A powerful commitment to a different kind of care
2022 ANNUAL REPORT
As I look back at the care provided at Saban Community Clinic last year, I think about all that goes on behind the scenes to make it possible — from administrative efforts, to ongoing facilities upkeep, to planning for our future. The covid-19 pandemic brought even greater clarity to the essential role we play in caring for so many Angelenos. And that inspired us to take a fresh look at how we communicate what we are striving for.
For more than 55 years, Saban Community Clinic has been committed to serving anyone regardless of their circumstances. Today, our approach to whole-person care and standard of excellence extends well beyond basic medical needs. This year we updated our mission, vision, and values to reflect this and honor the people we serve.
Our new mission is to provide outstanding, compassionate care to anyone who needs it. Being patient-centered and delivering personalized care is at the heart of it all. We provide comprehensive, high-quality services for the whole person, understanding all of the factors that impact health and helping each patient navigate their unique situation. It all points to our ultimate vision: to achieve health equity and transform lives in Los Angeles.
Dear friends, colleagues, and partners,
SABAN COMMUNITY CLINIC 2022 ANNUAL REPORT 01
We are changing the healthcare landscape in Southern California, for individuals, families, and entire communities. We do this by living our values. We are empathetic and compassionate, adaptable and resilient. From our welcoming environments, to our high caliber of care, to the efforts we make to be an anti-racist organization, it all comes together in our larger purpose:
Caring for anyone, access for everyone. The well-being of our community depends on it.
I am so proud of how every staff member, volunteer, donor, and partner has embraced this mission. I am humbled by the difference it makes for the communities we support and inspired to grow our reach and the services we provide. Our patients know that Saban is a place invested in their health, that we are here for them at each step. Our entire staff is dedicated to doing the best they can for our patients and for each other. All because we are committed to a different kind of care.

SABAN COMMUNITY CLINIC 2022 ANNUAL REPORT 03
Outstanding,
compassionate care
We think of quality care as more than a phrase — it’s a feeling, a promise to the patients we care for, and a commitment to our colleagues and partners. Quality is a bigger idea than just effective treatment.
It comes from:
Making access easy
Personally connecting with every patient
Creating welcoming, supportive spaces
Becoming a medical home
This is the essence of our mission and the work we do every day. It’s what we continuously invest in.
05 SABAN COMMUNITY CLINIC 2022 ANNUAL REPORT
Making access easy
From the challenges of missing work, needing childcare, or being without transportation, healthcare visits can seem like a luxury for many. We are breaking down those barriers. We’ve expanded our clinic hours, increased the number of appointments available, broadened telehealth services and even covered transportation costs.
Our donors and our role as a teaching facility make this possible. Long-standing relationships with Cedars-Sinai, UCLA, USC, and UC Irvine help address the shortfall of caregivers by tapping into highly trained residents, fellows, and students. We offer walk-in appointments, evening hours and ongoing care for patients recently discharged from the hospital.
There is a level of comfort and convenience for our patients by having everything in one place. Sometimes it takes a lot for someone to get to the doctor. The idea of having to refer them out to another place is a challenge. Being able to have them come back here to meet with the specialist they need is pretty special.”
Dr. Anna Noble Associate Medical Director of Academic Affairs
We also provide vital access to specialty care and other services that many patients otherwise wouldn’t have, including pulmonology, infectious disease, rheumatology, nephrology, cardiology, endocrinology and more.
Accelerating care with our mobile clinic
As part of our broader solutions for those experiencing homelessness, we launched our mobile clinic in June 2022 to bring healthcare to people in transitional housing. Being healthy is an essential part of being ready to move into permanent housing and take the next steps to improve their lives. The mobile clinic enables continuity of care and improved medical outcomes by providing a range of primary dental and medical care services, including chronic disease management for high blood pressure and diabetes, acute care for wounds, testing and treatment for STDs, gender affirming care, and mental health care.
“
Launched in June 2022, our mobile clinic expanded our community partnerships from four transitional housing sites to fourteen.
There are a lot of barriers for our patients. Being able to bring the clinic to them helps us serve so many more people. Showing up in a beautiful mobile clinic that’s made just for them, asking ‘What can I do to help you today?’ makes a huge difference.”

Caregivers who can empathize and take the time to get to know patients are at the heart of our success. We have deepened our commitment to a culture where every patient feels known and heard. We meet them where they are with culturally sensitive and accessible recommendations. Understanding they may not be ready for all steps in their care in their first visit and building trust is key. And our recently implemented ongoing anti-racism training helps ensure we don’t unknowingly perpetuate disparities.
Building stronger connections
We recently implemented a technologyenabled note-taking solution for our physicians to help them strengthen patient relationships. It takes the burden of documentation off the provider and allows them to focus on the patient. Patients know they matter and that we are listening.
Addressing all needs
From gender affirming care, to therapists specializing in treatment for kids and teens, to our pain intervention clinic, to simply making showers available to patients: we recognize the fundamental human needs of everyone we see.
SABAN COMMUNITY CLINIC 2022 ANNUAL REPORT 09
Our environments help patients and staff know this is a place designed with them in mind. We’ve created calming and restful spaces. We added new technology like tablets to support translation and digital touchscreen boards in our exam rooms that showcase 3d diagrams, helping patients better understand treatments and answer questions. And we constantly reassess our approach to make sure we’re supporting everyone.
From high turnover and staff burnout, to rising costs of living, the pandemic put extraordinary, ongoing pressure on healthcare workers and providers like Saban. We are working on all fronts to ensure our staff know how vital they are to everything we do, including:
– A one-time bonus to help with soaring gas prices.
– Developing a comprehensive incentive program for staff at every level, rolling out in early 2023, made possible by a generous grant.
– Building continuing education opportunities into clinician meetings to save staff time.
– Restful lunch and break facilities to help them rejuvenate.
To have happy, healthy patients, our providers must be happy and healthy, too.

SABAN COMMUNITY CLINIC 2022 ANNUAL REPORT
Every interaction with Saban Community Clinic staff impacts patient care.
Becomingamedicalhome
At Saban, we believe preventive care shouldn’t be a luxury. For some patients, realizing they don’t have to be wealthy to be healthy is a mindset shift. We want them to see us as their health home, to know that this is where they can come for care even when they don’t have an urgent issue.
By paying attention to all the factors that impact health—housing, access to food, job stress, mental health, emotional well-being — we provide deeper support. This includes education and essential tools like our state-ofthe-art MyChart system where patients can see test results and connect with providers between visits. We empower patients to take action for their own health and we’re always expanding our services. With a continued increase in demand for mental health services, we created a family health model and hired our first pediatric psychiatrist.
Having a medical home supports the greater good. When our patients are taken care of, they can be good parents, productive workers, and actively participate in their communities and the greater Los Angeles economy.
Chief Medical Officer
When we talk about healthcare, it’s not only the medicine of it. It’s also social — whether it’s housing, food access, transportation, everything is a determinant of health. We work very hard to look at the whole patient, not just the medical aspect.”

Uniting behind ourmission
This has been a year of coming back together and appreciating our community. We are grateful for our donors who helped us through the pandemic, its aftermath and with the growing demands of our community. As we continue to navigate the after-effects on our patients and staff, and strive to expand the geographic areas we serve, this financial support is vital.
Across everything we do for our patients and team, we always put people at the center. Thanks to the generosity of our partners and donors Saban Community Clinic is able to deliver the highest quality care.
Our 46th Annual Dinner Gala was attended by 250 passionate supporters of Saban Community Clinic. Singer, songwriter, and actress Miley Cyrus introduced our 2022 honoree, Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, who was recognized for her unwavering dedication to our cause. This year, the doctors and staff of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, partners of the clinic for more than four decades, were honored with the Lenny Somberg award.
Thank you to Rufus Wainwright and Ava Maybee for making it an unforgettable evening.

Engaging the community in our cause
One of our most popular events, our 33rd annual holiday party, brings joy to our community by way of Santa, Spiderman, and dozens of volunteers. At this year’s event, chaired by Marcia Steere, we passed out gifts to more than 350 Saban kids and families.
Last year, 2,150 bags of essential items were distributed to local families, pediatric patients, and our unhoused neighbors. Since 2018, “Assembly Days,” held throughout the year, have engaged hundreds of volunteers in our pursuit of promoting health and wellness in the community beyond the services we provide at the clinic.
This year, backpacks, bags, and kits — including everything from school supplies to healthy lunches and dental care items — were assembled by nearly a dozen participating companies and organizations, including Endeavor, UTA, CAA, Milken, The Center for Early Education, students from UCLA, and our Young Professionals Committee.
Over $2.5 million was raised in 2022 to provide vital services at no charge to uninsured clients of the clinic. We could not do this without the tireless support of the Friends of Saban Community Clinic and the donors and volunteers who make every one of our events a sold-out success.
