Dear Member,
The club’s 2020 AGM is now behind us and I trust that everyone in the Ryde-Eastwood family had a safe and joyous Christmas and New Year’s. In 2020, we lost our longest serving Director, John (Jack) King, a rugby league and club legend, who will very much be missed by us all. In November, in accordance with our Leagues Club constitution, the club held biennial elections for the Leagues Club Board of Directors. Our floor Directors, Paul Moujalli and Dennis Petkovich, were both voted for a further term on the Board to represent the members.
Continuing both the club’s and the Board’s stability, which has been solidified through its 50-year history from the founding parties that started the club, the director position to replace John King is from the Football Committee. This ensures the ongoing support and involvement in community sport into the future. Following the latest Football Club election, I am pleased to announce the election on to the Leagues Club Board of Football Club life member, Steve Broughton. As son-in-law of past Director Warwick Porter, Steve joins us with extensive knowledge of our club. Steve is also a qualified civil engineer and has run his own successful concrete delivery business for the last 35 years. Steve also has an extensive rugby league career, not only playing for Ryde-Eastwood, but also with eighty-one first grade games for Western Suburbs, where he was captain, before finishing his career at Parramatta.
We welcome aboard Steve and congratulate all Board members on their reelection. We look forward to your contribution to the future of our club and I believe that our club has the Board, management and staff to lead us there.
While we survived 2020 reasonably well for our industry, the Board and management now have “their sleeves firmly rolled up” to try and make 2021 a successful year for both our members and the community. If there is one positive that we can take from Covid-19, it is how the Board and management have responded to the challenges we have faced by adopting a fresh view of our club and its ongoing operation. This will include, but is not limited to, introducing positive steps not only to arrest the difficulties the pandemic has caused, but also to evaluate long-term solutions and opportunities to benefit our future. At the same time, we shall continue to work on our Seniors Living development, the finalisation of the laneway surrounding our premises, the completion of the Club Thirroul amalgamation, the purchase of further properties adjacent to our club (if they come available), the draft proposal of our future club extensions, as well as continued strategic planning for the club’s future in accordance with the club’s vision.
I would like finish with a thank you to all in the Ryde-Eastwood family, considering the unprecedented difficulties of the past year. Our club would not have survived as well without the Board for leading the way, the management team for its planning and driving those plans, and our staff for the way they assist and care for our members, particularly with the shutdown and restart of club operations. And to our members, who demonstrated their unwavering loyalty when we most needed it, I thank you one and all. Now we are in 2021, please keep safe and well and remember that your club will always give that extra effort to make sure its members and guests are welcomed into a safe and healthy environment. See you in the Club.
James (Jim) McClymont President
S. Broughton
Dear Member,
Welcome to the first edition of our Football report for Season 2021. I trust that all members have had an enjoyable Christmas and a safe start to the New Year, and let’s all hope Covid does not encroach on our 2021 season.
NEW LOOK PLAYERS’ APPAREL FOR 2021
Changes have been made to our players’ playing strip for the Ron Massey and Sydney Shield sides. Colours will still be Red and White with a change to the print design. We hope all players and members will find our new look pleasing. The remaining teams will continue to play in our current playing strip.
To date, due to the late commencement of our Junior League for the 2021 season (early May), not all teams have been appointed Coaches. However, coaches have been appointed for the following teams:
RON MASSEY COACH - Jarred Farlow, an experienced coach, having played for Wests Tigers NRL 1st Grade.
SYDNEY SHIELD COACH - Dane Morgan, ex-player for Melbourne Storm, NRL 1st Grade.
A GRADE / 23’S COACH – Glenn Starr.
OPEN AGE WOMEN’S COACH – Anthony Gagliardi.
We wish all appointed coaches, and those yet to be appointed, a successful 2021 season.
UPDATE ON TRAINING GROUNDS FOR 2021
Pre-season training commenced in November 2020, with most teams attending the Holy Cross College grounds for pre-season training up until Christmas. Many new faces and current players attended these sessions. Currently in 2021, our training is held at three grounds. Our home ground games will continue to be played at TG Milner Oval at Eastwood. As usual, when game details become available, we will inform you via our in-house advertising screens throughout the club and also the club’s social media platforms.
In closing, I would like to thank our new sponsors, our current sponsors and you, our loyal supporters, for your continued support of the Ryde-Eastwood Hawks.
Until next time, watch this space.

In October 2020, we lost one of the alltime Ryde-Eastwood and rugby league greats, John (Jack) King OAM. Jack had been a director at the club since 1964, representing a 56year veteran tenure of loyal service to the club he loved.
Jack held the Vice Presidency of the Leagues Club from 2017-2018. Jack was also a life member of six other clubs, as well as Ryde-Eastwood, including Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club.
In 2019, Jack received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his outstanding contribution to rugby league.
A regular at the club, and loved by staff and members
alike, Jack always had a story to tell, and as an avid collector of Ryde-Eastwood history, he was a key contributor to the club’s memorabilia wall.
The Ryde-Eastwood family pays its utmost respect to the great man, a true Ryde-Eastwood champion who will be sadly missed by all involved, not only at the club but also by the wider local and rugby league communities.
We hope that 2021 will return the club back to normality. Meanwhile we continue to work diligently to provide a safe and comfortable environment for all members and guests. Please check our webpage for all up to date ‘restrictions’ at the club to ensure you plan a safe and enjoyable visit. Our Clean Team specialists are trained to ensure that they maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene for the safety and wellbeing of all our members, visitors and staff. They’re working around the clock to ensure that everyone enjoys a safe, clean and welcoming environment.
Our COVID Marshals are focused on making sure that our members always maintain safe social distancing. They regularly check patron numbers in each club area to ensure members can enjoy their visit well within safety and compliance limits, which acts as another level of safety and security for everyone in the club. Say Hi! to our Clean Team and Marshals when you see them around the club!

2020 was a very unexpected year for everyone in the world, including Premier League netball in NSW. Last year, with the ERNA Hawks Opens as reigning Champions and the U23s 2019 semi-finalists, the club started the season full of enthusiasm and looking forward to another great season. Pre-season started at the end of January, but by 16th March everything STOPPED. After Covid restrictions gradually eased, the girls worked in full training towards the delayed season restart on Wednesday 22nd July. First game back, the smiles on their faces were huge!
U23s, who filled in during the season.
This squad got us through to our third consecutive Grand Final, the only franchise to have achieved this, which shows the depth of talent within the ERNA Hawks’ environment. Club Captain, Emily Bills, said, “This year was not our year to win, but everyone was thrilled to have had the opportunity to get on court and play, plus remain healthy. And most importantly, we all had FUN!”
We congratulate all our players who represented at higher levels in 2020. Teams included the Australian Diamonds squad; GIANTS or Swifts teams, U19 or U17 State teams or the QBE Swift and GIANTS Academies - Kiera Austin, Sophie Craig, Claire O’Brien, Nicole Styles, Olivia Coleman, Alisha Cairns, Alison Miller, Amelia Kirgan and Papi Alaalatoa, both in the U17 State Team. We wish Sophie Dwyer all the best in the Australian U21 squad for the Australian Youth World Cup in 2021.
The ERNA Hawks Opens welcomed Sandy Attard, who stepped up to the Head Coach role, and Debbie Deans Smith as our new Assistant Coach. We had quite a “new” look team, with five of last year’s team away in the Suncorp Super Netball bubble in Queensland with the GIANTS and Swifts teams - Kiera Austin, Sophie Halpin, Sophie Dwyer, Nicole Styles, and Claire O’Brien. Plus there were two retirements and one player moving to a new Franchise much closer to home. To help us through this difficult year, we welcomed back Emily Keenan and Jay Rikard-Bell after two years of “retirement”, and new to Hawks, but a very experienced player, Brooke Lawrence. We had a core nine players who worked hard every week both on court and at training. At the end of the GIANTS’ season we welcomed back Sophie Dwyer who made herself eligible for the finals. Thank you to Emily Austin from our Metro 1 team and to Levana Wayne-Boyle from our
Our Opens Team in 2020 was: Emily Bills (Capt.), Alisha Cairns, Alison Miller, Sophie Dwyer, Olivia Coleman, Emily Keenan, Georgia Marshall (Vice Capt.) Brooke Lawrence, Jay Rikard-Bell, Ebony Burnard, Sandy Attard (Head Coach), Deb Deans Smith (Assist. Coach), Di Bills (Manager), Ben Go (Macquarie Sports Physio) and Photographer Pete Kenny, Framing Life@Boronia Park.
Our U23s team also had a very new look team and the players and coaches have worked extremely hard to get the team to “gel” as one unit. We welcomed Georgie Arrow as the new Assistant Coach to help Jennie Webster as Head Coach and Debra Hanson as Manager. The U23s had several injuries during the season. We say a HUGE thank you to all those involved for your contribution in getting a team on court each week.
Our U23 Team in 2020 was: Catherine Tevaga (Capt.), Chloe Hatvany, Ana Lupe Kailahi, Anastasia Afoa (Vice Capt.), Malava Palamo, Macy Peni, Amelia Kirgan, Taylah Harkins, Laura Cook (Vice Capt.), Papi Alaalatoa, Levana Wayne-Boyle, Ella Woodhill, Jennie Webster (Head Coach), Georgie Arrow (Assist Coach) Debra Hanson (Manager), Ben Go (Physio).

Eighteen months ago, Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club opened discussions with Club Thirroul, which is located about one hour south of Sydney. The club is affectionately known as the ‘Jewel of Thirroul’. The club offers an amazing outlook looking over the Bowling greens and picturesque views of the escarpment. Club Thirroul has been part of the fabric of the Northern Illawarra since 1933. The club’s friendly atmosphere, convenient location and range of amenities make it Illawarra’s destination of the north. When Ryde-Eastwood forwarded an expression of interest to amalgamate with Club Thirroul, it beat off some tough competition to become the preferred amalgamation partner. In November 2020, after much hard work and negotiation from both clubs, we were delighted when both clubs’ members voted overwhelmingly in favour of the amalgamation at Extraordinary General Meetings held at West Ryde and Thirroul. Moving into 2021, there is still much planning and hard work ahead to ensure the future success of both clubs, but it is an exciting challenge and one we are all relishing.
A very warm welcome to Club Thirroul!

After the highly unusual and very challenging year the club faced in 2020, we were determined to support our members, staff, and local community through thick and thin. And when we learned that the Local Business Awards planned to proceed, despite the difficulties and uncertainty facing many industries, your club jumped at the chance to participate in the awards in two categories, entering both Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and the Fitness Edge Health and Aquatic Centre.
In September we were very excited to learn that both the main club and the Fitness Edge had both won through as finalists in the Local Business Awards – Northern Districts.
The awards ceremony was hosted by Epping Club on 9 November. Club CEO, Carl Pozzato, Club President, Jim McClymont, and Fitness Edge Centre Manager, Chris Kalligas (pictured below from left to right), attended the event, and keenly awaited the results.
We were very proud to announce very soon afterwards that the club had won the category of ‘outstanding hospitality venue’. However, the Fitness Edge was up against some very tough local competition and just missed out. Carl said, “It’s a good feeling to end the year on a high after all the upheaval everyone has faced since March.”
Both Jim and Carl were unanimous in their praise of staff, members, and the local community. “We would like to thank everyone who voted for us to get us to the final stages of the competition and helped us to win this prestigious award. Thank you all in the Ryde-Eastwood family.”
Below, Councillor Craig Chung, City of Sydney, sent his congratulations to the club.
After a very difficult year battling the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the club recently celebrated its 50th Birthday celebrations. After the tough year for all, club staff enjoyed their Christmas Party masquerade ball in December where gifts and badges were presented to staff who have reached employment milestones in the last year. Chief Executive Officer, Carl Pozzato, noted that, “After a difficult 2020 for everyone involved with the Ryde-Eastwood family, this has been a great opportunity to thank all our staff, both new and long-serving, for their ongoing service and loyalty.”

Front Row from left to right: Suet Yin Chan (Accounts) 15 years, Penny Wilson (Admin/Accounts) 5 years, Alex Hutcheson (Learn to Swim Instructor) 5 years, Anna Jazowy (Floor Manager) 20 years, Mary-Lou McNamara (Swim School) 15 years.
Last year the Ryde-Eastwood family raised $4,000 at its World’s Greatest Shave event, which contributed in the fight against blood cancer. In 2021, we are proud to announce that we will be doing it again and aiming to raise even more money for The Leukaemia Foundation
So, come along and shave or colour your hair this March and help Aussie families beat blood cancer. Or please kindly make a donation at one of the donation boxes around the club.
Shave or colour your hair at the club on Wednesday 10 March from 6.30pm.
If you would like to donate directly and support somebody in the Ryde-Eastwood family going for the shave or colouring, please go to https://bit.ly/3oehxDU and follow the prompts.

We encourage all entrants to dress up as ‘pink as possible’, and the member wearing the ‘Pinkest’ outfit will win a $50 prize hamper. To be part of the Pink Bingo fun we encourage all participants to make a gold coin donation to help in the Foundation’s fight against breast cancer.
During Pink Week, The Coffee Club will donate $1 for every purchase of Fish and Chips or Lemon Pepper Calamari. And the Palm Court Bistro will donate $1 for every Pink Lamington purchase served with a scoop of Gelato.
In Pink Week, the Club will also donate $1 for every membership sold and 10% of all raffle ticket sales. The Club’s Board will match all donations.
Do you have a spare few hours a day or week? Can you help this wonderful Community Charity?
Ryde-Eastwood is very excited to partner The Sir Roden & Lady Cutler Foundation, which helps the elderly and physically handicapped with free transport to and from their medical appointments. The club will operate the Patient Transport Service, a FREE SERVICE for people who require transport to or from a health facility such as a hospital or rehabilitation unit, but do not need a time-critical emergency ambulance.
You may have seen our brand-new patient transport vehicle on level three of the club’s carpark (photo below).
We are currently looking for Volunteer Drivers to help us ensure that we can provide this unique and wonderful FREE service to
those people in need in the Ryde-Eastwood community.
So, if you enjoy driving and like making a difference, please contact Vincent Del Zio on 8765 8661 or Anita Fong on 0419 731 596 if you wish to help or obtain further information.
And Vincent Del Zio will be holding an information session in the club on Tuesday 16 February from 10.30am.

We are a family-friendly swim school offering a broad range of lessons from six months of age up to adults, as well as catering for swimmers with special needs.
Babies and Preschool classes are held Monday to Friday from 11am-12.30pm, and to cater for all our working mums and dads we also offer preschool classes from three years of age on a Saturday morning from 8am until 12pm.
Our School Age Learn to Swim classes are by far the most popular with classes held Monday to Friday from 3.30pm5.30pm, and on Saturday mornings from 8am until 12pm.
We also offer special needs classes for our swimmers that may require extra care and specialised teaching. Where possible, we try and place our special
swimmers in classes where they will benefit from interaction with other swimmers. However, limited intensive one-on-one classes are available, if required. To further assist all our families with children that require extra care, all our special needs’ spots are rebated to ease any extra financial burden.
Our more serious swimmers move on to Dolphins, Marlins and then into our two levels of squads. While the main focus in these levels is still correct technique, we also develop speed, strength and racing skills.
And, of course, not forgetting all our adult swimmers out there who have yet to master the art of swimming, or who wish to do some fine-tuning! Adult classes are held during the day, midweek Thursday and Fridays, and also on Saturdays.
The continual support and guidance we offer our families and staff helps us remain a Swim School with a personal and caring approach while keeping our focus on water education and safety for all.
Generally, the Fitness Edge Swim School operates within the Public-School term. We do hold lessons on Pupil Free days, but not on Public Holidays.
We look forward to being part of your family’s aquatic education.
For further details, please call the Swim School office on 9808 7617, email: swimschoolinfo@releagues.com or check out our website. Our office hours during term time are: Monday –Friday: 10am – 6pm and Saturday: 8am – 1.15pm.
