PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Dear Member
It is time again for my final President’s report of 2018. Our financial result has been most pleasing and more detailed information is provided in the CEO’s report and my annual report further in the journal.
If you visit the Club in the coming weeks you will notice that we are nearing the completion of our current refurbishment programme, with the gaming lounge recently completed and the new memorabilia display areas for both the Leagues Club and the Football Club situated just past the foyer area almost complete. Our goal with this programme has been to ensure that your Club provides a modern décor and remains fresh and inviting while the Club develops a more comprehensive plan for redevelopment.
The long-awaited purchase of the laneway behind the Club is nearing the final stages and the future development plans for the Club and adjacent properties, including the lane, will be reviewed with renewed vigour once this sale is complete. As advised in previous journals, the Club also has a planning proposal in progress with Ryde Council for a Seniors Living project on adjacent land in Ryedale and Terry Roads. Subject to the outcome with Council, that project will also keep your Board and senior management busy in planning the best long term outcome for the Club.
The success of your Club would not be possible without you, the member, actively participating in the many activities your Club has to offer. Thank you to all the indoor Club executive and members for their continued support and congratulations to all the sporting teams the Club is associated with for another successful year in sport. To the team at ERNA, a special congratulations for the Hawks Premier League team reaching the grand final, and to Ryde-Eastwood Football Club, who under the guidance of President Malcolm Chapple also had a very successful season and look like going on to bigger and better things. Thank you all for making Ryde-Eastwood the enjoyable place it is.
I would like special thanks go to our CEO, Chris McCarthy, who is retiring in January 2019. This man will always have a special place in our Ryde-Eastwood heart. In the last 25 years he has overseen the transformation of our little Club to the spectacular premises you visit today. Within my personal life I have worked with many managers but Chris is one of the most hardworking, conscientious, straight shooting people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He and his wife Linda enter his retirement with all our best wishes for a long, happy and healthy retirement, and he will be sorely missed.
The Board has had a succession plan in place and congratulates Carl Pozzato, our current Assistant GM, on his appointment to take over the CEO’s role when Chris departs. Carl has been part of our succession planning for some time now and we wish him good luck and assure him the Board will assist him in every way to try and fill the big shoes he has been left.

As we wrap up another year, the Camera Club is looking very healthy. An influx of new blood during the year means competition is now intense as we all vie for an award to show how good we are. We have several people wanting to join next year already; they will be attending the rest of the meetings this year as guests. CHESS CLUB
The Interclub Grade Matches finished in July, with Ryde-Eastwood teams winning the U2100 and U1700 divisions. The U1500 team came second in their division. Individual board prizes (for scoring over 70%) were won by Arthur Huynh, Nicholas Kordahi, Shane Dibley, David Zanon, Ralph Shaw and Karoly Gerecs. The Club Blitz championship was held in mid-August and was won by Donato Mallari with Arthur Huynh second, and Jason Pan third. The September Bobby Fischer Cup “rapid” event was won by Arthur Huynh, with Donato Mallari second and Mohan Pagadala and Suranga Seneviratne equal third. Vince Chiara won the U1600 section. The annual Ryde-Eastwood Open was hosted at the club over the October long weekend, and attracted 70 players. The club championship finals and the club’s “Classic” tournament started on 17 October. EUCHRE CLUB
The Euchre Club extends an invitation and warm welcome to any Euchre players to come and join us on Wednesday nights in the Willandra Room at 7.20pm. In July we held a mid-year dinner in The Golden Hawk Restaurant which was enjoyed by our players, their partners and our patron, Paul Moujalli and his wife. THE FISHING CLUB
Our August 2018 outing was a day of catching snapper as we fished wide off North Head at the 50 fathom depth. Michael Cheng started the race with a 2kg specimen. Sam Velenti followed up with two fish over 1kg in quick succession. 23 snapper were on board at the end of the day with all the attendees having caught at least one snapper. Michael Cheng won both bottles of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Wine with the biggest fish, a 2kg snapper, and heaviest bag of 5.9kgs. 27kgs of fish were caught on the day. The September outing on Sunday the 2nd was cancelled due to bad weather so a catch up trip was organized for the 12th September. Ten members and one visitor were on board. Flathead was the fish of the day as we fished the inner pine reef with morwong and snapper as the main catch. A second drift was over a sandy bottom, flathead territory. Sam Sundar caught a double-headed followed by a triple-headed flathead catch. Sam
Sundar got the R.E.L.C. wine with the biggest fish, a 1.1 kg morwong, and Gary Lamb the R.E.L.C. wine with the heaviest bag weighing 4.5 kgs. 75 fish were caught with a total weight of 29.5 kgs. The fishing club organises monthly deep-sea charter boasts fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. GOLF CLUB
With the temperature at 0 degrees, 17 brave souls headed out on the course at Penrith. The winner on the day was Dave Whybro with Slava S. runnerup. This was also the venue for the Matchplay final with Rick Beves beating Peter Lau 4/3. Lynwood was another cold morning hosting the Medal of Medals play-off with John Nilan champion for 2018 and also taking out the day’s event, with Warren Savy runner-up. Fox Hills hosted our first round of the Club Championships with Sharon Norton taking honours and John Nilan runner-up. The Eagles Nest was won by Brian Ewin (19 balls); this will top up his last win of 81 balls – if anyone needs a golf ball Brian should be the one to help you out. Dunheved was the second round of Club Championships with Warren Savy taking the honours and a three way count back for runner-up going to Fernando Martins. The final round of our Championships was at Richmond with Brian Ewin the winner of the day’s event and Fernando (can you hear the Drums) runner-up. Congratulations to our Club Champion for 2018, Robert Wood and Warren Savy Runnerup. Our A Grade winner was Robert and runner-up Warren (yes a bit of a two-horse race this year); the B grade winner was Sharon Norton and Fernando Martins runner-up. INDOOR BOWLS
As 2018 draws to a close we can report another enjoyable year of good bowling and social fun. Our bowling sessions and social events have been consistently well attended. Those members who travelled to Caloundra in August enjoyed the opportunity to compete in the Australian Championships, with most hopeful of repeating the experience in Mount Gambier in 2019. Our thanks to the Board of Directors and our Patron, Mr Jack King, for their continued support throughout the year. We look forward to our members who are unwell being able to join us at our Christmas dinner or lunch and wish them a speedy recovery. Our thanks to Sidney and his staff for their excellent catering. SENIORS CLUB
Firstly a big thank you to all our members who supported the ‘Buy A Bale Campaign’ for the farmers. On just one day we were able to send them a cheque for $300. Your Committee is very proud of all those who donated. We have been to see the Alpacas – what a delightful animal they are. We have more bus outings over the coming three
months including a cruise and of course our annual Christmas Lunch in December, held in the function rooms of the Club. Our stoic walkers are out and about until December with a break in January but are then off again in February. We welcome all our new members and thank all our faithful ‘old’ ones who have kept the Seniors running since its inception. One of our very dear members, Jerry Lee, passed away on 4th August aged 98. Our condolences to Lorraine and all the family. We meet on the first and third Thursday of every month at 11am in the function rooms of the Club with the exception of Cards, which is played weekly. TRAVEL CLUB
Where does the Year go? Well one spot was “The Chapel”, a great restaurant in the Blue Mountains. This was the venue for “Christmas in July” which was very well attended. After a lovely drive to the restaurant we enjoyed the Christmas fare and entertainment, and of course we were relaxed and full for the drive back to the Club. In August we were off to see the “Museum of Fire”, a collection of firefighting equipment and memorabilia. We finished off a very interesting day with lunch at Penrith RSL. September was our trip out to some spots we have not been to for some time: The Sydney harbour lights. Morning tea at ‘Blues Point’, then onto ‘Dobroyd Point’, Manly and Queenscliff, with lunch at Dee Why RSL. Then a cruising drive back to the Club. Another Great Day Out! In October we have another outing which should be different, a “Mystery and Eccentricity” tour. This Trip will liven up your nerves and give you a chance to guess the next stop! Then, “The Big Day - Melbourne Cup Lunch”. Bring your money and guesses to which Horse will win ‘The Race’; it’s always a good day. TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB
Our latest trip for the Travelling Bowlers was in September when we went to Woonona Bowling Club. While we had a mix up with the time we were due to arrive, we ended up enjoying our day and had an early finish. Our next trip is on Sunday 11 November 2018 to Dapto where we always have a great day and thoroughly enjoy ourselves, and look forward to the visit. We will be having our Christmas lunch on Friday 23 November upstairs in the Golden Hawk Restaurant starting from 12 pm. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2018
Dear Members,
The AGM of our Club is drawing near and thanks to you and the rest of the Ryde-Eastwood family we are again most pleased to report a healthy profit. We have not reached the heights of last year’s record profit but with the uncertainties of our political and commercial world affecting us all we are most happy with our underlying profit of $4,850,651. More detail of our finances is in the CEO’s report and also in the annual report, which members can access via the Club’s website.
The success of this year has enabled us to do something of which we are very proud. That is to invest in our wonderful community, and I would like to say to all of the recipients of our donations, the “thank yous” received are right back at you for allowing us to be part of your wonderful organisations.
Part of the Club’s grants programme includes the Club Grants donations, which have a mandatory component; however, Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club donations this year total over $760,000, which is double that mandatory amount. This figure doesn’t include the contribution by our own Football Club, which has invested heavily this year in developing a ‘pathways programme’ for Rugby League for young adults and also this year a women’s team for the first time.
Your continued support as members of the Ryde-Eastwood family by frequenting your club enables us to provide this level of support. The many organisations that your Club has supported with your assistance over the past twelve months are listed at the end of this insert regarding the annual meeting. Of special note this year (in addition to our major donation to the Adam Gardiner Fund) is a $50,000 donation to
GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT
Dear Members,
This last year has again been a very successful and eventful year for your Club. From a financial point of view, a profit of $4,850,651 after tax, while slightly down on last year’s trading figures (excluding the profit on sale of the Hawks’ site), is a strong result and a reward for effort from our team in sometimes difficult circumstances. Full details are contained in the annual report, which is available online.
The year started off with the final touches to the refurbishment of the Club entry and foyer, and I’m sure members are pleased with the end result, as are we. During September 2017 through to November we refurbished the main lounge area and main bar, including new carpet and furniture. These projects completed the process of refurbishing the whole of the ground floor, except for the gaming lounge (more on that later).
Planning then commenced for the installation of a generator to service the Club in the event of a power failure. This project was completed in late February. The $750,000 spend on this project was to give members peace of mind that the Club could continue to function in the event of a supply failure. No need for members and guests to stream out of the Club if the power failed and no more need for me or other staff to sit on the front steps until the early hours of the morning waiting for the power to be restored!
Planning then commenced on other projects for 2018. New carpet and chairs for the Golden Hawk Restaurant, which was completed in August; a redesign of the cardio room in the Fitness Edge, including installation of a new functional training area (recently completed); refurbishment of the gaming room and provision of new memorabilia areas. Work also commenced on refurbishing all of the bathrooms in our six units at Ocean Plaza, Coolangatta, to bring them up to a modern contemporary standard. This work commenced in late July 2018 with four units now completed and the final two to be completed by early November.
The refurbishment of the gaming room commenced in mid-September after a long period of planning and design, and will be completed by the time members receive this report. This project was a major logistical effort which included the removal of existing machines and bases with associated cabling and power, installation (and later dismantling) of a temporary gaming area, the provision of new carpet, new bases and a redesign of the gaming machine layout, as well as some ancillary interior design work. I am very proud of how this was accomplished by the team in a manner to minimise the disruption to members. That effort was led by the Club’s Assistant General Manager, Carl Pozzato, who was heavily involved in the planning and design of this new area, assisted by Gaming Manager, Nathan Hawton. From our end, we are extremely pleased with the end result and we hope members who utilise this area also find the end result satisfactory.
The final project is the construction of memorabilia areas for the Leagues Club and the Football Club, to try and bring to life for future generations the early history of both these Clubs. These areas are being built on and beside the stairwell leading up to the auditorium and we are aiming to unveil them on the 15th November in conjunction with the annual Foundation Member’s Dinner. This particular aspect has also been in planning for over 12 months and has involved a lot of research work trying to identify the key pieces of history that will give all members, old and new, an overview of how these Clubs
the Tathra Bushfire Appeal, and a pledged donation of $50,000 to the Drought Relief Appeal to assist our farmers.
Your Club’s Board and senior management recently underwent a strategic planning conference to prepare a path for the long term future of the club. While the Club is currently in a healthy financial position the Board acknowledges its responsibility to prepare the Club for future generations of members, and it will require considerable ongoing planning and effort to ensure the Club maximises its position in the future. I would also like to thank those who put forward ideas and thoughts for our strategic planning weekend and to let you know that all submissions were tabled and have been or will be studied by our management team.
My personal thanks to my fellow Board members for their assistance in what has been another busy year, and for their continued effort on your behalf. The full Board has been re-elected unopposed for a further two-year term and we acknowledge your faith in our stewardship of your Club. Thanks also go to our Management team for their loyal and committed efforts and to our courteous and conscientious staff for their efforts over the past year, in particular with the many disruptions caused by the refurbishment programme.
In closing, thanks to our members for also supporting the Club during the refurbishment programme and accepting the often compromised facilities, and for your continued support overall. We are all looking forward to another exciting year. See you in the club.

In addition to the refurbishment work that members can see, upgrades were undertaken to air-conditioning in some areas, as well as other infrastructure improvements. Maintaining your Club in a modern and comfortable state is very important, but your Board and senior management also continue to plan for the long term future of the Club, and the two key projects in this area are progressing. The first, a planning proposal for a senior’s living development in Ryedale/Terry Roads, was lodged with Ryde Council in October 2017, and at the time of writing was being further evaluated by Council officers before being submitted to Local Planning Panels, Council and Public Exhibition. The Planning Proposal, if approved, would then enable the Club to submit a development application in line with the requirements of the planning proposal (the final outcome may not be known until mid-2019).
The other long term strategic planning item is the proposed purchase of Forster Lane from Ryde Council. The sale was approved by Ryde Council in December 2017, subject to the normal processes. There was some delay in this earlier this year, but it is now back on track and we are hopeful this will also be fully resolved in 2019.
On the Football front it has been great to see the resurgence of the Ryde-Eastwood Football Club. The Football Club started as a District Club and after a break of a few years has returned to its roots in providing options for older players from local junior clubs to continue to play rugby league, as well as generally fostering rugby league in our district. Well done to Football Club President, Malcolm Chapple and all the committee and also to Football Manager, Michael Frain.
It’s at this point that I sign off and sign off for the last time, as I will be retiring at the end of this year after nearly 25 years at the helm. I reflect on what has been achieved and all that has happened over that time. The financial results over that time are there for all to see, and I am proud of the position I leave the Club in, from both a financial and facility aspect as it enters a new era.
However, the results have only been achieved because of the support I have had around me in that time. A very stable and conscientious Board, some of whom who have been with me on that 25-year journey and have provided great guidance, direction and friendship; strong leadership from the three Presidents I have served under, Harry Quinlan, Keith Aggett and Jim McClymont, and a loyal and committed management team, many of whom have been part of the team for a long time and who have given me tremendous support. At the head of this support team for the past 11 years has been Carl Pozzato and I totally endorse the Board’s decision to appoint him as the incoming CEO. I am confident he and the team will continue to take your Club forward whilst continuing to look after your day to day requirements.
Thank you to all the staff I have worked with over the past 25 years and I also reflect on those who are no longer with us; and thank you members for your support over that time. To the many members who have been aware of my pending retirement and have wished me all the best for the future, I thank you and wish you all the best in return.

NOTICE OF ORDINARY RESOLUTIONS
Notice is hereby given that at the Annual General Meeting of the Club, members will be asked to consider, and if thought fit, pass the following resolutions which are proposed as Ordinary Resolutions:
1. FIRST ORDINARY RESOLUTION
(a) That pursuant to the Registered Clubs Act the members hereby approve and`agree to expenditure by the Club in a sum not exceeding $70,000 until the next Annual General Meeting of the Club for the following activities:
(i) An annual dinner for Foundation Members and partners, as well as other special guests determined by the Board to be important to the foundation of the club.
(ii) An annual Appreciation dinner for sub-club Executive Committee Members;
(iii) Grants and subsidies to the sub-clubs;
(iv) Two free meals and beverages per fortnight for each Life Member of the Club who is not a Director of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Limited (not to exceed $120 for each meal);
(v) Presentations to members and other persons acknowledging services deemed by the directors as being of benefit to the Club
The members acknowledge that the benefits in paragraph (a) above are not available to members generally but only those members who fall within the various categories of membership referred to.
2. SECOND ORDINARY RESOLUTION
(a) That pursuant to the Registered Clubs Act the members hereby approve and agree to expenditure by the Club in a sum not exceeding $130,000 for the following benefits, professional development and education of directors until the next Annual General Meeting and being:
(i) The reasonable cost of directors attending the ClubsNSW and Leagues Clubs Australia quarterly and annual general meetings and the reasonable costs of directors attending formal functions to represent the club including but not limited to functions and dinners conducted by ClubsNSW, and Leagues Clubs Australia and including costs associated with the Directors’ partners where attendance is expected and required.
(ii) The reasonable cost of directors attending seminars, lectures, trade displays and other similar events as may be determined by the Board from time to time as being of benefit for the Club and the education of directors;
(iii) The reasonable cost of directors attending or hosting other registered clubs for the purpose of viewing and assessing their facilities and methods of operation or for the purpose of meeting and exchanging ideas with the governing bodies of those other clubs provided such attendances are approved by the Board as being necessary for the betterment of the Club;
(iv) Nine car parking spaces for the exclusive use of directors;
(v) Duty directors, while on duty, shall be entitled to the use of a table in the Club auditorium without charge;
(vi) Blazers and associated apparel for each director as may be necessary for new directors, and to replace those of existing directors which may need replacing;
(vii) The reasonable cost of a meal and beverage for each director immediately after a Board or Committee meeting on the day of that meeting where that meeting coincides with a normal meal time;
(viii) The reasonable cost of meal and beverage for each duty director and his or her partner when the duty director is on duty in the Club or within a reasonable period of that date;
(ix) The reasonable cost of directors attending the Club’s holiday units to inspect them or to assess other holiday units for purchase by the Club provided such attendances and cost thereof are approved by the Board.
(x) The reasonable cost of directors, senior management and their partners attending an annual dinner; including a token of appreciation for partners. The total value of tokens of appreciation not to exceed $1200.
(xi) The reasonable cost of directors of the Club attending an organised intrastate, interstate or overseas tour as determined by the Board of the Club for the purpose of viewing and assessing the facilities of casinos, hotels and entertainment venues and determining trends in relation to entertainment, decor, gaming, marketing and promotion and thereafter for such director to make a detailed written report thereon to the Board of the Club;
(xii) The reasonable expense incurred by directors in relation to such other duties including entertainment of special guests to the Club and other promotional activities performed by directors which activities and the expense there from are approved by the Board, on production of receipts, invoices or other proper documentary evidence of such expenditure;
(xiii) That the members approve that directors and other members be entitled to represent the Club at sponsored sports events by invitation.
(xiv) The reasonable cost of providing Directors with computer hardware as well as Internet access to access a secure website for Board meeting minutes and agenda items
(b) The members acknowledge that the benefits in paragraph (a) above, are not available to members generally, but only to those who are directors of the Club and partners of directors who are members, and senior management and their partners who are members.
THIRD ORDINARY RESOLUTION
That the members of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club approve the reclassification of the following property.

TO MEMBERS
These notes are to be read in conjunction with the proposed Ordinary Resolutions;
1. The First Resolution is to approve benefits which have traditionally been provided in the Club but which are not equally available to all members.
2. The Second Resolution is to approve an amount no greater than $130,000 for the expenditure by the Club in relation to duties performed in or about the Club by directors and expenditure for directors to attend seminars, lectures, trade displays and other similar events including the Clubs NSW Annual General Meeting and to visit other clubs to enable the Club’s governing body to be kept abreast of current trends and developments which may have a significant bearing on the nature and way in which the Club conducts its business. This resolution also includes an option for directors to participate in organised intrastate, interstate or overseas trips to view and assess facilities. This option has been included in our Annual General Meeting Agenda for the last twenty years and has been used only twice. However prior approval is required by members to ensure the Club complies with relevant legislation. Part (i) of the resolution to include reasonable expenses of partners of directors is to allow the availability of directors to attend meetings that are expected or required for their development and knowledge and are often held in distant locations.
3. The Third Resolution lists a property that was purchased in the local area in the past year. Section 41J of the Registered Clubs Act 1976 (NSW) restricts the sale of any property declared as core property by members. All the Club’s local investment properties apart from the property listed in the Third Ordinary Resolution have already been approved as non-core by members in the past. The Third Ordinary Resolution is to declare that property as a non-core asset.
There is no proposal to dispose of the listed property. The Resolution is to provide flexibility for the Board of Directors present or future to properly manage these non-core assets without the need to wait for an AGM of members or convene a costly Extraordinary General Meeting.
To be passed, each ordinary resolution must receive votes in its favour from not less than a simple majority of those members who being entitled to do so, vote in person at the meeting.
The Board of Directors recommend in favour of the Ordinary Resolutions.

7. LIFE MEMBERSHIP NOMINATION MR PAUL MOUJALLI
Paul Moujalli has been a member of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club since 1985 and has been a Director for fifteen (15yrs). With a background in finance his contribution to the administration of the Club since his appointment as a Director has been a valuable asset to the Club.
Paul is also very active in the local community, being involved with a number of community organisations and also very active within the Club providing valuable feedback to the Board on local issues and maintaining that strong link with the Club’s membership base.
The Board of Directors unanimously recommends Paul Moujalli for Life Membership of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club.

FOOTBALL REPORT
Dear Member,
Welcome to the quarterly Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club report. Our 2018 season is now completed and we have had a very successful season with three of our teams playing Semi-Finals and our 20s gold team playing Grand Final Football.
FOOTBALL ROUND UP
The first Semi-Final games were played on Sunday 19 August. Our under 18s lost their Semi 20-12 against Narrabeen, and this concluded their 2018 season. Our under 20s Silver lost 12-0 against Valley United, not a knockout game so they were still in the competition to play the following weekend in an elimination Semi-Final. Our Under 20s Gold lost 26-16 against East Hills in extra time; they also played again the following weekend in an elimination Semi-Final.
The elimination Semi-Final games were played on Sunday 26 August. Our Under 20s Silver played against Bankstown Sports and were defeated 2610, which concluded their 2018 season. Our Under 20s Gold played East Campbelltown, winning 48-10, and this win took them to the Grand Final, which was played under lights at Belmore Oval on Saturday 1 September at 6pm, the first night game for our team. Our Under 20s Gold lost 20-14 in extra time.
Our Open Age Lady Hawks finished in 6th position, a great effort considering this was the first season for our girls.
Overall our 2018 season was one of success and we look forward to next season with continued success.
On Friday 14th September we held our Football Presentation night at RydeEastwood Leagues Club with 250 people in attendance. We presented awards for all five teams for Players’ Player, Best and Fairest and Coaches’ Award. We also presented an award for the most Tries scored in a game (to Sam Dolores). This year it was six tries, our new club record.
We also had two prestige awards to present on the night. Firstly the ‘Keith Aggett Perpetual Award’, which recognises Club Person of the Year and the winner of this award, was Matt Lees. We also had ‘The John Dunlea Award’, a new award which recognises the Club Player of the Year, and 18 year old Blake Layton was the proud recipient of this prestigious award. We congratulate all award recipients for their continued outstanding efforts.
Looking forward to 2019 season, we have five teams at the moment and possibly with a further two more teams, a Combined under 23s and a Sydney Shield Side. “Watch this space”. These extra two teams, should they be approved by NSW Rugby League, will provide the perfect pathway for our Under 20s players to play in and at a higher level. The next quarterly report will provide any further information we have received pertaining to the decisions of the two extra playing teams.
It was fantastic to see all the families and friends attending the games throughout the season and we look forward to seeing you all again to support our players next season, and also at the after game functions held throughout the season. As we all know, the Ryde-Eastwood Football Club is ‘The Family Club’.

ERNA Hawks Fly!
This was Season Three of the Netball NSW Premier League competition, and once again was a thrilling season for all involved with each team franchise. Both the U20s and the Opens Competition games were tightly contested all through the season.
The ERNA Hawks Open team had a disrupted season with five of their players – Kiera Austin, Taylah Davies, Sophie Halpin, Alison Miller and Nicole Styles - all unavailable due to State Team duties during the first half of the season. Nevertheless, the strong squad of 12 were able to go through the season with one loss in round 1 and one loss in round 2. The rest of the squad included: Jessica Grant (Capt.), Laura McLaren, Emily Bills, Ebony Burnard, Veronika Jukic, Georgia Marshall and Alisha Cairns.
Going into the final round of the season the Hawks were on equal points with Central Coast Heart in a battle for the Minor Premiership. The Hawks came out firing and led from the beginning of this tightly fought battle. It was a great display of skill and determination, the Hawks winning this game by seven goals. The following week was the major semi-final with the two teams meeting once again with Central Coast Heart the more determined, winning the first two quarters. The Hawks came back firing in the second half but couldn’t quite catch Central Coast, eventually going down by two goals, the Heart going straight into the grand final. Meanwhile, the ERNA Hawks would play Manly the following week.

Hawks coach Jen Wright was quietly confident the team could beat her old Manly club and meet Heart in the grand final the following week. This was such an exciting game with the score lines fluctuating. With two minutes to go the Hawks were down by five goals, but after a remarkable comeback, full of guts and determination, the Hawks equalised the score with one second left on the clock. The game went into extra time with the Hawks eventually winning by two goals. Bring on Central Coast - we were pumped!
Grand Final day came, the stands were packed, and all team members were ready to play. Central Coast came out and dominated the first quarter, forcing errors and turnovers. CC lead by seven at quarter time, and even though the Hawks won each of the other quarters it was not enough to win the game. Unfortunately, this was not to be the ERNA Hawks’ night.
The season was one of friendship, fun and tremendously hard work by the players, officials and Committee members. Thank you to everyone for their support of our two ERNA Hawks teams in 2018.

Congratulations to Kiera Austin, who is a local junior from North Ryde, who was in the GIANTS Netball team in the Suncorp Super Netball competition for 2018 (beaten in the final) and selected again for 2019.
Kiera had a great season and was also selected as a training partner for the Australian Diamonds team and as a player in the upcoming international series called Fast5. The Fast5 competition (this game has 5 players on court instead of 7 and shorter quarters – netballs version of touch football, Rugby 7s or 20/20 cricket) will be held in Melbourne at the end of October. Australia will play NZ, England, South Africa, Jamaica and Malawi over the two day round robin event.

It is important to remember that no matter what your children’s swimming ability you should always supervise them when in and around an aquatic environment. No child is drown-proof but you can help them to be aware of the dangers, and be better prepared to enjoy the water by having them consistently participate in swimming lessons.
When you are around home pools, ensure the pool gate is closed at all times and free from anything that could be used to climb over the fence. When children are swimming, always ensure you have a designated adult supervisor in attendance.
That’s why the Fitness Edge Swim School got on board with Learn2Swim Week. We offered local children the chance to participate in swimming lessons free of charge.
They were taught safety skills and now know how much fun learning a life skill can be. More than half of the children have been booked into our regular programme to continue their aquatic experience.
