Rochester-area businesses are empowered to succeed in a diverse and collaborative climate.
The family business. It has long been a staple in the American economy. According to the Small Business Administration, about 80 to 90 percent of all U.S. businesses are family-owned or controlled. Ranging in size from small ‘mom and pop’ shops to Fortune 500 entities, family businesses generate about half of the country's gross national product (GNP) and half of the total wages paid.
For Bob Nuss, president of Nuss Truck & Equipment, his family business has been a staple in the Rochester region, as well as in other cities dotting the upper Midwest, since 1973.
In fact, when your name is on the door, there’s a level of pride and determination to continue the family legacy. And that’s exactly the case for Bob Nuss, who decided to move to Rochester more than 50 years ago from Rockford, Illinois where his father, Charles Nuss, had worked in the Mack Truck business, first as a mechanic and then as a dealer since the late 1950s. Originally, Charles opened his own repair shop, Charley Nuss Garage, and eventually launched Mack of Rockford in 1959.
Bob Nuss graduated from St. Cloud State University with a business degree and worked for Valspar as a sales territory manager in both Memphis and Chicago. With the Vietnam War in full swing, Nuss was called up for active duty for six months. After returning, Nuss’ father offered him the opportunity to run the family business as he retired in 1973.

Eventually Bob made his first acquisition of Mack Trucks of Rochester –the first of many acquisitions and expansion in the company’s history.
sure the company is making an impact on the industry and earning the trust and respect of customers across various industries.
"Our collection of trucks is open to the general public and people come from all over to see our collection and spend a couple of hours going through the space"
At the forefront of Bob’s vision for the company is to meet customers’ needs. That’s why he worked to strategically expand the products offered by the company with several acquisitions, including acquiring Volvo Trucks and Volvo Construction Equipment as part of the Sweeney Brothers Minnesota acquisition in 2008. “Our construction customers gave us a way to expand our business horizontally,” Nuss says.
Today, Nuss Truck & Equipment offers new and used truck leasing and financing, full-service body shops and custom engineered trucking and trailers for customers’ specific needs. And Bob continues to lead the charge in making
The Nuss Collection officially opened its doors to the public on September 25, 2021. On that day, the Nuss family and Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Nuss Collection to celebrate.
And like their father and grandfather, Greg and Brad Nuss, Bob’s sons are geared to take over the family business and continue its legacy as Greg currently serves as Chief Operating Officer, and Brad is Chief Financial Officer. Of course, after such a long-standing career in the industry, Nuss has earned accolades aplenty. Most recently, he was awarded the American Truck Historical Society’s (ATHS) 50 Years of Service Award at the ATHS National Convention in Reno, NV in June 2023.
And as the quintessential family business that provides an award-winning workplace environment for its employees, Nuss Truck & Equipment captured the attention of former President Donald Trump, when the president visited Nuss Truck & Equipment’s Burnsville branch in 2019. Nuss was able to showcase and celebrate the impact Nuss Truck & Equipment has made on the industry and the region at large.
One thing that Nuss is most proud is the family’s continuous goal of giving back to the community as often as possible. One unique area in which the Nuss family continues to make an impact is through the Nuss Collection, a museum of historical trucks and vehicles related to the trucking industry that Nuss has collected throughout the years. The museum celebrates the trucking industry and the tremendous impact it has made on our society throughout the years.
“Our collection of trucks is open to the general public and people come from all over to see our collection and spend a couple of hours going through the space, ” Nuss says. “And we have people who will make equipment donations to add to our museum.” From vintage buses to heavy-duty construction vehicles to antique fire trucks, the Nuss Collection includes a wide range of vehicles, including those that helped build the Hoover Dam as well as the national highway system.
And when Nuss is not helping run his expansive company, you can find him giving individual tours to visitors at the museum. “I just love it. I love showing people all the different trucks and vehicles and sharing our love of the trucking industry.”
Recently, the Nuss Collection created a “Trucking Tribute – Dedicated to Building America” digital vault initiative to capture legacy stories about individuals’ experiences with the trucking industry. The organization is gathering stories from people who may have sold trucks, driven trucks or working with trucks in some capacity to capture stories for future generations from which future generations can learn.
While the Nuss Collection is one avenue of enveloping the general public into the folds of Nuss Truck & Equipment, another is by giving back to the community through the Rochester Area Foundation.
“Several years ago, I came up with the idea that we would give each employee $100 to donate to a charity of their choice through the Rochester Area Foundation,” Nuss says. From organizations helping veterans to those helping the homeless, Nuss Truck & Equipment employees are making an impact.
“It promotes goodwill and the betterment of mankind,” Nuss says. Since establishing this unique community giving initiative, Nuss Truck & Equipment, through its employees having donated about $750,000 to the donor advised funds at the Rochester Area Foundation.
“I was shocked. I had no idea we had given this much over years. We don’t brag about what we give to charity, but it was wonderful to hear,” Nuss says. In addition, the company donates to food shelters and other nonprofits throughout the Rochester community.
Looking ahead, Nuss is excited about the future of his company, as his family members continue to lead the charge, making the day-to-day decisions about the company, its products, employees and overall growth strategies. “I don’t know why I’d ever retire,” Nuss says. “As long as they let me come in and help out, like giving tours at the Nuss Collection, that would be great. It’s been a good run, but I want to be a part of it in whatever small way I can.”

Dating back to 1924, Soldiers Field Memorial Park has been a beacon for generations of Rochester residents who enjoyed the park’s expansive area. The American Legion was instrumental in securing 160 acres for the park, with the Legion’s primary goal to “provide play and recreational facilities for all citizens and children of the city, and to be a memorial to veterans of all wars.”
Fast forward 100 years and Soldiers Field is getting a facelift of sorts, updating the recreational offerings and facilities that will keep families and individuals coming back for more.
The park’s swimming pool, built in 1936 has been a popular destination for generations of Rochester residents, and has been rebuilt over time. In addition, the golf course was the first development in the park. Initially, it was six, and then nine holes and was eventually extended to an 18hole course. As with any facility established nearly 100 years ago, it was evident that Soldiers Field needed to be updated to meet the needs and interests of 21st-century families.
Revamping the memorial park has been a long-term endeavor. Over the last several years, the City of
Rochester has reexamined and solidified the long-term (10+ year) vision for the Soldiers Field Memorial Park, while identifying short- and long-term strategies to reach that vision.
Paul Widman, Director of Parks and Recreation at the City of Rochester, explains that the Phase 1 improvement of Soldiers Field include the aquatics facility, southwest trail connection, playground improvements including a nature play area, additional picnic shelter, and basketball courts.
"The project is far reaching and adds so many components, such as the three waterslides, the lazy river, and the nature play area, and will appeal to a wide variety of the community"
The initial vision included all of these elements but not to the scale and level of completion that will be realized in 2024.
“This is due to the $10 million investment from DMC and a $5 million dollar federal grant,” Widman says. “We received smaller grants along the way. We started out with a $7 million budget from the votersupported Parks Referendum of 2029 for this project, so it's exciting to see what the extra investment has been able to provide for the community.”
Rochester parks department’s history. As Widman explains, extensive
Community involvement in the 2022 Master Plan Update at Soldiers Field was by far the most extensive in the
"Rochester’s outdoor aquatics facilities have been outdated for many years. The new aquatics center will provide more summer recreation options for residents of all ages"
engagement was a requirement we placed in the request for proposals. HKGI teamed up with Collaborative Design Group to gain feedback throughout the community, and the
parks and recreation department had the benefit of working with the design team and the City of Rochester Communications and Engagement team in this effort.
“The efforts included park user group feedback meetings and an extensive online survey was conducted,” Widman says. “An interactive mapping tool was used to further fine tune the activities and amenities that were in demand by the community.”
Myron Salz, President at Centerstone Plaza Hotel Soldiers Field and Twigs Tavern & Grille, says that the Soldiers Field park projects are expected to have an extremely positive impact on the community.
“The new park will also appeal to the many visitors to our town, be it for medical related visits or sports events,” Salz says. “The park will provide the perfect place to relax and soak in nature or let the kids release some energy in the aquatic park or playgrounds.”
At Centerstone Plaza Hotel and Twigs Tavern & Grille, Salz and his team are very excited about the new park areas, as their guests will have easy access, only a short walk away from everything the park offers.
“The project is far reaching and adds so many components, such as the three waterslides, the lazy river, and the nature play area, and will appeal to a wide variety of the
community,” Salz says. “In the future, as the popularity of the park grows, it would be a great fit to add some sort of amphitheater to have various performances for people to enjoy.”
One of the much-anticipated components of Soldiers Field upgrades is the new aquatics center – which is expected to entice people of all ages to enjoy all the center has to offer year-round. The City of Rochester conducted a process very similar to community co-design to develop the concept for the aquatics center.
“We give credit to the success of the aquatics design to the community leaders who participated in the process. They had a tall order to fill:
upscale the pool with more activities for kids and adults, increase the user capacity and do not impact the golf course. It seems nearly impossible, but the results speak for themselves,” Widman says.
The expected completion of the improvements to Soldiers Field Memorial Park is early June, but is weather dependent. The targeted opening of the aquatics center is June as well.
“Rochester’s outdoor aquatics facilities have been outdated for many years. The new aquatics center will provide more summer recreation options for residents of all ages,” Widman says. The pool capacity will increase from 800 to nearly 1,200, allowing more people to enjoy
the new amenities. “The vision that began in the 1920s will continueserving all residents with a focus on youth recreation options. Soldiers Field is also set up as a venue for special events,” Widman says. “We host Rochester Pride, Rochesterfest, numerous Veterans Memorial events and other community gatherings. We hope to see community activities expand at this site.”
With so much discussion on ways to vitalize downtown Rochester and give people a reason to come downtown, the park project will certainly help towards that end.
“The new park will be a perfect bookend to Discovery Walk, providing people with the opportunity to walk to and from downtown to dine, shop,
etc.,” Widman says. “And they will also enjoy all the amenities the new park areas will have to offer.”

Taking an in-depth look at Remick's career path, progression, and achievements A discussion with Rochester Athletic Club CEO Matt Remick
Tell us about your career path to becoming President of the Rochester Athletic Club (RAC)?
The Rochester Athletic Club (RAC) opened in 1993. I was in college pursuing a degree in Entrepreneurship at that time, and my dad and I took a family business class together in 1995. We thought it would be best if I went to work somewhere else before working at the RAC. I worked for another business and met my wife. We started a family, and I did not want to travel as much as I was, so I asked my dad if there was a need at the RAC. There was a need for some of my technology skills, so I started at the RAC in 2000. I purchased my first shares in 2000, led a substantial project in 2004 – 2006, and purchased shares from two other partners in 2008. I became President at that time.
What experiences have had a significant impact in shaping you as a leader?
Renovating the RAC in 2004 – 2006 was my first big project. We went from 185,000 square feet to 260,000 and created the Neighborhood (our Family Entertainment area). The years 2007 – 2010 brought the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center and the housing recession. I quickly learned the need for good cash management as a business owner. In 2012, I was able to bring on my team to manage the club, and I learned not be afraid to bring in outside perspective when things do not feel right in your business. Navigating the pandemic was an exercise in pivoting, listening and leading, while reaffirming the need for strong cash management.
What changes in trends and needs within the recreation and fitness industry have you seen?
• Cardiovascular exercise has been steady, but there are advancements in technology and user interfaces that need to be kept current
• Emphasis in Functional Training (training with movements we use day to day)
• During the pandemic, there was tremendous growth in tennis and swimming demand
• Most recently, there has been an increased demand for strength training, and a national demand increase for Pickleball
How has the RAC evolved over time since opening in 1993 to meet those changes to the industry?
Growing the footprint and doubling down on our family focus by adding the Neighborhood in 2004 – 2006 was our first large renovation. Since 2012 we have reinvested in the club with a minimum of one project each year or preventative maintenance. It is important to continue to evolve as customer demands evolve over time. We use member feedback to prioritize our renovations as well as our fitness industry peer network. Things slowed during the pandemic, but we have things in the works for 2023 and the future.
As you look ahead to the future, what do you see as the outlook for the recreation and fitness industry as well as the RAC?
We offer a comfortable and motivational environment to serve our members in whatever their needs may be. We provide social opportunities as much as fitness tools and instruction. One trend we are keeping our eye on is the growing demand for GLP-1 medications. Estimates are that as many of 30 million Americans may take GLP-1 medications by 2030 (9% of the population). Strength training is even more important for people using those medications as it may impact their muscle mass. Our industry will be critical in helping those patients. Strength training, in general, is being seen as more important for healthy aging, maintaining balance, improved sleep and other benefits. We recently added EGYM equipment to the RAC. It simplifies strength training, while hyperpersonalizing it, and increases the effectiveness of strength training for many people. Our members have had an overwhelming positive reaction to it. Tools like EGYM will grow in importance.

The Alzheimer’s Association advocates for state and federal legislation to change policies and increase resources, partner with physicians and healthcare systems, and have 1,100 active research projects in 56 countries.
Each month, we learn from a Chamber member about their offerings, history, a unique fact, and their business outlook
No one should face Alzheimer's and all other dementia alone. The Alzheimer's Association offers no-charge support, education, and resources to help families. With over nine offices, including one in Rochester, the Minnesota-North Dakota chapter ensures that help is never far away. We spoke to Director of Communications with the Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter, Amy Wartick, to learn more about the Alzheimer's Association.
Q: Tell us about the Alzheimer's Association. What does your organization offer to the Rochester region?
A: The Alzheimer’s Association is a nonprofit leading the way to end Alzheimer’s and other dementia — by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support. We advocate for state and federal legislation to change policies and increase resources, partner with physicians and healthcare systems, and have 1,100 active research projects in 56 countries. In Minnesota, there are nearly 102,000 people living with Alzheimer’s supported by 164,000 unpaid caregivers. Alzheimer’s takes more lives than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined in the U.S.
Our Minnesota-North Dakota chapter provides local nocost classes, support groups for people with dementia and their caregivers, resources, and a 24/7 Helpline at 800.272.3900. We also offer a range of no-cost presentations for businesses and community groups to increase awareness and support employees impacted by dementia.
Q: How did it start for the Alzheimer's Association?
A : The Alzheimer’s Association was founded in 1980 by a group of family caregivers and individuals interested in advancing research, with Jerome Stone as our founding president. When his wife, Evelyn, was diagnosed in 1970, information about Alzheimer’s — even among the medical community — was limited. He took a disease cloaked in silence and helped to create a global conversation.
Today, we continue to fight stigma by raising awareness and providing support.
Q: The Alzheimer's Association has been a member of the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce since 2004. What do you find valuable in your membership to the organization?
A: The Chamber provides great opportunities for networking, fostering relationships, collaboration and gaining visibility within the community. We are always working to raise awareness of our education classes and partnership opportunities with a broad range of organizations. While we are a national nonprofit, there are local staff eager to connect. For questions, contact Anne Winfrey, Walk to End Alzheimer’s Sr. Fundraising Manager, at akwinfrey@alz.org.
Q: What is a unique fact people should know about the Alzheimer's Association?
A: This is a cause that will touch most of our lives in some way, and it is easy for anyone to get involved and make a difference. Volunteers lead our community support groups, hold education classes, raise funds for our programs and research, meet with legislators and support our events. One way for individuals or businesses to join the fight is by walking or sponsoring our upcoming Walk to End Alzheimer’s Rochester, happening on September 14, 2024. Details are at alz.org/walk.
Q: What is the outlook for your organization and industry?
A: This is an exciting time with the recent FDA approval of new treatments that slow the early stages of Alzheimer’s, giving people more time with their loved ones. Research is continuing, so we have hope that more treatments in the pipeline will help people at all stages, and that we will eventually find a cure. If you notice memory issues that impact daily living in yourself or someone else, talk to your doctor right away. Early diagnosis makes a big difference.

Two local businesses earned the title “Outstanding Industry Partner of the Year” in mid-April at an award ceremony honoring businesses in southeast Minnesota who support youth with career-connected learning activities.
After gathering nominations from schools across the area, Southeast Service Cooperative’s Career-Readiness Manager, Sarah Ness, announced that Olmsted Medical Center and Crenlo Engineered Cabs were the award recipients of 2024. The Outstanding Industry Partner celebration recognizes each nominee for their strong partnerships built with SE Minnesota schools, and for giving students experience and skills needed to be successful in real-world employment.
Attendees of the event included local businesses and school leaders. As part of the event, roundtable discussions were had to share best practices and implementation strategies for continued growth in partnership.
Jeremy Thompson, Local 6 Plumbers and Pipefitters said, “We all have the same goal and that’s to find employees. If we can work together to find different ways to do that, we’ll all be successful.”
Another exciting announcement from this event includes a new option for businesses to connect with students. Southeast Service Cooperative launched an Internship, Mentorship, and Job Shadow "Job Board" on their online FutureForward™ platform. FutureForward™ connects Minnesota students and classrooms with local employers, aiming to positively impact future workforce and post-secondary decisions. Notably, Southeast Service Cooperative received the prestigious 2023 "Tech for Good" Tekne Award for their outstanding work connecting students to employers with FutureForward™.
Employers have the opportunity to provide skill-based opportunities that support professional development and talent retention, attract and cultivate a talent pipeline, and harness the innovative and diverse ideas of young people through FutureForward™. Joining the employer directory is completely free, and businesses can tailor their involvement based on their expertise, interests, and internal capacity.

North Broadway Reconstruction Phase 2 for the roadway between the Silver Lake Bridge and Elton Hills Drive NW is currently in progress.
The Rochester Public Works Department has numerous construction projects slated for 2024. This work has many benefits, including keeping the city’s infrastructure in good working condition, replacing infrastructure that has reached the end of its lifespan and improving safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.
The list below highlights large-scale projects; it does not include all construction work that will be conducted by the Public Works Department in 2024. Information about major City projects can be found on the City of Rochester Public Project Dashboard at https://bit.ly/3W84HLR
Residents can keep apprised of travel impacts with the online Construction Impact Map at https://bit.ly/3xEW8hn
Additional projects include annual mill & overlay and chip seal projects (Spring/Summer 2024), sidewalk improvement district (SID) Program (Spring/Summer 2024), 6 Street NW storm relief (May to September 2024), sanitary sewer improvements West Zumbro (May to December 2024).
• North Broadway Reconstruction - Phase 2 (Spring 2024 to November 2025) Phase 2 of the North Broadway reconstruction project will address the roadway between the Silver Lake Bridge and Elton Hills Drive NW. The new roadway will improve walking, biking, and transit facilities, as well as include safety improvements for drivers. Benefits of the project include turning this section of the corridor into an urban street and creating connections to pedestrian/bike trails along the Zumbro River, Cascade Creek and Silver Lake.
• 7th Avenue NW Reconstruction from 7th Street NW to 10th Street NW (May to November 2024) This reconstruction project is driven by the aging underground sanitary sewer and water main that was identified as deficient and in need of replacement. In addition to new pavement, the project will replace aging public utilities (water main, sanitary sewer and storm sewer) and bring pedestrian curb ramps into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. The existing roadway is also wider than current standards and will be narrowed to help calm traffic.
• Willow Ct SW Reconstruction (May to November 2024) The current pavement condition of Willow Court SW from 40th Street SW to the cul-de-sac is beyond repair by conventional street maintenance. In addition to new pavement, the reconstruction project will include the construction of new curb and gutter and storm sewer infrastructure to address areas of localized ponding in rain events.
• 4th Ave SW reconstruction from 14th St to 16th St SW (May to November 2024) This reconstruction project is driven by the aging underground sanitary sewer and water main that was identified as deficient and in need of replacement. In addition to new pavement, the project will replace aging public utilities (water main, sanitary sewer and storm sewer) and bring pedestrian curb ramps into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. New curb and gutter, as well as catch basins will be constructed to address stormwater issues.
Mayo Clinic in Rochester was named the No. 1 hospital in Newsweek's list of the "World's Best Hospitals" for the sixth straight year. Mayo Clinic in Florida and Mayo Clinic in Arizona were also highly ranked.
“Mayo Clinic’s No. 1 ranking is the result of our dedicated staff, who deliver unparalleled, compassionate care to our patients," says Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., Mayo Clinic president and CEO. "Patients expect and deserve categoryof-one experiences from their healthcare teams, and we remain committed to setting the standard for excellence while also leading healthcare transformation for our patients and patients everywhere.”
The annual Newsweek rankings are based on patient survey results, an international survey of more than 80,000 healthcare professionals, key performance metrics – such as patient safety and quality of care – and patient-reported outcomes.
