PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Dear Members,

As I’m sure you all were, I was hoping for a return to some normality after our Covid experiences of 2020 and 2021. Alas, it was not to be with recent floods, industry shortages and global factors continuing to bring pressure to bear on our industry.

Ryde-Eastwood Leagues prides itself on assisting its local and broader communities. Over time we have always looked at where we can support those in need. Recently, the Board approved $50,000 to support communities affected by the floods, and also donated to our regular charities such as the World’s Greatest Shave and the McGrath Foundation.

This certainly got me thinking of our own Ryde-Eastwood and Thirroul communities, and how important our clubs are to our respective communities. Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club adopted the saying “At the Heart of the Community” a little while back, and it is something we truly believe in. As a member of the club your participation and loyalty has led to our success, so all members should also be very proud.

Our club, like many in the industry, is not as forthcoming as it should be at informing the community of the all the good things that we are able to do. The more successful the club, the more we are able to assist our local community. The list of the organisations that you as members assist is on display in our foyer. We continually provide aid to organisations such as the Adam Gardiner Fund, Ryde and Westmead Hospitals, Care Flight, and Sir Roden & Lady Cutler Foundation to name a few; in addition to the support of our service clubs, including Rotary, Lyons, and Probus etc. Without our members’ vital support, we would not be able to assist the many organisations listed on the display board.

On top of this, Ryde-Eastwood and Club Thirroul are both employers of significance in their respective communities. We pride ourselves on the quality of our staff and the relationship our staff have with our customers. This, together with pathways for advancement, assists us with staff retention, thus enhancing the relationship with our customers. Where practical, we also try and use local suppliers and contractors from our Ryde-Eastwood and Thirroul communities.

As reported in my last President’s Report, on behalf of our 35,000 members we continue to build our relationship and communication with Ryde Council to assist in the future plans of the West Ryde community, particularly east of the railway line where the club is a major property owner.

Your club is in a very competitive environment and needs to continually evolve and adapt to all modern-day challenges as they arise. In conclusion, I would like to personally thank you, as members, and your guests for your loyal and unwavering attendance at both clubs. The Board, senior management team and staff continue working hard to move both clubs forward after the recent unplanned events of fires, floods, Covid, and overseas unrest etc. All of which adds to our increased cost of living. But if we all pull together in the same direction, we can work to ensure the future of our clubs. And you, like me, have every right to be very proud of your organisation. Thank you. See you in the club.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

CEO’S REPORT

Dear Members,

Firstly, I would like to welcome our members and guests back to the club for 2022. Once again, it has been an interesting few months but we are now progressing out of the 2021 interruptions to the club and, indeed, all our lives.

The club continues to manage Covid requirements with a key focus on providing measures for the comfort and safety of our members. These measures include social distancing and managing numbers in key areas within the club, as well as a strong focus on hygiene, all important factors in reducing risk. In March, after opening the club fully to all members and guests, we were pleased to see many familiar faces returning to the club.

The club continues to build after lockdown, with a steady increase of special events and promotions for all members and guests. Our major Cash and Car Renewal promotion starts in May with $140,000 of cash and prizes up for grabs, as well as the chance to win extra entry tickets through June and July. Our entertainment continues to build with more upcoming ticketed shows and our free Friday night retro DJ and bands.

We continue to build our F&B offering with new additions to the Social Kitchen menu. Bamboo Blossom has been a great addition to the club with its contemporary Asian flavours and some more Yum Cha options included on the menu. I encourage members to try this unique modern Asian flavour experience.

After two difficult years, the club has also had time to reflect on our improved offering for members. Our Fitness Centre has a planned upgrade of equipment, including cardio and strength, as well as the addition of ‘virtual’ classes that offer a unique offering to members. The development of a new office area is underway in order to open up our functions space due to increased demand for social and corporate events.

Moving forward, we continue to manage our strategic projects. Club Thirroul has recently received DA approvals with Wollongong Council for our Gaming, TAB, and Bar renovation, as well as a new F&B outdoor seating and entertainment area. We are finalising tenders and will look to start this in the coming months. These key offerings at Club Thirroul are not only for current members to enjoy but also to meet the needs of the community as we continue to grow and build.

We are also excited on the progress of our Seniors Housing project. At the time of this update, the club is engaging with Council and key stakeholders to progress the design. We aim to submit a Development Application in the near future and look forward to working with Council to progress the assessment before moving forward into the next stage of the project.

Although 2021 was a difficult year, the club remains positive and confident that we will continue to grow our member offering in 2022. I would like to thank all staff, in particular our management team, who have worked through very difficult and unique events over the last year, but continue to focus on providing the best possible outcome for our members and guests. Once again, we could not do this without you, our loyal members, and we look forward to your continued enjoyment of the club and its facilities.

ERNA HAWKS’ 2022 NEWS

Hawks U23s Head Coach Therri Ellison says, “We have started the season fitter and stronger than in 2021 and the girls can see that we are competitive. We have retained many of our players from 2021, with a new shooter and defender in the mix. I expect some big things from our strong defensive unit and look forward to how our attacking end blend together. The most important thing is we watch the team grow and develop as we continue the unfinished business of 2021.”

ERNA welcomes back Anita Keelan, the former NSW Swifts premiership-winning Assistant Coach, who will be Head Coach of the Hawks Opens team in 2022. Anita has a long association with Eastwood Ryde Netball. Anita returns to ERNA having held coaching roles within Suncorp Super Netball, previous national league teams, Australian 21&U World Youth Cup / Australian Institute of Sport, the NSW Institute of Sport and Netball NSW programmes. Anita has just been appointed to lead the technical delivery of Netball Australia’s pathway strategy and is balancing this new role with coaching the Hawks. Anita will be supported by Nicole Barrett and Debbie DeansSmith as Assistant Coaches, and Jay Rickard Bell as Apprentice Coach.

Anita states, “It will be a challenging year of blending players with the complication of COVID, but we are all looking forward to improving and enjoying our netball and the opportunity to play. Just being together and being grateful to play each week is fantastic. Netball is constantly evolving and to be part of it right now is exciting.”

Both Hawks teams have been hard at training on the netball court twice a week and in the gym most Saturdays at The Fitness Edge working hard in the pre-season. Both teams have played a number of training games, a highlight the Opens team’s pre-season match against the Fiji National Team, the Fijian Pearls. 2022 is only going to get more exciting in April when the NSW Origin Premier League returns, and the Hawks look to fly high. Watch this space.

Club & Community News

THE WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE AT RYDE-EASTWOOD

Having been a member of the club for over 40 years and having battled multiple types of cancer, Elvira Allan knows the importance of coming together to battle the disease. With an original fundraising goal of $500 by shaving her head at the club’s World’s Greatest Shave event, Elvira set out to fight blood cancer! As her family and friends reached out, Elvira kept moving the fundraising goalposts, passing $500, then $1,000, then $2,000 and eventually reaching $3,000+!

On Wednesday 16 March, surrounded by a cheering crowd of family, friends, and members, Elvira counted out over 34 $100 bills into the WGS bucket before taking the main stage to shave her head. Elvira’s final total was an astounding $3,520! The World’s Greatest Shave has become an annual event at the club, with members gathering and cheering for each other as they shave, cut, or colour their hair in support of The Leukaemia Foundation.

This year, with the Board’s generous assistance, the Club is donating a whopping $10,000 to Leukaemia Foundation.

We thank Elvira and everyone in the Ryde-Eastwood family who participated in this year’s event and helped raise vital funds to fight blood cancer. You are all champions!

THE MCGRATH FOUNDATION PINK WEEK

Each year the club turns Pink for one week in February to raise vital funds for the McGrath Foundation, which funds McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia. These nurses help and support individuals and their families experiencing breast cancer by providing physical, psychological, and emotional support.

This year, members showed their support, dressing up in their ‘Pinkest’ outfits for Bingo and Trivia while the club also donated $1 for every membership sold during the

week and 10% of all raffle ticket sales, with Social Kitchen and the Coffee Club donating $1 from popular dishes. Fitness Edge members rallied their support by attending special pink classes and making donations throughout the week for their chance to win a special SCG pink polo shirt and cap signed by the legendary Aussie cricket star, Glenn McGrath.

All our efforts from the week raised a total of $1,490, which the Club’s Board generously rounded up to $4,000 to be donated to the McGrath Foundation. Thank you everyone!

SENIORS HOUSING @ RYDE-EASTWOOD

Ryde-Eastwood Leagues continues to develop its vision for its Seniors Housing Development for members and the wider community. As the project progresses, we will continue to keep all parties informed and involved to ensure the best outcome both for future residents and the community.

Ryde-Eastwood Leagues has over 36,000 members with more than 23,000 senior members expected over the next five years, and the development of a Seniors Living Community provides an extension not only to our current member offering but will also benefit the broader community.

The vision for the project is:

To provide high quality, modern seniors living accommodation with the numerous social services and facilities for the community that the club currently provides, with the development located in close proximity to the existing West Ryde Town Centre.

The club is engaging with Council and key stakeholders to progress the design at the time of this update. We have taken on board the feedback and comments from our members’ survey, as well as receiving positive correspondence from members and the community, who are also looking forward to seeing this vision evolve. The club aims to submit a

Development Application in the near future and looks forward to working with Council in the coming months to progress the assessment before moving forward into the next stage of the project.

The Seniors Living Community is designed as an aspiring offering to meet the evolving needs of Ryde-Eastwood members and the broader community. The design principles will allow residents to ‘age-in-place’ and provide exemplary facilities and services that offer a premium product above the standard of the existing residential market in the area. As such, it will become an aspirational and relevant offering well into the future.

We will continue to engage with members and key stakeholders to gather feedback and comment on the vision. This will ensure we take onboard all factors in the village offering and maximise the link it creates with the club. We will also advise when an expression of interest will be available and provide information on how members can be involved in this process.

If you have any questions, please email us at seniorshousing@releagues.com.au

FOOTBALL REPORT

Dear Members,

Season 2021 was blighted with Covid interruptions and was eventually called off. Season 2022 has not started that brightly either. The weather has played havoc with our training grounds and led to the cancellation of many of our trial games. We were able to have one trial for our Sydney Shield side, against Moorebank Rams, which we won 38-32.

Our A Grade side was involved in a 9 a-side tournament at Blackmore Oval; the team made it to the semi-final, drawing the game, but unfortunately did not progress to the Grand Final due to a count back on a ‘for and against’ tally of points total.

Also, our Under 20s trailed against the Woy Woy Roosters away at Woy Woy. On Sunday 27th March a late trial was organised to play Wentworthville Magpies at TG Milner Oval, which we won 16-10. At this stage we are unsure if any other trials have been organised; however, it would be good if this could happen as our Junior League competition does not start until 1st May.

THE SYDNEY SHIELD AND RON MASSEY COMPETITIONS

started on the 20th March, and at this stage we are two rounds into the competition. Our Sydney Shield results thus far: Round 1 at Ringrose Park, Hawks played Wentworthville and won 28-20; Round 2 at TG Milner Oval, Hawks played Penrith Brothers and won 24-16.

Ron Massey results thus far: Round 1 at TG Milner Oval, Hawks played Western Suburbs Magpies and won 38-6; Round 2 at TG Milner Oval, Hawks played Blacktown Workers and lost 30-16. This game was played in atrocious weather conditions while also playing against a bigger and faster team. It wasn’t for the lack of trying but we were beaten by a better side.

With the poor weather conditions we have been experiencing, and training grounds closed with trial games cancelled, it has been a credit to both teams and staff to get the players ready for the start of the 2022 competition.

LADY HAWKS

It is with great disappointment to inform members that we will not be having a women’s team this season. At the required date of registration, we only had six players who were fully committed to play in the 2022 season. So with only six available players, unfortunately we had to withdraw our nomination.

On Monday 14th March 2022 we held our Season Launch for the Ron Massey and Sydney Shield players and officials. It was very well-received with approximately 80-90 persons in attendance and the players were presented with their playing kit. A date has yet to be decided for the season launch for our Under 18s, Under 20s and A Grade sides.

As always, all upcoming games will be advertised on the Leagues Club’s screens throughout the club and also on social media platforms. We look forward to seeing you supporting our Mighty Hawks in the 2022 season, and for all our Hawks news - Watch this Space.
