Dear Member,

The 2014-2015 Financial Year Report has been completed, and I am pleased to advise a net profit figure of $5,289,330, which is a small increase on the previous year and another record trading profit for your Club. Members may obtain full details of the annual report via the Club’s website or at Club reception.

I mentioned in my last report that we were close to finalising all relevant issues related to the Hawks on Second site. The Board has resolved to call for Expressions of Interest for the sale of this site and this process commenced at the time of writing this report.

On the Club front we are planning a minor upgrade of the Auditorium in early 2016. The makeover will be mainly cosmetic but designed to bring the décor up to a modern standard. Refurbishment is also planned for all ground floor areas. These areas, although presented well, are in need of a refresh to ensure that we are offering a good standard of finishes to members and their guests. This work will be undertaken progressively throughout 2016.

We are pleased to continue our support for the Adam Gardiner Fund, set up to support those suffering from Amyloidosis. Trisha Gardiner-Wilson, her husband Steven and the rest of their small team work very hard to raise the funds to support the clinic at Westmead Hospital, and we are proud to assist their fundraising efforts.

Also on the support front, the Club continues its support for the Children’s Medical Research Foundation at Westmead Hospital by, again, entering a large contingent into the “Run for Fun” event at Homebush on 1st November. Well done to the staff and family members who participate in this event, and have done for a number of years.

Christmas is almost upon us again and I take this opportunity to wish all our members the very best wishes for the festive season and a happy and healthy 2016.

FOOTBALL REPORT

Season 2015 for the NSW State Cup competition has now concluded, and unfortunately for the Wests Tigers State Cup team this was our worst ever performance in this Grade.

Overall, the team used 44 players in 22 matches and Coach Paul Fletcher was, for the best part of the season, hamstrung in not knowing until game day the composition of the team.

Unfortunately, the NRL squad suffered many injuries, which meant the State Cup squad lost some players that could have bolstered our team.

As stated, the team played 22 competition matches, winning seven, drawing one and losing 14, thus finishing second last. Only one player, M. Bullock, played the maximum 22 games, with C. Rowe playing 21 and J. Drinkwater and J. Luani playing 20.

The team scored 460 points from 86 tries, 57 goals and 2 field goals to 586 against from 108 tries and 77 goals. The leading scorer with 118 was J. Drinkwater followed by C. Rowe with 84. Rowe was also the leading try-scorer with 20.

At the time of writing, it has been announced that Paul Fletcher will not be coaching this team in 2016, and may I sincerely thank Paul for his efforts over the many years that he has been a part of this team.

The Ryde-Eastwood Football Club has again agreed to sponsor the Wests Tigers team for 2016, which is the last year of our current sponsorship agreement.

safer KEEP YOUR LITTLE ONES SAFER THIS SUMMER KIDS’ CORNER

Toddlers are curious by nature and often attracted by water. However, they have little fear or understanding of the possible dangers posed. As they learn to crawl and walk, their ability to access water hazards such as pools, spas, and buckets is greatly increased. Toddlers tend to be ‘top heavy’ and can therefore easily lose balance and fall into bodies of water. Children can drown in as little as a few centimetres of water, so items such as inflatable swimming pools, baths, and nappy buckets all pose a drowning hazard.

According to the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia, 49% of children aged 0-4 that drowned, did so in a swimming pool. The Fitness Edge Swim School recommends that parents and carers take the following precautions to reduce the risk of childhood drowning:

Supervise:

• Ensure constant and active supervision.

• Remain within an arm’s reach of young children, as they can drown quickly and silently.

• Never leave a young child unsupervised; always take your child with you if you have to leave the water area, even if you will only be gone for a short period.

• Don’t expect older children to look after younger siblings. Children have short attention spans and can be easily distracted.

• Nominate a parent or carer to supervise any children near the water when you have visitors.

Reduce the hazard:

• Restrict the child’s access to water through safety barriers such as pool fencing. The legislation surrounding pool fencing differs between the States and Territories of Australia. Contact your local authority or government agency for information on pool

fencing regulations in your area.

• Don’t leave objects near a pool fence that will enable children to climb into a pool, e.g. pot plants and chairs.

• Don‘t leave any gates or doors propped open that might allow children access to a body of water.

• Create a safe play area for children, especially on farms and large properties that are separated from bodies of water such as swimming pools, dams and water troughs.

Let us help you to start your little ones on the road to being water safe and confident. Come and see us in the Swim School and we can teach both you and your little ones the life skill of swimming and water safety.

We have a number of Pre-schooler and Baby positions available in our Swim School. Classes run Monday to Friday from 11-12.30pm.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Dear Member,

Last year I reported a record net profit. I am pleased to announce that we have exceeded that figure to record a net profit after tax of $5,289,330. While only slightly better than last year’s figure the actual trading profit before extraordinary items was about $500,000 higher than last year and is most pleasing, particularly given quieter trading conditions in the last quarter of the financial year.

The year ended June 2015 for the Board and your Club was marked by a continuation of planning meetings to try and determine the best use of the Club’s property. The meetings continue. However, one outcome has been the decision to call for Expressions of Interest for the sale of the Hawks on Second Avenue site. A Development Application for this site was approved over 12 months ago and your Board has considered all options in relation to development, and have finally resolved to go down this path. Members will be advised by way of future journal reports regarding the outcome of this process.

Your Board has also had to consider financial investment strategies in an interest rate environment that is continually declining. The approach for the RELC Board has always been conservative –we are custodians of the Members’ funds. In the past year, whilst maintaining the majority of investment funds in term deposits, your Board has invested some funds in local commercial property. We

empathise with all our members who are also trying to obtain a reasonable investment return on their own funds.

Good financial results don’t just happen. They require strong support from you the member, which we continue to receive, a committed and focused Board of Directors, and a strong management team.

To my fellow Board members a big thank you for your continued support in managing the affairs of your Club on behalf of our Members. Boards of organisations certainly set policy but these must be carried out by management and your Club is fortunate in having a solid and experienced team. Led by G.M. Chris McCarthy and his team of Carl Pozzato (Assistant GM) Joanne Luke (H.R.) Dean Owen (Marketing) Nathan Hawton (Gaming) Martin Westbrook (Beverage, Lisa Kradenian (Functions, Chris Kalligas (The Fitness Edge), and Joanne Furness and Leanne Mooy (Swim School). These senior staff, combined with a great team of long serving and dedicated line managers, as well as friendly and capable staff, make for a successful business. I thank all of them for their efforts on behalf of the Club and you the members.

Every New Year brings new challenges and I’m sure that the current financial year will be no exception. However, with the continual support of our members we can meet those challenges and look forward to another successful year.

Members,

For the last four years I have been able to report to you a record trading profit as part of the Annual Report to members. I am pleased to be able again to report a record profit figure for the last financial year. The profit figure of $5,289,330 is a small increase on the previous year but the underlying trading profit is up about $500,000 on 2013/14.

Good financial results are important but only part of the job of managing your Club for your benefit.

In last year’s report I advised that we proposed to use the funds saved from the repeal of the Carbon tax to invest in new energy savings initiatives. We have just commenced the replacement of the down lights in the function area with new LED globes. At the same time we are also upgrading to LEDs in various other areas throughout the Club in order to completely replace this old technology. We have also embarked on an upgrade to the air conditioning system to the Golden Hawk Restaurant and the Auditorium to link them to the Club’s main air conditioning system. The Restaurant work should be completed in early November while the Auditorium upgrade will be undertaken in early 2016, along with a planned refurbishment of this area.

The refurbishment of the Auditorium, while not extensive, will upgrade the finishes in this area, in keeping with the rest of the Club. We are also finalising plans for upgrading most areas on the ground floor. The refurbishment won’t be major but will, we hope, provide an invigorated look for some areas that are starting to age.

The Club’s Board has resolved to call for Expressions of Interest for the sale of the Hawks on Second Avenue site at Eastwood. This has been a long drawn out process, not only because of the planning options and issues we worked through with Council over a number of years, but also for the Club to determine the best way to proceed with the development of the site. The Club’s initial position and one that we maintained until just recently was to develop the site ourselves. However, with a number of other planning projects on the drawing board related to the main club site at West Ryde, the decision to call for expressions of interest for sale is to allow board and management to devote full attention to the main site, as

NOTICE OF ORDINARY RESOLUTIONS

Notice is hereby given that at the Annual General Meeting of the Club, members will be asked to consider, and if thought fit, pass the following resolutions which are proposed as Ordinary Resolutions:

1. FIRST ORDINARY RESOLUTION

(a) That pursuant to the Registered Clubs Act the members hereby approve and agree to expenditure by the Club in a sum not exceeding $70,000 until the next Annual General Meeting of the Club for the following activities:

i. An annual dinner for Foundation Members and partners;

ii. An annual Appreciation dinner for sub-club Executive Committee Members;

iii. Grants and subsidies to the sub-clubs;

iv. Two free meals and beverages per fortnight for each Life Member of the Club who is not a Director of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Limited (not to exceed $120 for each meal);

v. Presentations to members and other persons acknowledging services deemed by the directors as being of benefit to the Club

The members acknowledge that the benefits in paragraph (a) above are not available to members generally, but only those members who fall within the various categories of membership referred to.

2.

SECOND ORDINARY RESOLUTION

(a) That pursuant to the Registered Clubs Act the members hereby approve and agree to expenditure by the Club in a sum not exceeding $130,000 for the following benefits, professional development and education of directors until the next Annual General Meeting and being:

that will be in the best interest of club members in the long term. We hope this process will be finalised early in 2016.

The Master Plan that was completed in 2014 and additional planning exercises have kept us busy throughout 2015. With the expected completion of the Hawks on Second sale process, the Club will be able to focus more closely on the next planning phase in relation to the Club itself and other local property holdings.

The Club Grants programme for the year ended 31st August 2015 was recently completed with the Club donating nearly $500,000 in various forms to the local community. This amount excludes the support for Rugby League via the Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club, who are the major sponsors of the Wests Tigers State Cup team, and who also contribute heavily to four local junior league clubs.

As always, my thanks to our great management team and also our line staff, led by Assistant General Manager, Carl Pozzato. Experienced, capable and supportive and always looking after the best interests of the Club and its members.

Predictions for 2016

For the last few years I have predicted a sustained period of political stability in the Club industry which had been battered by Federal and State Governments on a number of issues. That prediction has been relatively correct, and while we hope that will continue I’m sure there will always be some politicians with an agenda to keep us on our toes.

And on that note, I acknowledge the ongoing efforts of your Board to keep RELC at the forefront of the industry. This is a difficult job even without industry issues, and President Keith Aggett and the Board always remain focussed on the job at hand.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to another year.

i. The reasonable cost of directors attending the ClubsNSW and Leagues Clubs Australia quarterly and annual general meetings, and the reasonable costs of directors attending formal functions to represent the club, including but not limited to functions and dinners conducted by ClubsNSW, and Leagues Clubs Australia, and including costs associated with the Directors’ partners where attendance is expected and required.

ii. The reasonable cost of directors attending seminars, lectures, trade displays and other similar events as may be determined by the Board from time to time as being of benefit for Club and the education of directors;

iii. The reasonable cost of directors attending or hosting other registered clubs for the purpose of viewing and assessing their facilities and methods of operation, or for the purpose of meeting and exchanging ideas with the governing bodies of those other clubs, provided such attendances are approved by the Board as being necessary for the betterment of the Club;

THIRD ORDINARY RESOLUTION

That the members of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club approve the reclassification of the following properties:

• 77, 95 and 97-99 Ryedale Road, West Ryde from core to non-core properties.

Dated 30th September 2015

By Direction of the Board

C.A. McCarthy - General Manager

NOTES TO MEMBERS

These notes are to be read in conjunction with the proposed Ordinary Resolutions;

1. The First Resolution is to approve benefits which have traditionally been provided in the Club but which are not equally available to all members.

2. The Second Resolution is to approve an amount no greater than $130,000 for the expenditure by the Club in relation to duties performed in or about the Club by directors, and expenditure for directors to attend seminars, lectures, trade displays and other similar events including the Clubs NSW Annual General Meeting and to visit other clubs to enable the Club’s governing body to be kept abreast of current trends and developments, which may have a significant bearing on the nature and way in which the Club conducts its business. This resolution also includes an option for directors to participate in organised intrastate, interstate or overseas trips to view and assess facilities. This option has been included in our Annual General Meeting Agenda for the last sixteen years and has been used only once. However, prior approval is required by members to ensure the club complies with relevant legislation. Part (i) of the resolution to include reasonable expenses of partners of directors is to allow the availability of directors to attend meetings that are expected or required for their development and knowledge, and are often held in distant locations.

To be passed, each ordinary resolution must receive votes in its favour from not less than a simple majority of those members, who being entitled to do so, vote in person at the meeting.

Dated 12th August 2015

By Direction of the Board

C.A. McCarthy - General Manager

3. The Third Resolution lists the properties that comprise three commercial properties purchased in the local area in the past year.

Section 41J of the Registered Clubs Act 1976 (NSW) restricts the sale of any property declared as core property by members. All the club’s local investment properties apart from the three listed in the Third Ordinary Resolution have already been approved as non-core by members in the past. The Third Ordinary Resolution is to declare all the club’s remaining properties, apart from the main club building and carpark at 117 Ryedale Rd. West Ryde, as non-core properties.

There is no proposal to dispose of any of the listed properties. The Resolution is to provide flexibility for the Board of Directors, present or future, to properly manage these assets without the need to wait for an AGM of members, or convene a costly Extraordinary General Meeting.

The Board of Directors recommend in favour of the Ordinary Resolution.

NOTICE OF SPECIAL RESOLUTION

“That the Constitution of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Limited be amended by:

• Amending Rule 69 by:

• Deleting the word “or” at the end of Rule 69(h);

• Replacing the full stop at the end of Rule 69(i) with a semi-colon;

• Adding new Rules 69(j) and 69(k) after Rule 69(i), as follows:

“(j) If he or she fails to complete any training for a registered club director that the person is required to complete, within the prescribed period, pursuant to the Registered Clubs Act and Registered Clubs Regulation 2015 (NSW) (provided that this Rule 69(j) shall not apply to any Director who is exempt from completing such training under the Registered Clubs Act and Registered Clubs Regulation 2015 (NSW)); or (k) If he or she ceases to hold a qualification by which that person was appointed to or elected to office.”

The above changes will result in Rule 69 reading as follows:

“69 The office of a member of the Board shall automatically be vacated:

(a) If he or she dies;

(b) If he or she becomes insolvent under administration becomes disqualified from managing any company under Part 2D.6 of the Act and is not given permission to manage the Club under sections 206F or 206G of the Act;

(c) If he or she becomes of unsound mind or a person whose person or estate is liable to be dealt with in any way under the law relating to mental health;

(d) If he or she is absent from meetings of the Board for a continuous period of three calendar months without leave of absence from the Board and the Board resolves that his or her office be vacated;

(e) If by notice in writing given to the Secretary he or she resigns from office as a director;

(f) If he or she becomes prohibited from being a member of the Board by reason of any order made under the Act or the Registered Clubs Act;

(g) If he or she ceases to be a member of the Club;

(h) If he or she fails to declare the nature of his or her interest in a contract or office or property in accordance with this Constitution;

(i) If he or she becomes an employee of the Club;

(j) If he or she fails to complete any training for a registered club director that the person is required to complete, within the prescribed period, pursuant to the Registered Clubs Act and Registered Clubs Regulation 2015 (NSW) (provided that this Rule 69(j) shall not apply to any Director who is exempt from completing such training under the Registered Clubs Act and Registered Clubs Regulation 2015 (NSW)); or

(k) If he or she ceases to hold a qualification by which that person was appointed to or elected to office.”

• Deleting rule 72(b) and inserting instead the following new rule 72(b):

“(b) The Board must call and arrange to hold a General Meeting of the Club on the request of members with at least 5% of the votes that may be cast at the General Meeting. In this rule 72 the term “the request” shall mean the request referred to in this paragraph (b).”

Proposed new Rules 69(j) and 69(k)

1. The Registered Clubs Act and Registered Clubs Regulation, 2015 (NSW) now require directors of registered clubs to undertake mandatory training, unless they are exempted from that training. The training requirements are being phased in and will apply to all registered club directors by 30 June 2018. Proposed new rule 69(j) will cause a director to lose office on the Board if he or she fails to complete the mandatory training requirements, thereby creating a casual vacancy on the Board.

2. Proposed new rule 69(k) will make it clear that a director will lose office if they cease to hold a qualification by which they were appointed to or elected to office. For example, if a director was elected to office as a financial member of the Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club Committee (pursuant to the requirements of rule 49(b)) and subsequent to their appointment or election ceases to hold that qualification, it will be clear the director will automatically lose office as a director of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Ltd.

3. Proposed new Rule 72(b)

4. Section 249D of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) (Corporations Act) previously provided that a company must call a General Meeting on the request of members with at least 5% of the votes which may be cast at a General Meeting or 100 members who were entitled to vote (whichever was less), which is reflected in existing rule 72(b) of the Club’s Constitution.

5. Section 249D has recently been changed so that such a request can now only be made by members with at least 5% of the votes that may be cast at the General Meeting. This is intended to ensure that there is at least a reasonable level of support amongst the membership for a special General Meeting to be called in this way, particularly given the costs associated with the calling of General Meetings.

Proposed new rule 72(b) will reflect the current provisions of the Corporations Act. This does not change the requirement for the Club to hold its Annual General Meeting each year, or the rights of the members to give notice of proposed resolutions under rule 76 of the Constitution, in accordance with the requirements of sections 249N and 249O of the Corporations Act.

GENERAL NOTES TO MEMBERS REGARDING THE SPECIAL RESOLUTION

A member may, on request to the Club office, obtain a copy of the Club’s Constitution which contains the existing provisions that are proposed to be amended by the above Special Resolution.

1. In accordance with rules 24(a), 24(b), 98(a) and 98(b) of the Club’s Constitution, only Life Members, financial Club Members and financial Foundation Members who:

2. (a) were Full Members of the Club as at 24 November 2011; or (b) became Full Members of the Club from 25 November 2011 and before the conclusion of the Club’s Annual General Meeting (held on 21 November 2013) and who have at least 3 years standing as a Full Member, are eligible to vote on the Special Resolution.

Under rules 24(c) and 98(c), any Life Members and financial Club Members who became Full Members after the conclusion of the 2013 Annual General Meeting (held on 21 November 2013) are not able to vote on the Special Resolution as they must have at least 5 years standing as a Full Member before they can vote on any special resolution. There are no Foundation Members in this category as that class of membership has been closed to new membership for some time.

3. To be passed the Special Resolution must receive votes in its favour from not less than three-quarters of those members who being eligible to do so, vote in person at the meeting.

4. As a result of the Special Resolution provisions of the Corporations Act, the Special Resolution must be considered as a whole and cannot be altered in substance by motions from the floor of the meeting.

5. Members who are employees of the Club are not entitled to vote.

6. Proxy voting is prohibited by the Registered Clubs Act.

The Board recommends that members vote in favour of the Special Resolution

CAMERA CLUB

Another enjoyable and rewarding year for our photographic members here at the Camera Club. The outings provided by the Club to such places as Mount Tomah, Sydney Taronga Zoo, and the memorable bus trip to ChromeFest could enjoyed by both photographers and their families. You don’t need to be a photographer to enjoy the places that we visit. On our Monday night meetings we shared in the knowledge of other photographers in such areas as Urban Grunge, Travel and Landscape / Seascape photography. This year is our second year to investigate and further develop photographic portfolios, a collection of photographic images that tell a story. We look forward to our annual Christmas Dinner and Awards Presentations on 7th December. This always provides members and their families with the opportunity to share a meal together and to view some of the images that were taken throughout the year. We thank Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and its Directors for their ongoing support and especially for the refreshments that they so kindly provide for us at each of our Monday night meetings. Come, see and share with us. A very happy Christmas to all our readers. You can find out more about our club and its activities at: www.pbase.com/relccc John Maynard

CHESS CLUB

The interclub Grade Matches finished in July. Our U1500 team (the only team we fielded this year) finished third out of 6 teams. The club Blitz championship was held in mid-August and was won by Donato Mallari with Chris Ball second (reverse of last year!) and Ted Wong in third place. The Bobby Fischer Cup, held in late August, was won by Arthur Huynh, with Donato Mallari second and Shane Dibley third. The annual Ryde-Eastwood Open was hosted at the club over the October long weekend and attracted 69 players, including one grandmaster (Australia’s strongest player) and several International Masters. It was won by IM Igor Bjelobrk with a score of 6/7. The Club Championship finals and the club’s “Classic” tournament start on 14th October. As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. EUCHRE CLUB

An invitation is extended to experienced Euchre players to join our games on Wednesday evenings at 7.20pm in the Willandra Room. At the conclusion of the evening a light supper is provided. Congratulations to our monthly prize winners: July - 1st Fiona Arndell; 2nd Pierina Dick. August - 1st John King; 2nd John Marshall. Euchre club members and their partners enjoyed their annual mid-year dinner on 28th July with a Chinese banquet in the Golden Hawk Restaurant. The Euchre Club Committee and members would like to thank Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club for their support during 2015. We send season’s greetings to all and hope to welcome new players to our competition during the latter months of 2015 and throughout 2016. Aces up, Maria Lea.

GOLF

CLUB

It is with sadness that in early August a foundation member of RydeEastwood Leagues Social Golf Club, Arthur Archer, was farewelled. It is thanks to these dedicated members that we are still able to continue to enjoy our fortnightly game of golf and for that we the current members are very grateful. The Team Shield was contested by 17 brave souls on a cold morning at Springwood (even the locals weren’t playing). Fernsy didn’t disappoint wearing his shorts and shirt (no jumper) with the rest of the field rugged up struggling to swing a club. Congratulations to Rick Beves and Daryl Allwood, and a close second was Dave Whybro and Peter Lau. The Pairs Championships were at Windsor this year, and The Woodies snuck in, narrowly beating the other family connection of Fernsy/ Webber. The new layout Lynwood hosted our Matchplay semi-final,

and progressing to the final will be Robert Wood (defeating Tony Campbell) and Steve Ferns (defeating Ulla Wood). True to form, the course was the winner, but a couple of players managed to sneak in a relatively respectable score; congratulations Tony Tedesco in A-Grade and John Nilan, B-Grade, with runners-up Greg Webber and Alan Henderson. Macarthur Grange hosted our Medal of Medals and Matchplay final; congratulations Dave Whybro, taking out the Medal of Medals, and Steve Ferns beating Robert Wood 4/2. The day’s event saw David Tompkins on the podium for the first time with Dave Whybro runner-up. Congratulations to the brave 16 who turned up and managed to not get wet although the weather wasn’t looking very promising on the way to golf. The club championships started at Fox Hills and congratulations to the Wood family in A-Grade with Ulla winning and Robert runner-up. Our B-graders were obviously on a different golf course based on the scores. Congratulations to Alan Henderson and runner-up Eric Tsui. Round two was at Richmond and congratulations to Rick Beves our A, and Terry Ludlow, B grade winners. Runner-up prizes on the day went to Fernsy and Daryl Allwood. The final round will be played at The Springs, and all results are close, so good luck to everyone. Don’t forget to check the website for full results www.relgolfclub.com Annika.

INDOOR BOWLS

Although unsuccessful at the recent Australian Championships in Warrnambool in August, members of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Indoor Bowls Club enjoyed the opportunity to participate. New members are always welcome to join our friendly Indoor Bowls Club. Ladies play Wednesday’s 10.30am - 2.00pm (we often share a coffee and chat after the game) and mixed play Thursdays 7.30pm. - 10pm. Enquiries please phone Narelle on 8065 9284 or Cath’s mobile 0413 600 019.

SENIORS CLUB

It is with sadness that I have to advise one of our longstanding members, Nancy Lee, passed away in September. Both she and her husband Jerry have been supporters of the Seniors Club since its inception in 2000, and she will be greatly missed. Our condolences to Jerry, Lorraine and family. Well, nearly another year has flown by with its usual speed. We have had a busy year with monthly bus trips – conveniently picking up and dropping back at the Club – we have had lunches at the Ryde College of Catering (TAFE), Doyle’s Winter Special at Watsons Bay in June, and further afield with a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day and “Christmas in July” festivities at the Waterview Restaurant, Berowra Waters; One of our day trips took us aboard the Riverboat Postman, Brooklyn, and in October there was a four day trip to Batemans Bay. Our monthly walks around Sydney continue to be well attended and certainly keep us fit. The highlight of our year is our annual Christmas Lunch held in the Heritage Function Centre at the Club, and what an excellent lunch we have thanks to Sidney Ho and staff. We wish all our members a very happy Christmas and a healthy and safe New Year and we hope to see you all again in 2016. Our thanks, as always, go to the Staff at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club for all their help and continuing support to the Seniors Club. Our thanks also go to our very active Patron, Mr. Dennis Petkovich.

We meet on the first and third Thursday of every month at 11am and our fee is only $5 for the year, so come along and join us. For more information please contact Marie Weston (Secretary) on 9638 7419

SQUASH CLUB

This report from the Squash Club comes filled with both excitement, as we announce the newly crowned Club Champions, and regret, as we reveal the Grand Final results from the previous Autumn Squash Competition. Unfortunately, our Division 5 team (who finished the regular rounds in 1st place) fell at the final hurdle, losing to their opponents in the Grand Final match. Better luck next time squashies!

The 2015 Squash Club Championships heralded not only two tightly contested finals, but also the setting of two new Squash Club records. Division 2 was a matchup between Ernie Speed (Club President) and Karyn West (#1 seed). Although the game score

INTERNAL CLUB NEWS

finished in Karyn’s favour, the match was played with the utmost gamesmanship and was an excellent warm up for the audience before the real spectacle began - the Division 1 final. In Division 1, Leigh Ditu (#2 seed) and Tim Doyle (#3 seed) played a seesawing match where the final result could not be predicted until the very last squash point was scored – victory to Leigh Ditu. In the Squash Club’s extensive history, the Division 1 winner has always been a male squash player however in 2015, not only was the Division 1 winner female, but also the Division 2 winner and the winners are sisters to boot. They must come from great Squash stock! The next big event in the Squash Club’s calendar is the Annual Presentation Dinner, being held on Saturday 14th November at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. We hope to see all squash members there as, like always, it promises to be a very enjoyable night. The Squash Club could not continue to write new pages in its proud and lengthy history without the assistance and backing of the RELC. We thank the RELC for their continued support and hope that our collaboration will continue well into the future. Even though the new squash competition has just commenced, the Squash Club is always keen to hear from squash players interested in joining the club and playing competitively. If this is you, please contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348.

A Squash Player was refused service in a restaurant. “We don’t serve Squash Players here”, said the waiter.

“That’s OK,” said the Squash Player “I don’t eat Squash Players”.

TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB

In September we headed south to Towradgi Bowling Club, where we had a very enjoyable day. We played good games of bowls, had a great time and six of our members won a bottle of wine as a prize for their efforts. Our last trip of the year will be to Woy Woy Bowling club on Sunday 8th November 2015. Please come along and join in the fun. We will be having our Christmas lunch on Friday 11th December 2015 at the Club, starting from 12 pm . The cost will be $35 per person. The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Thursday 4th February 2016 at 7pm. If we do not see you before Christmas, we wish you all a Merry and safe Christmas and a happy New Year and hope to see you on the bus in 2016. For further information please contact Robyn Newton on 9858 3014, Brenda Paterson on 8819 9650, Maria Armstrong on 9888 6359 or Milly Farrell on 9872 7949. Regards. Maria Armstrong.

TRAVEL CLUB

The Travel Club has enjoyed the last few months packed full with many outings. We experienced a most enjoyable day at Brooklyn on the Riverboat Postman, consumed many calories at the Ryde TAFE High Tea, and cruised across Broken Bay to Patonga where we had lunch before visiting the Kalkari Visitors Centre. In October we went to the Leura Garden Festival, which was spectacular, with lots of vibrant colour at Tandella Gardens and Ilion and at Waitangi Open Garden to see all the new spring flowers, after lunching at the Katoomba Golf Club. Upcoming events include:

November: A smorgasbord luncheon for Melbourne Cup.

December: Our traditional Christmas Party Luncheon with lots of prizes, fun and merriement.

January: Australia Day breakfast in the Club.

The Travel Club would like to take this opportunity to extend our wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We meet in the Ryedale Room at the club on the first Tuesday of the month. We are always happy to welcome new members, both men and women. For more information on these events or our meetings please contact Yvonne Steel (President) on 9878 1164 or Gordon Irving (Secretary) on 9871 8358.
