PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to the August edition of our journal. After spending some 31 days overseas on vacation, and as good as it was visiting New York, Miami, a two-week Caribbean cruise and then to New Orleans, it makes me realise how lucky we are to live in Australia.

When visiting your club you will notice the completion of improvements to the Foyer, Bistro, Coffee Club, TAB and Lounge areas, and by the time this journal goes to print, the commencement of the modernisation and ongoing improvements to our Fitness Edge and Crèche. Also on the drawing board for completion in the coming months is a refurbishment of the club’s gaming area, new carpet and chairs for the Golden Hawk Restaurant and the installation of dedicated memorabilia areas for both the Leagues Club and Football Club. In addition, we are about to commence refurbishment of the bathrooms at the club’s six units at Ocean Plaza, Coolangatta. Your Board is committed to ensuring that its members and guests are able to enjoy the best amenities.

In other exciting news, the City of Ryde Council has agreed to our purchase of the laneway surrounding our club. The process has been delayed by some recent legislative changes, but we hope to work through the detail in the coming months, including, of course, the price!

We are also making progress in the planning proposal with Ryde Council for the proposed Seniors Living development just north of the club. Approval of the planning proposal is a necessary process before the Board can further develop and lodge a Development Application.

As busy as we have been lately, early indications are that our financial result for the most recent financial year will be a healthy one, albeit a little down on last year. We have donated a record amount this year to such worthy causes as the Tathra Bushfire

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Appeal, Ryde Hospital for new equipment, The Adam Gardiner Fund, and Holy Cross Rhinos for new lighting, just to name a few. We also finalised the installation of a new generator ($700,000) for the safety and wellbeing of our members, in case of power failure.

In planning the future of your club, the Board, Senior Management and invited specialists will hold a strategic planning session in September. This involves being locked away for a weekend in a closed environment to consider not just the immediate future of our club, but also for the next decade and beyond. We do not have a crystal ball to predict our future, but we do know that moving forward, a heavy reliance on gaming is not sound business practice, so we need further diversification of our club’s assets to “future-proof” your club. This is when the long hours the Board has spent attending industry meetings, conferences and other industry events in the past will prove invaluable. This is combined with the information gained by Director Malcolm Chapple on the Clubs NSW Zone Committee and my own role as a Director of Leagues Clubs Australia.

I would like to also invite you, members of the Ryde-Eastwood family, for any input you would like to make. I invite ideas from you no matter how outrageous, as often ideas outside the box can lead to something great down the track. We will arrange a strategic planning ideas box at reception, so please feel free to propose anything you think may assist us. Please also feel free to let me know personally any ideas you may have when you see me in the club.

Again, I wish to thank you, the members of the Ryde-Eastwood family, for your participation at the club in its many and varied activities, which assists us in “Making Our Great Club Greater”. See you in the club.

The Annual General Meeting of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club will be held in the Willandra Room at the Club on Thursday 22nd November 2018 at 7.30pm. A further notice of the Annual General Meeting along with the Agenda and board nominees (if applicable) will be sent to all members by 31st October 2018.

LIGHTS

Community and Sporting News

Holy Cross Rhinos New Lighting

The new lights for Holy Cross Rhinos JRLFC training field were officially unveiled on Friday night, 15 June, a night which also saw a number of Balmain Junior Rugby league games played under lights for the first time.

All present agreed that the quality of the lighting was equal to if not better than any they had seen at a junior rugby league venue. Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club President, Jim McClymont, and a number of Board members were present for the unveiling and received a huge thank you from Holy Cross Rhinos President, Rhys Provan, and Vice-President, Brad Wilson, on behalf of the Holy Cross JRLFC executive, parents and players.

West Tigers players Luke Brooks, Esan Marsters and Thomas Mikaele also lent their support to the night by presenting after-game awards and generally encouraging the young players. Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club contributed $90,000 towards the cost of the new lighting.

Footnote: At the time of going to press the new lights at the Shamrocks Dundas JRLFC training grounds were being installed and we hope they will be up and running for the Shamrocks teams to enjoy the benefits in the few weeks before the season ends.

FOOTBALL REPORT

Dear Member

Welcome to the quarterly Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club report. We are well and truly into the season now and I really don’t know where the first six months of the year have gone. I am wondering if it’s just me getting older and not keeping up with how time flies, or is it beause we are having a great season?

On Sunday 1 July we had a reunion known as “Back to the Nest Day” held at TG Milner Field, our home ground. This was to coincide with our four teams playing, allowing our past players to see how the Club has continued to develop our new and younger players. What a fantastic day, we had great weather and along with a large number of ex-players from Ryde-Eastwood Football Club who took time out to come to the event, and this made for a terrific day. On the guest list we had players who played in the first RydeEastwood team in 1963. It was our pleasure to host Cec Ainsworth, our first Ryde-Eastwood captain, Ron White, Ron Egelton, Ron Murphy and Terry Hodges.

Also notably in attendance were Ken Wilson, who coached Ryde-Eastwood to the inaugural Metropolitan Cup Premiership, and Jim Tuite who was Ken Wilson’s trainer for that team. From other playing years, ex-players who were in attendance were Brad Wilson, our goalkicker and fullback, Kevin Denton, a pretty handy front or second-rower, Ben Phillips, a front rower, and the Angelini brothers, John, a second rower, and Brett, a winger. There were many other players in attendance who supported these players and together made a great team over our many years of football.

Once per month after the game, we hold a function where we present awards to our five teams, giving the Players’ Player and Best and Fairest awards to our deserving players. Last Sunday we were lucky to have our special guest past players to speak and make these presentations to our current players. It was really great to hear our past players telling stories to our current playing group, and the expressions on our younger players’ faces were that of excitement and admiration.

An event such as this takes a lot to organise and I would like to thank four people, without whose help the “Back to the Nest Day” would not have happened. A big THANK YOU to Michael Frain, Richard Kelly, Brad Wilson and Glen Hillier.

I would also like to thank John O’Brien from O’Brien Engineering for organising and producing two magnificant marquees, which you will see at every home game. These marquees have bright red tops with our club logo, the Big Hawk holding a football. This is a great advertisement for our football team, The Ryde-Eastwood Hawks. We invite you all to come along and support our great teams.

FOOTBALL ROUND UP:

LADY HAWKS WITH 11 COMPLETED ROUNDS

They started the season really well, winning their first game before having a bad run of injuries. Currently ranked 6th in their competition with still a chance of making the semi-final games. Game Statistics: Won 4, Lost 7. Points 19.

U20 DIVISION 1 WITH 11 COMPLETED ROUNDS

Going along pretty well, letting some games slip away with a draw (three to date). Currently in second position in their competition and will make the semi-final games. Game Statistics: Won 5, Draw 3, Lost 1, Byes 2. 28 Points.

U20 DIVISION 2 WITH 11 COMPLETED ROUNDS

Currently first in their competition and playing pretty good football and will be playing semi-finals football. Game Statistics: Won 8, Lost 2, Draw 1. 29 Points.

U18 DIVISION 1 WITH 11 COMPLETED ROUNDS

Some disappointing results from this team, who let let their chances slip through their fingers. Currently in 4th position. The games they lost should have been won, but in saying that the team should be able to make the semifinals provided they don’t let close games pass them by. Game Statistics: Won 5, Lost 5, Bye 1, Points 23.

U18 DIVISION 2 WITH 11 COMPLETED ROUNDS

A chance to play semi-finals football. They should have won games that they lost, but showing improvement as the season progresses. Currently in 5th postition. Game Statistics: Won 4, Lost 5, Bye 1. Points 22.

Our next after-game function will be held at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club on 12 August in the auditorium, commencing at 5.30pm.

All our after-game functions are a family affair and at Ryde-Eastwood we promote this as a family welcoming club. We encourage all our players to bring along their parents, partners, uncles, aunties, friends and supporters to enjoy the festitivites and acknowledge your playing successes. We would like for you all to become part of our Ryde-Eastwood Football Club family and also to encourage the growth of our Football Club.

We will see you at the game(s). All game times are digitally advertised throughout the Club. Until next time, “Watch this Space”. Up the Hawks!

INTERNAL CLUB NEWS

CAMERA CLUB

A new member drive earlier in the year helped the club find a group of new members, most of whom are extremely good photographers, and the rest are eager novices. Our decision to lower the number of workshops but have guest speakers who can give really good presentations and also help with cameras has also proved a winner. Over the past month several of our members have scored highly and won a number of competitions, and one was asked to be an official photographer for the State of Origin Rugby League match, which just shows the quality of the work that we do. We are always there for new members. If you’re looking for something to do and you like photography there’s no better time to join. Glynis Macri, Honorary Secretary Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Camera Club - 0405 624 294.

CHESS CLUB

The Club Championship Preliminary roundrobin tournament is nearly complete, with the following players progressing to the round robin finals tournament in October and November: Group A – Arthur Huynh and either Bill Gletsos (one game to play) or Rob Watson; Group B –Donato Mallari and Michael Anderson; Group C – Chris Ball and Michael Roh. THE FISHING CLUB

Our April outing started out a sunny day with light winds, but by late morning the winds had increased to over 15 knots, which made the fishing hard work. Michael caught the biggest bag at 4.9 kg, winning a bottle of RELC red wine; Sam was also an RELC wine winner with

the biggest fish of the day, a 1kg Gurnard. The may outing brought on some exciting fishing with Winston landing a monster 78cm 4.7 kg Snapper. Naturally Winston won both bottles of RELC red wine. Biggest fish and biggest bag at 7.8 kg on the day, 89 fish caught with a weight of 41.8kg, courtesy of 12 attendees. The fishing club organizes monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any interested club member should contact Sam Sundar on 0413 000 303 or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 8pm (except December). Fishing Club President. Trevor Fahey.

GOLF CLUB

The second round of the Stableford Trophy was held at Windsor with John Nilan winning and Peter Lau runner-up. TTT had an eagle on the Par 5 14th, Tony’s words – ‘on the green in two and sank the putt’. At Penrith, medals were awarded to Valery P. in A Grade and Siva S. in B Grade. Winter was finally on its way with a cool start to the round at Gordon hosting round 3 of the Stableford Trophy with Dave Whybro winning on countback from Colin Cope. The Ridge hosted this year’s pairs championships with Steve Mac and Colin Cope beating The Woodies. Cabramatta hosted the semi-final of the Matchplay - good luck to Rick and Peter Lau in the final. The day’s event was won by Sharon Norton with Warren Savy runner-up. SENIORS CLUB

It is with sadness that recently four of our long-time members have passed away – Don Durrant, Graham Parsonage, Jack Bennett and Ron Ferguson. All will be missed and our condolences go to their families and friends. The Seniors have a busy few months ahead regarding bus trips, lunches, walks and of course our card game Solo Whist, which is

held every week on a Thursday; for more information, please contact Pam on 8065 2391. Over the past few months we have been to St Patrick’s Day lunch at Berowra Waters, Canoelands Orchard, the Nan Tien Temple, Mother’s Day Lunch, Doyles at Watsons Bay and more recently the Guide Dog Centre at Glossodia. Our walks are proving very popular. In the coming months we are hoping to travel to Historic Linnwood House, the Alpacas and the Nursing Museum. We welcome all our new members and hope you enjoy the facilities and meeting new friends. Also, a big thank you to our faithful “old” members for all your support and suggestions. We have two meetings a month, on the first and third Thursday at 11am in the function rooms at the Club. Our annual fee is $5; for more information please contact Marie Weston on 9638 7419.

TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB

Our last trip was to Umina Bowling Club on Sunday 17 June and we had a great day inside the Club. On the greens it was cold and we had a very, very windy experience, with all our bowls going everywhere except where we aimed them as we had no control over them, and they were riding on the wind like a kite would; however we still had fun. Our next outing is to Davistown RSL club on Sunday 5 August, our second trip to this club and I am sure we will be welcomed like we were last year. Dress code is Bowls uniform. The bus leaves at 9.30am from Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. Then on Sunday 23 September we are off to Woonona Bowling club for another fun day of Bowls. Dress code is Mufti. Hoping everyone has recovered from any winter ailments that they might have suffered through. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun, and as the saying goes “The more the merrier”. For further information please contact Robyn Newton on 9858 3014, Pat Stewart on 9743 3032 or Milly Farrell on 9874 4667.

TRAVEL CLUB

Since the last journal the Travel Club has had various outings. Our last one was “A Day in The Country”, which was very well-attended. In May, we held a “Mother’s Day Luncheon” in the Golden Hawk Restaurant at the Club, where we celebrated that Wonderful Woman of our early years. It was a mouth-watering menu which made one forget the current diet. In June there was a trip out to the Recycling Plant, “Kimbriki”, where we saw the steps taken to reduce landfill. It was a very interesting and informative trip although a bit wet and cold but we ruggedup for the day. Our next and very popular scheduled trip is “Christmas at The Chapel on The Hill”. We are looking forward to a splendid Luncheon with Father Christmas and songs of the season. After that, another outing will take us to TAFE at North Ryde where the Chefs and Service Trainees will show their skills with a very tastefully presented luncheon. Come and join our group and you can enjoy these entertaining events. We meet in the Ryedale Room on the first Tuesday in the month. Or contact Jill Kemp on 9869 7970 or Yvonne Steel on 9878 1164.

ADAM GARDINER FUND SPORTSMEN CHARITY LUNCHEON Community Nerws

Thank you to all those who attended the charity luncheon for the Adam Gardiner Fund, held at the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Heritage Function centre on Friday 8 June. It was packed to capacity as everybody enjoyed a wonderful lunch. We are proud to announce that the net proceeds for the day (over $14,000), will be donated to the Institute for Immunology and Research at Westmead Hospital to support the Amyloidosis Clinic. In addition to this, RydeEastwood Leagues Club donated a further $20,000 as part of our 5-year commitment to the Westmead Clinic and the AGF. Congratulations to Trisha Gardiner-Wilson, Steve Wilson and team for their hard work in coordinating the day. To see more photos of the day, go to: www.agf.org.au/blog

ADAM GARDINER AMYLOIDOSIS CLINIC AT WESTMEAD HOSPITAL INVITED TO JOIN THREE NEW CLINICAL TRIALS

A PRESS RELEASE FROM PROFESSOR GRAEME STEWART AM, DIRECTOR, CLINICAL IMMUNOLOGY, WESTMEAD HOSPITAL

Clinical trials are an important means of getting early access for patients to better treatments. Participants in a clinical trial are assured of ongoing treatment after the trial has finished, often 2 years before governments agree to pay for proven new therapies. Funding through the Adam Gardiner Fund INC. has enabled the team at Westmead to establish capacity to take on the resource-intensive role of a clinical trials centre.

In the past month, 3 pharmaceutical companies have invited the Westmead centre to be a trial site for exciting new therapies. This includes the anti-SAP treatment pioneered by the UK National Amyloidosis Centre, and until now tested only in London, Boston and at the Mayo Clinic. Each of the treatments in these trials carry a high level of confidence of being valuable improvements in

care, with the anti-SAP treatment being perhaps the most exciting due to its ability to stimulate cells of the immune system to chew up all forms of amyloid, potentially removing it from the organs the amyloid deposits are damaging.

Such invitations depend upon the reputation as a centre of expertise with the comprehensive range of resources needed to carry out very complicated trials. The reputation of the Adam Gardiner Westmead Amyloidosis Centre has been developed over the past 11 years as Australia’s first comprehensive, multi-disciplinary clinic providing world’s best care to people and families living with Amyloidosis. Clinical trials in this complex group of serious diseases require the knowledge and experience of medical specialists in several fields working in

a co-ordinated way as has been established at Westmead over more than a decade. It also requires senior nurses with expertise in the running of complex trials.

Advances in Amyloidosis research are now paying off with new treatments being trialled at a rate well above that for many diseases. In partnership with the Adam Gardiner Fund Inc., the Westmead Amyloidosis Clinic is determined to ensure that Australian patients have equal opportunity of access to these advances in medical science at the earliest possible time.

From The Board of The Adam Gardiner Fund Inc. we thank you all.

The Fitness Edge Swim School offers a safe, friendly and encouraging environment for people of all ages and abilities. Our youngest students are six months of age and our most senior member is in their 70s. It’s never too late to learn the life skill of swimming.

All staff at The Fitness Edge are Austswim Qualified and all hold current CPR certification.

Babies & Pre-School Classes

These classes are held from Monday to Friday between 11am and 1pm. There are limited pre-school positions on Saturdays.

All Instructors on these classes are qualified in Austswim Infant & Pre-school Aquatics. Pre-schoolers’ safest option is to attend classes consistently. Our indoor facility makes this a great place to learn to swim, a skill for life, all year round.

School-Age Learn to Swim Classes

The classes cater for all school ages and abilities. The focus for younger children is on safety and gaining confidence; from there we develop all swimming strokes. Our consistent swimmers move on to Dolphins, Marlin and Squads.

While the main focus in these levels is still correct technique, we also develop speed and racing skills.

Places in these classes are very limited and are subject to an assessment of new swimmers’ ability and available classes.

Adult classes

These classes are held on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning.

Beginner classes are for members who are not confident to Swim with their faces in the water, or just want some tips to improve their skills.

Classes are run in school terms only.

For further details, please call the Swim School office on 9808 7617 or check out our website at www.thefitnessedge.com.au

Our office hours during term time are: Monday – Friday: 10am – 6pm Saturday: 8am – 1.15pm

“Learning to swim has many benefits for our children. It’s great for their health and well being, it enhances their selfesteem and importantly teaches them a respect for water. While children are capable of being independently mobile in the water from a very young age, they must never be left unsupervised. No child is drown proof”.
