PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Dear Member,

I would like to welcome our members back to some normality at the club. Having said that, just as we were looking forward to putting all the challenges of 2020 behind us, we found ourselves dealing with the consequences of the extraordinary weather in the early months of 2021.

On a positive note, members have been telling me how good it is to be back at their club, which makes me realise the important role our club plays in the companionship of our members and the wider community. This is something we probably all took for granted before 2020. It is good to see so many familiar faces again.

The Board and Management have been busy putting into place projects such as the Seniors Living development, finalisation of the Club Thirroul amalgamation, and we are pleased to finally announce that we have successfully purchased from Council the laneway that surrounds our club.

Therefore, the planning of our future club has commenced. On top of this, after the difficult circumstances of 2020 with COVID-19, it has made us look very closely at our core business. Currently, we are closely assessing what we do, why we do it and how we can do it better. Our community around us is ever-changing, and we realise that we must change with it. The way we did things five to ten years ago may not be as productive now because today’s society demands more. If we are to remain not only competitive but also strive to remain a leader in our field, we need to analyse our business practices in all areas of the club. We are looking to implement strategies to make this happen, with details to follow and information on the commencement of some projects pencilled in for the next journal, subject to confirmation.

As I mentioned earlier, our club plays a vital role in companionship for our members. I think we all took this camaraderie for granted until the club went into shutdown and we were plunged into isolation from friends and family. The Board, management and staff realise now, more than ever, the important role your club plays in our community. I would also like to thank all our Intra clubs for the important role they play for the enjoyment of our members. You will see in this journal that we feature the Fishing, Golf, Bowlers’, Seniors, Chess and Euchre clubs, just to name a few. A good example of this is our Travel and Social Club Secretary, Gordon Irving, who is busily arranging excursions to Club Thirroul, Mother’s Day lunches, Gala lunches, a visit to Picton, and listening to members’ suggestions for ways to keep the companionship alive and well. This is just one example of how many of our Intra clubs provide service to our members.

As President, I am so proud that we provide our members with such services, from babies learn-to-swim classes to seniors’ week and everything in between. Members are welcome to contact the secretaries of our Intra clubs for membership and function itineraries, as well as contacting club reception for any further information.

In the meantime, keep well and safe. See you in the Club.

FOOTBALL REPORT

Dear Member,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Easter and were once again able to attend family gatherings.

2021 TRIAL GAME RESULTS

Sydney Shield Trial Games

Our first Sydney Shield trial was played against Moorebank Rams with the win going to the Rams in a very close affair. Conditions were wet and slippery but overall, the ground (Cressy Road Field HCC) stood up well. We had not seen previously in action over half the players (28) trialling. Coach Dane Morgan was happy with the overall result and received plenty of insight into the players’ skill and ability. Our second Sydney Shield trial was played against East Campbelltown with our Hawks winning quite comfortably. Conditions were warm and very humid on a fantastic Lidcombe Oval field. Coach Dane Morgan was pleased with the overall result, especially the team’s defensive effort in hot conditions.

Ron Massey Cup - As members may not be aware, this is our first foray into the Ron Massey Cup competition and our opponent in this trial was Mt Pritchard. The result was very pleasing with the Hawks winning the trial. Many of our previous Sydney Shield Players played and performed at this higher level with some very good performances from the forwards, who held their own with edge runners and outside backs looking very sharp. Our coach, Jarod Farlow, was very pleased with our first up showing. Three of our better players have been rewarded for their efforts over the summer with an invitation to participate in West Tigers Trials. The Hawks’ second trial was at Lidcombe Oval against the Western Suburbs Magpies.

The Hawks triumphed by 6 tries to 3. Again, previous Sydney Shield Players played and performed well at this higher level. Conditions were hot and humid, which took its toll on both sides, affecting their skill level. Overall, coach Jarod Farlow was pleased once again with our good performance. Unfortunately, we sustained two serious injuries to both our selected Hookers, with both players sidelined in terms of weeks at this stage: Tristan Evans-Tsoi with a suspected broken wrist, and Bennet Wheelhouse with a hamstring injury. The trial results were pleasing for both our Ron Massey and Sydney Shield teams.

2021 COMPETITION GAME RESULTS

Sydney Shield Round 1 - The Sydney Shield team received a reality check with a 34-6 loss against Penrith Brothers, at Penrith. After coming off good trial form, the new Sydney Shield team lost its way in wet and heavy conditions. They look forward to making amends in the next game against East Campbelltown Eagles.

Sydney Shield Round 2 - Unfortunately, due to extreme weather conditions across the NSW East Coast, this round was postponed and will be played at a later date.

Sydney Shield Round 3 was a scheduled Bye.

Sydney Shield Round 4 - This game was played at TG Milner Oval against St Marys who are considered one of the top sides in this competition. Unfortunately, this proved correct as we suffered a heavy loss, 54-24. Although this was a big defeat, the coach Dan Morgan said he could still see some positives as the players are still getting to know each other’s game.

Ron Massey Cup Round 1 - It was a great return for the Hawks in the NSWRL Ron Massey Cup, the team playing Blacktown Workers in their first Ron Massey Cup game. The Hawks were in control for pretty much the whole game, including a dominant first half, scoring 5 tries to 1. Our forwards ran strongly from the kickoff, making good inroads in every set of six, in particular Angus McEllory, who had a great game and was awarded Players’ Player. Our Backs were exciting too, especially in the first half with Curtis Wilson making breaks at will. Centres Toni Tali and Semisi Kioa were making their presence felt with every touch of the football. Halves Adam Rizk and Mitchell Gray started off where they left season 2020 with good combinations on both sides of the field.

Ron Massey Cup Round 2 - Unfortunately, due to extreme weather conditions across the NSW East Coast, this round was postponed and will be played at a later date. Ron Massey Cup Round 3 was a scheduled Bye

Ron Massey Cup Round 4 - As with the Sydney Shield team, our opponent was St Marys with the game contested at TG Milner Oval. St Marys are the benchmark team in this competition and they certainly lived up to this expectation by beating the Hawks 58-22, a very disappointing result. Having not played for three weeks certainly showed in a lack of match fitness, which reflected the final score. We look forward to seeing an improvement in our Hawks team in the coming weeks. Until next time, watch this space.

The World’s Greatest Shave at Ryde-Eastwood

On 10 March, the club hosted its third consecutive World’s Greatest Shave to raise funds for The Leukaemia Foundation in the fight to beat blood cancer. Once again, the support on the night and generosity of members was amazing, whether they were having their heads and beards shaved or hair coloured or generously donating to the cause. And of course, the Ryde-Eastwood staff wanted to join in and be a part of this memorable night. A fantastic $2,000 was raised, including a club Board donation. We thank everyone who supported this important event.

ON THE CHARGE TO BEAT CANCER

In March, the club and the Fitness Edge put on their running shoes to join the Cancer Council’s March Charge to ‘Set and Smash’ their March fitness goal. And smash it we did!

The club raised a fantastic $8,000, beating its target of $2,000 four times over! It was a great collective effort by all to raise funds for life-saving cancer research. We thank everyone for their hard work in making this happen.

$8,000 RAISED

THE MCGRATH FOUNDATION PINK WEEK

For one week in February each year, we like to turn the club pink in support of the McGrath Foundation, which funds McGrath Breast Care Nurses who support individuals and their families experiencing breast cancer.

This year we are proud to announce that the club raised $2,000 for the Foundation. The Palm Court Bistro and Coffee Club made donations from meal sales and the club donated a portion of each membership sale to the cause. As you will see from the photos, The Fitness Edge really got into the fundraising spirit, as did our bingo players in our Pink Bingo event on 24 February.

We thank all members and staff for their generosity in helping to support this important community cause.

ERNA HAWKS PREMIER LEAGUE NETBALL 2021

Game one of our 2021 Premier League saw both ERNA Hawks teams come away with a win on the night over Central Coast Heart.

The U23s team, which is a very new look team with new players and coaches, led the way. There were a lot of pre-game nerves as many in the team had never played this level of netball before. As the game went on the Hawks showed their skills and fitness on the night and were far superior to their opponents and ended up with a 19 goal win. A great start to the season for the young ERNA Hawks.

Next the Opens were on court, also with a few changes to their line up. Over the years Central Coast Heart and the Hawks Opens have had some huge battles, winning one Grand Final apiece over the last three years.

The energy on court was tough with the score see sawing throughout the first quarter and finishing even at quarter time. The Hawks had a great second quarter and went out to a solid lead at half time. The second half continued to be a tough encounter but Heart were never able to catch the Hawks, who went on to win by 9 goals.

THE ERNA HAWKS ARE OFF TO A GOOD START. BRING ON ROUND 2.

CHESS CLUB

In March we held our annual Rapid Championship tournament (20 minutes with a 10-second increment), which was won by Arthur Huynh with 7/9, just half a point ahead of Rob Watson and Michael Wang on 6½. The U1600 division was won by Jimmy Zeng on 5/9 with Vince Chiara, Norm Greenwood, Josh Li and Felix Wang on 4½/9. We are currently limited to a maximum of 30 players in our Sports Bar space, so the Annual General Meeting will be held when we can accommodate the full club, followed by the club championship. As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. Visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot.com. Contact Rob Watson (0408 463 759).

EUCHRE CLUB

The Euchre Club is in full swing again after the long break owing to COVID. Everyone was keen to get back and catch up with each other, and we are all enjoying playing cards again. We would welcome any Euchre players to come along and join us in the Sports Bar at 7.20pm on a Wednesday night. For further information please contact President Don Baillie on 9869 2857.

THE FISHING CLUB

It is good to have our club magazine back. In 2020 we had eight charter boat trips for the year, though with reduced numbers due to COVID-19 spacing. On 26th March 2021 we had our annual presentation night in the Golden Hawk Restaurant with 26 members and guests attending. Our fishing club patron and director, Graeme Aggett, presented trophies. The Keith Aggett Trophy for the biggest fish went to Sam Sundar with a 2.8kg groper. Well done Sam. The L J Hayes Trophy for the heaviest bag of fish for the year also went to Sam Sundar with 64.1kg of fish. Sam also had the biggest bag in 2019. The runner-up for the 2020 year was Michael Cheng with 35.7kg of cleaned fish and Winston Foo the runner up with the second biggest fish, a 1.46 kg morwong, beating Michael Cheng’s 1.45kg morwong, a very close margin indeed. The Fishing Club organises

monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Interested club members, contact Sam Sundar on 0413 000 303. Monthly Fishing Club meetings are on the third Thursday of each month at 8pm. Fishing Club President, Trevor Fahey.

SENIORS CLUB

At long last, Ryde Eastwood Seniors is up and running again after a year to forget. Covid closed the seniors club down for most of 2020, and to finish the year off three of our long-standing committee resigned. We had to farewell our secretary of 20 years, Marie Weston and her husband Graham, along with one of the last foundation members, Zelna Smith. We wish them all well for the future. The Seniors Club meets on the 3rd Thursday of every month in

the auditorium. If you are looking for friendship, walks, fun and outings with likeminded seniors, then come and join Ryde-Eastwood Leagues’ Seniors. Membership is $5 per year, and to join you must be a financial member of RydeEastwood Leagues Club. For more information contact: Therese Sloane 0403 213 560.

TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB

Hello to all. Since our last update, we held our Annual General Meeting on the 7th February. Details from that meeting are: Elected members: President: Brenda Paterson. Vice-President: Ray McDonnell. Secretary: Maria Armstrong. Treasurer: John Dixon. Social Secretary; Patricia Stewart. Committee members: Milly Farrell, Helen McClure, Robyn Newton, Elizabeth Bell and Elvie Craven. Our first trip of the year was on 17th February. We went to Towradgi Bowling club where we had a lovely lunch that we thoroughly enjoyed as we chatted happily to the members. The second trip will be in May when we are off to Umina Bowling Club; we had to postpone our original trip in April as they had a Pennant’s day scheduled and could not fit us in. I am sure we will have a great day as we always enjoy our time at their club. Then on 16 June we are going to Picton Bowling Club, where we also have a good time. The bus leaves at 9.30am from RydeEastwood Leagues Club. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun, and as the saying goes, “The more the merrier”. Hopefully all our members who were previously ill have recovered and can join us once again. Also, hoping everyone had a great Easter and trusting that the Easter bunny found you all. For further information please contact Patricia Stewart on 9743 3032 or Robyn Newton 9858 3014 or Milly Farrell 9874 4667.

SOCIAL-TRAVEL CLUB

Hey, We’re back!! After a year of being cooped up at home we have hit the ground running. Starting again was not easy, as each member had to be contacted about our first meeting in March. Unfortunately, we have had a number of members pass on and have felt the reduced numbers. Also, there have been some retirements with our longserving President, Yvonne Steel, departing the scene, and treasurer Helen Tuckwell stepping aside due to ill-health. Mr Arthur Perry has takenup the Treasurer’s position and we look forward to his input. Currently, we are pulling together a programme for the year with some new ideas and events. You will notice that we have a slight alteration in name, now incorporating “Social” Travel Club to our name and our activities! So, watch-out, we are on our way in May with events that will act as a warm-up to other events. If you are at a loose-end, then come and join The Social-Travel Club. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 2pm in the Willandra Room. CONTACT: Jill Kemp 0419 266 530
