Dear Member,
With Christmas and New Year celebrations now over, I hope that all members had a great time with family and friends and are looking forward to seeing their plans for 2017 come to fruition.
Members would be aware of several reports I have made over recent years including my corresponding report last year regarding long term planning for the Club and adjacent property holdings. These plans are still being developed, but we are hopeful of meeting Council and other authorities early this year to determine their level of support; should this prove positive we should then be in a position to give members an overview of what is proposed.
We have also made mention of our revitalisation project for various areas within the Club and the next stage of that project, with The Coffee Club, foyer and entry areas currently underway. Please refer to the article on the adjacent page, which provides more detail on this project.
I take this opportunity to thank those members who attended the Club’s AGM in November.
As I have also mentioned previously I am disappointed at the low turnout of members for this important meeting but would like to thank those members that did turn up and voice their opinion. Whether it be support or criticism it is important that members take an interest in their Club and this is a great forum to do so.
I would also like to mention that at the Club’s AGM, Director Mr Dennis Petkovich, was awarded life membership of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, and I congratulate Dennis on being recognised for his tremendous work on behalf of the Club and its members.
The Leagues Club will again be sponsoring the Eastwood Ryde Netball Association (ERNA) in the NSW Netball Premier League. Their first season in 2016 was not as successful as hoped, mainly due to the heavy commitment of team members in other representative teams. The ERNA Hawks are hopeful of a stronger showing this year and the Club is proud to be their sponsor on behalf of Club members.
In mid-2016 your Club provided a major donation to Ryde Hospital ($54,000) towards a new portable ultrasound machine. We are pleased to announce that just prior to Christmas your Club made a further donation to Ryde Hospital for the funding of a new orthopaedic bed for their surgical unit. This new bed is designed to help patients (in particular the elderly) during orthopaedic operations, and the Club has agreed to meet the shortfall of their fundraising efforts. While not yet finalised, it is expected to be in the vicinity of $50,000. With the majority of club members living locally and a large proportion being older members of the community, your board considers this a very worthwhile use of club funds.
We look forward to another busy year, albeit a little bit disrupted because of the building works associated with the foyer and the entry. Once again, thank you for your continued support.
Keith Aggett President
The REDRLFC is proud to announce that we will sponsor the Wests Tigers State Cup team in the 2017 Intrust Super Premiership NSW, continuing our sponsorship of the past several years.
The football club is also excited to announce that it has negotiated with Wests Tigers for the Club’s traditional colours of Scarlet and White to be used in the playing strip for six away games in the 2017 season, (see image below). This is the first time that the Club’s colours have been used since the narrow defeat in the grand final of the State Cup in 2012.
As the 2017 programme has not yet been finalised we cannot advise where and when the first away game that will feature our colours will be played. Supporters are asked to keep an eye on the Club’s website and also in the club foyer for more details on this first opportunity to see the return of the Ryde-Eastwood scarlet and white.
The Football Club continues to be a major sponsor of the four junior league clubs in the local area: Carlingford Cougars, Dundas Shamrocks, Holy Cross Rhinos and North Ryde Hawks, by providing funding for uniforms. (This is in addition to the funding provided by the Leagues Club.)
The Football Club is also finalising discussions with the junior league clubs for the sponsorship of an under-19s team to play under the name Ryde-Eastwood (also in the scarlet and white colours) in a metropolitan under-19 competition. This competition is designed to provide more competition for under-19 players once they have completed their SG Ball competition commitments early in the season.
We look forward to the 2017 season.

Members will recall that we have previously advised a programme of refurbishment of many areas within the club to ensure the look remains fresh and contemporary.
Following renovations to the Auditorium and Bistro areas and a minor upgrade to the outdoor gaming area in 2016, we have commenced the next stage of refurbishment.
These works will include a refurbishment of The Coffee Club service and seating areas. Work in this area commenced in midJanuary and is scheduled to be completed by in the first week of February. In fact by the time most members read this report this first stage of the project should be complete.
The Coffee Club has been in operation at the club for over 12 years and the décor is being modernised in line with The Coffee Club’s current theming.
In conjunction with The Coffee Club refurbishment (which is being undertaken by their contractors) the Club has also engaged Paynter Dixon Constructions to make some design alterations to the perimeter of the Coffee Club.
This perimeter work, which will include new decorative screening, will be completed in conjunction with a major refurbishment of the main foyer and entry areas as well as the passageway from the foyer up to the bistro area.
The work will include major changes to the ceiling and floor surfaces, and given there is a major design change to the main entry and foyer areas this will no doubt, at times, be challenging and disruptive and include some temporary access issues in various areas while the work is in progress.
The reception and foyer areas have remained largely unchanged in design since opening in 1998 and the new modern design elements will provide a fresh new look for the “face” of the club.
We have included some plans and finish items to the right to give you a bit of a glimpse of what the finished product will look like.
Work is expected to be completed by late May.

Beverley Ambesi was one of the camera club’s first members and she is still on the committee 22 years later. We would like to thank Beverley for all her hard work and dedication and being one of our assistant competition secretary’s. Beverley is also featured on page 21 of this journal.
Pictured below is Allen Rose, our winner of The Photograph of the Year competition with his wonderful shot of a gorilla. Well done

CHESS CLUB
The 2016 RELC Chess Club Championship finals were completed in November. The winner was Donato Mallari, with Arthur Huynh second and Michael Anderson in third place. The club’s “Classic” tournament finished in early December and was won by Rob Watson with Shane Dibley and Peter Zekic sharing second place. Division 2 was won by Michael Roh with Norm Greenwood second. In early December, the club hosted the NSW Blitz Championships (5 minutes per player for the whole game), which was won by International Master Anton Smirnov with a perfect 11/11. Neil Wright came second and Blair Mandla third. The club’s annual general meeting will be held in late January 2017. It will probably be followed by the club’s Rapid Play championship tournament in the first three weeks of February. As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. 2016 was a wonderful year for the Euchre Club with many new members and very enjoyable games. We celebrated the end of the year with a dinner in the Golden Hawk Restaurant with our patron, Paul Moujalli, attending and announcing our yearly prize winners. 1st Ivy Hitchens, 2nd Rhonda Fekete, and 3rd Ray Stewart. Well done to our winners. Thank you Paul for all your support during 2016. Our winners for the months of October 2016 were 1st Rhonda Fekete, 2nd Marita Dann; and November 2016,
1st Rhonda Fekete and Vince Smith, and 2nd Ivy Hitchens and Peter Keast. An invitation is extended to Euchre players to join our games on Wednesday evenings at 7.20pm in the Willandra Room. At the conclusion a light supper is served with a friendly chat. For further information contact our President Don Baillie on 9869 2857.
The trip on 29 October started out quite choppy in the morning. By 9am conditions became very pleasant. The fishing results were only average though. Our 11 attendees caught 95 fish between them. None of the fish was over 1kg and the total weight was 38.4kgs. Sam, who is going to be hard to beat this year, had the heaviest bag of 7.4kg. Please note that we have a new fishing organiser, Sam Sundar, who is contactable on 0413 000 303. His email address is samsundar@optusnet.com.au. A big thank you to Michael Cheng, who is now concentrating on his Secretary duties only, as he has been doing both jobs these past few years. The fishing club organises monthly deep sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any interested club member should now contact Sam Sundar on the phone number or email listed above, or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday each month at 8pm (except December). Fishing Club President - Trevor Fahey.

The Indoor Bowls Club has enjoyed another successful year. Attendance has been excellent and we have welcomed new members to both our day and night games. During the year Sidney and his staff have provided us with delicious meals as we celebrated Easter, Mother’s Day, Christmas-in-July and several Christmas functions. We were also saddened at the passing of Merle Roach and more recently Betty Beck and other former members. Some of our players competed in State and Australian Championship competitions. Others who no longer play still visit and join us at functions. We thank our Patron, Mr. Jack King and the Board of Directors for their continued support. We wish members who are unwell a speedy recovery and wish everyone good health and good bowling for 2017. New members are always welcome to join our club on Wednesday (ladies) 10.15am to 2pm and Thursday (mixed) 7.15pm – 10 pm. Enquiries to Cath on 0413 600 019 or Narelle on 8065 9284.
On 2 November 2016 our much loved President, Betty Beck, passed away. Betty had been our President since the inception of the Seniors’ Club in 2000 and with only a few months break she carried on this position until a few weeks prior to her death. She so looked forward to telling her jokes at every meeting and she will be greatly missed. We have been on a wonderful trip to the Illawarra Motoring Museum where there was a magnificent
collection of immaculate automobiles through the century. The museum also contained items of use such as irons, typewriters sewing machines and tools through the years. Our Christmas Lunch was again held at the Club and a big thank you to Sidney and his staff for providing a wonderful menu. A big thank you also to Peter Beard who kept us entertained with his music throughout the day. We meet on the first and third Thursday of each month at 11am in the function rooms at the Club, and our card players (Auction Solo) meet every Thursday at 1.30pm. We also have a monthly bus trip. Our annual fee is $5. For more information please contact Marie Weston, Secretary, on 9638 7419.
December 2016 was a very busy time for Squash Club members: the Spring squash competition drew to a close as our Division 5 team finished in 6th place; the much anticipated Annual Squash Club Presentation Dinner was firmly positioned on the horizon and for our President (Ernie Speed) his prestigious commendation as December’s Sports Star of the Year (an honour jointly bestowed by The Weekly Times Newspaper and the Ryde Sports Foundation) arrived as a wonderful and very early Christmas surprise. In the same vein, February heralds more than just the end of Summer for the Squash Club and its members: the Squash Club AGM finds itself positioned very early in the new year (stay tuned for further details), a new squash competition is ushered in and once again the club looks to swell its numbers by a strong recruitment drive (spearheaded by our President). If you are interested in starting your foray into squash or maybe you are looking to return to the sport competitively, please contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348. All players are welcome.
What kind of vegetable do you get when Dumbo walks through your garden? SQUASH!
We thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas lunch held at RydeEastwood Leagues Club on Friday 9 December 2016; we had a great attendance and hope that everyone had a good time. A huge thank you to our Patrons, Allen Douglas and Dennis Petkovich, for their support throughout the year and we thank them for attending our Christmas party. Also thank you to Chef Sidney and his staff for the lovely food and service, which we all thoroughly enjoyed. The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Thursday 9 February 2017 at 7pm at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, so please come along and support us and nominate the new committee for the 2017 year. Our first trip for 2017 will be to Towradgi Bowling Club on Sunday 19 February, and then the next trip Sunday 23 April to Picton Bowling Club. Please come along and join in the fun. For further information please contact Robyn Newton on 9858 3014, Brenda Paterson on 8819 9650, Maria Armstrong on 9888 6359 or Milly Farrell on 9874 4667.
2016 seemed to come to a close quickly after a full calendar of events. Of course November had that great day of the racing calendar, the Melbourne Cup! We had a lovely lunch at Wing’s Restaurant, and enjoyed the excitement of the Race. Didn’t hear of any big winners but even a small win is great. Later in the month we held The pre-Christmas morning tea, a first but not the last. There was a very good role-up of members who enjoyed various types of scones with the addition of jam and cream, and a cup of tea to wash it down. Of course it lubricated the vocal chords for a good chat. Then onto the big month - The annual Xmas luncheon, held in the Club. Decorated tables, prizes, and a three-course meal to enjoy, not forgetting the glass of vino or soft drink. A great attendance, with members enjoying the afternoon festivities. New Year and planning is well underway. Just to start on the right note, a lunch in the Bistro is planned so that members may meet and review their holiday and family time. In February we have planned a day on the Nepean Belle lunch cruise, so make sure you are a passenger. Come along and make the New Year GREAT!

Babies & Preschool classes are held Monday to Friday from 11am1pm, and to cater for all our working mums and dads we also offer preschool classes on a Saturday morning from 8am until 12pm.
Our School Age Learn to Swim classes are by far the most popular, with classes held Monday to Friday from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, and on Saturday mornings from 8am until 12pm.
We also offer special needs classes for our swimmers that may require extra care and specialised teaching. Where possible we try and place these swimmers in classes where they will benefit from interaction with other swimmers. However limited, intensive one-on-one classes are available if required. To further assist all our families with children that require extra care all our special needs spots are rebated to ease any extra financial burden.
Our more serious swimmers move onto Dolphins, Marlins and then into our three levels of squads. The main focus in these levels is still correct technique, but speed, strength and racing skills are also developed. Not to forget all our adult swimmers out there who have yet to master the art of swimming, or who wish to do some fine tuning!
Adult classes are held during the day, midweek Thursdays and Fridays and also on Saturdays.
Our continual support and guidance offered to our families and our staff helps us to remain a Swim School with a personal and caring approach while keeping our focus on water education and safety for all.
Generally, The Fitness Edge Swim School operates within the public school term. We do hold lessons on pupil free days, but not on public holidays.
To encourage all our swimmers to show case their swimming skills The Fitness Edge has its own Swim Club. This is a parent-based club and offers our swimmers invaluable race experience in an environment in which they are comfortable. Home-based carnivals are generally held on the first Friday of each month, starting at 5.30pm.
Many of our members do not realise that they may be able to claim their Swim School fees through their private health insurance. Claims are dependent on your level of coverage and the fund you are covered by. Why not give your health fund a call and see if you are eligible? If you are, then please come and see us in the office and we will provide you with written receipts to take to your insurer to claim.

General Manager Chris McCarthy congratulating Janet-Ann Cary (Reception) 20yrs.
On Sunday 13 November 2016 fifty of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club family participated in the club’s inaugural internally organised fun run / walk. With the start line in Meadowbank, participants were able either to walk or run a 5km or 10km course, which took in some of the scenic river foreshore.
The morning was a resounding success with Club directors laying on a postrace BBQ in the shade of Memorial Park with refreshing cold drinks all around.
First past the post over 5kms was Angelo Emirian in an impressive 27 minutes 31 seconds. The 10km run was taken out by speedster and overall favourite Adam Angelini in 55 minutes 11 seconds (despite taking a wrong turn and almost ending up in the river)!
Event Organiser and Human Resources Manager, Jo Luke, said, “Due to the enthusiasm and success of the first Ryde-Eastwood Fun Run / Walk this year we definitely plan to go ahead with again it next year. We’re looking to make this a calendar day and grow the event each year.” And what better way to spend a healthy Sunday morning than exercising in the sunshine along such a picturesque course.

The Club’s appreciation dinner for sub-club executives held in November included the presentation of ‘achievement awards’ for some tireless sub-club executives.
Presentations were made to Rob Watson, secretary of the Chess Club, Maria Armstrong, secretary of the Travelling Bowlers Club (and previously a long-serving executive member of the Camera Club), and Yvonne Steel, President of the Travel Club. President Keith Aggett acknowledged the significant contribution of all recipients to their respective Clubs.
One fact omitted at the presentation was that this was the second ‘achievement award’ presented to Yvonne. This second award was in recognition of her continuing tireless work for the Travel Club, a feat also recognised by Travel Club members, who awarded her life membership of that Club earlier in 2016.
A further award was presented at the Camera Club annual dinner to Beverley Ambesi, who has been a member of the Camera Club since its inception in 1988 and who has served in many roles with the Club since the early 1990s particularly those related to competitions.
Congratulations are extended to all four recipients on their awards and for the excellent work they do for their respective Clubs.
