from the Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman on 60-day administrative leave as of March 21, 2025—effectively halting operations. Two other DHS oversight offices—the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties and the Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman— were similarly affected. Though not formally shut down, experts view this move as a step toward restructuring or closure.

Created by the Homeland Security Act of 2002, the CIS Ombudsman helps resolve individual cases with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), identifies recurring problems, and recommends process improvements.

DHS claims these oversight bodies hinder immigration enforcement and says it aims to streamline operations with a greater focus on border security. However, immigration advocates counter that USCIS primarily handles benefits, not enforcement. They argue that removing oversight harms accountability and transparency. The suspension directly impacts immigrants who have depended on the Ombudsman for help with stalled or mishandled applications, including H-1B workers, international students seeking OPT, and green card applicants. In 2023, the office resolved around 30,000 cases, per its annual report. With staff on leave, pending cases may go unaddressed, and no plan has been announced for handling new requests. Immigrants may now have to turn to congressional offices or advocacy groups for assistance. Critics, including lawmakers, warn that eliminating independent oversight threatens the integrity of the immigration system and leaves vulnerable applicants without a critical support channel.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Massachusetts, the nation's largest Muslim civil liberties group, has expressed concern. Executive Director Tahirah Amtul-Wadud warns that even U.S. citizens may have their devices searched or seized. Refusing a search may result in being detained until compliance is given.

Amid a nationwide crackdown on immigration, legal visa holders and permanent residents are increasingly being stopped at U.S. airports and border crossings. Senator Villivalam Pushes for Cultural, Religious School Calendars

SPRINGFIELD, IL —State Senator Ram Villivalam is leading an initiative to help schools better plan major academic and athletic events by providing calendar dates that reflect when portions of the student body may be absent due to cultural or religious observances.

“Illinois is home to many diverse communities, which means students may be absent at various times throughout the year for cultural or religious reasons,” said Villivalam (D-Chicago). “No student should have to choose between their

faith or culture and participating in an important school event. Providing schools with this information is essential.”

Currently, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) offers guidance on attendance days, holidays, and other calendar-related issues. Under Senate Bill 1616, ISBE would be required to publish and distribute a list of days during the school year when some students may be absent for cultural or religious reasons.

The measure does not mandate school closures or excused absences for these dates, but it would aid school districts in more thoughtful scheduling of significant events.

“Equipping schools with this information allows for better planning, streamlines administrative processes, and ensures our youth don’t have to miss meaningful moments in their education or extracurricular activi-ties,” Villivalam added. Senate Bill 1616 passed the Senate on Friday and now moves to the House for further consideration.

USCIS Quietly Tightens Marriage Green Card Process Across Multiple Forms

WASHINGTON, DC- The United States Customs and Immigration Services (USCIS) has quietly implemented significant changes to the marriage-based green card application process by updating three key immigra-tion forms. These updates affect how applicants must complete and submit Form I-485 (Adjustment of Status), Form I-129F (Fiancé(e) Visa), and Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative).

Key Changes

Effective January 20, 2025, USCIS introduced the following updates across all three forms. While these changes were initially meant to take effect immediately, a grace period was granted due to public feed-back. Compliance with these updates will be mandatory after each form’s respective expiration date:

• End of Combined Payments Applicants must now submit separate payments for each form. Combined payments will no longer be ac-cepted and may result in outright rejection.

• Mandatory Selection of Processing

Type

Applicants must clearly indicate whether the beneficiary intends to pursue adjustment of status or consular processing. Leaving this section blank or selecting both may lead to processing delays or rejection.

• Required Medical Exam Submission Form I-693 (Report of Immigration Medical Examination and Vaccination Record) must now be submitted at the

time of filing. USCIS will no longer request it later during processing.

• COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement Removed

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is no longer required with the I-693 medical form.

Each form has a specific date after which only the updated edition will be

Junior League Launches National Campaign to Promote Volunteerism

NEW YORK, NY – As National Volunteer Month kicks off this April, the Association of Junior Leagues Inter-national (AJLI) invites individuals nationwide to take part in its “Jump In & Join” campaign. This initiative encourages civic engagement, fosters meaningful connections, and highlights the transformative power of volunteerism.

Backed by insights from experts like U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, the campaign underscores how community involvement boosts life satisfaction and longevity. In My Parting Prescription for

America, Dr. Murthy emphasized that as civic institutions decline, many feel disconnected—but service can bridge that gap, restoring a sense of purpose and belonging.

Junior Leagues across the country are rallying communities to connect

with service-based organizations. Volunteering, they say, is more than giving—it’s about personal growth and creating positive change.

“Through ‘Jump In & Join,’ we invite people to experience how powerful volunteering can be,” said AJLI CEO Melanie Schild. She points to research, including studies by the Mayo Clinic, showing that volunteering enhances both mental and physical well-being.

This campaign extends beyond The Junior League, urging involvement from all corners of the service community.

“Volunteering is an investment in yourself and your community,” Schild said. “Together, we can turn passion into action and build a stronger future.”

Trump’s Tariffs Push Nation Toward Recession,

Says Congressman Krishnamoorthi

SCHAUMBURG, IL — Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi issued the following statement today in response to President Trump’s announcement of his so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs:

“Donald Trump’s blanket tariffs amount to a tax on working families, all to fund tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. These latest so-called ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs are reckless and self-destructive. At a time when small businesses are struggling to stay afloat and families are working hard to put food on the table, this policy

inflicts unnecessary financial pain on Illinois and communities across the country.

Don’t be fooled—these tariffs do nothing to strengthen our economy or national security. Instead, they isolate the United States on the world stage, alienate our allies, and embolden our adversaries. Worst of all, they force seniors and working families to shoulder the burden through higher prices on everyday goods. I urge all Americans to join me in demanding that President Trump end these disastrous tariff policies be-fore he plunges our country into a recession.”

accepted:

• Form I-485 (Adjustment of Status): Only the 1/20/25 edition will be accepted starting April 3, 2025.

• Form I-129F (Fiancé(e) Visa): Only the 1/20/25 edition will be accepted starting May 1, 2025.

• Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative): The 4/1/24 edition remains valid but now includes additional warnings about marriage fraud and reminders regarding consular processing options.

How Trump’s New Tariffs Could Impact Prices in New Jersey

NEW JERSEY — President Donald Trump this week unveiled sweeping new tariffs, including a 10% import tax on goods from all countries and steeper rates on dozens more. Dubbed "reciprocal tariffs," the move is aimed at promoting domestic manufacturing and countering what the White House calls unfair foreign trade practices. These tariffs, ranging from 10% to 46%, are set to begin April 9, raising the U.S. average tariff rate to 22%—the highest since 1909.

Economists warn the move could significantly raise prices on necessities like food, clothing, and energy, disproportionately impacting lowerincome Americans. A Yale Budget Lab study suggests households earn-ing around $43,000 could see a 4% drop in disposable income. In New Jersey, where 9.7% of people live below the poverty line, the impact could be especially harsh. Meanwhile, Wall Street reacted sharply, with the S&P 500 dropping 3.3% and Nasdaq falling 4.5%. Critics, including Senator Andy Kim, condemned the decision as reckless. Supporters like Congressman Chris Smith praised Trump’s tough stance on China and online retailers. Congress may still act, as bipartisan opposition grows. Analysts warn the tariffs could trigger a global recession, with long-term economic consequences.

New Jersey Immigrant Detained During Routine Visit for Citizenship Paperwork

Karim Daoud was informed that there had been a mistake and that he needed to report to ICE, he went to the office to clear things up,but once at the Newark ICE facility he was apprehended

NEWARK, NJ- A New Jersey community is rallying around a beloved resident of 20 years—an Egyptian im-migrant on the legal path to U.S. citizenship— who was inexplicably detained by U.S. Immigration and Cus-toms Enforcement (ICE) last month. The man, Karim Daoud, is married to an American citizen and has long called Flemington home. According to family friend Rachel Mascitelli, Daoud was detained on March 12 after showing up for what was supposed to be a routine appointment to renew his work-authorization documents. Mascitelli has since created a social media campaign and launched an online fundraiser to support the family.

“When he arrived at the Intensive Supervision Appearance Program office, he was informed that there had been a mistake and that he needed to report to

ICE,” Mascitelli wrote on the "Free Karim" Facebook page. “He went to the office willingly to clear things up, but once at the Newark ICE facility, Karim was appre-hended.”

Daoud—who has no criminal record and is a devoted father—was told he would be deported. Mascitelli said he was nearly transferred across the country to California, a move that was halted at the last minute thanks to intervention by U.S.

Senator Andy Kim.

Despite that reprieve, Daoud remains in a detention facility more than three weeks later. His wife, Jenn Metz, has been tirelessly advocating for his release, reaching out to lawmakers while also caring for their children and visiting Daoud whenever possible.

“The journey toward citizenship has been long, hard, and full of paperwork,” Mascitelli told NJ Advance Media. “But Karim has followed every step of the process.” “Karim is not a criminal. He has no criminal history at all,” she wrote on the Facebook page. “He has lived in the United States for more than 20 years, and in those 20 years, he has always worked, paid taxes and helped his community in every way he can. He deserves to be with his family. They deserve to have him.”

The GoFundMe set up for the family had raised nearly $67,000 .

CA Lawmakers Approve Bill to Increase Punishment for Child Torture

SACRAMENTO, CA — In a major move to protect children, the California Assembly Public Safety Committee has unanimously approved Assembly Bill 1094, authored by Democrat Jasmeet Bains.

The bill seeks to raise the minimum sentence for child torture from 7 years to 20 years, with the possibility of life in prison. Currently, offenders can be eligible for parole after just 7 years, regardless of the victim’s age or the severity of the abuse. Bains argues this fails victims, many of whom are still healing when their abusers are up for parole. The bill has received strong support from law enforcement groups, including the California District Attorneys Association and the State Sheriffs Association. Citing the case of a 10-year-old torture survivor, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office stressed the need for tougher penalties. Bains, who has worked with abuse victims, says stronger sentencing reflects the lifelong trauma inflicted by such crimes. AB 1094 now heads to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Kris Singh Leads Holtec into Strategic Energy Partnership with India

JUPITER, FL – Two decades after the landmark India-U.S. civil nuclear deal, ties between the two nations are deepening with a major development: the U.S. Department of Energy has approved Holtec Interna-tional to design and build small modular reactors (SMRs) in India. This marks a significant step in U.S.-India nuclear collaboration. At the center is Holtec’s founder and CEO, Dr. Kris Singh, an Indian-born engineer whose journey spans Ranchi University’s BIT Sindri to the University of Pennsylvania. Since founding Holtec in 1986 in Camden, New Jersey, Singh has led the company into global markets, including India, Brazil, the U.K., and Japan. Holtec’s SMR-300, now approved

for India, offers a safer, cost-effective nuclear energy option.

Singh invested $312 million into Camden’s Krishna P. Singh Technology Campus in 2017, boosting local revitalization. However, Holtec has faced controversies, including a $5 million settlement in 2024 over false tax credit filings and earlier penalties from federal agencies.

Beyond business, Singh supports education and health through his KPS Foundation and the Singh Center for Nanotechnology at Penn. He lives in Florida with his wife Martha Trimble. Their children, Amy and Kris Jr., have attracted public interest, with Kris Jr. known for his luxury car collection.

Immigration Forms Revised: Only Male or Female Accepted by USCIS

WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced it will no longer offer a third gender option on its forms, reversing a policy introduced under the Biden administration. Effective April 2, 2025, USCIS will now recognize only two biological sexes — male and female — aligning with a re-cent executive order stating that sex is immutable and determined at birth.

Under the new guidance, an applicant’s sex will be based on what is listed on their birth certificate issued at or near the time of birth. If the certificate shows a nonbinary or undefined sex marker, USCIS may con-sider secondary evidence such as medical or government records to classify the applicant. This change eliminates the previous option of selecting an “X” gender marker, which was introduced to accommodate nonbinary and transgender individuals. Those who previously submitted forms with an “X” may see their documents updated to reflect a binary sex designation.

USCIS stated the move ensures immigration policy aligns with biological reality and national security priori-ties. Applicants should now use the sex listed on their original birth certificate to avoid delays. Secondary evidence may be required if the certificate lists a nonbinary marker. The change applies to all applications pending or filed on or after April 2, 2025.

IndiaCon at USC: Bridging Borders, Shaping Futures

LOS ANGELES, CA – IndiaCon, a student-led initiative at the University of Southern California, drew over 250 attendees—including entrepreneurs, investors, policy experts, and students—with the goal of explor-ing and strengthening US-India economic, technological, and cultural ties. Held on January 25, the event featured dynamic sessions highlighting India’s rapid growth and global influ-ence.

A key panel, India’s Leap Forward, featured Dr. Srikar Reddy, India’s Consul General in San Francisco, and business leader Gunjan Bagla discussing cross-border collaboration. In Generics to Global Health, experts Vik Thapar, Ray Mathoda, and Neil Badlani explored healthcare insights from both nations. Mathoda noted, “If the goal of health care is to keep people healthy... the U.S. has a lot to learn from Indian culture and practices.”

Another panel, Back Office to Innovation Hub, spotlighted India’s entrepreneurial transformation. Investor Sumant Mandal shared, “Not too long ago, I had to convince the parents of a founder in India that their son’s marital prospects wouldn’t be hurt by choosing startups.”

Visa Hurdles to Career Triumphs brought personal reflections on the immigrant journey from leaders like Navneet Chugh, who quipped, “Some of my wealthiest clients give up U.S. citizenship for tax reasons. I hope you all leapfrog the green card race.”

Entertainment and sports were also featured, with panels on South Asian women in Hollywood and the rise of cricket in the U.S.

Founded by USC students Tejaswa Gavankar and Raghav Mahajan, IndiaCon aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue. The event also introduced the IndiaCon Scholarship, awarded to biomedical PhD student Nikhil Chaudhari. Mahajan concluded, “India is growing three times faster than the U.S.—whether it’s your next idea, investment, or career move, keeping an eye on India is essential.”

Kamala Harris Issues Blunt Statement: ‘I Predicted This’

LOS ANGELES, CA – In a rare public appearance since her 2024 election loss, former Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the sense of unease gripping the country—hinting at vindication and signaling that she’s not stepping away from public life.

“There’s a lot of fear right now,” Harris told a packed audience at the Leading Women Defined Summit in California on April 4. “There were many things that we knew would happen—many things.”

With a knowing smile and a pause that drew laughter from the crowd, she added, “I’m not here to say, ‘I told you so.’ I swore I wasn’t going to say that.”

But Harris’s message was unmistakable: her voice remains active, and her political future is far from over. “I’m not going anywhere,” she declared.

Though she didn’t mention President Donald Trump by name, the context was clear. The former senator from California—who served as vice president under Joe Biden—has largely remained out of the spotlight since the election but is widely rumored to be considering a 2026 run for California governor.

DACA Recipient Deported After 20 Years in the U.S.

DALLAS, TX- Evenezer Cortez Martinez, a DACA recipient who arrived in the U.S. at age 4, was denied reentry and deported to Mexico on March 23, despite holding valid advance parole.

According to court filings, he traveled to Mexico City on March 20 following his grandfather’s death and attempted to return via Dallas Fort Worth Airport. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers denied his entry, citing a re-moval order issued in absentia on June 11, 2024, and claiming his advance parole was issued in error.

Advocates Plant-Based Cure for Chronic Disease

NEW YORK, NY — Dr. Nandita Shah, physician and founder of SHARAN India (Sanctuary for Health and Re-connection to Animals and Nature), led a day-long seminar focused on whole food plant-based (WFPB) nutrition and its impact on preventing and reversing chronic diseases. She highlighted how conditions like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and heart disease can often be managed—or reversed— through dietary changes.

The event began with a live demo of a dairy-free green smoothie, showcasing the benefits of nutrient-dense, fiber-rich foods over processed ingredients. Dr. Shah discussed how an alkaline diet reduces inflammation and detoxifies the body, while acidic foods like meat, coffee, and processed items promote chronic illness. She debunked myths around sugar, explaining that fat—not sugar—is a major contributor to insulin resistance. WFPB diets, she noted, can help restore insulin sensitivity. Attendees also heard from longtime vegan Rakesh Bhargava, who reversed heart disease through diet. The seminar included tasty plantbased meals and practical guidance for adopting healthier habits. A Q&A covered topics like intermittent fasting, rice, and hydration. The event was sponsored by wellness advocates Suman and Shashi Khanna, with support from Plant Powered Metro New York and World Vegan Vision.

BOSTON, MA- The FBI’s Boston Division is warning property owners and real estate agents about a growing threat: quit claim deed fraud, also known as home title theft. Criminals forge documents to ille-gally transfer property ownership, allowing them to sell homes, take out mortgages, or rent proper-ties—often without the rightful owners’ knowledge. Victims face financial ruin and emotional distress, with some only discovering the crime after the fraudulent sale is completed.

Fraudsters target vacant land or mortgage-free properties by impersonating owners, often using personal information gathered online. Elderly individuals may also be exploited by trusted relatives. These schemes typically involve identity theft, forged documents, and remote sales, making detection difficult. From 2019 to 2023, over 58,000 victims nationwide reported $1.3 billion in losses from real estate fraud, including more than $61 million in New England.

Federal Immigration Agents Arrest 37 in Raid at Washington Roofing Business

BELLINGHAM, WA — Federal immigration agents arrested 37 individuals on Wednesday during a raid at Mt. Baker Roofing, a roofing company located in northern Washington near the Canadian border.

Officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations unit, along with Customs and Border Protection, arrived at the company's warehouse in Bellingham around 7:30 a.m.

“They came in with their guns drawn like we were dangerous criminals,” said employee Tomas Fuerte in Spanish said. “They corralled us into a room at the back of the building. They had a list and pictures of those who were undocumented and took them away.”

According to Fuerte, the detainees were transported on two buses. He said he had never witnessed such a raid in his 12 years working at the company.

ICE spokesperson David Yost confirmed that agents executed a federal search warrant as part of an “on-going criminal investigation into

the unlawful employment of aliens without legal work authorization, in violation of federal law.”

Mt. Baker Roofing issued a statement Wednesday afternoon saying it is “fully cooperating with the author-ities while also ensuring that our employees are treated fairly and respectfully under the law.”

While immigration enforcement activity has fluctuated across administrations, ICE reported 32,809 arrests during the first 50 days of President Donald Trump’s administration — averaging 656 arrests per day, com-pared to a daily average of 311 during the previous 12-month period ending September 30.

Despite these figures, large-scale workplace raids — a hallmark of Trump’s first term and earlier administrations such as that of President George W. Bush — have become less frequent in recent years, with smaller-scale operations occurring sporadically.

Criminal charges against business owners in such cases remain rare, though financial penalties are more common.

Artificial Blood, Real Impact: Dipanjan Pan’s Lifesaving Mission

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA — For trauma patients, especially in remote or conflict zones, timely access to safe blood transfusions can be lifesaving. Blood loss is the leading cause of death for individuals aged 1 to 46, often due to delayed availability of blood.

Dipanjan Pan, professor at Penn State and holder of the Dorothy Foehr Huck & J. Lloyd Chair in Nanomedi-cine, is addressing this urgent issue by developing freeze-dried synthetic blood. Supported by a four-year, $2.7 million NIH grant, his team aims to create an alternative to donated blood, which requires complex storage and logistics.

Pan’s work builds on over a decade of research, including co-developing ErythroMer—an artificial blood product that mimics red blood cells' oxygencarrying ability—with Dr. Allan Doctor of the University of Maryland. Their latest project will further refine synthetic materials and test their effectiveness in animal models.

Collaborators include Doctor, who will study oxygen delivery; Dr. Paul Buehler, who will analyze circulation and distribution; and Dr. Narayana Aluru, who will apply computational modeling to guide development.

Pan, originally from India, earned his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology and completed post-doctoral research at Washington University in St. Louis. His work could revolutionize emergency medicine worldwide.
