Dear Member,
With the 2014-2015 financial year now ended, it appears that our Club will again post a tidy profit for the year. The final figure will be determined in the next few months after the club auditors, BDO, complete their very thorough financial analysis and audit. Full details will be available on the Club’s website toward the end of October.
On the Club front, it appears that at long last, we are close to finalising all relevant issues associated with the ‘Hawks on Second Avenue’ site with Ryde Council and the various other Government bodies, and this will allow the Club to finally decide on this site’s future.
In other Club news I am pleased to advise that Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club has agreed to be the Major Sponsor as well as Training Partner sponsor of the Eastwood Ryde Netball Association in a new Competition called the Netball NSW Premier League Competition, which will commence in 2016. Eastwood Ryde Netball Association has been part of the local community for 60 years and oversees a fantastic sporting opportunity for 4000, young people (and some not so young) in their various competitions. Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club has been a strong supporter of the association for over 20 years and we view the additional sponsorship for the Premier League team a great extension to this community partnership, as well as a great opportunity for aspiring young netballers.
The Club Grants Scheme for assistance to various local community groups has also been completed for 2015. Presentations to a number of charities and community groups will take place in August. It should be noted that last year
the Club donated $490,000 in Grants and ‘in-kind’ donations to this Scheme. It appears that this figure will again be donated this year.
The Club recently hosted the 100th year Anniversary of the Balmain Referees’ association. The event was held in the Club’s Heritage Function centre with a capacity attendance. The many celebrity guests in the gathering entertained the audience and gave an insight into the association’s past achievements. The Club was presented with a framed referee’s jumper, which included the names of many famous members of this great association over the past 100 years. The Club has been the Major Sponsor of this Association for a number of years now and we have agreed to further continue our support for the next four years, from Season 2016.
July 2015 saw the introduction of some new smoking regulations. The first, “No smoking in areas where food is consumed” will have minimum impact on this Club; our food service areas have been smoke free for over 20 years. The second new regulation prohibits persons smoking within four metres of the entry of a hospitality outlet. The club introduced measures some time ago in preparation for this new regulation and it should have minimum impact on members and guests.
In the coming months the Club will be undertaking some minor renovations to update some of our areas that are showing signs of age. These details will be advertised when they are finalised.
Once again, I wish to thank all Members for their continued support, and hope that you all enjoy the various activities your Club provides both now and in the future.
Keith Aggett. President
THE WESTS TIGERS STATE CUP TEAM IS PROUDLY SPONSORED BY RYDE-EASTWOOD HAWKS
Since the last report, over the last 11 matches played the West Tigers’ State Cup team has gone from the top four on the competition ladder to close to bottom. Of these matches, they have won four and lost seven, and it will take a massive improvement for the team to reach the semi-finals with only seven games remaining this season.
In some of their matches the team would achieve a handy lead only to be defeated through a complete turnaround in the latter stages. For Coach Paul Fletcher it has been frustrating to watch the matches unfold. It appears that a great number of these players are, unfortunately, not up to the standard required. This is borne out by the fact that in the 16 matches played the team has used 39 players. If a solid core of players can be held together for the remainder of the season then hopefully they can salvage some respectability in what has been a huge letdown. Results since last report:
The Annual General Meeting of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club will be held in the Willandra Room at the Club on Thursday 19th November at 7.30pm. It’s almost seven years since our resident caterer, Sidney Ho, launched his fantastic Cantonese taste of Yum Cha upstairs in the old Hawk’s Nest Restaurant. Fast approaching its seventh birthday, Yum Cha is still going strong in the Golden Hawk Chinese Restaurant.
Served lunchtimes from Tuesdays to Sundays, 11.00am until 3.00pm, Sidney’s style of Yum Cha is ever popular with regular customers and newcomers eager to experience the great taste of Yum Cha.
For the uninitiated, Yum Cha is a term in Cantonese that literally means drink tea. Sidney says, “It refers to the custom in Cantonese speaking areas of Southern China of eating small servings of different foods served dim sum style, while sipping Chinese Tea.”
Traditionally the dishes come in small portions and include meat, seafood and vegetables, typically steamed or fried, as well as desserts and fruit. Yum Cha is an ideal way for colleagues, family or friends to share a wide variety of Chinese taste sensations. “We cook
all menu items from fresh ingredients,” Sidney adds, “and we strive to make our food as authentic as possible to give our customers the ultimate Yum Cha experience.” With individual dishes starting from a very reasonable $4, it’s no wonder that customers keep coming back.
“It’s gone from strength to strength,” Sidney says, “and sometimes it’s difficult to find a table during some lunchtimes as it becomes so busy.”
Coupled with a main menu that features some beautiful Chinese dishes and a bustling atmosphere to soak up, the Golden Hawk has become a dining destination of choice for many locals.

Our resident caterer, Sidney Ho, has seen more than a few changes during his near 30-year tenure running the club’s popular Palm Court Bistro. Located on the ground floor, the bistro offers a wide range of Asian and Western style meals at affordable prices, with ample seating inside and out, and two kids’ play areas adjoining the bistro.
“We like to offer our customers a wide variety of menu items,” Sidney explains. “We know from experience that when families come here to dine they like the fact there is something for everyone on our menu.”
You only have to witness the weekend queues lining up to understand how popular the bistro is. Sidney’s staff are constantly on the go to keep the service moving, and with the smiling face of our

concierge to meet and seat customers, it makes for an enjoyable dining experience. And any day of the week the club’s staff table is always occupied at some point by a hungry work colleague!
Sidney recently introduced his ‘Family Italian Feast’ to the bistro menu on Wednesday nights, a taste of Italy coming right to the heart of Ryde-Eastwood. Customers may select any two of several pizza or pasta options and add that to 4 scoops of gelato with Belgian waffle for a special price of $29.90. (Members’ price).
“It’s something new,” Sidney says, “Which gives members another choice when they visit the Palm Court.”
Sidney’s Family Italian Feast and Affogato offer is too good to miss.

This year, thanks to the organisation of one of our club members, Gavin Roberts, our club took part in a Sydney wide photographic celebration entitled, “Head On”. Head On is a photo celebration by photographers of images captured and shared. Our exhibition, which was opened on the evening of May 25th, and ran until May 31st, displayed images captured by our members. The photographs were on display here at the club and were enjoyed by many of the RELC patrons. This was a first for our club and we hope that it will continue so that club patrons can continue to share in and enjoy the work of the camera club. June saw club members enjoy each other’s company and the photographic opportunities that Taronga Zoo presented. We don’t just take pictures. June also provided us with the viewing of many wonderful photographs taken by club members and by photographers from other clubs. Our two set competitions subjects of Grunge, and Action / Motion, provided us with challenges and opportunities with some wonderful photographic results. You never know what you can achieve until given the opportunity. And many of the judges that visit our club share with us excellent advice that assists our photography to grow. If you would like to be a part of these experiences, come and join us. We thank Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and its directors for their ongoing support, and especially for the refreshments they so kindly provide for us at each of our Committee meetings and Monday night meetings. You can find out more about out club and its activities at – www.pbase.com/relccc John Maynard.
The Club Championship Preliminary Round-Robin tournament is substantially complete, with the following players progressing to the Round-Robin finals tournament in October and November: Group A – Arthur Huynh and either Bill Gletsos or Natharrel Sentiasa (playoff required); Group B – Donato Mallari and Rob Watson; Group C – Richard Galwey and Stephen Liu. Handicap winners in each division were: Group A – Natharrel Sentiasa (if he loses playoff with Bill Gletsos), otherwise Noptar Simamora; Group B – Jason Pan; Group C – Tereza Grbin and Les Mikolajczyk. We have one team in the Interclub ‘Grade Matches’ competition in the U1500 division. After six rounds (with four to go), the team is in third place in a field of six teams. As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. Visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub. blogspot.com. The fishing club organises monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips, mostly on the first Sunday of the month. All Ryde & Eastwood League Club members are welcome to join the outing as guest members.
The departure time is 5am and the return arrival time is around 2:30pm. The boat is a 50-footer with toilet facility and offers plenty of space on deck. The cost is $50 each. Fishing gear is available for hire from the skipper but baits are not provided. Interested club members should contact Mr Michael Cheng at 9614 1918 or direct their enquiries by Email at michaelcheng@optusnet.com.au. For further details you are invited to attend the monthly fishing club meeting as guests on the third Thursday of each month at 8.00pm. The fishing spots are generally about 5Km east of North Head at about 40-80m deep. Types of fish caught include morwongs, flathead, snapper, sweeps and pigfish. Results of the past three fishing trips are;
May: Trip cancelled due to inclement weather.
June: 12 members attended the trip. It was a fine day with light wind and flat sea. Action was ordinary and the total number of fish caught was 59 with a total weight of 32 Kg.
July: 12 members attended the trip. It was a fine day with moderate wind. Action was good with frequent biting. The total number of fish landed was 101 with a total weight of 48 Kg.
Round three of the Stableford Trophy was battled out at Gordon, a new venue this year. Our winners on the day were Robert Wood, A Grade, and Sharon Norton, B Grade. Runner-up prizes on the day were awarded to Tony Tedesco and Jeff Ackers. We don’t often have a washed out game but unfortunately Windsor (host of the third round of Matchplay) was a no-go zone this year after a week of heavy rain in Sydney. Fox Hills was the next venue with medals up for grabs, and congratulations go to Steve Ferns and Reg Meharg, a first-time medal winner. Runners-up prizes were awarded to Rick Beves and Peter Lau. The third round of Matchplay was contested at Richmond, which means the final four, Steve Ferns vs Ulla Wood and Robert Wood vs Tony Campbell, tussle it out at Lynwood for a spot in the finals – good luck everyone. On the day, medal honours went to Steve Ferns and Dave Whybro. Runners-up prizes were awarded to Robert Wood and Keith Chan. The final round of the Stableford trophy was another new course on the calendar – The Coast, and from all accounts a lucky day for all as the wind didn’t take over. Congratulations to the winners on the day, Steve Ferns and Dave Whybro. Runners-up on the day were Robert Wood and Sharon Norton. Congratulations to Robert Wood as the overall winner, and Eric Goh, runner-up. Happy golfing til next time. Don’t forget to check the website for full results www.relgolfclub.com Annika.
The indoor bowls club members were deeply saddened at the unexpected death of our President, Claire Grebert. Claire is thought to have been the longest participating member of the Indoor Bowls Club. She was greatly respected as a person and a talented bowler, and is sadly missed by all members. Congratulations to the following members that have been selected to play in the NSW Indoor Bowls team in Warrnambool, Vic, in August: Pat Petty, Narelle Waldock, Cath Lynn, Jim Harvey, Doreen Anderson, Jenny Loveridge, Michael Andersch, Kerri Lane, Ron Asser and Peter Yates. Good luck to all! Our district again won the Metropolitan in June. Congratulations to Pat Petty, Narelle Waldock, Linda Bale, Sandy Tam, Jenny Loveridge, Graham Bibb, Michael Andersch, Kerri Lane, Ron Asser, Michael Wooky and Jeffrey Tam. We were pleased to welcome our patron, Mr Jack King to our ‘Christmas in July’ lunch and thank Sidney Ho for a very enjoyable meal. New members are welcome to join our club. Ladies play Weds 10.30am2pm; mixed play Thurs 7pm-10pm. Phone Narelle 02 8065 9284 or Cath 0413 600 019.
As always, the Seniors are still very active with meetings twice a month, day trips (once a month), trips away, monthly walks, and every week at 1.30pm on a Thursday, we play a game of cards (solo). Over the last three months we have been on a tour of Roughly
House, Dural, with a delicious morning tea of scones with jam and cream at Geranium Cottage, followed by a lunch of fish and chips Berowra Waters. We visited Doyles, Watsons Bay, for our “Winter Special”. We received a guided tour by Mrs Judith Dunn who told us about the Battle of Vinegar Hill, where we visited sites in Toongabbie and Castle Hill Government Farms, where many Irish convicts worked in appalling conditions. After lunch we had a tour of Rouse Hill Historic House. We enjoyed a wonderful “Christmas in July” outing to the Waterview Restaurant, Berowra Waters, with good company, good food and great entertainment. In August we hope to travel to Lithgow, followed by the Central Coast in September and then all aboard the Riverboat Postman in October. Fingers crossed the weather will be kind to us for all these outings. We meet on the first and third Thursday of every month in the function rooms at the Club. Our joining fee is $5 and all Seniors are most welcome. For more information please contact Marie Weston, Secretary, on 9638 7419.
The 2015 Autumn Competition has just finished with mixed results from the RELSC teams. The Division 5 team blitzed their opponents, finishing in 1st place – congratulations and best of luck in the upcoming finals series. For our other two teams, the winds of good fortune did not blow in the right direction in this competition, with the Division 4 team placing 6th and the Division 6 team placing 7th. For some sports, the “off-season” is a chance to heal current injuries or take a much needed break before the next competition, but for the well-seasoned and dedicated Squash Club members it merely heralds the next tournament - the internal Squash Club Championships. The 2015 draw holds much promise of wonderful matchups in both divisions and we can’t wait to crown the new club champions. Best of luck to all of the competitors – stay tuned for the results in the next journal. As this report goes to print, the Squash Club has already submitted their teams for the upcoming Spring Competition. No two days are the same at RydeEastwood for Lisa Kradenian, the Heritage Function Centre Manager. On any one day Lisa could be juggling several functions simultaneously.
“It’s all part of the job,” says Lisa as her phone rings with another function enquiry. A typical day for Lisa includes meeting clients, taking bookings, organising staff, dressing up rooms and doing resets. “Sometimes you have to think on your feet. There’s never really a dull moment!”
The Heritage Function Centre occupies level one above the club’s centrepiece, the beautiful indoor waterfall. The space comprises six dividable rooms, partitioned with operable walls which can all fold back to cater for weddings, parties or banquets for up to 300 guests. The centre is extremely versatile in the options it provides. On the other end of the spectrum Lisa also books smaller meeting rooms for as few as half a dozen attendees.
“That’s the beauty of our function centre,” she says. “Using the flexible function space, our corporate events range from smaller seminars right up to larger ‘Expos’ and awards presentations. Essentially, our aim is to make our clients’ special occasion or corporate event as memorable as possible. We offer a wide range of catering options, from cocktail menus to buffets and set menus. Add to that a great variety of wines and other beverages and we can cater for all functions within our footprint.”
Accessible via lift, the stylish and relaxed lobby area is perfect as a pre-function or breakout area. When it comes to covering all the client’s bases Lisa leaves no detail to chance. “We can organise chair covers, balloons, flowers and decorations, DJs, MCs, jukeboxes, karaoke and other entertainment.”
Plus where else in the local area would you find:
• Free undercover parking for 450 vehicles.
• Convenient central location.
• Hire of audio-visual equipment.
• Sound and light technicians.
• Business facilities, including photocopying, faxing and Internet hot spots.
• Full in-room catering plus access to The Coffee Club, Golden Hawk Chinese Restaurant and Palm Court Bistro.
Thinking about booking your next function in the local area? Then why not give Lisa a call. She’d love to hear from you.
