Hi to all in our Ryde Eastwood family.
I hope you all had a safe and happy New Year and, like me, as we enter 2020, I imagine many of you are asking where did the last decade go? We held a very productive Annual General Meeting in November, and as I stated at the last AGM, if I have to decide between being insulted or flattered by the small number of attendees. I take the latter. A very experienced President once told me that members will always turn up to an AGM if the club is not running well.
I recently had the pleasure of having dinner with the representatives of our internal clubs. I thanked them for their assistance and expertise to our members and how we consider them to be a very important part of our club. So members, if you like organised day trips, golf games, fishing trips, camera club outings, bowls etc., please consider joining in. These clubs publicise their meetings in our journal so consider enjoying the activities they supply. We are very proud of our internal clubs, which are always looking for new members.
As I reflect on my 25th year on the Board, I continue to be dismayed by the changes around us in our community. Twenty-five years ago they were closing down schools around us and now they are building vertical schools to suit the present demographics. The Board is very happy and proud of the way that Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club has enjoyed continued success in these ever-changing times, thus leaving your club in a strong financial position and being recognised as a very important part of our community.
We are a little disappointed that we are not further ahead with our Seniors Living project and the finalisation of the sale of the laneway surrounding our club, but I hope to have great news on this front for our next journal. We do expect both of these projects to be imminent, meaning the Board and Management will “have their noses to the grindstone” for some time yet planning your club of the future. We know from experience that we have to build a strong foundation for our club of the future while providing a club that moves with the times, not only satisfying our members’ wants and needs, but also exceeding expectations while elevating our proud standing in the community. To this end, we have engaged a firm called URBIS which specialises in Master Planning and has the expertise in assisting and guiding future planning projects. We feel confident with its track record of success in our industry and others that URBIS will move your club forward into the future. The Board and Management understands there will be many meetings, discussions, research and decisions to develop a plan for the ongoing future and success of the club; we believe in leaving a legacy for those who follow, as was done for us.
In conclusion, we are proud of not only what we have achieved for the community of Ryde, the Adam Gardiner Foundation and the long list of charities, including Ryde and Westmead Hospitals etc., but also the club’s donations to the Tathra and Bingara communities to assist them in their time of need. As I write this article, the fires in our NSW regional areas are most severe; on behalf of our members we will certainly be doing our bit to assist. We would not be able to do what we do without your continued support, therefore I thank you one and all, and we are looking forward to a very busy but exciting 2020.
See you in the club.
JAMES
(JIM) M C CLYMONT President
Dear Member,
Welcome to our first edition of the Football report for Season 2020. I hope all members had enjoyable Christmas and a safe start to the New Year.
NEW
Changes have been made to our players’ playing strip. We will continue with our club colours Red and White, with a change to the printed design and I am sure all players and members will find the new look pleasing. All coaches and support staff have now been appointed; for our operations staff, Michael Frain has been re-appointed as Football Operations Manager with Richard Kelly also re-appointed as Finance and Administration Manager.
ADDITIONAL TEAM FOR 2020
In addition to our seven current teams, we will have an Under 18s Girls side representing Ryde-Eastwood Combined Rugby Leagues Club, which will secure eight individual playing teams in total competing this 2020 season.
Currently, training will be across three individual grounds with our home ground games to be played at TG MILNER OVAL at Eastwood. Investigations are currently ongoing to acquire a ground that will be able to accommodate our eight teams for training purposes.
Pre-season training commenced in November 2019 with all teams attending Holy Cross College grounds for pre-season training up until Christmas. Many new faces and current players attended these seasons. Our Open Age Lady Hawks have a trial game planned against St. Clair early in the New Year. Ryde-Eastwood Combined Rugby League has been invited by NSWRL to participate in the State Wide Challenge Cup, an invitation that we have gladly accepted. When playing details become available we will inform you via our inhouse advertising screens throughout the club.
Congratulations to Angus McElroy, our 2019 recipient of the John Dunlea Player of the Year Award. Angus was also further nominated and was a recipient of the Club 6 Sports Star Award. Our premiership Sydney Shield Trophy together with the Keith Aggett Club Person of the Year and the John Dunlea Player of the Year trophies are proudly on display in the club’s foyer above the fish tank.
All games for our 2020 Season with be advertised throughout the club and also on social media.
Until next time, watch this space.

Photography is an exciting hobby that takes you to see things that you wouldn’t ordinarily see. For example, have you ever been to Olympic trials to see competitors vying for a place? Maybe a surf boat race or a car show? Our group makes several trips each year and visits these exciting events to photograph them. Each trip is optional so if you don’t like a particular subject you don’t have to go. It’s a way to meet friends and get involved. We also have mentors to help you if you aren’t sure the way your camera works or just want better shots. Why not join us, you won’t be disappointed! You can view our images on the website at www.pbase. com/relccc. We meet in the Willandra Room every 2nd & 4th Monday from February to November, so come along and check out this friendly club as our guest. Bob Stephenson 0448 615 841.
The Club Championship finals are complete, with Ben Sindel finishing first, Arthur Huynh second and Lorenzo Escalante third. While the club championship finals were taking place, the Ryde-Eastwood Classic tournament was held for the other players, and was won overall by Sattar Nazari, with Mohan Pagadala second and Les Mikolajczyk third. The Division 2 winners were Alan Marton and Daniel Wang. Club activities resumed on 15 January in 2020. The 2020 AGM was held on 29 January, followed by the Club Rapid Championship over the following three weeks. As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. Visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot. com. Contact Les Mikolajczyk (0412 970 059), or Rob Watson (0408 463 759).
The Euchre Club had an enjoyable year in 2019 with many new members and exciting and competitive games. If you are a player, why not come and join us on Wednesday nights at 7.20pm in the Willandra Room. We celebrated Christmas with a lovely dinner in the Golden Hawk Restaurant, which was well attended by the players and their partners, and also our patron, Paul Moujalli with his wife Dianne. Paul announced our yearly winners for 2019, which was closely contested. Congratulations to 1st: Ivy Hitchens, 2nd: Joe Lake and 3rd: Don Baillie. Thank you Paul for your support during 2019. Also congratulations to our monthly winners for September 2019 - 1st: Joe Lake, 2nd: Beverley Caward. October 2019 - 1st: Ivy Hitchens, 2nd: Pierina Dick. November 2019 - 1st: Ivy Hitchens, 2nd: Celeste Norman. For any further information please contact our President Don Baillie on 9869 2857.
The results for the 2019 year were as follows. The biggest fish was caught by Raymond Calligeros with a 2.1kg Snapper, Runner up was Winnie Foo with a 1.83kg Teraglin and Winston foo was 3rd place -with A 1.80kg Morwong. The heaviest bag was Sam Sundar with a 67.8kg bag, followed by Michael Cheng with 34.6kg then Gary Lam with 24kgs. The October trip started out OK, but by mid-morning the wind was up and we were unable to hold bottom. The skipper decided to head for shelter so we spent the last hour and a half fishing inside The Heads. Sam Sundar once again had the heaviest bag with 8.9kgs with George Varga the heaviest fish, a 1kg Sargent Baker. There wasn’t a trip in November as the boat the (Putney Star) was in for service and repairs. The catch up trip on December 23rd was a pleasant outing with few tangles and little loss of sinkers. The ten members attending all managed to get a feed of fish and once again Sam Sundar had the heaviest bag at 6.7kgs. The biggest fish was shared between Sam and Nie Ceh, a 1.12kg Morwong. I am sure all winners for 2019 enjoyed the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club red wine. The fishing club organises monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months; any interested club member should contact Sam Sundar on 0413 000 303 or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 8pm, except December. Fishing Club President, Trevor Fahey.
Penrith was the final round of the Club Championships and congratulations go to our 2019 Club Champion, Steve Ferns, and A Grade Net Winner and B Grade Net Winner, John Nilan. Winner of the day’s event was Sharon Norton with Steve Ferns runner-up. Windsor was the Medal of Medals battle, with congratulations to John Nilan who took out the honours. The winner on the day was decided on a three-way count back with Valery P. the victor and John Nilan runner-up. Dunheved was home to the Guzzler’s Cup this year with Dave Whybro winning. Cabramatta hosted a multiplier event with Dave Whybro and Slava winning and Natalia P. and Robert Wood runner-up. Richmond hosted a single Stableford with Robert Wood winning and Colin Cope runner-up. Fox Hills was the ever popular Hams’ Day with everyone winning a prize, but in the lucky dip the big hams went to John Nilan and Slava Sokolov, and the slightly smaller hams went to Warren Savy and Peter Lau. The smallest hams went to Valery P. and Colin Cope. Good golfing for 2020! Annika.
This year, the Indoor Bowls Club is inviting male players to join our Wednesday bowls sessions as well as our Thursday night sessions. All our social functions were very well attended. We are grateful to the Board of RELC for its continued support and to Sidney and his staff for their catering at our functions. In December 2019 our members enjoyed Christmas Lunch at the Club with Peter Beard keeping everyone entertained with his music. We had interesting bus trips as far away as the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands and Central Coast, along with cruises (which are always popular). On 19th December we also had a Coffee and Cake Morning which was the last get-together prior to Christmas. We now have a busy schedule again in 2020, with a bus trip “somewhere” each month with lunch always included. Once a month, usually the first Monday, our energetic walkers take Sydney in their stride – weather permitting. We have many more bus trips planned with Mother’s and Father’s Day Lunches, and most importantly our 20th Anniversary Lunch to be held on 2nd July. Every Thursday we play a game of cards (Solo). For more information please contact Marie Weston, Secretary, on 9638 7419.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas lunch held at RydeEastwood Leagues club on Friday 22 November 2019; we had a great attendance and everyone seemed to have a good time. Hopefully Santa found you all and you celebrated the New Year in style. A huge thank you to our Patrons, Allen and Gwen Douglas and Dennis Petkovich for their support throughout the year; we truly appreciate their company and what they do for us throughout the year. Thank you to Chef Sidney and his staff for the lovely food. We all enjoyed our 3 course lunch and the great service that the staff provided. The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Thursday 6 February 2020 at 7pm at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, so please come along and nominate yourself or somebody else to be on the committee for the 2020 year. Our first trip for 2020 will be to Towradgi Bowling Club on Sunday 23 February 2020, and then the next trip on Sunday 3 May 2020 to Picton Bowling Club. Please come along and join in the fun. For further information, please contact either Milly Farrell on 9874 4667, Robyn Newton on 9858 3014, Helen McClure on 9457 8502 or Maria Armstrong on 9888 6359.
Well, we came through a very enjoyable “Melbourne Cup Day” at RELC. Don’t know of any winners! And then we planned for our Final Event of the year – “Our Christmas Party”. About 45 members came to enjoy an afternoon of good food and prizes. The tables were well decorated and drew the breath of our members. Everyone went away with a prize, and a table decoration for them to display in their home. New Year Brings a new plan and ideas; first-up was our monthly meeting on 7th January and then we had a get-together Lunch at RELC Bistro on the 23rd. In February we have an important luncheon, “The Inaugural Meeting of the Travel Club”, 20 years since the First Meeting of the Founding Members. We expect a great role-up! Be early and get your name down. Then in March we will hold our ”AGM”. This is an important meeting and hopefully some NEW Blood for the Committee will be elected. Make sure you’re there to have your say. Later that month, we are off on a boat cruise around Brisbane Waters, which should be a great day! In April watch-out for details of a coach tour to Picton. Remember that we meet on the first Tuesday of the Month at 10.30am in the Ryedale Room. Contact Jill Kemp regarding Membership and general information. Hope the New Year is great and that Christmas was enjoyable.

The Fitness Edge Swim School Babies and Preschooler swimming classes are designed to develop water confidence, safety and survival skills, which all develop a respect for the water. Lessons are 30 minutes’ duration and are conducted by our friendly and encouraging Austswim Qualified Infant Instructors.
WE SUPPORT LAURIE LAWRENCE’S “KIDS ALIVE DO THE 5”
1. Fence the pool
2. Shut the gate
3. Teach your kids to swim – it’s great 4. Supervise – watch your mate and 5. Learn how to resuscitate
The Fitness Edge Swim School offers a safe, friendly and encouraging environment for people of all ages and abilities. Our youngest students are 6 months of age and our most senior member
is in their 70s. It’s never too late to learn the life skill of swimming. All staff at The Fitness Edge are Austswim Qualified and all hold current CPR certification.
Babies and Preschool classes are held Monday to Friday between 11am and 12.30pm. There are limited Preschool positions on Saturdays. All Instructors on these classes are qualified in Austswim Infant and Preschool Aquatics.
School Age Learn to Swim classes are by far the most popular, with Term 1 - 2020 booked out. The classes cater for all school ages and abilities. The focus for younger children is on safety and gaining confidence; from there we develop all swimming strokes.
Our more serious swimmers move on to our stroke correction classes mastering breast stroke and butterfly, and then on to Pre-Squad and Squads.
While the main focus in these levels in still correct technique, speed and racing skills are also developed. Adult classes are held on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings. We have 2 levels - Beginners and Intermediate. (Saturday only). Beginner classes are for members who are not confident to swim with their faces in the water, and intermediate classes for members who can swim but want to improve their technique. Generally, The Fitness Edge Swim School operates within the Public School term. We do hold lessons on Pupil Free days, but not on Public Holidays. During School Holidays we offer an Intensive Swim Programme for our students currently in the programme. These programmes are very beneficial and often result in a surge of aquatic progress.
For further details, please call the Swim School office on 9808 7617.
Our office hours are: Mon – Fri: 10am – 6pm & Sat: 8am – 1pm.

As part of our commitment to bettering our community, RydeEastwood Leagues Club works with many organisations, clubs and teams to provide funding when there is a shortfall or a gap to fill. That gap came in the form of a much-needed ultrasound machine for Ryde Hospital. While the hospital has a radiology and imaging department that houses a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine, the Emergency Department (ED) lacked a portable version that now plays an integral part in the ED.
Ryde Hospital invited RELC to see just how important the machine is for the ED. Dr. Robert Bush, an ED physician, along with Heather Gough, General Manager of Ryde Hospital, gave us an overview and demonstration of the new machine.
An ultrasound machine uses soundwaves to provide a non-invasive way to see inside the body. As Dr. Robert Bush explained, the machine sends soundwaves into the body and the reflected soundwaves differentiate between the veins, arteries, muscles, etc. Having a portable version in ED helps reduce the time it would take to diagnose an issue by providing a glimpse into the patient’s body without having to send them to the imaging department, which takes extra time and money.
Using the portable machine also alleviates the stress for patients who don’t have to wait hours or days for an appointment to obtain their results. “A patient who suffers a fall can learn right away in the ED if they have suffered any fractures and receive medication to the localised area much quicker,” Dr. Bush explained. “This is all thanks to the Ultrasound machine, which provides so many great benefits for the community.”
On Sunday 27 October 2019, members of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and The Fitness Edge, along with staff and families, participated in the fourth annual RELC Fun Run/Walk (participants could either run or walk 5km, 10km, or volunteer).
We are very proud to announce that the annual RELC Fun Run/Walk members’ registrations, sponsorship and Board of
Directors’ donation raised over $5,000 for the Children’s Medical Research Institute!
Thank you to each and every participant, volunteer, the Board, our generous sponsors and the wider Ryde-Eastwood family. Bring on 2020’s event - we have a new goal to reach this year!
Last year the Ryde-Eastwood family raised over $5,000 at its World’s Greatest Shave event, which contributed to helping the fight against blood cancer.
In 2020, we’re doing it again and aiming to raise even more money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Come along and shave or colour your hair this March and help Aussie families beat blood cancer.
Shave or colour your hair at the club on Wednesday 11 March from 6.30pm!
After a very success 2019 season with the Open team winning the Netball NSW Premier League competition with a very convincing win over the Central Coast Heart in September and our Under 23 team coming in fourth, the teams for 2020 begin training in early February.
The Premier League season starts at the end of April with the competition increased to 10 franchises this year. These extra two teams come from the Illawarra district and Canberra, so these dedicated netballers will have lots of travelling backwards and forwards to Sydney each Wednesday night.
As can happen after a grand final win the Opens team has had a few retirements and a couple of players unable to play due to their regular duties with the NSW Swifts and GIANTS Netball. Sandy Attard is stepping up into the roll of head coach for the Opens, after successful 2019 coach Jen Wright has moved on coaching the U19 state team. Sandy is very much looking forward to the challenge of coaching this talented and successful team. Sandy will be ably assisted by Debbie Deans Smith a long-term ERNA player and coach, and Manager Di Bills.
The Opens team for 2020 will be Georgia Marshall, Emily Bills, Claire O’Brien, Alisha Cairns, Ebony Burnard, Sophie Dwyer, Olivia Coleman, Alison Miller, Nicole Styles and new recruits Brooke Lawrence (sister of Wests Tigers’ Chris Lawrence) and Stephanie MacGougan; we happily welcome both girls to our club. For the first part of the season the Opens will be “loaning” many of its players to NSW 2 ANL teams, so initially, there will be lots of player movement.
The Hawks U23 team is a young new look team this year for Jennie Webster and Rachel Lenaz to coach and nurture into future champions. Once again, the team will be managed by long term ERNA stalwart, Debra Hanson. The team for 2020 is Laura Cook, Catherine Tevaga, Anastasia Afoa, Levana Wayne-Boyle, Papi Alaalatoa, Tayla Harkins, Ana Lupe Kailahi, Amelia Kirgan, Ella Woodhill, Chloe Hatvany and Jessica Conlan, with training partners Macy Peni and Malava Palamo.
The ERNA Hawks are looking forward to another tough and hopefully successful 2020!
As a Ryde-Eastwood “Members Only” offer, there will be lucky draws during the season to win tickets to cheer on your ERNA Hawks team at a Premier League game.
There will also be a chance to win one of 4 Family Passes to see the following Game:
1pm at Ken Rosewall Arena
For your chance to win the family passes above, simply register your name at Club reception from 3 February to be eligible. Names will be drawn on a ballot basis, with all winners notified via phone.
Ryde-Eastwood is proud to partner with the McGrath Foundation, which raises money to fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses, who provide invaluable support and care to women and men experiencing breast cancer.
As part of our Pink Week fundraising initiatives, we are hosting the McGrath Foundation PINK COCKTAIL EVENING FUNDRAISER ON THURSDAY 20 FEBRUARY AT 7PM with finger food and a glass of bubbles on arrival.
All proceeds raised on the night will be donated to the McGrath Foundation. The night will include an informative talk from one of the Foundation’s speakers.
This is followed by a FUN TRIVIA COMPETITION with bookings for tables of ten.
Tickets for the evening are $35. Book now at Club reception.
During Pink Week, The Coffee Club will donate $1 for every purchase of Fish and Chips or Lemon Pepper Calamari.
The Palm Court Bistro will donate $1 for every Pink lamington purchase served with a scoop of gelato.
In Pink Week, the Club will also donate $1 for every membership sold and 10% of all raffle ticket sales. The Club’s Board will match all donations.
Prizes for all the family and some ‘Pamper Hampers’ especially for mum.
Ticket sales from 12.30pm in the club foyer. The raffle starts at 2pm.
