VictorWuisamarriedmanwithtwo childrenwhobeganhisminingcareer attheXijiangAsheleCopperMine, thelargestundergroundminein China.Hisexper�seandacademic understandingofgeologyandmining sciencestoodout,whichenabledhim toquicklyadvanceinhiscareer.He workedfirstasaGeologistandthen asaMiningEngineer.Helaterbecame GeneralManageroftheShuiyindong GoldMineinsouthwestChina's GuizhouProvince.From2020,he workedatGuyanaGoldfields,a Canadiancompanythatwasonthe vergeofbankruptcyduetofinancial problems.Togetherwithhisteam, theysavedthecompany.

Basedonthis,MineExplora�on startsdrillingboreholes.These holesarelogged(described)by Explora�onGeologists.Logging involveslookingforcertain structuresintherockthatmaytell somethingaboutthepresenceor absenceofgold.Next,theseholes aresampled(upto1.5m)and forwardedtothelab(FilaborRGM lab).Theresultsobtainedarethen importedintoGemcom.

A2017auditpointedthisout directly.TheRGMmine cannotcon�nuetodepend ontwotransformersdowngrading voltagefromtheAfobaka hydroelectricplantfrom161kVto 41.60kV.Theremustbeaspare transformerthatcantakeoverin caseoneofthetwotransformers fails,breaksdown,orneeds maintenance.Ifthisdoesnot happen,approximately40%of produc�onstopsinonefellswoop. Asparetransformerisnotaluxury butanecessity,accordingtoKarel Abinie,MillElectrical Superintendent.
Karelexplainsthatittakesafew monthsforatransformertobe repaired.Ittakesabouttwoyearsto haveanewtransformerreadyto buybecauseitmustfirstbe customized.Thenthereiselectronic tes�ngatthefactory,followedby transporta�ontosite,assemblyon site,tes�ngagainandonlythen connec�ngittothegrid.This processtakesmonths.Butwhat madethethirdtransformereven moreurgentisthatT1(Transformer 1)isleakingandneedsrepairvery soon.
Theprocesstopurchaseanew transformerbeganin2018through thecompanyLabrador-Weg, accordingtoKarel.Thetransformer wastobetestedinthepresenceof RGMTechniciansin2020,butthis didnothappenduetoCOVID-19. Whatfollowedwasavirtual electronictest.
Assemblyofthetransformerbegan in2022."Webroughtthe transformertothesite.And togetherwithourelectricalteam andlocalcontractorssuchasEBS, COBO,Hi-RangerandFernandes, westartedassemblingthe transformer,"Karelsays.Thisyear, themechanicalpartwillcon�nueto beassembled."Wearenowinthe processofinstallinganoil containmentarea(receptacle). AgainthisyearLabrador-Wegwill cometothesitetostartuptheoil process.Wewilltreattheoiland putitinthetransformerandthen
doafinalelectronictes�ng.Thenit willbereadyforuse."
However,hardworkisbeingdone togetthetransformer,intheevent ofT1orT2failure,upandrunning quickly.Thisrequiresclear regula�onsonhowtogetthe transformerupandrunningassoon aspossible.Thepreliminaryworkis beingdonenow,accordingtothe MillElectricalSuperintendent."You can'tli�thetransformerandmove it,"Karelexplains."Youhaveto makeaconnec�onfromwherethe transformerisnow."That connec�on,i.e.connec�ngittothe grid,mustbedoneaccordingto clearguidelines,andthatrequiresa study.
Butthereisarush.Asmen�onedin theintro,T1isleakingoil.According toKarel,apartfromtheleakage,the transformerisdoingitsjobfine.But hewantstorepairthistransformer assoonaspossible.Thedepartmentiscurrentlyintheprocessof orderingparts.Oncetheparts arrive,thetransformercanbe repairedwithinfourdays.A�erthe repair,thetransformerwillbe testedandreconnectedtothegrid.
Assemblingthetransformerwasan excellent�mefortheRosebel Technicianstohonetheirskills. AccordingtotheMillElectrical Superintendent,everyprojecta serviceproviderperformshereonsiteendsinemployeetraining."We alwaysconcludewithatraining sessionsothatasmuchknowledge aspossibleistransferred.Also,as manyemployeesaspossibleare assignedtotheproject.Duringthe installa�onofT3,Linemanand Electricianswereassignedtowork withforeignerstoperformthe tests."
Plansfor2023
Somemajorprojectsareplanned forthisyear.Itwillbeabusyyear.In addi�ontoassemblingandhaving T3onstandby,T1willberepaired
thisyear.Theoilcontainmentarea underT3willalsobecompletedthis year.Theannualinfraredscanon thetransmissionanddistribu�on linesandSolarFarmisscheduled. AttheAfobakahydroplant,ahighvoltagebreakerwillbereplacedand theBolMil1and2motors(4500HP) willberepaired.Finally,weneedto dorepairsandmaintenancework onthelow-andmedium-voltage switchgearandbreakersinthe networkthisyear.
Anelectricaltransformerisadevice usedtotransformelectricalenergy fromonevoltageleveltoanother.It consistsoftwocoilsofwireplaced closetogether,separatedbyaniron core.Whenanelectriccurrentissent throughonecoil,itcreatesamagne�c fieldthatinducescurrentintheother coil,thustransferringelectricalenergy.
Therearetwotypesoftransformers: thestepuptransformerandthestep downtransformer.Astepup transformerincreasesthevoltagefrom alowerleveltoahigherlevel,whilea downgradetransformerdecreases voltagefromahigherleveltoalower level.Bothtypesoftransformerscan beusedtoadjustthevoltagetomeet therequirementsofaspecific applica�onortoimprovetheefficiency ofanelectricalsystem.
Itisimportanttonotethat transformersarenot100percent efficient.Thisisbecausethereissome resistanceinthecoilsandthemagne�c fieldisgenerated,whichcanleadto energylossintheformofheat. Therefore,transformersareo�enused incombina�onwithotherdevicesto improveefficiency.
AtRGM,downgradetransformersare usedtodowngradethecurrentfrom theAvobakaPowerSta�onfrom161 kVto4,16kV.Thisvoltageisusedto powertheMill.Tosupplyelectricityto therestofthemine,thevoltageis furtherupgradedto12,47kVand transmi�edthroughtheWest PowerlineandEastPowerlinehigh voltagelines.
Beforethepowerreachesthe buildings,itisloweredagaininthe mastfrom12,47kVto110V,220Vand 460V.

OnMarch29,2023,the CommunityRela�ons Department(CRD)conducted CulturalAwarenesstrainingforsome membersofthenewmanagement team.Sincethen,90%ofthenew Managementhasa�endedthe training.
Accordingto MarijkeAgwense,Small ScaleMining&EngagementLead,this trainingprovidesbasicskillsaboutthe Surinameseculture."Thiswillnotonly enablethemtohaveknowledgeofthe culturalvaluesofthenewwork environment,butalsotocontributeto theirsuccessandflourishinadynamic workenvironment,"saysMarijke.
OnFeb.15,2023,13students receivedtheirBasicDronePilot TrainingCoursecer�ficateinthe ConferenceRoomoftheAdmin Building.Thiscoursewasspecial becauseitwasthefirsttrainingwith thehighlyadvancedDJIMatrice300 RTK(M300RTK)drone.Becauseofthe al�tude,thisdronecanreach,the trainingwasalsoreviewedand cer�fiedbyCASAS.
TheM300RTKdroneishighly advancedandspeciallydesignedfor industrialandpublicsafetyopera�ons. Itcanfly7kmhighand15kmfar.But themostremarkablethingaboutthis droneisthatitalsohasastealth mode,whichmeansthatthedrone cannotbeheardatadistanceof2 meters.
Atotalof30RGMemployees successfullycompletedthecourse.
Inconjunc�onwithPhagwa,the CampServicesDepartmentorganized aDuckCurrycompe��on. Unfortunately,onlyoneteam registered.However,thiswasnotto spoilthefunandthecontesttookplace asusual.
Group MineMaintenance won,of course,butalsowondeservedly.Even thoughtheyweretheonlypar�cipant, theirduckcurrywasverytasty.
The CampKitchen started organizingTeamBuildingac�vi�es inthelastweekofMarch2023. Theteambuildingac�vi�eswereheld atPinaHut.
