Schools Newsletter Hello and welcome to the first newsletter from the new team here at The Core. We are really excited about our upcoming programme and developments for 2016 – we wanted to get in touch to share these with you. We have a great choice of fantastic workshops, productions and projects planned but we can also design provision around the specific needs of your school and young people. An EU Referendum Eve Finale

The Should We Stay or Should We Go Show Wed 22 June 7.30pm On the night before what will be one of the most important votes in the UK’s recent history, The Core invite you to an action-packed cabaret show to help you make up your mind about the EU referendum. Featuring up-to-the-minute plays and sketches based on the week’s news, performance lectures, special guests from both sides of the argument and a house band, the evening is all tied together by a host who understands that whether you’re ‘in’ or ‘out’, you’ve just got to ‘shake it all about’. Having visited towns, festivals and cities across the country, this entertaining show returns home to a fun-filled finale in Corby.

Branagh Theatre Live: Romeo & Juliet Thu 7 July 7pm Shakespeare’s tale of forbidden love in a version by Kenneth Branagh. Richard Madden and Lily James star as Romeo and Juliet, with Sir Derek Jacobi as Mercutio. Broadcast live to our screen from the Garrick Theatre in London.

Dance Bronze In A Week Monday 25 – Friday 29 July 10am – 4pm Students can take part in our week-long dance project where students will learn about different dance forms, techniques and take part in their very own showcase.

Returning to The Core after a sell-out run last year, this exciting production of Macbeth – Blood Will Have Blood is an accessible and unforgettable introduction to Shakespeare’s shocking story of ambition and greed re-invented for 9-13 years-olds.

Using razor sharp storytelling, a dramatic on-screen world and a heart-stopping soundtrack, this one-man adaptation by The Core’s Director Nick Walker, takes us on a break-neck journey through the blood-soaked world of Macbeth in the 400th anniversary year of Shakespeare’s death.

Motionhouse

Scattered Fri 7 October 7pm Scattered combines Motionhouse’s trademark highly physical dance theatre and mesmerising digital imagery in a unique interaction between film and live performance.

The show explores our relationship with water as seven dancers delve into its majesty and savagery, plunging into an ocean, tumbling down a waterfall and sliding on an avalanche to a frozen landscape of arctic beauty.

Performed on a curved floor, Scattered uses projection technology, daring choreography, aerial harnesses and bungees to create an extraordinary world where dancers and images interact seamlessly.

FREE Arts Leaders Workshops

This year we have a very big decision to make and The Core is ensuring that everyone can Get Involved. Our Should We Stay Or Should We Go Show helps to make up your mind about the UKs most important vote – the EU referendum.

We wanted to ensure that people of all ages can get involved, so we have developed an opportunity for a local artist to come into your place of learning to share the importance of decision making, leadership and citizenship through creative means.

These will be on a first come first served basis and will need to be delivered before Wed 22 June.

A local artist will join you throughout the week to work with small groups through registration time, assemblies, classes. Young people will explore: • Decision making • Debating • Persuasive talking • Presenting This will culminate in a soeakers corner on the Friday that week.

Rockingham School

Working in partnership with Rockingham School we have delivered a project to inspire children to write with a purpose. Using exciting performances and immersive techniques, practitioners have worked with the whole school (over 280 children) to: • increase independent writing skills • raise the enthusiasm for writing • provide them real life experiences of writing for a purpose.

Over a course of three terms we have delivered six writing days which began with an excited experience to capture the imagination of the school. The practitioners then worked to use this stimulus to create a piece which was showcased throughout the schools. This has included things like the discovery of a dinosaur bone to create stimulus for Journalism and an Alien Landing to develop narrative.

“I enjoyed the writing task because I used my imagination and I could end the story however I wanted.

I made sure this was my best piece of work because I tried hard with my handwriting, and I added in as much detail as I could.’”

“The writing days have inspired children to produce wonderful pieces of work. They have enjoyed having a purpose, especially working towards a deadline for the pirate show. I love to watch the children interact with the actresses and see the joy they have in sharing their work with them.”
