President’s REPORT

Dear Member,

By the time Members read this report, Easter and Seniors Week will be over. I trust that all Members and their families had a relaxing Easter break and that our senior members enjoyed their special week.

On behalf of the Club, Board and Management I would like to thank those Members who were able to contribute to the Sista Code movement to help those local women and children housed in refuges by providing vital goods for them. This initiative is a joint venture with the Leagues Club Association and the R.S.L. and Services Clubs Association. Our Club was only too happy to assist. Also on the community front, I draw members’ attention to a ‘parenting strategy evening’ which will be held at the club on 27th May. This is a great initiative by Ryde Family Services to help parents with the sometimes very difficult task of raising children. Full details are on page 19 of this journal.

The Club recently hosted the launch of the Eastwood Ryde Netball Association Premier League teams that will compete in the Netball NSW Premier League Competition. All in attendance enjoyed meeting with the team members. Your Club is the major sponsor of the ERNA teams, and we are all hoping for a successful season commencing on 20 April at Netball Central, Sydney Olympic Park.

The renovation to the auditorium has recently been completed with a major change of décor. This area of the club had not been updated since 2000 and the change brings a fresh and contemporary look. Renovations are continuing in the Club with upgrades for the outdoor gaming area and new furniture for the Bistro and Function Centre next on the list. These renovations will give your Club a fresh look and keep us at the forefront of the club business.

The Board and Management recently held a strategic planning seminar with our financial advisors and builders, and this seminar will ensure that our Club is as well prepared as possible for any changes to our business over the coming years.

As stated in the previous journal, the Club is trading extremely well and should again return an excellent result for the forthcoming financial year at the end of June.

As I have mentioned on numerous occasions, all the many things that this Club is able to do and achieve would not be possible without the continued support of you, the Members, and I again thank all on behalf of the Board and Management.

Keith Aggett. President.

Football REPORT

With the 2016 season now underway, we can report that this year’s Competition has been renamed the INTRUST SUPER PREMIERSHIP NSW. The previous title was THE STATE CUP.

The Club is again sponsoring the West Tigers in this Competition, and after five rounds the team has won three and lost two.

The first game was played against Manly and was won in great style by 34 to 16. The team comprised many new faces that performed well at this level.

The second match was against the New Zealand Warriors and was a complete reversal of form with the team demolished by 44 to 6.

The third match was against Wyong and again the team reversed their form by winning 44 to 16.

Game 4 saw a 32-16 win against the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs, while game 5 resulted in a 38-14 loss to the Newtown Jets.

It will remain to be seen whether this team can go on to better results or again fall by the wayside over the coming season.

The football club will again be supporting our four local junior clubs and we wish them all the best for their forthcoming season.

SENIORS CLUB

Members voted in February for the Committee of the RELC Seniors Club and it is with thanks and pleasure that all the incumbent members were returned to office. We are always open to suggestions regarding outings etc. so please give us your thoughts. Our “Diary” is published on a six-monthly basis, giving plenty of time to make your decisions as to where and what you wish to do. Every month we have a bus trip, picking up at the Club and brought back in the afternoon. Throughout the year we have a few days away, a cruise, and lunches out. Each month we have a group of enthusiastic walkers going somewhere around Sydney. In March we walked along the newly finished Barangaroo, which was most enjoyable. We had St. Patrick’s Day lunch at Waterview Restaurant, Berowra Waters and are looking forward to Christmas in July celebrations at Shelly Beach Golf Club. From Monday to Friday a game of Solo (cards) is played in the Sports Lounge from 1.30pm. We meet on the first and third Thursday of the month at 11am in the function rooms of the Club. Our annual fee is only $5. For further information please contact Marie Weston, Secretary, on 9638 7419.

SQUASH CLUB

For the RELSC members, the recent months have heralded not only Easter and its associated public holidays but also the start of the autumn squash competition, and most importantly the club’s AGM. The Squash club’s devoted members turned out

in force to the AGM to both thank the outgoing Executive and to appoint their successors for 2016. It’s with great pleasure that we announce the following appointments: Ernie Speed (President), Bev Speed (Secretary) and John Stapley (Treasurer). We wish you all the best in your positions for this year, as representatives of the club and their members. The autumn squash competition is well underway, with our hopes riding on our Division 5 team. Although our team has ample enthusiasm and a strong ‘family’ spirit, the other teams in their division are particularly strong, and we will have our work cut out to secure a place in the finals. History shows that the underdogs can sometimes steal the show. Are you interested in joining the Squash Club? We gladly accept new members, and are always looking for players to join our competition teams. For more information please contact Ernie on 9807 3348.

What is Big Foot’s sister’s name? Miss Sass Squash.

Unfortunately two events had to be cancelled but the Committee is gearing-up for excursions during the year, so keep you diary handy. A special moment was the awarding of Yvonne Steel with Life Membership of The Travel Club at the Annual General Meeting. The Members gave the motion unanimous support. The following events are to be noted — April: Lunch at Wing’s. May: Mother’s Day Lunch. June: A special Trip—Back to the 50s, a period that each of us knows. Future trips will be advised in the monthly flyer. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month in the Ryedale Room, so come and hear our guest speaker and find out about our future trips. Of course, we have a cup of tea and a chat after the Meeting. For more information please contact Yvonne Steel (President) on 9878 1164 or Helen Tuckwell (Treasurer) on 9809 4335.
