Connectivity Is Key

An emerging dynamic group of Rochester area young talent is coming together as a part of the RYT Network

Young marketing executives use it as a key tool for making connections. Financial consultants use it to obtain new clients and often make it a key part of their overall business strategy. Trades see opportunities to form partnerships with other industries. Nonprofit professionals see it as a necessary effort to expand their organizations. What is it? It’s networking, and for young professionals in the world of business, networking programs help smooth out the potholes on the road to success.

The Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce recognizes the importance of providing young professionals with the networking opportunities they need to establish themselves within the region’s professional community. That’s why the Chamber offers its Rochester Area Young Talent Network (RYT Network) as means to provide opportunities for the young talent to create connections, build relationships within their specific industry, and develop a sense of community within their professional lives.

OCTOBER 2023 — ROCHESTER AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE | 5

According to Kaytlyn Anzivino, the Workforce Initiatives & RYT Network Director, the RYT Network program membership is available to employees of current members of the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce ages 21 to 39 for a flat rate of $65/year per individual.

“As a RYT Network member, they have access to networking events and socials, which are hosted at various restaurants and businesses around the Rochester area, featuring food and drinks, activities, entertainment and so much more,” Anzivino says.

In addition, RYT Network members are invited to participate in professional and career interactive development sessions, which are designed to equip the participants with the knowledge and tools need to excel in the Rochester area.

“And our annual signature event, the RYT Summit, is an energizing event for Rochester area young talent to grow professionally and personally,” Anzivino says. “This conference provides opportunities to hear from compelling speakers, create connections, and develop leadership skills.”

understanding of the social, economic, and other issues impacting the Rochester area.

“In addition, the program’s industry engagement opportunities highlights local companies and developments around the Rochester area,” Anzivino explains. “By exploring these facilities, you will build a better understanding of the variety of businesses that make our community thrive.”

Of course, one of the best ways to truly engage with a community at large is by volunteering. That’s why the RYT Network program provides ample opportunities for members to further engage with the community through volunteer efforts that help build a better

Tonya Burns, commercial lender at Wings Credit Union and RYT Network program member, first heard about the RYT Network in the Weekly Update email sent out by the Chamber.

phase of their career (new & upcoming) or seasoned veterans who someday might be offering you your next job,” Burns says.

Burns has participated in one of the program’s recent September events, Speed Networking, at The Workshop Food Hall & Bar.

“I was hoping to meet people from different industries in the Rochester area, and that I did,” Burns says. “It was a great turnout and I left with many new connections and great conversations.”

Burns further points out that the RYT Network membership age range is 21-39, which is pretty broad, but in a good way.

“I’m looking forward to meeting other RYT Network members who are just starting their careers or who may be considering making their next move,” Burns says. “The RYT Network brings the young professional community together in Rochester, which is a must in the fast pace world we live in today.”

Kirk Olson, associate account manager at Weller Brothers, also heard about the RYT program through some of the Chamber events and emails, as well as his co-worker, Ben, who was the person who really urged Olson to apply.

“I am getting towards the upper age limit, so I wasn't planning on signing up for RYT. But when Ben signed up, I thought I would too,” Olson says. “The Chamber did a good job of making it appealing, so I thought it was worth a shot, even if I only have a little time left to be in the group.”

What Olson finds to be the most intriguing part of the RYT Network program is seeing new faces and growing a network of professionals that will be present in the community for years to come.

“There are a lot of younger professionals in Rochester that are doing great things, and if I can learn anything from them, I call it a win,” Olson says. “I attend several Chamber events each month, but the RYT

Network offers a way to develop leadership skills and a strong network as we grow our careers.”

Olson has attended both RYT events that have been held to this point (RYT Speed Networking and CEO Connections).

“Due to the format of the Speed Networking event, it made me reach outside of my normal circle, and I met a lot of great people in a short amount of time,” Olson says. “The CEO Connections event allowed members of RYT the opportunity to have open discussions with two successful business leaders in our community. Both of the events have allowed me to do exactly what I wanted when

I joined RYT – develop my leadership skills and expand my network.”

“I look forward to meeting other professionals in town, with the opportunity to grow the professional relationships and friendships while helping each other succeed in our careers.”

Join the RYT Network online at www.rochestermnchamber. com/ryt or contact Kaytlyn Anzivino at kaytlyna@ rochestermnchamber.com.

Thanks to the RYT Network program, Olson is excited to see what the group of younger professionals can do in the future, and how everyone can help each other become as successful as possible going forward.

OVERVIEW OF ROCHESTER'S Local Sales Tax Renewal

November 7th is election day for Rochester, where residents will be able to vote on the renewal of the local sales tax. The local sales tax, first approved in 1982, would generate $205 million to fund four community infrastructure and development projects including street reconstruction, an economic vitality fund, flood control and water quality, and a regional sports and recreation complex.

The local sales tax renewal is a funding tool for critical projects that can improve the quality of life for citizens, support infrastructure development that serves the business community, and can help drive economic growth in the region.

Rochester has utilized the half-percent local sales tax to collect revenue for various public investment projects. University of Minnesota research estimates that 43% of the local sales tax revenue is paid by non-residents. Numerous areas of Rochester have had projects financed through the various local sales tax extensions. Perhaps the most well known project is the initial construction of the existing flood control structures which include reservoirs and floodwalls that protect the infrastructure of both businesses and homes.

The Vote Yes-Renew Rochester, a group consisting of the Rochester Area Builders, Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce, Rochester Area Economic Development Inc. (RAEDI), Rochester Area Foundation, and Rochester Sports Foundation announce the collective support of their organizations for the renewal of Rochester’s local sales tax.

The projects included in the renewal of the local sales tax will encourage economic growth in Rochester, improve community infrastructure, and enhance the area quality of life for the residents, businesses, and visitors of Rochester. We encourage you to VOTE YES, in support of renewing Rochester’s local sales tax.

THE FOUR PROJECTS APART OF THE LOCAL SALES TAX RENEWAL

Street Reconstruction

Street reconstruction plays a key role in ensuring safe access to businesses and homes throughout Rochester while enhancing the quality of life for the community, visitors, and those who commute to Rochester.

FAQ

How are road projects prioritized?

Criteria includes pavement age and condition, coordination with public utility needs, distribution across the community, proximity to planned development, and connections to projects not eligible for sales tax.

If not renewed, how will the street reconstruction be funded?

Construction will be delayed while alternative funding is determined. Assessments, property tax increases, and other fees are local funding options that also would be considered as alternative funding if the local sales tax is not renewed.

Can federal funds pay for the street reconstruction?

Approximately 80% of the road miles in Rochester are not strong candidates for state or federal funding.

Flood Control & Water Quality

While certain areas are more prone to floods in Rochester, major floods impact both personal and commercial traffic, including services of mail delivery, utilities, emergency services, and more in the community. The economic impact of a major flood event is significant and directly effects the community and region.

FAQ

If not renewed, how will these efforts be funded? Critical investments would still need to be made, without the local sales tax, property owners in Rochester will likely bear the entire cost.

If flood control infrastructure is not maintained will flood insurance premiums be impacted?

There is a greater risk that insurance premiums will be impacted and an increased number of homes would need flood insurance if the system is not expanded.

How does this affect those not in the flood zone? Major flood events affect traffic, mail delivery, utilities, emergency services, and much more. In addition, over $1.5 billion in Rochester homes and businesses is directly protected by the existing structures.

Economic Vitality Fund

The economic vitality fund can provide investments in housing, workforce development, and childcare. These three issues impact both businesses and community.

FAQ

How will the funds be used?

The focus will be on economic development strategies such as affordable housing, regional revitalization, workforce development programs, and infrastructure.

Regional Sports & Recreation Complex (RSRC)

The regional sports and recreation facility can capitalize on Rochester’s status as a regional hub, attracting additional tourism and generating a substantial economic impact to the area while expanding available recreation space for the community.

Regional Sports & Recreation Complex (RSRC)

The regional sports and recreation facility can capitalize on Rochester’s status as a regional hub, attracting additional tourism and generating a substantial economic impact to the area while expanding available recreation space for the community.

PRELIMINARY PLANS INCLUDE

• Multi purpose indoor courts

• Community flex spaces

• Indoor children’s play area

• Outdoor multi purpose fields

FAQ

What programming will be featured at the RSRC?

A mix of local leagues, regional tournaments, and public drop-in programming is envisioned. These types of activities would utilize the proposed turf fields including soccer and lacrosse, as well as multi-purpose indoor courts including pickleball, basketball and volleyball.

What sports and recreation programming needs will the RSRC meet?

It will meet the demands for indoor and outdoor recreational space that currently is at or over capacity in Rochester. RSRC will also provide state-of-the-art facilities to relieve pressure on access to other facilities and attract more state and local amateur sporting events.

Will the RSRC fields, courts, and facilities be available for public use?

Yes, the amenities at RSRC will be available to the public.

What criteria are being considered for the location of the RSRC?

A site of 75-90 acres would be required. Preferrably, this would be near other entertainment, dining, and hospitality amenities. Who will manage and oversee the day to day of the RSRC?

Funding, design, location, and other factors must be considered before deciding on operational and management.

What will be the primary expenses ongoing for the sports complex?

Staffing and personnel, supplies and equipment, cost of goods sold, and capital improvement allocations.

How will the regional sports & recreation complex drive revenue to support itself?

Based on research and comparable facilities, Sports Facilities Companies concluded this facility would be a near break-even operation.

Olmsted County Enhancing Public Services with Two Facility Projects

These initiatives will improve operations and services for the Sheriff’s Office and Public Works department.

The Olmsted County Board of Commissioners has taken a significant step toward enhancing public services by awarding construction contracts for two county facility projects. These initiatives will improve operations and services for both the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office and Public Works department.

PUBLIC WORKS SERVICE CENTER EXPANSION

A nearly 10,000-square-foot expansion of the Public Works Service Center (PWSC), located at 1188 50th Street SE in Rochester, will begin this fall with expected completion in fall of 2024.

The expanded facility will feature larger, more versatile spaces for meetings and collaboration. Employees from several departments that currently reside in other county facilities, including the Olmsted Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), Parks, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), will relocate to the property when complete. This strategic move will streamline communication and services among these essential teams. A dedicated break room and maintenance area will also be added.

“We are so excited to see our PWSC expansion project begin,” said Olmsted County Public Works Division Administrator Kaye Bieniek. “Several of our departments that work so closely together will now be in one facility, providing for increased efficiencies, additional collaborative opportunities, and exemplary customer service.”

Relocation of PWSC front office employees

During construction, front office employees will temporarily relocate from the PWSC to 2122 Campus Drive SE in Rochester. Phone numbers and email addresses for employees will remain unchanged.

Impact to residents

Residents should avoid visiting the PWSC during construction. Please call 507-328-7070 or email pwservice@ olmstedcounty.gov if you have inquiries or require assistance from the Public Works team.

REGIONAL PUBLIC SAFETY TRAINING CENTER

Near the Public Works Service Center, construction on a 17,500-square-foot facility at the Regional Public Safety Training Center will begin this fall with expected completion in fall 2024.

Key features of the facility include a dedicated defensive tactics training space and the ability to conduct multiple trainings simultaneously. It could also facilitate seamless coordination during emergency or disaster responses, offering a space for multiple county departments.

“We have a strong need for comprehensive law enforcement training and unified response to critical incidents including potential and real disasters. That’s why a facility like this is essential,” said Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson. “This space will enhance our capabilities to ensure the highest quality training for all public safety disciplines. You can’t underestimate how much it means to have the proper facility to conduct this critical training. It really matters when our communities need support the most.”

“The facility at the Regional Public Safety Training Center is a result of the Board of Commissioners commitment to ensuring sheriff’s deputies and other first responders are able to help in any crisis or emergency,” said Olmsted County Board Chair Gregg Wright. “Additionally, these projects demonstrate Olmsted County’s commitment to fostering collaboration, strengthening our capabilities to respond to county needs, and ensuring that we will be able to deliver essential services in the future.”

Rochester Receives Urban and Community Forest Grant

These investments will support Rochester's goal in increase its urban canopy

The City of Rochester was awarded a $1 million Urban and Community Forest Grant from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service. With this grant funding, the City of Rochester’s Forestry Division will plant trees within the public right-of-way and on private property in underserved areas. These investments will support Rochester’s goal to increase its urban canopy from 28 to 35 percent by 2035. This project will help Rochester reduce carbon emissions, decrease temperatures, enhance public safety, improve mental health, and create other significant benefits.

According to City Forester Jeff Haberman, “This available funding is historic. Tree canopy is being recognized as a critical tool in combating our changing climate. Trees are a valuable component of city infrastructure that provide

tangible benefits in: mitigating storm water runoff and effects of urban heat, reducing energy consumption in both summer and winter, and significantly impacting human health and wellness. This money will help us plant trees in areas of our community that have a disproportionate amount of canopy cover.”
