PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to all club members and guests for this edition of the club journal. Here we are mid-year in one of the most difficult times, not only for your club but for all clubs in the hospitality industry in general.
Nevertheless, the Board is able to forge ahead with its projected plans due to our strong financial base and thanks to you, our loyal members, for your continued support of the club.
The Board realises it must never relax on its laurels and become complacent in these times because we are expected to deliver a facility and service levels that meet and exceed community expectations in a highly competitive industry.
Some projects we continue to progress include:
THE CLUB – Presently, the new administration area is on track and, all being well, this will see staff relocate from mid-to-end of October, which will open up more function space for members and guests in time for the festive season.
CLUB THIRROUL – The planned renovations are out for tender with engagement and building soon to commence. This will include a new gaming room with an alfresco area, a new TAB area and a large alfresco food and beverage space. We continue to plan the next steps at Thirroul for marketing the venue and its offerings to meet the needs of members and the wider community.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Annual General Meeting of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club will be held in the Willandra Room at the Club on Thursday 24th November 2022 at 7.00pm. A further notice of the Annual General Meeting along with the Agenda and board nominees (if applicable) will be sent to all members by 31st October 2022.
NOMINATION FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Nominations for the position of Director of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Ltd, open on Wednesday 10th August 2022 and close at 5pm on Wednesday 24th August 2022.
Nomination forms are available on request from the Chief Executive Officer, and attention is drawn to Articles 49 of the Club’s Constitution which requires members to have the following qualifications to be able to nominate for director.
1. They must be a full member of the club
2. They have been a Life or Financial standing and consistent member of the club for at least 5 years as of the opening of nominations for election
Attention is also drawn to Article 52 of the Constitution, which requires that a nomination of election of Directors shall be made in writing and signed by two (2)
NOTICE OF MEETING
REL SENIORS LIVING - The club continues to progress with a DA lodged with Council for Stage 1 of the project.
CLUB VISION AND MASTERPLAN – Your Board and Management continue to seek opportunities for members and the community. We monitor other community projects so that your club can develop its vision in line with community needs. Other projects on the go include the Ryde Hospital Development that has $479 million approved for revitalisation, which will have a positive impact on our members. Then there is the Education Precinct at Meadowbank, which will see growth in the local area and an opportunity for the club to contribute as a valuable community partner.
I write this article as a proud Club President who has just presented, on your behalf, a $20,000 cheque to Cancer Council. Recently, I was also able to attend the 2022 Clubs & Community Awards night where your club won the Health Care category award for our contribution to the Adam Gardiner Fund, which is dedicated to finding a cure for amyloidosis, which unfortunately took the life of one of our colleagues.
This is an ongoing relationship with our founding club charity, and over the last 16 years we have donated more than $500,000. In conclusion, what we have achieved in the past and what we plan for the future is only possible because of you, our loyal members.
For this, the Board and management thank you very much as we continue to work for the betterment of your club and community. See you in the club.
James (Jim) McClymont, President
members of the Club and by the nominee, who shall also signify his/her consent to the nomination.

Clubs & Community AWARDS WINNER 2022
On 26 May at this year’s Clubs & Community Awards night, Ryde-Eastwood was honoured to be announced the winner in the ‘Health Care’ category for our pledge to The Adam Gardiner Fund.

The club has proudly supported the fund for over 15 years, pledging over half a million dollars to fund research on the rare disease of amyloidosis. Trisha Gardiner Wilson started the fund back in 2006 in memory of her husband, Adam Gardiner, who lost his life to amyloidosis at the age of 35.
Since then, Ryde-Eastwood and AGF have proudly supported the Amyloidosis Clinic at Westmead Hospital. As the Leukaemia Foundation states: “Over the past 10 years there has been a much greater understanding of Amyloidosis. With earlier diagnosis, improvements in assessment and treatment regimes, many patients are now experiencing long remissions and living full lives.”
We are proud and privileged to continue our support of the Adam Gardiner Fund, which raises vitally important funds and awareness to combat amyloidosis and provide patients with the chance to live fuller lives.

Thank you to all our members and club staff who donated and participated in The Fitness Edge Push-Up Challenge to make a difference to mental health and suicide prevention.
We achieved 9,969 push-ups, raising a total of $2,280 for ‘Movember’, supporting the #pushforbetter mental health. Well done to everyone for their big effort!

PANKIND #PLAYINPURPLE
#PlayinPurple is a national awareness campaign coordinated by The Australian Pancreatic Cancer Foundation – PanKind - that turned football fields purple across Australia on 25 and 26 June for pancreatic cancer. Ryde-Eastwood was eager to partner with Pankind to raise vital funds for and promote awareness of pancreatic cancer. Our junior clubs and the Ryde-Eastwood Combined Hawks were all raring to pull on their purple socks

during their games to raise awareness and funds to fight the disease. The club purchased $13,000 worth of socks for the Carlingford Cougars, Holy Cross Rhinos, Dundas Shamrocks, North Ryde Hawks and Ryde-Eastwood Hawks teams.
We thank everyone for their enthusiasm and help in supporting such a great cause.

RYDE-EASTWOOD RAISES $20,000 FOR CANCER COUNCIL
The club has supported Cancer Council for the last four years through community fundraising initiatives and is proud to have raised $20,000 over this period. Fundraising activities have included hosting Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, the Fitness Edge Swim School Aquathon, the March Charge, a special online raffle, and generous Board donations.
And a big thanks goes to club manager, Frances McCann, who donated a trolley filled with groceries in our ‘Guess the Value’ competition. We thank everyone involved for their support of Cancer Council.
RYDE-EASTWOOD SUPPORTS BEANIES FOR BRAIN CANCER
The Mark Hughes Foundation’s (MHF), mission is to create awareness and raise much needed funds for research and support for brain cancer patients and their families.
In July, both Ryde-Eastwood and Club Thirroul sold the Foundation’s beanies and raised $6,250 for this vital cause. As you can see, staff wore their beanies with pride during the recent cold winter snap.

The club is hosting its first postCovid fun run / walk, between Meadowbank and Rydalmere wharves, on 30 October. Registrations open in August. Watch this space . . .
Past events have raised over $6,000 for the Children’s Medical Research Institute.
SUPER-NETBALL FUN!
In June, club member Cheryl Rugg won the club’s ERNA Hawks Super Netball ticket promotion, and her granddaughters, Neve, Meilah, and Henley, had a great time watching the Giants’ thrilling 68–65 over the Lightning in the Super Netball game at Ken Rosewall Arena. They could be budding ERNA Hawks stars of the future!

FOOTBALL REPORT
Dear Members,
It is with sad news that I inform all members of the passing of our committee man, Brad Wilson, who lost his courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. Brad was an excellent committee man and has left big shoes to fill. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him in the football fraternity and beyond.
Football club members are advised that nominations for committee members for the football club will be held at 7pm on 2 August 2022 at the Leagues Club. Also, members’ fees for the 2022/23 season must be paid by 30 September 2022 - Malcolm Chapple, Ryde-Eastwood Football Club President.
Unfortunately, our Season continues to be interrupted by poor weather, with games postponed and training grounds closed.
UNDER 18 S
This team of young men just want to be able to play football week in, week out. They have experienced a great many injuries, having only been able to field 11 players in some games. However, they are a team that never stops trying and full credit to the coaching staff who get them out onto the field. Indeed, it is unfortunate that the team has not won a game for all the effort and commitment they have put in. At this point, they are currently running 6th in their competition.
UNDER 20 S
Having won 3 games plus a bye, they are currently 3rd in their competition. As with the Under 18s, this is another team of young men who just love playing football and giving 100% effort every week.

GRADE SILVER
This team was an Under 20s Division 1 team; however, due to a lack of teams registered in this competition, they were granted to play in the A Grade Silver Competition, a bit of a step up, but at this point in the competition they are running 3rd with three wins, plus a bye. They are a very good side indeed.
A GRADE GOLD
The tem is currently running in 4th spot with three wins, plus a bye. We are expecting this team to go further into the Semi-Finals.
SYDNEY SHIELD
Currently running 2nd with 7 wins plus a bye, the team’s last two games were losses. The boys have lost a bit of momentum, and no doubt the coach will take steps to rectify this slump in form.
RON MASSEY CUP
Currently running 5th with 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 bye, this side has run hot and cold, but when their minds are on the game, they can beat any team in this competition.
FIJI TRIP AWAY
On the 29th July it was planned for the Ron Massey Cup to play The Fijian Silktales in Nandi. However, owing to an ongoing dispute between the Fijian Rugby League and Fijian Silktales, NSW Rugby League decided to cancel this tour. Instead, this game was rescheduled to be played in Sydney on 24 July, at Mascot Oval. At the time of writing, this game is still yet to be played. Watch this space . . .

BEANIES FOR BRAIN CANCER
Members, you will be pleased to know that the Hawks have participated again in the Mark Hughes Foundation’s Beanies for Brain Cancer Round, which was scheduled for the weekend of 3 July, when our players were due to be photographed wearing the Mark Hughes Foundation Beanies. The weekend was a washout so the photo opportunity was postponed until the next week when the Hawks took on Wenty at TG Milner. The team all donned their MHF beanies as seen below.
PURPLE SOCK DAY
The Hawks also participated in PlayInPurple, to support Pankind, the Australian Pancreatic Cancer Foundation. (See below). All proceeds of sales for the Beanies for Brain Cancer and Purple Sock Day go directly to their respective foundations.
We look forward to seeing you supporting our Mighty Hawks, and for all our Hawks News please see the advertising screens throughout the club.
Until next time, watch this space.
Malcolm Chapple
Ryde-Eastwood Football Club President

S eniors Housing AT RYDE-EASTWOOD
The club continues its vision to create a place at the Heart of the community for everyone to enjoy. A big part of this vision has helped build our commitment to deliver quality seniors housing for our members and the local community.
With over 37,000 members, including 20,000 + senior members, we feel the offer extends to our core and will deliver a unique quality offering for all.
In recent months, the club has worked with Ryde Council to ensure that we deliver a vision and suitable offering to benefit the community.
As a result of this preliminary work, we recently lodged a DA application with Ryde Council for part of the village build. We hope this will now be the start of making the seniors housing

development a true reality and enabling us to deliver the offering to our members and the community.

The Seniors Living Community is designed as an aspiring offering to meet the evolving needs of Ryde-Eastwood members and the broader community. The design principles will allow residents to ‘age-in-place’ and provide exemplary facilities and services that offer a premium product above the standard of the existing residential market in the area. As such, it will become an aspirational and relevant offering well into the future.
We will continue to engage with members and key stakeholders on the vision. In the coming months, this will produce more detail about the offering and how people can become involved.
We will also be commencing member information sessions to better inform those who are interested in this exciting project. This will also ensure that we consider all factors in the project and maximise the linkage it creates with the club.
If you have any questions, please email us at seniorshousing@releagues.com.au
